Housing trust skips Tasman

A trust that provides affordable housing for low income families says it is “easier” to build them in Nelson because of the help it gets from council, meaning Tasman looks likely to lose out. Nelson City Council gifted the land and waived the development contributions for the latest project, which saw eight homes built on St Lawrence St near Victory. While a $1 million grant from the Social Housing Fund accounted for nearly half of the costs, director Keith Preston believed the support from NCC makes it easier to build in Nelson, rather than Tasman, where the Tasman District Council do not waive development contributions. “It’s a real shame because there are some real housing need issues in places like Motueka and Golden Bay,” he says. “It’s so much easier to work in Nelson unfortunately.” While Keith labelled the development contributions as a “substantial amount,” Tasman Dis-

trict Council communications manager Chris Choat believes they only make up about four per cent of the cost of a house and says it was a council policy to treat all development proposals alike. He also says council would need to have the agreement of its ratepayers to support the project, as they were essentially requesting them to share the cost of providing the affordable housing. “If the council were to waive DCs, someone else, either the general ratepayer or other developers, would end up meeting any shortfall,” Chris says. “If the council was to introduce an exemption for ‘charitable’ organisations, it would have to go through a public process to secure agreement to in effect provide a subsidy to any SEE PAGE 2

Stunning start to ski season The sun is shining and there is plenty of snow, which means conditions are perfect at Rainbow Ski Area. Following the school holidays, field manager Jono Hay praised July’s weather, saying the ski field has been open for a lot longer than this time last year with just three closed days. “It’s unusual for this time of the year. We’ve had plenty of clear days which is good. It’s cooler over night which

means the snow is holding up,” he says. “We’ve got beautiful spring snow conditions.” Numbers were tracking close to last year with “good numbers” throughout the school holidays. “We’re fully booked for schools over the next week too and the feedback from customers has been really good, they’re saying our snow is better than down south where it can be quite hard and icy.”

Most of the main trails were able to open throughout the holidays, which Jono credited a new snow making pump which was installed over summer. Rainbow Ski Area is generally open until October, although that is weather and snow dependant. But right now things were definitely looking positive. “August is supposed to bring more snow so we’re crossing our fingers and waiting.”

But Keith still believed TDC were interested in what the trust was doing and says meetings with chief executive Lindsay McKenzie were positive. “He seems keen. I think it’s at the political level that we need to make the breakthrough.” He says if TDC came to the party and supplied $100,000 in the form of land, the trust could do a $1 million scheme. “For $100,000 we could build four houses and it’s as simple as that.” Nine of the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust’s current 36 houses are situation in Tasman while Tasman District Council provides in excess of 100 social housing units of its own. These are at no cost to the general ratepayer.

Fancy your recipe in our cook book? Richmond Mall is cooking up a new idea to give every household a brand new cook book and they want your favourite family recipe to be one of the star attractions. The mall celebrates its 40th birthday this October and its manager Belinda de Clercq says the cook book is just one of the ideas the mall has to help celebrate the milestone. “This will be a great cook book and it’s great that it’s going to every home in the region and for free.” The cook book will be a collection of the best recipes in the region with locals asked to submit their favourite family recipe and have the chance to have it printed in the book and win vouchers to Richmond Mall.

To submit a recipe, simply pick up an entry form from the customer service desk on your next visit to Richmond Mall. When completed, drop it into one of the Richmond Mall entry boxes. The overall favourite recipe will win a $500 mall voucher with a $250 mall voucher for the favourite recipe in each category. Belinda says she can’t wait to see what recipes come in. “I’m really looking forward to see what people drop in. It’s exciting to start a project like this and I’m sure the people of Nelson and Tasman will get in behind it.” For more information visit www. richmondmall.co.nz or visit the mall’s Facebook page.

Logging safety up for review

Brenda Grant Richmond

Sinead Ogilvie Reporter

In the face of six fatalities nationwide, local logging insiders are welcoming wide-sweeping reviews into every logging contracting operation in the country. The reviews have been announced by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment just weeks after the death of another forestry worker on the job. Although there has not been a fatality in the Nelson and Tasman regions this year, industry representatives here say they will do everything they can to keep it that way. After three serious harm notifications in the region since the beginning of this year, Moutere Logging director Dale Ewers says “bring it on” to any review that can help improve the health and safety of working in forestry. “We, as an industry, think that we are doing the right things and we think that we are heading in the right direction but the stats don’t prove that, so we welcome any help.” He says staff culture, mecha-

We are very passionate about this, it definitely hits home.” He says the industry is shifting more and more towards being fully mechanised, replacing men with machinery. Andrew Karalus, estate value manager for Nelson Forests Limited, says he is deeply con-

We understand the impact such tragic loss has on families, loved ones and the communities in which we all live. It’s unacceptable in any business and it adds to our motivation to relentlessly look for improvements to ensure everyone comes home from work to their families every day.” He says he would welcome reviews into safety standards and is confident that the health and safety management systems developed and used by Nelson Forests Ltd and its contractors will benefit from the scrutiny.

NEWS in brief SCORE PREDICTION WINNER: Waimea Weekly asked a group of locals who they were picking for Saturday’s game between Waimea Old Boys and Wanderers, with the person closest to the score winning a free meal for four at Chai Yo restaurant. Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq’s “total guess” of 24-10 was the nearest to 51-22. Well done Belinda. ANOTHER NOMINATION IN: Stuart Bryant, the current councillor for the LakesMurchison ward, is the first council candidate to be officially nominated ahead of this year’s local election. Last week mayor Richard Kempthorne was officially nominated in the mayoral race. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Volunteers are invited to join a planting day to support habitat restoration beside the Nelson Boulder Bank on Saturday, August 10 at the Cawthron Aquaculture Park, Glenduan. The Cawthron Institute Trust Board has purchased 700 native plants as well as pest traps to support ecological restoration work being undertaken by staff. Council won’t ban sugary drinks Phillip Rollo Reporter

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz A recommendation to ban sugary drinks from Tasman District Council venues and events has been rejected, with mayor Richard Kempthorne questioning whether it was the council’s responsibility or something that should be managed personally. Dr Robert Beaglehole, principal dental officer for the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, spoke at the council chambers on Thursday morning, just a week after doing a presentation at Nelson City Council, and told them a rise in obesity and teeth extractions could be prevented if sugary refreshments are no longer available at any event held on council property. “Last year we put to sleep almost 300 adults and children and took out a lot of their teeth and that’s costing the DHB between $1million and $1.5million a year,” says Robert, who is also a dental surgeon. “The majority of the teeth were taken out because they were rotten which was because of too many fizzy drinks and it’s totally preventable. Those 600ml bottles of Coke have 16 teaspoons of sugar in them and the 1.5L bottle has 40.” Richard says the presentation was both compelling and clear on the effect sugary drinks had on teeth, but he questioned the role the council should have in personal responsibility.

Dr Robert Beaglehole, who is the principal dental officer for the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, is urging councils to ban sugar drinks from their venues and events. Photo: Phillip Rollo. “I think that’s where we would run into a bit of trouble as a council, trying to take over for those personal responsibilities and that’s primarily where this lies,” he says. But Robert, who is hoping that both councils can be the first in New Zealand to adopt a policy restricting the sale of sugar drinks, says they are responsible for the health and wellbeing of their in-

dividual communities. “The writing is on the wall, it’s going to happen at some stage. It’s a step one approach and this is a great place for local government to start. Obesity and type two diabetes are dramatically increasing, especially in children.” Robert hopes the issue will come back on the agenda at both councils following this year’s elections.

Nelson lands Cricket World Cup Cricket’s biggest tournament is coming to Nelson. It was confirmed yesterday by New Zealand Cricket that Saxton Oval will be one of seven venues used in New Zealand for the ICC Cricket World Cup. Nelson will host three games, one featuring heavy weights the West Indies against Ireland and the others featuring Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and two other nations. The ICC Cricket World Cup is reported to be one of the world’s largest sporting events with 2.2 billion viewers watching the last world cup on television. In 2015 the tournament will be played in New Zealand and Australia. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says it is huge news for Nelson and will bring back the hype and excitement the city saw during its hosting of the Rugby World Cup in 2011. “This will be second only to the rugby world cup as far as events that Nelson has hosted. It will be fantastic for our city to be a part of. The Cricket World Cup is huge in England, Australia and South Africa, not to mention India and Sri Lanka and the other Asian countries. It’s their national sport so the cup will attract a huge spectator audience on TV as well as a lot of travelling tourists.”

Every school kid would remember back to 2015 when they watched games at Saxton Oval.”

Sport Fishing for Youth hooks award The Sport Fishing for Youth Charitable Trust has won the Supreme Award at the 2013 TrustPower Nelson Tasman Community Awards. The awards were announced and presented last night at a function at Petite Fleur. For winning the Supreme Award, the Sport Fishing for Youth Charitable Trust received a framed certificate, a trophy and $1500 prize money. It now has the opportunity to represent the district at the 2013 TrustPower National Community Awards, which are being held in Invercargill in March 2014. In total, TrustPower has given away over $6000 to various community groups through the awards. Tasman District Council mayor Richard Kempthorne says the Sport Fishing for Youth Charitable Trust is very popular in the eyes of many children in the region. “These volunteers are giving young children a brilliant fishing experience, something they may not have experienced before and introducing them to the freshwater environment in the Tasman district. The series of events they organise are very positive and at the same time are educating these young minds on the importance

of protecting our environment. I sincerely congratulate them on receiving this award,” he says. Volunteers teach the youth the correct technique on how to catch a rainbow trout or salmon and once they land a fish they are weighed, cleaned and placed in a bag with a recipe on how to cook the delicacy. Each youth also received a certificate to celebrate their catch. Winner of the Nelson award was Kenbe La Foundation Charitable Trust, which organises Purple Cake Day, a fundraiser for children’s education around the world. Tasman’s winner was Keep Richmond Beautiful. One hundred and thirteen groups were entered into this year’s TrustPower Nelson Tasman Community Awards. Other section winners were Dramatix Theatre Development Trust in the heritage and environment section; Golden Bay Community Health and Mens Shed Waimea were the

Stadium in race to reopen Saxton Stadium is likely to be reopened before the start of the South Island Masters Games, although Nelson City Council admit things will be “tight”. Media were given a tour through the flood damaged recreation centre on Friday, the first time since April’s flood. There, council’s community facilities supervisor Arthur Nelson said the expected open date is September 30, just one week before the South Island Masters Games on October 5. “We had regular liaisons with the contractors to make sure it’s on track and all I can say to you is that it’s on track,” he says. “We haven’t been told that it’d be a problem but if it is then Sport Tasman have been working with local groups and colleges to make sure we can hold the Masters Games anyway.” Basketball, volleyball and table tennis are scheduled to be played at the stadium during the tournament. All of the repairs in the stadium will be “like for like” and the entire cost is covered by insurance. The hardwood floor, which is arriving from Denmark, is the biggest project still to be undertaken and is likely to be laid from August 20. The floor, which was worth an approximate $500,000, and the walls, had the most significant damage. When asked what steps will be done to make sure flood waters do not enter into the stadium again, the council’s executive manager for network services Alec Louverdis reinforced the rarity of the weather event. “We need to appreciate that this was a one in 500 year event and there’s nothing we could possibly construct to cater for that,” says Alec. “A lot of the stuff that came through was from the river and we are looking at how we can manage the capacity of the river but you’re not going to see a massive bung put in there.” Both NCC and Tasman District Council have allocated funds to improve the river systems in the nearby area, to quicken the flow out of

Dancers take to the floor

The newly-formed Top of the South Amateur Dancesport League will be holding its first ever event this weekend. Held at Club Waimea on August 3, the group is hosting a ballroom dance event, giving the top ballroom dancers a chance to compete in a fun environment, while also including a bunch of other dancing

disciplines that will allow mum and dad to get up and dance. Viv Hitchcock, who hopes to attract a variety of dancers, says the group formed to keep dancing at the forefront of people’s mind. “It sort of dropped off a wee bit after the big Easter event got canned and that had been running for 46 years,” she says. “So we want to

capture all forms and see if we can integrate them in someway.” With a decline in ballroom dancing numbers, Viv says it’s important to bring better competition into the region, which means local dancers don’t have to travel to get experience. The ballroom dancing event will be on this Saturday from 6pm. Entry is $5.

Nelson’s Young Fruit Grower of the Year was in Wellington this week competing for the national Young Grower of the Year title. Jonathan Sutton was representing Richmond against three other competitors who have each won regional events, after he won the local one earlier this month. In Wellington there will be a series of four practical and four theoretical challenges to test competitor’s skills and knowledge both in the office and in the field. They will also participate in a leadership discussion panel and deliver a speech as their final challenge that evening. The Young Grower of the Year 2013 and the Young Fruit Grower of the Year for 2013 were to be announced at the Horticulture New Zealand Conference dinner on Tuesday night.

Fishing fleet blessed and ready for hoki season There was a stellar turnout for the Blessing of the Fleet commemorations held on Sunderland Marine Pier on Saturday. Mike Smith, spokesperson for the annual event, says he was more than impressed with the turnout for what was a special occasion in more ways than one, as Saturday’s ceremony was the 13th time the event has been held. While the commemorative event signals the start of the main fishing season for hoki and scallops, it is mostly held to remember those who have

lost their lives at sea, says Mike. The two-parted ceremony included a blessing from Reverend Jeff Cotton, Father David Gruschow and Archdeacon Andy Joseph alongside performances from the Nelson Youth Brass Band, the Nelson Christian Academy and the T S Talisman Cadets, who provided a guard of honour for the proceedings. Mike describes the event as incredibly moving. “Being out on the pier you are full of emotions. It is very, very moving,” he says.

Hey, Matt Werner’s there this Saturday

Nikkita, 9, and Tye Wells, 8, got a ride to school in a DeLorean DMC-12 after winning a competition at the Richmond Mall. Photos: Phillip Rollo.

Back to the school They didn’t go back to the future, just back to school. Brother and sister Tye and Nikkita Wells, the winners of a Richmond Mall competition, drove back to Henley School in style on Monday morning, getting a ride in the 1981 DeLorean DMC-12. Mostly recognised as the time machine from the Back to the Future trilogy, this particular DeLorean is generally housed at the World of Wearable Arts and Classic Cars Museum Each year since 2008, the museum and the Richmond Mall have teamed up for the promotion

which gives the winner a ride to school in one of the classic cars. Tye and Nikkita’s mother admits she wasn’t a huge Back to the Future fan when the films were first released but did recognise the now infamous car. Nikkita says the gulf-wing doors were her favourite aspect of the car. The kids were entered by their grandmother and were notified on Friday of last week. Because the pair lived within walking distance of Henley School, they were taken for a tiki tour around Richmond before being dropped off. Grandma was also given a ride.

Just a thought...

We baptised a beautiful baby in church the other day. The family was there to give thanks for this wonderful new life and to lay a solid foundation for the path of her life. I was awestruck by that little person – so much life in a tiny bundle. There are many wonderful experiences, much learning and much joy ahead of her. Of course there will be some pain too but she is blessed to be born into a good family. Her family promised to look to God, to whanau and friends for support. They will treasure the little one as she grows. They will encourage her to grow and to develop in every way including providing opportunities for her to know Jesus. They want to help her fulfil her God-given potential in every way. Susan Gill, Not every baby is so Holy Trinity Church. blessed. In 2012 more than 21,000 New Zealand children were victims of child abuse. We want the government or social agencies to fix this, don’t we? And there is much they can do. There is also something we can do. Jesus reminds us that God was serious when saying we must take care of our neighbour. Our neighbour is anyone who is vulnerable. That includes little kids, older people, teenagers… everyone. Christians believe every human being is created in God’s likeness. That motivates us to help each other become the people God intended us to be; to fulfil our potential. How can we help? Sometimes all it takes is a few words of encouragement. Maybe your neighbour could do with some help to become more than they are now. Maybe you could. A church near you will be able to assist. May God bless you with wisdom and love for those around you. Faith, hope and love abide but the greatest of these is love.

In front of one of the largest crowds were just unstoppable, running in eight to ever attend a club final at Trafalgar tries in the rout, sparked by influential Park, Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys backs Marty Banks and James Lowe. Having trailed 36-10 at half time, there was no comeback in sight for Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers, who managed to score a few consultation points late in the game. James says the win was huge we believe in it, we’re part of it, for the club. “It has been a long we invest in it. time coming. Boys had plenty of x-factor right across the park and it was the big name players that certainly stood up to the younger Wanderers team. President Duane Whiting says his boys really deserved the win and he was thrilled with the huge crowd. “The coaches have stuck with a similar sort of a team [throughout the season] and the good thing is there are quite a lot of locals here," he says. "And the crowd was great, I think we have to thank the Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly there. The great promotion in the papers really did the trick." He says the atmosphere at the club, including a strong team bond, was a key part of the victory. “They have shown the best morale and spirit that I’ve seen in the whole time I’ve been involved with Waimea Old Boys.” Wanderers captain Jesse Pitman says Waimea Old Boys were ten out of ten on the day and admits the opposition’s attitude played a huge part in the final result. “They just ran hard and we couldn’t stop them. They were too good.” Despite losing its second final in the same season, Jesse says there are still plenty of positives to take out of the season. “It’s a hard learning curve but a lot of us it’s still only our second year of senior rugby so we’ll comeback stronger. You need the experience for finals because it’s a different ball game.”

Troy Dando with a nice D’Urville Island winter trevally. a waterproof plastic bag. You should also carry flares in a waterproof canister to make it easier for people to find you. When going boating, it’s always a good idea to make sure your crew knows where all the safety equipment is and what they should do in case of an emergency. Check the weather forecast and if in doubt don’t go out. Also a really good idea is to develop a pre-launch checklist for your boat. It’s easy to forget or miss things when you go boating. You get caught up in the excitement of a day out on the water. There are lots of things you need to remember – such as ensuring you have enough food for the day, selecting the right sort of bait and making sure you know the route to get to where you're going. Why not develop a checklist of the critical things that you need to do before the boat goes in the water? Do you have enough fuel? Is there a lifejacket on board for every person on the boat? Do you have at least two forms of communications on board, such as a VHF radio, a fully-charged mobile phone or flares? Have you inserted the bungs? Get your checklist printed and laminated, then stick it to your dashboard where you can't avoid seeing it. Before you launch, satisfy yourself that you've completed all the checks. This will result in a safe and pleasant day's boating with no hidden surprises.

Over the last few weeks or so the weather has been a bit sporadic with few fishing reports coming in, so I thought it might be a good chance to remind everyone of some basic safety precautions and develop your own critical checklist before heading out boating. Whenever you are going out on the water, make sure people are aware where you are going and more importantly, when you intend to be back. That way, friends and family won’t get unnecessarily worried and contact authorities causing in some cases, expensive and time consuming searches to be mounted. It pays to prepare a Two Minute form that has the details of your vessel, where you are going boating and when you are returning. Give it to someone who can contact the authorities if you don’t return by your scheduled time then someone can contact the Coastguard. Make sure you wear the appropriate clothing when going boating. Always wear a lifejacket when you go boating and always wear clothing that is appropriate for the conditions. A rule of thumb is that you should go for several layers of thinner clothing rather than one thick layer (thinner, multi layers trap air and retains heat better). You can always remove a layer if you get too warm. When going boating you must carry some form of communication device in case you get into difficulty. It is important when going boating that you carry at least two forms of communication. You never know when you might need to contact someone in a hurry. By far the best form of communication is a marine VHF radio. When you use a VHF radio it can be picked up by a range of different people at once, whereas a cellphone will only be picked up by one person. If you have a cellphone, then make sure that it is in

Still in the hunt

Members of the Waimea College first XV wore the colours of their junior clubs to training last week. Photo: Phillip Rollo. Morale is high in the Waimea College first XV camp, and deservedly so. Having fallen short of its goal to reach the top eight in the Press Cup, Waimea College quickly shifted focus to retaining the bowl trophy it won last year. Now on an unbeaten run in the second section, things seem to be back on track at Waimea, who are firmly knocking down the door of section two leaders, Timaru Boys’ High School. At training last week the team held a special club of origin day. All of the players

wore the colours of their junior club, and with the majority coming from Waimea Old Boys and Wanderers – the two teams that squared off in Saturday’s club final – there was plenty of friendly banter being shared. Co-coach Daniel Hobbs says it was just a coincidence that the special training fell just two days before the club final but believed it was a good morale booster for the team. “It was just about acknowledging where these guys came from and hopefully where they are going to,” he says. “They

come from pretty proud clubs from the region.” With multiple close loses and only two wins, Daniel admits the side were left to rue little mistakes that potentially cost them a spot in the top eight. But with that all behind them, Waimea now has a realistic chance of winning each of the remaining fixtures and it’s something that has the team buzzing again. “There’s definitely that side of it. Our goal was to make the top eight but when that became

apparent that it wasn’t going to happen we quickly refocused. We were disappointed to miss out, definitely, but we’re currently three from three in the bottom eight and our goal is to win everything from here.” If Waimea wins this weekend against St Andrews College in Christchurch it should land a home semi-final. “Currently Timaru Boys’ High School is first. We lost 9-3 to them down there and we’d love another crack at them, we don’t care where.”

Our tippers back Chiefs Earthquakes left The Super 15 final is on this Saturday and most of your local tippers are picking the Chiefs to beat the Brumbies. The tipping competition involving local business personalities has been a huge success and with just one game left to play the winner is assured her title. Councillor Judene Edgar has picked 83 correct results out of 124 and with only one game left, the two tippers on 80 points, Jason Stack and Kevin Cross, cannot catch her.

They can, however, still beat each other and Kevin is just one of two tippers that have gone against the hot favourites the Chiefs. Former Richmond Mall manager David Hill, who is in seventh place and is also picking a Brumbies win, can be caught by Kevin Krammer who went with the Chiefs. The competition has been so successful that Waimea Weekly will be expanding it to run during the ITM Cup, with some new faces added.

Boxer Joseph Parker could be fighting in Nelson New Zealand’s latest boxing star looks set to fight in Nelson with his promoter in Nelson on Friday to discuss a possible bout. Joseph Parker is a rising star in the world of heavyweight boxing and his manage-

ment team, Duco Promotions, are keen to have him fight at the Trafalgar Centre in a bout dubbed the Battle of Trafalgar. Dean Lonergan, of Duco, was in Nelson on Friday to attend the official opening of the Victory Boxing Club’s new gym on

Vanguard St and while he was here, held talks with Nelson City Council and those behind the successful Fight 4 Victory fundraiser. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says talks went well and he’s hopeful that Joseph will fight

in Nelson next year in late March or early April. “Nothing is confirmed but he is extremely keen on bringing Joseph Parker here and we want him to come, so now we just need to go through the business plan and the dollars.”

significant part in the victory, sending in the cross for the young forward. The tournament was held on Wednesday and Thursday at Saxton Field, Waimea College and the Avery. More than 20 teams took part in 12th grade, 13th grade, 14th grade and 15th grade matches. The majority of the competition comprised of sides from within the Mainland Football Federation, although there were three from Auckland and three from Wellington. Organiser Nigel Push hopes the tournament will become the premiere club competition in New Zealand for the four age groups and says it was a great opportunity for the Nelson players to get experience against out of town opposition. “It lets a lot more kids get involved and it also lets them know where they are at, at a national level as well,” he says. Richmond 15th grade coach Paul Cousins says his side was pleased with the result. “We got to the final last year and lost, so it was awesome.”

The education program is awesome - keep up the good work! Thanks and take care! - May 2013

Anyone who has worked through a funding crisis knows how crippling it can be. Trying to plan for a future that may not exist can sometimes be a leap of faith too far. On the other hand, sometimes out of adversity and uncertainty, great plans can be born. Government funding for Nayland College’s Adult Community Education (ACE) programme ended in 2009 and the Board committed to support the continuation of a selffunded programme in the short term. The programme has continued to exist because students continue to enrol but the stark reality is that if the programme is not financially sustainable through student course fees, other funding support is necessary. If it becomes a cost to the school it will, like many other school ACE programmes, disappear. Working together in collaboration with other community education initiatives in Nelson to create efficiencies and strengthen the sector is something which was explored by research funded by

ACE Aotearoa. This showed that 81% of the community education providers in the Nelson Tasman region had an interest in collaboration - the most preferred being to develop a shared website - which would also provide a mechanism for sifting out duplication and calendar clashes and opportunity for resource-sharing. Another level of collaboration could come through shared administration resources for enrolment management. Resourcing is required to implement these ideas into action and funding and community support is needed to get there. In the meantime, Nayland invites you to sample a course from this terms programme and leave you with a student comment from the Term 4 2012 MYOB course “From this course I have learned better procedures, loads of information to put into practice, how to set up different departments, more confidence within the MYOB system and most importantly how it can improve my business to its full potential!” View the FULL list of courses at http://comed.nayland.school.nz or Ph: 547 9769 to enrol. Rangers beaten in division three final Rangers saved its best for last but couldn’t quite match an imposing Marist side, losing the Car Company Nelson Bays division three final 36-19 at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. With a 50 per cent record going into the playoffs, Rangers managed to sneak past second qualifier Tapawera to book its place in the final. While Marist, on the other hand, had only lost once all season and thrashed Stoke 92-0 in its semi-final, making it a firm favourite to win the title. But despite the differences, Rangers were happy with its showing, pushing Marist hard throughout the

game, and remaining in the hunt at half time, despite trailing 24-7. The father and son duo of Steve and Shaun Berkett got their names on the scoresheet after busy performances, while winger Alex Jordan capped off a strong showing by scoring before halftime. Although Rangers last won the title in 2005, finishing second was an improvement on last year’s placing, according to player-coach Mark Forward. “We just missed out on the top four last year,” he says. “Marist had dominated throughout this season. We thought we may have possibly upset them but they were too strong on the day.”

Super Liquor Waimea Old Boys kept up the pace and avoided a potential banana skin, beating Marist 41-5 on Saturday. It was a match Waimea Old Boys had to win if it wanted to entertain any hope of jumping competition leaders Murchison before the playoffs, and a bonus point win was sealed in a strong second half display which saw Waimea pile on 31 points. “These guys had nothing to lose and everything to win by toppling us while we had everything to lose,” says team manager Brent Stewart. “They brought the game to us for sure, but they just didn’t play to the wind in that first half at all. So once we weathered that we knew we had the wind in the second half.” Right wing Connor McBrydie was the first person to get his name on the score sheet, finishing off a slick backline move on the 15th minute. But with the gusty wind blowing straight down the ground, John Higgins’ conversion attempt skewed wide. Fullback Mitchell Bateman scored the next try, on the 28th minute mark, beating three defenders down the left hand wing. Despite dotting down right under the posts, the conversion was not successful with a Marist player charging the ball down when John moved. Marist, who had struggled for results all season, managed to score right on half-time, putting plenty of pressure on a Waimea side desper-

ate for victory. But with the wind at their backs, Waimea were able to kick for territory with ease and flourished in the second half with John, Luke Thelin and Mitchell all finding success. And the pressure eased a little when openside flanker Hamish Ballagh scored early in the second half, although he was forced off with a rib injury shortly after. Paul Burt, who had been playing centre, moved into flanker for just the second time this season, and scored the next try from a scrum in front of the sticks, sealing the bonus point. From there the flood gates opened with Sy Keelan, Callum Hart and Connor scoring tries. Brent says the team was happy with the outcome, as it now equals Murchison at the top of the Car Company Nelson Bays division two standings. “This competition is great but from my calculations there are still six teams that can make it. But home advantage is very important so we’re going for the top spot.” One of those teams that are still in the running for a semi final spot is this weekend’s opposition, Nelson. Waimea will face the side at Neale Park on Saturday, knowing it is another must win. “By no stretch of the imagination are these guys easy beats. Because they know we are at the top they’re going to be going for blood.” Brent says the team was also buzzing following the division one win.

Tapawera gains promotion Carol Cook

Netball Reporter editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz

While overhead conditions were favourable at Saxton Courts on Saturday the chill and wind factor were far from pleasant as the day progressed. In Grade 4 it was a top of the table clash between Tapawera Nelson Honey and Prices Pharmacy White, with the winner gaining promotion to Grade 3 for the Championship Round. There was absolutely nothing in it throughout the forty minutes, with neither team gaining an ascendency. Prices White looked a little “messy” through court to begin, however once they settled they play some nice straight lines. Brit Kelling put in some beautiful feeds from wing attack, while twins Dakota and Cheyenne Sigley had strong performances. Ariana Te Kawa Wiremu was strong in the air to take some great ball at wing defence before moving to goal shoot in the second half. Goal keep Di Pegg put in a solid performance when she got a number of deflections and was quick to gather the loose ball. Tapawera took the game 23-21 and will now play in Grade 3 for the Championship Round. Promotion/relegation game:

The promotion game between Prices Pharmacy A and Nelson College for Girls was played on Sunday. The game had been deferred on account of representative commitments. The opening quarter was a low scoring affair with the ball being turned over numerous times. Prices had their noses in the front 7-6 at the first break. Prices lifted the bar in the second quarter to lead 18-12, as the college girls struggled to get quality ball into their shooters. Prices

fought for their survival in the premier grade with better through court play, which was finished off by shooters Dana Wilson and Rebecca Dudley. Goal defence, Sarah Steele made a significant contribution in the 35-23 win. It was a huge ask for Prices to then back up to play Jacks OPD in the first round of the Championship Round. While beaten by the defending champions they were very much in touch until the final stages when fatigue set in to lose 45-61.

Sounds Air have purchased another Cessna Grand Caravan (registration ZK-SAY) for their fleet bringing the total Caravans operating across Cook Strait to four. The aircraft was previously operating with Salt Air in Kerikeri and Sounds Air purchased it in May this year and it spent the last two months being repainted in Sounds Air fleet colours and had the latest ‘glass’ cockpit technology installed to match the rest of the Sounds Air fleet. The first commercial flight was on Monday 22nd July 2013 when 12 passengers boarded at Blenheim for a flight to Wellington. Each passenger was given a bottle of champagne to celebrate the occasion and then took their seats in the new seating configuration that gives every passenger more legroom.
