Richmond’s bad air day

Simon Bloomberg

Richmond’s air quality is under the microscope again after it was revealed last week that dangerously high concentrations of arsenic were recorded at a monitoring station at Oxford St between 2013 and 2015. The Tasman District Council reported that the annual average arsenic concentration

for 2014 in Richmond was 19 nanograms per cubic metre of air, almost four times the national guideline of 5.5. Analysis showed there had been a seasonal increase in arsenic concentrations from the burning of treated wood in domestic fires with occasional higher concentrations linked with an industrial source in the area readings peaked at 190.

Council resource scientist contaminants Paul Sheldon says it is extremely disappointing to find evidence of arsenic at such levels. Paul says arsenic, which is carcinogenic, was detected on a large sample of air filters which were tested retrospectively this year as part of the council’s air quality monitoring. Although Paul would not identify the in-

dustrial source, he says it resulted from “an industrial boiler burning treated wood waste”, including shavings and sawdust. Burning treated or painted timber is not permitted under the Tasman Resource Management Plan, because it releases toxic substances into the air and creates toxic

Spotlight on outside security Simon Bloomberg Some of Waimea’s more vulnerable elderly residents are feeling a little safer at night thanks to an initiative by Waimea Neighbourhood Support and Community Patrols New Zealand aimed at installing security lights at 100 homes. Waimea Neighbourhood Support coordinator Marty Price has set up 148 street groups around the district since he started in Richmond in 2012. Marty has been concerned that some of the more vulnerable residents lack outside security lighting and this month decided to do something about it. “I was setting up a street group on Templemore Dr and a lady mentioned she had some things stolen from outside,” Marty says. “She didn’t have any outside security lighting so I decided to do something about it.

Richmond’s bad air day Spotlight on FROM PAGE 1 ash. Paul says council will be working with “the private and industrial community to prevent this practise” the business responsible for the industrial source of arsenic was issued an abatement notice to prevent any future unsafe burning. Paul says the high arsenic readings were detected during extensive testing of more than 200 air filter samples collected as part of council’s air quality monitoring and “were a big surprise”. “We didn’t go out looking for this - it came up incidentally. We knew we’d find arsenic but not at those concentrations.” Paul says the other surprising result was the composition of particulates in the air that contribute to Rich-

Although smoke emissions from woodburners are the biggest source of problematic PM10 particles, Paul says there was also a significant amount of sea salt and sulphates from ships’ diesel fuel, blown in by the sea breeze - dirt and dust from roads was also a contributor. “There’s quiet a large vehicle signature from exhausts and dust and dirt from roads -

it’s more than we thought. The other thing we were surprised about was the amount of sulphates and they’re coming from ships in Port Nelson because heavy fuel has a lot of sulphur in it.” Paul says national air quality standards state these PM10 particles cannot exceed more than 50 micrograms per cubic metre of air so it’s critical “to know what comprises that 50”. The latest air quality data shows that Richmond had five days this winter when the PM10 exceeded 50 which is two more than last winter and three more than in 2014. Under present guidelines, council is required to meet strict new requirements which permits three breaches by 2016 and just one by 2020.

outside security FROM PAGE 1 “I was going to go down to Bunnings and buy one for her myself but then Mike Gill from the Richmond Community Patrol suggested I ask Community Patrol New Zealand for help. I applied for a grant and they gave us $2000 which is enough for 100 lights.” Marty and members of the community patrol have already installed two of the high quality solar-powered lights and will be installing more lights at homes of Neighbourhood Support group members who need extra security. Templemore Dr Neighbourhood Support group member Peggy Jack says “it’s a wonderful” initiative which shows that “people are thinking about our community and our safety”. Peggy’s neighbour Val Jones says the security lighting “will help us keep safe”. Waimea Neighbourhood Support group members who are concerned about their security can contact Marty about the lights on 5441365.

Simon Bloomberg Staff at the Richmond police station will be back to a full complement in two weeks although the station will still be closed intermittently until new security measures are installed at the front counter. Police numbers throughout Nelson and Tasman have been down following a run of retirements, forcing staff to close the Richmond station’s doors when they have been busy. The problem has been accentuated by a nationwide review which identified Richmond as one of the high risk stations that needed its front counter upgrading. That means the station has to be closed when no constabulary members or authorised officers are present. Although Nelson Bays police area commander Mat ArnoldKelly says he still doesn’t know when the station’s security will be upgraded, it should be closed less often with more staff based at Richmond. Mat says Richmond had one new staff member start this week and would have another two by the middle of next month.

Who are you going to call? Simon Bloomberg Customer service staff at the Tasman District Council deal with thousands of calls a week so it’s not surprising that some of them are rather unusual. In fact, some of them are so unusual the ladies behind the counter at the council’s Richmond office have started keeping a book of their favourites. “Our goal is to help everyone as much as possible so we deal with all queries in a very professional manner,” customer services staff member Angela Brown says. “But some of the calls are so funny we have a little bit of a giggle afterwards - we’ve even started writing down the best ones in a book.” Perhaps the funniest call received last year was from someone concerned about a distressed dog panting in a parked car. Customer services staff quickly dispatched council’s animal control officer who found the dog was actually a stuffed animal and not the real thing. There was also a call from a person asking how to get to the airport Vote Gibbs for TDC and another complaining about ducks walking up their garden path and poohing on their veranda Commitment to and knockprocess ing on their Dennis M Gibbs ranch-slider Authorised by Dennis Gibbs, door. including building consents, can be accessed on-line, greatly reducing the number of customers. “We used to get queues of 30 or 40 people that were so long they went out the door on the last day for rates payments but that doesn’t happen anymore,” Suzanne says. But that doesn’t mean the council’s 13 full and part-time customer service staff aren’t busy anymore - they just do a range of different jobs including helping out in civil defence emergencies and managing the council’s contact us enquiries. “There’s plenty of variety in the job and that’s one of the things I like about it,” staff member Verity Simpson says. “I also enjoy helping people - you definitely have to be a people person to be able to do this job.” The latest residents’ survey released last week indicates Suzanne and her team seem Tasman District Council customer service staff Angela Brown, left, and Verity Simp- to be getting things exactly right because customer services is one of the highest ratson at work in Richmond last Friday. Classic cars on show for Father’s Day

In case you’ve been living under a rock, it’s council election time – there are cars, signs and meet-and-greets popping up all over the region. But this one caught our eye, Richard Kempthorne’s campaigning car has a certain Mona Lisa-esque quality. The decal, a car sticker of Richard’s eyes, follows you as you walk past it and the good-humoured Tasman mayor admits

to getting a bit of fright when he first saw it himself. “The first time I walked out into the garage when it was on, I gave myself a hang of a fright. I walked down and suddenly saw myself smiling back at me and it was quite... surprising,” he says. For a walk by video of the sticker visit www.nelsolive.co.nz

.CO.NZ Man charged with violent Nelson murder faces court: A man has faced court charged with the murder of a man whose body was found on a boat at Nelson more than three weeks ago. Martin Grant Price, 52, was arrested on Saturday, August 20, and appeared in Nelson District Court last Monday charged with killing John Murray Morton, whose body was discovered at Nelson Haven on August 4. Price will next appear in the High Court at Nelson on September 6, his lawyer Tony Bamford told NZ Newswire. He was unable to comment on whether Price would enter a plea on that date. According to detectives, Mr Morton’s injuries suggested he was the victim of a “very violent attack”. Nelson rises on economic scoreboard: Statistics from the NZ Regional Economic Scoreboard show Nelson soaring into the top four. The economic scoreboard takes the latest quarterly regional statistics and ranks the economic performance of New Zealand’s 16 regional council areas. Ratings are updated every three months and are measured by population, employment, construction, retail trade, house prices and new car sales. ASB chief economist Nick Tuffley says Nelson’s jump is thanks, largely, to the housing market.

Trial to reduce chlorine at Aquatic Centre The chlorine at the Richmond Aquatic Centre may have a pungent reputation but over the next two months that could change. A new water treatment system will be trialled at the Richmond Aquatic Centre and is expected to result in clearer, softer water – as well as a reduction in the smell of chlorine. Tasman District Council and Richmond Aquatic Centre staff have been investigating alternatives to the existing chlorine treatment, and have decided to conduct a trial of an Austrian-developed system called Wapotec in the lane pool. The system will more than halve the amount of chlorine currently used in the lane pool. Council Community Partnerships Coordinator Mike Tasman-Jones said the Bays Aquatic Centre in Auckland had successfully introduced the Wapotec system. “The environment at the Bays

We were originally considering an ultra-violet treatment system but Wapotec has reported better results, is cheaper to install and has comparable running costs. “The two-month trial will allow us to assess whether the

results are as good as we would hope. We expect to see a significant improvement in water quality and a big reduction in odour-causing chloramines in the lane pool.” If the lane pool trial is successful, the Council will consider rolling out Wapotec treatment to the other pools at the aquatic centre over time. The trial begins on 25 August and runs for two months.

Proposal to make Richmond a non-violent town A group of like-minded residents have organised a meeting with Tasman district’s community leaders to discuss the possibility of declaring

Richmond as the first non-violent town in the country. The group’s spokesman Rex Hunt says the meeting will be held at the council offices in

Richmond on September 14 and organisers hope it will be the first step in a process to making Richmond a non-violent town.

MINI BIRTHDAY: Chris Jones and David Wallace of the Minis in Nelson Club, with Chris’s 1964 Austin Mini. The club gathered in the WOW car park on Sunday afternoon to celebrate the 57th anniversary of the Mini. Members proudly showed off their cars while on-lookers were keen to have a look and talk to owners about their cars. The membership of the club sits at around 50, with about 25 cars. Club president Andy Wallace says she got her first Mini when she was a teenager and has always loved the fun, small car. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Moutere hosts Sarau book fair, Wednesday, August 3: Sarau’s Winter Books, Wool and Fabric Sale, held over the last weekend of July, proved popular, selling bundles of books at the Moutere Hills Community Centre. Organisers Sharon Beuke and Anna Haddon say the event raised just over $2000. All proceeds from the sale will be donated to the community centre for its development projects. Menzshed builds ‘buddy seat’ for Tahuna School, Wednesday, July 13: Since building and installing a buddy seat for Tahuna School, which aims to help lonely and isolated students make new buddies, Menzshed Waimea are now working to complete more for local schools. The lane pool currently looks like someone has poured milk in it, it's that cloudy. I hope this works! Kay Stansbury-Ward. The chlorine is blinding. Branding on gondola: It’s great to see Nelson’s gondola getting the support it deserves with Nelson City Council’s Governance Committee voting to release $50,000 for the development of a business case for the project. I take my hat off to the Nelson Cycle Lift Society for the years of voluntary work that they’ve put into the project to date. The gondola could be a game-changer for Nelson; it would be like having a ski field on our backdoor that’s open 12 months a year. In fact, I think it’s the best idea anyone has come up with since the World of Wearable Arts show left town. If the dream of the gondola does become a reality, one thing I would love to see is the word ‘NELSON’ emblazoned across its cabins. I like the idea of people sharing and tweeting photos with 'NELSON’ screaming out at the world from every shot. It would be an easy way of spreading the word and, as the photo below from Jackson Hole in the USA demonstrates, could look very cool. Matt Lawrey.

Dancers impress at Shakedown Jessie Johnston Dancers from around the country gave it their all last Saturday in a bid to take out a title in this year’s Shakedown Hip Hop Champs. The event was split into two competition sessions, solo performers, small crews and school’s taking to the Nelson College assemble hall stage in the afternoon, while the junior, varsity, open and mega crews got their chance to perform in the evening. Around 200 dancers in total competed in the champs, with over 700 people making up the audience. “Every year we run this event to try and get the South Island dancers more experienced and I think this year was definitely the strongest level of competition we’ve had,” says event organiser, Gemma Laing. “Especially in the solo section, there was a really high standard and a lot of those dancers had choreographed their solos themselves, which means they’re actually learning how to develop those skills as well as getting to perform on stage,” she says. Dancers from Identity Dance Company, including members from world champion group, the Bradas, were also there, hosting a workshop on Friday that attracted 80 dancers, judging the competing performers and doing a special performance during the champs. “They also spent a lot of time talking with the dancers, passing on advice and sharing

4 MAYOR TASMAN

Focus - Fresh Approach - Community Involvement

I’d like to say thank you to all the people who have contacted me with positive comments about my mayoral campaign over the last week. It is encouraging to know that so many are wanting change. Thank you all for your ideas – the more input I have from residents and ratepayers, the better I can represent community views. The people of Tasman deserve more than they have been getting.

Nelson dancer Jacqueline Austin gives it her all in the Shakedown Hip Hop Champs, held at the Nelson College hall on Saturday afternoon. The winners of the Junior Small Crew section were Nelson’s Iconic, Junior Solo was won by Nelson’s Maia Weir, Senior Solo went to Min Bin from Christchurch, Senior Small Crew was won by Nelson crew Tag Team and in the school’s section, Enner Glynn won the primary school divi-

sion while Motueka High won the college division. In the evening session, Nelson’s Fuzion won the Junior Crews section, Shutter from Christchurch won the Varsity section and Part ll won the Open Division, while Zion took out the title for the Mega Crew section. A development award was also given to junior crew Cru-Z from Nelson and Varsity crew Diversity from Christchurch.

I can’t promise to achieve all I have been asked but I can promise to put your views forward and fight for your rights. My experience in dealing with the rating issues for the residents of Lower Queen Street and Headingly Lane clearly demonstrated how difficult it can be to deal with our own Council. This was the catalyst for me to take greater interest in the workings of the Council and ultimately for me to stand as Mayor of Tasman. I have regularly attended Council meetings since that time. The people of Tasman deserve to be listened to.

The Superwoman in 150 ladies was celebrated at a Red Carpet Evening at Richmond New Life Church on Friday. The church’s ladies have organised an all-women’s event for the last three years and this year’s edition was a red carpet evening with the theme of ‘from the journey comes beauty’. It featured songs by Kathie Moore, music from harpist Milly Burke and readings that highlighted inspirational women. “It was a real success,” one of the organisers Cindy Hutton says. “It was a fun social night out, but we also tried to have an encouraging theme that celebrated women.” Although many of the ladies were from the New Life Church, senior pastor Vanessa Martin says the event was also for all women from Richmond and the surrounding community. Vanessa says it was an opportunity to “bless our community’s ladies and give them a chance to dress up and feel

Proud to support Appleby School Fair

There’s a lot to be thankful for during a Nelson spring - sunny days, new lambs, getting in the garden and of course, a family outing to the Appleby School Country Fair. Not only is the fair a highlight on the spring calendar, it’s also the best place to find all those cute and cuddly animals, sunshine and new additions for the garden, all in one place. As the first fair of spring, the Appleby School Fair

draws visitors from all over the Nelson-Tasman region. Its rural charm and old-fashioned fairground favourites bring a smile to visitors of all ages and this year’s fair will be no different. It is scheduled for 11am, Saturday, September 3, and will proceed rain or shine. And don’t worry about your arrival, traffic management will be on hand to ensure there’s a safe car parking spot for everyone. Appleby School fair organiser Laura Southward attributes the fair’s success to community support and sticking to the tried and true. “Visitors enjoy the country atmosphere and have come to know what to expect from our fair. So we stick to that, making only minor adjustments each year to ensure we are continually improving on what we do.” Once inside the school gates, children will be instantly drawn to the fairground attractions including the petting zoo and pony rides for the animal lovers, smashing crockery, horizontal bungy and laser tag for the energetic and the big dig for those who love a surprise. Those with style in mind should check out the wacky hair and face painting. The Farmer’s Market and plant stand will be well stocked as usual, due to the generous support of local growers. There will be fresh fruit and vegetables, some of it so fresh due to only being picked on the morning of the fair and an array of plants, shrubs, seedlings, citrus varieties and herbs that will make for a beautiful and productive garden. Jam makers and preservers amongst the Appleby community have been busy again this year creating a huge selection of delicious homemade jams, preserves and spicy chutneys, plus, there’s a great collection of local farm-fresh goods such as free-range eggs, lemons and even home grown nuts. To top it all off, you’ll find delicious cake and slice offerings from the talented parents and grandparents in the community. Make sure you come along to the fair with an appetite as the Appleby School Country Fair is well-known for its fair menu. There will

pre-loved books, furniture and clothes, or to the silent auction for new items donated by generous local businesses. The Silent Auction has become an Appleby School Country Fair draw card, proving popular with fairgoers and advertisers alike. Just as in previous years, this year there will be more than 200 items going under the silent hammer. From $20 cafe vouchers and Father’s Day gift packs to mobile phones and outdoor equipment, this is the auction that has it all. Even former All Black Chris Jack has agreed to auction his time, so if your aspiring rugby player wants some tackling advice from the man himself, this is the place to be. To discover what else is up for grabs, check out the silent auc-

tion catalogue on the school website and Facebook page. All auction items will be arranged and ready to uplift from 1.30pm on the day of the fair, so there will be no waiting around for your new purchases. The competition heats up in the afternoon with the Grandparents Bake-off, the Cafe Cake Competition and then the big one, the Kid’s Slice Competition with both junior and senior sections. Everything will be taste tested and judged by a team of eager, sweet-toothed judges. So if you have a secret desire to be named best in fair, make sure your entry is dropped off to the school library by 9am the day before. Entries should come whole so lucky fair goers get a taste of them too via the Country Kitchen.

The success and popularity of the Appleby School Fair is due to the generosity of the Appleby School community and the support of local businesses who donate their time, goods and expertise to make this a stand out event. Although large in size, the fair organisers strive to maintain the small school, close-knit community feel with friendly faces to welcome fair goers, queue management in place to limit waiting times and a well mapped layout for ease of access. Exhibition raises cash for hospice With the help of local sponsors, touring artists Mike and Richard Ponder have raised $11,050 for the Nelson Tasman Region Hospice Trust with their exhibition ‘Ponder This’. Nelson Tasman Region Hospice Trust chairman John Peters says it is a huge amount of money for the hospice. “Getting support from the community is something that we rely on, without it we can’t do what we do, so we’re really grateful to everyone who came and played a part in the

exhibition.” The exhibition was hosted at the Old Powerstore building on Trafalgar St for two weeks and proved very popular. Featuring the work of both brothers, the exhibition placed together typical rural kiwi scenes with Van Gough-styled landscapes. Arron Cox of Houston Motor Group, a major sponsor of the exhibition, says he was happy to support it. The money will go towards building a new hospice and has kick-started a From left, Nelson Tasman Region Hospice Trust CEO Frans Dellebeke and chairman John Peters fundraising drive to cover the build. accept over $11,000 from Houston Motor Group’s Arron Cox. Change. This is a word everyone has to deal with every day. And sometimes, change is inevitable. In the context of the church, change can sometimes be a hard subject. People in the church get used to living by the unchangeable text – which we call the ‘Bible or Scripture’. I interpret the text from the Bible every Sunday as part of my preaching – this is part of my job as a minister. But, I cannot change the actual words written in them. Because of this tradition, some people in the Church struggle when they have to deal with change. Just like many people in society, some people like to keep to their routines instead of embracing change. Routines are good to someone who may need more self-discipline, particularly if trying to achieve a certain goal or complete a certain task. But sometimes, if you change from the comforts of your normal

“It’s a lovely place.” Dallas and Pauline moved into their Summerset retirement village when Pauline was unwell. The village offered them the opportunity to live close to each other with living options suited to their different level of needs. With his serviced apartment just two minutes away from the care centre, Dallas could pop upstairs to be with Pauline whenever he wanted to. These days Dallas enjoys the company of the other residents and regularly catches up with people in the library. “It’s a lovely place.” Dallas has a way of describing both residents and staff, “You can’t just use the word friendly, it’s more than that. It’s like family.”

routines and make a change, you may see how it leads to different outcomes. For example, if you enjoy walking as exercise, it is more exciting and challenging when you change your normal walking routes and discover new tracks. Our Church has made a few changes recently. One of those things is the makeover and opening of the Wesley Garden. We transformed the area to a garden after the demolition of the previous church building. Our church is conveniently located at the heart of the Richmond business area. Therefore, we thought it would be a great idea to provide a place that people in the community could come during the day. Initially, the garden was not as conveniently accessible. So one of our church members gave the idea of creating an entrance way. This makes it more welcoming and significantly opens up the garden. The Wesley Garden is an area that, we hope, the community can enjoy. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the space.

Drummond keen to make home advantage count Jacob Page

NELSON COLLEGE

PREPARATORY SCHOOL

INFORMATION EVENING Entry 2018 Wednesday 7th September 7pm in Hall (Current year 5 boys)

Richmond golfer Andrew Drummond has come a long way from the seven-year-old who took his driver to the tee of a 97m par three. The Greenacres club member and former Waimea College pupil has a fifth and final chance to win the New Zealand Under-19 golf title, on home turf at the Nelson Golf Club against 155 other players, this week. “I’m certainly going there to win, having played it five times, I’ll be keen to give it my best shot. There couldn’t be a bigger advantage out there than playing a national championship on your home course.” The 18-year-old’s best finish came last year when he managed 12th. Andrew currently works three part-time jobs in an effort to make his long term goal of being a golfer, a reality. He works at Action Indoor Sports, is the media and communications advisor for Tasman Golf and is a tiler.

Tasman golfer Andrew Drummond. Photo Jacob Page.

When he is not playing golf, he likes to play the stock market. “I like to stay busy,” he says. “Some people struggle to face their day, but for me, life is about getting as much as I can out of my 24 hours. “I want this [golf] to be the full McCoy – world No 1 one day is the aim.” He says his friendship with top Tasman amateur Ryan Chisnall has helped prepare him for what he needs to do to make his golfing dreams a reality. Andrew’s family all play golf and his first memory is on the

tee of Redstone Golf Course past Wakefield. “I hit a full driver as best as I could and got my first birdie. “Golf teaches you so many life lessons, about forming good life relationships and how to carry yourself on the course.” Other Tasman golfers taking part include Sam Nichols, Mitchell Newport, Harry Kim, Kameran Clarke, Josh Simpson, Matt Grimes, Tom Zohrab, David Zohrab and Connor Winter. Nelson’s Eve Clarke and Lizzie Neale are included in the Under-19 girls field which plays at Greenacres.

Brexit - What the Bible says For over 40 years Britain has been part of the European Economic Community and then the European Union. However, the Bible indicates that Britain and the mainland European nations will be on different sides of an awful war called the ‘battle of Armageddon’. This, the Bible tells us, will take place just before Jesus Christ will return to the earth to set up God’s Kingdom.

Britain, Brexit and the Bible The Bible has remarkable things to say about Britain, Europe and other nations as God’s plan unfolds with the earth.

For over 150 years Christadelphians have believed that a political separation of Britain and Europe was inevitable. We were therefore not surprised when the people of Britain have voted to ‘Brexit’ and come out of the EU.

Nelson Christadelphians

In 1848 a Bible Student writer, John Thomas, in his book Elpis Israel commented on Britain in relation to the European toe-kingdom of Daniel 2:42,43: “When I come to unfold these things, the reader will see why Britain is not included in the ten toes. She is reserved of God to antagonise Russia… The ten toes belong to the image as a united dominion; hence Britain cannot be included among them unless it is first conquered by the overshadowing power, which it will not be, as is clearly demonstrable from many parts of the divine testimony.” (Pages 337-338, Logos edition).

Student writer, Graham Pearce, indicated that prophecy demonstrated that this was not to be Britain’s future position: “So though we do not know how it will happen, Britain will separate from Europe.” Milestones 1981, pages 18-19. In 1990, two years before the Maastricht Treaty was ratified, the current editor of the Bible Magazine stated he believed that: “Bible prophecy requires Britain’s ultimate separation from Catholic Europe. On that basis, he has no hesitation in saying that Britain’s eventual exit from Europe is a certainty. As to questions concerning how it will happen, and when, we do not know because it has not been revealed in Scripture.” Guardians of Israel & Arabia, page 24. The Bible is not an outdated book with nothing to say about events of today. It explains what will happen next in God’s plan for the world and what we can do to have a place in it. We are holding this special public address to help people understand the Bible better and to discover for themselves its prophecies. The talks are free and you are very welcome to join us to learn more about the Bible. If you require any more information please contact us at:nelsonchristadelphians@ outlook.co.nz Business Update. Time for a Change

I pledge to focus on core services. Storm water work in Motueka was deferred this year and people have had flooding events in their homes from normal rain events. However, the council was able to spend $1.8 million on a commercial building in Mapua. I will focus on core services rather than commercial buildings.

Richard has won the 1st Divison, Price Charity Cup and McCarthy Challege Cup with Nelson Suburbs and the 1st Division again in 2007 with Nelson United Reserves. Lutz won the 1st Division with FC Nelson in 2012. “A standout period for us was 2008 and 2009 when the Nelson United Reserves remained unbeaten and dominated the 2nd Division and Glen Stephens Competition,” Richard says. Duo race each other around Rabbit Island before China quest Jacob Page Nelson multi-sport athletes Trevor Voyce and Dan Busch rode to the start line together, came first and second, then rode home together after the Nelson Triathlon Club's first of Spring Duathlons at Rabbit Island on Sunday. Trevor beat Dan by 20 seconds, completing the 5km run, 17km bike and 2.5km run course in one hour and three minutes. The pair head to China on Saturday to team with Richard and Elina Ussher in the Wulong Outdoor Quest on September 5.

Richard, Elina and Trevor have won the race before, and with Richard being in some of the best shape of his career, hopes are high of a decent performance. The duo said they worked together during the bike leg on Sunday before Trevor got the lead he needed to carry him to victory in the final run home. Both men said the course was a perfect preparation for the four day running, kayaking and mountain bike race that will total more than 250km. "Me and Trev have done a lot of training together over the last six weeks.” The pair rode together from Nelson to compete in the event and say they think they have a team which can win in China. "This was the perfect lead-up race for us," Trevor says. "We are going to China to win, and while there are a lot of variables that go in to a race like that, I believe we can do it."

Nelson Provincial Museum – Hardy Street Windows to become Community Exhibition Space Nelson Provincial Museum is opening its Hardy St windows to installations from local artists and craftspeople, schools, and community groups. CEO Lucinda Blackley-Jimson says “This is a way to give back to the Nelson and Tasman people, and to provide both local artists, cultural and community groups with a free, highly visible exhibition area to profile their work.” The Museum is calling for proposals to use the windows for installations lasting up to four weeks. The windows could feature artist exhibitions, or projects from iwi, environmental, cultural and community action groups or schools. Send your proposal to ceo@museumnp.org.nz

Summer Sport Codes Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund Are you a Tasman rural based club or do you have rural based players? If so, the Tasman Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund can help meet your travel costs. Sport NZ Travel Fund reduces the barriers for young people (aged 5-19 years) taking part in local sports competition by offering grants to subsidise travel costs. The clubs must apply on behalf of players and the next closing date is 31 October. Application forms and further information is online at www.tasman.govt.nz/council/grants-funding or phone Mike Tasman-Jones on 543 8403 for further information.

NetHui is coming to our backyard NetHui is New Zealand’s most inclusive and diverse internet event - and it’s coming to our neck of the woods on Thursday 13 October. It’s been hugely successful and in the past has been run as one large conference. This year InternetNZ are shaking things up a bit and bringing NetHui out to the regions – and guess what – we’ve got the only NetHui for the South Island. So who takes part in NetHui? Nethui is open and accessible to everyone, and InternetNZ only charges a very small amount for anyone to attend. If you want to know more, including how to register, get involved or become a sponsor – head online to 2016.nethui.nz/. Alternatively, contact Karen Lee, the NRDA Digital Coordinator at karen@nrda.co.nz or Ph. 027 644 9800.

Second Hand Sunday Spring clean, declutter and participate in Second-Hand Sunday on 11 September. Register online at tasman.govt.nz (search term “Second Hand Sunday”). What is Second Hand Sunday? Freely given and freely taken away, the goods could include anything from old chairs, books, clothing or left over-bits and pieces from building projects but is not to include food, dangerous goods like faulty electrical equipment, or chemicals. To take part all you have to do is register online on either Nelson City or Tasman District Council’s website, and follow the guidelines. Treasure hunters can then view the list of participating households – which will have the poster on the letterbox – to make the most of the offerings on each Second Hand Sunday.

Intention to amend bylaws for the Abel Tasman Foreshore Scenic Reserve We need to correct some technical drafting errors within the bylaws adopted last year. The amendment will clarify inconsistencies across sections that made interpretation and enforceability of some of the bylaws difficult. The Administration Committee of Lindsay McKenzie, Chief Executive Officer, Tasman District Council and Roy Grose, Director Operations, Northern South Island Region, and Department of Conservation give notice of the changes under Sect 107 (b) of the Reserves Act 1977. The amended bylaws will be available from 16 August 2016 at the Takaka, Motueka or Richmond offices of Tasman District Council or from the Takaka, Motueka or Nelson offices of the Department of Conservation during normal working hours (post 15 August 2016).

COMMUNITY NOTICES ARK Clothing Sale The ARK clothing sale will be held at the Richmond Town Hall, 10am – 3pm on Sat 10 September. The ARK Youth Action Group is raising funds for an outdoor dog training shelter. The ARK is a charity which works with troubled young people and previously unwanted/ rescued dogs over the eight week course. Dog training teaches the value of patience, discipline and hard work. It also offers young people the opportunity to learn cooperative and considerate ways of dealing with problems which may arise during the training, which in turn provides alternative coping strategies in their own lives. Come along, support the ARK and find some great buys!

Northern Abel Tasman National Park Possum control operation

engAgemenT

♦ THIS IS SPECIAL ♦

As part of the ecological restoration of Abel Tasman National Park, the Department of Conservation (DOC) and Project Janszoon are planning aerial pest control to protect the Park’s native species from high possum numbers. This pest control is essential for native species recovery and ecosystem restoration. DOC and Project Janszoon have applied non-toxic pre-feed cereal baits on 17 August. This will be followed by the application of toxic baits containing sodium fluoroacetate (1080) during the next period of fine weather. Description of the area Part of Abel Tasman National Park, from a line between the Awapoto hut and the Awaroa River mouth, north to Separation Point and Whariwharangi Bay, excluding all catchments into the Wainui Valley. Exclusion zones have been placed around the Totaranui campground, Whariwharangi hut and access points along the coast. During the operation, all tracks within the operational area and the roads east of Pigeon Saddle will be closed until cleared of bait. Method of control Cereal baits containing the pesticide will be distributed by helicopter over the above areas. The baits are cylindrical pellets approximately 2cm in diameter, dyed green and cinnamon lured. The pesticide is poisonous to humans and domestic animals. Always remember: • DO NOT touch bait • WATCH CHILDREN at all times • DO NOT EAT animals from this area • DEADLY TO DOGS, do not allow dogs access to animal carcasses Observe these rules wherever you see warning signs placed at public access points in the park. For further information call Senior Ranger Janszoon at the Motueka DOC Office (03 528 1810) or visit the Motueka Office, cnr King Edward and High Streets, Motueka. A detailed map of the treatment area may be viewed at the DOC Nelson Visitor Centre, and the Motueka and Takaka Offices, 11am to 3pm, Monday to Friday.
