Enhanced service for air rescue More modern and better equipped air ambulance helicopters will be seen in our region’s skies after the southern region agreement was signed with new provider, Helicopter Emergency Medical Services New Zealand Limited (HEMS). Health minister Dr David Clark announced the third and final agreement on October 17 and says the new air ambulance services will be safer, better and firmly focussed on patients. “All existing bases in the South Island will remain. Bases in Nelson, Greymouth and Queenstown will have dedicated services during the day, which is when most emergency call-outs occur, and on-call services overnight,” says David. HEMS is a joint venture between two well-established existing providers, Helicopters Otago and Garden City Helicopters (GCH) Aviation in Christchurch. Simon Duncan from GCH says it will be business as usual for the Nelson Tasman region. “Nelson is one of the busiest bases in the country. It is busier than some of the main centres. It is quite a challenge, given the topography of the area. The fact that the region is surrounded by hills and mountains and quite isolated roads, the service is essential for people who need that skill set,” says Simon. New technology on the helicopters combined with exclusive-use air routes will enable missions to be flown safely in conditions that previously restricted the use of helicopters. Simon also says the agreement has created an opportunity for additional pilot crew and paramedics to join the crew. HEMS will be supported by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust.
Blake and Raiden Hearne at the speedway’s ‘Shine and Show’ day, held on Saturday, October 20. The display was part of the Speedway’s 50th birthday celebrations at Lansdowne Rd. Around 20 historic cars were on display alongside a variety of speedway vehicles - stockcars, saloons, open wheelers and sidecars - at the free entry show. After a spectacular night of racing on the Saturday, a large party of past and present members filed in for the club’s formal dinner held on Sunday night at Trailways. The Nelson Speedway’s next meeting is Saturday, November 3, with the annual Coca-Cola fireworks display from 6pm - 9:30pm. Photo: Amy Russ.

The Trust has also decided to add an evening opportunity between 5.30pm and 7.30pm on Wednesday, November 28. “With more and more parents and caregivers working weekends, we felt a weekday evening opportunity would be appreciated by some parents,” says the Trust. The Trust provides children with the equipment, and members of the public and the Nelson trout fishing club act as guides to show the children how to use it and, if they are lucky enough to catch a fish, how to fillet it. The fish out days are limited to children between the ages of five and seventeen and children may only catch one fish during their

Nelson Marlborough Fish and Game also propose to stock the ponds for youth fishing over the summer once the fishout days have been complete. It is anticipated the ponds will be open for youth fishing with parent/caregiver supervision from December 20 until the end of March. Details of this activity are available on the Fish and Game website, the Trust’s website or the Trust’s Facebook page. The ponds are maintained with assistance from Pub Charity and the Lion Foundation who have provided funds for weed control and paths to make the ponds more accessible for youth and the disabled. The fish are provided with assistance from Rata Foundation and Nelson Marlborough Fish and Game.

Local boss “bloody proud” of firm Rally
Emily Beaumont As this region copped the wrath of two cyclones earlier this year, many businesses closed their doors and sent their staff home to hunker down and ride it out. Not the team at Higgins Concrete Richmond. Instead, with the immediate threat of rising flood waters, they put a shout out on Facebook offering sand bags for those who needed them. “We understood the need to protect our own homes and could see that helping others to do the same was a way we could help,” says Bevan Muollo, plant manager. With their own operations halted by the severe flooding and power outage, they could have remained with their families in their own homes, but the Higgins team revealed their organisation’s ethos to their community. Now, their selfless actions during what was a trying time for the region with the devastating impact on infrastructure and private residences, have been recognised at the Concrete NZ national awards in Hamilton this month. Scooping the Extra Distance Award, an award only given out every two years, was a “massive achievement”. “We are a family business and

The company’s loyal employees put the community before their own homes, embraced the disaster as an opportunity to not promote their product, but to promote their company and support the community they love. “People were blown away
when we would turn up with sand at their homes and businesses and help stack them.” Despite the award’s recognition for ‘an initiative which calls for uncompromising commitment to customer satisfaction’ Bevan says nothing will measure up to their own satisfaction in what they were able to do for their community in a time of need. “I’m so bloody proud of our company and team for their unreserved commitment and dedication to our wider family here in Nelson.”

Greater local commitment for dam project
Richmond Preschool, on Oxford St, took part in the New Zealand ShakeOut 2018 at 9:30 am on Thursday, October 18. Khaya Gear and Garrett Crossan show their skills with what action to take during an earthquake: Drop, Cover and Hold. Teacher Hayley Ball says it is crucial that the children know what to do. “After the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes, I think it is important for the children to know how to react. Especially with the possibility of a ‘big one’ coming.” ShakeOut was held worldwide to remind people what to do in case of an earthquake or tsunami, and to check just how prepared they were in the event of an emergency. Waimea Irrigators limited (WIL), partners in the proposed Waimea Community Dam, have re-issued their product disclosure statement (PDS) as a result of the recently increased construction price. WIL has advised the revised PDS provides clarity to subscribers as to how the construction price increase will be managed by the irrigator company with support from an investment vehicle. This is a different investment vehicle to one described earlier in September, when WIL presented a solution to the funding gap
that had, a week before, effectively cancelled the proposed dam project. While it is a different investment proposition to the institutional investor proposed at the September meeting by WIL, the new investment vehicle is no less robust and is made up by local interests with a closer physical relationship with the area and a higher level of ownership in the proposal than the previous investor. “The change of investor should give ratepayers comfort as it reflects a higher level of commitment to the

Nelson Matters NOW NOW
MP’s from around New Zealand were in Richmond last week for the Select Committee hearings to consider 137 submissions on the bill I am sponsoring for the Tasman District Council to enable the Waimea Community Dam. The proponents did a powerful job of advocating the schemes merits. There was a chorus of evidence from water quality scientists that the Waimea River has a serious problem with water quality caused by the insufficient summer flows and that this project was the best solution. This included respected organisations like the Cawthron Institute, Fish and Game, Tonkin & Taylor, highly
success of the scheme and the future of the Waimea,” says Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne. “The project partners have ticked off the majority of the obligations that needed to be met by Financial Close on 30 November this year. With the renewal of the PDS introducing the new investment vehicle, we are a step closer to the proposal and the solution to the water shortage on the Waimea becoming a reality.” The investment model in the revised PDS does not change the obligations on ratepayers.
recognised local Landcare Scientist Andrew Fenemor and former Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment Dr Morgan Williams. It was telling that there were no submissions against the scheme from any freshwater scientists or ecologists. The Green Party’s opposition to this scheme exposes them as unscientific and impractical in their approach to New Zealand’s environment challenges. The economic evidence was even more compelling. We heard that the Waimea Plains is the world capital of boysenberry growing with 60% of the NZ crop and 30% of global production. This unique Nelson indus-
try will have no future without the dam and a secure water supply. We also heard from Waimea Nurseries, the largest commercial nursery in New Zealand, employing 200 full time and casual staff. We were told the future of this 50 year old business in Nelson would also be at risk without water. We also heard from many farmers and horticulturists with 95% in favour of the project. A few opposed the scheme because of the huge cost it would impose. This debunks the claim orchardists are getting a free ride. Their financial commitment to this scheme is huge. The submissions from industry

were universally in favour. Everyone wants more of our logs, fruit, fish and meat to be processed in New Zealand. The point made by Nelson Pine, Aica NZ and the Alliance Meatworks who collectively employ over 500 Nelsonians, was that a secure water supply is essential to their future. Nelson Pine Industries faces shutting down for up to 100 days a year due to insufficient water for processing, under the no dam minimum flows rules. We did hear submissions from recreational organisations like Fish and Game, Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ and the Walking Access Commission that the public access
provisions in the bill needed to be strengthened. I will be working with the Tasman District Council and Select Committee to achieve this. I want people to be able to enjoy the improved fishing, swimming and recreational opportunities. I encourage people who doubt the merits of this project to go to www. parliament.nz and read submitters evidence. Any doubts of the scheme by my parliamentary colleagues were quelled by the quality of the submissions in support. My goal is to try and get this Bill through Parliament by years end. It is critical to our regions environmental and economic future. Advt.

Red zebra crossings are coming to Richmond Richmond’s Queen St zebra crossings are getting a new coat of red paint, to make them more visible to approaching motorists. Tasman District Council (TDC) transportation manager Jamie McPherson says the crossings will work in exactly the same way. “We’ll be looking at some changes to line markings at vehicle entry points onto Queen Street. To narrow the area where cars cross over the footpath to access carparks. We’re also considering the placement of extra street furniture or planters to discourage vehicles from using the footpath to perform U-turns, which is obviously not a safe or sensible thing to do.” The work will be carried out over the next few weeks outside of busy times to create as little disruption as possible. Wairau Valley summer road repairs The New Zealand Transport Agency is advising drivers to allow extra time for journeys along the Wairau Valley highway, SH63, from this week into early December. Road repairs will be underway - from the Korere/Tophouse Rd intersection to St Arnaud village – from October 29 to the first week of December. Transport Agency Top of the South System Manager Frank Porter says, “We encourage travellers to be aware of road workers and to follow temporary speed restrictions through work sites to keep everyone safe. Keeping your speed down where sealing work is underway or has just been completed not only helps to settle in the new road surface, it will also prevent stone chips flying into windscreens and protect our crews.” Information is available from The Transport Agency’s Journey Planner website or call 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49).

Dam project critical in changing climate
In the wake of international scientists releasing new forecasts predicting higher global temperatures from 2018-2022, Andrew Curtis chief executive of IrrigationNZ, says projects like the Waimea Dam are critical to continue to grow produce and future-proof local communities against the effects of a changing climate. IrrigationNZ strongly believes that as the climate continues to vary, many areas of New Zealand will be at increasing risk of drought and to mitigate this risk, the country must invest in well-designed water storage. Farming educator Steve Breneger says if higher global temperatures impact on New Zealand we could be looking at hotter El Nino conditions than normal, which will affect our farmers and our food production. This will also have an adverse effect on home gardeners. “Large scale water storage, like the Waimea Dam project, not only benefit farmers but also urban communities. A look at Australia shows that a lack of water has wider impacts on the whole economy. We need to maintain New Zealand’s competitive advantage as an agricultural economy and ensure we can continue to produce food through all types of weather,” says Steve.
Looking after your service line The ‘service line’ is the power line that runs from your property boundary into your house. Service lines are usually owned by the property owner, not the electricity network.
A ride to remember Local riders from Tapawera, Sylvia Kelly, Tina Angus and Sharon Higgins during the ‘Ride to Remember’. Photo: Supplied. Emily Beaumont One Hundred and four years after 46 mounted rifle men rode out of Tapawera straight into the hell that was World War 1, the route they took was revisited on Sunday, October 21, during the Kohatu ‘Ride to Remember’. The ride, in honour of the
mounted men and their horses who served during the first world war was led by Mark Appleton, the president of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Charitable Trust. Mark was joined by nine riders from Canterbury and more than four local riders as they departed the Tapawera Village Green and followed the
Motueka Valley Highway to the Kohatu War Memorial, a journey of 9km, where they positioned themselves for the dedication service. A crowd of around 150 had gathered at the Memorial and heard a “moving speech” by Mark about society’s need to address post-traumatic stress disorder, among other ad-
dresses including a reading of the names of local troopers. “It was amazing weather and the whole event was incredible. The atmosphere and the horses and the people coming forward to tell stories made for a very successful day,” says event organiser Sarah Arnold. “It’s so important to create a memory for the mounted men.”

Big new Hospice shop now open in Richmond Emily Beaumont
When the Nelson Hospice furniture shop started out-growing their Bridge St premises, the decision was made to look for another location, so when a much-larger store became available in Richmond, combining the local Hospice shop with the furniture was a nobrainer. Moving the Richmond Hospice Shop from Queen St onto the corner of Gladstone Rd and Queen St, together with the furniture, on October 1,
has been a positive move, says store manager, Anete Smith. “We are loving it. The fact we have so much space is amazing. We wondered if we’d be able to fill it all, but we have no worries,” says Anete. The store is the first of the four shops to roll out the new branding and feedback on the signage and larger premises has been overwhelmingly positive. “People are loving it, they’re loving the space and the light and brightness of it, and also the quality of the goods. The
fact we have free carparking out the front also helps.” Turning second-hand goods into first-class care, Anete says the shops play a vital role for the community and are “massively important” to fund the DHB shortfall for the Hospice. With just 40 volunteers helping out in Richmond, the team would love to have more volunteers on board since their increased size has led to a larger workload. “We are desperate for volunteers, we would love to double our number.”
Maintaining your service line Service lines may be overhead or underground. In some cases, particularly on rural properties, the service line may be attached to one or more privately-owned poles. It is a good idea to check your service line (and poles, if you have them) from time-to-time because lack of maintenance can lead to a loss of supply or a safety hazard. If you are concerned about the state of your service line, call a lines contractor or an electrician to get advice. It is important to make sure that your service line is clear of trees as these can bring the line down during bad weather, leaving you without power. They can also pose a safety hazard, for example if children come into contact with the lines when climbing trees. If you think your trees are getting too close to your service line, get the right advice and help to trim them back: Option 1: Contact an electricity network-trained arborist to take care of the work safely. There is a list of network trained arborists on our website. Visit: www.networktasman.co.nz/trees-power-lines Option 2: The power can be disconnected temporarily using the safety disconnection service, allowing you or your contractor (e.g. a gardener) to do the work safely. Visit: www.networktasman.co.nz/keep-yourself-safe Be especially vigiliant when working close to your service line, for example painting a roof or eaves, or doing a job anywhere near where the service line connects with your house. If you have a buried service line and are planning to dig holes, build fences, plant trees or drive warratahs, make sure you know where your service line is before you start. If you are in doubt, get a cable locate carried out first. Information on cable location services is provided on our website.

This year will be the first time the Nelson A&P Show will host the Royal Equestrian Event as part of the weekend’s competitions. The Royal Agricultural Society (RAS) are affiliated with all the A&P shows around the country, and so are the New Zealand Breed Societies. Organiser Liz Harvey says, because it is a ‘royal’ event, there will be a full range of breed classes competing. “There will be Pintos, Shetlands, Standardbreds, Gypsy Cobs, Clydesdales, Miniatures, Welsh, Arab, Connemara Ponies and much more. We normally have around 230 classes on show during the weekend, but this year there will be 458 classes to enter.” “We are offering free competition entry for Introductory Level ‘Show Hunter’. It is an excellent way for people to learn how to competitively jump. It is run under Equestrian Sports New Zealand rules and will be held on the first day of the Show.” “The RAS run showing classes
at New Zealand’s premier equestrian event, Horse of the Year, in Hastings. For the Nelson entries, this local event will be used as a qualifying show for the Horse of the Year.” Aside from the class entries showcasing their skills, the public can look forward to the Presentation of Supreme Royal Event exhibit – for the overall best equine exhibit - on Sunday, at 1pm. Liz promises an exciting weekend ahead for competitors and public alike. “The entries are coming in thick and fast. Registration closes November 15, but ideally, we would like them in before then. We were hoping that Meghan and Harry would hang around New Zealand for a little longer, so they could attend our Royal event. That would have been great!” The Nelson A&P Show is on the weekend of November 24 and 25, from 9am to 4pm, at the Richmond Showgrounds. Presale tickets are available from November 1. Discount cards are available for people over the age of 65 with the presentation of a Gold Card.

Club President School holidays have just finished and like every school holidays you have to find ways to entertain the kids. Fishing is always a great option but early spring is not the best time to catch lots of big snapper or kingfish in Nelson. However, the wonderful thing with kids is that they don’t necessarily need to catch lots of great big snapper to have fun. I find that our kids always find ways to entertain themselves if they are outdoors. Quite often it’s enough to tow a lure along the boulderbank or cast a bait from the shore off one of the wharves along Rocks Rd. Kahawai have been caught consistently throughout the winter and their numbers will increase with

the oncoming spring. Unless you grew up in South Africa, barracouta is not much of a desirable table fish in NZ, but nevertheless they can be good fun on the rod if your leader is strong enough. Once on board, make sure you stay away from those teeth! Something else that keeps our kids really keen on catching all sorts of fish is the annual fishing competition of the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club. This is where you enter your fish by placing it on a measuring board, taking a photo and sending it in for points. Everyone collects points throughout the year until the big end of year prize-giving in June. This in when all the hard work pays off and you can be in to win some amazing prizes. Pipe major Callum Gilchrist says it was a privilege to be there, “the band did a great job performing at the festival.” The group were able to enjoy the sights a little while they were there, visiting the Bund – a waterfront area in central Shanghai, a silk museum, enjoying a night cruise on the Huangpu River and visiting the ancient River City of Chenghuangmiao. Helen says, “the whole experience was a great adventure for the team, creating close bonds, and everyone enjoyed the exposure to the different culture.”

the groups mingling, practicing and taking photos of each other, and then it was show time. Marching in front of the band, who performed together with the Queenstown and Districts Pipe Band, was exhilarating; negotiating the entrances and exits to the four different performance venues, with the bands playing continuously through crowd-lined streets – all while being televised to 240 million people.” Beginning in 1990, the Shanghai Tourism Festival starts on the first Saturday in September and lasts for more than 20 days. The region’s Celtic Pipe Band travelled to Shanghai, China, in September, to perform as part of the 2018 Shanghai Tourism Festival. Shanghai has a long history as a gateway to China on the Yangtze River Delta. It is the largest economic and trade centre in China, and one of China’s cultural centres. Shanghai’s colonial past is retained in the Bund. Travelling with a contingent of 30, Helen Gilchrist, Nelson Pipe Band’s secretary and drum major, says it was a privilege to be invited to perform. “The wait was exciting, with all

For the past 18 months, preparations have been under way for the upcoming Wakefield School 175th Anniversary on November 9th and 10th. For some locals, it will be hard to believe it’s been 25 years since the school had its 150th anniversary in 1993. “Preparations have been going really well,” says organising committee spokesperson Sonia Emerson. “We are quite deep in the detail now; we’re still getting a lot of late registrations which is good, and are hoping to get a good turnout, but it’s hard to know with these kinds of things. We have a good organising committee and things have been progressing well; we started preparing for it around 18 months ago, and the biggest challenge has been trying to reach people. We’ve relied on word of mouth and social media, and have had a relatively good response, with some of the registrations coming in from people living overseas. Our committee is pretty chuffed to part of such a special occasion, especially because Wakefield School is believed to be the oldest school of continuous use in New Zealand.” As a tribute to the school’s 175th Anniversary, Richmond resident Arnold Clark has written a book ‘Into the 21st Century’ – A History of Wakefield School 1993 – 2018. Arnold has spent the last 20 months voluntarily researching, interviewing, writing and compiling the last 25 years of the school’s history.

Arnold wanted it to continue on from Marion Stringer’s book ‘150 Years of Wakefield School Days.’ “Wakefield School is very special and significant. It is the oldest continuous school in New Zealand – opened in 1843 – just three years after the Treaty of Waitangi was signed.” A member of the Waimea Historical Society, and previous editor of the Wakefield Village News, Arnold spent many hours collecting his information. “I was gobsmacked by the number of activities and programmes that the school does and has done. In my opinion, it is up there with some of the best country schools in New Zealand.” In the introduction to his book, Arnold Clark praises the way Wakefield School has evolved over time. “The fact that Wakefield School has survived and flourished, and continues to keep pace with the demands of today’s world, is a compliment to all those who contribute to its work; 175 years is an amazing length of time for one educational facility to have been serving its community.” Arnold also points out that over the past 25 years there have been significant changes in education philosophy. “The buildings and grounds continue to be improved.

‘The depression years, beginning in 1931, saw rolls starting to fall, so the first school bus route was begun. Pupils were brought down to Wakefield from 88 Valley and Korere (Quail Valley)’ From Arnold Clark’s book “Into the 21st Century – A History of Wakefield School 1993-2018.” Even more noteworthy is the wide-ranging activities that the school has taken part in, for the benefit of the Wakefield community. The school consists of people, the Board, the staff and the pupils working together in a physical environment of buildings and grounds. They are influenced by the educational practises that are the New Zealand standards and requirements of a Year 1 to 6 school. Within this framework, Wakefield School has estab-
lished its own vision, charter, strategic plan and teaching programme.” Arnold Clark also relays some important information about the history of Wakefield School in his book’s introduction; Farms and sawmills quickly sprang up as roads were built after the Waimea Plains were surveyed in 1842. With continuing immigration pressure and suitable land for farming and sawmilling being available, the district of Waimea South soon
became established. Families were large, with many young children. Parents could read a little, but most could not write. Through the energy and efforts of Edward Baigent and his wife Mary Ann, school was set up a few metres east of presentday Treeton Place. The Nelson School Society Minute Book records that it was officially opened on October 8th, 1843.’ On completing his book, Arnold has described it as having been ‘a labour of love.’

Quotes from former pupils Marie Baigent (descendant of Peter Baigent), who is nearly 92 years of age, had some memorable moments at Wakefield School which she attended between 1933 and 1941. “I was there after the depression and during the Second World War. I remember our headmaster, Mr Watkins, had a disability of some kind. In those days the pupils had to walk down to the river for a swim, and there were only two classrooms with a cloakroom in between. There was a ‘kid cart’ driven by a Mr Cole and it came from 88 Valley because the school there had burnt down, so the children came to Wakefield School in a big old sedan. When I first started school, I recall my mother putting me on the back of the carrier on her bike, and we’d take the shortcut home down the railway line.”

Over its many decades of existence the school has seen many improvements made to its building and grounds, including last year’s addition of an all-weather Tiger Turf playground. The colourful playground features basketball and netball hoops and shooting circles. Another former pupil who attended Wakefield School between 1946 and 1954 said “everyone knew each other and looked after each other. We had lots of teachers ‘courting,’ – I remember a farmer coming to see one of the teachers sometimes. Children would come to Wakefield School from all over the region for cooking, woodwork and sewing classes. I remember making a green apron – you had to do it all by hand. Two boys burnt down the summer house and had to go back to the primers! You had to sweep your own classrooms.” Richard Martin, who attended Wakefield School in the mid-1950s says, “all the teachers were good sorts. We played lots of sports – we liked playing ‘bullrush’
at lunchtimes. I really enjoyed going to school; I looked forward to it.” Valerie Couch is not an ex pupil but has been on the Board of Trustees and the PTA at Wakefield School and has children who attended the school in the 1980’s. “They had a lovely time, had great teachers, and it was much more formal back then. One day I got a phone call from the school because our son Andrew’s eyebrow had just been split open with a cricket bat and he also had the mumps; I can still picture the little guy! The school were so caring. Today, Wakefield School is still very much the hub of the community; we are lucky with our teachers because we don’t have a big turnover as most of them live locally.”
Richmond Taekwondo students achieved impressive results at the Top of the South championships in Blenheim over Labour Weekend. “Saturday was a huge success for our club, probably the best result we have ever had, certainly in my memory,” says Gavin Gallot, senior black belt. The contingent of 17 competitors from Richmond Taekwondo managed a haul of 27 medals – 8 gold, 14 silver and 5 bronze, across the poomsae (patterns) and kyorugi (fighting) competitions. “Although the Blenheim tournament is largely considered a development tournament for the kids, it attracts competitors from clubs right throughout New Zealand, from Invercargill to Ruatoria, and was the largest turnout we have seen this year. In the seniors and black belt divisions there were even New Zealand level reps, so I am very proud of the results we achieved.” Included among the competing club members were two firsttime fighters, both just 7 yearsold, who “fought very bravely” with both taking home medals.
First-time Richmond Taekwondo competitors Mila RobertsGallot and Milosh Callaghan returned with bronze and silver medals respectively. Photo: Supplied. “It was the largest team we have taken in many years and we also had one of our members a qualified New Zealand referee who officiated at the tournament,” says Gavin. The tournament was a build-up for next March when the Richmond club will host the 2019
Tasman, Nelson, Marlborough (TNM) Taekwondo championships at Saxton Stadium. The club is currently seeking sponsorship for the event from local businesses, so if you’d like to be involved please contact Gavin by emailing gallot@xtra. co.nz

Tennis events raising funds for Breast Cancer Foundation The ‘Kelly Bowater Travel Rally Against Breast Cancer’ took place at eight clubs around the region on Sunday, October 28. Nelson Bays Tennis Association (NBTA) regional coordinator Ali McQuillan says, “this event uses the Cardio Tennis programme
to offer the Nelson Community an opportunity to appreciate the importance of exercise for health and well-being. And to socialise and, more importantly, to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. “ Ali says Cardio Tennis is essentially a gym
session on court with music. “It is enjoyable and achievable for tennis players and non-tennis players alike.” The weekend saw clubs from Golden Bay through to Wakapuaka run the valuable fund-raiser for the third year in a row.
“The fantastic weather really made the event a success, with parents and their children taking part for the first time this year. NBTA were thrilled with the money they were able to raise for the Breast Cancer Foundation. “It was a fantastic turnout. Nel-
son Bays Tennis Association look forward to making this a firm event on their annual calendar.” The event was held at the Hope, Richmond, Upper Moutere, Mapua, Tahunanui, Nelson, Wakapuaka and Golden Bay Clubs.
Volleyball was underway for the new season last week with more than 800 young and older players from across the region honing their skills in recreational and competitive volleyball matches at Saxton Stadium. The younger players commenced their competitions on Wednesday, October 24, with 32 teams (and climbing), Setters Volleyball (Primary Schools) filling the stadium with loud enthusiasm. Over
200 young players, along with their supportive caregivers, and the Stadium was buzzing. Brightwater School surprised all with 13 teams entered in this competition. The Intermediate-aged players followed on from the Setters on Wednesday and a further 32 teams of Spikers played out the evening across three grades. With players as referees on the stand and caregivers rolling over the scoreboards, the scene was set for some ex-
citing matches. Again, more than 250 players along with their supporters proved volleyball is the place to be. On Thursday it was the College and Competitive Adult grade Volleyball. With a “new” Nelson Volleyball League (NVL) replacing the Premier Grade, we saw six womens and six mens teams. The top seeds all walked away with a win, match of the night to Nayland B against Garin, 16-14.

Disappointing weather conditions in Mapua greeted runners and walkers as they arrived for the last race of the season; the Waimea Harrier 10km Road Race. Despite this, the scenic course was enjoyed by the 54 athletes who competed in the event. A very fast time of 38.58 mins saw Kim Hogarth take out line honours, with Hayden Squance and Charlie Squance in 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Colette Reed was the
fastest of the women, with Mary Anne Cant 2nd and Robyn Deane 3rd. Of the walkers, Don Bate was first home, closely followed by Peter Hague and, in 3rd place, Alan West. Tania Gardiner was the first woman walker to cross the line, with Elaine Llewellin 2nd and Paddy Tarrant 3rd. While the Harrier season has now officially finished, club members will not be hanging up their shoes any time soon, as there are races all through
the summer. Apart from the Saturday ‘Pub Runs’, each Wednesday there are the 5km series races. Today is the last race from the Turf Hotel and from November 7th, Waimea Harriers start their Eddyline Series with full details on their website. This Sunday, November 4, is the long-awaited Nelson Festival of Running, and we wish all competitors well for the 10km and half-marathon events.

Clouds of dust rose above Tapawera Area School on Friday, October 19, as students from schools all around the Top of the South raced grass go-karts. Students from 15 high schools spent Fridays during the year learning theory and building grass go-karts from scratch as part of the engineering course at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT).
Their ability to engineer a machine to stand up to the footto-the-floor racing was tested at the Top of the South Grass Kart Racing Challenge under blue skies as teams raced 20 karts. The karts all have a 6.5hp engine and the same gearing, so the best engineered and built kart usually wins. “It was massive, it was very hot and the whole thing went really well. The kids absolutely loved
it,” says tutor Kevin Edgar. While the event was not without breakdowns, all part and parcel of go-karts, says Kevin, the students worked tirelessly to repair any problems to make their next race. The fastest team on the day was made up of mostly Murchison students and Kevin says plenty of prizes were awarded with premium sponsor Opal Industries supplying socket sets and screwdrivers.

Special Olympic golfers enjoy their annual event Emily Beaumont The rain may have made the course damp, but it certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of the participants in the Special Olympics Nelson Golf Ribbon Day. The golf swings were looking well-executed during the warm-up as they eagerly awaited the annual event’s kick-off at Greenacres Golf Club on Saturday, October 27.

“I’ve practised really hard for this, playing every Thursday. I learnt so much,” says participant Clayton Marr. Karlin Spiers, who first started playing golf around ten years ago, read the athletes oath before commencement of play. Karlin’s golf talent was recognised when he first visited a driving range and these days he plays mainstream golf, fitting in two rounds of nine holes every week.
“The day was very good. They all put in a lot of practise beforehand and their skills have improved so much,” says Tony Naylor, Special Olympics Nelson Head Coach. The participants were treated to a presentation by John Towns, the patron of Special Olympics Nelson, and enjoyed their afternoon at the Greenacres club which has always “been so welcoming” to the golf enthusiasts.
Lisa Puklowski - for professional pool care advice! Lisa Puklowski has a passion for pools, so in 2016 she established ‘Nelson Pool Care’ and has teamed up with Antony Heyward at Nelson Para Rubber to provide a service which fixes people’s pool issues. “Antony sells the pools, liners, pumps & filters, etc and I install them,” says Lisa. “New liners and new pool installations are keeping me busy until Christmas, with a lot of the work coming through Para Rubber. If people have a specific pool problem, they can pop into Para on a Saturday morning, and I will be available to discuss how it can be sorted out.” Many locals will know Lisa from her time at Aquaflow where she worked for 15 years. “My father, John Puklowski, developed the business to what it was in 2009, when he died. I’ve grown up in this industry. I remember testing water when I was 14!” If I’m ever stuck, or a certain job needs an extra bit of working out, I often think ‘what would you do Dad?’ It’s been five
years since Lisa left there and she has now transferred all her knowledge and experience to ‘Nelson Pool Care’ and Para Rubber. “I’ve enjoyed training staff members at Para. We are able to fix any pool problem, for any type of pool, from small to large, vinyl liners through to concrete & fibreglass. Para definitely needs to be looked at if you are thinking of purchasing a pool. They look really good and they last the distance; I’m seeing a lot of older Para’s that are 30 plus years old, which only need a new liner and they’re as good as new!” Lisa loves a good challenge such as bringing a ‘pea soup pool’ back to being a beautiful, clear, sparkling pool again; the chemical side of things and getting the water balance right is where my passion is, and I enjoy making things as easy as possible for people, in a cost effective way.” For more information, visit www.nelsonpoolcare. co.nz or www.pararubber.co.nz Business Update. Consultation open until 21 November 2018 We’re consulting on a change to our Freedom Camping Bylaw that would allow freedom camping at the Fittal Street car park in Richmond. The change would set aside about 17 spaces for both self-contained and non-self contained vehicles to camp at the car park, near the entrance to the Richmond Resource Recovery Centre. Time limits will apply. There is already a campervan dump station and drinking water on the site, and we plan to install accessible toilets and a rubbish compactor as well. Freedom campers can contribute to our region’s vibrancy and economy, but some campers misuse local facilities and can damage areas valued by the community. Providing facilities such as toilets and rubbish bins in specified locations can help manage the effects freedom campers have on our communities. Find out more • Visit www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback. Information and submission forms are also available at Council offices and libraries.
Priority buildings: earthquake-prone buildings on important routes Consultation open until 3 December 2018 In a major earthquake we will all rely on emergency services being able to help. To respond, life-saving services must be able to continue operating and get to the places where they are most needed. We need your help to identify the important traffic and pedestrian routes in our District, so we can prioritise strengthening work on, or demolition of, earthquake-prone buildings. Strengthening or demolition of priority buildings will save lives. It will also keep our strategic transport routes open so critical services can continue operating. Background On 1 July 2017, the system for identifying and managing earthquake-prone buildings changed. The new system prioritises the identification and remediation of earthquake-prone buildings that either pose a high risk to the public, or are critical to recovery in an emergency. These buildings are called ‘priority buildings’. Certain hospitals, emergency and education buildings that are earthquake prone are likely to be priority buildings. Some other buildings may also be priority buildings due to their location, and the potential impact on people of their failure in an earthquake. Before we identify the priorty buildings, we need to determine the key roads, footpaths, other thoroughfares and strategic routes in our District. Proposed priority routes We’ve identified several routes we believe should be prioritised. Some are important because they have high pedestrian or vehicle traffic volumes, as well as the potential for part of an unreinforced masonry building to fall. Others have been suggested because they are likely to be used by emergency services and have the potential to be blocked by falling masonry. We’ve used the Nelson Tasman Civil Defence Emergency Management’s assessment of Lifelines infrastructure to help us. Have your say • Find out more and make a submission at www.tasman. govt.nz/feedback • Information and submission forms are also available at Tasman District Council offices and libraries

New builders’ app Do you book building inspections? Would you like to be able to book them on your cell phone? Come along to an info evening: Tasman District Council Chamber, Queen Street, Richmond, 5 November 2018, 5.30pm. Food and refreshments will be provided. This is an opportunity to see the new builders app, receive a demonstration on how to request inspections, get assistance to register and get started.
Red zebras coming to Queen Street The zebra crossings in Richmond’s Queen Street are getting a new coat of red to make them more visible to approaching motorists. The crossings will work in exactly the same way they do now, with vehicles required to stop for pedestrians to cross. The addition of colour to the crossings was recommended in a post-construction safety audit of Queen Street, which found some drivers were not stopping for pedestrians. The red markings will be more visible to motorists and improve safety for pedestrians. Similar red crossings have been used in Rotorua and Lower Hutt. The work would be carried out in late October, outside of busy times to minimise disruption.
Maritime event: Waka ama regatta Between 2.00 pm and 7.30 pm on Friday 16 November 2018 and between 8.00 am and 5.00 pm on Saturday 17 November 2018, (backup day 18 November, 8.00 am – 5.00 pm) part of Kaiteriteri Bay is reserved for Motueka Waka Ama Club’s annual ‘Waka te Tasman’ regatta. A speed-limit uplifting is also in force for certain vessels directly involved in the regatta. Vessels wishing to transit through or use the reserved area during the event may do so only after consulting with the event organisers, and then may only do so if and when, and under such conditions, that the event organisers may choose to specify. Delays can be expected, but access will not be unreasonably denied. Event communications are on Channel 17 on Marine VHF radio. If in doubt, call ‘Race Control’ or consult an event marshal (who will be wearing a high-visibility vest). Vessels entering or within the reserved area are required to comply with any direction given by the event organisers or event officials as if it were a direction given by the Harbourmaster. Race co-ordinator: Todd Jago 0274 335 040. Visit www.tasman.govt.nz for a map of the reserved area.

The Nelson Hockey Association (NHA) U13 girls (pictured) played in North Harbour, from October 8 - 13, for their national tournament, The Collier Cup. “The under 13 girls had an outstanding result, finishing in ninth place.” This is the second-best placing the team have achieved. At the 2009 Collier Cup, the Nelson under 13 girls team managed to secure a fifth-place finish. NHA hosted the under 13 boys national tournament, the Hatch Cup, the same week. Twenty-four teams from different associations across New Zealand attended and battled it out on Saxton Hockey Turf. Operations manager Fabian Amor says it was a fantastic event with a great week of hockey played and excellent sportsmanship displayed. “It was a great honor for NHA to host this important event and a fantastic opportunity for all under 13 teams to compete and play against each other in this full week, but also to strength relationships between all Hockey Associations. The under 13 boys played really well, with Nelson finishing in eighteenth place.” Photo: Supplied.
