Gallipoli visit for local student

TDC hunkers down, no big spending Tasman district rates will only increase by an average of 2.62 per cent annually over the next 10 years after council finalised a “constrained” Long Term Plan for 2015-2020.

Councillors met last week to finalise the Long Term Plan that sets out council’s priorities and budgets for the next 10 years. Mayor Richard Kempthorne says the plan focuses on “constrained spending” to reduce council debt and ensure rates are affordable without compromising essential services.

“We have created a plan with an average rates revenue increase of 2.62 per cent per year over the next 10 years and an average rates revenue increase of 2.11 per cent for next year. Our debt level at $120.3 million at the end of this Long Term Plan is much lower than what was predicted”.

However, Richard acknowledges that there will be some groups that will not be happy with the plan, in-

cluding the supporters of the Kohatu Motorsport and Adventure Park. The $26 million park near Tapawera is being planned by private investors for motorsports groups around the top of the South Island. “The Kohatu Motorsport Park was the subject we received the most submissions on,” Richard says. “Council acknowledges the value of the project to the region but it is not in a position to support the project financially - we have had to make a number of hard decisions and this is one of them.”

Councillors also decided against funding the proposed community facility for Wakefield and Brightwater. Submitters indicated the facility needed to be started soon because of the growth of these communities but council did not include funding in the plan.

The plan will be adopted by council on June 25.

Lauren’s road to recovery helped by house Simon Bloomberg Ronald McDonald House in Christchurch provided “a lifeline” for Brightwater’s Susanne and Justin Neal after their daughter, Lauren, was diagnosed with leukaemia last August.

Lauren, aged seven, is on the road to recovery after a two week-stay in Christchurch Hospital and continuing chemotherapy as an outpatient. The family has spent a total of 59 nights at Ronald McDonald House during Lauren’s treatment and Susanne says “I don’t know what we’d have done without it”.

“It’s amazing. It’s like going into a hotel and it’s such a supportive environment.

“The staff are so caring and they know everyone by name. They even knew what Lauren was in there for.

“You hear about Ronald McDonald House and all the good work it does but you don’t realise how important it is until you stay there.

It was a lifeline for us.”

Ronald McDonald’s House provides free accommodation and support for children up to age 21 and their families while they are in hospital but Justin says it was far more than just a place to stay, especially in the first weeks after Susanne Neal and her daughter Lauren have spent 59 nights at Ronald Mc- Lauren was diagnosed.

Susanne says one of the biggest benefits of staying at Ronald McDonald House was that it allowed them to keep their family together while Lauren was receiving treatment in Christchurch Hospital. She says Ronald McDonald House “understands the importance of family” and it was a blessing having Justin, who is principal at Mahana School and Lauren’s brother’s Jacob, 11, and

William, 13, staying with them during the school holidays.

Susanne says they have donated the proceeds from a Givealittle page set up for Lauren to Ronald McDonald House. They also donated the proceeds from a Dovedale School fundraiser to the charity and have made a family commitment to buy a present for a child at Ronald McDonald House every Christmas.

Last year, Ronald McDonald Houses in Christchurch and Invercargill supported 763 families with 364 families staying there so far this year.

It is having its annual street appeal this Friday when collectors will be out in force in Nelson and Richmond. People can also donate online at rmhsi.org.nz

Stolen bikes concern police Nelson police want bicycle riders to start locking their bikes as the number of bike thefts around the region increases.

Community Constable Peter Crins says bikes are the most targeted and easily accessible stolen property in the Nelson Bays area and that 90 per cent of the bikes stolen are not secured. Although Peter didn’t have the latest figures for reported bike thefts, he says the number of stolen bikes that have been recovered by police is growing.

“It’s a year-round problem and at the moment we have around 40 unclaimed stolen bikes at the Nelson station and another 20 in Richmond,” Peter says.

“People need to start securing their bikes and store them out of view to help prevent the thefts.”

“We had a $10,000 bike reported stolen recently. The person went into a cafe and left it outside and when they came out it was gone - it didn’t take long.”

In addition, bikes owners should record the serial number of their bikes so that they

could be identified if they were stolen.

Peter suspects most of the stolen bikes are used by the thieves for a while and then discarded or sold.

Peter is starting a low-key preventative campaign to try and reduce the number of bike thefts, promoting the secureyour-bike message.

Supporters of Tahunanui’s Modellers Pond are preparing a protest march before delivering a petition of signatures to Nelson City Council in a bid to ensure the pond doesn’t get filled in.

The Nelson Modellers Society has prepared a submission to the council and it will be accompanied by petition forms signed by thousands of Nelsonians. Supporters of the pond say they want to send the strongest possible message to councillors and, with widespread support, they hope a protest march will do that.

The Modellers Pond, near Tahuna Beach, has had severe algae problems since strong chemicals that were used to control it were banned by the council.

The council has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on investigations and attempted solutions to clean the pond, to no avail.

“It’s a community asset, it’s an icon. We don’t want to lose it.

Councillors need to look at the economics, but sometimes life is more than economics.”

She says whatever the council decides money will need to be spent, and she’d like to see that money go towards fixing the problem. “We already have two playgrounds at the beach. The pond is something different that can be utilised.”

Tracy says the other major issue for the council is the stormwater pipe from the Tahuna Hills that flows into the pond when water levels are high.

Support to save the pond has been growing. Tracy says more than 1000 signatures have been collected at the pond alone and there are dozens more petition forms in businesses around Tahunanui, Nelson and Richmond. A Facebook page has also been set up and that has attracted 300 likes. She says a date for the march hasn’t been decided yet, but it will be before June 11 when their submission needs to be presented to council.

HEADLINERS Fibre broadband reaches halfway mark: More than 13,500 Nelson homes now have access to ultrafast broadband, although only 1300 have signed on for the new service. Chorus have now rolled out UFB fibre to 50 per cent of the region. Independent broadband monitoring service, TrueNet, say they are already starting to see congestion occurring on the UFB network, although not at levels high enough to slow things down.

Five Nelsonians have been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, announced on Monday.

Sir Peter Talley, who owns the Talleys empire, becomes the region’s newest knight for services to business and philanthropy, while multi-sport champion Richard Ussher became a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

The Queen’s Service Medal has been awarded to Men’s Shelter manager Edward Andrews for services to the community, Judith Billens for services to Maori and Jock Sutherland for services

Edward has been the manager of the Men’s Shelter for more than 20 years and says he has never been in doubt about the good work the shelter does, but he Sir Peter felt privileged to receive Talley. the medal.

“I was shocked for sure. It’s very nice, especially because it’s from the Queen herself. It’s a real privilege, but also a responsibility. I’m on the Queen’s list now.”

He says he wasn’t planning any celebration.

“I’ll spend it the same way I spent last Monday.”

Judith has been acknowledged for several decades of work in the Nelson community, including time on the Iwi Health Board, Age Concern and Women’s Refuge. “Because I’ve worked with Maori and Pakeha for so long I have a foot in both camps, which gives me a good understanding of both.”

One of Judith’s highlights was designing a birthday cake for the Nelson 150 year celebration.

She says she was humbled by the award but wishes she could share it with the community she has worked in.

Nelson poultry, pigeon and duck breeders had something to crow about after taking out most of the big prizes at the Nelson Poultry and Pigeon Club’s annual show held at the Hope Hall at the weekend.

Brighwater’s Hartley Neal had a quacking good show, winning the Best Waterfowl with his Pekin duck as well as the Best Game Bantam with a light red male bird. It was the second success for Hartley in a week after winning the Best Game Bird with a Khaki Campbell at the West Coast Show last weekend. “I’ve only been showing for about 15 years and this is the best result I’ve ever had,” Hartley says.

One of the show’s organisers, Pam Buschl, says Hartley’s champion Pekin was one of 125 ducks entered in the show that also attracted 434 chickens, bantams and pigeons.

Pam says the standard of entries in this year’s show was exceptionally high reflecting all the hard work breeders had put into their entries.

“We had really good breeding conditions back in July and August and that was apparent in the show,” Pam says. “The breeders have also put a lot of work into preparing their birds for the show.”

David Dredge of Stoke won the Best Homer Pigeon, Laura Inglis of Mapua won the Best Junior Entry with her white Pekin Duck and Pam and her husband Rodger won the Best Heavy Breed with their Australorp pullet.

The the winner of Guess the Weight of Turbo the Paradise Duck was Roger McCormick of Nelson who correctly guessed 1.15kg. The children’s colouring competition was won by Joseph Cameron.

Garin College student, Sam Harrison, has a new perspective on Anzac Day commemorations after travelling to Turkey for the centenary of the Anzac landings at Gallipoli.

Sam went to Gallipoli after winning a nationwide competition run by the Ministry of Youth Development and New Zealand Defence Force to select three youth ambassadors to attend the Youth ambassador Sam Harrison exploring battle sites near ANZAC Cove.

Although Sam completed extensive research on Anzac landings for the competition, he says 1/3 1/3 1/3 : Interest Free +3 years free servicing on seeing the historic sites around Gallipoli Peninsula in April gave him a whole new outlook.

“I’d read about all that stuff but standing there and looking out on the landscape where so many soldiers were killed gives you a different perspective. Seeing the grave sites and standing on Chunuk Bair gave me a much greater connection with the Anzacs and what they experienced.”

Sam says standing on the beach where the Anzac troops landed was also an experience he will never forget. “When you are down on the beach and look up at the cliffs and ridges you T&Cs apply wonder how anyone survived,” he says.

Book Fair off to busy start Hundreds raced through the doors of the Founders windmill on Saturday, as the doors were opened for the annual Founders Book Fair.

Goods range from atlases, history books, novella and magazines to CDs and records, with a special children’s section in the granary as well.

Event volunteer Murray Farrant says he always looks forward to seeing people race to get in first when the gates open on Saturday.

“When the gates open at ten o’clock, we have what I call ‘The Running of the Books’ where the

keen ones sprint across to the energy centre from the entrance to scoop up the bargains, then there is about a two hour feeding frenzy.”

By Monday morning, Murray says they had already taken $62,000, $4000 up from the same time last year.

The book fair is open every day from 10am to 4.30pm until Sunday, June 7.

Students take on business challenge A solar-powered, life-proof cellphone case, a water resistant sport’s spray and a mobile phone app for tracking were just some of the innovative products researched, developed and marketed by teams of Nelson year 10 and 11 students in last week’s BP Business Challenge.

Waimea College students have participated in the BP Business Challenge for the last three years and this year were joined by students from Garin College and Nelson College. Ten teams of eight students completed the three-day practical workshop at Waimea College, creating a virtual company to develop a new product which they pitched to judges on the final day on Friday.

“It introduces secondary students to the world of business in a fun and engaging way,” Waimea College’s head of business and information systems Yvonne Daly says. “They all take different roles in the company and learn about research and development, finances, marketing and how to work as a team.

“It’s a great programme and we’re really pleased Garin and Nelson College joined in this year. It encourages and develops New Zealand’s next generation of business people and entrepreneurs.”

Team I Spy won the challenge developing a $40 portable tracking device that works on mobile phones which the judges thought was “innovative with potential for future development and opportunities”.

The team members were Brooke Gill, Jade Scandrett-Huriwai, Mitchell Trow and Jordan Williamson of Waimea College, Shannon Norton and Jessica Stock of Garin College and Rafe Charles and Sam Christian of Nelson College. I Spy members each won a Waimea College pen and Subway voucher.

With winter upon us, the delicious new menu at Armadillo’s will be much appreciated by those looking to stay warm and enjoy some good company. It features mouth-watering options from fettuccine and beer battered gurnard, to prime Ribeye steak, chicken schnitzel and melt in your mouth lamb shanks, there is something to suit every taste bud and satisfy your cravings. Their hugely popular Sunday Smorgasbord has been on offer since their doors opened a year ago and has always been a customer favourite, with three courses offering real value for money.

Although they are only a year old, Armadillo’s has grown into one of the top spots around town. “It’s a great place, the food is fantastic, service is excellent and it’s just got a great atmosphere,” says Tony. In fact, their success as a bar and restaurant has seen a number of return customers, keen to make Armadillo’s their local. welcome. “We have a great warm atmosphere and the staff are very friendly. A lot of customers that come in know the staff by their first names and the staff know them. A large number of families frequent the restaurant and we have even had children who have taken their first steps here! It’s a real family environment,” says manager Gina Jones.

Organisations, such as the Drag Association, call in around six times a year for their after parties, Armadillo’s recently hosted the Richmond Rodeo post-event party and Waimea College staff are regular visitors to the restaurant for special occasions, or to simply a pre-ordered lunch during the week.

Not only can Armadillo’s package a takeaway lunch for people who need a meal but don’t have the time to sit down, but they have a pre-order service for those with a set lunch break who want to eat in the restaurant. Pick your meal from their menu; specify a time and your lunch will be served within five minutes of sitting down. Their pre-ordering is often used by the neighbouring Tasman District Council and Waimea College staff.

Already this year the bar has been the venue for two weddings and is looking forward to two twenty-first birthdays. With a great function room out the back of the bar and restaurant, Armadillo’s could be the perfect place to host your event or special occasion. From kid’s birthdays to adults work parties, weddings, funerals and business meetings, Armadillo’s has a solution to your food requirements and event specifications.

More foster parents needed in Nelson Child, Youth and Family Nelson is looking for new foster parents and child carers and three Nelson mums are encouraging people to take on the role saying that looking after children-in-need is “very rewarding”.

Jolene Salmond, Cheryl Kingi and Alina Adamczyk are all busy mums looking after 10 children between them, and one on the way for Alina, when they are at home. But the child care doesn’t stop when they walk out the door to go to work every morning - in fact it just gets harder as all three are involved in social services dedicated to helping children in need.

Jolene is a team leader and social worker for Barnardos at Tahunanui, Cheryl is the youth programme coordinator at YMCA in Nelson and a foster parent and caregiver for Child, Youth and Family while Alina is a social worker involved in investigation and intervention with Child, Youth and Family.

All three are passionate about caring for children, both at home and work, but admit that, at times, it can become a little overwhelming.

“Before I had my daughter I found that the things I was dealing with at work didn’t really affect me too much,” Alina says. “But now I have a family, it’s changed.

“It’s made it so real and I sometimes find myself getting emotional when I see these children who have not been well looked after.”

However, Alina says the birth of her daughter has also given her a “wonderful distraction” from her work while a supportive husband helps her keep things in perspective.

“Sometimes it’s easy to forget that 90 per cent of what we see are things that don’t happen 90 per cent of the time.

My daughter and husband remind me of that reality.”

For Jolene and Cheryl, one of the biggest challenges of their child care duties is finding enough time in the day.

Jolene has four children at home and is studying for her masters in social work as well as working at Barnardos and says it can be a real juggling act to get through the day.

“I have all these balls in the air and I’ve found I get so busy I have to drop one every now and then.

“The trick is to remember to pick it up again. There is no way I could do what I do without the support of my husband who picks up a lot of our household responsibilities.”

Although Jolene deals with distressing family situations on a daily basis, she says that hasn’t affected her optimism.

If anything, the work she does at Bar-

nardos has a positive affect because “it reminds me of what I need to do to be a good parent.”

For Cheryl, looking after children is something her family has always done.

Although motherhood, fostering, care giving are challenging jobs, Cheryl says they are all well worthwhile.

“My father was fostered and my grandparents on my mother’s side always fostered children so that’s how I grew up.

But it also has to be a family decision because they are a big part of fostering as well.

“We’ve just finished fostering a 14-yearold boy and before that we had his brother as well. It can be tough but it also very rewarding.”

Richmond student earns acting diploma

Garin College student Jake Byrom Robinson is an Associate of Trinity College London after being presented with a Level 4 Diploma in Musical Theatre by Catherine Martin Trinity College of London’s New Zealand representative.

Jake received the diploma at a full ‘cap and gown affair’ at Nayland College Music Centre last week. Jake qualified with distinction and can now use the letters ATCL after his name.

Jake has been a member of Nelson Youth Theatre for a number of years and has taken senior roles in musical productions such as Les Miserables, Jesus Christ Superstar, All Shook Up, The Sound of Music and, lately, The Producers and Hairspray.

He then had to perform a piece he was given 15 minutes before the exam, followed by a discussion of the items performed, context, interpretation and the skills and techniques that he used.

“The hardest part was preparing a programme which included a variety of styles, while keeping a consistent character,” Jake says.

Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys will have to wait another 10 days before it plays Taylors Contracting Wanderers in the Tasman Trophy club rugby final after beating Central 60-23 in Friday’s game at Trafalgar Park.

The two teams topped the points table after the round-robin stage of the Tasman Trophy and will play the final when they next meet in the Car Company Nelson Bays division one competition on June 13. In the meantime, Waimea plays Marist in their division one game at either Trafalgar Park or the Tahunanui Domain and Waimea assistant coach Mark Milne says they are expecting a typically tough encounter. “Marist are always tough,” Mark says. “They had us in a bit of trouble in the first round so we will have to be on our game.”

Mark says they will need to improve their set pieces which were an area of concern against Central. Waimea will also need to retain its focus after switching off for 20 minutes after making a strong start against Central.

“We were messy in all our set pieces including the kick-offs. I’m not sure what was wrong although I think we were just a bit rusty after the bye.

“But I was pleased with the number of opportunities we created and the way we took them. We scored some good tries.”

The Waimea Old Boys senior women also had success against a Marlborough team beating Moutere 54-12 before winning their second game against Riwaka 52-0 at Awarua Park near Blenheim.

Waimea Old Boys have knocked off another top contender for the Nelson Bays division two rugby title, beating Collingwood in the Bay. Waimea have been unbeaten since the competition proper started. In recent weeks they’ve beaten strong teams like Huia, Murchison and now Collingwood and are top of the competition’s leader board. But a huge test is looming.

In ten days, Waimea will host Wanderers at Jubilee Park. Last time the two sides met Wanderers were the victors and the defending champions sit just two points behind Waimea.

Waimea coach Wayne Bateman says his team will need to be on top of their game to beat Wanderers. “We’re building nicely. I still don’t think we’ve hit our peak yet and we still have a lot to work on.”

Before Waimea can even start thinking about Wanderers, they have to get past Marist this Saturday. Wayne says Marist have been “up and down” this season and on Saturday defaulted to Murchison. “We’re not sure what to expect, they could pull one out of the bag.”

Waimea’s confidence will be riding high after their latest win on Saturday. Collingwood haven’t lost on their home pitch in more than two years and their strong pack helped the hosts score an early try to lead Waimea 5-0.

Wayne says it took some time for his side to get back in the game but they struck with a wellworked try to Kent Yarrell just before the half time break.

Waimea had all the running in the second half, scoring three more tries. “They were big guys,” says Wayne. “And they had a good first five. When they scored at the start we thought ‘Jesus’. We were rushing things, forward passes, dropped balls but then we settled down and got into it.”

He says the highlight of the game was the effort of his forward pack, which combined for the best performance of the season. “We took them on in the forwards and the pack went bloody well. Even our wingers played like forwards in the rucks.”

Captain Tim Fensom had a standout game, according to Wayne. “It was the best game I’ve ever seen him play.”

Waimea’s game against Marist this Saturday will either be at either the Tahunanui Domain or Trafalgar Park and kick off will be at 1.15pm.

Tough tournament for rep netballers Carol Cook

Russells Curtains Nelson Under 17 representative team travelled to Wellington to compete at the Marj Jenden Tournament over the weekend.

While the team has had a fairly limited build up, the tournament is used to test their skills against the North Island teams and generally work on gelling their combinations. In their opening game, Nelson were one goal down with a minute to go against Kapi Mana, however they ended the game on the wrong side of the ledger – going down 19-23.

Nelson learnt from their previous game when they met Wellington Gold.

The game was tight throughout, however the girls kept their heads to the final whistle. With the score tied, Wellington turned the ball over, however Nelson worked hard to regain possession and convert to win the game 2019.

Wairarapa were not as strong as previous opposition, however Nelson played good structured netball to dominate all facets of play to win 40-6.
