A pair of missing trampers were successfully rescued from Ka-

hurangi National Park last week, after 19 days lost in the bush. The trampers, Jessica O’Connor and Dion Reynolds, both 23-years-old, were rescued on Wednesday, May 27 after a 10-

day search and rescue effort, and taken to Nelson Hospital by an air force NH90 helicopter, to be treated for minor injuries. They began their tramp in Alert Level 3, during lockdown which

banned overnight tramps. Police have confirmed that the pair will not face charges for breaching level 3 rules. Before they went missing, the pair were last seen by a fellow

camper at Anatori camp. They told the camper that they had 4-6 days supply of food, which they decided to stretch as

New life on the bicycle Jacqui Rawson The humble old bicycle has been in traction for some 200 years, but there’s been a sudden surge in popularity as the old craze becomes a new one. The lockdown had its part to play in the new vibe. Gyms were shut down, sports ground came to a halt and we were forced off and out of the water. Which left us with three options for exercise: walking, running and cycling. Perhaps people prefer the longer distances, or maybe walking just doesn’t provide

Top of the South now Covid-free The Nelson and Tasman region is officially Covid-19 free. The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board announced last week that one hundred per cent of Covid-19 cases in the Top of the South have recovered. The last active case was discharged from isolation on May 21, and the close contacts of confirmed cases have been cleared. Nelson Marlborough Health Director of Public Health, Dr Stephen Bridgman, says that locals should be proud of the achievement. “The general public have also made a phenomenal effort to follow the Alert Level rules, and to get symptoms assessed and tested. Stephen says that the region’s effort has prevented community transmission. “This is clear in our testing data – of the nearly 7000 local tests over

the district health board. A total of 50 cases were reported across the Top of the South, with 27 of these cases coming directly from overseas, while 15 were linked to someone who travelled overseas, 4 cases were infected

from an unknown source, and a further 3 cases linked to those who were infected from an unknown source. Only 1 case is still under investigation, but the district health board believes that this case was linked to overseas travel. Three of the cases from the Top of the South required acute hospital care, with two cases needing intensive care. The region reported no Covid-19 related deaths. According to the District Health Board, 22 cases came from Marlborough, 21 from the Tasman District, and 7 from Nelson city. While the virus is not circulating in the region, Stephen says that locals need to remain vigilant. “There is a high risk that the virus will re-appear at some time in the future, so we should not be complacent and we should remain vigilant.”

Two motorcycle crashes over the weekend Busy traffic over Queens Birthday weekend saw two separate motorcycle crashes on State Highway 6 on Sunday afternoon. A motorcycle hit a car on the Kohatu-Kawatiri Highway, near the Motueka Valley turn off. The cyclist sustained lower leg injuries. Another accident occurred around half an hour later, when a motorcycle crashed on State Highway 6, further south towards Murchison. The motorcycle came off the road, and the rider sustained a leg injury.

Lost trampers could cost us 700K from page 1 long as possible, and live off the land, so they could spend longer in the bush. New Zealand is not known as a country where you can easily live off the land However, bad weather and low fog meant the pair became disorientated and lost, with Dion hurting his ankle and Jessica hurting her back, making it difficult for them to move. An extensive search and rescue operation began on May 19, 10 days after they set out and failed to return, deploying LandSar teams as well as a New Zealand Defence Force NH90 helicopter. The search had to stop on Sunday, May 24, due to bad weather conditions. Sunday and Monday saw between 60 and 115 millimetres of rainfall in the area. The search resumed at first light on Wednesday morning, after the conditions improved sufficiently to avoid any danger to the teams. The two were spotted on higher ground by a civilian helicopter with members of Land Search and Rescue onboard, after they lit a fire. They were then picked up by the air force NH90 helicopter and taken to Nelson Hospital. LandSar chief executive Carl McOnie says he is thrilled with the outcome. “It’s a fantastic result. Over 80 LandSar volunteers helped in the effort, including specialist teams. Carl says that the pair did several things right. “What they did well was that they weren’t tramping alone, and once they realised they were lost they stayed put. That makes things a whole lot easier for us.” However, Carl says that there are lessons that can be learned from the operation. “It’s really important to let people know where you are going, and when you’re going to be back. It makes our jobs easier and faster if people have a personal locator beacon.” Carl says it is hard to get a real scope of the cost of a search and rescue operation of this

size. For example, a three-day alpine rescue in Mt Aspiring in 2018 was estimated to cost $150,000. The Kahurangi National Park operation was a 10-day search and rescue operation. Cost depends on the size of the operation, Carl says. “Choppers are the main cost. They can easily get to between $2000 and $4000 per hour. A lot of the cost can be intangible, Carl says. “It’s the cost that our volunteers take too, taking time out from work, whether they’re employed or self-employed. They are committed to supporting the community, but there can be a cost for employers, especially at a time when a lot of people are struggling. New Zealand does not charge for search and rescue, and Carl says that cost should not be a barrier for those who need the service.

Jobseekers meeting challenge Jacqui Rawson Reporter

jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz

To compartmentalize where the current job market is sitting at present is equivalent to asking a kea not to chew the rubber off your windscreen wipers. A hard ask. Numbers are fluctuating. People are losing jobs, but businesses are also being cautious and recruitment agencies aren’t seeing big changes yet. David Norgate from OneStaff says; “It’s a bit too early to tell, there’s a lot of caution.” Expectations are that the coming months will be a truer indication of the full impact of the coronavirus. For recruitment agencies, numbers aren’t showing vast changes from where they sat this time last year. “There is movement, but we are actually sitting at 80% of the same figures that we were pre-Covid”, says David. “It’s only been a few of the smaller companies that have been cutting back on staffing needs or have changed their staff ’s hours, so far”, says Shirley Way from Advanced Personnel. Nationally, the job numbers were down in April by 37,500 which could simply be a hint of things to come. Predictions are that September will be more likely to provide the real outcome of the impact of the virus on the job market. David mentioned they’re not being overrun with job seekers but there has been a difference in the types of job seekers and with the levels of capabil-

ity. Currently OneStaff have three Air New Zealand pilots on their books. Without the chance to fly, regional pilots are taking on labouring work until they get the ok to head skyward again. Or, like in the case of structural engineer Dylan Phillips, who was made redundant from Air New Zealand, they have started their own business. Some of the recruitment agency’s clients were essential businesses in areas like food processing which carried on working throughout lockdown. Other clients are waiting to see how things pan out before they make any recruitment decisions. Still other businesses have been fortunate enough to have been busy throughout lockdown, but are still hesitant to recruit anyone with concerns the upturn in customers isn’t going to remain an on-going situation. The government’s wage subsidy has given employers breathing space to get their businesses back on their feet. But could also be a reason why staff haven’t been let go. The 12 week subsidies are due to end in June, but businesses can also apply for a subsidy-extension which will take them through to September. This could be when the real fallout of the Coronavirus shows itself. Major projects are another area which have had an impact on the job market. Because of delays in sign-off, it’s meant their large workforces are in holding patterns while they wait for the go ahead to restart.

Waimea College students were recognised for going above and beyond during lockdown. 14 awards were given to students who took initiative in their learning and used the time to benefit themselves now and for their future. Nearly 400 students’ names were put forward for the award, but students had to be nominated by four teachers to receive the award. Scott Haines, Waimea College principal, said that while there were challenges for students, the award was about recognising students who took charge of their own learning, and engaged with the work set for them and communicated with teachers, seeking out their own support and feedback. Scott said the school knew that the lockdown was a difficult period and wanted to recognise student achievement. Photo: Matt McCrorie.

Making our streets ‘healthy’ Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

When the country was told to ‘stay local’ in Alert Level 4, there wasn’t a lot to do, apart from walking around the block and the occasional bike ride. But lockdown may have changed the way people think about the streets, and the council seems willing to change with them. Richmond Ward councillor Dana Wensley says that the lockdown has made people aware of the safety issues around walking and

cycling. “Since lockdown, a lot of people are more likely to walk and cycle short distances, but people are realising that our network isn’t really set up in the right way.” As the country moved into Alert Level 3, the Tasman District Council has submitted seven applications for funding for the government’s ‘Innovating Streets for People Pilot Fund.’ The programme allows for quick, lowcost projects to be trialled, aimed at creating more ‘people-friendly’ spaces in towns and cities. A Richmond cycling artery has

been proposed as a safe transport route through central Richmond. Another proposal put forward is for Lower Queen Street, which would remove roadside parking, add cycle lanes and a zebra crossing, along with bus stops that are being added for the new bus route. A national survey conducted by NZTA found that over half those surveyed said that they enjoyed their streets more during lockdown. “It’s an astounding change,” Dana says. There are some obvious reasons for the change in opinion – fewer cars on the road, less traffic noise, safe

walking, not to mention community benefits. Dana says that Richmond needs to work towards a more active transport system that isn’t designed around cars. “We are moving towards encouraging more active transport in the close area around central Richmond,” Dana says. ““New roads and car parking buildings are expensive, Dana says. “We need to be a bit more creative, and think of low- cost ways to solve our transport problem.” Dana says that the lockdown has shown us that people don’t mind

walking and cycling extra distances if they feel safe doing it. Councillor Kit Mailing agrees. “It [lockdown] tells us that we don’t have to drive cars everywhere.” Kit says that safer streets will encourage more people to walk or cycle. “Look at Queen Street. The environment and the street were designed for a reduced speed limit of 30km, and it has encouraged people to slowdown.” “If we can change the environments of our streets, people will feel safer and we’ll see a lot more people out walking and cycling.”

Churches meeting challenges Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Churches have had to adapt and change throughout the Covid crisis, and that means that things are looking a little different now, with congregations around the region adapting and coming up with unique strategies to meet the challenge. Daryl Bay, lead pastor of Hope Community Church with a congregation of 700, says that they have decided to continue their online services, despite the government allowing gatherings of up to 100 people. “The church has really embraced the online gatherings that we have been having,” Daryl says. Throughout lockdown, the church went online, creating services that people could tune into on a Sunday morning. “Church has not stopped, it has taken a different a form, and people have really enjoyed the new experience.” Daryl says that there is a balance for churches wanting to get back together, but also being aware of the difficulty of the Covid situation. “There has been a deep longing

to get back together face to face – but a deep gratitude for the way technology allows us to get together in times like this.” Daryl says that despite the eagerness of his congregation to get together, they’re happy to wait until larger gatherings are allowed to go ahead. “There is a longing to get back together, but the government is doing their best to navigate difficult circumstances.” Peter Sommerville, pastor of Grace Church, says their church has made the decision to split into four services, each to accommodate groups of up to 100. “From 7 June we’ll have four services, 9am, 11am, 5pm, and 7pm.” Peter says that the services in the mornings will be aimed particularly at families . The services will be an hour long, followed by half an hour of fellowship, then half an hour of cleaning. The church will also be running seperate services on a Wednesday, exclusively for their older members who are more vulnerable. “The overall vibe is that people are keen to meet. People are hanging out to get back to-

gether.” For Paul Milson, pastor of St Paul’s Church in Brightwater, the 100 people limit won’t be a problem, with only around thirty members in their congregation. During lockdown, the church was sending out a sermon on video and sending that out for people to watch as well as doing a Anglican home communion video. “We are going to do what we normally do, but things will look different due to health and safety.” Paul says contact tracing, social distancing and hygiene practice will be key for the Brightwater church. There needs to be a genuine commitment to honour the protocols, Paul says. “Ours is an older congregation. They are tough, but they are aware of their vulnerabilities. The congregation has been looking forward to meeting together again, Paul says. “The church is actually the people, not the building or the worship events. I think churches have been good at taking care of their people during this time. “We haven’t been any less of a church.”

Paul Milson, pastor of St Pauls Church in Brightwater, says the 100 people gathering limit won’t be a problem for his small congregation. Photo: Matt McCrorie.

Short-term accommodation numbers on the rise Jacqui Rawson Reporter

jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The coronavirus might have stopped international visitors filling up vacation accommodation, but it’s also meant Kiwis are unable to fly north for the winter. Instead of leaving, they’re seeing their country in a different climate, the cold no longer a hindrance. With current figures, New Zealand is taking the global lead ahead of countries like Germany, France and Australia, in terms of the increase in short-term rental bookings. Six weeks ago, local AirBnB owners had all bookings for the forseeable future disappear. Some of the owners are pensioners, relying on the income from their short-term accommodation to bolster their pension, for others it provides the opportunity to save money for their own future holiday. “Airbnb contacted us, letting us know they would cover 25% of our loss, but we haven’t seen that to date,” says one source. Other Airbnb owners were fortunate enough to have international travellers stay over lockdown. Originally planning on staying 2 or 3 days, some ended up staying weeks. Dean and Helen Andrew, Airbnb owners from Hope, had a booking from a U.K woman. “She was traveling around New Zealand on her bike, staying in a tent. But someone recommended our caravan to her as a better option with winter coming on. She ended up with us for 5 weeks”, said Dean. Airbnb customers, on the oth-

Dean and Helen Andrew outside their Airbnb caravan in Hope. Photo: Jacqui Rawson. er hand, did not lose out as a result of cancelling their bookings during lockdown. This has helped to ensure the same customers are booking accommodation again as they run with the new sense of freedom level 2 lockdown has given them. Winter is normally a slow time for vacation accommodation which is perhaps a reason that the numbers are looking a lot better post lockdown. Tony Terrell from Discover New Zealand Motorhomes Richmond, says, “this time of year we’re normally shut and I’m off on holiday, but we’re booking 4-5 hires a day at the moment”. Is it because prices are lower? Not according to Tony,

who said, “mobile homes are cheaper this time of the year anyway, we’ve only dropped prices slightly compared to normal winter prices. Most international visitors don’t traditionally come to New Zealand until the summer when they’re escaping their own winters. And winter here is normally the time New Zealanders head off to warmer climates. Finally being able to get away from the home they’ve been locked up in for the last 8 weeks might have more to do with the increases in numbers. It’s another way in which the Conronavirus has changed the way people view their lives and see that things don’t have to remain the way they’ve always

done them. But whatever the reason, people are getting out and about throughout the

nation and that has to be beneficial for many businesses besides shortterm accommodation.

Locals to spread musical joy across the country Sara Hollyman Reporter

sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Two local trucks are set to bring smiles to the faces of care workers and the elderly right across the country. The two trucks are each currently being kitted out with an organ, lighting systems and LED screens, which share messages of connection and thanks during a one-hour free concert that will be performed at aged and palliative care homes from Dunedin to the far north. President of ‘From Us with Aroha’ charitable trust, Sarah Waterman, says the idea for the project came about from a feeling of helplessness as the country was thrust into the Covid-19 lockdown. Sarah and her husband Mark Patterson, one of the organists who will begin touring with the South Island truck this month, found themselves with a lot of spare time when evel 4 was announced in March. They immediately began thinking of those who were isolated from their loved ones. “We felt really quite helpless. I’ve got a background in care work so I’m not used to sitting there doing nothing, I’m used to helping,” says Sarah.

She says they were trying to come up with a practical way to help during the lockdown. An idea struck when Mark saw a video on YouTube of American organist Cameron Carpenter performing to a rest home from a bespoke truck. “I said ‘I think this could be something that could really help people’.” The pair quickly found others

keen to jump on board with the project, including one of New Zealand’s leading concert performers Kemp English, who will play the North Island leg of the tour. Local tourism bouncing back Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

With travel restrictions now lifted, the Nelson tourism industry is slowly beginning to rebuild from the damage lockdown created. Visitor destination manager for the Nelson Regional Development Agency, Gisela Purcell, says you can’t get knocked back much further than to have no tourism at all. She says about 10 per cent of the local population is employed in the tourism industry. “That is significant, and it has been a massive hit for a lot of people with some having reduced hours or even being made redundant.” However, now we are reopening, Gisela says the evidence is showing that people are starting to travel again. She says, with local support, it shouldn’t be long before the sector is thriving again. “People are exploring their own backyard, which is very encouraging to see.” Gisela says hospitality has managed to bounce back faster with people catching

up with friends and family at bars, cafés and restaurants in levels 3 and 2. But they are also starting to see more domestic travel within the region as locals try to support those businesses struggling from the effects of the Covid-19 crisis. “The whole visitor sector needs help and we are so lucky here, we are not a region with one iconic activity. From oceans to mountains, art galleries, wineries, breweries and cycling tracks, everything is close at hand and we are so diverse.” The NRDA carried out a tourism survey during lockdown and received a strong response. “We got 832 replies, and 97 per cent said that tourism brings some benefits to the region, everyone sees it is good for Nelson.” Marie Simberg-Höglund, from Höglund Art Glass in Appleby, says things have been quiet for the company, since a lot of their business comes from overseas tourism, but things are starting to move. “It’s been quiet, obviously we aren’t seeing the international

tourists that we’re used to.” However, Marie says that there has been some movement with New Zealanders starting to move around the country more, and she predicts that domestic tourism will only increase as Covid restrictions continue to ease. “Local people are starting to come in a lot, which is really great.” “We have seen more people from around the country.” One reason that people are moving around a lot more is special offers, like discounts for New Zealanders on campervans. “It looks like people have been taking that offer of cheap campervans, we saw a lot of people who took that offer over Queen’s Birthday weekend, which was great.” Marie says that it’s important for New Zealander’s to get behind local businesses, and tourism-linked businesses like Höglund Art Glass. “That seems to be important for people now, to shop and support local.” “It’s really positive to see local’s and kiwi’s back and supporting local businesses. That will only increase.”

In conjunction with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), Tasman District Council is offering a free service to remove hazardous trees from rural roadsides and adjacent properties, where they pose a risk to road users. The aim of this project is to improve the safety of our roads and redeploy workers from all industries that have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak and lockdown. We’d like to know about any problems in your area, particularly: • Overhanging trees or branches that could fall onto the footpath or road. • Overgrown trees that reduce road users’ views of the road. • Roadside trees that are interfering with overhead power lines. Fill in the online submission at tasman.govt.nz (search: tree hazard), or email us at projects@tasman.govt.nz, with your name, contact phone number, the location of the hazard and a brief description of the problem. If you can, please provide photos. Once received, we’ll assess your submission and prioritise it according to the risk to the public. If corrective action is required, we’ll assign the work to one of our teams, who will then be in touch to discuss the options available. Please note: This is a “one-time only” initiative with a fixed, 100% Ministry funded budget, managed by the Tasman District Council. Qualified tree specialists will be engaged for all tree felling and limb removal work.

Dear Readers,

THE VALUE OF AN EXPERIENCED AGENT

What’s happening to property values? This is the question that everyone is asking and the only true way of accurately responding to this question is to analyse recent sales evidence, buyer activity and the volume of offers that have been presented to vendors. Sales during lockdown were near to zero and for obvious reason, so we cannot add this into our equation. What we can do is to evaluate the level of sales and buyer enquiry post alert level four. The team at Bayleys have been busy and have written considerable business in all price ranges, including some multiple offers. Sales have been strong and there is no evidence of the need for serious price adjustments. There are buyers waiting for property, some of course are wanting to “play safe” which is fair given we have just experienced a life changing event. All in all though the market is still strong and for our region especially it is still a great time to sell.

Someone said to me this week that they had bought their home very well. The question is, will they sell with the same agent, if you bought well then you probably dealt with a buyers agent. If you want to achieve the best possible results then there has never been a better time than to list your property with an experienced, trained and knowledgable sales agent who can negotiate and navigate the pathways for you in a way that achieves a fair price for all parties. Having been in the industry for over 30 years, I have seen the market through many highs and lows and can adjust my strategy to suit every market condition. Call me to find out how I can do the same for you. Warm Regards,

Originair has resumed its flight schedule as domestic air travel ramps up. Photo: Supplied.

‘Positive signs’ for air travel sector Matt McCrorie The air travel sector has begun to whirr back to life, with regional airlines adding additional flights as the country edges back towards normally. Regional carrier Originair began flying again last week, resuming services on May 29. The Nelson – Wellington and Nelson – Palmerston North routes have resumed, with the schedule looking fairly similar to how it looked before lockdown. “We are offering four flights per day, on four days each week,” says CEO Robert Inglis. Air New Zealand has also begun returning early morning and early evening domestic flights, as businesses travellers begin flying around the coun-

try again. While the airline was operating at a mere fraction of preCovid levels during Alert Level’s 4 and 3, level 2 has seen a return for air travel. Air New Zealand announced that business-timed flights will be added to its schedule from June 8. Rob Evans, CEO of Nelson Airport, says that Originair’s return and Air New Zealand expanding it’s schedule is good news for the sector. “The good news is that the demand is meeting the supply. People have been more responsive to air travel.” Rob says while they knew flying would start to return to normal, it was hard to tell when. “It’s getting better. Obviously it’s quiet, but it’s getting there.”

Nelson Airport was seeing an average of 500 travellers per day last week. Compare this to pre-Covid levels, with around 2500 travellers passing through the airport daily in the winter. “It’s a long way off where we were, but we are working our way there. That will keep improving.” Things will speed up at Level 1, Rob says. “That will be the game changer, when we get to level 1 and we can have more of those restrictions removed. “The focus is on leisure at the moment, and we saw an increase in demand over Queen’s Birthday weekend, but business travel will gather pace. “There’s a bit to go, but we’re on our way there.”

Our Christian Community News and Views

Surge in teenagers requiring counselling since lockdown 20 years ago, The Richmond Family Support Trust started P.A.C.T, which stands for Parents and Children together. “We saw a need for affordable family counselling, so the trust raised money for community funds through Rata and other community agencies, and also private donations for funds so parents and children can access counselling,” says P.A.C.T Counsellor, Christine Rutledge. “We were interested to see how things would go in the lockdown and although children seem to have done quite well, we have actually seen a huge increase in referrals for teenagers since lockdown. Normally we see a really broad range of issues, and because we generally work with families as a whole, our belief is that if a child or teenager has got an issue, then the whole family has got the issue. What we’ve seen in teenagers is high anxiety, lots of stress; they haven’t been able to do what they dreamed they were going to do this year.” Christine says it’s a scary thing for people that we are not ‘in control’ of our world. “We have a belief system that we can control anything but that’s not true, and for a teenager that’s an interesting thing to get their heads around.” Christine says teenagers are ‘pack an-

imals’ so they have really missed the interaction with their peers. “Although we have had a lot of internet availability, it’s not always the healthiest way for kids to interact – there can be bullying and things like that via that avenue.” Christine says teenagers have also had daily issues such as sleeping, and family relationships have been a bit stressed over that time. There are four counsellors at P.A.C.T who each specialise in different areas. “We get lots of referrals from schools, parents, doctors and other agencies. Our counselling is very affordable and to ensure that no one misses out, we have a sliding scale so families can manage the cost.” ‘We believe counselling should be a safe, nonjudgemental place where we have the privilege to join people on their journey; a place to reflect, talk and be heard in a place of discovery and recovery.’ P.A.C.T is a counselling tool and support programme for parents, children, teens, young adults and their families. To find out more, phone 03 544 7594. Right now, Richmond Family Support Trust is low on funds for P.A.C.T counselling. During the lockdown, the ‘Community Pantry’ has provided welcome relief for many vulnerable locals in need of basic food items and household goods. Vicar at Richmond’s Holy Trinity Church, Reverend Stephen Hooper (pictured) says it has not only provided an opportunity for people to receive what they need but they have also been able to give back the community by donating items, creating a ‘two-way process.’ Stephen says the church has been receiving some lovely feedback from recipients about the Community Pantry and the way it has helped their situation. great cycleways but the lack of cars on the road during lockdown may have also helped spur wheels into action. Those who had been putting off riding because of concerns of the bigger boys on the road, such as trucks and cars, took the chance to get their confidence up within the safety of the deserted streets. But there’s more to the cycling boom than bringing older bikes out of the shed over lockdown. There has recently been a sharp increase in sales of new bikes, including new e.bikes. Mike says, “people who have never ridden before are now

coming in to buy a bike”. Particularly in the e.bike category, although road bikes have also shown a resurgence in popularity in the time after the lockdown. People are looking at e.bikes as means to exercise even if their general fitness doesn’t allow them other, more vigorous types of exercise. They’re a big help for older members of the community as well. “People in their 60’s and 70’s are buying these types of bikes”, says Mike. Nelson Matters

My work currently is dominated by efforts to save Nelson jobs. I am becoming increasingly frustrated by Government decisions that are putting people out of work unnecessarily. A good example is my battle to try and save work and jobs at Aimex, one of Nelson’s major marine engineering companies at Port Nelson. This iconic Nelson company employs 100 people in building and maintaining fishing and other vessels like Nelson’s new Coastguard rescue boat. It has already lost $3 million of work from not being able to get vessels into Nelson and has laid off some staff.

The Government is refusing entry of a tuna fishing boat from American Samoa that requires $400,000 of urgent repair work. Nelson has the expertise having last refurbished this boat in 2019 for $6.5 million. The crew pose no Covid-19 risk having been at sea for weeks and not landed at any port with the virus. The company is quite happy to put the crew in full quarantine while the repairs are done and get the crew tested. Immigration and Customs say no and Ministers have ignored my requests to allow entry. Officials say the vessel should go to Hawaii for repairs but that means Nelson loses the income and jobs.

ering from surgery. He didn’t want to waste any time in getting his fitness back up once he was discharged. The e.bikes are also a favourite for couples where one of them might have a bad hip or dodgy knee. In the past the partner headed out alone for their exercise. Now, with the ease the e.bikes afford, they can head out and build up their level of fitness together. “The lockdown went on for long enough that people were actually able to build up a bit of fitness and now they want to continue with that”, says Mike.

I am also frustrated over the Government’s business support. I have the Armadillos Restaurant in Richmond provided with an IRD business loan for $35,000 but then two days later IRD demanded that it be repaid. I am trying to resolve this to save the 14 jobs. I am also concerned by the lack of Government interest in the 100 jobs being lost at Nelson’s turbo-prop aircraft Regional Maintenance Facility. This week I will be supporting the presentation of Nelson’s 17,000 signature petition to Select Committee. My request is that Government tag its $900 million support for Air New

Zealand to jobs and services for regions like Nelson. The failure of the Government’s business and jobs support is illustrated by the Business Finance Guarantee scheme announced in early April promising $6.2 billion in support. The uptake has only been 1%. These problems locally and nationally show Government does not understand business. 40,000 jobs have already been lost nationally and the economists are forecasting 200,000 being put out of work. 4,000 job losses are being forecast for Nelson and Tasman. National has backed up our criticism with strong alternatives. We will take a practical approach to

border controls that will protect jobs and keep Covid-19 at bay. It’s about being smart and nimble in working with industries like marine engineering and international students. New National leader Todd Muller announced last Friday a bold grant scheme for businesses offering $10,000 per job. This is better than just having dole numbers soar. New Zealand has done well in flattening the Covid -19 curve and saving lives. We now need to move swiftly to ensure we do not flatten the economy and unnecessarily cost people their livelihood. We need to be relentless in saving as many jobs as possible. Advt.

Richmond man recognised in honours From conservation efforts to helping seniors and beneficiaries – local community champions have been recognised in this year’s Queen’s Birthday honours. Will Rickerby, from Richmond, was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his work in improving our local biodiversity by eradicating pests. Within the Tasman District, Will has worked for many years in the Richmond Hills, particularly Wills Gully and Dellside Reserve ,to build and maintain tracks, plant native trees, and to eradicate weeds and pests. He has worked on numerous projects that have seen the successful return of natural bio-diversity in areas such as the Waimea Estuary, the Aniseed Valley and the Richmond Hills. He was recognised for his work improving the bio-diversity of the Tasman region and maintaining local reserves. Gillian Bishop was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal, also for services to conservation. Gillian has been a committee member of the Tasman Environmental Trust since 2013 and chairperson since 2016. She has been the driving force behind the trust’s development of a cluster of community planting and predator control projects, and the development of a significant community conservation hub that connects many volunteer-run conservation projects in the NelsonTasman region. Dave Butler was also awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for services to conservation. He was the founding chairperson of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Charitable Trust established in

2004. The Trust was set up to restore a functioning ecosystem in Nelson’s Brook catchment area, to control or eliminate pests from the sanctuary and reintroduce lost species, as well as create an educational resource and to develop appropriate employment and training opportunities. Dr Butler led the project to develop 135 kilometres of tracks and pestproof fencing that encloses 700 hectares of land. Peter Smale, from Motueka, was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to seniors, the community and horticulture. Peter has worked in the horticultural research sector and contributed to the Motueka community for more than 40 years. He has been a director and chairperson of Abbeyfield New Zealand, an affiliate of the United Kingdombased Abbeyfield Society, a housing charity that provides sheltered housing for the elderly, and was a UK trustee for three years. Kay Brereton was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for services to the welfare of beneficiaries. She is the manager of the Beneficiaries and Unwaged Workers Trust in Nelson and is an experienced advocate for people within the welfare system. Roy Reid, from Takaka, was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal, for services to the elderly. Roy has been treasurer of the Grey Power New Zealand Federation since 2014. He has been a voluntary member and president of Grey Power Golden Bay Association for close to 20 years, also serving as Zone Director for the top of the South Island.

Hoult Valley Road, Wai-iti - The Man Behind the Name Marg Farelly Joseph Hoult was born in 1807, in Warwickshire, England. He married twice. The first marriage was to Rhoda Dickens in 1830 in Kidderminster, Worcester, England. Joseph, Rhoda and their children set sail from Birmingham, England, on board the ‘Prince of Wales’ and arrived in Nelson on New Year’s Eve, 1842. Joseph was listed as a bricklayer in 1841 England census. In 1845 Joseph had 7 acres of land at Wai-iti. He named the homestead “Willowbank.” Father and sons farmed and operated a sawmill, later adding shop-keeping to their activities.

During 1853 Joseph was given a government grant of 50 acres in Waimea South. Rhoda died in 1854 and Joseph remarried in 1855 to Maria (nee Fowler) Fleet, a widow. Joseph was a staunch member of the Catholic Church and until St Joseph’s Church was built in Wakefield in 1870, he would drive his family to the Catholic church at Waimea West. He donated both money and materials (totara and matai timber) in 1869 and also laid the foundation stone of the Wakefield Catholic church. In a paddock opposite Hoult Valley Road there is a derelict house. This is the house Joseph built for his oldest child, also

named Joseph, who took his new bride Maria to live there in 1859. Maria bore four children in five years - but the last, a baby named for his father and grandfather, died at six weeks old. This old house is probably one of the most photographed houses in the region. Joseph died at his home in 1880 and had lived in the area for 37 years by the time of his death. His funeral was well attended with thirty conveyances and a number of horsemen in the procession from his residence to the cemetery. His fellow settlers held him in great respect. He is buried in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Wakefield.

WEDNESDAY 3 June 2020

Just a thought... Daryl Bay Lead Pastor, Hope Community Church 2020 will be hard to forget! For many of us, looking back on lockdown is like waking up from a dream and thinking, “did that actually happen?” Did we really stay home in our bubbles for 8 weeks? Did people really fight over toilet paper, in fear of the apocalypse? Of course, for many of us, the crisis is still coming. We are yet to feel the financial bite, the job losses, the relational stress, the mental health problems. Either way, Covid-19 has been a massive wake up call to all of us about what’s really important in life. The great tragedy may not be the experience itself, but rather our failure to learn from it and make some good changes. What really is lasting in life? Where can I find true security when everything shakes? How should I invest my time and life? Don’t miss this opportunity to think about your new normal, instead of just picking up from where

you left off before lockdown. I believe that God is reaching out to you, using this wake-up call to invite you into a new normal with God at the centre of your life. Imagine what it would be like to have a peace that circumstances can’t steal, a story much bigger than your own little bubble, a wealth that no recession can touch, and a life that extends even past death? Jesus offers you an incredible invitation (Matthew 11:28-29) and his words are worth reading slowly and carefully: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Who talks like that? Who can make good on a promise like that? I encourage you to take Jesus at his word and find the new way of life that he offers. Check out a church in your neighbourhood and you’ll find a bunch of everyday people who have found the rest that Jesus talks about and who’d love to help you find the same.

While they haven’t been able to run together, many runners and walkers had been training and racing over that time and keeping their fitness up, but the format of their events was very different. Once we were in Covid level 2 we were able to have two semivirtual races at Rabbit Island with runners able to compete in small groups. Competition at the front of

the field was fierce with Brian Kemp, 48.45mins, taking out Chris Sharland by just one second. Katie Malthus was the first woman home in 56.06 mins, with Steve Pauling the fastest walker in 85.06 mins. This Saturday, the first event from the original winter programme will take place. This is the first of three Wallace Shield cross-country races held at Rabbit Island, with further details of these events on the Waimea Harrier website. Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are welcome.
