Supercross set for swift return Jacob Page

One of New Zealand’s best tracks will roar back to life after nine years with the Armstrong Nelson Supercross Championships next weekend. The track on Central Road at

Lower Moutere has had extensive work on it over the past few months and Nelson Motorcycle Club President Phil Prentice says it is the start of something big on December 14 and 15. “It’s been redundant and hasn’t been used for the past nine years

because of resource consent issues,” he says about the track which was overgrown until a matter of months ago. “Once we got it through our committee, we had three months to get the track up to scratch. “It was completely overgrown,”

Phil says. “It was like the Amazon Rain Forest. “Myself, Dan Burrell and Ellie Harvey have been the three main guys but we’ve had riders and the local community get in touch and ask us how they can help make this happen - it’s been amazing.

“Next year we plan to have the national championships here. “We did a questionnaire asking what our riders wanted and what came of that was that they wanted a supercross track.

Hope School conquers space Matt McCrorie They won big at the Nelson Masked Parade in October, but Hope School continues to reach for the stars. Hope School won the Kim Merry Supreme Award for their entry, with their spacethemed discovery, with kids dressed as astronauts, and accompanied by Elton John’s ‘Rocketman.’ After their winning Astronaut theme in the masked parade, the school’s youngest class, Room 3, have another exciting opportunity ahead of them. Continuing their winning streak, students entered and won a national competition

run by the New Zealand space agency, the “Message to the future” school competition. The students will have the opportunity to skype call retired NASA astronaut, Nicole Stott, as their prize. The competition discussed how many cultures have voyaged to Aotearoa at different times and navigated using the stars. “Today, New Zealander’s are still looking to the stars and we are creating new opportunities to discover and travel into space.” The question asked: what is New Zealands future in space? The class answered the question in the form of a poem.

New dining options for Richmond Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Richmond will soon be spoilt for choice, with three new restaurants coming to the area. A Zambrero Mexican Restaurant, Sal’s Authentic New York Pizza, and Aki Kitchen, a new Japanese restaurant. The three new dining options for Richmond residents will be housed in the new building on Upper Queen Street, which is currently in construction, and will be the final part of the development between Queen Street and Talbot Street. The three new eateries will be the last phase of the Upper Queen

Street development by Gibbons, who began the project in 2013 with a range of shops including Kmart. The Warehouse, Columbus Coffee, Couplands, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Tango Shoes are also a part of the development, with several office spaces in the building above Bed Bath and Beyond. Sals Authentic New York Pizza operates in major cities throughout New Zealand, after opening its doors in Auckland in 2009, and now operates in 30 locations throughout the country. The franchise is currently for sale through Kakapo Business sales. Zambrero is a Mexican chain from Canberra that has been expanding across New Zealand in recent years.

These two stores will be the first in the Nelson and Tasman regions for both nationwide chains. Aki Kitchen will be opened by Aki Sushi owners and will provide an authentic Japanese sit in dining experience, with a wider, more diverse menu. Charlotte Bidlake of Richmond Unlimited said that the new development represented some great new options for Richmond Foodies. “Richmond Unlimited are pleased to see more development in Richmond and excited by the new restaurants opening, as we feel it will help Richmond to be seen as more of an evening destination.” The development is expected to be completed early 2020.

Proposed speed limit change for Tasman Matt McCrorie The speed limit for over 50 roads in the Tasman region may be changed, thanks to a council speed limit review that was undertaken this year. After public consultation between September and November, a hearing panel has recommended to the Tasman District Council that it revise speed limits on several roads across the region, with 485 submissions made by the public. Out of these submissions, 375 supported the proposed changes that have been recommended in the consultation document. The council initially asked in September 2018 if the public believed changes to the speed limit should change on roads to reduce serious crashes. The council received suggestions on 46 roads across the region that people thought needed a change. In May this year, the council undertook a community speed limit survey, asking the public what speed limits are safe and appropriate for different types of roads. Of those surveyed, 81% said that a speed limit of less than 100km/h is safe for narrow sealed roads, while 91% said

Data has shown that excessive speed was a factor in 32% of fatal or serious crashes in the Tasman region between 2014 and 2018. The council says that road safety in the Tasman region, and across the country, has deteriorated over the past three years. Around 76% of Tasman residents thought that speed limits should be tailored to the road type, rather than a blanked 100km/h for rural road and 50km/h for urban centres. One road that has had a proposed speed limit change is River Terrace Rd. The hearing panel has recommended to the

council that the speed limit on the rural Brightwater road be reduced from 100km/h down to 80km/h. The consultation document identified this road as one of the top 10% death and serious injury saving sections. “These are the sections in our region that are expected to generate the greatest savings in death and serious injury if speed management measures are implemented,” the report says. The council will consider the recommendations made by the panel this December. The proposed changes can be found on the local roads speed limits review 2019-2020 on the council website.

New future for Westmeat Matt McCrorie Richmond residents might notice a change on McGlashen Ave the next time they drive by. That’s because Westmeat, which has been a part of Richmond for nearly 18 years, has changed hands. The butchery and wholesale foods business has now been rebranded as Raeward Fresh Wholesale and was taken over last week by local Raeward Fresh Richmond owners Gareth and Laura Caldwell. For the last 18 years, Westmeat has been owned by ANZCO Foods, an international meat processor and exporter. The former ANZCO business was rebranded and began operating as Raeward Fresh Wholesale on Monday, November 25, and Laura and Gareth say it’s great for the business to come into local hands. “We’ve been expanding the wholesale side of our business recently, and part of that was moving into another space.” Raeward Fresh Wholesale will be a sister store for Raeward Fresh Richmond, said Caldwell. “ANZCO will be working with us to provide quality products and great prices to the

Tasman region, and they have been complimentary about their store being acquired by Raeward Fresh which has such a good reputation.” While they will have the same owners, Gareth maintains that they will remain separate businesses, with the staff from Westmeat all remaining. “85% of the business is a wholesale food service, but the retail store which people know and love still remains a key part of our business,” Gareth

says. “Wherever possible we are looking forward to continuing relationships with those individuals and businesses that have been Westmeat customers and will continue to supply quality products to their particular specifications and needs. Our goal is to provide a smooth and seamless transition to our new business from the former owner.” Gareth said that given the stores’ specialised butchery,

they are excited about opportunities to grow the wholesale meat business. Foodstuffs South Island General Manager Tim Donaldson says the acquisition is “a worthy addition to the Raeward stable of businesses.” Tim says that the new butchery and wholesale store is a great opportunity for the business to continue developing. While locals may notice new branding, Gareth says that everything else is business as usual.

The Tasman District Council has a new plan to manage freedom camping this summer. Announced last week, A team of Ambassadors will be working throughout the region to promote responsible camping during the summer months. The trial ‘Freedom Camping Ambassadors programme’ has been designed to promote responsible camping and help to minimise the negative impact of camping on the environment. The council says that the majority of people want to do the right thing when they visit our region, but because the rules for freedom camping are different across the country, there can be confusion about where people can stay, and how long for. The ambassadors will advise campers on how to choose appropriate sites to freedom camp in, encourage visitors to respect our local communities and traditions, provide information on events, volunteer opportunities, and tips on responsible and safe camping. This programme will run until the end of February. Fines will be issued for those who ignore the advice given by Freedom Camping Ambassadors.

Remembrance campaign raises funds for Hospice Matt McCrorie Farmers Richmond is kicking it up a notch this year, with their annual Christmas fundraising drive for the Hospice beginning in mid-November and running all the way through till Christmas eve. The national campaign, done in partnership with Hospice and Farmers throughout the country, sees $10 Christmas Baubles sold over the counter at Farmers. The full $10 for each bauble sold in the area goes directly to the Nelson Tasman Hospice, to ensure that Hospice services remain free of charge for the community. This year’s campaign is focused on the way the hospice meets cultural and spiritual needs, especially those of Māori and Pasifika culture. This year’s baubles were designed by Māori artist Spencer Bellas. The bauble depicts ngaru, which is te reo Māori for wave and represents the journey of life, with multiple waves moving together as whanau. The fundraising campaign has already raised $8000 in the

It takes a village: Parents helping parents Concerns for algae

Algae found in Te Waikoropupu springs has been identified. The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) confirmed that samples provided were a type of green filamentous algae called Rhizoclonium. The council says that the algae is natural, and is no cause for concern. Council Environmental Manager Rob Smith says that the nutrient levels in the springs will sustain plant growth, and that while it may look a bit mangy, ecologically there is no issue. “Any management intervention to remove or dislodge the mats and allow them to move on is for the Department of Conservation to manage, but I don’t see any need to do so. A strong wind and rain event will probably take care of it.”

Website a great tool for avoiding fires

Fire and Emergency New Zealand along with Nelson Tasman Fire and Emergency continue to urge caution as we head into summer and temperatures continue to rise. Fires can and do start from the smallest

spark - especially in rural and semirural areas during the summer. The fire service reminds people that over the past few years, we’ve increasingly seen how, if unchecked, wildfires can go on to devastate people, land and wildlife. Fire and Emergency New Zealand is encouraging people to go to their new website to find out how to protect themselves, and the land, against potential wildfires. For those considering lighting a fire outdoors, it will explain how to do it safely, whether a permit is needed, and explain how to apply for one. The website also provides advice on other spark generating activities like ploughing, mowing and grinding for those planning to work on the land. Fire and emergency says that of particular importance as we head into summer, is the timely advice to rural and semi-rural people on how to protect their homes - before the fire season begins, by clearing anything that could burn away from the house - and creating safety zones to act as a barrier against fire. Parent to Parent, a not-for-profit organisation, started in the 1980’s as a support group for parents of a child with special needs. Susan Johnson sat down with Sarah Whittle, the Nelson/Tasman Co-ordinator, who is trying to raise the profile of the group, to find out more. How did you become involved in the program? “Thomas was born in the UK and was very sick for the first year of his life. I was given a very negative prognosis as far as him achieving the developmental stages, such as walking and talking, even what his eyesight would be like. He was in and out of hospital and tube fed for a year. It was very challenging but when he was well enough we moved to New Zealand. I was new to the country and to the health system but by then I was ready and open to asking for help and support. I saw a poster advertising a fun day at Founders Park for Parent to Parent. There I met a group of mums who knew exactly how I felt and since then I’ve built a village of support around me. I want to provide that same feeling and support to others. What are some of the ways Parent to Parent can help? “The program provides information and one-to-one emotional support for parents of children with special needs. Trained and experienced parents are matched with parents new to the program. We also have a research team that can provide free information to families and anyone involved in the child’s care on nearly 4,000 conditions. Much more reliable than Dr Google. We are also increasing our support

systems for the siblings in the family as they are also affected when a special needs child arrives.”

What kind of support systems do you offer? “As well as the information on the website and Facebook page we print a newsletter. I arrange support groups, coffee groups, workshops for example coping with anxiety, pamper days, and outings for the siblings, next year sailing on the tall ships.”

Sarah Whittle, part of the team helping parents and siblings . Photo: Susan Johnson. How does this help? “We want to tell the parents they are not alone, and they don’t have to do it on their own. We try to help them come to terms with and to accept the situation. Our main focus is strengthening the foundations around the special needs’ child, the parents, and siblings, providing them with information and support. I remember a mother at a meeting looking very lost and when I spoke to her she said, “My child has autism” and I could say to her,

Local kids get a lesson in giving from PAGE 1 Matt McCrorie While most kids are busy in class preparing for their end of year exams and tests, focusing on algebra, English or science, kids from St Pauls in Richmond are having a lesson in empathy. That’s because students from St Pauls are part of a Christmas Hamper food drive, along with Garin College, led by St Vincent de Paul. Students have been bringing food from home to organise into nearly 60 Christmas hampers that will go to families in need this year. After collecting the food, students spend the mornings sorting through the food and getting it ready to be organised into individual hampers. Elizabeth Williams, who organises the Christmas Hamper project, says that the gift baskets are important for many families in the area.

“So many people don’t have the money to have a good Christmas.” She says that it’s important for kids to see the joy that Christmas can bring, both for kids that are receiving a Christmas gift, and those giving one. “It really makes the students aware that there are a lot of kids that don’t get as much as they do.” The students agree. “It’s good to help the people in need who don’t have a Christmas like ours,” says Sophie Rankin. “When you get older it helps you understand that not everyone has what we have.” Lily Biggs, another student involved with the hampers, says that the working on the project has taught her that other kids aren’t as fortunate as her. “I think it’s important for other kids to have just as good a Christmas as we do.”

Garin College student launches first book Susan Johnson It’s a big deal to write a book and have it published when you’re still in Year 13 but when you have autism, the achievement gets even better. Yesterday was the launch of Sam Lee’s book ‘The Toothsmith ‘which tells a story of losing a first tooth and the visit from the tooth fairy.

Sam’s brother Ben supported him in the writing of the story as did his teacher’s aide Deb Baker with her support and encouragement. “The best thing about doing the book was it was a new experience for me, and I found out I had more talent than I thought. I’ve learnt not to ignore things that have time constraints and keep going

and don’t get distracted and push myself.” says Sam on his writing experience. “From the school’s point of view, we are absolutely delighted in Sam’s progress through this artistic journey and know that he has ideas and dreams now for the future. His book ‘The Toothsmith’ will take pride of place in our school library

and will be an inspiration to others.” says Lou Maguire, Special Education Needs Coordinator. Sam’s book wis for sale at the price of $15. The school has 50 books on a first in, first served basis and ordered books will be available in 2020. Please contact Garin College: loumaguire@ cloud.garincollege.ac.nz or dleefamily@xtra.co.nz

Council apologises for obscene letter Staff Reporter Residents of Lower Queen Street were shocked when they found an obscene letter from the council in their mailboxes last week. Advising residents of a planned water shutdown, a letter from Downer, a contractor for the Tasman District Council, began with “Dear C***” and was delivered to several properties on Lower Queen Street. The letter was quickly retrieved, and Downer and council staff vis-

ited each property that received the obscene letter to apologise to residents. An apology letter was left for those who weren’t at home, from Tasman District Council Utilities Manager Mike Schruer. The apology letter, issued by the council read: “Earlier this morning our contractor Downer delivered a letter to your property that contained inappropriate language.” The letter claimed that; “Soon after the letter was deliv-

ered, Downer and the Tasman District Council were made aware of the language. Downer staff immediately recovered most of the letters and apologised to those residents who had already opened them.” The apology letter went on to say that the Tasman District Council had no direct input into the writing or distribution of the letters, which was handled by Downer as part of its contract. The council acknowledged that the letter did display their logo.

Tasman District Council Chief Executive Janine Dowding said she was horrified at the language used in the letter. “I am extremely disappointed that some of our residents received this letter containing offensive language. We let Downer know that this is completely unacceptable, and they assured me that they shared our dismay and have taken action to make sure it doesn’t happen again.” Downer’s General Manager for Water, Gareth Mappledoram said

the team is working with the local community to investigate the issue. “We were appalled that something like this could happen and we are taking this very seriously. A mistake like this is simply not acceptable and an investigation is currently underway. The local team have met personally with anyone impacted to apologise.” A senior Tasman District Council staff member also visited the residents to assure them that council is taking the matter seriously.

With the annual Shop ‘n Win competition nearing its end, Richmond Mall Centre Manager Belinda de Clercq says that it’s an excellent way to show support to their customers. “We believe it is a great time of year to give back to our very loyal customers who have supported us during the year. Customers love a chance to win $5000 pre-Christmas.” She says that someone lucky will have an amazing Christmas this year, being able to spend an extra $5000 on their family. There’s no doubt that the competition continues to be a success. Belinda estimates that the Mall has over 10 000 entries now. “Remember to record your details on the back of your receipts to be in the draw or complete an entry form, both are accepted. All stores in Richmond Mall are participating. Good luck!” Photo: Matt McCrorie.

The Opportunities Party leader Geoff Simmons says Nelson is the ‘canary in New Zealand’s coal mine’ when it comes to low wage growth, the high cost of living and low productivity. He was recently in Nelson to talk about his plans and spoke to Jonty Dine. What is the biggest issue facing Nelson? Housing is the key driver of poverty in this country. We have restricted inner city building under RMA and central government has constrained council’s ability to invest in infrastructure which is why they tend to sprawl which just adds cost. The problem with sprawl is you have cheaper housing but pay more on the transport side. You have already seen the pressure the expansion to Stoke and Richmond has on the roading network. Our policies are designed to keep the cost of housing stable for 1015 years, so we have time for incomes to catch up. How do we address this issue? By making sure local authorities really have the ability to build up. With the kind of future we are facing with climate change, going dense in the city centre is the way to go for sure, Nelson is constrained in this valley and there is only so much space. The current RMA system makes it difficult for people to build upwards. We need to allow that to happen but to build upwards you need better investment in infrastructure which is a challenge as the government only allow council to raise funds through rates. Affordability is

Nelson Matters

It was a huge privilege to be one of the first to walk the newly opened Paparoa Track last week. It is New Zealand’s 10th Great Walk with the last created in 1993. It is the first purpose built for shared use by hikers and mountain bikers. The new 55km track transcends the Paparoa National Park between Blackball and Punakaikai. It includes two stunning new 20 bed huts on the Moonlight Tops and in the Pororari Valley. It also includes a 10km side track down to the Pike Rive mine site. The track was suggested to me as Minister in 2015 by Bernie Monk and the Pike families after min-

ing expert’s concluded that it was not possible to safely recover the 29 men tragically killed in November 2010. They wanted an asset that would provide an enduring benefit to the West Coast community that had been so supportive through the disaster. It has been a long haul from the initial feasibility study in 2015, exploring alternative track routes and hut sites and securing the $12 million from Cabinet in 2016. We had to change the National Park management plan to enable the new track. We awarded contracts in 2017 to Nelmac and Westreef for the construction. I am in awe of the job done by

DOC staff and the contractors including many Nelson staff. It is incredibly challenging terrain for constructing tracks, huts and bridges. I have awful memories of working in torrential rain as a junior engineer in Inangahua and Westport for Smithbridge in the 1980s. The annual rainfall in the Paparoa Park is 6000 mm/yr. The recent storms have triggered a landslide delaying full completion until Christmas although the official opening occurred on Saturday. I am a huge advocate and fan of New Zealand’s network of National Parks. My first big project as Tasman MP in the 1990’s was

two things. It’s not just high house prices, it’s low wage growth as well. House price growth is driven by Nelson being a nice place to have a holiday home. That pushes up the

The Opportunities Party leader Geoff Simmons spoke at the Maitahi Collab last week. Photo: Jonty Dine. cost of housing here. If you’re a rich individual why would you not want to buy a house in this region? There’s no disincentive to buy a house and let it sit empty for most of the year. On the flip side there is no incentive to invest in anything else. The New Zealand tax system is structured so it makes a lot of sense to buy another house. Compared to the rest of the world we have some of the highest taxes on business and some of the lowest on housing.

It’s no surprise we put more of our money into housing than any other country, we don’t invest in business, to the detriment of our incomes. How did we get here? New Zealand is obsessed with owning houses. Renting is not an option in New Zealand. There is no security of tenure. For our own long-term prosperity, we shouldn’t all be buying houses. In Germany, 60 per cent of people rent because it’s a long-term affordable option, they have much stronger renting rights and their tax system doesn’t favour housing over business. Owning a home is not economically or socially good for us. New Zealand isn’t seen as a place to do business, it’s seen as a place to have a nice lifestyle. Foreigners buy property here to have a nice lifestyle and tax benefits. What the rest of the world is doing to New Zealand is what Kiwis do to Nelson. What’s the endgame of all this investment in housing? There isn’t one. We will eventually turn into a country we don’t want to be where it’s so inequitable we are putting up fences and hiring security guards. If you are given $100,000 you have three options. Put it in the bank, invest in shares or buy a property.

creating the Kahurangi National Park. I initiated the process for creating the Rakiura National Park on Stewart Island as Conservation Minister in 1999 and have been involved in many extensions including to the Paparoa National Park. These areas warrant strong protection but we should also maximise the opportunity for people to enjoy these precious parks. It was a deliberate decision to include mountain bikers and the track has been designed accordingly. I previously provided for winter mountain bike access to the Heaphy Track in 2009 and that has been a success. Inter-

national mountain bike experts involved in the design of the Paparoa Track say it will be the best in the world. The feasibility study for this new track projected that after five years it would attract 1000 users per year. The bookings for the next six months are over 3000. It is important that New Zealanders get preferred access, thus the higher hut charges for international tourists. The new Paparoa Track adds to the amazing outdoor opportunities we have within a few hours’ drive. These help make Nelson such a great place to live. Advt.

Just a thought... Peter Somervell There is a yearning deep within every human heart to be happy. “All men seek happiness,” the philosopher Blaise Pascal said, “This is without exception. Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end.” Type the words, “how to be happy” into your internet and Google yielded over 10 billion hits. That tells me two things: 1.happiness

is a deep need in our world, and 2. there is no shortage of options. Advertisers know this and work at targeting where we itch. Drink this coffee brand and it will make you happier; drive this car and you’ll be happy like this family - as we see a couple gazing adoringly at each other with their kids in the back laughing and enjoying the ride. Reality tells a different story as we all know. But we fall for it again and again. We chase

Just like King Solomon before me, I found life to be futile and chasing the wind. Why? Because when God created us, he placed deep within our hearts a void. We try filling this void with all kinds of things

Community Dam Moves forward – 27.11.19

Student digs in for fundraising effort – 13.11.19 On the 17th of November Tani Amosa’s grandparents opened their garden to the public to help raise funds for a school trip. Kerry and Carolyn Walker charged $5 per adult and with a $30 donation the total raised was $630. Tani is raising money for a World Challenge trip his class is taking to Borneo in 2021. The garden opening was his first idea to raise money to fund the $7500 he will need to make the trip.

drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again.” (John 4:13–14) The “water” Jesus was referring to is eternal life which is found through a saving relationship with him. When you find that life, you learn the source of your happiness is Jesus Himself. The answer is not religion or meditation or material things. The answer to man’s happiness – YOUR happiness, is God.

What would it look like to step back in time to the first Christmas? Who would you meet? What would you see? This December at the Headingly Centre, you can find out. Enter a time capsule that will transport you back in time over 2000 years ago to the land of Israel. Be led on a tour by a Centurion to a discovery of a lifetime. Experience the sights, smells and sounds of a Bethlehem marketplace. Hear from angels and shepherds; Mary and Joseph, and experience for yourself the Christmas story as it is told in the bible. You’ll be amazed as you see it all come to life. When the Christmas Journey production was first launched two years ago, there was a huge response from the public. Something resonated in the hearts of people seeing an ancient story come to life. When it came to the final scene, with Mary holding

baby Jesus in her arms, and she then sings about who he really is and what it all means, many were brought to tears. The folk at Grace Church learned something from this. People don’t want fantasy; they want reality. They are not interested in religion; they want something that is relevant to real life. The Christmas Journey provides all that, and more. How about you? Art society celebrates 130 years Kate Russell In 1889, a group of art minded friends started meeting once a month in Nelson to paint, share drawings and contribute ideas. Now 130 years on, and many artworks and members later, the Suter Art Society is one of the oldest art groups in the country. Founded by Bishop

Suter as the Bishopdale Sketching Club some 10 years before the Suter Art Gallery opened, the society is still nurturing, developing and promoting art in the region. With a dedicated exhibition space within the gallery, they offer memberships and benefits, including exhibiting, workshops, trips and events. President Larisse Hall

says with over 200 members, they are continuing to grow. “This year we had 40 membership applications with over 20 accepted. From what we can remember, that is the most we’ve ever had.” Their annual Cash n Carry exhibition opened last week, where you can purchase work from members on the spot.

Larisse says 197 artworks have been submitted for the exhibition, ranging from paintings, photography and ceramics to sculptures and glass. “As works sell, they will be replaced with a new piece, so people have the opportunity to come back for something different.” The exhibition runs until February 2.

Stihl ShoP MaRine

s w e N g n i h s Fi Fishing in Tasman Bay Andrea Fensom The bay is on fire according to Facebook and friends who have been out fishing for snapper! We set out with our son, daughter-in-law and grandson at 5.30am on Saturday morning to see if the rumours were true. This season, we have had a couple of trips out – catching two snapper one trip and one the next. We were hoping to improve our catch this trip. The sea was rough and wind was blowing so obviously either the weatherman was wrong or we interpreted the report wrong. Ah well, we eventually got to our spot and proceeded to fish. After about half an hour, Selina (our daughter-in-law) pulled up the first snapper on a flasher rig. I am thinking this is a good start! Between her and I there is a mini competition going on as on our last trip together she managed to pull in a snapper on

MY rod while I was making the coffee! Ah well all’s fair etc! I was the next one to pull up a nice snapper. Mine was caught on a lure but I decided not to chance my luck with just the lure so added a bit of bait to be on the safe side. Troy (our son) caught the biggest fish of the day which was a 9lb snapper. Our grandson Kayden also caught a nice snapper but slightly smaller than Dad’s. In the meanwhile Poppa was doing his best to detract the sharks from our rods –good job Brian! The sea conditions improved for a while and then deteriorated again on our way in. And the overcast day (again not predicted) turned out to be smoke from Aussie. I hear that Sunday was a lot busier at the ramp and patience was required. We were at home enjoying a sleep in!

Troy with a good snapper and the haze of Australian bushfire smoke behind him.

Naomi is now completely tobacco-free as she prepares for the birth of her first child. The 24-year-old had been a heavy smoker since her late teens, spending at least $120 a week on cigarettes. She was stressed, depressed and constantly thinking about money for her next smoke. But when Naomi found out she was going to be a mother, she vowed to quit. “I want to create an environment for my baby where smoking is not ok. I don’t want her growing up thinking it’s ok, there are other tools to use when you’re stressed.” She says it was the biggest challenge of her life. “It was the hardest thing I have ever done, but I am a lot happier now.” Naomi sought the guidance of quit coach Sonia Hepi-Treano at Te Piki Oranga. “You need that support behind you, you can’t do it on your own, having a quit coach really helped me.” Naomi says seeing the results on the breathalyser was a big motivator, as well as receiving grocery vouchers after reaching certain smoke-free milestones. Naomi has both seen and felt the benefits. “I’m able to breathe better during my exercise. Now I can walk twice up the Tamaki Steps which I couldn’t before and I have more money to buy the things I need for baby.” Naomi says vaping has been a crucial tool in her journey but says it is not a long-term solution.

Motivated by her pregnancy, Naomi Te Kiri has successfully quit smoking. Photo: Jonty Dine. At 35 weeks pregnant, Naomi is still working at the Honest Lawyer Pub and recently registered to study at NMIT as she works toward becoming a social worker. Sonia says after the baby is born, mothers often relapse as they think ‘my body is my own again’, not to mention a host of new stresses. However, Naomi is confident she will remain smoke-free postpartum. “I’m fluent in saying ‘no’ now.” Naomi was further motivated by her father who has been smoke-free for a year and a half. “I’ve looked up to him, I thought ‘if he can do it then I can.”

She has some sage advice for others looking to quit. “Be determined and stay positive, keep a routine.” To recognise her achievement, Naomi was gifted a flax basket designed for burial of the whenua (placenta) and pito (umbilical cord). Smokefree Team Leader at Nelson Marlborough Health, Kelly Atkinson, was on hand to make the presentation. “It’s a huge step and commitment to protect their pepe.” Naomi says now that she has overcome her tobacco addiction, she has more self-belief than ever. “I know I can do anything I set my mind to and I know I’m going to be a good mum.”

“We went to (former professional motocross rider) Josh Coppins and said can we do a speed week with the speedway and he said we already had a track.” He says he is expecting between 80 and 100 riders to compete and they were aiming for 1000 spectators.” He says people are guaranteed quality racing across MX1, MX2, SX lites, vets and juniors. “Racing will be on point,” he says. “It’ll be back the way it used to be, there will be guys throwing the bikes in the air trying to save as many split seconds as they can. “This has been Dan’s baby, he’s taken two weeks off work to get this going so it’s going to be huge. “We want it to be a family event with grandstands and a great atmosphere.” He said the aim was to try to find land in Nelson to add a second track in time as the sport grows in popularity.

Peter Gibbs Luke Kelly and Abbey Smale continued their winning form at race four of the Port Nelson Swim Series on Thursday. Swimmers took on a 900m triangular course, heading south to round one of the boats moored offshore before heading out to the ‘dolphin’ navigation marker then back to shore at the Nelson Yacht Club ramp. A bunch of about a dozen stuck together on the first leg, spreading as they headed towards the dolphin with Luke, Fergus Drummond and Bendi Kepess breaking away. These three stayed together with the final sprint separating them by fractions of a second: Luke Kelly 10min 5.6sec, Fergus Drummond 10m 6.2s, Luke Kelly won Thursday’s Port Nelson swim in a tight finish. and Hayden Squance (10.27) led in Abbey Smale (10.46) with Sophie Alexander taking the second women’s spot in 11.44. The top of the points table has become a battle between 22-yearold Luke Kelly and a bunch of 15 and 16-yearolds who train together at the Richmond Aquatic Centre, with triathlete Hayden Squance (22) also in the mix. While there’s nothing to separate many in this group on speed, Luke, often has the upper hand when it comes to a sprint. In the short swim over 400m, Brooke Swan remains unbeaten this season, while Corey Tremblay leads the men’s field - also unbeaten within this group. Swimming continues each Thursday over the summer. Tasman Thunder thump the Crushers Jody Scott The Tasman Thunder exacted revenge on the Canterbury Crushers by winning both teams races in epic fashion on Saturday at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway. Three big rollovers in as many laps gave the crowd plenty to feast on. The first was Thunder speedster and South Island champion Keightley Teece who was hit hard in the turn one wall, the car flying up and over, with both car and driver looking a little second hand. The team rallied with captain Michael Paynter pulling out a deft move rolling the lead Crusher. The other was set up by Dylan Clarke who shoved the Crusher car out to the wall and Dylan Hall finished him off leaving it upside down, there was plenty of work in the pits to get the cars out for the second race. John Everett took a few big hits as he replaced Teece but dished plenty out as well. Clarke took off in the lead and was never headed, several cars

The team was made up of a few locals mixed with a couple of visiting drivers. It was local driver Thomas Macleod who stole the show keeping out of reach of the Knights to claim victory for the Bandits, his efforts could get him a call up to the Knights. Round one of Club Championships for the TQ’s got underway. Shane Robertson and Morgan

Frost took out the heats while Aleshia Hill took out the feature to lead the first-round points. The 30-lap street car race provided plenty of entertainment. Donaldson Civil had a challenge against the Downers crew providing half of the field, but it was former Tiger and Donaldson Director Wayne Russ that took the chequered flag. It was a busy night for track staff with all the carnage but the crowd were treated to some huge rollovers and a few close finishes that will be talked about for a long time yet.

Wanderers-Mot clinch dramatic win over the hill Staff Reporter Taylors Wanderers-Motueka came out on top by 11 runs in a thrilling cricket match over in Blenheim

tueka elected to bat. A steady effort ensued with the experienced Dave Leonard (43) and Alex Brogan (38) leading a collective battle. However, a steady stream of wickets lost throughout the innings halted any threatening partnerships that had formed. This culminated in Wanderers-Motueka being bowled out for 192, a target which seemed 30-40 light on a good deck. The second innings started slowly for Wanderers-Motueka as the Falcons’ opening pair got off to a flier and at 156/2 in the 37th over it seemed as if the Falcons would win in a canter with thoughts of a potential bonus point. However, the game changed in a crazy passage of play which saw Wanderers-Motueka raise their fielding levels to turn the game on its head. Matthew Stretch was to fall to Jackson Harris, who ended his spell with two for 26. At 158/4 however the target

was still very manageable. Wanderers-Motueka simply refused to lie down and with Harris picking up another, the game was definitely on. Andrew Beatson’s three for 25 and Logan Ogilvie, whose figures don’t display how well he bowled, entered the attack and provided great spells with both bowling tightly and aggressively to reduce the Falcons further. Ogilvie performing yet another direct hit run out off his own bowling to tighten the screws. From 156 for two, the Falcons slumped to 181 for nine when the same two bowlers aptly combined to secure the victory. Beatson having the Falcons number 11 caught off a leading edge to cover by Ogilvie. This was a fantastic team effort and showed huge character from such a young side. With two wins on the bounce the combined side go into next weekend with every con-

fidence that they can beat the other Marlborough side, the Dolphins. This game will be played in Memorial Park and will see premier cricket return to Motueka for the first time in five years. The Taylors Wanderers second grade side continued on their fine form also with another comfortable victory against Nelson College Blue. Nelson College batted first and led by Jack MacNeil’s fine 105, posted 267 for eight off their 40 overs. Nathan Della-Bosca was the pick of the Wanderers bowlers with three for 23 and their chase looked a little tight when they were 57 for three , but an excellent fourth wicket stand of 198 by Brett Morris (89) and Rupert Souch with 109 not out saw them home safely. This Friday night will also see the annual Carols in the Park conducted at Centennial Park, commencing at 5pm.

Opinion:

That Crusaders logo, that decision Jacob Page The response to the Crusaders’ new logo was largely negative, but the franchise was put in an impossible situation. Once they committed to reviewing their logo, which was initially media-driven after the March terrorist attack in Christchurch, change was always going to happen, it was just a case of how much. In my opinion, the new logo screams political correctness. The Crusaders PR machine tried to spin it as a mix between mountains, sea and culture and then tacked on a Maori translation for good measure. The problem is, the die-hard Crusaders fans could not be convinced that there was a need to change the logo or the name.

In a recent trip to Queenstown I purchased a 2019 Crusaders jersey and I intend to frame it. It’s my individual, passive protest in disagreement to the move away from the traditional logo.

Last week the Crusaders’ unveiled their new logo (bottom), after reviewing their old logo (above) and name following the Christchurch Terror Attacks earlier this The Crusaders will have a hard time convincing the moneypaying masses to buy their merchandise in the short-term - I know I will not. For the most part though, I have sympathy for the fran-

chise, my franchise. They did not ask for this tragedy to strike their city. They have had to change because of it, because of perceived public pressure. I would argue there has been little public pressure towards change and more moral pressure from those unlikely to watch a Crusaders game on a regular basis. The name and logo do not make a team, but there is no doubt that the fans do not feel listened to during the review. There was a feeling of inevitability about the change, and perhaps that will make it easier to accept in a shorter period of time. The product on the field must still be the priority. That product, and the success of it, combined with the one-eyed nature of their fans must continue to be the standard.

What do you love about your local parks? We’re reviewing the way we manage Moutere/Waimea Ward parks and reserves, and we need your help to make sure these public spaces suit locals and visitors now and in the future. Over the next few months, we’ll be asking you to tell us which reserves you use regularly, what you love about them, and any changes you would like to see to the way they are used or managed. The most important thing we want to know is: What’s your vision for their future? The way we manage them was last reviewed in 2000, so it’s time we update and refresh the management plan. This initial round of consultation will help us write a first draft of the management plan. There will be another opportunity to comment on the draft itself in the second half of 2020. Have your say Online: Visit tasman.govt.nz/feedback for more information. In writing: You are welcome to submit written comments and suggestions, either via email to anna.gerraty@tasman. govt.nz or post c/- Anna Gerraty, Strategic Policy Team, Tasman District Council, 189 Queen Street, Private Bag 4, Richmond Nelson, 7050.
