Matt McCrorie Richmond’s Community Patrol thanked the community for it’s continued support last week, presenting a gift of flowers to two of its long time sponsors. Community Patrol aims to help prevent crime and reduce harm through the active presence of patrollers in the community. Patrollers work closely with Police to be an extra set of eyes and ears. Community Patrols are organised and operated by their local communities and raise their annual operating expenses through local grants, sponsorship and donations. Each Patrol caters to the needs of its local community, Patrolling where and when best supports the local Police and the local community. Mike Gill, organiser for Community Patrol Richmond, said that they wanted to do something to recognise the value of their supporters. “We need support from the community.” Marie Nailer, from Shapers in Richmond who supports the community patrol, says that “It’s really just about giving back to the community.” Louise O’Donnell, from Community Patrol, says that fundraising is key to the Community Patrol’s success. “We do need to do a lot of fundraising, so the support from different organisations in the community is hugely helpful.” Joe Sims, from Knapp’s in Richmond, says that as a former police officer, he recognises the value of community patrol. “Having that extra set of eyes and a friendly face in the community is vital.” “All of our supports have been a great help,” says Mike Gill, and that the organisation couldn’t continue to operate in the region if it wasn’t for the support of the community. “We wanted to do something just to show our appreciation, their support is vital to us.” Mike says that anyone interested in finding out more, or that is interested in joining the Richmond Community Patrol can email recruitment@rdcp.org.nz

The Nelson region saw more than 85 motorcycles roll into town over the weekend as part of a national event for dozens of Triumph enthusiasts. The 9th AGM of the national Triumph Riders Motorcycle Club, which was hosted by the Nelson Chapter, saw all shapes and sizes of the motorcycles parked up – from older bikes to the latest “rockets”, according to New Zealand Vice President Chris Harvey. Chris says the event was a great success with 110 attendees from as far away as Northland and Alexandra coming to town to take part in the club’s AGM and show off their bikes. The riders went out to Tapawera and Moutere on their bikes, and then back into the city for a dinner and charity auction at Smugglers, in Tahunanui, which raised more than $3500 for St Johns. “Everyone had a great time. It all went very smoothly,” says Chris. He says that Triumph enthusiasts have a saying: “For the ride.” “We just love Triumphs,” Chirs says. “ We have a real mix of people in our club that numbers 400 nationally.” Chris says the members are now looking forward to next year where the club has its 10-year anniversary in Whanganui, where it was founded. Dam cost blows out by $25 million

Julia Twort: Good grief I know you are meant to have a bit in the contingency budget incase something unexpected happens but this is just a tad extreme. Who ever is working the budget and pricing things is letting things spiral out of control.

Bruce Miller: Just get on with it already, chuck another 50 million at it and make it bigger! God knows it will be needed before too long! Michelle Rutter: Bruce Miller yep... more procrastination and that amount will double!
