In New Zealand, Zonta Club of Wellington and UN Women Aotearoa have organised an event to celebrate International Women’s Day 2020 with speakers such as Hon Julie Ann Genter – Minister for Women, Tiana Epati – President of the New Zealand Law Society and Dr Lupe Taumoepeau – New Zealand’s first vascular surgeon. Other events will take place around the country on Sunday, March 8th including an opportunity for locals to hear 8 Nelson-Tasman CEOs or women working in non-traditional fields, tell their stories. Entitled ‘Feminist Fables: Smashing the Ceiling,’ those who attend the event will be supporting the wonderful work of the Nelson Women’s Centre. The speakers will include: Janine Dowding (CEO Tasman District Council, former head MSD Nelson), Gillian Wratt (Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust chair, former Head NZ Antarctic Programme, former CEO Cawthron Institute) and Georgie Moleta (butcher and businesswoman – Georgie Moleta Homekill Ltd). To find out more about the International Women’s Day gathering taking place at Founder’s Park this Sunday, visit the Nelson Women’s Centre’s Facebook page for more details. Local women’s networking ‘Your Tribe Collective’ is proudly supporting the event. “The Nelson Women’s Centre is our chosen charity for 2020,” says Tribe creator and Life Coach, Caron Proctor. “For us it’s about celebration, and sisterhood. It’s about creating a community that feels like family.” Caron’s coaching practise, Tribe and HERstory are her ‘roads to helping women smash through their own limiting beliefs, especially the ones picked up by societal pressures to conform.’ At Tribe, all members are given the opportunity to speak up, to share, to cheerlead. “Together we work on building, rather than competing. We have meetings, pow wows, wine, events and online connection. We have a lot of fun and we’re here for all women, not just women in business.” One of the benefits of belonging to a community of likeminded women is enabling deep connection. “Women understand women,” she says. “Your Tribe is a place for learning that we are all good enough; that to be equal means to learn how to stand up and speak up.” Caron says they’ve made joining Your Tribe ‘mega easy,’ with no contracts or pressure. “The cost is less than a weekly glass of wine.” On a final note, Caron says if you feel you aren’t being treated as an equal – “learn how to speak up, stop spectating, and start taking action – all change begins within.” Georgie Moleta, owner of Georgie Moleta Homekill Ltd will be just one of the local speakers on Sunday.
