He added the Hi Reach South Island Super Stock title on Saturday night at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway. He won it against a solid field of three former New Zealand champions and three-quarters of the Palmerston North Panthers team. A bit of help from Phil Krammer also helped after he held up former South Island title holder Jordan Dare in the final heat, gave Hill the points gap he needed. Constant rival, Brett Nicholls, was put in the infield after coming to grief with Trevor Lineham’s car in the final heat while tied on points with Hill. It was a just reward for the everimproving 95n driver. The championship attracted 18 cars from around the country, Rotorua, Hawkes Bay, Dunedin, Christchurch and Palmerston North all being represented. It was a good boost from the usual line-up with numbers dropping in the South Island. Wayne Hemi has won every trophy in the book except the South Island title, but his attempt ended early with steering issues in heat one. Regular visitor and former national champion, William Humphries struck trouble in heat two with a flat rear tyre ruining his chances. Malcolm Ngatai was the other former New Zealand champion competing but his points tally was only enough to claim third. Most of the drivers will be returning on Easter Friday for re-run of the Super Stock Stampede plus plenty more to end the season on a high note. Zoe Connolly picked up her first race win on her home track, while Jayden Corkill kept his feature win tally ticking over with another solid drive from the ever improving Raiden Hearne earning him second. Brett Steer and Wade Thorn won the club side-car championship after their final round of racing, while the Tasman Thunder were luckless at the New Zealand stock car teams title in Stratford. The brutal championship taking its toll on drivers and machinery. The event shifts to Wellington next year after the Capital team won the title. Former Waimea College student Jeremy Webb added to his impressive trophy haul with the North Island TQ title. He became the first driver to hold both North and South Island titles after the entry rules were changed this year. Nelson Sprint car driver Sam O’Callaghan picked up second place at the South Island sprint car title in Invercargill over the weekend, Nelson will see sprint cars return in March for a round of the Hydralink Series. Alex Hill on his way to winning the South Island Super stock title. Photo: Supplied. Hill wins South Island super stock title Jody Scott Speedway Reporter editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Sport Peter Gibbs The Banana Boat Ocean Swim Series is coming to Nelson on Saturday, with the Interislander Big Tahuna offering competition from the 3km main event down to 100m events for children. A feature of the swims is the optional inflatable obstacle course and slide made by Nelson company Aflex, which competitors can choose to use for a grand finish. The 3km swim starts on Tahuna Beach adjacent to Rocks Rd at 8am. Nelson swimmers had a final hit out last Sunday as they prepare for the arrival of the national series. Luke Kelly, last year’s Interislander Big Tahuna winner, already has a first and a second in Banana Boat races this season and he showed he’s ready to race in his home surf next weekend. The relentless winds of the past few weeks took a break this weekend, but the conditions in the 3.8km Ironman Challenge were still testing, as swimmers headed north from Tahuna Beach around markers in the harbour basin before tackling shallow waters around the south of Haulashore Island and heading back to the beach Along with Oxford Bayley and Hayden Squance, Kelly was in a group setting the early pace, with last year’s overall Banana Boat Series winner Sierra Thomas tucked behind holding fourth place. That’s the way they finished, with 56-year-old age grouper Hamish Neill next, ahead of other top age group swimmers Matt Hansen, Flossie Van Dyke, Angus Perham, Christina Harris and Ben Van Dyke. Many of the region’s top swimmers were occupied with pool competition, so didn’t compete in the 3.8km event. In last year’s Big Tahuna, Kelly, Fergus Drummond, Alec Swan and Bayley took the first four spots, with Squance in seventh, Abbey Smale (the first woman) in eighth and Thomas in ninth. That’s seven of the top ten. It doesn’t seem likely that Nelson swimmers can better that, although all seven of those swimmers will be there and looking to dominate. The region’s swimmers will be looking for medals in the age groups, Particularly with the like of Terry Bone (M45- 49), Hamish Neill (M55-59), Christina Harris (F55-59) and Derek Eaton (M75-79) in dominant form. The scene is set for some great racing next Saturday as swimmers from around the country try to knock the Nelson swimmers off their perch. Jacob Page Saxton Field will host the 57th annual National Evergreens Softball tournament on Friday and Saturday. More than 400 over-35 players will represent 16 provinces at the annual event which will see Saxton’s four softball diamonds in full use for two days. It is the biggest softball tournament held annually in New Zealand. Nelson president Alex Oliver says the tournament will see a number of former national representatives turn out for their provinces. “The standard of softball will be very high, and while it is a social affair, teams still want to win it. Southland won the event last year and Oliver said they along with Wairarapa and Wellington would be favourites again. He said the Nelson team would be competitive and would try to ride their luck.” The final will be at 4pm on Saturday. “It’s a big organisation I know myself I’m a coach of a team, manager of a team and president so it’s all go but it’ll be a great weekend.” Oliver says there are rules to avoid injury like no bunting and no stolen bases. “When you’ve got guys from 35 to 65-years-old it’s important. “I’ve been a pitcher all my life, been playing in this for as long as I can remember so it’s about playing some good softball and catching up with mates. “There’s a competitive edge but we’re all having a chuckle and a laugh at the same time.” Evergreens softball heading to Saxton Luke Kelly produced his trademark sprint up the beach to win the Clements Endurance Series Ironman Challenge. Please check your water restrictions At the time of printing, Phase B restrictions are in place for Richmond, Hope, Brightwater, Redwood Valley, EightyEight Valley, Dovedale and Māpua/Ruby Bay. This means you can’t fill or top up pools or water the lawn. You can still water the veggie garden but non-productive gardens must only be watered every second day, with a hand-held hose, timer system or bucket. If your address is an even number, water on even numbered days and likewise for odd days. While Phase A restrictions are in place in Wakefield and Tapawera. That means residents are not permitted to fill swimming pools, but they can be topped up. Watering grass and lawns is not allowed but as long as you use a hand-held hose you can still water your plants and veggie gardens and wash cars if it’s really needed. Various restrictions are also in place for water permit holders around the district. If any restrictions apply to you, we will have sent you a message letting you know what your current restrictions are. However, the situation can change quickly if we receive rain, so please check the website for the most up to date information, tasman.govt.nz/link/water-restrictions. Even if you aren’t currently affected by water restrictions, please conserve water as much as possible.
PUT A bowl in the sink when washing your VEGETABLES then reuse the water on your garden
Bateup Road repairs Work is underway to improve the quality of the driving surface on Bateup Road. The first stage involves levelling the low spots with asphalt, which will take a few weeks. Following that a chip seal will be applied. All work is expected to be complete by 30 April 2020. Thanks for your patience while we work to improve the road surface.
Upcoming maritime events Pursuant to provisions of the Navigation Safety Bylaw 2015, the Tasman District Council Harbourmaster has (or may soon) grant authorisations for the following events.
Event activity: Classic Boat Show Date and location: 7 & 8 March, Lake Rotoiti
Event activity: Sailing regatta Date and location: 14 & 15 March, Lake Rotoiti
More information about the Harbourmaster’s directions for events is available at tasman.govt.nz/link/maritime-events.
Speed Limits Bylaw 2016 Review Consultation We want our local roads to be safe. Making sure the speed limit is appropriate for the conditions is an important part of a safe roading network, so we have been reviewing the limits across Tasman District. In November 2019 we consulted on a Speed Limit Review, submissions identified that a different speed than what we had proposed was wanted for three roads (Gibbs Valley Road, Hoddy Road and Wharariki Road). Legally, we are not able to set a speed limit significantly different to what was proposed in the consultation, so those roads were withdrawn from that process and we are now asking for feedback on the newly proposed speed limits. • Gibbs Valley Road – current limit is 100kmph, proposed to change to 60kmph • Hoddy Road – current limit is 100kmph, proposed to change to 40kmph • Wharariki Road (Freeman Access to western end) – current limit is 100kmph, proposed to change to 60kmph We are also proposing to extend an existing 50km/h speed limit on Abel Tasman Drive in Pōhara 25m to tie in better with the new shared path location and increased activity by the café. This results in a proposed speed limit set 75m from Selwyn Street. Get all the details at your nearest Council office or library or on the website, tasman.govt.nz/feedback. Submissions are invited until 4.00pm on Monday 30 March 2020. Submissions should include your name, full contact details and should state if you wish to speak to the Council in support of your submission.

Calling all Kingsland Forest users! Consultation closes 6 March 2020. If you have been in the habit of walking the dog (or yourself), running, or riding in Kingsland Forest, we’d love to hear from you. Tasman District Council is proposing to gradually retire Kingsland Forest from commercial forestry as trees mature and are harvested over the next 20 years. We're thinking of replanting in a mix of native and permanent exotic trees, allowing us to progressively improve recreational tracks and facilities over time. We’d like to hear what the individuals who usually use the area think about this plan. Have your say: We want to know what you think of the draft Kingsland Forest Development Plan. More information is available online at tasman.govt.nz/ feedback, and at Council offices and libraries.
What do you love about your local parks? Consultation closes 31 March 2020. We’re reviewing the way we manage Moutere/Waimea Ward parks and reserves, and we need your help to make sure these public spaces suit locals and visitors now and in the future. Tell us which reserves you use regularly, what you love about them, and any changes you would like to see to the way they are used or managed.
