Building of Dam confirmed for region Council confirmed on Friday, November 30, the Waimea Community Dam will be built, with councillors voting 9-5 in favour of the project. The Tasman District Council (TDC) made its final decision

to green light the controversial build. They have stated it will be built to provide for the growing needs of the community, to safeguard the regional economy and to improve the health of the Waimea River.

Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne says, “this project will deliver a secure source of water for our community for the next 100 years. “It will greatly improve the health of the Waimea River, which can’t

sustain the demands we are making of it, at the moment. “The benefits of our region are immense and will be felt by everyone who chooses to make Tasman their home, for generations to come.”

Construction is due to begin in early 2019 and will be managed by the council-controlled organisation set up to run the project, Waimea Water Ltd.

Spread the joy Amy Russ Each year students from Garin College and St Paul’s School help to make Christmas time a special one as they work together to help provide food items for the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Hamper Appeal. St Vincent de Paul run the appeal with approximately 70 volunteers participating. Organiser Elizabeth Williams says, for her, the planning starts in the middle of the year, and the need gets bigger every year. “Last year we had in excess of 70 families in need. This year it will probably be over 80.” Garin student John-Paul Schryvers has been involved in similar projects for the past five years and loves the idea of the project. “I very much enjoy it. Baseballers receive new sign thanks to Designart’s generosity Emily Beaumont Despite pleas made through the Waimea Weekly and social media, the Nelson Baseball sign that was stolen from Champion Green on Thursday, November 15, was neither found nor returned. Although further information came to light about the vehicles and the people involved in the theft, the lack of registration plate details resulted in no further action taken.

But the publicity did have a positive response with Phil Guerin from Designart Signs in Richmond, who made the original sign, making contact with the club and offering to reprint the 2.4metre sign at no charge. “The Nelson Heat Baseball Club committee is so appreciative of his generosity. It is heart-warming to know that something so good and kind came out of this, and that at the end of the day communi-

ties do support each other and stick together,” says club president Tom Kroos. “They’re a sports group, so they need all the help they can get. We’re pretty happy to help out,” says Phil. The club says they’ve been inundated with messages of support from their baseball players and families, the general public, other volunteer organisations and their sponsors who support and value the work they do in the community.

FROM PAGE 1 Waimea Water is a joint venture between TDC and Waimea Irrigators Ltd. Chris Choat, TDC community relations manager, says some key reasons for the decision to proceed were that the council cannot meet its obligations to provide an urban water supply to homes and businesses in the region without water storage on the scale that the dam will provide. “Viable alternatives to the dam are more costly to ratepayers, they don’t provide the same security against droughts or provide for fu-

ture increases in demand, and they don’t meet the council’s legal obligations on Freshwater Management or on Urban Development Capacity under the National Policy Statement.” According to council, the dam is the only option that solves all the water-supply challenges facing the council and community in one piece of infrastructure. For that reason it is the only option that attracts a significant amount of co-funding from other sources ($64 million in direct funding and $18.7 million in concessional

ginning

loans) from irrigators, the Government and Nelson City Council. A concrete-faced wall is to be built in the Upper Lee Valley forming the dam. It will hold 13.4 million cubic metres of water and will store water from the upper reaches of the river. The dam operator will be able to release water for river health. The total project cost will be $105.8 million and is to be funded by TDC, Waimea Irrigators Ltd, Crown Irrigation Investments Ltd, NCC and a Freshwater Improvement Fund Grant.

Improved police phone service for Tasman Emily Beaumont The New Zealand Police constantly strive to improve their service to the public and now a new centralised telephone service for non-emergency calls is active in the Tasman District, as part of a rollout throughout all police districts. Calls to stations are now answered centrally by their staff at the Crime Reporting Line – as they continually aim to provide a more responsive service. Tasman District Commander Superintendent Mike Johnson says typical calls might be around seeking advice, wanting to inform the police of a historic crime, or reporting a civil or neighbourly dispute. If a call cannot be resolved

by the call taker, callers can be put through to a local staff member for their matter to be dealt with. Mike says, in emergencies, people should still dial 111. “We are further investing in improving our service delivery to people who wish to speak to us about non-emergency matters,” says Mike. Furthermore, a single non-emergency number, on track to be delivered next year, will give people a national number to get in contact with police about non-emergency matters. “We expect this to take some of the volume out of the 111 system and provide a better service to people who want to contact us but don’t need an emergency response,” says Mike.

Local group prepare to take over Hospice shop Emily Beaumont A group of 17 BNI (Business Network International), ‘Business Booster’ members are preparing to assist the Richmond Hospice shop staff on Saturday, December 8. “We’re really looking forward to working alongside the volunteers and helping to attract more people into the shop and just create more general awareness of what the shop has to of-

fer,” says Jo Hender, group leader. The team will be instore from 9.30am until 1.30pm with the BBQ cranked up serving sausage sizzles. There’ll be games for the kids, and an impressive silent auction. “The auction goods are looking really fantastic, there’s a real variety and such great things to bid on,” says Jo. “The Hospice is so awesome, so it’s nice to be able to help them out a little.”

Auction items include a pamper pack gift basket valued at $250, corporate seat basketball tickets, Richmond Mall vouchers, digital marketing and tree work. “It’s absolutely amazing that local businesses are helping the Hospice. We get a lot of support from local businesses in the form of donations but to actually get the physical labour in here is fantastic,” says store manager Anete Smith.

learning process for the students. “Every class has a collection box and every family is asked to bring something where possible. I think it teaches the children to be aware of other people and their situation. Sometimes everything isn’t always as it seems, and it is good for the students to learn that.” Elizabeth says they are overwhelmed by the response and support of the business community and would like to thank all of their sponsors and contributors.

Solar energy to power Brightwater treatment plant In a trial run by the Tasman District Council, 80 22kw solar panels will be used to power the Brightwater Treatment Plant. The addition of solar reduces the costs, a spokesperson for the council says, and increases the resilience of the service they offer. Council estimate the panels will save around $5000 in electricity costs per year once the initial installation outlay has been recouped in approximately 10 years. Battery storage will be added in the future to further increase the resilience of the water supply during emergencies such as natural disaster. “With batteries installed, the solar panels will reduce our reliance on generators during power outages. In time we will look at adding supplementary solar power to other council treatment plants.”

Road resurfacing to begin across the district The annual road resurfacing programme run by local council is now underway. Local contractor Downer will be undertaking the maintenance and will notify affected residents approximately one week prior, via letter, of work starting. A spokesperson for the council says most of the resurfacing done is chip seal and some will be asphalt. Total costing for the resurfacing is $2.1 million of which New Zealand Transport Authority fund half. Each year around eight percent of the districts 975km of sealed road, or 75 km’s, is resurfaced. The work is crucial to the long-term maintenance and safety of the roads.

Ballerinas set to perform Tchaikovsky Emily Beaumont Reporter

emily@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Richmond ballerina Georgia Norriss is set to take the stage next weekend as a member of the Ballet Arts company in their performance of Tchaikovsky that will also star Jacob Chown of the Royal NZ Ballet. “I’m so excited. I love performing and everything that goes with it,” says Georgia. A dancer for 11 years and a pupil of Louise Hawkes Academy of Ballet Arts for the last year, Georgia and her peers have performed at arts festivals all over New Zealand, consistently winning all championships entered in

ballet, including classes of pointe and variation, contemporary and also in jazz. Now, though, their focus is on the impending production of Tchaikovsky, an intimate portrait revealing the magic of Russian Ballet. It’s guaranteed to be a festive treat, with plenty of glamour and tutus. Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky is most celebrated for his ballets and forever changed the world of ballet with Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty. This original Ballet Arts production features magical music and enchating images. “Having Jacob Chown of the Royal NZ Ballet perform with us for his

Christmas hamper raffles to help children Amy Russ Reporter

amy@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Students from Waimea College, Briea Anderson, Sammy Daubney and Mackenzie Taylor, have decided to share their festive spirit and are raffling off two giant hampers to raise money to buy Christmas presents for patients who will be spending time in the Nelson Hospital Children’s Ward over the festive period. The project is part of an enrichment study the year 9 students are doing to help people in the community. Briea says it’s not just about people receiving gifts. “We wanted to help the community by donating Christmas presents to the Nelson Hospital Children’s Ward. “We will be buying a range of gifts for newborns through to 16 year olds. “And we have asked the hospital that the gifts be given out not just on Christmas day, but around the holiday season.” There are two baskets to be won, and 10 spot prizes, and the girls say the hampers are filled with restaurant vouchers, luxury foods, body products, activity

have received from everyone teachers, parents and businesses - has been amazing. “We wrote letters and emails and

called local businesses explaining what we were hoping to do and the response was awesome.” Briea’s mum Jo Stevens says the

girls have spent hours going around the local businesses asking for donations of items to include in the hampers “The raffle has been so well supported so far and the girls just keep on going! “Not only are these teenage girls doing an amzing thing, the support for this by the local community has been phenomenal!” Tickets are available through the school by emailing mstaylor@ waimea.school.nz. The raffle is to be drawn on December 12, by a staff member at the Nelson Hospital Children’s ward. Mackenzie says the winners will be notified through the contact details the girls have been provided with. Cost of the raffle is $2 for one ticket or $5 for three. The girls are all in agreement they enjoyed the whole learning process and that they would love to do it all over again next year. “It has been a bit stressful getting everything organised,” says Briea. “But it has all come together and it has been a great process for us. “I would never have imagined we would do all of this, and have achieved as much as we have, it has been a lot of fun. The outcome is a great thing.”

Community patrollers unite at roadshow Community patrollers from Nelson, Richmond and Motueka turned out for their roadshow on Saturday, November 3, held at The Hotel in Nelson. Community Patrollers are volunteers working closely with Police as extra “eyes and ears” to assist Police and other agencies. “The roadshows are a great way of bringing patrols together. We had a presentation by Chris Lawton, the chairman for Community Patrol NZ, on the new training module to train all patrollers so they can be competent when out volunteering as extra eyes and ears with the Police,” says Richmond District Community Patrol chairman, Marty Price. Other speakers included national operations manager Teena Cornes, who spoke on rural crime, and district commander Mike Johnson who spoke on the value of having community patrol in our communities. A number of local patrollers were presented with awards for the work they’ve done while on patrol. Our local community patrol is one of 162 nationwide manned by a dedicated team of more than 6,500 volunteers.

Students create cardboard arcades Emily Beaumont Richmond School joined the Caine’s Arcade bandwagon this term when 180 students, as part of their technology unit, designed their own arcade games. In 2011, 9-year-old American Caine Monroy spent his summer holidays building an elaborate DIY cardboard arcade in his father’s store in Los Angeles. Caine loved arcades and dreamed of the day of having lots of customers and, even after the entire summer with none, he didn’t give up. That all changed one day when a film maker became his first customer and decided to produce a short film which went on to become a global viral phenomenon, receiving more than a million hits in the first 24 hours. Since then children around the world have created arcade games from cardboard, unleashing their imaginative creativity. Richmond School’s Grant Irvine says it’s been such a positive experience for the students that they’ll be doing it again. “It really hooked the kids in at this time of year with high levels of engagement. They’ve gained some great new skills,” says Grant. The entire school’s students visited the hall to play the arcade games on offer, with many complaining when their time was up, wanting to stay and soak up the electric atmosphere in the hall.

Nelson Matters Political correctness gone mad is the only way to describe the nonsense of this year’s Nelson Santa Parade. Gone was the traditional Santa with his full white beard and red suit replaced by a Maori man wearing a red korowai, or cloak. The Santa Parade for me is about children and the joy and mystery of Christmas. I vividly remember as a young boy watching the mix of floats go past and the growing excitement of seeing the last float with the REAL SANTA. I have repeated the same experience with my own children. Sunday’s Santa Parade without Santa just

fell flat. The issue is not the ethnicity of our Santa. I do not care whether he is Maori, European, Indian, Chinese or Samoan. But to be Santa, he needs the traditional white beard and red suit. I found the justification for the Santa switch as annoying as the parade. We are told we need a Maori Santa in a cloak to reflect our biculturalism and multiculturalism. I welcome Nelson’s increased diversity but that is no reason to trash our own cultural traditions. The claim that a third of Nelson people were not born here is

hardly a good reason to dump our traditional Santa. The largest group of new Nelsonians is from other parts of New Zealand. The biggest group from overseas is 5,500 from the UK, as compared to 500 from Asia, and 400 from the Pacific. Nelson’s population is 85% European, 8% Maori, 4% Asian and 2% Pacific. Nor do I accept that Santa is just for Europeans. Some of the Facebook comments were even more over the top, claiming Santa was a symbol of British colonisation and domination. Why does everything have to be so political? Santa is

Showquest 2019 dates announced Creativity, performance, music and movement will be back on stage from May next year as students take part in the second year of Showquest, the Ministry of Education-backed performing arts event that will run in thirteen regions from Whangarei to Southland. Rockquest Promotions, which has 30 years of success with the country’s only live, nationwide school music contest, had a successful first year of Showquest, after winning the contract for an event to replace Stage Challenge in early May. Event Director Matt Ealand says Showquest is an opportunity for students to express themselves by drawing on their personal experiences and cultural heritage, and students from our region will be able to take the stage on May 10, 2019. “They design and direct their own performances, themed around ideas that are important to them,” he said. “This year we saw that students put a huge amount of thought into the themes they chose, coming up with powerful ideas such as the Maori Battalion, the impact of social media on teens, and plastic pollution in our oceans.” Ealand said Showquest had a wider focus than Smokefreerockquest and was relevant to more students. “Showquest is structured on a competitive framework, but the driving rationale, as with all the Rockquest Promotions’ events, is to encourage participation, creative growth and team work,” he says. “We find that if we are able to provide a platform where students can express themselves on their own terms within the boundaries of the event, the rewards go far beyond the rush of performing on the day.” Entries close on 1st March 2019, schools can either enter via the website: www. showquest.nz or by contacting Matt Ealand, Showquest event director on 09 845 1557 or matt@showquest.nz

ebrate our diversity of cultures. I love our Whakatu Marae, the greater profile we now give Waitangi Day and the increased focus on Maori culture in our schools. I love seeing the recognition of festivals like Matariki, the Chinese New Year and the celebration of Diwali. But this is no reason to radically change existing cultural traditions like the celebration of Christmas, New Year or Easter. My hope is that common sense will prevail next year and that Santa with his white beard and red suit is again the star attraction of our Christmas parade. Advt.

Retirement Villages: Dear Editor, Mr Choat has not responded to my request for his reason for claiming that the councils method, whereby retirement villages are charged only ONE Uniform Annual General Charge (UAGC), does not result in loss of revenue. I have now been advised that the mayor has instructed all staff to have no further discussions with me regarding this subject. Does this suggest to all ratepayers that the council has something to hide? Albie Aubrey Dear Editor, Thank you to several Tasman District Council (TDC) ratepayers who made contact regarding the way TDC apply the (UAGC) rate to retirement villages – grateful for your support. Thanks also the Waimea Weekly for such a wide coverage. To keep you informed, it is encouraging to note that councillors discussed this at their workshop meeting on 27.11.18 and will do so again on 05.12.18. Ratepayers will be aware that TDC raise their rating structure annually and strike a new rate for the following year, so I believe they do have the structure and ability to change the way they charge out the UAGC rate for the 2019/20 and future years. If elected councillors were to delay making a decision until the next ‘Long Term Plan’ in four years’ time this would

result in approximately a $400,000/$500,000 loss in rate revenue, and leave the decision making to a new elected council in 2019. Do readers think this is appropriate. JB Anderson At the time of printing a response is yet to be received from the Tasman District Council regarding these letters. Combined efforts for Wakefield Steam Park Fair Amy Russ Reporter

amy@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Higgins Heritage Park and Steam Museum will be hosting the annual Wakefield Craft Fair on January 2, 2019.

Evie-Joy South says the park offered the annual craft fair a ‘forever home’, for the community fund-raiser. “We needed to go bigger with a home for our event, with lots of parking to cope with the visitors. It is such a fantastic com-

bination, with the fair and the park, to happen on January 2. It will be really family-focused and very exciting for both the park and us.” Last year the event raised funds for the local mural and local li-

brary staff. “There will be an amazing variety of folks joining us on the day, for the market, and also what will be on offer from the Heritage Park and Steam Museum. It will be magic indeed.”

John Hurley, president of the Higgins Heritage Park and Steam Museum, says the event will be ‘very exciting indeed’. “All proceeds from the Fair Day will go back to the Wakefield Community.”

In the lead-up to Wakefield School’s recent 175th anniversary celebration, it built a new sign which has the words ‘E Tu Kahikatea’ inscribed on it, meaning ‘Stand like the Kahikatea Tree.’ The sign also refers to the date the school was established (1843), making it the oldest school in New Zealand.

School’s 175th celebrates strong community connections An extra special occasion took place early last month. Wakefield School celebrated 175 years of existence as the country’s oldest primary school, attracting large crowds over the course of the weekend. “We were celebrating a long history of our school, but what shone through was how deeply connected it is with our community,” says Wakefield School Principal, Peter Verstappen. “In terms of the learning, our children were involved in projects around the history and timeline of Wakefield School, and they put together an amazing, 30 metre-long timeline complete with models, dioramas and artwork; these told the history not just of Wakefield School but also of Wakefield Village, and then related it to things that were happening at the time.” Peter says, when the older folk

came back for the anniversary, the timeline was a strong point of connection between them and our current children. “Our student’s participation created a real sense of connection with their families, particularly their grandparents, and in some instances their greatgrandparents.” Meanwhile, Year 3 children kicked off a project after observing the recently-painted mural on the chemist shop in Wakefield Village. “They were fascinated by the elements such as the old steam train that used to run through here; this sparked off a massive inquiry about these things which had been part of the history of Wakefield School and its community. “We have children attending today who are 7th generation family members, so there’s real continuity; it was a celebration of this community and its history.”

Airport redevelopment enables regional growth There’s been widespread praise for the striking new terminal building at Nelson Airport, which was officially opened in early October, completing its first stage of redevelopment. The multi-million dollar terminal is modern, spacious and light, it features local timber and has stunning mountain and sea views. “It’s undoubtedly a beautiful building,” says Nelson Airport Chief Executive, Rob Evans. “We are excited to get the first stage finished; we’ve got another year to go; by then there’ll be a complete transformation. Every day we pinch ourselves when we walk in. It will arguably become an icon in New Zealand architecture and it’s a wonderful asset, but the wider story is that the whole region is growing up, and we are part of that story helping that growth; we want airlines to expand; we also want to help tourism; it’s an enabler for Nelson-Tasman to benefit from. It’s a great first and last impression; the timber, the views and so on. With so much going on around here, like Air New Zealand Regional Maintenance, the helicopters, and the flight schools, we are adding our shoulder to that wheel.” Rob says that when he first started at Nel-

son Airport Ltd in 2015 its infrastructure was quite dated and there had not been a lot of investment since 1974 when the terminal first opened. “Then Jetstar, Kiwi Regional , and Origin Air commenced flying and we had a flurry of activity which stressed our infrastructure, but also provided significant growth to a number of new ports as well as existing ones.” The terminal was built when passenger numbers were 20,000 and prior to the new airlines coming on board, there were around 750,000 passengers with Air New Zealand, so Nelson Airport was already really busy. The additional growth really stimulated the market and suddenly we were confronted with huge growth on the back of ageing infrastructure. So, we had to act pretty quickly and decided to seek proposals from architectural firms around the country. We were excited to see Studio Pacific Architecture talk about the natural light, local timbers and the LVL Nelson Pine story which they presented in compelling vision. We wanted a simple intuitive layout; an open space for optimal customer experience; they came into their own with the roof structure, the locally grown timber, and from an engineering perspective

Nelson Weekly Locally Owned and Operated

it’s really quite extraordinary.” Then came the decision whether to extend the existing terminal or demolish the old one and start over, and the Nelson Airport Board decided it was best to start from scratch. “So we went ahead with the full rebuild

which was put out to the construction market for tender. We agreed on a Naylor Love –Gibbons –Fulton Hogan partnership and the construction began in May 2017.The first stage is now completed at 60 percent of the total build; the depar-

ture lounge, some of the retail and café space, the boarding gates and the arrival area. “Currently we are using the arrival space as the check-in area. In the second stage we are building the new check-in and baggage, and what’s there now will become the arrival area. The carparking’s had a huge change; we’ve gone from having 580 parks to 1100 parks.” At the Stage A opening, Nelson MP Nick Smith said “the project is crucial for our growing tourism industry as well as for the convenience and comfort of Nelson travellers. The old terminal was built when annual passenger numbers were 20,000 a year compared to one million plus today, a growth by fifty fold. I commend the councils on backing the 30 million dollar investment and I am pleased to have played a role in securing cabinet approval under the last National government for the new $5 million dollar control tower. The two matching, coordinated buildings provide an attractive modern gateway to the region, and a much improved workplace for the air traffic controllers and ground staff.” For many local residents, the 1974 terminal building will be fondly remembered

Feature

for its quirky 70’s appeal. “During May 1974 the foundations of the new terminal building were poured. The new facilities sported orange-coloured panelling on the control tower and the lower levels of the terminal. The bright colour was repeated on the inside with more than 1000 square yards of ‘circus’ patterned carpet in orange, yellow, brown, gold and black colours. A few months after the new control tower opened at Nelson Airport, special glass in the windows was replaced due to multiple reflections in some panels.” (The Story of Nelson Aviation.) The book also states,“its additional proximity to the geographical centre of New Zealand, short flying time to the capital city and excellent weather, Nelson Airport has experienced continual growth of air traffic over more than seven decades.” This growth has deemed the new terminal building a necessary development and one which creates an exciting flightpath for our region’s future. The project is due to be completed in October 2019. For more information visit www.nelsonairport.co.nz

Recognising the need for a specialised equine centre in Nelson-Tasman, Eleena and her husband set up ‘The Classical Equestrian Art of New Zealand’ in Ruby Bay. “As a teenager I studied classical dressage and the biomechanics of the horse and the human,” says Eleena. I’ve had a lot of injuries myself over the years and have used horses for my own rehab.” Equine-assisted therapy is used to treat individuals with neurological disorders, movement disorders or balance problems; the horse’s rhythmical gait helps promotes strength, balance and coordination. Emily Beaumont Over two days last week around 150 Waimea College year-10 students were gaining invaluable hands-on experience at various businesses around the region. The “Workwatch” programme has been in place at the college for more than 10 years; every year students are offered the opportunity to spend a day in a work place of their choice. “It’s a really important part of what we do. By doing this it creates a career conversation with students and their whanau or caregivers,” says careers advisor Lyn Guilliard. “It allows the students to take ownership and use their initiative through self-management. All key employability skills.” Lyn says there’s keen interest in the trades along with hospitality, early childhood teaching, law and accountancy. For keen mountainbikers Joel Duncan and Jade Gordon, the workplace choice was easy. The boys spent their work day helping out at Richmond’s Avanti Plus, learning how to assemble bikes and mount and adjust brakes, among other skills. “Biking is just so fun and enjoyable,” says Jade. The boys say the Workwatch programme has been very beneficial to them and they’ve appreciated being given the opportunity to experience their desired career.

Zink, which is located on Champion Road, cleverly combines café and retail. “My husband Brendon and I have had the business for seven months now, after a lifestyle change prompted a new direction,” says Missy, Tamzin and Lee-Anne at Zink Cafe. co-owner Lee-Anne Bailey. “I take care of our café with Amber and Tammy, and do most of the cooking, while Brendon runs the other side with our manager Melissa, where people can view a range of Weber barbeques and indoor/outdoor heating options.” Zink’s retail arm works well next to its café, which offers wholesome, freshly-baked goods made on the premises daily. “We have amazing staff; the atmosphere is welcoming and really laidback, plus we have long trestle tables which are great for meetings!”

Members of the Top of the South Motorcycle Club kindly donated an $1800 cheque to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust last month. The club held their annual Daylight Savings Ride to raise funds for the trust. It was their sixth annual fund-raiser ride. Starting at the rescue helicopter base at Nelson Airport, the convoy cruised to Tapawera before heading to the Moutere and finishing with a beer at the Speights Ale House. From back left: AJ, secretary treasurer of Top of the South Motorcycle Club John Gray, Intensive Care paramedic Gary Tobin, road captain Tom Gray, crewman Carl Babe, Charlie Boyd, Noel Street, Dianna Cowling, vice-president Phil Lovegrove and Steve Barker. John would like to thank all the motorcycle clubs who participated in making it a memorable and respectful event. “Eighty-nine riders registered for the ride and the feedback regarding the event has been nothing but praise.” Photo: Amy Russ.

Nell Gwynn, written by Jessica Swalle, directed by Hugh Neill and presented by Wakefield Country Players, Friday, 23 November. I was lucky enough to attend the opening performance of Nell Gwynn staged in the Wakefield Village Hall tonight and what a performance it was. Full of tongue-incheek laughs with a parade of comedic performances from local talent, I was enthralled from beginning to end. On Friday night the audience enjoyed the company of characters from this extremely entertaining play. The Wakefield Country Players have transformed the Wakefield Village Hall with the foyer decorated in the theme of the production as well as clever use of stage space, never easy in a hall with no back-stage area directly behind. Nell Gwynn is a historical drama set in the 1660’s after the ascension

to the throne of Charles II. Nell is an orange hawker who is both quick-witted and beautiful. She is given the opportunity of performing on stage as an actress, something not considered suitable for women at the time. There were several standout performances, Lydia Dunne as Nell Gwynn showed diversity and engaged the audience throughout. Peter Verstappen as Kynaston gave a standout performance, and Jen Amosa as Nancy had us waiting with anticipation for her next comic appearance on stage. Julian Edmonds gave us a wonderful rendition of a sometimes inept Dryden, the playwright for the Company. The lighting and costumes are well considered for the production and Hugh Neill has once again given us a play that engages the audience from beginning to end. I would highly recommend Nell Gwynn to anyone who enjoys outstanding local theatre.

Waimea College students Chloe Robertson and Alana Bulmer took the initiative and organised a clean-up day at Rabbit Island as part of an Enrichment subject for their school. The girls cleaned up over 20 kgs of rubbish and say the most common pieces of litter were aluminium cans, plastic wrap and, more surprisingly, tea bags. According to environmental group, Project Jonah, it can take 200 - 500 years for one aluminium can to break down. 50 years for a styrofoam cup. “We needed to do something that was good for the environment, so we thought a clean-up at the beautiful Rabbit Island beach would be a good idea,” says Chloe. “It was really fun. It didn’t look like there was much rubbish at first glance but, once we started collecting it, it started adding up really quickly.” Chloe says West Meats, Pac n Save and Tasman District Council were very supportive and encouraging of the girls’ efforts. They managed to raise $50 which the girls have decided they will be donating to the SPCA. Each Year 9 student from Waimea College has to choose four enrichment classes to study throughout the year. Choices include; save our local environment, unleash your creativity, growing leaders and so much to give.

One of the world’s leading lightweight rowers, Zoe McBride, visited Waimea Intermediate earlier this term and was keen to share her tips on balancing sporting success and on-going education with local students. The 22-year-old who competes out of the Nelson Rowing Club was the region’s current Sports Person of the Year. During her speech to the Waimea students Zoe gave some sage advice. telling them, “do things that make you happy, you will achieve so much

more in life. Set the bar high for yourself, surround yourself with good people, and failure is not failure – it is learning. “Don’t be afraid to follow your dreams and don’t be afraid to challenge yourself.” Winner of four world titles, Zoe has been prominent on the international scene since 2012. With the backing and support of ASB, Zoe visited several local schools hoping to advise and inspire the regions youth. She says she was looking forward to the school talks. “I love to be involved and out and about, immersing myself with the younger generation,

Children from the Richmond Taekwondo Club had the opportunity to meet with members of the New Zealand Police on Thursday, November 29. Richmond police senior sergeant Mike Wardle and several of his officers surprised the kids with a visit to their Taekwondo class at Henley School. The group spoke to the children about keeping themselves safe, bullying, the job the police do in the community and the gear that the police wear and carry. Senior black belt and organiser Gavin Gallot says it was a fantastic opportunity for the students. “The police bought down two patrol cars and a booze bus for the kids to look inside. The police dog Tala and her handler, senior constable Mick Moorhouse, were a huge hit with the students. The talk for the kids started at the end of their normal taekwondo class at the school hall and the rest of the police and vehicles arrived later on.” Photo: Supplied.

Richmond-based players Steve Gray and Lindsey Guy were members of the Top of the South (TOPS) senior (over 60) team came very close to winning its grade, says Bridge Club president Ray Curnow, at the New Zealand inter-provincial bridge competition held recently in Auckland. Other team members were Maurice Carter and Jim Jessep from Blenheim. TOPS was leading the event, on November 25, after 11 rounds of play in the evening,

with three rounds remaining the following day. “Auckland-Northland gained on, and then overtook, TOPS in the first two of those matches to take a narrow lead. It came down to a “winner take all” encounter in the fourteenth and final match of the competition as the two leading contenders played each other.” “There were some big swings in the final match but the overall result favoured AucklandNorthland by a narrow margin. The open and women’s team both finished at the bottom of their grades. The Dougal McLean Trophy for the top province overall was won by Wellington for the third year in a row. boost tournament numbers. They received an invitation from South Pacific Sports Tours - a locally-run small business that plans and organizes sports teams to travel to Pacific Island destinations to compete against teams and schools that would not normally get the chance to host overseas teams.

Since their invitation the under-16 sevens team has fund-raised for nine months with food stalls, firewood sales, quiz nights and sausage sizzles to reach their target. As normal criteria for South Pacific Sports Tours, the team will leave their sports equipment as a donation to

their hosts and surrounding schools. “Each of the boys have trained and worked exceptionally hard for this trip, so they’re really looking forward to it,” says Ian Biggs of South Pacific Sports Tours. The annual trip will include an under-16 girl’s team for next year’s tournament.

The IHC Charity Shop South Island Street Stock title will be contested at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway this weekend. Local drivers will be keen to put up a fight against defending champion Rob McSherry. The Christchurch driver will have a challenge on his hands as locals will be keen to keep the trophy up here. The South Island title is an individual trophy but drivers will need their club mates to help block the opposition cars to win the title on the track. By the time the final race is about to happen, most drivers will know who the targets are and who needs defending. The Nelson Knights won the State of Origin last year but the biggest challenge will come from the Canterbury drivers. Current NZ GP champion Paul Leslie is coming along with former NZ Champion Dave McSherry. The Davies Brothers will join Ryan Musgrove, Bradley Evans, Rob Skurr and Shannon Marr as part of the local contingent keen to get their hands on the trophy. This is the first of the big meetings for the season with some heading up to Rotorua for the NZ title just after Christmas. There is a stock car team’s race between Tasman Thunder and Greymouth Grizzlies, plus club champs for Super Stocks and Stock cars. This will be the last meeting before Christmas. Racing starts Saturday evening at 6pm and gates open at 5pm.

Chris Sharland came from behind to win the annual Founders road run on Saturday. Veteran Tim Cross had led for the first half of the race before Chris took the lead on the first hill climb of the challenging course that went out on the Atawhai Cycleway and into the Atawhai Hills before returning to Founders via the cemetery and Walters Bluff. Chris finished in the 6.5km event in 25min 50secs, with Tim 34 seconds behind in second and Brendon Hughes third in 26.45. Rising star Katie Malthus was first woman, finishing eighth overall in 28.00, closely followed by Katie Morgan seven seconds back and Carys Coleman third in 30.13. The evergreen Fran Kerse was fourth in 33.34. Next Saturday’s road race starts from The Workshop in New St at 3.45pm and heads up the Maitai Valley. Meanwhile, last Wednesday’s Waimea Harrier 5km Eddyline Race followed the Estuary course, leaving the Richmond Aquatic Centre, heading down via the underpass, onto the Great Taste Trail for 2.5 kms and returning the same way. Competition remains fierce at the top of the field with seven runners breaking 20mins. However, for many competitors, while there is friendly rivalry, enjoyment comes from working out with a group of like-minded people, with a goal to better themselves each week.

A Grade Mixed Doubles is one of the most popular leagues in the competition, with strong and exciting play across all teams; however, Leanne Greep and the Richmond Rebels have made a sprint away from the group, with a nine point lead on their closest rivals. Another 11 weeks of play could see things change.
