Freedom camping site popular Matt McCrorie The new freedom camping site on Fittal Street, just off Beach Road, has been a huge success, says the Tasman District Council. A bylaw that was made effective from December 24 permits free-

dom campers to stay in the Fittal st car park. The council has set aside 17 spaces near the entrance to the Richmond Resource Recovery Centre for both self-contained and noncontained vehicles. Community relations manager

Chris Choat says the new initiative has been “hugely successful” and that the new freedom campsite has been busy all summer. There was a need for some permeant infrastructure, so a toilet block was put in, paid for by the government’s Tourism Infra-

structure Fund. A small rubbish bin was also added, but Chris says the council has already taken on feedback that a larger bin is needed. “We are now having the bin cleared a few times a day rather than just once, and we’re in the

process of putting in a larger bin to accommodate for the campsite.” The council are looking at ways to maintain the site as well as ensuring that cyclists and pedestrians using the surrounding walkways can continue undisturbed.

Shop’n’win a huge success Matt McCrorie Shop and Win has been won again by someone who has only put forward one entry. Even after being handed the cheque at Village Cycles Richmond, Lev Gimelfarb, originally from the Ukraine, couldn’t believe that he had won. “I only came in to buy a seat and brake pads, when one of the sales assistants suggested I enter. I thought they might have wanted my email for their database or something.” Originally and a long time ago from the Ukraine, he now lives and works in Nelson. “I don’t have the kiwi accent yet but I’m working on it” he said. Lev works as a software engineer, while his wife Masha runs a dance studio. When he was phoned by Waimea Weekly publisher Steve Page with the news that he had won, Lev thought it was a joke. “Even when

I hung up the phone, I thought it was a hoax. I’ve never won anything,” he says. Co-owner of Village Cycles, Andy Reid, was absolutely rapt. “Firstly, one of our customers won it which is fantastic, and secondly, as the winning store we get a free $1000 worth of advertising in our local paper! It’s a win win.” Steve says the promotion, now in its 12th year, has yet again proven to be a huge success and the biggest competition run in the area. “I would like to acknowledge all of the sponsors and shops as well as Richmond Mall and Richmond Unlimited for their support, as that enables the Shop and Win promotion to run throughout Richmond. This year has proven to be another huge success, with around 40,000 entries. Asked if it will run again next year, Steve replied “Why would you stop something this popular?”

Fire in Redwood Valley A fire broke out on Westdale Road in Redwood Valley at around 1.30pm on Monday. According to those who witnessed the fire, it was started by a weed eater hitting a rock, causing it to spark and set the dry grass ablaze. Smoke could be seen from the Coastal Highway, and members of the local community were quick to dose the fire with buckets of water from a nearby pond and fire extinguishers. It’s a timely reminder of just how dry the area is and how easily fires can start. There is currently a total fire ban across the Tasman region, with all Tasman District Councilowned forests closed due to the very high fire risk. These areas include Tunnicliff, Kingsland and the Richmond Hills. Rabbit Island’s internal and perimeter tracks are closed, as well as Rough Island, but Ken Beck Drive remains open to the public for beach access and the Great Taste Trail is also open.

Fire risk affects paragliders Frank Saxton The fire risk that has closed forests in the area has also affected the week-long New Zealand Paragliding Nationals that began on Saturday. About 80 flyers are taking part in the event, which due to the forest closures is restricted to three launch sites: Mt Murchison, the Barnicoat Range and off Takaka Hill. After a detailed briefing by the contest director Hamish Barker, launching began at 12.30pm on Saturday. By the start time of 1.30pm

there were 77 contest pilots all flying in an obliging thermal above Mount Murchison. It was a sight to behold seeing so many colourful flying fingernail shapes rising above the mountain top to about 1000 metres above. However, soon after the sky was all but empty, although it was possible to see some gliders finding lucky thermals ahead and staying high, while a few were soon low and looking for landing places. Meanwhile 18 four-wheeldrive vehicles made their way slowly back down the long

access road, out through the locked gate to Rait Road, and off to catch up with the scattered contestants Their destination was the finish at the Todd family farm airstrip in the Tutaki South Valley, about 63km away. Of the 77 competitors, 34 made a landing on the airstrip. The winner was Louis Tapper in the time of 1 hour 46 minutes. The 34th pilot, Simon Craddock, took almost four hours. It was a good start to a contest that is very much in the lap of the weather.

Library to Tasman water supply situation ‘serious’ celebrate The water restrictions are: Maori world • A cease take diIn recognition of Waitangi Day, Richmond Library is putting on a series of events throughout February that celebrate te ao Maori, the Maori world. Libraries manager Glennis Coote says, with Waitangi Day in February, it is a great time to recognise and celebrate the diversity of the Maori world. Keni-Duke Hetet, from Waka Group Architecture, will be at the library from 5.30pm to 6.30pm on February 12 to talk Aniseed Valley carver about cultural Timoti Moran will architecture and give a talk at the Richthe firm’s work on mond Library later Te Awhina marae this month. in Motueka. Then, at the same time on February 26, Nelson Provincial Museum’s new kaitiaki taonga Maori, Hamuera Robb, will talk about the museum’s Maori collection, before Aniseed Valley carver Timoti Moran rounds things off on March 3, again at the same time, with a talk about his pounamu carving practice. The events will be in Richmond Library’s Constance Barnicoat room and are free.

Water restrictions have shifted to Stage 3 and expanded across the Tasman district, as the dry weather conditions continue and water flows run very low. “Conditions are continuing to get worse with very low soil moisture, dropping river and groundwater levels and no meaningful rain in sight,” Tasman District Council’s Dry Weather Taskforce convener Dennis Bush-King says. “River water temperatures might be good for swimmers but not for fish and, with the heat, evapotranspiration levels are high.” Dennis says that the Waimea River at Appleby was at 820 l/sec last week, which is just above the new minimum flow of 800 l/sec. “Given these levels have been reached a lot earlier than in past years, and we are still only part way through the critical water demand period, the situation is serious and the council, growers and residents need to seriously consider what the likely position will be in two to four weeks’ time without any rain. Water conservation is essential but that may not be enough to avoid more drastic cuts, and even prohibitions against using water except un-

der strict conditions.” Dennis says that while the Kainui Dam was 80 per cent full, at the current rate of release (if continuous) into the Waiiti River, there is only about 25 days of supply left, so the council is bringing in restrictions to prolong the supply. A hosing prohibition is now in place in Richmond, Mapua – Ruby Bay, Hope, Brightwater and Wakefield, and Tapawera has now been added. Similar restrictions apply in the rural water supply schemes of 88 Valley, Redwood valley, and Dovedale. “Residents will have to use watering cans or buckets if they want to water their gardens – they will be surprised by how much water they can reuse from putting a bucket in the shower or catching water from the washing machine.” Washing cars and any unnecessary use of water should also not happen. We are asking businesses to think about how they can conserve water in their operations. Dennis says everybody can help by not using water if they don’t have to and where they do, to use it wisely. “This includes irrigating in the evening and at night when the water

doesn’t evaporate as fast, using water conservation measures in the home and place of work. Voluntary measures are always a great help at times like this.” “We have been involved in instances where overtakes and misuse of water have occurred and taken appropriate action. If we have to, people will receive infringement fines or more serious enforcement interventions, but we would prefer the community work together to get through what may be a very difficult water supply situation.” Dennis says that the Waimea Community Dam will avoid these restrictions in most years, noting that those water permit holders who elect not to be shareholders over the transition period of the dam being constructed would be under restrictions of 70 per cent reduction if the Waimea River drops to 800 l/sec at Appleby. Once the dam is complete non shareholders will have a 50 per cent restrictions at 2300 l/s (unmodified flow) at the Wairoa Gorge and will be required to cease take at 2050 l/sec, and will be prevented from using water until river flows return to more than 6000 litres per second.

rection continues in place for users in the Moutere Surface Water zone.

• Stage 3 restrictions, a cut of 50 per cent in permitted allocations, apply in the Upper Catchment, Reservoir, Waimea West, Delta, Upper Confined Aquifer, and Golden Hills zones. • Stage 2 restrictions, a 35 per cent cut, apply in the Lower Confined, Hope Gravels, and Motupiko zones. • Stage 1 restrictions, a 20 per cent cut in permitted allocations, apply in the Wangapeka, Tapawera, Glenrae, Wai-iti, and Wai-iti Dam Service zones, and continue in the Moutere western Groundwater zone.

Letter to the Editor Celebrate diversity through food

Washbourn Gardens is the place to be on Saturday if you’re interested in sampling food from some of the many Asian cultures that call the Tasman region home. The gardens is host to the annual Tasman Asian Night Food Fair, organised by the Nelson Multicultural Council. The free to enter event, which runs from 4pm to 9pm, will feature a variety of cultural performances and ethnic foods from about 20 vendors. If it’s wet, the fair will be held at the same time the following Saturday, February 16.

Dear Steve, I want to thank you so much for your generous support of me, giving me a new bike, which is really suitable for me to be able to deliver the Waimea Weekly each week as well as get about daily to do what I do in the community. It has been a real blessing having this new bike and has made delivering the paper so much easier. I have had lots of great feedback when people have seen me on it. I am really enjoying it and so appreciate your generosity. And also a big thank you to Village Cycles. I love it. Kindest regards Vicki Spiers

Area avoiding teacher shortage Matt McCrorie New Zealand is currently in the middle of what is being called a ‘dire teacher shortage,’ however the Tasman region is yet to feel the effects. In October last year, Education Minister Chris Hipkins announced an extra $10.5 million in funding, on top of the $29.5 million already announced in 2017. That included up to 230 grants of $10,000 for schools to get more teachers into classrooms. The government targeted more than 6000 overseas teachers towards the end of last year in a campaign to bring teachers in to help fill the shortage, with $5 million set aside for relocation grants and finders fees. The plan aimed to address a shortage of 650 primary school teachers and 200 secondary school teachers nationwide. The recruitment drive attracted more than 7000 applications, and just over 200 overseas teachers have been hired, with almost 1000 waiting to be interviewed. The Ministry of Education has expressed concerns about not having enough new teachers coming into the system to cope with the shortage.

The Ministry of Education is concerned there are not enough new teachers coming into the system to cope with a growing shortage in some parts of the country. Photo: Matt McCrorie Students beginning teacher training have gone down from 3590 in 2008 to 2790 in 2017. Getting teachers to stay in the profession has also been a problem. A survey of primary and early childhood education teachers found that 17 per cent of new teachers expect to leave the profession with five years of graduating. Teacher unions have linked the declining number of students coming into teaching and staying

in the profession to salaries not increasing. In 2001, teacher salaries were 25 per cent above the New Zealand median wage. By 2017 a teachers salary was 1 per cent below the medial wage. A survey by the the New Zealand Educational Institute, the primary teachers union, in 2018 found that the teacher shortage was felt more in lower decile schools, with just over 60 per cent of principals in the lowest three decile schools saying they did not have

the teachers that they needed. The survey showed that 90 per cent of primary and intermediate principals were unable to find relief teachers for when full-time teachers were away from school. The areas where there are the most vacancies are in Auckland and Wellington, where the cost of living has increased well beyond the average teacher salary. However, the Tasman region seems to be bucking the trend. Saint Pauls principal Maureen

Phillips, said for the last two years St Pauls increased its roll by adding a classroom of 30 students a year and taken on two additional teachers to help with that. Although the school had plenty of applications for a position it advertised earlier this year, Maureen said the number of applications had decreased since 2017. The high calibre of schools in the Tasman area was one reason why the district seemed to be avoiding the teacher shortage being felt in other parts of the country. “We really do get the best here because people want to live and work in this area, so you get a lot more applicants, and therefore the quality tends to be higher.” Richmond School principal Tim Brenton agreed. “We haven’t had many issues attracting high quality applicants, we are very fortunate to have very professional, multi-talented teachers.” And while there is also a national shortage of relief teachers, Brightwater School principal Gerald Baldwin says that is not a problem he has seen locally. “While we have no full-time teacher shortage in 2019. We also have plenty of relievers currently available for day-to-day and short-term work.”

Army band a festival feature While some of the best food and drink the region has to offer will be top of the bill at next weekend’s Nelson Food and Wine festival at Middle Earth vineyard in Brightwater, the day will also feature high quality entertainment. Spokesman Peter Glue says the organisers are particularly pleased to secure the New Zealand Army Band, something he says is a real coup. There will also be a dixie band, while oth-

er musical acts and entertainment includes a kapa haka group, Brooklyn Scott and Medicine Woman. Of course it’s the food and drink that people will be there for, and Peter says those at the festival will be able to choose between nine wineries, three breweries and two cider makers, along with non-alcoholic options like Pete’s Lemonade, to slake their thirst. Festival-goers will be spoilt for choice when it comes to food, with

most tastes well catered for. Children are not forgotten. Children under 12 get in free, and there will be a kids’ corner, along with plenty to keep them entertained. This year’s festival also includes a classic car display, while some of the speed boats in the area for the New Zealand championships at Lake Rotoiti will also be on display. Given the hot dry weather that the region has basked in

recently, extra shade will be provided. Peter says people can also bring their own gazebo, which they can put up at the back. He says if conditions get any drier the event may have to be made non-smoking. Money raised from the festival goes back to the community, with the main recipient this year being the Nelson Tasman Hospice. The Nelson Wine and Food Festival is on Sunday, February 17, from 11am to 5pm.

Terry calls time on delivery rounds colin@waimeaweekly.co.nz

After about 20 years delivering newspapers around Richmond, Terry Beach has decided to call it a day. Terry, who has become known by many during that time, first started after the Honda assembly plant in Nelson closed in 1998. That meant he lost his job, and, as his wife had just taken over a daily newspaper delivery contract at the time, Terry took on a round as he found other work hard to find. He has been a fixture on the streets of Richmond ever since. Not only has he helped co-ordinate the delivery team, he has personally delivered every run at some point, whether that has been short-term cover or taking longer term responsibility. “I know every street in the area, apart from some of the new ones,” he says, adding that he reckons he

lems with dogs guarding their territory. “No, animal-wise there’s not been any trouble. There was even one dog that carried the paper inside (to its owner).” The week before every Christmas was the best time to be delivering newspapers, Terry says. He gave out Christmas cards to some of the “old dears” on his rounds, while some people returned the favour with their own thank-yous, including boxes of chocolates. He says it’s the people he has met over the years that he will miss, rather than the job itself, now that he has retired from his day-to-day role. “I will miss chatting to people, especially the old folks who know when I’m going to show up. I have enjoyed having a yarn or a bit of a joke with them.” What he won’t miss is the 3am starts, although he is still around to deliver missed papers - at a much more respectable time of about 9am.

could pinpoint most letter boxes in Richmond. During his time on the job, Terry has seen plenty of changes. Early on, delivery boys and girls doing the daily newspaper run had a maximum of about 60 houses to cover in an afternoon, some a lot less. These days the paper comes out in the morning and the runs have got larger - one is up to just under 300 papers - so it’s now adults who do the job. Delivering has seen him on the streets in all types of weather. “The worst times are when it’s blowing a gale,” he says. “The rain is as good as gold really. “When it’s blowing you have to stop and make sure the paper is really in the letter box, otherwise it blows out.” He says some letter boxes are better than others. “Some only have a slot big enough for letters, not a paper. Tubes are the best of the lot.” He never had any prob-

Sarau festival a success Matt McCrorie The Moutere Hills Sarau festival and country market went off without a hitch last Sunday, celebrating the harvest season at Moutere Hills community centre. The weather was perfect and the festival attracted a crowd of more than 5000 visitors. There was food, music and crafts, as well as competitions for visitors to enter. Organiser Sam Lowe said that the most popular attraction this year was the music and two baby alpacas from Terra Nova. There were over 100 food and craft stalls for visitors to enjoy, as well as a book fair for the booklovers, which took record sales this year.

Acclaimed kiwi chef Reni Wereta, of Kiwi Kai, was there to cook up a storm, and inform and inspire festival goers. There were great performances by local musicians Bella Shand, BoAde Simpson, and headlining act Cameron and Co. “It was the first year for the silent auction which raised over $3000. We are so thankful to all the business who supported the 2019 Festival. “All the money raised will go back into the community supporting activities involving children, youth and community initiatives like the Kai Collective, who make healthy frozen meals to be distributed to people in the community who need it,” says Sam.

Ditch the car – go by bike Free breakfasts and coffees are being used as incentives for people to ditch cars and buses as a means of going to work or school next Wednesday and instead ride a bike. Go by Bike days are being held around the country this month and it’s the turn of Richmond, Motueka, Takaka and Nelson on February 13. Tasman District Council will

have a gazebo up in Sundial Square in Richmond, where those taking part can have breakfast and coffee while having their bikes checked by AvantiPlus from 7.30am to 9am. There will also be giveways and bike demonstrations. This year there’s a free ferry service from Mapua to Rabbit Island for those taking part to

help those from Mapua and beyond to travel to work by bike. It will leave at Mapua 7.15am and once riders reach Rabbit Island they will be able to ride to Richmond along the Great Taste Trail, a distance of about 15km. A ferry back to Mapua will leave Rabbit Island at 6pm. The day is part of the third annual Aotearoa Bike Challenge.

Now in its 5th year, the organisers of the upcoming Nelson Vintage Car Club Swap Meet and Bazaar say it’s an event which is growing and is continuously being fine-tuned. “These days it’s become more of a market-bazaar day because the show has expanded over the past five years,” says Nelson Vintage Car Club chairman, Jim Wareing. “When it was more of a ‘swap meet,’ people used to come along with old car, motorbike and truck parts which they swapped and traded between each other. Today, while the emphasis is still the same, there’s also a huge array of stalls including antique goods, bric-a-brac, old signs and records.” Taking place rain or shine, the organisers are expecting people from all over the South Island. FINAL WEEK!

Potato growing pays off for helicopter trust Colin Williscroft The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust is $1000 better off thanks to the potato-growing skills of a Richmond woman. Oakwoods resident Jill Holmwood won a nationwide potato-growing competition, run by retirement village operator Arvida Group. The prize for growing the most potatoes from a single plant in a pot was $1000, to be donated to a charity chosen by the winner. Jill’s potato crop weighed in at 1.89kg. Not only did she grow the most, she reckons they tasted pretty good too, with a little bit of butter and pepper. A handful of blood and bone was

her key to success, along with plenty of experience of growing potatoes when she was a child. She has always been a supporter of the rescue helicopter. Living in a retirement village did not stop her from making a contribution, Jill said. “Older people have so much to give. You don’t stop living just because you come here.” Helicopter trust general manager Paula Muddle gratefully accepted Jill’s generosity, saying every thousand dollars received added up to the one to two million it needed to operate. She was also pleased to hear those who took part in the competition had a lot of fun.

A strong sense of community spirit, generous sponsorship and enthusiasm for the Murchison A and P Show has kept the event going for decades, and it’s now in its 99th year! “It’s quite a milestone,” says Murchison A and P Show President, Allan James. “We are a motivated committee that is committed to making this one successful. The significance of the 100th show next year is that there are families whose predecessors were involved with the first one, and there will be

children and parents from successive generations who will participate in the 100th anniversary – our family will be one of those!” Allan jovially mentions that the show is bit of a ‘James’ set-up,’ now that I’m the President, my wife’s the secretary and my sister-in-law is the treasurer! It’s my first year in this role; the team I’ve got has worked very hard and with their efforts, we will have a very successful show. Because my wife, Irene, was the secretary last year, we’ve learned a

bit from that, and we’ll make this one even better!” It’s expected that the 99th Murchison A and P Show on February 16th will draw a similar sized crowd to previous years, which is “usually around 800 to 1000 people,” says Allan. “People come from all over the Top of the South – Nelson, Marlborough, the West Coast and also from Canterbury.” Allan says the locals also really look forward to show day. “We have an impressive line-up of trade sites this year with plenty

And unlike some regions, we are fortunate that the Murchison show doesn’t struggle to attract interest in the competitions; this year we’ve got a lot of entries in the produce side of things; the horse entries are the same as last year; the Registered Open Wood Chopping competition are always a real drawcard, attracting axe men from throughout the South Island and the shearers will get into action again, which is always popular too.” Meanwhile entries for the shed classes are looking good too this year with categories such as cooking, sewing, vegetables, flowers and photography. Children enjoy participating in the kid’s classes such as ‘Pet Rock,’ ‘Flowers in a Pottle,’ Decorated Cup Cake,’ ‘Miniature Garden,’ with interesting categories in the photography section too, including ‘People I Know’ and ‘Strange Things.’ People attending can also expect to see a range of agricultural displays and the popular pastoral competition and dairy cow competition, “which have been very well patronised over the years. In today’s world, these are judged away from the show. PGG Wrightson is sponsoring that and all the results will be available in their tent. The public will be able to see how that’s run and see who has got the best pasture and the best cows.” The band BmaJaR which play 50’s to ‘now’ music proved so

Greenacres ladies notch rare feat Colin Williscroft It’s been a pretty special time at Greenacres Golf Club recently, with three of its lady members registering holes in one in January. The first was Lynn Taylor, who achieved the rare feat on January 3. Lynn says she was extremely surprised to get a hole-in-one, given she is a nine-holer who has only been playing for a couple of years. The day she achieved her holein-one she was playing with her son, which provided a nice family touch. They were playing the 17th at the time, which has a green that slopes upwards. “I was watching it go up the green, thinking ‘it’s going to be quite close’,” she says. Then the ball disappeared, raising hopes that it had gone in, which when she got to the hole, she found it certainly had. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, she says, admitting she cannot remember too much of playing the final hole afterwards.

Greenacres Golf Club members, from left, Joyce Wast, Mary Eggers and Lynn Taylor are all smiles after they each hit a hole-in-one in January. Photo: Colin Williscroft. The second to achieve the golfers’ holy grail was Joyce Wast. Joyce had managed a hole-in-one once before but it was in a practice round at Motueka. This time, on January 19, was in competition, which made it all the more special. “It was great, really exciting,” she

says. Joyce was playing with two friends, just relaxing and enjoying each other’s company. When she hit the ball from the tee she thought it looked pretty good, pitching before the green and rolling on. “I thought ‘at least it’s on the

green’ and bent over to pick my tee up.” One of her playing partners suggested it might be better than that but she dared not hope too much. Then when they reached the hole and found that it had gone in “it was big hugs and yahoos”. Having been playing for 38 or 39

years, it was a very special moment, she says. One of those who congratulated her later was friend Mary Eggers. “She was just so excited for me.” A week later when she was out playing again she heard Mary yell out to her and wondered what the excitement was about. “I thought ‘I wonder what she wants?’ “It was just so exciting that she got one as well. It’s every golfer’s dream.” Mary says that she had hit a holein-one before but, like Joyce, that was in a practice round, so to achieve a ‘proper’ one was something special. “It was really exciting. I said to the guys I was playing with ‘God, that’s the straightest drive on here I’ve had for a long time’ and then it (the ball) disappeared.” Mary says she wondered then whether it had gone in and was very pleased to find it had. Club manager Stuart Anderson says holes in one, while they do occur, are quite rare and to have three so close together was something special for the club.

Near record numbers for sea swim Peter Gibbs After a string of second and third placings, Waimea’s Bendi Kepess won his first race of the season in a desperate sprint for the finish over series leader Luke Kelly in Thursday’s Port Nelson Sea Swim. The margin at the end was one second, with Bendi finishing in 18 minutes 10 seconds. The run of hot weather combined with the end of the school holidays produced a near-record turnout of 179 swimmers, the biggest in the past five years, with 51 taking on the short swim of about 500m, the remainder tackling a testing course of 1450m. The fierce competition at the front meant the field was spread across the course over the final leg from the ‘dolphin’ navigation marker to the Nelson Yacht Club ramp, with Alec Swan taking third in 18min 18sec, ahead of Fergus Drummond (18.27). Abbey Smale (18.34), was the first woman home, followed by Sierra Thomas (18.47) and Sophie Alexander (19.41). Sunday, where Nelson/Tasman swimmers showed the benefits of regular tough racing, scooping 15 medals, including eight golds. Used to swimming in 10-year age bands in Nelson, many swimmers found that while they were down in the age group ranking at home, they rated much higher in the five-year bands nationally. Ralph Hetzel was astonished to take the silver medal in M75-79 in Wellington behind fellow Nelson swimmer Derek Eaton, while Odette Llewellin was similarly surprised to be called up to receive bronze in F65-69. Other Nelson/Tasman swimmers to collect gold medals on a rough Wellington course, which was shortened to 2.5km, included Stuart Hebberd (M70-74), Ben Van Dyke (M65-69), Janis Crampton (F60-64), Hamish Neil (M55-59), Christina Harris (F5559), Terry Bone (M45-49), Luke Kelly (M20-24) and in the 500m race, Pauline Shoemack (F50-59). Luke, who won the Wellington race last year, had to be content with second overall this year of the close to 500 swimmers, while Hayden Squance was fourth overall, taking the silver in M20-24.

In last Thursday’s short swim, Brooke Swan continued her run of success, winning in 7min 50sec, ahead of Alexandra Grenfell (7.53), Lilly Hall (8.13), Hannah Hobbs (8.16), Jessica Gallagher (8.20) and Mia Langley (8.29). The season continued with the 2.8km Haulashore Circuit on Sunday, February 3. In that event, race three of the Clements Endurance Swim Series, Ben Marshall triumphed in a sprint finish from Terry Bone. With the younger swimmers taking part in pool competition, the way was clear for the more mature competitors to make their mark. After a summer of windy, rough swims, the early morning high tide start provided flat conditions with next to zero tidal flow for the 80 competitors. Marshall and Bone led the field for the entire course around Haulashore Island, but had trouble sighting the finish buoy in the morning sun. Both went slightly past the buoy, but quickly realised their mistake, Ben grabbing the advantage to take the win in 36 minutes 37 seconds, a five second advantage.

Bowling Club celebrates 100 years

Clubs from around the Nelson/Tasman region were represented at a tournament on Saturday that was part of the Richmond Bowling Club’s centenary. Photo: Colin Williscroft.

Nelson Matters Labour owes Nelson and New Zealand voters an apology over the failure of their flagship Kiwibuild policy. It has been a cynical political con on one of the most important issues facing New Zealand. The original Kiwibuild was for the Government to build 10,000 homes a year to be sold for $300,000 each for lower income first home buyers. Labour argued that the state could build houses far more quickly and less costly than any building company. The policy was scaled back just before the Election to 1000 homes in the first year, 5000 in the second, 10,000 in the third and 12,000 each for the next 7 years. This promise

MONEY OR THE BAG?

was repeated by Jacinda Ardern, Phil Twyford and local Labour candidates like Nelson’s Rachel Boyack endlessly and included in brochures to every Nelson household in 2017. The scale of Labour’s failure has been eye watering. Far from the 1000 Kiwibuild homes promised in the first year only 33 have been built. The private sector in the same year built 33,000. The average price of the Kiwibuild Homes has been $540,000 and not the $300,000 promised. The policy was changed to allow buyers to earn up to $180,000 a year and was also altered to let them pocket the profits from a short term resale. The homes

being built were not additional but just relabelled from existing developments. Nelson and Tasman has been particularly short-changed. Labour promised our region would get our share of Kiwibuild homes (proportionate to our population). That equates to 20 in the first year, 100 in the second and 200 in the third. None have been built or are under construction. Labours response to this mess has been to blame the officials they appointed to run Kiwibuild. The CEO is gone but is now suing the Government causing more costs for taxpayers. If a business promised 1000

The Richmond Bowling Club’s centenary held this past weekend was a great success, organisers say. Club spokeswoman Helen Guiney says more than 100 people attended the centennial dinner on Sunday night. Bowls New Zealand president Jeanette Sinclair was one of the evening’s special guests, and she presented the club with a plaque congratulating it on its 100 years. Also there was well-known Nelson bowls personality Allan Griffiths, who has been involved in the local bowls scene for more than 40 years. The evening’s guest speaker was Murray Sturgeon of Nelson Pine Industries, a company with a long history of supporting sport in

homes at $300,000 each and delivered 33 at $540,000, they would be done for fraud. The real answer to New Zealand’s housing challenges involves many actions and takes time. We need councils to free up land supply and put the infrastructure in so more sections are available. That’s what National did with the Special Housing Areas on sites like Richmond West, Nayland Rd in Stoke and Betts Carpark in the city where hundreds of homes are being built. We also need to streamline the building consent and resource process so it is more efficient. We need to attract more people to the building

the area, including bowls. The weekend’s celebrations began on Saturday with a tournament at the club’s greens on Lower Queen Street. Almost every club from the Nelson Bays area was represented and, fittingly enough, teams from Richmond finished first, second and third. Helen says the atmosphere at the tournament and the weekend overall was tremendous, with everyone enjoying the occasion. Monday was a club day, which again was well attended, with the greens full as well as a number of spectators there to watch. All the club’s members were given a special name badge as a momento of the centennial.

trades. We need more innovation and competition in building products. We need to partner with organisations like Abbeyfield, Nelson Tasman Housing Trust and Habitat for Humanity. We also need to expand programs like the Kiwisaver Homestart I initiated which gives grants of up to $20,000 for a home deposit that has helped over 1,500 people locally and 50,000 nationally get into home ownership. The lesson from Kiwibuild is for politicians to do their homework properly on policy. And the public need to be sceptical of those promising simplistic and instant solutions to complex problems. Advt.

Tiger cub continues family tradition Jody Scott

Speedway Reporter editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The name Russ has been part of the Nelson speedway scene for most of its 50 years and now there’s a new face coming through to continue the family tradition. Callum Russ is a third generation speedway driver who has followed his granddad Malcolm and dad Wayne into the sport. The plucky young 12-year-old is into his first full season of mini stock racing at Nelson speedway. He is sporting the Donaldson colours, the bright red chassis that became well known with Manawatu stock car champion Roydon Winstanley previously behind the wheel before it was handed over to Josh Nell, then his brother Brayden, to spin some laps. Callum’s granddad Malcolm has done it all over the years, a driver in the 1970 era, then Nelson Tigers manager, secretary and president as the years progressed.

These days the life member sits on the benches on turn three, busy watching and chatting away with old mates. As the racing has evolved over the years, the machinery has changed but the fundamentals haven’t, Malcolm reminds me. Wayne had three seasons racing for the Tigers in Palmy over the six years he raced. The first car he had was passed onto a young Brendon Higgins before he and Malcolm bought Sam Woodford’s Kuriger race car. They were the first father and son to become Nelson club champions. Callum is finding his feet in the grade. He has a few friends racing and with confidence growing, he is concentrating on improving lap times each meeting. They are looking at travelling a bit next season. A solid brush with the wall before Christmas means he now has the feel on steel on concrete. It hasn’t slowed him down and with plenty of sound advice from dad and granddad, it won’t be long before he gets his first chequered flag.

Callum Russ, centre, is following in the tyre tracks of granddad Malcolm, left, and dad Wayne.

Harriers complete Buller preparations

It was yet another hot sunny day for Saturday’s run, but that did not deter 60 runners and walkers from competing in the fast 6km course - a great last ‘blow out’ before the Buller Marathon and Half Marathon this Saturday. From the Cathedral steps, athletes ran to the top of Trafalgar Street, up the Brook Valley to Robinson Road and returned

down the other side of the valley back to the cathedral. Running very well at the moment is Chris Sharland, who once again led the field home in 22 minutes, three seconds, with Rob Lieffering in 2nd place 22.30. Taking out the woman’s section again, in a very commendable time of 23.44, was Klaatje van Schie, with Colette Read just 30 sec-

onds behind her in 24.19. The first walkers, Peter Hague, Alan West and Ian Courtenay, finished just seconds apart, in 42.16, 42.17 and 42.19 respectively, with Claire McKenzie close behind in 42.39mins. Athletes are now looking forward to the eight races in the Eddyline 5km Series, as they are great ‘sharpeners’ in their training programmes.
