Low chance of catching Covid locally A new Covid-19 case was confirmed in the Nelson region last week. A woman in her 30’s returned to New Zealand from the Cook Islands on March 26, and she was in New Zealand for 34 days before she tested positive. This was the first case confirmed in the Nelson Tasman region since 9 April. The woman, a New World Stoke employee, worked on three separate occasions in the store in a non-customer facing role before going into isolation. New World stoke have undertaken a deep clean of the store. So far, testing of close contacts with the woman, including fellow New World employees, have come back negative. Waimea Weekly understands that the woman’s husband was an employee at Brightwater Engineering, and that the premises there was temporarily closed. He was stood down for two weeks, while the rest of the staff have been tested at Brightwater Engineering, as well as staff at one of their client’s sites. These tests are all believed to have returned negative. The news of a new Covid-19 case in the region saw a spike in testing at the Tahuna testing centre.
The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board says that the case is still being investigated, but evidence suggests there is no community transmission in the region. This is beacause the woman was not working in a customer facing role, and wore a mask while at work. The negative testing of close contacts with the woman also means that community transmission of the virus in the region is unlikely. While the case is travel related, this does not necessarily mean that the case originated in the country of travel. Travel related cases may be caused by contact with someone who is infected on board a flight or at an airport. Director General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield says it was unlikely the woman caught Covid-19 in the Cook Islands, as there are no cases reported in the Cook Islands. He said it was likely the woman caught the virus in New Zealand. “Whether it happened in another setting during the period after that person arrived back, and so that’s more likely.” There are 23 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the Nelson region, with 5 probable cases.

Connings cautiously optimistic for future Jacob Page Connings Food Market’s Simon Conning is hopeful his store can make it through the Coronavirus pandemic. The family owned and run produce store at Appleby was initially forced to shut under the level four restrictions, but was deemed an essential business a fortnight later. While he was left scratching his head as to why his business was not able to open initially, he says much of his stock was able to be donated to Kai With Love or used in delivery boxes. “We are lucky to be open - I certainly wouldn’t want to be shut. “All the smaller suppliers we’re initially taken out of the market so there was 100 per cent consumption at 75 per cent supply. Simon says the issue was that food was still being produced at
a local level. “So places that were raising pigs for example and weren’t selling into the big supermarkets had nowhere to sell it. “It restricted supply while demand was still high and that squeezed prices up. Simon said while his shop was making the best of the situation he was not sure when things would get back to normal. “It’s getting back to a normal supply and demand level as smaller places open back up. “Sales are down but that’s probably because we can only get half the usual amount of people through the shop each day with the social distancing restrictions. “We’re pretty happy with the local support we have got so far,” he says. “It’s certainly enough to keep things ticking over at our shop.” Simon said he had concerns

Chlorine forever? Matt McCrorie Richmond’s water supply may soon be permanently chlorinated, after health concerns have been raised by central government. The Tasman District Council is planning to consult with the community about a proposal to permanently chlorinate five water supplies in the region that are not already permanently chlorinated, including Richmond. The council says that it has an obligation to provide safe drinking water to the community, and that central government legislation obligates council to meet that responsibility. Councils around New Zealand are now being held to higher standards around the quality of drinking water, due to contamination in 2016. One of the Government’s recommendations to councils was having permanent residual disinfection using chlorine, as part of a treatment approach. Richmond Ward Councillor Dana Wensley says that she supports the community consultation. “There’s nothing more important that we do as a council than deliver safe drinking water, it’s a primary job of council.” It can take at least 24 hours

Family steps up to help residents Susan Johnson When the announcement was made that the country was going into Level 4 lockdown Oakwoods Retirement Village went into a lockdown the Prime Minister would have been proud of. From the start, all entrances were locked bar one which is manned from 6am to 11pm, signing in all visitors and staff, and then night security take over to patrol the grounds until 6am. Visiting was banned and all essential visitors and staff to the site were temperature tested. Visitors, such as contractors, completed a health declaration. The three different areas of the village; the villas, catered apartments and the care facility, were isolated from each other and the village manager Andrew Morrison and catering manager moved in and remained on site for the entire first five weeks. Those residents who are in serviced apartment still have communal dining as the dining room is large enough for the residents to sit two metres apart. “Usually people like to sit in the same seat, but it’s been interesting to see a few residents mixing it up during the lockdown,” says Andrew. With the help of Gary Watson from Fresh Choice Richmond the residents in the villas have been able to maintain their isolation
Roger, Stille and Morten Paskins, have been on the front lines at Oakwoods Retirement Village since the country moved into alert level 4, with the whole family donning gloves and safety gear and helping keep the community safe, with Stille working as a clinical manager, and Roger and Morten helping with security. long weeks and extra training because they care about and want the best for the residents is fantastic.” Three members of one family work at Oakwoods. Stille Paskins is Clinical Manager and her husband Roger works as a carpenter/ test and tag and now security. Their son Morten should be in Denmark, but his trip had to be cancelled. “When my ticket was cancelled, I decided to take a job to fight the virus that got me stuck here in the first place and help keep the people at Oakwoods safe and happy,” says Morten. Sentiments echoed by village Manager Andrew. “Living on site for the five weeks has given me a different perceptive on the village, the openness and friendliness of this small community of ours. I knew it was there but to experience it was fantastic and I learnt what was important for residents and what wasn’t, and I hope to be a better manager for it.” Resident Mike Rodwell was certainly thankful for the sacrifice the staff made for the residents. “We were aware of what was happening in other retirement villages, and it was reassuring to have the manager on site 24 hours a day,” Mike says. “Although not being allowed out wasn’t nice, at least here we had the staff to keep our spirits up.”

Single vehicle collision in Richmond
A driver was treated for minor injuries after a single vehicle crash at Three Brothers Corner in Richmond last week. A police spokesperson said that emergency services were called to the accident at around 9:50pm on Thursday, April 30. The police spokesperson says that the incident was a single vehicle crash. “The driver collided with a roundabout.” “The driver was the only occupant of the car and was reported to have minor injuries.” One ambulance was on site at the crash, where the patient was assessed and treated. Firefighters were also called to the scene to assist.

School is looking a little bit different these days for students of Hope School, which currently has all of five students attending. Brody Matthews, 10 years old, was the first to arrive at school last Wednesday morning. “It was weird,” he says. A teacher met him at the gate outside, explained the social distancing rules to him, and took him to his classroom. While school may be quiet, the other students in Hope School’s bubble of seven say its nice to get out of the house. “It’s kind of boring, but it’s much better than being at home,” says 10 year old student Tillie Young, another 10 year

Nelson Matters
There needs to be greater openness from Government for New Zealand to get through this Covid-19 emergency united and able to recover from its global and economic impacts. It is good that New Zealand is doing better than most countries. People are making enormous sacrifices to contain the virus. This community spirit will be lost if people feel they are being misled or only given selective information. We know such secrecy compromised the response in Wuhan, China where Dr Li Wen Liang was admonished and jailed in January for disclosing early information on this deadly virus. Tragically, Dr Li died
of the virus on 7 February, aged 33. Nothing in New Zealand has been as bad. It is heathy and positive that different medical experts have been publicly debating management of the virus. The pity is the lack of transparency from Government. It was revealed last week that the Health Ministry advised the Government to close the border on 14 March. Cabinet rejected the advice. It would have been better to have first closed down the border rather than the country. The border was eventually closed but many Covid-19 cases including Nelson’s most recent, came into New Zealand during those crucial weeks in March.
The Prime Minister has repeatedly justified difficult decisions on the basis that the Government was following health official’s advice. We now know that is not true. The Government is entitled to overrule official’s advice but should do so openly. The advice from health, treasury and other officials on the Government’s decisions to raise or lower Alert Levels determine whether people can leave their home, go to work, attend school or open their business. This advice must be disclosed and not weeks or months later. There have been similar problems with information about contact tracing and testing of Covid-19.
old. The other four students agree. “It’s really quiet in the morning, which is weird, but as the day goes on it gets more fun.” Wednesday was the first day back at school, and things looked a little different “It was so quiet,” Tillie says. “We walked in and everybody was silent. I thought ‘this can’t be a classroom, classrooms are meant to be loud.’” “It was exciting to see the kids,” said teacher Katherine McFarland. With playground equipment banned, the teachers also have the task of keeping students busy at lunch time, such as big games of hide and seek. While there are only 5 students at school, they are still able to connect with students learning from home thanks to Zoom calls. “All the other kids want to come back to school and they think it’s really fun. It is fun, but it’s not like normal. It’s not like you get to play on the playground or anything,” says Tillie. The students at school are doing the same lessons that students learning from home are doing, but they do a few other activities to fill in the day. “We’ve been very creative with videoing, making dances, putting on a blog for the other kids to see,” says Katherine. The students at school are from all ages, meaning that they’re all learning at different levels. Hope School Principal Freya Hogarth says that it’s good to be back at school. “It’s really nice to be back,” Freya says. It’s a bit more productive for us as teachers to be back at school,” she says. F reya says that the juggle between supervising kids at school and keeping up with students who are learning from home has been difficult for teachers. “It’s been more time consuming for our teachers,” she says. “Even though they’re at home, they tend to be doing longer hours rather than shorter hours. Students are sending in work at all hours so teachers end up working around that.” Freya says the school is looking forward to having all the students back once the country moves up in alert levels.

544 Waimea Road, Nelson
I have had Nelson complaints over inadequate tracing. The media have reported the Ministry of Health taking 4 ½ weeks to follow up on people who had direct contact with others infected. These reports were rubbished by Government. We now know the Government had received a very critical report of its contact tracing system from experts that they chose to keep secret. The third problem area over disclosure has been over flu vaccinations. Dozens of Nelson doctors and patients have reported to me problems over access. The Medical Association has described it as a “debacle”. The Government refused
to release timely information until it became blindingly obvious that the doctors were correct. The other area where the public has been denied relevant information is the daily brief provided to Government by the Ministry of Health on Covid-19 since January. The public has a right to this information to know what the Government knew and when. Nobody is expecting perfect decisions in such trying circumstances. People are prepared to continue to make sacrifices for the community good and for the Government to wield enormous powers over their lives. But openness and transparency is crucial. Advt.

Recycling still on go-slow Matt McCrorie
While rubbish and recycling will continue to be collected as normal through during alert level 3, the Tasman District Council has confirmed that some recycling that is collected will continue to go to landfill rather than being recycled, due to the ongoing closure of the sorting facilities. Stormwater and Waste Management team leader, David Stephenson, says that glass is still able to be recycled as it is sent to a fully-automated facility in Auckland. Glass makes up approximately 50 per cent of recycling by weight. “There’s really no human contact needed with glass,” David says. However, local sorting facilities require human contact. “Although part of the process is automated, it still relies on staff to do quality control as well as picking out incorrectly recycled items.” Co-chair of the Nelson Tasman Climate Forum, Julie Nevin, thinks that this could spur people into rethinking the amount of waste they produce.
“Recycling is better than landfill, but only by degree,” she says. “Plastics, especially, are limited in how many times they can be recycled. It’s just delaying landfill. Maybe people will see their plastics going to landfill and realise we need more resilient and effective waste systems that keep our materials in use for longer.” While these are challenging times, Julie says she would love to see more local businesses considering the choices they offer their customers. “It would be great if retailers could help people to bring home less packaging,” she says. “If they have been thinking about [how] to help reduce our region’s waste, now would be an excellent time to put ideas into practice. All those materials - paper, plastic, glass - they all take energy to produce, especially new, but including to recycle. That energy produces greenhouse gas emissions.” According to the council, normal opening hours have resumed for most resource recovery centre, but with limited services.

WEDNESDAY 6 May 2020
The Smith family bubble Nick Smith MP Our family and millions worldwide will never forget this historic lockdown. Our bubble was made up of our two sons, Logan (a first year Otago uni student), Alex (who began college this year), my wife Linley and I. We missed our two daughters Hazel and Samantha who are also uni students but who stayed in Otago. We all yearn for family when the world goes to custard. We are fortunate to have a large enough home that we could sort territorial disputes by assigning a room each. The lounge became my office, Linley relocated her work computer to the spare bedroom, Logan took possession of the living room and Alex took over his absent sister’s room. We also instituted as Covid isolation plan in case any of us became unwell. We panicked on night three when Linley came down with a bad cough and temperature. We quarantined her upstairs. The boys and I washed and disinfected every corner of the house and I slept that night on the couch. She was fine the next morning. We later joked that it was a plot to get us boys cleaning!
Our family has kept sane with sports and card games. Linley and I got whipped in challenging our sons at football. We taught our youngest to play 500. My wife instituted flat rules for cooking where we took turnabout for our evening meals. Our son’s culinary skills soared. We will never forget our wedding anniversary dinner when our sons spoilt us with a three course candlelit dinner on our deck. We haven’t got the tab yet but expect that it will be expensive! My hair was so scruffy by week three I resorted to let Linley loose with the scissors. The Boris Johnson look would have been a better option in hindsight. Before lockdown we thought zoom was the sound of a fast car. We are now zoom experts. Everyday there are Zoom meetings for Linley’s
work, Parliamentary Select committees, school and business. Late in lockdown we even reverted to Zoom for social catch ups. The neighbourhood feeling is strange. The teddy bear displays gave a sense of community. The Anzac day dawn tributes bought us together. The difficulty is that shaking hands, sharing hugs and enjoying drinks and food together is so ingrained in our DNA. We are planning a good street party when allowed. An ironic aspect of this national health emergency is an improvement in my own health. Exercise has been one of the few lawful reasons to get out of the house and off your couch. I have taken up the Red Cross fund raising challenge “Stick to your bubble and not your couch” during Level 3 and run 71km this last week. The response has not been all complementary. My wife says I have pregnancy stretch marks to match hers. The best aspect of lockdown has been in bonding with our boys. The worst is knowing through my work the strains on other families that have lost jobs, businesses and many other hardships. We will need to work hard on caring for each other as we rebuild.
Damien O’Connor, Labour MP for West Coast-Tasman was given the same opportunity for a comment, but did not respond.

Got some news?
The fire ban that has been in place across the Tasman region was lifted last week, as the country has eased into Alert Level 3 restrictions. From last week, rural residents in the Tasman region can now apply for fire permits via www.checkitsalright.nz. However, if a new permit requires an inspection, this may not be possible under Alert Level 3 restrictions. Existing permits that were suspended in January will be reinstated, and permit holders will be notified. Several rural properties have been clearing plants and vegetation throughout Alert Level 4, and Nelson Tasman Emergency management says that lifting the ban will allow permit holders to burn vegetation in a controlled way. The ban was maintained throughout level 4 to ease the burden on firefighters. Nelson Tasman Civil Defence and Emergency Management imposed the ban on April 1, This was not because there was excessive fire danger, but to reduce the risk of firefighters coming into contact with each other and members of the community during the lockdown, Principal Rural Fire Officer Ian Reade is still asking people to be careful. “We appreciate that a large number of people have done a lot of gardening during the lockdown period, and some are wanting to burn this vegetation,” he says. Ian says that people should expect to see some smoke in rural areas throughout Tasman from people burning off vegetation, and that they shouldn’t be alarmed. He also encourages people to dispose of vegetation in other ways if they can safely during level 3.

Dogs still loved despite lockdown Susan Johnson The Tasman District Council (TDC) pound, which is owned and operated by John Griffiths, doesn’t sound like your average pound. When you ring the business, the office administrator, Nicky Jordan might interrupt the conversation to pick up a dog for a cuddle or yell ‘drop’ because Casper’s run off with the Covid sign again. Dogs that arrive at the TDC pound are very rarely put down and John is hoping that when owners lose their dog one of the places they will try first is the pound. “Most of the dogs are re-homed”, says John. John says that putting dogs down is the very last resort for the TDC pound, who make it a priority to rehome all the dogs that they can. “Only dogs classified as dangerous and dogs that have a history of biting are euthanised. Those dogs are notoriously difficult to re-home and we must satisfy ourselves and the TDC that the public are safe. Sadly, in some cases we can’t give that guarantee.” And they don’t give up on a dog. A long-time-resident, Shyboy, has been there a few years. The passionate staff didn’t have the heart to euthanise the timid,

Photo: Susan Johnson. frightened dog and have worked on giving him confidence, to the point where he can now be walked on a lead and accept pats from them. When the country went into lockdown, the pound fostered as many dogs as possible with the help of generous people in the community and Spring Grove Kennels. The Vet Centre in Richmond
maintained essential vaccinations and de-sexing during this time as well. Those dogs that had to stay in the pound, with its under floor heating, had two meals a day and regular exercise by volunteers Deb and Mick Walker. Deb and Mick also find forever homes for the dogs, inspect those homes, and Mick will even help the new owners with fencing and
gates where necessary to keep the dogs safe. “We couldn’t manage without them,” says John. “They care for the dogs so well that they sometimes don’t want to leave. We had one case, her name was Missy, when we had taken the other dogs for a walk and Missy jumped two 8 feet fences, taken herself off for a walk and then came back and was sitting waiting at the gate.”
If you would like to donate dog treats or food the office is open from Monday to Friday, 8am to 12pm. The shelter also provides microchipping which will re-commence once Alert Level 2 is reached. It’s done on Friday mornings between 9 and 10am, at 121 Beach Road, Richmond. Call first for an appointment, ph: 03 543 7012. Strict hygiene rules will still apply.

Over $16,000 of emergency aid has been provided to locals throughout Nelson and Tasman who have faced financial hardship due to Covid-19, thanks to a new programme that was set up by the Fifeshire Foundation last month. The Fifeshire Foundation, a charitable trust set up in 1993, aims to raise money locally to support people in need during crisis or hardship. Following the move to Alert Level 4, the foundation created an emergency programme to provide aid for families in the region who had been affected by lockdown restrictions, by providing money essential needs, food, firewood, and power. Chair Don Everitt says the trustees were prepared to step
in quickly, given how difficult the complete lockdown was expected to be for people struggling to cope with financial concerns due to the crisis. “We are familiar with helping in a crisis, and so the Covid-19 pandemic was something we wanted to gear up for quickly,” Don says. “Not only did our staff prepare an application and a process within days, we have been incredibly blessed to have some of our most dedicated contributors raise their hands to help out.” Applicants for the emergency programme need to demonstrate they have been put into hardship or domestic crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic. A streamlined application is
available online or on paper, and trustees review the applications at least weekly. In April, the foundation set up distributed aid to 37 applicants. If an application does not meet the Covid-19-specific criteria, it will be considered through the foundation’s normal application process. “We’ve been a bit busy getting the emergency programme underway, and in the meantime new donors to our organisation have found us and made contributions in addition to our regular supporters, which is really rewarding,” Don says. “We haven’t had to ask people to help out, they’ve done it all on their own, which is really rewarding. We have a tremendously caring community.”
Pastor says ‘life has changed’ Jono Martin Pastor, Richmond New Life Church Phrases like “Who’s in your bubble?”, “Covid-19” and “social distancing” were unheard of only 6 weeks or so ago. Life has changed radically not just for us but for so many around the nations as the impact of Corona virus rocked our world. In a short few weeks once crowded cafes, churches, schools and public places have become deserted, quiet, avoided spaces. It is only in this past week as we have changed to Level 3 lockdown that we begin to see some light at the end of the tunnel. The daily news reports remind us that life as we once knew it has changed. Forever. The financial impact and resulting fallout for many businesses means that the landscape in cities, rural towns and beyond will potentially shift and change radically as businesses close and as unemployment
hits highs we have not seen for decades. Regardless of what you may be facing I want to encourage you that God loves you and is for you. He is available to you in the good times and the tough times of life. He made a way through his Son Jesus Christ for each one of us to be reconciled with him. In this season why don’t you cry out to Jesus and ask Him to help you, to lead you, to guide you. A relationship with God through Jesus does not insulate us from difficulty, but it does offer us a hope that can be found no where else. There are many fantastic churches in our area. Life for them has radically changed too. Most at the moment are offering online services and support, streamed on facebook, youtube or zoom. Each Sunday amidst other things they are teaching
and encouraging about how to find hope at times like this and they are exploring difficult topics like “Why does God allow evil in the world?”. Churches provide great support and encouragement networks. With really good programmes and input for children, teens and adults you can find a community there where you find acceptance, friendship, the challenge to grow personally and an amazing opportunity to grow in your relationship with God through Jesus Christ. This is a great time to for you to “safely” check out church. Why don’t you jump online this Sunday and check out what’s on offer at a church near you.? -Flick them a note, send them an email or message them -They would love to connect with you and be a help and support to you and your family.

OpiniOn:
Make local travel a priority Nikky Lohmann We live in a stunning part of the South Island. Blessed with golden beaches, accessible mountains, deep lakes, flowing rivers and plenty of sun, Nelson is a holidaying heaven. There are the obvious delights, like Kaiteriteri, Tahunanui beach, Rabbit Island, Ruby Bay and the Mapua Wharf complex that rarely need endorsement. Abel Tasman is hugely popular, but have you boated into Anchorage or Awaroa? The water-taxi ride takes you to remote golden
beaches fringed with lush green bush and sparkling clear water. There are many options for day walks and kayaking within the park. Highlights include the abundant birdlife brought alive by project Janzoon and the beach New Zealanders bought after a national crowd-funding campaign. Walking to the Nelson lighthouse along the natural wonder that is our iconic Boulder Bank is a must do! Yes, the walking is hard, rocky and often it is windy, but the only way to experience this glorious piece of natural architecture is
at ground zero. Don a good pair of boots and pack a cut lunch to make a day of it. Taking a tour of the Ngarua Caves at the top of Takaka Hill is an otherworldly experience. Not at all confined or claustrophobic, the caves are more like giant, majestic cathedrals from a fantastical Tolkien novel, filled with stalagmites and stalactites that seem older than life itself. They fill the caves beyond anything you’ve ever imagined. It’s a treat that all ages, or closet geologists like myself, will love. The Brook Waimarama Sanctu-

ary is the largest fenced sanctuary in the South Island. If you haven’t visited before, the sheer size and scale of the pestproof fence is staggering, and the prolific birdlife and birdsong is surely a measure of its success alone. All along the fence the sound of Tui, Bellbird, Robin, Tomtit, Fantail, and more will blow you away. The sanctuary is a magnificent local assets. The recently-opened Spooners tunnel provides a throughlink for the national cycleway between Belgrove and Kohatu.
From the northern carpark it’s 4.5km of gradual uphill trail to the tunnel entrance plus another 1.4km through the eerily quiet, dark, damp and cold tunnel itself. Built by two 15-man teams with pick and shovels, it’s the longest tunnel open to the public in the Southern Hemisphere. Whether you bike or hike, it’s a great experience for all ages. When lockdown levels subside, get out and support our local business and tourist ventures. Whether it’s a coffee, ride or tour, every dollar counts towards our local economy.

Richmond’s first mayor - a formidable man Tourism Dianne Scott The story of Richmond’s first mayor begins in Weymouth, Dorset. George Talbot was baptized on 15 June 1834, son of Richard Talbot, a mariner and Sarah. He was one of 6 children. By 1851, at 16 years of age, George was a servant in the employ of Catherine Hodden, a draper. Also living in the house was Jane Cox, Catherine’s sister, aged 22. In 1857, George married Frances Jane Cox. Soon after, the pair migrated to New Zealand on the barque Cresswell, arriving in Nelson on the 8th February 1858, after a long voyage of 111 days. Their first child, Amelia, was born the same year, so Frances must have made the voyage to New Zealand whilst carrying Amelia. The pair went on to have another 8 children. In 1859, George is shown on the jury lists for Nelson and remained there for many years. The 1870’s show him in business with Joseph Clarke and

It is the public men of the stamp of Mr George Talbot who, by the selfless devotion of their youth and manhood to local public affairs, have made the Australasian colonies what they are.” In 1907 George and Frances celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a garden party in Dorset Place, Richmond, where they were now living. The party was attended by a number of dignitaries who presented them with a handsome silver tea and coffee service. Frances died 3 weeks later, a victim of the flu epidemic. George died 5 February 1911. As well as farming, his role as mayor, being a Justice of the Peace and Superintendent of a Sunday school for 38 years, George also served with many local organisations over a number of years from the time he arrived in the area until his death.
industry calls on locals Nelson is planning its economic recovery in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and the tourism industry is calling on locals to help. Visitor destination manager at the Nelson Regional Development Agency, Gisela Purcell, says while people are itching to leave their houses, they don’t have to leave their home to have extraordinary experiences. Gisela says they want Nelsonians exploring the region once lockdown is lifted and supporting local businesses. Though it is in hibernation at the moment, Gisela says the tourism industry will be revived. Her and her team at the NRDA are writing a destination management plan for the restart and recovery of the visitor sector. She says the purpose of the survey is to take the pulse of the community and find out what activities people want to do in the region. She says visitors have loved coming to the Nelson Tasman region but right now the whole tourism industry has come to a sudden stop. The hope is that Nelsonians will help stimulate the local economy. “We would love to see people just have a weekend away in Golden Bay, Mapua or Murchison, there are so many places you can visit or a weekend but stay in the region.” All who complete the survey will go into the draw to win a hamper of local goods. “We want the industry to be something locals are proud of.” To fill out the survey go to www.surveymonkey. com/r/visitnelsontasman

s w e N g n i h s Fi What dreams are made of Gareth Nicholson Paddling out across the backline, the ocean was like glass. It was just light enough to see birds in every direction and calm enough to hear gannets slapping the water’s surface from miles away. Everyone was out to play that morning. Seals were rolling around amongst the rocks, a small pod of dolphins joined my paddle for a while, and I managed a couple of nice kahawai on the troll. All before getting to my first spot! Arriving at my favourite spot, I didn’t think that things could get much better than this. I threw the anchor off the kayak with a juicy burley bomb attached and got a trail of pilchard cutlets going for good measure, before dropping down the first bait. What followed could only be described as ridiculous! I landed a good size snapper, followed by another, and anoth-
er, a big kahawai, small kingfish, another snapper. It was simply chaos. Having a couple 3-4kg snapper in the box already, it was time to go big. I rigged up the biggest circle hook I had with a fillet of kahawai that only a monster could swallow and watched it drift slowly into the depths. About halfway down, the line stopped and headed away from the kayak at speed. Giving it an eternity to swallow, I tightened up and ON DAD! The reel started screaming, this was the fish I’d been waiting for. After 15 minutes or so, she started to tire. I looked over the side to see a massive red-silver flank. My heart began pounding even faster, 20 lb? 30 lb? Then out of nowhere, I felt a nudge in the back and heard a voice – wake up now! Want some coffee, you egg? Back to reality, just another lockdown daydream. Hang in there, we’ll be amongst it soon enough!

NMIT chief heads to Melbourne Uni Charles Anderson The chief executive of Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology Ltd has announced his resignation after two years in the role. Liam Sloan has accepted a role at Federation University, Melbourne, as chief executive technical and further education (TAFE) and pro vicechancellor, education and training. His last day with NMIT will be on 28 August. The resignation comes amid uncertainty for the institute as travel bans affect its international enrolments which are worth more than $1 million in fees. Liam had been updating students via online videos. The government also last month created the the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology, which merged all 16 of the country’s institutes of technology and polytechs into one national body. Confirming the official name and location of the national body’s headquarters has been postponed due to the effect of coronavirus, but the chief executives of each of the 16 organisations will remain in place. Nelson MP Nick Smith had called the move a “body blow” for the Nelson and Tasman regions. However, chair of the NMIT board, Daryl Wehner, has said

Throughout the Reform of Vocational Education (RoVE) process, Liam presented the NMIT case strongly and he consistently positioned our Institute as a leader in the sector,” Daryl says. “Liam also pursued, and concluded, a number of partner-

Hunting takes step in right direction The New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association is continuing to urge hunters to stick to the rules during level three restrictions so they can be eased as soon as possible. Under Level 3, hunting and some other outdoor recreation will be permitted, although with tight rules around what is allowed. Those include only allowing hunting on private land within your own immediate region and bubble, and with the landowner’s permission. Overnight trips are not allowed and hunting must be on foot. Helicopters, quad bikes and other motorised vehicles are not permitted. NZDA national president Trevor Chappell says it is a step in the right direction. “Relaxing the rules on hunting is the result of a concerted effort by hunting organisations like the NZDA, Game Animal Council and Fish & Game to convince authorities that hunting is safe and should be permitted,” Mr Chappell
says. “While we are disappointed that public conservation land, which the majority of hunters use, is still out of bounds, allowing hunting on private land is a good start. Mr Chappell says for many hunting is more than just a
hobby and is actually a way of life. ”The reality is that for many people, hunting puts food on the table and at least under Level 3, they can start hunting again and feed their families. “The Prime Minister says normal hunting will resume un-
der level two, so if everyone does their part and follows the rules, then the quicker we can end Level 3 and enjoy better hunting opportunities.” Mr Chappell said it was a positive move to see Prime Minister Jacinda Arden acknowledge the role hunting has in
the fabric of New Zealand. “This is the first time in decades that a Prime Minister has stood up and told the nation that hunting is an important and legitimate part of New Zealand life. ”We appreciate that and thank her for it.”
Remember how often over the last few years you approached a local business to help your club, school or charity? And in most cases they supported you time and time again.

Tasman boss hopes for rugby return in 2020 Tasman Rugby Union chief executive Tony Lewis is confident community and NPC rugby will be played in 2020. Although all sport in New Zealand has been locked down for over a month, with a at least two more weeks of level three constraint, the Tasman boss says indications, at this stage anyway, point to the possibility of play resuming within the next few months. Early in the piece Tasman announced that all representative rugby, including the Red Devils, Griffins and Tasman B and under-19 programmes, were cancelled. However rugby at junior, age group, school and senior club levels was very much on the cards. “We are extremely positive that there will be community rugby this year,” said Tony. “We would like to think that the senior club competition could start sometime in June … and that age group and JAB would start in term three [which begins on July 20], but we are governed
by exactly what the Government tells us to do. “Looking at what has been happening over the last three or four weeks we think that could be a possibility.” Tony said Tasman had received no indication from NZ Rugby as to starting times, the local union merely monitoring proceedings carefully. “We have just been watching carefully, communicating with our clubs where we sit and trying to work out what is best for this region. “From our perspective it is highly unlikely that there is going to be any sport in schools in term two … it just doesn’t seem possible. So we are looking at and planning, with fingers crossed, seeing JAB and age group rugby back in term three.” Tony said Tasman were working with schools and clubs to come up with a workable competition and team structure for when lower grade rugby resumed, but said nothing had been decided yet. The union were taking a “fluid ap-
Cup and Farah Palmer Cup level in 2020, deciding to concentrate on JAB, age group and club play. “Community rugby was our focus,” emphasised Tony, “and the Mitre 10 and Farah Palmer Cup [competitions] would take place when the levels had been lifted. We are always confident that there will be some play in those competitions, in some format, at some time this year.” As with most businesses, the biggest issue for Tasman is a drop in revenue. Television rights are the biggest earner, making a return to NPC competition essential to help maintain the coffers. The speed with which players get back onto the field after they resume full contact training will vary, suggests Tony. “At an All Black and Super level they believe they need three weeks of contact work before they can start playing … at a senior club rugby level they would probably get away with two [weeks].” Tony said Tasman rugby staff, had all agreed to take a 20 percent pay cut during the lockdown.
Tony Lewis, Tasman Rugby Union CEO. Photo: Shuttersport. proach” to the on-going situation, adapting plans as they go along, with the goal of getting back onto the field very much in mind. “We have been watching the levels carefully … every day has been positive since we went to level four, the Government has done a good job. We will stay with our plan, there is a draw sorted out for division one and two, with a date in mind, but if that doesn’t work we will keep on moving it. “I would imagine the senior competition would run into a bit of the August-September window
to get it completed, which would be good because the Mitre 10 Cup players who are not playing in that competition will be able to play club rugby.” If that happened, Tony envisaged a scenario where a senior club match could be played as a curtain-raiser to a Mitre 10 Cup match. He suggested that members of the Mako squad not required on game day, or returning from injury, would likely slot into club sides, making for some exciting possibilities. Tasman made an early move to cancel rep rugby, below Mitre 10

A message from Mayor Tim King It’s a relief to many to be able to be back at work under the Alert Level Three restrictions. Our district certainly has a busier feel to it now. I encourage everyone to support the local businesses that have been able to reopen if they can but the most crucial thing is to do it safely. Minimise the times you need to leave the house – staying home is still the safest option. Use online or telephone ordering and contactless delivery options whenever you can. Some businesses are offering safe collection points for goods too but don’t lose sight of the physical distances. You always need to stay two metres away from anyone who isn’t in your bubble. Let’s stick with the rules and wait for an update on Monday 11 May about what our next steps will be. Be kind, be patient and keep doing the right thing.
Council services at Level Three Resource Recovery Centres Normal opening hours have resumed at most sites, but with limited services. The Collingwood site will only open on Thursday mornings from 9.00 am to 12.00 pm. Sites are open to all commercial customers for waste, greenwaste, cleanfill and scrap metal only, using contactless transactions. Sites are open for domestic customers for waste and greenwaste disposal only, using contactless transactions (Paywave only, no cash. Usual limits will apply – check with your bank). There is no recycling dropoff, no reuse shop activity and no whiteware, hazardous goods or other materials where face-to-face contact or manual handling is required. Please delay your trip to the Resource Recovery Centre or arrange contactless collection by a commercial waste company if possible. Other services • Our offices remain closed but you can contact us 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling 03 543 8400. Our website, tasman.govt.nz has lots of information and some services you can do online so pay it a visit. • Library services are currently all happening online. If you’re not already a library member, sign up for a digital membership to access lots of great resources and content. Visit the membership page on the library website to get started. • Playgrounds, boat ramps and community facilities remain closed. You should still do your exercise as close to home as possible and remember to keep that two metre distance from others. • Kerbside recycling and rubbish collection services continue as normal.
Good practice for outdoor burning The fire ban has now been lifted and as we head into the winter months, smoke from outdoor burning causes many problems and extra care is needed to reduce the effect it has. First check if you are allowed to burn outdoors, it’s banned year round in Richmond and Motueka and not permitted over winter in other places. Check our website for details. Where outdoor burning is allowed, every effort must be made to minimise smoke:
Youth Council writing competition The Tasman Youth Council is running a writing competition for 13 – 18 year olds in the Tasman region. Proposed by Tasman Youth Councillor Gulliver MacDonald, who has organised it with the help of fellow Youth Councillors Jacob Evans and Mackenzie Brough, the theme is “Life in Lockdown.” Entries should be under 800 words and must be submitted by 13 May. You can get more details on the Tasman Youth Council Facebook page and entries can be sent to wyc@sporttasman.org.nz. A prize of $65 will be awarded to the winner, selected by Mayor Tim King.
Streets for people survey The COVID-19 lockdown has shown that lower levels of air pollution, more people using active transport, greater social cohesion and less people dying on our roads are all achievable goals. The lockdown has also challenged the idea that streets are designed for vehicles. Streets have been transformed into hubs of interaction, recreation, art and play. As we have walked, ridden and accessed spaces normally reserved for cars, should we now review how we plan these areas in future? Please visit the website tasman.govt.nz, search on “streets for people” and complete a short survey to tell us how the lockdown has changed your perception of streets and how you want them to look when the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. Feedback is invited until 31 May 2020.
Kingsland Forest track closures Forestry harvesting starts from 18 May in the Kingsland Forest area in Richmond. Walking and biking tracks will need to be closed to keep everyone safe while this work is carried out. The harvesting will be done in three phases and will take around four months to complete in total, with some overlap between phases. Phase One: All walking and biking tracks are closed above the Big Skid, Grassy Saddle and Upper Jimmy Lee Creek. Duration approx. 2 ½ months. Phase Two: All walking and biking tracks will be closed above Cell Phone Tower, Grassy Saddle and Valhalla Water Tanks. Duration approx. 2 months (overlapping with Phase Two and Three). Phase Three: All walking and biking tracks will be closed in the Reservoir Creek catchment and above Cell Phone Tower. Duration approx. 1 month. Visit our website, tasman.govt.nz for a map showing the closure locations and a copy of the harvest report. Please look out for the signage in place and stay out of the closed areas at all times. Thanks for your patience while we carry out this work as quickly and safely as possible.

Classified
WEDNESDAY 6 May 2020
Classifieds situations vacant
Reporter/Photographer Part-Time 20 hours We have a vacancy with immediate start for a person to take pics of what our community is up to. This is for all of our popular columns. They would also be required to write some of the smaller stories in the paper. We supply all camera gear and would be prepared to fully train the right person, however you must have a good command of the English language, not be shy at all and have a real love of this area and its people. Also, natural drive and common sense is needed, along with tidiness and accuracy. Some weekend work is required but it’s light. And yes, fine to work from home for most of the time.
