WW2 vet: “I’m not skiting!” Bruno Saia Reporter

bruno@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Alfred Richardson may be 98-years-old but the Richmond resident still remembers his days as a WW2 wireless operator well. While he didn’t see any action, Alfred’s role was a vital one – relaying radio messages from army officers. “You sit there with your headphones on, for four hours a day, and then you go four miles on your bicycle.” Alfred was stationed in England from the beginning of the war to two years afterward. He now lives at Oakwoods in Richmond and is one of the special guests at a lunch hosted by Motueka Returned Services’ Association (RSA), next Tuesday, 5 November. The event is for the remaining World War 2 veterans living in our region and will start at midday at the local RSA (49 High St, Motueka). About his experience during the war, Alfred says it was not particularly dramatic. “In New Zealand, if you tell a good story they say you are skiting (showing off), if you put anything in the paper about me, everyone will say I’m skiting, I have been to more than 30 countries and I’m not skiting, but I will be next Tuesday,” he says.

Higgins Heritage park chairperson John Hurley personally knows the capacity of each “baby” tractor of his brand new ‘Honey train’. Mountain Valley Honey at spring grove donated the honey drums, which are spacious in leg room when cut down and as John says “can fit children both young and old, and even older folks who want to feel young again.” The only risk that I can see for John is that folks will just not want to get off. Loathe, it should be about fairy’s and angels and we warn kids about stranger danger and then send them out to knock on doors!

Loathe, trick or treating is very American and I am not, I don’t do it.

Loathe, it’s commercial and very intrusive. My wife buys a bag of sweets and you’re up and down all night answering the doorbell.

Love, I grew up with it in the UK. I decorate the house and garden, the whole family is involved and it brings the community together.

Fire review points to preparedness Sara Hollyman “This will happen again, and we need to be prepared.” That’s the message from Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) after the release of an independent review into the operational response to the Tasman Fires. FENZ commissioned the independent review by the Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council to look at how they responded to the Pigeon Valley, and subsequent fires across the region. It found that there was a “general lack of awareness within the Nelson Tasman community around the risk, to them, of unplanned fire”. A common comment heard by the review was “it won’t happen again in my lifetime”, which they say demonstrates a reluctance, by

some, to change the way they do things. FENZ deputy chief executive Raewyn Bleakley speaking from Richmond Fire Station last Wednesday called the response a “truly collaborative and unified action” between multiple organisations. The fire, which began on February 5, burnt through 2300 hectares of land and, at its peak, had 23 helicopters, 2 fixed wing planes, 23 heavy machines and more than 150 firefighters battling to control and ultimately contain it. In the following days and weeks other fires broke out in Atawhai, Rabbit Island, Moutere Hills and Dovedale. “These extra fires added significantly to the challenge that we faced,” said Raewyn. Honouring local WW2 Veterans FRom PAGE 1 Kyle Abbott, president of Motueka RSA, says that the event was decided upon in conjunction with Nelson RSA and Richmond Waimea RSA to host our remaining WW2 veterans. “There are not many of them left and I just thought it was time that we actually recognise our veterans,” says Kyle. There are four WW2 veterans living in Motueka, five

in Richmond and about 25 in Nelson and most of them will be at the event on Tuesday. “At our Motueka RSA we’ve got about 1,300 members of which about 300 hundred of us are ex-services,” says Kyle, who was in the Royal New Zealand Air Force. The RSA reunites veterans of WW2, Korea, Vietnam and other theatres of war but also recognises those who served without ever being

deployed. “I think we need to celebrate these guys. They went overseas. A lot of them thought they were going on a holiday, but they walked into hell. My grandfather served in WW2 and I still wear his dog tag. He is long past now, but it is important to keep his memory alive and specially to celebrate those who are still here. These guys were just young boys when they went to war,” Kyle says. 98 year old Alfred Richardson, with a photo of himself at 19, in RAF uniform. Photo: Bruno Saia. Market at Oakwoods for all the community Bruno Saia Oakwoods residents can’t wait for their Mini Market, on Friday, 15 November, from 9am to midday. The residents will offer some products themselves, such as crafts, paintings and books and there will also be guests with jewellery, fresh baked bread, plants, cards and even Christmas cookie jars. Lots of the products are made by the residents. “All sorts of goodies for Christmas shoppers are welcome,” says Jan Edge, from Oakwoods reception. “It will be an open market, all out here in the recreation area, so it works even if the weather is not good.” “People can come along, do some shopping... We have it every year, always in November as a pre-Christmas market,” she says. Jan says that there will be no charge for the stall holders because their goal is to offer a shopping experience at the retirement village. “It is specially for the residents who don’t get out often. It’s really nice for them to do that,” she says. Anyone keen to participate can contact Jan at Oakwoods (357 Lower Queen Street, Richmond) or phone: 543 9700. “If we’ve got room, we can fit them in.”

Catchball team first off the mark for Richmond’s Santa Parade Susan Johnson Nelson Catchball were the first group to register their place in this year’s Santa Parade to be held in Richmond on November 24th. Having won People’s Choice last year in the walking parade, organiser of the float’s

decorations and Nelson Bays Catchball promotions coordinator, Laura Paynter decided to step up their game this year. “Last year we handed out lolipops, balloons and flyers and our duck was very popular, so we thought if we got a float we could do so much more,” she

says. “Michaels father is lending one of his trucks but we can’t have it until the Saturday before the parade so it will be a team effort to pull it off.” she says. “We have our theme and we’ve been collecting the materials we need so it will just be a matter of putting it together on the day,”

she adds. So if you are a business or organisation wanting to have a float in this year’s parade you will have to be quick, there may not be any room left if everyone is as keen as the Catchball team. Contact Charlotte Bidlake at Richmond Unlimited for details.

This week Miraka Norgate, from Richmond, brought a photo of her son Edward Norgate at the A&P Show in 1982. “He was wearing an oil skin jacket which he didn’t want to, but I told him that wearing it was the only way that he could go to the show, so he did it and it was the only time he wore it,” she says. The online ticket sales for this year’s Nelson A&P Show are already being sold. More information can be found at The Golden Edge Nelson A & P Show Facebook page.

‘Ghosts and Goblins’ all over Richmond Staff Reporter Richmond Mall was flooded with children of all ages on Thursday the 31st for their annual ‘Ghosts and Goblins’ events. Dressed as Batman and witches they dived into shops to yell ‘trick or treat’. “Following feedback from store managers last year we put volunteers in those stores that wished to participate this year to help, freeing the staff to continue with their work” says Caroline Bidlake from

Richmond Unlimited, who organised the event. The volunteers were from the Waimea Volleyball teams, also in costume. They also helped at the bouncy castle and bubble machine that was part of the entertainment in Sundial Square. Dyani Waldron took her 3 and 4-year-old children.” We stayed about an hour and the kids had a great time, in fact my son said it was the best Halloween he has had. For me it was a friendly, safe, familyorientated event” says Dyani.

Funds available for local culture Bruno Saia Do you have a great community art project that needs some dollars to help make it a success? The Creative Communities Scheme has money to help groups and individuals running arts projects in the Tasman District. The Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus is one of the groups that has been gladly receiving help from the fund. They are celebrating their 25th anniversary this week and owe much of their longevity to the fund. “It’s very important for us to get grant money because we wouldn’t survive otherwise.

Our members pay subscriptions, but that doesn’t cover all of our costs. We hire this venue at Club Waimea, we have to pay for the copyright to the music we purchase to sing, coaching fees and costumes for the performances,” says music director Kathy Jamieson. “Everyone should apply for it. We bring the joy of singing to a lot of women who are part of the group and that money is precious to us,” she says. Lloyd Harwood is the Creative Communities Nelson Scheme Administrator and he says that individuals, groups and organisations can apply for the fund. “To be eligible for assistance,

projects must provide benefits to the community and have an arts focus. An arts element as part of broader project could also be considered. Funding requests can be as little as is required but are usually capped at a maximum of $2,000.” Lloyd is happy to be contacted to assist with project and funding enquiries, although he says that “ the application process is accessible and relatively simple with often a good chance of getting some funding.” The next funding round for the Tasman Scheme closes on 10 November. For application forms visit tasman.govt.nz/ link/grants.

And to the delight of his 10-year-old granddaughter Hannah Granger, he finally made it. “My grandad has put a lot of time and effort into building the barrels and it has been a lot of fun watching him choose the colours and test riding them around the front lawn,” says Hannah. “He has got almost all the

The first Honey wagon is the observer who faces the riders so that he can let the driver know that all is well and keep a check on the passengers – the other seven are passenger wagons. There will be a competition in conjunction with the Community Fair at the Park on the 2nd January 2020 to name the ride and local businesses are invited to sponsor a wagon and have it named with their logo. Have you ever failed, felt like giving up? Have you ever made some huge mistakes that you want to forget or maybe you can’t get over some major disappointments? Well if you have, then don’t lose heart, because you are not the only one! So have I and we are all in illustrious company... the failures of the famous are many! Henry Ford said after he had failed and gone broke five times before he succeeded: “Failure provides the opportunity to begin again, more intelligently.” Abraham Lincoln failed as a businessman and as a lawyer, had a nervous breakdown and had multiple defeats in politics before he was elected as President. Winston Churchill failed at school and at Military College, had several defeats in political life before becoming Prime Minister. His mantra was “Never, Never, Never, Never

give up.” Thomas Edison was told by his teachers that he was “too stupid to learn anything.” He had 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb, but said he didn’t fail 1,000 times, but he just discovered 1000 things that didn’t work! One of Albert Einstein’s teachers described him as “mentally slow, unsociable, and adrift forever in foolish dreams.” He was also expelled from school . Walt Disney was fired by a newspaper editor because “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.” He went bankrupt several times before he built Disneyland! Decca Records turned down a recording contract with the Beatles, “We don’t like their sound!” and Elvis Presley was told, “You ain’t goin’ nowhere, son. You ought to go back to drivin’ a truck.” Beethoven’s teacher called him “hopeless as a composer.” Yet

he wrote five of his greatest symphonies while completely deaf and Van Gogh painted over 800 paintings yet sold only one. Twelve publishers rejected J.K. Rowling’s book and twenty-seven publishers rejected Dr. Seuss’s first book, We can learn valuable lessons from many of the great heroes of faith in the Bible. For example, Moses, King David and Joseph who had many major disappointments yet he was still able to say to his brothers who had plotted to kill him: “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. The apostle Peter learned from his massive failure and of course, Jesus death and resurrection was the supreme example in all of history of triumph coming out what seemed to be the ultimate disappointment, defeat and failure.

his song writing and selected covers. But don’t be fooled into thinking this is a set of gentle melancholy, Bill’s primary approach is ‘gutsy’. He has done his time howling above the clamour and is always capable of stepping it up a notch when the occasion or story requires. A long serving stalwart of New Zealand stages, Bill has played in bands (The Shot Band, Billy Bones, Hobnail, Parcel of Rogues and King Lazy) and as a soloist all over the country and further abroad. 2018 saw Bill conducting a success-

Bill Hickman describes himself as a ‘folkie with a chip on his shoulder’. He is an intense, lyrical singer/songwriter from Wellington and he will perform with his band at the Boathouse in Nelson on 22 November. Bill’s songs run the gamut from murder and outlaws to absent friends, love and gratitude. With a strong, gravel dragged voice and country inflected acoustic guitar; fans of Warren Zevon, Johnny Cash and Townes Van Zandt will find touchstones in

ful kickstarter campaign to complete the funding of his first full length solo album. In May 2019 ‘Crossbones’ the album was released kicking off six months of touring all over NZ. Bill’s live performances range from pin drop intimacy to the ring of feedback and shots fired. Bill Hickman, a ghost of gravel and smoke. Truffles by the dozens Susan Johnson So how many truffles do we need for Christmas? According to Bonnie Kempthorne, the organiser for the Christian based organisation, Truffles Nelson, “around 33,600.” Truffles Nelson started over 15 years ago and is responsible for making the truffles to be used in fundraising around the com-

munity. It has also for the past three years supported Global Impact who are working in the Philippines to create awareness of human trafficking through education. Based this year in the Brightwater community hall and armed with shifts of volunteers working hard over the recent weekend, the job was done. “At this level” she says, “we needed industrial sized mixers, so I

approached Gary Watson the owner of our local Fresh Choice and enlisted the help of his bakery manager Brendan Jeffery. And with their help and the wonderful help of the volunteers we got it done.” The delicious truffles have been pre-ordered by local churches and businesses and will be sold all over our region so if you’re a chocolate lover keep an eye out.

Overall sales, performance and store appearance were some of the criteria that defined the winner. “We provide a comprehensive service, an interior design makeover. “People don’t know we provide free measures and quotes, so

we’d like to get the word out. We pride ourselves on the service we provide and we get a lot of referrals and repeat customers because of it,” says Trish, who has been in the industry for 14 years. PH: 544 RICHMOND H: 544 75757575RICHMOND Graduation and prize giving week at our colleges is an opportunity to celebrate the success of our young people and the excellence of Nelson secondary schools. It is extra special for me having both a son and daughter completing college this year. The quality of Nelson schools is part of what makes our community so successful. It is about investing in the knowledge and skills for Nelson’s future. There is intense worldwide competition for talented business people, medical professionals, scientists etc, and to attract them to Nelson we need schools amongst the very best. Nelson has a proud heritage of

leadership in education. Our early settlers were revolutionary in their goal of schools being free and accessible to all. We should be very proud that Wakefield is home to New Zealand’s oldest primary school (established 1843) and that Nelson College (established 1856) is New Zealand’s oldest secondary school. We were ahead of the times in championing women’s education with the Girls College being established in 1883 and led by Kate Edgar, the first woman in the British Empire to get a university degree. A rich heritage is not enough to make a great school. I am proud of how both our original colleges have

our times like youth mental health, social media and increased cultural diversity. I particularly wish to pay tribute to retiring Nelson College Headmaster Gary O’Shea. The Gibbons Trade Academy, Whare and upgraded Rutherford Boarding House are part of Gary’s strong legacy. I am equally proud of Waimea and Nayland Colleges led by two of New Zealand’s top secondary school principals, Scott Haines and Daniel Wilson. Waimea College is under pressure from strong roll growth but continues to impress with its academic and sporting achievement. Nayland College was

struggling five years ago but is now going from strength to strength. I confess to a personal soft spot for Garin College. I was responsible for its establishment as Minister of Education. I like Nelson parents having the additional choice of this Catholic integrated school. It is a very successful college excelling in academics and the performing arts. How do we ensure the future success of our colleges? Firstly, we need to back our Boards and Principals. I worry that Government plans to centralise power with the Ministry of Education will reduce local decision making by Principals and Boards. Secondly, we do need healthy competition between our

colleges, by parents having choice about where to enrol. Thirdly, we need to champion the importance of the teaching profession. My optimism for the future always gets a boost from attending college prizegivings. I provide an Environment Award to all five colleges to recognise top students. Many other organisations also help by rewarding our talented young people. I congratulate the prize winners and wish all senior students well with their NCEA exams. My warmest tribute is to Nelson’s teachers who have given so much to my children and their peers as they now go out and make their way in the world. Advt.

School Athletics at Moutere Staff Reporter Over 600 primary school students from the Moutere Hills Cluster will become a part of history on Saturday 9 November. They will participate in the centenary of the Moutere Hills Combined Schools Athletics Day. This year’s event has been one hundred years in the making, starting in 1919, when the community decided it was a great opportunity to come together to recognise the ‘official’ end of WW1, and to celebrate Armistice Day that took place the year before in 1918. Some of New Zealand’s fallen heroes of the Great War had been educated at the local primary schools so the teachers met with the returned soldiers, together with friends and parents of the schools and decided to organise an athletics day to honour these people. It was decided to hold the sports day on the first anniversary of Armistice Day and all pupils attending the schools of Upper Moutere, Mapua, Mahana, Tasman, Neudorf, Lower Moutere and Harakeke were invited to compete in a day of track and field events and some other physical-fun activities. Grass kart racers turn muddy

A&P Showground Richmond 2020 21/22 Marchm 4pm - 8a

Staff Reporter

Nelson/Tasman

The challenge for students to build a go-kart and go racing at Tapawera Area School has turned into a mud bath; spinning wheels spraying drivers and making them unrecognisable at the end of a damp day’s track sliding. Racing had to be called off but not before everyone was mud-splattered and needing a hose down after the Nelson Marlborough Institute of

Technology (NMIT) go-kart challenge. Dozens of students representing Waimea College, Nelson College, Golden Bay High School, Tapawera, Murchison and Rai Valley Area schools and Blenheim Automotive Trades Academy who’ve been involved in NMIT engineering courses during the year took part in the 7th annual event. The West Coast Trades Academy from Greymouth also joined the muddy madness

for their first year with two grass karts. Golden Bay High School brought two karts and a motorised trike with flash pink rims. Competing students were part of NMIT’s Top of the South Trades Academy learning through the year, or Mechanical Engineering pre-trade students at NMIT. They’ve been building their kart as they go, using skills learned in fabrication, cutting and welding and machining and milling parts.

Racers take to the roads Yvonne West

Wednesday evening was the last race in the Spring Smugglers 5km series for 2019. It has been great to see 70-80 runners and walkers taking to the streets and parks of Tahunanui each Wednesday, enjoying camaraderie while getting their bodies and minds fit and active. While some great battles have

been had at the front of the field each week, participation and enjoyment were the key ingredients of the five races in the series. Joe Robson and Chris Sharland were two runners who have enjoyed very close encounters most weeks, this last race being no exception, with Joe in 18.06 mins edging out Chris by only 4 seconds. Opportunities abound for lo-

cal people to get out, keep themselves active and healthy by challenging themselves with regular physical activity. The summer schedule for running and walking in the Nelson/Tasman region, which starts this week, has events most weekday evenings and on Saturday afternoon for all ages and stages of fitness, so come out and challenge yourself.

Brotherly love, Dylan Hall puts his brother up the wall in the final stock car race. Photo: Rebecca Connor Maling.

Fireworks on and off the speedway track Jody Scott Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway lit-up the sky with their annual Coca-Cola Fireworks display in association with Brooks Auto Painters on Saturday night. A full house packed in to watch the fireworks on the track then up above once the racing finished and the sun went down. The racing got under way with the street stocks, they were racing hit to pass rules, there were plenty of hits and spins, the locals mixing it up with drivers from Christchurch and Blenheim keeping the crowd entertained. The Nelson Knights street stock team to face Blenheim was named with Kyle Davies, Kieran Davies, Ryan Musgrove, Neville Soper and KC Rose making the line-up. It was the stock cars that came out to play next, with Cody Teece’s return lasting less than

a lap when he was taken out by Troy Currie. Teece lost his rear wheel, he got the car fixed and returned to race the rest of the meeting, there were selections going on for the Tasman Thunder team to go to Christchurch to contest the Mainland Trophy. Adam Hall and Michael Paynter return to the team along with John Everett, Keightley Teece and Dylan Clarke. The stock cars ended with a bang with Dylan Hall tipping brother Adam upside down on the wall, much to the crowd’s delight. The TQ’s had the biggest field of the night with plenty of new and returning drivers making for some busy racing. Visiting driver Rodney Thompson took the first heat with Morgan Frost winning heat two then staying ahead of the field to take the 20-lap feature. The youth ministocks continued to impress, Blake Hearne

won heat one with Cambell McManaway picking up heats two and three. The new drivers are improving all the time, while the older group had some close battles as they navigated around the newer drivers. There might be a shift in the side car grade with Nippy Ching and Shaun Solly taking all three wins in their heats and win the Brett Lusty Memorial Trophy, Adie Drake and Kieran Satherley having to settle for second. It is making for some close racing with some regular visitors boosting the numbers. The super stocks once again came down to a two-horse race between Alex Hill and Brett Nicholls, after Hill took the honours in the opening meeting it was Nicholls who prevailed to win the Dave Scott Memorial Trophy before the fireworks lit up the night sky to end an eventful night.

Have you managed to get out between the howling gales for a fish lately? Some of our members took the small window of opportunity last Saturday morning as they entered our annual Goldfish vs Sharks competition (girls vs guys). No prizes this time only bragging rights which are always great if you are the winning team. If you would like to know who the better fishers are you’ll need to join us for our monthly social day on 10th November (3-5pm @ City Club) when all will be revealed. Fishing is still patchy, lots of sharks and red cod, however the snapper seem to be arriving slowly, so should get better from here as the weather warms and the wind drops. There have been reports of brave spear fishers entering the water for a look

around and a few butterfish and crays being brought to the surface. The visibility along the boulder bank is less than ideal at the moment but you can get good days out of Okiwi Bay and around D’Urville Island. Bring the 7mm suit if you have one, the water is still quite chilly. The club’s traditional Kid’s Wharf Fishing will take place on the 16th of November. This is a great family event with fish and chips for lunch, generously sponsored by Jimmy’s Bait and Concrete Cutter and Concretex. This will be a perfect opportunity to try out Jimmy’s range of baits while having a fun day with the kids. If you would like to know more about the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club check out www.dawn breakers.co.nz or come along to our next social day. Tight lines!

Kickstart your compost with $30 subsidy

Crack down on leaks!

November is Kickstart Compost Month and, to help you get going, we're offering Tasman households $30 off a compost bin, worm farm or bokashi set from approved retailers.

We’ve had less rain than usual so far this year and a dry summer is on the horizon again. That means everyone needs to treat every drop of water as precious.

Partnerships and education officer Nichola Brydon says composting is an easy and effective way to reduce the amount of food waste going to landfill, as well as reduce the carbon emissions it creates.

We are cracking down on water leaks and will have a contractor out and about hunting them down. A huge amount of water can be lost through leaks before you know it.

“Food and garden waste makes up about 30% of our landfill, and much of this could be composted at home or through Council or commercial services,” she says.

You can help fight the battle against water leaks. If you see signs of a water leak on public land, please call us any time on 543 8400 and we’ll follow it up.

Free composting workshops will be held in Richmond, Motueka and Golden Bay during November – head to tasman.govt.nz/link/compost for details and to download your $30 voucher.

At your place, if you have a water meter (they are usually located below ground level in a box near the road boundary of your section), it’s easy to check for a leak – just follow these simple steps:

Deadline for applications 22 November 2019

Shut off all household appliances and outside taps. Once everything is off, return to the meter and check out the white (cog) dial.

A special licence allows for the sale of alcohol at special occasions or events. They are normally used to licence oneoff events where no licence is currently held, such as a food and wine festival or a quiz night. A special licence can also be used to extend the hours or area of a licensed premises for a special occasion or event.

If you have no leaks the cog shouldn’t move. If the white cog continues to spin you may have a leak within your property which needs dealing with.

A special licence is a temporary licence.

• water appearing in a concrete area

How to apply:

• wet patches on the lawn or garden

Visit tasman.govt.nz/link/special-licence for more information and application forms.

• dripping from an overflow pipe

Upcoming maritime events

• a constantly dripping tap, or running toilet

The Harbourmaster has (or may soon) grant authorisations for the following events. These events may affect public use of the maritime area for a certain period of time. Event activity: Waka Ama event Date and location: 15 and 16 November, Kaiteriteri Event activity: Giant Slalom and Christmas Picnic Date and location: 15 December 2019, Waimea River

So now you need to find the source of the leak. Trace your water pipe from the meter to the house. The clues to a water leak that you need to look out for include:

• damp areas (inside, outside and under the house) Don’t let water leaks undo all the good work you’re doing to reduce water use. Seek them out and fix leaks fast. Remember if you’re looking for inspired ways to reduce water use, search water saving tips at tasman.govt.nz.

Improving Gardner Valley Road We’re upgrading a stretch of road intersecting with the Moutere Highway to improve road safety.

Event activity: New Year's Eve public fireworks display Date and location: 31 December 2019 to 1 January 2020, Torrent Bay

The Gardner Valley Road project will start early next year and will take about eight weeks, at an expected cost of $400,000.

Event activity: Cardboard boat race Date and location: 25 January 2020, Tata Beach/Ligar Inlet

The intersection realignment will take out the sharp corners of the last 300 metres of Gardner Valley Road before it joins the Moutere Highway.

Creative Communities Scheme Do you have a great community arts project that just needs some dollars to make it happen? Creative Communities provides funding to support community involvement in the arts, whether it's music, theatre, festivals, mural painting, outdoor sculpture, kapa haka, singing, art workshops or something else. Applications are open now, with the next round closing on 10 November. How to apply: For application forms visit tasman.govt.nz/ link/grants or phone Lani Evans on 03 543 8980 for more information.

Consultation closes 18 November 2019 The draft Responsible Camping Strategy is intended to provide direction as we manage budget and freedom camping through regulations and by providing facilities and visitor information. We’ve been talking to a wide range of groups and organisations to develop the draft, including Te Tau Ihu iwi. Now we need to hear from you – this strategy will inform the way we manage freedom camping in your community.

Help us plan for the future of Saxton Field First stage consultation closes 16 December 2019 We’re reviewing the way we manage Saxton Field – and we need your help to ensure a bright future for our region’s largest sports, recreation and events venue. Between 4 October and 16 December 2019 we're asking what you enjoy about Saxton Field, how happy you are with the opportunities provided for sport, recreation and play, as well as the natural environment and landscape. Most importantly we want to know: What’s your vision for the future of Saxton Field? Visit tasman.govt.nz/feedback for more information and to fill in the survey.

Alcohol licence applications Current applications for alcohol licences, including information on how to object, are advertised on our website.

HAVE YOUR SAY:

Come along to meet some of our friendly local police officers at the Cops with Cakes road safety expo. The cops will be handing out delicious ‘copcakes’ and combining road and community safety information with family-friendly activities and entertainment, including rides, games, prizes, and a free barbecue for the kids. All our local emergency services will be on site and many of Nelson-Tasman's community organisations will be there too, giving demonstrations, driver training, and community advice and support. It’s a chance to get to know and ask questions of those with specialist knowledge in a relaxed environment. We’re supporting the event in partnership with the New Zealand Police, the New Zealand Transport Agency and Nelson City Council.
