Big changes for Richmond streets Jo Kent Reporter
jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz
More than 400 Richmond households will have the streets they live on transformed into ‘neigh-
bourhood greenways’ after concerns were raised over road safety. Tasman District Council has earmarked 15 streets for changes that it is hoped will reduce vehicle numbers and lower speeds. Council’s community relations
manager Chris Choat says this could involve a street that is oneway for motor vehicles but allows people to cycle in either direction, via a contra-flow cycle lane or separated path. He says the changes could also include street
closures, speed humps or cushions, and reduced speed limits. Last week the public were invited to a co-design meeting to discuss current problems. Main concerns included the high speeds at which vehicles
travel through neighbourhoods, as well as on-street parking. Some said, with limited parking in Richmond town centre, residential streets were becoming

Big changes coming to Richmond streets fROM PAGE 1 overrun by workers who leave their vehicles there for the day. Ruby Aberhart, 90, who has lived on Crescent Street for 25 years, says due to parking being on both sides of the street, she struggles to get in and out of our driveways because the roads are so narrow. “Sometimes it’s hard to get a space outside too. We hardly ever leave the house now as cars coming speeding along.” This issue also affects emergency vehicles as they are unable to drive down the road due to lack of room.
A resident recently suffered a cardiac arrest and emergency services had to park 40m away and walk to the property because of limited access. “It’s only a matter of time before a really serious accident happens,” says Ruby. She also raised the issue of overhanging foliage which decreases pavement size and often makes surfaces slippery. “Walkways should be kept clear for the safety of everyone.” Senior transport engineer for TDC Mike Van Enter says getting the community involved in planning is quite new for council.
“Normally we’d sit around a table and come up with a solution and then put it into place.
“
Sometimes it’s hard to get a space outside too. We hardly ever leave the house now as cars coming speeding along.” Ruby Aberhart
“
This way, we get to hear from the people who this will affect from the outset.”
During the next two months, the council will meet with residents to further discuss ways each street can be improved. Then, in September, the temporary or permanent solutions will be confirmed. The implementation stage comes at the end of the year and a review on how things are working out will take place in February. “Temporary solutions are helpful because it means we can trial ideas before they are set in stone,” says Mike. “If they are successful with residents, we can keep them or make changes if they are needed.”
Over 400 households will be affected in an initiative to improve road saftey in Richmond. Photo: Supplied.

‘Crazy’ demand for commercial property Staff Reporter Demand for commercial property is booming in the region, with a shortage of industrial land. About 60 would-be buyers recently vied for just 10 prime industrial development sites in a new local subdivision, with sites fetching a total of $25 million in unconditional sales in less than a month. Local Colliers commercial broker Geoff Faulkner said businesses were clamouring for bare land on which to build premises for a variety of uses, including agriculture, aquaculture, construction, logistics and engineering. He says the region has never seen the likes of demand for this type of property, which was once home to a large piggery back in the 1950s. Geoff says, when this large block was released to the market it unleashed a whole new wave of demand from businesses seeking to expand and others wanting to design-build for their specific purposes. “Nelson has been growing very very well for quite a few years and we’ve just slowly got to a point that there was a shortage of industrial land, and recently
Berryfields Crossing is one big development in Richmond that is capturing the market’s attention. Photo: RNZ. as the new sites have been developed and opened up to the market, they’ve just gone like hot cakes.” Fifty-nine buyers recently contested 10 prime industrial brownfields sites on Quarantine Road, in a newly-developed subdivision that was marketed by Geoff and colleague Paul Jarvie. Ranging from 3000sq m to 2.3 ha, the sites collectively netted nearly $25 million in unconditional sales. The project started with Patrick Fontein, a director of developer Studio D4, working
closely with storage container company Boxman, which had been located on the Quarantine Rd site for 22 years. Boxman is expanding into the 2.3 ha site. Studio D4 and the Colliers brokers carried out considerable research into the needs of large industrial occupiers in Nelson, as input into the overall Studio D4 masterplan. “We wanted to make sure we partnered with potential end users to work out the best possible solutions for them,” Geoff says. “We listened carefully to various requests and that meant we were able to fine tune the masterplan so that when we went to the market we knew we had it right. And that certainly proved to be the case.” Quarantine Rd is one of the key arterial routes providing access to Nelson Airport and is close to the CBD. Geoff says that together with scarce supply, industrial operators are being buoyed by low interest rates. He says the price for industrial land had about doubled over the past year or so and was going for between $300 to $400 a square metre, with the most desirable sites fetching $500. - With RNZ

Plan adopted
Tasman’s 10-year plan has been adopted. After 1719 public submissions and countless hours of work by Tasman District Council members, the plan was passed on 30 June in a 11-3 vote. Tasman Mayor
Tim King says the scope of projects and services included in the final plan reflected the needs of Tasman as an area of rapid growth. He said the plan provides the infrastructure necessary to match projected population expansion with the costs being largely met by those who directly contribute to growth. “The decision to proceed with revised option A to fund the Waimea Community Dam offers the best outcome for Tasman ratepayers and a more equitable funding mechanism for irrigators,” says Tim. “The irrigators pay for most of their
share of the cost overruns, rather than council collecting their share through a targeted rate.” The plan comes into effect on 1 July.

Sweet win for Murchison honey producers Jenny Nicholson Reporter

Trees and Bees manager Sam Doran says he may be biased but thinks manuka honey tastes better in the South Island – and now he has the proof. The Murchison-based company has just taken out the national award for best Monofloral Manuka Honey. More than 1000 delegates recently attended the Apiculture New Zealand National Honey Competition in Rotorua. All entries were blind tasted by three judges, honouring producers from a range of honey categories. Trees and Bees added to their win with a second placing in the Honeydew Honey section. “We were ecstatic with the win,” says Sam. “I don’t think we have ever entered before, so to come away with a win the first time is exciting.” Trees and Bees, along with its Honey label “Tutaki Hon-

Young dreams shape futures ...End of Story Final facts on some of our stories
Jenny Nicholson Reporter
jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Waimea Intermediate student Holly Kersten always wanted to be an astronaut – however, after realising her dreams might be moonshot, she is now considering being a roofer. Students at Waimea Intermediate School have had their eyes opened to a wider range of career pathways this term. However, research shows that what they dream of doing now will have a big impact on what job choices they have in the future. Holly says she is a “bit annoyed” after finding that is hard to become an astronaut. “But if I really try, I will achieve something really big. I’m also thinking of being a roofer.” Teacher Shelley Roberts says the students have been focussing on their future career options this term by looking at the issue from various angles. People from various occupations visited the school over the term.

The 2019 study, undertaken by Inspiring the Future Aotearoa, showed nearly 20 per cent of children wanted a career as a sportsperson, topping the chart regardless of gender, ethnicity, or the decile of their school. In contrast, Waimea Intermediate students’ choices showed more variety with gaming and social media influencer and YouTuber all being popular choices. Figures revealed there is still gender bias with job selection, with boys more likely to aspire to a career as a social media influencer or policeman and girls more likely to look at a career as a vet or teacher. According to the study, perceived enjoyment of career is the biggest influence on children’s future job dreams. To that end, student Jayden McKinlay says he has always wanted to be a policeman because he thinks it would be fun. “I like the gear, the tasers. I’ve also learned that it’s about keeping the world safe and stopping speeders.”

Shining a light on sustainability Jo Kent and Sara Hollyman Maggy Johnston’s passion is turning materials that would otherwise end up in landfill into art. Now the Richmond resident’s talent will be on show as part of this year’s Te Ramaroa. Formerly Light Nelson, the show is expanding from its previous Queens Gardens location to include installations all over the city. “I chose to make sea creature sculptures because it appeals across the generations,” says Maggy. A giant stingray took Maggy hundreds of hours to make and is intricately crocheted using copper wire, which has left her with callouses on her hands. “The materials I choose are rugged and rough and that’s part of their charm, turning them into something beautiful,” she says. “But my poor fingers and hands have rough patches all over them. I do tend to suffer for my art but it’s about raising awareness in terms of sustainability and how people dispose of their rubbish.” Her installation includes a three-metre-long eel made

EV sales soar with rebates Jenny Nicholson Reporter
jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz
With rebates on electric cars coming into effect last week, The Car Company has been busy selling. General manager Ben Brownie says there has been increased interest in both EVs and plug-in hybrid vehicles since last month’s announcement of a rebate scheme for the purchase of EVs. The rebates are up to $8,625 for new and $3,450 for used vehicles. However, Ben says the increased demand for EVs has also seen the prices of Japanese imports go up. “Dealers are all trying to buy a limited supply. So, people will pay about the same as they would have previously before the rebate because of price increases.”
He says there is not a huge variety of EVs in the used market. An EV of about $35,000 would go to Christchurch easily, where those in the $15,000 to $20,000 range won’t do all a family wants, such as longer holiday trips. Ben says a plug-in hybrid of about $15,000 would require two or three stops on a trip to Christchurch. Meanwhile, there has been no downturn in sales for other vehicles. Following the announcement of a fee on higher-emitting vehicles to come into effect on 1 January 2022, sales have risen for utes and vans as buyers move to beat the tax. Alex Oliver from the car sales division of The Car Company says they have had a massive month. “People are wanting to get the subsidy. There is a lot more interest and a lot more questions, and more sales of non-EV vehicles.”

Fonterra staff help plant taste trail Jenny Nicholson Reporter
jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Fonterra’s Brightwater employees recently took off their PPE and donned gardening gloves to help plant 400 native trees near their workplace.
As part of the project to beautify the Great Taste Trail alongside the Wairoa River, they joined representatives from Nelson Tasman Cycle Trail Trust and Tasman District Council to do the planting. “Many staff use the trail for
walks and bike rides with their families and they wanted to be an active part of its improvement,” says Fonterra environmental manager Caitlyn Poole. She says that the team was so enthusiastic about helping that most of the 30 site
employees turned up. “The planting day really demonstrated the attitude of our team on site – getting the best job done with a smile on their face,” says Caitlyn. After the planting, she says, it was straight back to work at the plant.
Max Brown, Levi Thompson, Lily James, and Sam Schwass are part of the cast of Richmond Primary School’s production of ‘Kiwiana Caper’. Deputy principal and choreographer Glenna Armstrong says it fits beautifully with their rich topic for the term, Kiwiana. The production will be held at Hope Community Hall on 7 July at 12pm and 7pm and again on Thursday, 8 July at 7 pm. Photo: Jenny Nicholson.

Div 2 final four decided SportS Waimea Weekly
The incredibly tight division two rugby competition has found its final four who will square off in the semi-finals this weekend. Heading into the final round, Waimea, Wanderers and the Tapawera Valley Stags were all in contention for the last remaining spot in the top four. In Brightwater, Wanderers met the Valley Stags, needing a win to keep their season alive. It was the visitors who made the better start though, maintaining possession and recycling the ball excellently in the opening exchanges for 12 phases. It appeared that the first half would end with teams locked together at a penalty apiece but a fine break in the last action of the half resulted in a try to the Stags’ centre James Holland. The second half had much more action for the scoreboard. Firstly, with a penalty to Wanderers to close to 10-6, followed by a tight period of 15 minutes without any additional score. Then a smart play freed up the Valley Stags left wing
Justin Davis, who ran 60 metres before offloading to Tommy Allen and creating the game breaker score which, with the conversion, was 17-6. Just five minutes later, 16-year-old Justin Davis repeated his determined running, finishing off an excellent move and scampering 55 metres to score under the posts. Wanderers showed genuine resilience in scoring two tries in the final ten minutes but they had left their run far too late, and Valley Stags completed a fully deserved victory at 24-20. Wanderer’s coach Al Davis was still full of praise for the team performance during the season and acknowledged that they were outplayed by Stags on the day. “With just three men involved from last year’s final playing today, it shows how far we’ve come this season.” This Saturday will see Stoke hosting Marist at Greenmeadows in a rematch from the weekend which saw Stoke prevail 36-18. Waimea will take on first placed Wanderers’ midfielder Jake Jenner gives the big ‘don’t argue’ Collingwood after a bonus point to a Stags defender during his side’s 24-20 loss in Brightwater on Saturday. Football: Nelson Suburbs ended its New World Premiership campaign in stunning fashion, upsetting the previously unbeaten Cashmere Technical 1-0 in Christchurch on Saturday. The win sees Suburbs finish fourth on the points table, three clear of Selwyn and three shy of Christchurch United. In local division one action there were three one sides wins and a draw in the men’s competition, with top three teams Rangers, Richmond and FC Nelson all picking up 4-0 wins.
Netball: Prices Waimea Ahurei’s superior points differential has kept them ahead of Jacks OPD on the table as both sides picked up hard fought wins on Thursday evening. Jacks held off another spirited effort from a very inexperienced Nelson College for Girls side, prevailing 4832 in the latest round of the Nelson Premier Netball competition. It was a closer contest on court two between Richmond45 and Jacks Magenta with the sides all square at 11all after the first quarter. Richmond came back tto take a 45-41 victory. Meanwhile, Prices Waimea edged Stoke NBS 53-42.

Safety around underground boxes Are you one of the many people who have wondered “What are all the little black and grey boxes on the footpath/ side of the road …?” Former Tasman United footballer Callan Elliot is set for an Olympic debut later this month. Photo: Supplied.
Callan shooting for Olympic glory Jonty Dine Reporter

These are Network Tasman’s ‘underground boxes’. They are the protective covers we place over the fuses that connect the underground power cables to the service cables conveying electricity to your house or business. As these boxes have live electrical components inside them, it’s important for public safety that they have securely fitted covers. We have about 12,000 underground boxes on our network, most of them in urban areas. As they are generally in public spaces they sometimes get damaged when: z
vehicles accidentally run into them, causing the cover to loosen or crack
z
people drill holes or insert screws into them
z
some have their covers removed by people not authorised to do so.
These are all dangerous situations, as they can expose you to the live electrical parts inside the box and put you at risk of electrocution. If a box gets repeatedly damaged by vehicles, we will look at putting protective bollards around it. Underground boxes must be left alone and only networkapproved contractors are permitted to remove the covers. Putting screws into an underground box or drilling holes into one is extremely dangerous! If anything ever causes you to need to interact with a box please phone us. If you accidentally damage an underground box, or if you see one that has been damaged, let us know straight away by phoning our fault line 0800 508 100. If you have any questions about the electricity industry or would like to suggest a potential topic for Network Tasman’s monthly column, please send us an email with ‘News Article’ in the subject line to info@networktasman.co.nz

Debuting for your country is a nerve-wracking experience, but if you throw the world’s biggest sporting stage into the mix then the pressure becomes extreme. Callan Elliot is set to play his first game for the New Zealand football team at the Olympics in Tokyo later this month. Despite the stakes, the 21-yearold defender says he is relishing the challenge. “I feel a bit nervous playing at that level, but that’s part of it and that turns into excitement.” He says it has been a long journey to selection. “It’s a dream come true after a lot of hard work and sacrifices.” Callan moved from Scotland to Richmond as a seven-yearold where he went to Waimea
College before Nelson College and played his junior footy for Suburbs. His talent was quickly recognised as he started to work closely with Paul Ifill, eventually transferring to Rathkeale College to join his football academy. “I don’t think I’d be here without him.” After nine appearances for the Wellington Phoenix, Callan took his talents to Greece to join Xanthi. Callan is not content with just making the ‘Olywhites’ squad. “I want to be starting and playing every game.” The former Nelson College star says he is not daunted by the calibre of opposition. “I think we have a good-looking squad, and we have a good chance of making it.” The Olywhites will meet South Korea, Honduras and Roma-
nia in pool play. Callan says, though he had limited game time in Greece, the experience has made him a better player. “Even though I didn’t play over there, training with top quality players helped me improve my game.” Callan says his friends and family were elated to learn he would be part of the global spectacle. “My mother was in tears when I told her.” Callan will turn 22 today but he won’t be out partying to celebrate. “Probably just training or playing Fifa with the boys.” Olywhites Olympic Fixtures (NZ time) Thursday, July 22: v South Korea, 8pm Sunday, July 25: v Honduras, 8pm Wednesday, July 28: v Romania, 8.30pm
