Bowaters driving into future after 75 years Charles Anderson Journalist

When Raymond Bowater came back from WW2, he was a qualified mechanic looking for a way to provide for his family. It was 1945 and he had four boys and a girl. What he and his friend Bill Clifford decided on was creating a motor garage That one garage grew into 16 franchises of car dealerships in its heyday. Now, 75 years on from that first garage, the family and the Bowater Motor Group are reflecting on how far they have come. “He started from scratch,” says Raymond’s son Rodney, who, along with his other siblings carried on the family business. Rodney says he and his siblings were raised with a competitive spirit that saw them play sports all across the region and cemented the importance of having the company be deeply involved with the community. Rodney, still chair of the Bowater Motor Group board, has worked in the family business all of his life, alongside his late brother Derrol. Now into its fourth generation, it is still very much a family business. “We all made decisions that we all agreed on, and if we didn’t all agree, we didn’t do it. We have always had a close relationship as a family and valued that extremely over the

Unity is a value of ours.” But at its core, Rodney says that the company has always been about service. “Very simply, we supply all your motoring needs – that includes being there to serve you. Not just, ‘now we have sold you a car and you are history’. “We intentionally go out of our way to provide that service. We don’t take it for granted and never have.” Now the company has the Toyota franchises in Nelson, Richmond and Motueka, the Hyundai, Isuzu and Renault franchises, a Mag and Turbo in Nelson and a Caltex in Motueka. Rodney says the company wants

And that’s a car that suits a lifestyle and leaves customers without any worries. It might not have been on Raymond’s mind when he started the business 75 years ago, but the group is now thinking that

autonomous and environmentally-friendly vehicles will increasingly be the future. Technology is changing and the Bowater Motors Group have no intentions of being left behind. That will dictate the sorts of cars they sell and how they sell them – whether it’s in person or virtually. “The world has changed, and the

speed of change is significant, you can only imagine what the next 10, 15 or 50-years’ time is going to be like.” Regardless, Rodney says the company has a mantra that will take them through that period: “A history we are proud of, a present we are committed to and a future we are certain.”

The Nelson-Marborough Rescue Helicopter had another busy time on Sunday. It and its dedicated crew were called to the Stern Valley Hut on the Old Ghost Road to pick up a person with an injured leg. They dropped that person off at Murchison Hospital so they could head to a medical event in Pohara, and that person was flown to Nelson Hospital. Around 3.50pm the helicopter flew to the Aniseed Valley to pick up another person with a leg injury who was flown to Nelson Hospital.

Dry winter causes low water reserves Matt McCrorie

One of the warmest winters on record in the Tasman region could cause concern for water levels as summer approaches. The Moutere saw winter rainfall at 41% below average, while rainfall was 44% below average in Richmond. These numbers are reflected across the wider Tasman district, with Tākaka seeing rainfall of 36% below average for the same period. Tasman District Council environment manager, Dennis Bush-King, says that water levels are lower than normal at the moment. “For the Richmond and Waimea area we are tracking at about 33 per cent under where we would usually be for this time of the year “While the river levels are ok at the moment, irrigation has started earlier – you can see that pumping effect on the aquifers,” he says. Dennis says that dry weather heading into summer will see greater demand on the region’s aquifers, and the Dry Weather Taskforce will convene for the first time later this month. Thanks to the dry conditions this winter, Dennis says the region will be on the back foot

Pak’nSave staff strike as frustration boils over Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Frustrations after five years of failed negotiations finally boiled over on Friday last week, with Pak’nSave Richmond workers taking strike action to demonstrate their anger at the lack of progress. Five years of negotiations have failed to deliver a collective agreement or a living wage. “Members at Richmond Pak’n Save have been in negotiation for their first collective agreement for five years, which is an absurd amount of time to be underpaid, undervalued, and uncertain about your entitlements and conditions,” says FIRST Union organiser Ross Lampert. Several union members from Pak’nSave Richmond walked out from their work at the store at different times during the day and handed out leaflets and spoke with customers about their working conditions. Pak’nSave stores are individually owned but answer to South Island Foodstuffs, which operates separately from its North Island counterpart. FIRST union has negotiated many collective agreements with Foodstuffs stores in the North Island. The Foodstuff South Island website states that social responsibility is central to their businesses. ‘This is demonstrated by the way we treat our people, the local community and the environment,’ the website states. “At a time when supermarkets are making huge profits, it’s really shameful that the Richmond Pak’n’Save owners are continuing to fight against progress and try-

Photo: Matt McCrorie. ing to stall and delay bargaining at their employees’ expense,” Ross says. Pak’nSave Richmond employees, like all supermarket workers, are classed as essential workers and will be called on again if the country returns to lockdown, Ross says. Union delegate for Pak’nSave, Jenny Wells, who was worked for the supermarket for 17 years, says a living wage would make a huge difference in the lives of her fellow workers. “It’s nice hearing how valued you are as an essential worker lately, but we’ve not seen anything to back that sentiment up from Foodstuffs in the South Island

yet,” says Jenny. Pak’nSave Richmond employees were joined by members of the public and other union delegates from different sectors. Gabriella Newman, a union delegate in a different sector, turned up to show solidarity with workers and delegates from Pak’nSave. “It’s not easy with companies who don’t like unions, and don’t want to sit down and negotiate, it’s really important that we stick together.” Labour candidate for Nelson and former FIRST union organiser, Rachel Boyack, says that the workers decided to strike because they were frustrated at the lack of progress over the last five years,

and believes that Pak’nSave Richmond owner Andrew Howard should return to the bargainingtable himself. “We think that it is really important that the employer returns to the bargaining-table himself as he is the decision maker.” She says Labour will introduce industry wide fair pay agreements, if re-elected in the upcoming voting. “We have situations in the supermarket industry where one employer is unionised and another isn’t, our goal is to ensure that regardless of where you work you get a decent pay, training, sick leave and, where appropriate, redundancy.”

Nelson Matters

Housing is a major issue for Nelson as rents and house prices soar. These increases are impacting on those struggling to find a home to rent, first home buyers unable to get a foot in the door and businesses unable to get skilled staff to move to Nelson for lack of housing. Labour’s answer at Election 2017 was Kiwibuild. The promise of 100,000 affordable homes was Labour’s flagship policy repeated in campaign pamphlets, candidate and street corner meetings by the Nelson candidate. She said Nelson would get at least 1,000 Kiwibuild homes. None have been built. None are under construction. None are planned.

Kiwibuild has wasted huge sums of taxpayer’s money and delayed new private sector housing. The developer of 200 homes in Toi Toi Street says the mucking around by Kiwibuild bureaucrats has only delayed the Victory project that is now proceeding without Government support. The lesson of Kiwibuild is that there is no single magic bullet to our housing problems. The Government cannot build houses faster or more cheaply than building companies. We need to change the laws and rules that make developing housing so slow and expensive, help Councils with the infrastructure costs, help first home buyers

with getting a deposit, stop adding costs to the rental sector and give more support to the community housing sector. Replacing the Resource Management Act that makes it so expensive to create new sections is National’s top priority. We bypassed it in Christchurch after the earthquakes and the costs of renting and buying a house is now better there than any part of New Zealand. The Homestart scheme I introduced as Minister in 2015 that gives grants of up to $20,000 towards a deposit has helped over 80,000 people buy their first home including 2,300 in Nelson and Tasman. The numbers being helped is

She says an MP should encourage both parties to productively engage in process. “The role of an MP should be to lend public support to the workers, and I have written to the employer. An MP should be encouraging both parties to be engaged in the process.” “My concern is that the employer hasn’t been going to the bargaining table, and that undermines the process.” The group began protesting outside Pak’nSave Richmond, but was asked to leave by Richmond Mall management. Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clerq was contacted but declined to comment.

declining. The problem is that the house price caps have not kept up with the 25% increase since 2017. These need adjusting to realistic levels. Nelson rents have gone up $68 a week under Labour over the past three years compared to an increase of $20 for the previous three years under National. The issue is Labour keeps loading extra costs and regulation on the rental sector that gets passed onto tenants. National will pull back on excessive regulation. Building more state houses is part of the solution. Labour has demolished and sold more state houses than they have built in the last

three years in Nelson and Tasman. The Government needs to partner with our wonderful community housing organisations like Habitat for Humanity, Abbeyfield and the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust. The Trust built 14 new homes in Nelson between 2014-17 but none since under Labour due to the grant scheme being stopped. The last part of the housing puzzle needing attention is a growing group of homeless Nelson people with complex mental health and addiction needs. These people need to be funded into supported housing like that provided by the Salvation Army in other parts of New Zealand. Advt.

Region’s cheapest fuel revealed Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Three outlets vied for lowest fuel prices in a recent Waimea Weekly survey, with only decimal points separating them. Data was collected from seven selected petrol stations around the region, on Friday October which found that Caltex Richmond offers the best price on 91 and diesel. The cheapest 91 fuel out of stations surveyed in the region was Caltex Richmond, at $184.7 per litre, with the most expensive fuel in the region coming in at a whopping 212.9 at Caltex in Hope, a mere four kilometres away from its Richmond counterpart. In terms of diesel prices, Caltex Richmond was the winner again at $113.7, while Caltex Hope took out the most expensive price, coming in at $1.379. Owner of Caltex Richmond Kyle Lightfoot says that being competitive is important. “We try to be as competitive as we can.” The Hope Caltex site, which has the highest prices for both 91 and diesel on the board out of fuel stations selected, is corporately owned, and prices are set by Caltex.

Caltex Richmond had the cheapest fuel and diesel prices in the region out of those surveyed, and owner Kyle Lightfoot says that it comes down to being competitive and knowing the local market. Photo: Matt McCrorie. “We have 100 per cent freedom with the pricing,” Kyle says. “We get a buy price – to remain competitive you play around with your margin.” Kyle says that being locally owned and operated makes a huge difference when it comes to being competitive around pricing. “Being a local, I’m looking at

competitors’ prices around the region several times a day.” As a truck stop, Caltex Hope is more likely to be used by companies that have fuel cards and will be getting a better price, but it’s still the most expensive place for local commuters to buy petrol or diesel. “I think one thing to re-

inforce is that we employ staff. When people compare prices on unmanned sites, their overheads are different. If you want to keep people employed, you’ve got to be competitive,” Kyle says. The prices on the boards don’t always reflect what locals will pay for fuel, especially when you take into account loyalty programmes.

Wyn Scott has become more and more noticeable to Richmond residents throughout the last week. The local woman, who has made her home outside the Ministry of Social Development in Richmond, started camping out on Queen Street with nothing but a sleeping bag last Monday. A week and a half later, a tent, cardboard signs, and shopping trolleys filled with belongings crowd the footpath outside the Ministry of Social Development and Te Piki Oranga. Wyn says that both tenants have asked her to leave. She won’t. She says that she is protesting to raise awareness around the lack of emergency housing for women. “There is no night shelter for women. There is women’s refuge, but there is no emergency housing for women who need somewhere to go at 3am.” Wyn says that she is not protesting the Ministry of Social Development or Te Piki Oranga.

Wyn Scott has spent the last week camping out on Queen Street in Richmond and says she is trying to raise awareness around the lack of homeless shelters for women in the region. Photo: Matt McCrorie. “There is no one there for homeless women.” Chair of Community Action Nelson, Mary Ellen O’Connor, says that emergency housing for homeless women is severely lacking. “There is nothing.” While there is a men’s shelter run by the Anglican Church in Nelson, there is no equivalent for women. “We have been trying for ages

to free up the Brook camp or the Tahuna camp – the Tahuna camp has been emergency housing in the past.” “The women’s centre in Nelson currently has two units. They are small, and women often have children with them.” Mary Ellen notes that Ma’s Place in Richmond was one of the few places that women with children could go to if they were in need of

emergency accommodation, but that the centre has since closed. “It seems to be very very difficult to make anything happen, it’s a bit of a gaping hole in our system.” Tasman District Council community relations manager, Chris Choat, said in a statement that the council is working with local support agencies to ‘resolve the situation.’

CARAMBA

Loobie’s Story began 11 years ago at Co-Founder & Designer Laurinda Sutcliffe’s dining room table, when a moment of nail biting serendipity saw her husband, Brent Sutcliffe, sell his menswear business at the very same time that Laurinda found herself let go from the fashion business that she had worked for as the creative director for twenty years. In the face of this adversity, the idea for Loobie’s Story started to form with a concept of original prints and co-ordinating hues; a collection that was feel-good, uplifting and feminine and that would take the wearer from day to night with a simple change of accessories. “I love understated glamour, beautiful prints, joyful colour, and natural fabrics” says Laurinda, “and at the same time, I care about the environment and I didn’t want to churn out collections that would last for only one season and then end up as landfill.” These initial sentiments still ring true today and form the cornerstone of brand values that resonate with loyal customers.

Richmond School celebrates Savannah Matt McCrorie While Nelson’s annual Mask Parade may have been cancelled this year due to Covid concerns, that didn’t stop Richmond School students from going it on their own. Students on Thursday last week threw a Savannahthemed mask parade to showcase their learning for the term. Students have spent the term working on

their ‘Rich Topic’ which focuses on a single theme, integrated across a range of subjects. Teacher Nicole Lams says that the integrated approach enables a great deal of collaboration and sharing experiences between students of different age groups and abilities. This year the rich topic was the Savannah, and the students learned about the

landscape, geography, flora, insects, and living conditions for people in the African Savannah. Teacher Nicole says that “the children have been totally engrossed in the facts and enquiry process as they hungrily hunt for more information about their own areas of fascination and make comparisons to their lives here in Richmond.” She says the school was

fortunate to have several families in the school community that have emigrated from African countries and have been able to share their experiences with their Kiwi peers and teachers. The term of learning about the Savannah ended with a Mask Parade and a classroom tour, where students were able to showcase what they had learned over the last term.

First in NZ for local coffee shop Jacqui Rawson Reporter

jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The new coffee shop on Queen Street has broken into the coffee shop market full of bubbliness, welcoming customers into a space fit for meetings, friendship or secret rendevous. Owners Haylie Nixon and Matt Redwood already have fantastic coffee and handmade delicious food. Powerful ingredients for those keen on coffee and seeking a great new local. But it may just be the friendly banter that sets this place apart. Haylie and Matt have put their personalities into the whole business, from the choices behind the modern decor and colouring to the way they heat their scones. Space

has been well thought through with nooks for different purposes. Window seating to gaze on Queen Street, comfy cushioned outdoor seating to feel the sun with a water bowl for the dogs. Areas for meetings and privacy at the back. Every detail has the customers in mind. And all this while in the throes of organising their own wedding which is happening soon. Haylie’s mum, who also works in the shop, passed on this information while saying she reckons Matt and Haylie like to keep themselves busy, or words to that effect that may or may not have included ‘cuckoo’. Call in and say hello. Go with a friend during happy hour and, with your two coffees, you’ll receive a cake of the day to share. Coffee on Queen, 225 Queen Street.

The Great Big Little Wedding Show on this weekend Jacqui Rawson Now in its fourth year, the Great Big Little Wedding Show has evolved into a well-organised event for those planning a wedding and needing some inspiration. “We’ve learned so much over the previous three years, and have adapted things in line with the learnings,” said event organiser Roger Cooke. Feedback is always sought from the public and exhibitors to guarantee what people want to see is what is there at the show. With up to 32 exhibitions, the show’s focus is on supporting lo-

cal businesses by having exhibitors from across the Nelson/Tasman region. It also ensures that no more than two of the same business type exhibits in the show. There is no charge to visit the show and there are goody bags for the first fifty people through the door. At 3pm a draw will be made from the names of every person through the door. At time of going to print the value of the prize was $1000 and will continue to increase until it’s drawn. A coffee cart will be outside the entrance. The show is on the 11th October, from 10am until 3pm, at Club Waimea in Lower Queen Street.

The Tasman District Council has announced its commitment to several significant infrastructure projects. The council will commit $34million towards shovel-ready and environmental projects in order to leverage millions of dollars in government funding to stimulate the Tasman economy to recover and rebuild from Covid-19. To this point, the government has committed $22.39million to Tasman projects, while still considering a further $12.29 million worth of projects for the Tasman District. The shovel-ready funding that has come from government will mean that major water infrastructure projects, flood resilience projects, as well as large scale envi-

ronmental projects, will be supported. While many of these projects were already planned by council over the next decade, funding will allow them to be done sooner and at a lower cost to the ratepayer. However, several new projects are able to be funded, including a new water main on Hill Street, linking Richmond’s two water zones to allow each zone to supply the other with water in the event of any supply disruption. The environmental projects, largely funded from the government’s Jobs for Nature package, include wilding conifer control, restoration of the Waimea Inlet and the Billion Trees plantings. “This funding will allow us to be proactive and better position our district as we implement

the major government policy changes that are focused on protecting our natural resources,” says Tasman mayor Tim King. To access the funding from central government, the council has had to commit to these projects and their timeframes now. All projects were either in the council’s long term plan for 2018-2028 that was consulted on with the community, or will be included in the long term plan for 2021-2031, that the council will present and adopt in 2021. Tim says that this means that the council has had to commit to these projects before community consultation, which will take place in March and April next year. Many of these projects will stimulate the regional economy, and create many new jobs across the Tasman region.

Rainbow’s ski season shortest on record

A lack of snow at the Rainbow Ski Field cut the number of days it was open, from an average of 72 to 23 this year. This is the shortest on record. Last week’s snow was about a week too late. The staff had already left and the field shut.

Covid mobile testing units operating in Nelson-Tasman region

Testing for Covid-19 is being offered to workers in the Nelson and Tasman region during the school holidays. Restaurant and bar staff, cleaning staff, bus and taxi drivers and airport workers in contact with people coming into the region are among those being tested. From September 25th to October 1st, there have been 265 tests performed.

Faulkner’s Bush – The man behind the name Marg Farrelly Charles Faulkner was the son of Thomas and Hannah Faulkner, and born about 1810 in England. He married Eliza Eleanor Mansell on 14 July 1833 at Sandford-onThames, Oxfordshire, England. They had two sons, Frederick Charles, born 1834, and Henry Long, born 1840, both born in Oxford. Charles was widowed in 1849. He and his sons were still living in Oxford at the time of the 1851 England census. Charles and his sons arrived in Dunedin, Otago, on board the ‘Gil Blas,’ which had sailed from Melbourne in 1855. Charles and other passengers were so appreciative of their ship’s captain that they wrote and signed a collective letter thanking him for transporting them safely to New Zealand Charles established himself at Waihola, south of Dunedin, where he farmed, and in 1862 he became the licensee of the Waihola Hotel. Son Henry was made postmaster at Waihola in February 1863. In August 1865, the hotel was totally destroyed by fire. Charles had gone to Dunedin, leaving his two sons in charge of the hotel. The noise of the fire woke them

The original Faulkner House, in Wakefield. Charles Faulkner, the son of Thomas and Hannah Faulkner, arrived in New Zealand in 1855. Charles and his family arrived in Wakefield in 1877, and Charles built their home on what is now known as Faulkner’s Bush, in Wakefield. The property was originally known as ‘Treeton Park.’ Photo: Supplied. at about four o’clock in the morning and they were only able to save a few items from the main building. Fortunately, the kitchen formed a detached building and they were able to save most of

the furniture and items from it. As the hotel was insured, Charles was able to rebuild. Charles put the whole of his property at Waihola up for sale in November 1873. The railway now

ran through his property, making the travel time from Dunedin less than an hour. The lake frontage was advertised as ‘desirable for villa residences, on account of its healthy posi-

tion, and the mild and bracing air from the lake.’ Charles arrived in Nelson and settled in the Wakefield area in 1877. He built his home on the site of what we know today as Faulkner’s Bush. The property was originally called ‘Treeton Park.’ The property then consisted of 46 acres as well as a dwelling house. Charles built a new house off the entrance from Pitfure Road. This large house was burnt to the ground in April 1893. The description given in the Colonist newspaper stated it was a ‘two storied commodious 10 to 12-roomed house.’ When the house was rebuilt, it was sited further back on the section near where the Scout Den currently sits. The family was well respected amongst the community. Faulkner’s Bush Reserve covers approximately 17 hectares. The bulk of the land was set aside as a reserve in 1961, with some later additions bringing it up to its current size. It can also be accessed from Hunt Terrace and Treeton Place. It is a popular grassy recreation area containing a lovely bush walk. Charles died 28 May 1888 aged 78 years. He was interred at St. John’s Cemetery, Edward Street, Wakefield.

Meet your

Candidates

West Coast/tasman

Damien O’Connor - laBoUr

i have spent the vast majority of my life in the West coast -tasman electorate. i was brought up on a dairy farm near Westport and i am now based in Upper Moutere. i consider myself privileged to have been able to live in what i consider to be the best parts of New Zealand, with access to nature on our doorstep. i have had numerous roles in farming and have owned and operated an adventure tourism business. i have never lost my passion for these industries and other primary sectors that will drive the future prosperity of our electorate. i believe that every New Zealander, including West coast and tasman residents, deserves the opportunity to realise their full potential through a sound education system, good health care and a community that is supportive of new and innovative solutions to the challenges that we face. together we can keep moving towards better-paid, sustainable jobs that promote industry growth and a more prosperous future for all people in our region.

Jack Collin - Social credit Jack collin is the candidate of Social credit in the election for West coast / tasman. Jack became involved with Social credit in 1968 and has been a party member from that time. Social credit has promoted a financial system using our own reserve Bank to be the source of the credit to replace the borrowing that Governments have done for many years. Before the arrival of covid19 the country owed 80billion dollars overseas, having to pay approx. $5billion a year in interest from taxpayer’s money collected, leaving a shortage of funds which should be spent on health services, solving the housing crisis, reducing the numbers living in poverty, or a multitude of other possibilities. Jack collin was brought up in the Hutt Valley and went to Victoria University studying a B.com. For 30 years Jack worked as a company accountant for various companies, then spent 20 years working as a wholesale company sales representative, travelling the South island calling on all sports shops. Jack is now retired, living in Westport. Jack has spent 50 years as a volunteer rowing coach, being a life member of four rowing clubs, having taught many successful rowers. Jack is a member of the Westport rotary club.

$5 Billion more every year

Jack Collin We’ll put in place an economic system that works for people and the planet

(currently wasted on interest) to spend on *health care *job creation *poverty reduction *1080 replacement *free GP and dentist visits if the government used its own bank (Reserve Bank)

Maureen Pugh - NatioNal When i entered Parliament in 2016 i was committed to helping West coasttasman, and all other smaller communities, to realise their full potential. this remains my priority. i am a strong advocate for issues which are at the heart of regional New Zealand. i raised my children on the West coast in a remote part of Westland. i understand the challenges isolated communities face and want to ensure they are never forgotten by the decisionmakers in Wellington. rural New Zealand is the powerhouse of this country and it’s important to me that we have policies that grow our economy and create jobs while responsibly managing our environment. delivering to our rural communities is a particular passion of mine. enjoying basic services like cellphone and internet, supporting early childhood centres, schools and health care facilities are for all, not just for those in the big cities. i believe that when we strengthen the backbone of NZ, the rest of the country will stand tall. the response to covid-19 has left Kiwis with a lot of uncertainty about what the future looks like for them, but not only about the debt levels we will face for at least 30 years. We need a plan that focuses on making sure the fiscal legacy we leave our children and grandchildren doesn’t hinder their future. through careful spending, supporting businesses that will deliver jobs to our communities and stimulate growth in our economy, we will reduce our debt. National has a plan that encourages Kiwis to get on with the job of re-building our economy, while making sure bureaucracy gets out of their way so they can thrive.

Vote Maureen

Pugh West Coast - Tasman

Now is not the time to be introducing expensive, time-consuming regulations for our farmers, nor is it the time to be talking about more holidays. it is time to help businesses get back on their feet so they can create jobs. i’ve always tackled issues head on and have a solid background of delivery. You can be assured of a strong advocate for your community when choosing me for your electorate representative in the 2020 election. Authorised by Maureen Pugh, 4 Bert Mercer Drive, Hokitika 7810.

Free entry to visit historic Willowbank Heritage Village Jacqui Rawson Reporter

jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The Willowbank Heritage Village is a life-like historic village, 1 km south of Wakefield. It takes visitors back in time as they meander along paths through the village past different periods of time represented in a variety of shops, a school, post office, shooting range, a hospital and a secret garden. “We have set this place up so everybody can come and see what has come before, in our history,” said founder Christie Grieder. That is also why there is no charge to visit the village. Christie didn’t want money to be the limiting factor behind people Founder, Christie Grieder, and volunteer Carol Leggett at Willowbank being able to enjoy what the Heritage Village’s open day on Sunday. village offers. Instead donation boxes are available for visitors wanting to contribute to the upkeep of the village. Christie is the woman behind the village, that has been built piece by piece through donations of timber, gadgets and the time of volunteers. Each building in the village is filled with all of the tools relevant to that business in times past. No amount of detail has been spared in making each location as real life as possible. “We wanted it to be as interactive as possible,” said Christie. So, as well as detail to look at, there are also many ways for visitors to get involved in the history. There are both children and adults costumes for visitors to dress up in and look the part. There is a school where visitors

can take a seat at a school desk and have a in-costume teacher run the lesson with a cane and a sense of strictness that ensures students follow her example. Visitors can also use the oldfashioned phones, placed in each location to call someone at another location with the hope someone will pick up for a chat. A movie theatre with handmade tickets to attend and a 10-minute silent movie. There’s a 100-year-old working coffee machine and homemade cakes to buy. You can also help yourself to tea and coffee or bring along your picnic to eat on the grounds. The next open day is on the 1st Sunday of December. Volunteers are always being sought by the village and for donations of any type please access their Facebook page.

Over 30 years of building beds For over 30 years I have been building beds. Using the best of materials from NZ and overseas I now build the best beds in NZ. Built for extreme comfort and built to last! I do not do anything else; I just build beds! I also used to repair all brands and I learnt very quickly what some of common faults and failings were on the big brands and strengthened and improved those on my beds. Now I confidently compete with the best in the world. And you would think our prices would be high? But you would be wrong. You see, we are part of a 20 shop NZ wide buying group for our bed parts. That is real discount power! But its also enables us to achieve very high quality in our bed components. And all that combines to deliver to you a bed that is so comfy, so well built, you will love it. As owner operator and bed builder that is my guarantee to you.

Opening night-trackman trOphy Left: The Three-Quarter Midget class has been going from strength to strength over the last few seasons, 23N Dylan Bensemann has shown good early form already. Right: The Thelin Construction New Zealand Sidecar Grand Prix will be hotly contested here this season. The 17N bike of Brent Steer and Wade Thorn will be keen to make their mark. Photos: BM Photography.

As Charles Dickens once wrote “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” and the same could be said about our last season here at the Milestone Homes Top of the South speedway. Our what was looking like a good season was abruptly put to a sudden stop by the Covid-19 pandemic and although you would need a crystal ball to see how this season pans out the Nelson Speedway Association will still forge ahead with what is to be another exciting season of top of the shelf speedway. If all goes to plan, we will be hosting four Speedway New Zealand titles this season with South Island championships for Three-Quarter Midgets on the

20th March and the ever impressive Sprintcars on the 13th February. Also, on the seasons programme are two New Zealand Grand Prix with the hard hitting Streetstocks on the 23rd January and the crazies of speedway, the sidecars, on the 5th and 6th of March (awaiting council approval for two-night meeting). Another big meeting we will be hosting this season is the PTS Superstock Stampede on the 12th December. after two failed attempts due to bad weather and the Covid-19 virus it’s third time lucky for the club to host this big Superstock event. One we hope will be successful enough to host on an annual basis. Another

meeting which will prick a few peoples interest is on the night of the Three-Quarter Midget South Island championship we will also play host to a Modified reunion put together by the Nelson Speedway Association and some of the retired modified drivers from a few years ago. The idea is to host a dinner for past and present Modified drivers on the Friday night then have the Modifieds race here the next night. At this staged we are hoping to have the 1NZ, 2NZ and 3NZ cars here along with visitors from the North Island as well as the South. Modified used to be strong here in Nelson so its going to be great to see them

Speedway back again. Demolition derbies are always popular with the fans during any season and this year we have two, plus the very popular 30 lap streetcar race. This race was introduced a few seasons back and it gives the people that have always wanted to have a go at speedway an opportunity to build a car to derby specifications and race it. This normally means

Opening night-trackman trOphy

that after the race you should still have a car that you can use for the derby on the 26th December. Also, this season we are introducing a corporate derby which will entice local businesses to put a team of cars together and try and win the prize money on offer and, of course, the all-important bragging rights that go with it. Along with all these big meetings are, of course, our crowd

favourites like the Trackman Trophy night (opening night this weekend 10th October) the Coca Cola Fireworks night on the 24th October, Hydraulink War of the Wings Sprintcars on the 28th November, The Child Cancer Foundation fundraising night on the 9th January which will feature the Ministock Mania and the CCF Trophy for the Quarter Midgets. Both are youth classes with the

Quarter Midgets being a new class that has been introduced here this season which gives kids from ages 8-15 years old a crack at speedway. As the whole meeting is based around kids and the Child Cancer Foundation the popular kids bike race will be on the programme this night as well. To cap off the season we will be running our Easter meeting on the 2nd April and we have also

added a big Sprintcar meeting to this season with the Sunshine Classic being held here on the 17th April. This, like the PTS Superstock Stampede, is a local promotion that we hope will tempt the big names in New Zealand Sprintcar racing here to challenge for the big prize money on offer and, if successful, will turn into an annual event. Good finds often discovered in local recycled clothing Elizabeth Bean A memory of staying with my brother in Singapore is his family putting all their rubbish into a chute in the hallway of their 23rd floor apartment which led to a skip the basement. There were limited attempts to reduce, reuse or recycle. My brother tells me that as most waste is burned and turned into electricity (providing just less than 2% of Singapore’s total electricity supply), they are actually recycling. I am dubious, but my interest was recently piqued by reading about a modular waste-to-energy system that deals with waste at source through a gasification process that turns it into decarbonised inert ash. The units are relatively small and waste is dealt with in batches by local communities and business. Our community generates a lot of waste, with 62,000 tonnes from Nelson/Tasman ending up in the landfill each year. Do you ever wonder where your waste goes? Most of us put our council bags out to be collected and off it goes to join a pile – more like a mountain – at the regional landfill at York Valley, just south of the Grampians. Tasman’s Eves Valley landfill closed in 2017. Out of sight and out of mind. A bit like my brother with their rubbish chute. We can divert some of our waste from

landfill through kerbside recycling and also there are a range of garden waste disposal options. About 85% of the plastics collected at kerbside (plastics 1, 2 and 5, but only if they are clean) can be recycled in New Zealand fortunately, but not much can be done with the others. This is where individual responsibility kicks in. Let’s take a look at what we’re throwing out. An audit of landfills in Nelson/Tasman showed that food, garden, plastic and timber waste comprised 55% of all landfill material. The Nelson/Tasman population is predicted to grow by up to 25,000 new residents by 2043, and unless we do something differently, this will lead to the production of more waste. To combat growing landfills, Singapore instituted their waste-to-energy system in the 1970s. Singapore is densely populated with 5.5 million people sharing 722 km2. Tasman has 55,000 people sharing 9,771 km2, so our economies of scale will be vastly different. Due to population growth and more waste being produced, Singapore needs to build another wasteto-energy plant every seven to 10 years. So they haven’t really solved the problem of reducing waste output. I will continue to promote that the easiest way to minimise waste is to avoid it in the first place. In my mind, ‘avoid’ will always be at the top of the waste management hierarchy.

Supporting Nelson’s role in the COVID-19 rebuild

Rachel Boyack

Rachel Boyack with Jacinda Ardern, Grant Robertson, Kris Faafoi and Rino Tirikatene.

Nelson needs a strong voice in Government as New Zealand continues to recover and rebuild from COVID-19. With local representation, Nelson can get the support it needs to thrive and make the most of opportunities. “I want Nelson to be a place of opportunity, so that young people can see a future in this region for them and their families,” Labour Nelson candidate Rachel Boyack says. Labour is committed to advocating for local businesses, and announced a $53.3 million package for projects in the top of

the South that will boost our economy and create new jobs, including $9.8 million for a new Slipway to support Nelson’s fishing, aquaculture and marine industries. Rachel Boyack successfully advocated for overseas vessels to be allowed to come into port Nelson during lockdown for repair work at Aimex. With a local Labour MP in Wellington at the Government table, we can make sure that Nelson has a strong voice that will back local businesses.

Improving Public Transport Labour is taking climate change seriously through unprecedented investment in public transport, walking, and cycling improvements. Under Labour, public transport investment has increased by 163 per cent, while investment in walking and cycling is up 227 per cent. In Nelson, the government has invested in new public transport routes in Richmond. Labour is using balanced transport investment to tackle long term issues like reducing emissions and easing congestion while creating jobs and boosting regional economies. Rachel wants to work with both councils to ensure continued investment in public transport and walking and cycling infrastructure to help ease Nelson’s transport and congestion issues. “I’ll seek support from central government for public transport, and cycling and walking initiatives,” Rachel says. Rachel supported the students who that presented a 1000 signature strong petition to Nelson City Council, asking for better public transport.

“I’ve long been a supporter of better public transport for Nelson, so it’s great to see young people like Vienna van Heeswyck making her voice heard,” Rachel says. –“We know there are lots of people who would use more public transport if it were more accessible and frequent.” Vienna van Heeswyck says public transport is important for young people. “Not every person wants to drive a car into town every day, or can for that matter,” Vienna says. “We need to have other more sustainable options to help our city be in step with what the planet needs.”

for Nelson

Advance voting started last weekend This election is your chance to vote for a candidate who can make a real difference for Nelson inside a Labour Government. Labour has a clear plan to create jobs and have workers ready to get the economy moving again, and I’ll make sure Nelson gets its share. I’ll use my voice in Government to support local businesses as we recover and rebuild from COVID-19. Better public transport, addressing climate change and cleaning up our waterways are other top priorities. I want every child to be able to swim in our waterways without risking getting sick, and I support our young people in their campaign to get better bus services. Nelson needs a seat at the table. Make your vote make a difference for Nelson. There’s still time to enrol. You can enrol and vote at the same time.

Let’s keep Nelson moving with a local Labour voice inside Government.

Rachel with Vienna van Heeswyck

Climate Change Front and Centre Labour is committed to tackling climate change, protecting our environment, and cleaning up our waterways. As we continue our COVID-19 recovery and rebuild, we’re going to invest in nature to support people into jobs now while protecting our environment for future generations. Labour passed the Zero Carbon Act with a target of netzero carbon emissions by 2050. We also banned single-use plastic bags, and we’re committed to phasing out even more single-use plastic. This year the Government announced $2.8 million for Nelson to clean up our waterways, including the Maitai River and the Waimea Inlet. This funding will create 44 jobs in the region. Labour is committed to cleaning up our waterways and making our rivers swimmable again. Plastic waste is a big issue for our environment. “Our local rivers and waterways are littered with plastic waste,“ says Rachel Boyack, who is on the Board of the Nelson Environment Centre.

Labour is taking the next step in removing plastic rubbish from our oceans and environment by phasing out single-use and hard to recycle plastics such as polystyrene packaging, cotton buds and some cups. Labour has established a $50 million dollar fund for businesses to develop alternatives here in New Zealand, creating opportunities for domestic manufacturing. Renewable energy is a top priority. Labour will bring forward the goal of 100 per cent renewable electricity generation by five years to 2030. It will accelerate the electrification of the transport and industrial sectors, invest in emerging technologies such as green hydrogen, and continue to make energy affordable for New Zealanders. “We’re planning now for New Zealand’s future energy needs to ensure New Zealand has stable, sustainable and affordable energy, while also protecting jobs and industries,” Rachel says. We want to hear your opinions on what matters to you and your community

Have your say and go in the draw to WIN a $50 Richmond Mall Voucher each month I remember waking up when I was a child of twelve years old and flipping open my Nokia brick to check the time. That was five years ago. Five years of change. I am now a 17-year-old girl who has succumbed to the torturous world that is social media. What I am still yet to discover, is how social media improves one’s quality of life. I would love to escape from social media’s hold, but seeing as the entire world is so very reliant on it, I am concerned for my relationships with people if I resist. Is the constant anxiety that is juiced from social media, ‘what’s going on?’ ‘why are they hanging out without me?’ really worth seeing what your friend had for breakfast. Mental health issues have well and truly made their mark in today’s society. Social media is heavily associated with increased depression. The change in technology has

happened expeditiously, as with depression rates. Coincidence? I think not. Social media is stirring our need for human interaction into screen-based contact. I have few concerns with the blue light portal that is social media. It’s taking the amount of emotion evoked from personal interaction. Things get lost in translation without human emotion, because not only do we explain with our words, we explain with body language, tone and expression. It’s an addiction. Addictions can come in many forms, positive and negative. Take drug addiction for example, the red eyes, the sleep deprivation, the lethargic mannerisms, zombie-like state, the disassociation, the confusion, the absentness – oh wait, that’s social media use. When we surround ourselves in social situations our body produces dopamine, known as ‘the happy drug.’ Social media platforms produce the

23

same chemical that is caused by gambling and recreational drugs. Obviously, synthetic drug use has drastically different effects than an addiction to social media, however it produces those same feelings of withdrawal when parted from the addiction in order to keep their consumers using their products. The constant reactions of ‘retweeting’ or ‘liking’ or ‘sharing’ has reprogrammed the brain where we get our sense of gratification and fulfilment, to trigger that same response as a person with a drug addiction getting their next boost. Social media is running and ruining our generation. It does have benefits such as checking the weather, the news, what’s going on in the world, but all these advantages can be sourced elsewhere such as some place called ‘Channel 1 News.’ - Brooke Motley, 17

I’ve often heard statements such as, I am so blessed to have 3 healthy children, a beautiful home. Or I am so blessed because “I just love my job.” We are blessed to live in a country of such comfort, freedom, and opportunity.” I myself feel blessed to be living here in Nelson Tasman Bays and serving God as a Minister of the Gospel. But what happens when you don’t feel so “blessed” in your current situation and circumstances that you find yourself in. e.g. My husband who is the breadwinner has just lost his job? How are we going to pay our mortgage let alone the bills? Are we no longer considered blessed? Or did I just happen to draw the short straw and miss out on the blessings that so many others seem to have

Successful weekend for Richmond football Stu Reid Two out of three ain’t bad! With all other football finished for 2020, focus on Saturday was on the senior cup finals hosted at Guppy and Neale Parks in Nelson. Richmond AFC had three teams competing in their respective cups and at 1pm the 4th division Tasman Auto Electrics Rich-

mond Bogans took on Mapua, a team they hadn’t been able to beat all season. However, locked at 1-1 and facing extra time, big centre back Kelvin Heiford went forward for a free kick and got his head on the cross to score and win the cup for the Bogans. At 3pm the Global Wings Travel Richmond Hornbills took on Tahuna in a fast-paced but scrappy 3rd Division Cup final.

Coming up against much larger and more physical opponents, the Hornbills battled as hard as they could and were rewarded with extra time in the match when they equalised late to finish regular time 2-2. Unfortunately they couldn’t maintain their momentum and Tahuna scored the winner to lift the cup 3-2. At the same time, the unbeaten Hothouse Creative Richmond

Foxes came up against a determined Nelson Suburbs side in the 1st division women’s Cup final. Suburbs scored early, only the 4th goal the Foxes had conceded all year, and things didn’t look quite as easy as they should have for the women’s league winners. Into the second half, however, they started to finally put passes together and the goals came, eventually going on to win the cup 4-1.

The Foxes finished their impressive season by winning the league and cup with 80 goals for, four against, 16 wins and no losses. This is the second year in a row that the side have finished the saeson without a loss. Richmond AFC celebrate the club’s season with their junior and senior prize-giving on Saturday October 17, before they begin the organisation for next season.

Unbeaten run comes to an end for Mako

Player of the year

Jonty Dine

Jacqui Rawson The night was an insight into the high calibre of lawn bowls players in the Nelson/Tasman region with big names in both New Zeland and internationally bowling part of the event. Five of the top New Zealand bowlers are from the Nelson/Tasman region. Jo Edwards, there to hand out the evening’s awards to junior players, is the winner of six world cup singles titles and three Commonwealth Games gold medals. She has also represented New Zealand 611 times, an impressive number in any sport. Jo has also been awarded the Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her service to lawn bowls. Bowls Nelson Chairman of the Board, Errol Beattie, was the MC for the night and organiser behind the 64 awards being handed out. The focus of the evening was Barbara McGregor from Wakefield who has won a staggering 38 titles since she picked up lawn bowling in 1988. On Friday night, alongside being named Player of the Year, Barbara also received five centre event trophies.

After a 15-game unbeaten run stretching back to 2018, the Tasman Mako have been defeated at the hands of an inspired North Harbour team. North Harbour coach Kieran Keane came back to haunt his old side with an historic 40-24 victory at Albany on Saturday. Little went right for the visiting Tasman team who were at one stage down to 13 men after being decimated at scrum time The Mako managed just three tries, two of them intercepts against the run of play, as they struggled to find any sort of attacking rhythm. Mitch Hunt and Bryn Gatland traded penalties to open the scoring, North Harbour taking a 6-3 lead with a strong breeze behind their backs. Then, with Harbour hot on attack, Mark Telea picked off a Gatland pass and went 90 metres untouched to score against his old side. The hosts enjoyed a sustained period of dominance and cashed in with winger Jared Page dotting down in the corner. Gatland struck his third penalty right on the siren as his side took a 16-10 lead into the break, the first time Tasman has trailed at halftime this season. Harbour would continue the momentum after the break,

its dominant scrum leading to both Isaac Salmon and Sam Matenga being sent to the bin. With Tasman under the pump, down to 13 and conceding another three points, Finlay Christie nabbed a second intercept and went in under the bar. The Mako survived the two-man disadvantage but North Harbour stretched its lead when Luteru Tolai rumbled over on the back of a surging rolling maul. A rare mistake at the back by David Havili handed Harbour a third try, to James Little, to effectively seal the result for his side. It was a frantic Mako team desperately searching to keep its record intact in the final ten, but errors plagued the defending champions. The nail was hammered into Tasman’s coffin on the brink of fulltime through replacement prop Teague McElroy as the hosts took maximum points from the stunning scalp. Captain Havili picked up a consolation try but the Mako had been well and truly out-played by a ruthlessly efficient Harbour outfit. Tasman maintains its spot atop the Premiership table with Auckland now trailing by just one point. Next weekend the Mako will host Bay of Plenty at Trafalgar Park in Nelson. Kick off 1.15pm.

Wild weather hampers regatta Staff Reporter It was a wild ride for both sailors and organisers at the 2020 Pic’s Peanut Butter Starling National Championship in Nelson last week. Rescheduled from April due to Covid-19, the event was on the line right up to the last minute with the latest Auckland Level 3. Then as, competitors arrived and

registered, they were told to keep masts down and tie down their boats. A vicious northerly front blew through overnight with gusts of 50 knots. Day one dawned with a 25-30 knot northerly and a sea state in The Cut that meant the race committee elected to set a course and race inside the harbour, making for grandstand viewing from the

shore. The next day saw the sea state flatten off and the sailors get out into the bay for two races. Local Noah Malpot achieving the top race result for a Nelson sailor with a sixth in conditions that suited his light weight. At the mid-way point, Naomi Ferrissey of Murray’s Bay YC in Auckland was leading the fleet. Day three brought bitterly cold

conditions. With the sailors halfway through the first race, the south-westerly kicked in hard causing capsize carnage and some busy times for the safety boat team. The race committee shortened the course and sent the sailors home. In the end, with three races in fantastic fresh conditions on the last day, the race committee com-

Macca Springer has become the first Waimea Combined player to win the UC Championship’s Philip McDonald Memorial Medal for most outstanding player in the competition. The talented fullback was a constant threat on attack, setting up numerous tries and scoring plenty himself, while also proving he had a big boot capable of getting Waimea out of trouble when needed. “I was pretty shocked when I first got told about winning it but I was also really honoured. “I felt like I was playing well, you can always improve but I just tried to give it everything each game. I knew at the start of the season I was going to have to step up and be a leader. I felt like I had more confidence this year. I believed I was capable of doing the job and I could create things for the team.” He says the win over St Bede’s was a highlight. “Everything went our way that day and everything came together well. “We had a dip in the middle of the season after we lost to Nelson College but we were able to pick up our heads and get
