Yankee Doodle day Richmond prepares for USA Eagles to land
As the Italians landed in Nelson, Richmond was finalising plans to welcome their opponents – the United States. The Italian rugby team is based in Nelson and training at Saxton Field for the duration of the Rugby World Cup, which kicks off on Friday, but in Richmond it is the Americans that
locals are looking forward to seeing, with one of its players a local lad and a couple of huge events planned to celebrate the Americans coming to town. The United States are in town for just one game, against Italy on September 27, and in the days before the big clash Richmond is set to party. On
Sunday, September 25 the Tasman Invitational Sevens is being held at Jubilee Park, the following day there will be an American-themed parade down Queen St, followed by a Block Party and on Tuesday, game day, a

“Yeah because it’s here in NZ I would like the All Blacks to win but it looks like Australia is going to do it. Robbie Deans has got it in for the NZRU.”
“Not particularly. We have tickets for the games in Nelson though and I’ll go to some of the events in the region.”
“Just a little bit. It’s not the same now that it’s gone professional. I’ll follow the results, and I hope the All Blacks have a good chance.”

Richmond prepares for USA Eagles to land FROM PAGE 1 a Tailgate Party is being held at the A&P Showgrounds. From that boot party, free buses will take spectators to Trafalgar Park and back again to help support the US team. Dozens of local community groups have put their hands up to assist in delivering an afternoon of pre-match entertainment as Richmond and the adopted American Community get ready for the Tailgate Party. Those going to the game are encouraged to take advantage of the Park n Ride service which will be operating out of venue. Park up at the show grounds and jump aboard a USA themed team bus for a uniquely styled
service to the game and back. Catching the Bus is the best option for getting to the game as car parking will be limited in the city. Park n Ride bus tickets can be purchased from the Richmond Mall information kiosk. The newly formed Richmond Men’s Shed will play a key role with this service, managing show ground car parking, along with greeting and collecting tickets as fans board the buses. Committee members from the Nelson A&P Association fulfill bus marshalling duties – travelling on the buses ensuring passengers are safe and in good song. The expertise of local Top Team games guru Hayden Bryant from Sport Tasman has been called upon to assist in designing an interactive rugby themed sporting challenges pro-
gram. A series of ‘have a go’ activity stations will test both physical and mental perseverance, with ASB Aquatic Centre Staff members on hand to encourage and support participants through the afternoon’s activities. Volunteers from Richmond Rotary will service the wine tent, pouring a selection of local Seifried wines to complement beer served up by the Sprig & Fern. The Tailgate Party also features a free facepainting service from a crew of young Waimea College artists, who have a catalogue of team colour designs to draw inspiration from. Acoustic rock covers band The Gypsy Pickers are the headline act, with rock-a-billy outfit The Krazy Kats supporting. Spot prizes will also be given out to the best dressed American and Italian supporter.

immigrant workers’ English not being to standard and a lack of men in the industry. “Mainly, the aged care sector is women and if you have an elderly gentleman living by himself why not a man helping him? But pay is a big drawback to that.” The key is making the industry seen in a better light she says.“I would like to see those carers given a professional status. At the moment they are looked down on like, ‘oh, is that all you do’. And yet the people that are in that area are there because they want to be. Now I think they should be looked at as professionals doing a job so someone
at school who would like to make a career choice out of it can go to polytech and make a decent wage.” She would like to see the government fund the first year of the train-ing while the rest goes to a student loan. Nelson Grey Power president Gordon Currie agrees with Pam and says while some parts of the industry do a very good job, others aren’t at the same standard. The meeting is being held at the Tasman District Council chambers on Friday September 16 from 1.30 to 3pm. For more informa-tion call 547 2457 or email nelsongreypower@xtra.co.nz.
Spring is in the fair Thousands flocked to the Appleby School Country Fair on Saturday as it kicked off spring with the biggest numbers in the gala’s history. All the regulars; wood chopping, helicopter rides, farm animals, Lego town, the haunted house and silent auction were again a huge hit, bringing in more than $40,000 to the school, says Appleby School principal Graham Avery. “We had our biggest year I think. It was massive really. All the stalls were chocker and going at full volume all day. It was just a beautiful day and the crowd came out.” A 25 percent increase on visitors was estimated by the school, for the first fair of the Spring. “The school grounds were absolutely full. It’s just a great day out,” he says. The money raised from the fair will go towards two major areas, the first subsidising all trips out of the school Ayla Watkins Whitehead, 5, with her lamb at the Appleby School and the second for special Country Fair, which raised more than $40,000. Hot on the heels of the New Zealand launch of the Hyundai Elantra comes news that the compact sedan has won the AutoPacific compact car Ideal Vehicle Award, as well as the Vehicle Satisfaction Award. AutoPacific based the 2011 Ideal Vehicle Award on 72,000 surveys completed by owners of new cars and light trucks in the United States in the first half of 2011. The Ideal Vehicle Award measures the expectations of owners and asks them to rate their vehicle across 15 different categories, ranging from power and acceleration to safety features and storage. “Owners are asked to rate each of the categories on how close they come to being “ideal” and responses are measured against how closely a vehicle meets the expectations of the customer,” says Hyundai New Zealand Chief Operating Officer, Tom Ruddenklau.
“Given the strong sales in New Zealand since the Elantra launch at Fieldays, and that it is currently Hyundai’s best seller globally, and not to mention it has been Canada’s best-selling passenger car for three months in a row, we think this car will continue to go from strength to strength. It combines the feel of a big car with the benefits of a compact car.” As well as picking up two AutoPacific Awards, the Elantra was also ranked number one out of eight models in the compact sedan category by US magazine Motor Trend. The Hyundai Elantra has a 5-star ANCAP safety rating and is one of the few compact vehicles in the segment with Vehicle Stability Management. AutoPacific (www.autopacific.com) is an automotive research and consulting firm which publishes a wide variety of syndicated studies on the automotive industry.

I have just been sent a copy of an article in your August 17 edition of ‘Waimea Weekly’ by some very good old Richmond mates. Fascinating reading re the old clinic and my father and mother. Jon Shearer, Qingdao, China. In reference to articles printed on the front pages of the Waimea Weekly over the last several weeks, I am surprised that Labour Party members Annette King and Maryan Street involved themselves in the debacle that is going on at Waimea Village. I would have thought they would have made a full investigation of the situation before making any decision to take the matter further. Also, in last week’s Letter

to the editor, referring to the attempted stoppage of medical supplies by chemists to Waimea residents is not true and never has been. There was an incident two years ago when the owner of Waimea Village spoke to a pharmacy delivery person for speeding in the 20kph limit! The supposed ban was checked out by a village resident and was told by the chemist there was no ban. There was however a ban on a retailer being invited to use the communal hall to sell their clothing. Too bad for the regular housie goes, who can’t use the hall that day, who look forward to winning a half dozen eggs or a chocolate bar, keep their minds alert and having a cup of tea afterwards. Yours faithfully J.R Oakes. Waimea Village.

Scottish restaraunt comes to Richmond Rob Roys Public House is the latest business venture opening in Nelson following the Christchurch earthquake. The Scottish bar and restaraunt has bought the lease to the Tasman District Council-owned former El Taverna building on Queen St. The original Rob Roys was torn down in April due to severe structural damage following the quake, but it’s owners are excited to be calling Richmond home. “We’ve been to Nelson a couple of times and fell in love with the El Taverna site. I think it’s what Richmond needs,” says owner Kristeen Guy. Kristeen and her husband Aaron Guy will be seeking applicants for around 15 jobs before opening late October. Haggis will be one notable inclusion on the menu and the restaraunt also hosts haggis ceremonies once a month to give locals a small taste of Scotland.

New chief steps up to the plate Phillip Rollo Twenty years on and serving his community is still a burning desire for new Brightwater Volunteer Fire Service chief Ross Stratford. Ross takes the reigns from the retiring Mark Donaldson, after previously holding the spot of force deputy. It was a proud moment for the Brightwater man who first joined the brigade when they were struggling for numbers and now leads a 20-strong force of volunteers. In 2010 the Brightwater force received 94 call outs and are currently sitting at a fraction over 60 for the year of 2011. “It’s a relatively busy fire service.” Being the chief means Ross will have more responsibility on the admin side and will work in a more liaison role in the community. “At a fire scene you’re no different to any of the other units. Being chief is more liaison work and it’s something I haven’t done before. You get a little bit more involved in the decision-making, and have the opportunity to have an input.” Ross says there is a certain amount of honour that comes with the role, but it’s not going to his head. “It’s a serious thing but I do enjoy it, you don’t do it for the pay. Sometimes you can have a really bad day at work and you go ‘I’m not going to fire service tonight’, well back when I wasn’t chief, and it’s the best thing you can do. It’s the
biggest relaxation and change of scene.” The Brightwater zone can take the brigade in to Hira and as far as Murchison, although he has had the odd trip to Marlborough for serious fires. “As the fire risk goes up the rural response enlarges. You’re better to send more gear than to get there and think we need more.” Ross says he is privlidged to be working alongside such a great team, and while he finds the fire fighting as hard work, he says the satisfaction of helping his community outweighs all the cons. “You’re with a group of people, you’re a team. None of it is individual and I’m extremely lucky to have the team I’ve got here. We can usually have a lot of fun, even if it’s quite serious.” The members of the brigade come from many different backgrounds.“It’s good because you get a lot of different skills outside of the actual fire training. You’ve got one guy who volunteers on the ambulance right through to truck drivers. That helps makes a team.”
UP THE RANKS: Ross Stratford began life as a fire chief last month, twenty years after first signing up with the Brightwater Volunteer Fire Service. Photo: Phillip Rollo. “The advantage of the rural fire service is the crew take ownership of it. When you work hard and buy something yourself,
you’re part of the reason that this unit is as strong as it is. You look after it much more if you’ve fundraised to pay for it.”

Museum photo mystery uncovered by home owner Ian Mortimer got the surprise of his life when he was reading the Waimea Weekly - his house was in it. Each week the Waimea Weekly runs glass plate photos provided by the Nelson Provincial Museum hoping readers will uncover information relating to the photos. But Ian was more surprised that no
one knew anything about it. “It was like it was a mystery, but how is it a mystery? It’s our house,” he says “I was actually at work working late and I thought I’d read it and saw it there thought ‘that’s our house.’ And I knew because I had been painting it and you sort of know.” Ian understands the house, on the Ap-

GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS: Garin College students and Young Enterprise Scheme entrants Georgia Goodman, 17, Brett Pomeroy, 16, Beth Hutt, 16, Jamal Stent, 17, and Bettina Coleman, 16, will have 220 of their rubber frisbee design stocked by BP. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Garin students score big with BP Five young Garin College businessmen and women will see a familiar sight on the shelves of the South Island’s BP service stations, following the announcement that 220 of their Young Enterprise Scheme product, Power Discs, will be stocked by the petrol giants. Power Discs are rubber frisbees made from used car tyres and are designed for animals and humans as a durable and cheap alternative to plastic frisbees. Along with the sense of accomplishment, more than $1100 will be deposited in to the company’s bank account, giving them a $1000 profit for the year, not bad considering the year-long enterprise scheme is still running. “Out of all the
products in New Zealand we got chosen, which is pretty cool because there’s so many teams,” says Georgia Goodman. “When we found out we thought 100 frisbees, but they’ve ordered 220, so we better get our act together.” BP, who have supported the programme for the past 18 years, selected five Lion Foundation Young Enterprise products national wide for BP retail outlets. YES runs throughout the year and gives business studies students a hands-on, real life experience at creating a business. They spent their own money and create their own profit. The regional awards night will be held on October 27 to announce the local winners.

Looking at Building? by Michael Reid
This is the first of a three part series on Building Today In The Nelson Region by Michael Reid of Michael Reid Ltd - Architectural Design.
Finding The Right Designer How do you find a Designer who is a good match for you? Not all Designers are the same, some specialise in commercial and industrial designs, others in urban work, some in rural buildings, some in heritage buildings and some in a combination of the above. Have a look at examples of work that a Designer has done, not every Designers’ style suits every clients needs. If possible speak to owners of the projects, how did the process work out for them? Talk to the Designer, most designers will be happy to discuss your project at concept stage and show you the sort of work they have done without obligation. Most Building Consent and Resource Consent issues can be anticipated and the Designers’ main job is to steer you through the design process so that the worry of the project is taken out for you. In the next in the series Michael Reid will discuss Finding the Right Section.

Kasey skates into NZ team
GO FIGURE: Kasey Murdoch has been selected for the World Junior Artistic Roller Skating Championships. Photo: Phillip Rollo. Despite competing in a different country, it will be familiar surroundings for New Zealand junior artistic roller skater Kasey Murdoch when she takes on the world for the second time, in November. The 16 year-old Waimea College student competed at the World Junior Artistic Roller Skating Championship in Portugal last year, but will be wheeling off to Brasilia, Brazil, a much more experienced competitor for the 2011 edition. Kasey finished 24th place last year, but has her eyes set on breaking in to the top 20. “I did alright, it was a good experience though and I had heaps of fun,” says Kasey. “I’m definitely looking at doing better this year because I’m in the same grade.” Kasey has been figure skating for 11 years, although it was a long time between her first and second skate on the rink. “My gran bought me some skates, just some cheap ones, and I asked mum if she could take me down here to learn to skate. So she took me down but didn’t take me back for a year because I was so bad.” But following some prolonged periods of nagging, Kasey got her wish to return to the rink and hasn’t looked back, competing against the best the world has to offer.
Kasey says she would not be where she is today without Mat Charles of Team Boxman Sport and her coach Pam Peters. Mat has eased the funding of Kasey’s overseas trips. “He has pretty much paid for everything for the last four years. He’s amazing and I’m so lucky to have him.” Kasey oftens travels to Palmerston North and Auckland for competitions but says the pinnacle of competing against the world’s best was definitely a career highlight. “I found that amazing, it was such an achievement. My goal was to goal this year so to go last year was just way more than I had hoped. It was so tough but I didn’t have any expectations.” But with that first taste of international competition, Kasey will be giving it her all this year and already has some inside info on her foreign competitors. “The Europeans and the Americans are so good so it will be very tough but I definitely have a better chance. In 2009 I went to Italy and I went to train with them so I know how they can do and how they train and how crazy good they are.” The scars and bruises are part and parcel of the sport too, with falls a common occurance. “You just have to get back up and try again.”

Congratulations
Waimea Netballers on an outstanding season
loved to have won back to back Premier titles their focus has been on the South Island Secondary Schools Tournament. It was touted on day one that Craighead, Columba and Waimea were the top three teams however only one was ever going to make it to the final as all three teams were on “the same side” of the draw. With a seven win, one loss record, Waimea finished 5th which was good enough to book a berth at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships in Napier next month. Mandy Whiting is at the helm of the Waimea 10A team, many of who she has coached since Intermediate. It is evident that Mandy takes great pride in her charges and the development of the team and individual skills. It will be the end of an era, as next year will a see a split as some will make the grade and gain selection in the A team. The 10As have talent from one end of the court to the other – Shaun Aindow has anchored the offensive end and has been well supported by Courtney Zwart and Brittani Harrington. There is an abundance
of talent in the mid court with Lucy Ingham, Breanna Whiting and Jessie Matthews – they display wonderful vision and more often than not, their timing is spot on. Gracie Roberts, Annie Eden and Emma Deighton are the defensive force, Gracie reads the game well to create turnover ball while Annie works the circle and is a competent ball carrier through court. Emma positions herself well to be a top rebounder. Waimea 10A have had a great season and there is only one more hurdle to surmount – the Grade 2 final against Prices Black on Saturday. The Waimea 9A girls have had an absolute dream season, they began in Collegiate 1 however it soon became evident that they were a class act and gained promotion to finish the season in Grade 4. Coach, Ann Wicken has an unbelievable group of ten girls, they have so much talent and versatility that most can play any position on the court – a coach’s dream or curse? Primarily Morgan Inch, Katie Ditzel, and Emily O’Connor

of natural talent, and they have potential for a big future. There were several games during the season that “everything clicked” and were virtually unstoppable. Ellie Gaging had a memorable season at goal attack, while she was ably supported by Emma Irvine who returned some commendable statistics. Kalyssa Rasmussen was a great wee utility, quite accustomed to any position.
Hana Tava and Amber Hampton supplied the drive through court and linked nicely to deliver a good supply to their shooters. Libby Wehner contributed well until injury put paid to her season. Michaela Kerr, Amalia Climo and Georgia Roden worked hard at the defensive end applying pressure to create the turnover. Good Luck Waimea 10A and 9A for your final.
Waimea College coaches are pictured with their daughters who all play for Waimea teams. From left are Eva and Ruby Jensen, Ann Wicken, Emily Jensen, Faye and Annie Eden, Kelsey, Mandy and Breanna Whiting. have been the shooters, they work the circle well and have returned amazing shooting statistics. Katie Thompson, Ruby Jensen and Holly Young are hard working mid courters who are likened to energiser bunnies, they just keep going and going. Spectators are often taken aback at Katie and Ruby’s speed and skill on the feed. The defensive unit of Georgia Davies and the two Hannahs, Davenhill and Taylor, along with Anika Paton are grafters, they have developed excellent skills and a mature understanding of the game. After taking the honours at the South Island Junior Tournament, Waimea 9A have room for another trophy and will play Richmond Sleepers in Saturday’s final. Ruby is also showing talent as an umpire and is being encouraged to take it further. Tasman NZ Regional Panel Convenor Andy Vincent believes Ruby has what it takes and will coach and mentor her during the off season and into 2012. Umpiring is a sport in its own right and could be an avenue to pursue for young players like Ruby. The Waimea Intermediate 8A team began their season in Junior 1 and after convincing wins were promoted to Collegiate 2. After playing some great netball in the second round they gained a further promotion to Collegiate 1. Coach, Erina Russ said the 8As have a lot

Tapawera Rugby Club celebrates 75 years Tapawera Rugby Club’s 75th Celebrations was a huge success by president Tony Firth’s standards as he was pleased to see all the invited people come along for the day as well as the community. There were a total of five rugby games that took part in Saturday’s celebrations. The Murchison Golden Oldies under the referee Peter Grant took on a Tapawera side that drew deep within the community for players and beyond the district to
participate. The Tapawera Golden Oldies “took to the rules” with both sides needed strong guidance by the referee, for safety the players. The final outcome was a 3 try draw. Peter was pleased to have the opportunity to referee under Golden Oldies rules, “it’s different.” He knew a few of the “older players as they played with my Dad, so it was a nostalgic occasion.” The youngest player on the Tapawera side was 42, to the oldest being 58, Peter Taylor who had the cleanest heels there. captain David Griffith says “the club strength was due to the community and those currently that wanted to be involved in the club.” Other games included the Tapawera Rippa Rugby team, the Under-9 team and a Country Combined team of Murchison and Tapawera player. The final game was between the Tapawera Senior 3rds who took on an Invitation Country team and lost with a dignified score of 30-17.

The Tasman Titans went down in Brightwater on Sunday, losing 3420 to Canterbury Under-20’s. Sam was a stand-out for the home side picking up a brace of tries while the impressive Phil Asi and Tewera Mihaere also dotted down. Despite an evenly fought match, errors crept in to the Titan’s game and were unable to gather any substantial amount of momentum. Sam scored his final try midway through the second spell to close the scores before Canterbury ran away with the game. Local people with local knowledge Founded in 1996 by the McKeown family, Trends Kitchens takes pride in bringing quality kitchens and joinery to South Island homes. Unlike franchise owned companies with a limited product range, Trends Kitchens can provide you a custom made kitchen produced by our own certified tradesmen, in our own factory. As the demand for this style of designer kitchen service spread around the South Island, so have Trends Kitchens showrooms and branches. Not long after we opened a branch in Nelson, we found people were coming all the way from Blenheim to see us. We were happy to create a site to accommodate our Blenheim clients, and our Renwick showroom was born. Today, you can walk into a Trends Kitchens showroom in Nelson, Blenheim, Cromwell or Christchurch, and meet with a local designer who can offer you a free measure and quote for the perfect kitchen to accompany your new home or renovation.
When you confirm your purchase with Trends Kitchens, you’re eligible for a no obligation interior design consultation from the team at ColourPlus, to compliment your new kitchen. Ask our friendly staff for details.
