Goats on highway DOC must act Jacqui Rawson Reporter
jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Goats can be seen in increasing numbers on either side of the highway between Murchison and the turn off to Westport at O’Sullivan’s Bridge, and are causing serious concerns for motorists. The problem has been ongoing for a number of years, however the calmness of the recent lockdown has encouraged the goats to regularly cross the state highway and go down to the river in search of food. “Goats traditionally head down to lower ground in winter,” says Murchison police officer Matthew Elliot. Lockdown has exacerbated the issue according to Matthew and the goats have gained the confidence to come down to the road due to the infrequency of cars using the road. “The Department of Conservation (DOC) and the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) have combined resources and are having discussions regarding pest control,” says Matthew. Locals have been vocal about their concern, one says that he is shocked with the apparent inability for DOC, NZTA and the Tasman District Council to work together to make the highway safe. Two local business owners who spoke to the

The art of glassblowing in Appleby fRoM PAGE 1 for their work, and it takes more than creativity alone to produce the standard required to meet that praise. “Glassblowing is technically difficult and has a life of its own,” says Ola. They have a passion for what they do, continually drawing on inspiration sourced from within themselves or what they see and feel around them. Colour, light, forms and lines are all evident in each individual piece of art. Their unique designs take on many forms; wine goblets in multiple shades, vases bursting with colour, glass jewellery and some wonderfully bright-coloured paper-weights. For an insight into how glassblowing actually happens you can watch the demonstrations which happen most days at the studio on Landsdowne Road in Appleby.
Goats on highway - DOC must act fRoM PAGE 1 Waimea Weekly described recent incidents. One businesses owner was forced to drive off the road at a high speed after nearly hitting a goat on the highway. His vehicle was written off. Another business owner towing a trailer, had to take evasive action to miss several goats, believing he was going to roll the vehicle. These are only two of many incidents in recent months. Locals believe that the only way that the problem can be resolved is a controlled cull. Methods such as poison are ineffective against goats. Frances Adank, media manager NZTA says, “Normally this type of job is the responsibility of the Tasman District’s animal control team.” In response to concerns, Nelson Lakes District DOC operations manager John Wotherspoon said the department is currently helping Fulton Hogan with a plan to cull goats to reduce their numbers on the hills above the state highway west of Murchison.
Goats grazing on the highway between Murchison and the Westport turnoff. Photo: Steve Page. “This should see less goats browsing along the highway edges and being a risk to motorists as they wander onto the road. “ Meanwhile, the goats keep roaming so take
even more care than usual on that section of road. Shooters are urged to not take matters into their own hands, as it is illegal to shoot from or across a state highway.

Quieter streets for Richmond Jacqui Rawson Reporter
jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) has long had an aim to make New Zealand’s streets safer and more enjoyable. Feedback resulting from a survey conducted during lockdown has further highlighted that this type of change is the reality people want to see. Less traffic noise and an environment where residents can be safely active on their streets. The Tasman District Council has a project underway to trial ways that will provide the best solution towards making these
changes happen. The area of Richmond that encompasses all the streets within the boundaries of, and including, Croucher, Talbot, D’Arcy and Salisbury Road will be the focus of the project. “What we want to do with this trial project is to use a co-design process to find the right solution,” says Jamie McPherson, transportation manager at Tasman District Council. That means engaging the help of the community. The council are planning different ways to involve local residents. The council has some initial ideas which could involve creating more space for residents
to enjoy, making sections of the road narrower, introducing road-calming measures or closing one end of the road. They’re only ideas at this stage, first, the council will seek the community’s input. Together, whatever solution the council and community come up with will be a trial made up of temporary measures. “Feedback from the people who live on these streets is hugely important,” says Jamie. Funding for this project has already been received by the TDC from the Waka Kotahi/ NZ Transport Agency as part of their Innovating Streets for People pilot fund.

Richmond is continuing to grow, and a large scale new commercial laundry facility will bring in more jobs. Local construction firm Coman Construction is developing a significant laundry facility for commercial laundry company Alsco, on Estuary Place off Lower Queen Street. Managing director of Coman Construction, Ben Coman, says that investment is needed going forward. “This is exactly the sort of development that the region needs, and I am delighted to have worked with Alsco to realise the investment and the employment that it brings to the region.. The project is one of a number that Coman Construction are completing within the subdivision and the public can expect to see increased activity within Estuary Place as several projects are due to commence. The development will see an investment of around $10 million

Photo: Matt McCrorie. dollars in the region. The new laundry facility, which will be one of the largest in the country, will process 45 tonnes of laundry a week. The new facility will also mean new jobs for the region, creating employment for around 45 people. The facility is also a boost in jobs
for the construction centre, with 25 Coman construction employees and subcontractors on site daily. Alsco, which has been operating since 1889, is also making an effort to reduce its carbon footprint. Relocating a wood pellet boiler from Nelson, the new facility in
Richmond will have the lowest carbon footprint across the Alsco group. The innovative new site will also feature a reduction in water resources from other facilities. While other Alsco plants use 22 litres of water per kg of Laundry, the new facility will need only 6 litres.
The Lower Queen Street area in Richmond has seen rapid expansion over the last few years with plenty more to come. Several stages of the 482-lot Richmond West development, called The Meadows, have been released over the last year. This follows the Fields, the adjacent 71 lot development, along with the Arvida Lifestyle Village being developed. Over 3000 people are expected to live in Richmond West. It was also announced last year that a cinema complex was being developed in Richmond West by Gibbons Construction, as well as various other commercial ventures like cafes and restaurants, along with the potential for office spaces. A 70-metre-long, two-lane vehicle and pedestrian/cyclist bridge will also be built across Borck Creek in Richmond West, which will connect the two sides of the development. The bridge was planned for 20212022, but has been fast-tracked by the Tasman District Council, and is budgeted to $1.9 million overall.

David Croy has to clean his home and Bed and Breakfast business multiple times a day, thanks to the dust clouds, behind, from a neighbouring quarry. Photo: Matt McCrorie.
Appleby resident chokes on dust Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
An Appleby business owner says that hearing about the increased stockpiles of shingle off Appleby Highway has struck a particular nerve. David Croy owns and operates the Travellers Rest Inn on Appleby Highway, and says that while it is great to see increased development, local residents are having to live with the unpleasant side effects. “On a windy day, it’s not a very pleasant place to be,” says David. He says the amount of dust and grit that gets carried by the wind into his home and business is ‘hugely demoralising.’ “Our home is covered with dust on every surface. On a
bad day, the dust is horrific.” “If we get a really windy day, when the trucks are coming and going and it’s all being processed, standing outside you feel the dust in your throat.” David describes the pain that dust can cause not only on his life, but the impact it can have on his small business. David describes spending a whole day cleaning between guests leaving in the morning and new guests arriving in the afternoon, but his hard work was in vain. Returning home at 3pm, just a few hours shy of his guests arriving, David had to clean the entire house again. In the 30 minutes that he had been out, the wind had picked up, and carried a ‘tidal wave’ of dust from the neighbouring quarry. “We are running a business,
and it can be really hard when you have to clean twice in one day. That happens pretty regularly.” David is well aware that he chose to live there, but feels that there should be some effort made by local contractors to control their air pollution, when the stockpiles are so large. “We appreciate it is a reality of the area we are in, but I think we would like to see at least some sort of effort to minimize it.” Sprinklers would go a long way towards minimising the pain felt by locals like David and his business. “I understand that it is a reality that they’re never going to get rid of, but if they could do something to minimize it is all the neighbours expect.”

Boxes of Lego for every classroom Jacqui Rawson Reporter
jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Lego, a well-known building block toy, has become a symbol for creativity and community spirit for Brightwater School. Students have used it to help win an award and, thanks to a group of resourceful dads, Lego is now available to every student within the school. “We were a group of dads who started getting together once a month … we decided to use the time to come up with ideas of how to help out the community,” says Kimble Rawson, Brightwater Fathers Group. The group of dads have a direct link to the school. All 12 of them either have a child attending, going to attend or has attended the school. So, it was deemed appropriate that the first part of the community to be supported was the school. The result of a quiz night in which they raised $860 was gifted to Brightwater School along with some further donations which brought the total up to $1000. It was then up to Brightwater School to decide how they were going to use the proceeds. They chose Lego so all 14 classrooms could have access to a box

There was another side to the Lego story which came down to creativity. “Our students helped Brightwater win a street design award run throughout New Zealand,” says Todd Brodie, vice-principal of Brightwater School. Living Streets Aotearoa runs a

One of the categories is School Projects of which Brightwater Consultation and the students from Brightwater school were the winners. Eat the food, and then the bowl! Matt McCrorie
Network Tasman increases discounts to consumers
Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
A group of Waimea College business studies students are on a mission to reduce waste, and they’ve developed a delicious plan to do it. Jack McCormick, Matthew Winch and Sam Burke are the three students behind ‘Edibowl.’ The project has seen the three young business students, who are taking part in the Lion Foundation Young Entrepreneur scheme, create an edible dessert bowl in an effort to reduce the waste created by single-use products, like plastic bowls. “When you get an ice cream, you eat the cone, so we thought, why can’t you eat dessert out of an edible bowl,” says Jack. While only 16, Jack is no stranger to innovation. For a school project last year he designed and built an e-bike from scratch. Jack says that concern for the environment was one of the key factors that led to the development of their Edibowl product, as a part of their Business Studies year-long project. “As young people we are really concerned about the environment, the whole idea is to stop single use products from entering landfill and harming the environment.”
Network Tasman’s consumers will receive a larger than usual discount credit on their July power bill.
Year 11 Waimea College student Jack McCormick and his ‘Edibowls’. Photo: Matt McCrorie. Product development meant a lot of time in the kitchen. The bowls are made using a biscuit recipe, but it took a lot of trial and error to finally get it right. “We spent a lot of time baking and perfecting our recipe so that ice cream can stay in it for an extended amount of time without it getting soggy.” Jack says that there has been a lot of learning along the way. “We have had to create a business and marketing plan, come up with a process of sales and
finance, as well as developing the product.” As a part of their assignment, the students will review how things went at the end of the year. And if edible bowls seem too good to be true, you’re in luck. The young entrepreneurs are inviting people to give their bowls a go. They’ll be selling desserts in their edible bowls at the Car Boot Market at the Richmond Baptist Church on July 25.

Network Tasman has announced that it is bringing forward the first of the two discounts it pays consumers each year from October to July. In addition we will also increase the discount payable to all consumers this July to return the previously advised 4% line increase. We are very aware of the impact COVID-19 is having on the Nelson Tasman region and recognise that all of our consumers are affected by the pandemic. We are pleased to be able to increase and bring forward our discount payment during this challenging time. We had decided, before the COVID-19 pandemic, to increase our lines charges by 4% to reflect an increase in our costs. Given the difficult economic conditions, we think we are better positioned to absorb these costs than our consumers. Accordingly, we have decided to return this price increase to our consumers. Bringing forward and increasing our existing discount payment is the quickest and most direct way to offset this price increase. The total value of the discount paid in July will be increased by $1 million and will bring the total paid to $6.9 million. A second discount will be paid to consumers connected to the Network Tasman network in April next year. Further information on discounts

Local College takes most wins for acting awards Matt McCrorie
Twenty-two teams from the Nelson Tasman region took part in this year’s festival, which, due to the Covid-19 pandemic moved online. The festival was scheduled for April 4, but was canned due to lockdown restrictions.
Rather than performing onstage, students recorded videos of themselves performing and sent them in to be assessed. For Waimea College, the change in format didn’t mean a change in hard work, with the school taking home 14 awards, including Best

Volunteers needed to strengthen services Sara Hollyman Reporter

A local ambulance is now being run solely by volunteers, meaning St John can now help more people across the region. The introduction of a doublecrewed staffing initiative has allowed St John to send two paid staff members on callouts, instead of relying on a volunteer to buddy with paid staff. Instead of adding a third person to callouts, the volunteers seized the opportunity to add another resource to the team, by manning their own ambulance. Nelson Bays territory manager, Anne-Maree Harris, says it’s been fantastic to give the volunteers the extra resource and get them on the roster. “Normally they’ve always been one paid officer paired with one volunteer, but we’ve transitioned into two volunteers so that means one of them needs to be the clinical
lead.” Before the initiative rollout, volunteers were locked in to a 12-hour shift, something Anne-Maree says is not practical for many people. “The work-life balance is very important and, if you add in a volunteer component to that, people are busy, so this allows that needed flexibility.” She says the change has also meant acknowledging the skillset that the volunteers have and saying, “you can do this”. John Wallace-Thexton has been a volunteer first responder for eight years and enjoys being able to get out and support sports matches and events. “I was out at my son’s rugby game one day and somebody got injured. Nobody knew what they were doing and I thought ‘well, I know first aid but now I just want to be able to have some kit and go out there and do something’, so I signed up.” The extra ambulance has meant that the volunteer team can now get out to more community events.

Just a thought... Sage Harris Whakatū Presbyterian Church It seems there is this never-ending onslaught of terrible news article after terrible news article. Our facebook, instagram and twitter feeds (I’m too old to say if it’s happening on Tik Tok) is full of anger, hurt and hatred, often hidden in the name of justice or free speech, or sometimes not even hidden at all. But the reality is there is a lot of hurt and at some point we as a nation, and as a world, will need to mend, because we cannot live in hurt forever. Healing is a complicated process, especially when there has been traumatic event after traumatic event for which there doesn’t seem to be any letting up in the future. A famous African/American author, Toni Morrison, once wrote this about healing a civilisation when it finds itself in a terrible place: “This is precisely the time when artists go to work. There’s not time for despair, no place for self pity, no need for silence, no room for fear. We speak, we write, we do languages. This is how civilizations heal.” This is typically most obvious
through music. We only have to look at Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Dave Dobbyn, U2, and many more to find those of creativity, of artistry, using their art to help healing to take place. It’s the role many of us find ourselves in and there is a responsibility to be a part of the healing. It’s also important to dismiss the hurts that are happening, because to deny pain and anger at injustice isn’t helping healing but encouraging continuing oppression. As a Christian pastor I see this as an integral part of my role. The Bible is full of life, it’s full of freedom from oppression, it’s full of poetry and songs that help civilisations heal. God understands that the healing of the heart takes more than just a pat on the shoulder. It’s why we have creativity, because we are made in the image of a creative God. Contrary to how the bible and God have been used in the past, God is in the business of reconciliation, of healing, of making things good. My encouragement is that we use our gifts of creativity to continue to do the work of healing our civilisation in line with God. God Bless

Have your say and go in the draw to WIN a $50 Richmond Mall Voucher each month Under this government’s proposed biodiversity policy, a lone cabbage tree (or any native plant) standing in a paddock can be classified as a Significant Natural Area (SNA). My understanding is that the Department of Conservation wants 100 metre zones of exclusion surrounding SNAs that preclude existing land use. This alone is financially damaging, if not devastating, prospect for market gardens, orchards and farms affected. But as well, the zones of exclusion will not respect property boundaries and will be extended every few years. The result will be a needless loss of exportable product, businesses, and jobs. Without the buffer of tourism, the social and economic cost will be more quickly felt in urban centres. Instead of legislating to increase the land area of native plants, the effective means of improving biodiversity, as well as being socially and economically viable, is to do comprehensive pest control. Tasman District Council will have to employ more staff to monitor and assess SNAs and zones of exclusion. Ecologists will have to be employed by TDC to perform the detailed and time-consuming task of monitoring native fauna, not just birds. In order to account for approximately 10 per cent of Tasman’s urban areas TDC will have to plant hectares of native plants, which may require the purchase of food-producing land. Not only will this biodiversity policy impact negatively on the Tasman economy, but how many more millions of dollars will Tasman ratepayers pay in increased rates? Tracy Palmer, Wakefield
The Greens think a fair society is one where they take tax money off whoever is deemed to have enough and give it to those they think might need more. No doubt those who have sacrificed years to study and the costs and debt in doing so, in order to enhance their work and income prospects, wouldn’t think that was fair. Since the gst was introduced, it has increased from its initial 10% to 12 ½% to 15%, with no downward movement of income taxes to compensate. Now, in addition to the Green’s call for a wealth tax, they would increase the marginal rates to 37% and 42%, meaning that effective tax rates, including gst, would be over 50% on reasonably modest incomes over $100,000. It’s certain that for many people the idea of living off Marama’s taxpayer-funded $325 per week is more attractive than finding a job and being paid not much more. These naïve politicians believe that dumping more taxpayer money on to the needy will solve the perceived hardship problem.
waimeaweekly and www.waimeaweekly.co.nz
So the answer would be to find out how the beneficiaries are disposing of their incomes and try to educate on thrift and budgeting and eliminating wasteful spending. Increased welfare will never solve the problem and closing the gap between welfare and work incomes means higher taxes and less incentive to work. You have to wonder how such thinking and policies got its advocates as far as a position in the most important business in the land. Certainly only by a system that appoints rather than elects candidates. Steve Page is concerned about the passive public reaction to the likes of what Davidson and the Green’s want to do. I agree, and would like to know more about what people really think. We do seem to be apathetic about lots of important issues. Perhaps a feeling of helplessness and being unable to influence people’s thinking, plus a hope that there’s enough sanity around that these ideas won’t get any traction. Graham Venning

Managing director Steve Page got it all wrong. Last week Steve Page published an article in the Waimea Weekly titled ‘Village Idiots are Green.’ Although anyone is entitled to have an opinion, Steve, as the managing director of the Waimea Weekly, should be the first to know to get his facts correct. Without analysing the whole article, which clearly has a huge bias, just one simple observation that shows Steve has got it wrong. He states that if you own a property with a value over $1million you will be ‘slammed’ with $10,000 a year. This is wrong. You will only be taxed 1% for a value over $1,000,000 per person. If a property is owned by more than 1 person the asset value is split. If a couple of two owns a house of $2,000,000, they will pay nothing. It is also clear that Steve doesn’t give a toss about people hardly surviving in our country. Get your fact rights Steve, and show some kindness too! Jan Heijs

Historic church saved by Quinney’s Matt McCrorie Popular camping park Quinney’s Bush has taken on the historic neighbouring St. George’s Church, and is currently undertaking a huge landscaping project to restore the gardens and natural surroundings of the church. The church, which was originally built in 1892, was the first Anglican Church in the rural area. It was sold by the Anglican Diocese towards the end of last year, to neighbouring Quinney’s Bush. Last year the diocese approached the community to try and come up with ideas with what to do with the old, historic building, which was seldom used. That’s when Mark Quinney knew he had to do something. “I thought, we can’t just let it rot. We have to look after it and look after the graves.” As well as being an important historic site and a listed as a Category 2 Historic Site under heritage New Zealand, the church also holds family significance for Mark and the Quinney family. “My grandparents are buried there, my parents are buried there, and I’ll be buried there,”

The historic St. George’s Church in Motupiko has been brought by neighbouring Quinney’s Bush, and will be available for use during the summer camping season. Photo: Steve Page. he says. It’s not just about his parents and grandparents, the Quinney family has a long association with the neighbouring church. The Brewertons, who the Quinney family is related to through marriage, donated land for the church to be built on. Stead Ellis was entrusted with the design of the church, and the timber used in the building was bought from a local supplier – the Quinney Brothers, of which Mark is a direct descendant. Now, Mark is on a mission to restore the gardens and landscape of the church to
their former glory. “It was really overgrown, covered in blackberries, so we’ve cleared all the rubbish away.” Landscaping that is currently underway will see new fences built around the church, with new trees planted as well as old trees that have been salvaged. The original church gates are also being restored. “It’s a piece of local history. It’s been around for over 100 years, and I’m hoping it will be a focal point for the area.” Mark says that while there won’t be regular services at the church, locals and visitors will be welcome to use the space.

Huffam – artist, farmer, retailer Dianne Scott Timotheus Blake Huffam was born 14 Jun, 1849 in Hampshire. His father Timothy was a brewer and with his wife Catherine had 5 children. By 1862 the family were living in Somerset, but moved to Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Sadly Timotheus’ mother passed away soon after the family arrived, as did his baby sister, culminating in the family emigrating to New Zealand to search for a new life. They departed Gravesend on 10th December 1868 on the barque “Fanny”, and arrived in Nelson on 19th of April 1869, a 130-day voyage. They arrived the same day as H.M.S. Galatea commanded by the Duke of Edinburgh, son of Queen Victoria, so Nelson was abuzz with celebrations. On 23rd April the family hired a cottage near the Raglan Brewery on Trafalgar Square, for which they paid 8 shillings a week. They soon leased a 50 hectare block at Bark Bay, and moved there to take advantage of the timber that clothed the hills behind. There they stayed for sixteen

Photos: Supplied. years and old settlers of Motueka recalled the visits of the Huffam long-boat to that port, with the four Huffam boys at the oars and the father in the stern sheets, rowing as if in procession at a Cowes regatta. Records show Timotheus marrying Jane Jacobsen in June 1885 in Nelson and settling in Cambria Street. The newly-wed couple shared a common love of painting.
Over many years, Timotheus’ paintings were exhibited at the Suter Gallery in Nelson. Timotheus and Jane went on to have five children together. Timotheus, usually called T. Blake Huffam, opened a business in Nelson and by 1889 was advertising in the Colonist that, ‘Huffam’s of Hardy Street’ was the place for toys and others goods. He was also for many years a music and piano seller until he sold
out to Chas Begg and Co. He was also one of the people responsible to the formation of the Nelson School of Music, and had a heavy involvement in the arts throughout his entire life. Timotheus then opened another store in Trafalgar Street. In 1901 the residents of Nelson had been mystified by oblong shapes that resembled air-ships. Some regarded them as omens and wanted to know if the Rus-
sians, Boers or Chinese had made an up-to-date invasion of the colony. It was found that the strange looking objects were merely box kites, imported by Mr Huffam and flown by him for advertisement and amusement. At around 1909 he sold his Trafalgar Street shop and went to live on his farm at Salisbury Road Richmond, where he took a keen interest in the Jersey breed of cattle and was the first secretary of the Nelson Jersey Cattle Breeders Club. In 1932 his wife Jane died, and on 4 October 1939 Timotheous followed, aged 90. In many ways he was a law unto himself, both in his mode of living, and his worldly needs. His mind was always receptive and the arts, particularly music and painting, claimed much of his attention, as seen in his lifelong love of painting and his involvement with music. The late Mr. Huffam was a great admirer of Charles Dickens, and there was an interesting family tie with the great author for an uncle of his was godfather to Dickens, who had the Huffam name incorporated in his own – Charles John Huffam Dickens.

Tasman Golf has designed a programme to introduce golf to schoolchildren and demonstrate what a fun activity it can be. The hope for the programme is to drum up enthusiasm for the sport across all age groups, including the younger generation. “Golf does tend to have an image of being an older person’s game but we’re trying to change that,” says Nick Loach, who is the executive officer at Tasman Golf. Nick, a former pro golfer, is a qualified golf instructor having completed his New Zealand Apprenticeship with the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) which is linked to Skills Active Aotearoa and their coaches and instructors’ programme. He wanted to use his skills for the betterment of the game by providing that initial contact with it. The Tasman Golf initiative means children who have never thought of golf before, let alone touched a golf club, now have the chance to get one in their hands and see what it can do. Last week students from Brightwater School ventured out to the Totaradale golf course in Wakefield to learn from Nick himself. Students spent the day learning valuable skills and mastering the basics of the game. The Tasman Golf initiative provides the opportunity for the children to see the games potential for fun and competition. In doing so they might even discover they can make that ball fly! Nick was a seven day a week soccer player when he was younger,
Nelson Matters
Last week I made important progress in getting justice for victims of crime by offenders found insane. The driver for this change has been two very brave Nelson constituents, Wendy Hamer and Sarah Preece, both who have been to hell and back. Wendy was the victim of an attempted murder while working as a mental health nurse. The patient punched, kicked, stabbed and poured boiling water over her while openly proclaiming he would get off on an insanity plea. He did and was sent for psychiatric care in Christchurch. The law denied Wendy any victim’s rights such as being consulted or notified
on his release. He soon returned to Nelson, terrifying Wendy in a chance encounter at a supermarket. Wendy came to me for help over the chilling case and we organised “Wendy’s Petition” demanding change. Sarah Preece was violently raped in her Brook Valley home. The West Coast man had sought mental health help at Nelson Hospital’s emergency department, but walked out after hours of inattention. Sarah was a random victim who was subjected to a horrendous physical and sexual assault. His successful insanity plea meant Sarah had no legal right to a Victim Impact Statement nor any say
on the conditions of his release. A bizarre twist is the offender was entitled to Sarah’s personal health records but she could not access his on privacy grounds. The system wrongly favours the rights of offenders over victims. The number of defendants pleading insanity nationwide has soared from four in 2000 to now over 40 per year. There has been 38 cases involving murder or manslaughter since 2000 where the attacker has been not guilty by way of insanity. One of those cases was the killing of Colin Moyle by a paranoid schizophrenic who attacked him with boiling water, beat him with a shovel, poured petrol over him
but he preferred the freedom that golf allowed. He enjoyed that he could play where ever he wanted, with whoever he liked, and whenever he liked. Now he’s enjoying passing on the knowledge that change can be good to students, and that there are options out there they might not have considered that are open to them. To start with, Nick and Tasman Golf visited the schools around the region and got children involved with golf, teaching them the basics and getting students engaged with the game, a game many of them may never have had any contact with. Over a two-year period, they visited some twenty schools around the region, introducing the basic skills of golf to around 5000 children. Since then the programme has gained some real momentumn. Now Nick and Tasman Golf are running the programmes at the Totaradale Golf Club, Wakefield and Waahi Taakaro Golf Club, Maitai Valley. Students get the chance to have an expedition away from school, which is always a highlight. But on top of that, young students get to experience for themselves the delight that is a golf course in the middle of a winter’s day in the Tasman region. There’re plenty of golf players from the golf courses that volunteer their time to join with Nick in assisting the children with those all-important first instructions on how to make a connection between the club with the ball. And if not actually making that connection, just having a great time giving it a go anyway.
544 Waimea Road, Nelson
and sadistically watched him burn to death. Colin’s brother, Graeme Moyle, was appalled at the denial of his families’ rights as victims and has campaigned for reform through his Taupo National MP, Louise Upton. I have been working with Louise on these law changes. The Rights of Victims of Insane Offenders Bill introduced to Parliament last Thursday makes three changes. It amends the Crimes Act from “not guilty on account of insanity” to “proven but the defendant is not criminally responsible on account of insanity”. It amends the Victims Rights Act so these victims get the same rights as oth-
ers. It amends the Mental Health Act so victims are heard on decisions of detention, escorted leave and conditions of placement. I pay huge tribute to Wendy and Sarah for their courage to make society safer and fairer. I also thank the 1467 Nelsonians who signed Wendy’s petition. We are on the home straight but not there yet. I encourage supportive submissions to the Justice Select committee at ju@parliament.govt.nz, my office or my caravan at the Nelson Market. I am Deputy Chair of the Committee and will be doing all I can to have this law change in place by Christmas. Advt.

Waimea rugby player picked for NZ team Aimee Berkett
Toni Sproul has just been selected for a New Zealand under-16 team touch team. Photo: Aimee Berkett.
A keen Waimea College rugby player has just been selected for the New Zealand U16 touch team. For Toni Sproul, rugby has been a way of life for nearly a decade. “I started playing when I was 6 years old, says Toni Toni started out playing Rippa rugby while he was at primary school, spending his lunch breaks every day out on the field with a ball in his hands. His older siblings always used to throw or kick a ball around the house when he was younger. While they played, he would sit on the sideline and watch. It was these time that inspired him to join the bigger game.
Now Toni plays rugby all year around. In summer he plays touch and in winter he plays tackle. He hopes in the near future to gain a starting position in the Waimea College XV combined team. Toni currently plays for a competitive Nelson touch team. He also plays for another team made up of his family members and plays in a less competitive grade during summer. Toni has been playing in rep teams for a few years. He was selected by the scouts from a national tournament earlier on in the year that was played up in Auckland, picked to represent New Zealand U16 touch in a trip over to Australia which would have been held later in the
year. The New Zealand U16 touch team was meant to go away to Australia in late 2020 to play other international teams but due to Covid-19 they had to cancel the overseas tournament. The new tournament will be held in Auckland later in the year. When touch is in season Toni trains a couple of times a week with his rep team, but when it is winter sports season he relies on his trainings from tackle rugby and games to keep him fit and active. Toni`s got plans for preparing himself and making sure he is ready for the New Zealand U16 tournament. “I am going to train more frequently and pick up the intensities of my trainings.”

Free sneakers for greater good Mixed fortunes as sport Jonty Dine returns to Brightwater Young netballers in Nelson will soon be filling the shoes of senior players in a community ‘sneaker swap’. The initiative is the brainchild of Garin College teacher and Nelson Netball Centre board member Sarah Rankin. “We wanted to be really community-focused when we came out of lockdown and make netball as accessible as possible.” She says they thought about what equipment is needed to play and not having good quality shoes was a barrier for a lot of young women. “It can often be a reason why kids don’t want to play because they don’t have the right gear.” To rectify this, Sarah has set up a shoe swap with hopes that it eventually becomes self-sustainable. “I think it’s going to grow. We want it to be not just for this season but something that continues to happen.” Sarah believes there is probably an abundance of spare sneakers sitting in netballers’ closets. “Some of those senior players buy a brand-new, quality pair of shoes and might only wear

Photo: Jonty Dine. them for one season then they sit at home doing nothing, so why not let someone else use them?” Sarah says she wants this type of community-based sharing to become the norm. “We don’t want it to be a thing where they are embarrassed to do it but hope it becomes just the way we do things here at netball.” Nelson Netball Centre manager Jared Locke says they want-
ed to do more for the netball community than just reducing the playing fees for this season. “Netball shoes can sometimes be a large cost, particularly when multiple family members all play, so why not create a campaign where we can reuse good quality shoes.” If you have a pair of netball shoes you wish to donate you can drop them at Garin College or to Nelson Netball at Saxton Stadium.
It was a return to the good old days for the Wanderers Sports Club on Saturday. Play started in the morning with Wanderers CSC playing the early Senior 5th grade netball game at Saxton Field against Waimea in a tight and robust match. Wanderers won 30-28 by holding their nerve late in the final quarter. The second match saw Wanderers Gold play the impressive Marist-Wairoa side, and Marist continued their excellent form to defeat the Gold Stars, 37-17. The 6th Grade team also played Waimea and although outclassed showed great heart and will continue to improve as they get more games together. Meanwhile, out at Centennial Park in Brightwa-
ter, rugby returned for the first time this year when the newly-formed under-18 team had a friendly match against Motueka High School. Wanderers players were committed and displayed a willingness for the contest and both teams enjoyed periods of dominance with the Wanderers backline looking good on attack but needing some fine tuning on defence and finishing. Taylor Berkett lead the team well, ably supported by Callum Stuart, Flynn Basalja and Jontee Taylor in the forward pack, and Devan Waters, Jaxon Taikato and Jake Jenner impressed in the backline, with Jack Hahn enhancing both forwards and backs showing his versatility. The final score was 17-12 to the visitors.

Local ref takes NBL opportunity Jacob Page Reporter
editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Richmond’s Corey Hogg is making the most of a refereeing opportunity which has come sooner than he expected. The 21-year-old officiated his first National Basketball League game on Tuesday night in Auckland when the Nelson Giants played the Franklin Bulls. Corey was in Auckland for his work-related study as a refrigeration engineer so was in the right place at the right time to get the whistle for two games last week. He also controlled the Giants v Canterbury Rams game on Thursday night. It’s a long way from when he first started refereeing mini-ball 10 years ago at the Richmond Badminton Centre. “Back then, as a kid, it was a bit of money,” he says. “You got $10 a game and
you’d get excited to see your payslip of $80 at the end of the month.” Corey has moved his way through the primary school, age-group and high school ranks and now almost exclusively referees Nelson’s senior competition on a Tuesday night. “I went to under-13 nationals which was the first big tournament I went to and I just loved the people and the friendships that I made,” he says. “It made me want to stick with it.” Corey says he tried to prepare as best he could for his first NBL assignment but also tried to trust his own instincts. “I went and watched the Auckland derby game from the stands on the Sunday before my game, just to get a feel for how the games were played,” he says. He said his first game could not have gone better. “I think the players did
respect me and it was probably the best game I could have asked for in the way the players and coaches responded to me being there. “I think I have a relaxed refereeing stance both on the court and off the court,” he says. Corey says that he managed to remain calm, despite it being his first big game.
“I was quite relaxed, even though it was my first game in the big league. “The physicality was a big step-up to what I’m used to. “I was trying to understand what they can tolerate and what they see as normal contact compared to what I am used to seeing.” Corey says he would like to continue

doing NBL games next year and beyond. “There’s options to go on the ANBL, or when I turn 25 I can try to become a FIBA international referee,” he says. For now, he wants to keep working hard. “In the short-term, I’d like to become a consistent NBL ref and get on the national panel.”

s w e N g n i h s Fi End of season Dominik Berghamer The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Nelson currently has about 250 members and the numbers keep climbing season after season. We believe this is due to the wide range of activities and events our Club offers and organises. There are things to do for kids and families (wharf fishing, trout pond day – and anything else really), educational events (women on water course with the harbour master, coast guard talks, etc.), social happenings (social days and weekend trips - but all our events are pretty social…) and of course competitive events like our club’s yearly competition and last, but certainly not least the Snapper Cup, which has become huge over the last couple of years. Thanks to our most generous sponsors we can not only keep the membership fees at a very low level, we can also hand out tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of prizes throughout each year. At the same time, we offer lots of valuable fishing advice and opportunities to get in contact and catch up with likeminded fisherpeople. All this is only possible through the tremendous efforts of our committee members who give up a lot of their free time to make being a member of the club such a rewarding experi-

It was a tale of two differing emotions for Waimea Combined coach James Lash after their 59-27 defeat to St Andrew’s College in the UC Championship on Saturday. The attack was strong but the defence was flimsy, forcing James to take stock of both outcomes prior to their game against lowly Lincoln Combined this Saturday. “Their number 10 ran a good, tight ship and they had a couple of ball runners who made an impression,” he says. “It was certainly a mixed bag
from a coaching perspective. “Defensively, we weren’t there but we did score a few points against a very good side. “It shows we are capable, we just need the same attitude when it comes to both aspects and we’ll be fine.” James says a couple of unforced errors lead to soft tries at times. He says his forwards are matching up physically with the Christchurch schools. “We went to pick-and-go’s against them and scored a try from it, and I thought our decision-making in the backs was pretty good.

“We need to have the belief in our abilities that we can compete against good teams like this,” he says. James says halfback Josh Miles impressed as did the two brothers in the front row, Edward and James Morris. “Josh Miles worked hard all day and got a try from a quicktap, using the strength he has.” James also praised Tobi Kirkwood-Thorpe’s defensive effort on the right wing. He says a similar performance against the rebuilding Lincoln Combined would see them earn their second win of the season.

Local pins hopes on European MTB September editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Wakefield’s Sam Gale has spent far more of 2020 scaffolding than he expected. The talented 19-year-old has had to bide his time at home while his world downhill mountain bike season in Europe was delayed by the Coronavirus pandemic. However, with a new start date just released, of September 6, the 19-year-old now has something to work towards. “My coach and I had always said that we would train as if the season was going to go ahead so that’s what we’ve done but it’s certainly not been easy,” Sam says. He was set to head to Portugal at the start of the year to compete in the down hill mountain bike

world championships in the elite class. He was fresh off finishing second in the four-round National series which he hoped would put him in good stead for his third stint in Europe. Gale is aiming for a top 30 finish in the elite class but admits the new season will be a sprint with races on back-to-back weekends in different countries. “It’ll be about a month-and-a-half season so it’ll be compact but I still have to get clearance from the government to fly to Europe,” he says. “Now there’s a date to work towards, it’s been easier to find the motivation. It’s been hard not to race but the scaffolding has kept me pretty fit and strong,” he says. “Hopefully we can get over there but if not I’ll focus on the next season here and keep working hard.”

This is part of an investigation called Nelson Future Access, aimed at identifying the best 30-year transport plan for the city. The options are the result of many months of research, building on previous work around the issues on the transport network. “We are now ready to hear from local people, and all options can allow more journeys by people into and out of Nelson, whether that’s for those driving, walking or using public transport,” says Jim Harland, Waka Kotahi Director Regional Relationships.
• Bank transfer to TDC account 12-3193-0002048-03.

The aim of this project is to improve the safety of our roads and redeploy workers from all industries affected by the COVID-19 response. We’d like to know about any problems in your area, particularly: • Overhanging trees or branches that could fall onto the footpath or road. • Overgrown trees that reduce road users' views of the road. Fill in the online submission at tasman.govt.nz (search = tree hazard), or email us at projects@tasman.govt.nz, with your name, contact phone number, the location of the hazard and a brief description of the problem. If you can, please provide photos.
