It forms part of a link between Hill St and Salisbury Rd at Holdaway Grove. Ian says he is glad to see them now removed from the track. “You’ve only got someone with a dog to step in it and you would have a very unhappy animal,” he says. He originally believed they were gin traps, which was ruled out by Peter. But they open and are a “cruel”

form of trapping. Also in sight of the traps were local wekas, which the recovery group is trying to get to breed in the area. “It’s just a stupid thing to do.” The Richmond Bird Recovery Group has a permit for box traps. Peter says if anyone comes across any more traps they should call PF Olsen, but they should also stay clear because of the physical danger involved, as well as the poisons that might have been included. Signs have been placed inviting the owner of traps to come forward and PF Olsen will hand the traps back. PF Olsen can offer permits to trappers in areas less populated with less public access.

Top Teams set for this weekend The region’s Top Teams will battle it out for finals qualification, at Saxton Field this weekend. There are two fields; adults and school students. The adult classes features a range of work teams, friends getting together and sports teams. The event is split into three heats, in Motueka, Murchison and at Saxton Field with the top few winners qualifying for the finals in Upper Moutere in late November. The Saxton Field heat is being held this Sunday. For more details or to enter, email haydenb@sporttasman.org. nz or call Hayden on 923 2314.

RSA to lead Armistice Day celebrations Richmond will celebrate Armistice Day this Friday with the local RSA leading proceedings, and president Terry Richardson says everyone is welcome to attend. Armistice Day, also known as Remembrance Day, is on 11 November and commemorates the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany to end hostilities on the Western Front of World War 1. The treaty took effect at eleven o’clock in the morning—the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918.

Terry says the Richmond RSA celebrates the occasion each year and will host a get together at the Richmond Town Hall this Friday from 10.45am. It will also be the first time that people will be able to wear their service medals at an offical event, which, hopes Terry, will encourage a few more people to attend the service. The ceremony will be hosted by Rick Williams and Terry says local folk are welcome to pop along and pay their respects to the 60 million people who died in the war.

Richmond’s accessibility tested The accessibility of Richmond’s CBD was put to the test by a mayor in a wheelchair on Friday morning. Tasman District mayor Richard Kempthorne, along with council staff and members of the Royal New Zealand Blind Foundation took to Queen St, Richmond Mall and Sundial Square with crutches, wheel chairs, prams and sight impaired goggles, to test the town’s mobility and accessibility. TDC’s transportation planning officer Sarah Downs says the biggest positive from the ex-

ercise was how much the public was willing to help, especially in supermarkets. However, she says one of the biggest points of discussion was the difficulty to manoeuvre around the Sundial Square car park in a wheelchair on to the footpath. Having flat even surfaces and colour contrasts in changing environments were also key, she says, while tackling the supermarket with crutches was near impossible if you planned to carry items. Richard says his most dramatic observation was how helpful people were.

Metal guitarist hits the right notes with Peasants Phillip Rollo If everything had worked to script, Clark Hinton would never have played for The Peasants. However, with a Smokefreerockquest national title in the bag, along with a single ready to hit the radio waves and television screens, the young Garin College guitarist seems quietly happy with how his year has turned out. In May, the friendly ever-smiling metal guitarist was heading for the regional finals with his rock band Paradox. But when the band chose not to take part for 2011, just a week out from the competition, Clark was approached by fellow Garin College band The Peasants. Just 24 hours before hitting the Trafalgar Centre, Clark said yes. Giving him only one night to learn the group’s songs. But while Paradox never quite hit the big time, his former band members have been supportive as they watch Clark make his name on the music scene as part of the seven-piece Peasants. “They’re all great musicians as well, and it is sad that Paradox didn’t go any further,” says the 18 year-old. “But it’s a great experience [for me] being in this band. Unfortunately metal doesn’t have as much of a range of an audience compared to the music that we’re playing at the moment.” The Peasants had finished runner-up last year under the name The Peasants of Eden. Caleb Nott, older brother of lead vocalist Georgia Nott, was the guitar-

ist in the then-four piece group. But when he finished school, Clark, rhythm guitarist Rupert Wockner and keyboardist Holly Tippler were embraced. “It’s so good to play with such incredible, top notch musicians because they’re all so polished and they perform absolutely amazingly. We still really can’t believe it. Rockquest has been a dream, even just to win the regionals let alone the nationals.” But how does a metal guitarist with such influences as Eric Clapton, Guns N Roses, Bon Jovi, Dream Theatre and Metallica feel about being in a pop band? Well, he’s loving it. “I didn’t think I’d ever been playing in a pop band but I love playing in the band now. It’s great. I didn’t used to find it that exciting but now it’s really opened my eyes up to a whole different world of music.” But even if he’s listening to John Mayer videos on YouTube, he still gets a chance to “let loose” every now and then, particularly in his live performances. Since winning the national final, The Peasants have been recording their debut single Let It Go at York St Studios in Auckland. The single is likely to be released over summer. And while the band members each have a demo of the song already, they are not allowed to show anyone. Clark, Chris Phillips and Joseph Corban-Banks will be staying in Nelson next year to keep the band within the region. They will spend a lot for 2012 writing new music. Their status amongst music fans throughout the country has seen requests come from all over New Zealand for concerts.

David is the second committee member to resign from Richmond Unlimited in the past four weeks with Tasman District councillor Judene Edgar earlier pulling out because of work and family commitments. Red Cross sets up shop in Richmond New Zealand Red Cross is bringing its new style of recycled clothing stores to Richmond and needs volunteers. Richmond’s shop will be an exciting, busy and professional recycled clothing store, offering the public a great range of Australasian items in a welcoming environment, says store coordinator Becky Wyatt. It will join the growing network of contemporary recycled clothing shops across New Zealand. “The shop will be staffed by volunteers so we are looking for a team of about 30 people. We have a fantastic training pro-

gram that covers all aspects of operating the shop so don’t worry if you haven’t worked in a shop before,” says regional retail manager Jill Lyne. “If you would like to meet new friends, engage in the community or learn something new, then this may be just what you are looking for.” People who are interested in being a part of the new Richmond retail team, with an interest in helping their local community, are encouraged to call New Zealand Red Cross. Volunteers are asked to give a few hours each week in stock sorting, preparation and sales related roles.

Not only will the Red Cross be a great environment to find a great bargain in, but it will contribute essential funds to enable local services such as disaster preparedness and response, youth holiday programmes, community transport, people savers first aid, Save a Mate drug and alcohol harm minimisation courses and Meals on Wheels. Becky will be the retail coordinator for the store and has relocated from Christchurch. Becky says she is excited about the prospect. To contact the Richmond store call Becky on 027 559 9474.

Guides scrape for scrap The Whakatu Girl Guides have added some steel to their fundraising campaign this year with a scrap metal collection over the weekend. The aim is to raise money in a “final push” towards getting Nelson Guides to the National Jamboree in Rotorua this January. Josie Macdonald helped to organise what was the silver lining on a long fundraising drive. “With final payments due on the twentieth we are coming towards the end of our fundraising. We’ve done sausage sizzles, quiz nights and movie nights and this was the final push at the end,” she says. Every piece of scrap metal both large and small will help, and there were some very

large pieces from the door to door campaign, including a bed frame and a hotwater cylinder. “A nice man went searching through his garage for us and came up with big hotwater cylinder and a T.V. antenna,” says Ashleigh Macdonald, a Girl Guide who assisted in the effort. Thirty-four girls and two adults are heading to the marquee event on the Guides’ calendar. Guide Amy Coulton described the jamboree as a “really fun camp with Guides from around New Zealand, and some international girls.” The Guides are hosting a garage sale this Sunday at 125 Waimea Rd.

Well you’ve seen the last of it, for the time being anyway, with the set of traffic lights ready to go live today at 10am. The traffic lights were built to reduce heavy flow on Salisbury Rd during peak times. TDC WON’T FUND WORLD CUP BID: Tasman District mayor Richard Kempthorne has ruled out helping fund Nelson’s FIFA Under-20 World Cup proposal. Nelson City Council is looking at being a catergory 3 host, enabling the city to host three pool games, one round of 16 game and possibly a quarter final. The Under-20 World Cup attracts a television audience of 450 million, says NZ Football. But the TDC will focus their spending on roading, although Richard and deputy mayor Tim King have offered their personal assistance and support. GOLDEN RUN FOR TE MANIA: Te Mania a Nelson wine making pioneer has won Pure Gold for its 2011 Sauvignon Blanc at the 2011 Air New Zealand Wine Awards. The Air New Zealand Wine Awards are the premier wine competition in New Zealand attracting more than 1,500 entries each year. Gold Medal winners will be celebrated at a special tasting in Auckland and Trophies awarded at a gala dinner at the Langham on Saturday 12 November 2011. Te Mania also won Silver for its 2011 Pinot Gris and its new 2011 Gewurztraminer – the first made under the Te Mania label. “We have nearly sold out of our 2010 which won gold at the Sydney international so it’s very pleasing to again be recognised for producing exceptional Nelson Sauvignon Blanc” says Jon Harrey, co-founder of Te Mania vineyard. These award winning wines sell for NZ$19.95 at Te Mania’s cellar door in McShane Road, Richmond. Hundreds steam in to logging weekend Phillip Rollo More than a thousand people hit Pigeon Valley Steam Museum for its annual Logging Weekend. The weekend was two full-on days of everything logging; from axe men to logger sports, even the history of how steam engines used to operate back in the day. Secretary Allan Palmer was thrilled with the turn out but says Saturday’s weather meant there were bigger numbers on the Sunday, a change from last year’s inaugural event. Saturday featured the King of the Forest logger sports team’s races. The logger sports competition went off superbly with around six teams of four local forestry workers going headto-head in four different disciplines. “It was superb and in some cases the races went down to fractions of a second,” says Allan. The four main disciplines included; weaving a grommet which involves unravelling wire rope and putting it back together to join two eyes together, assembling the bar and chain of a chainsaw and cutting three rounds off a log, limbing a tree and chain sawing a log into 300m blocks and splitting them in half. After each activity, the competitor had to run an obstacle course. The Payne brothers won the chocker man race and a prize pool of Stihl products. Nigel Kelly of Kelly Logging won the rope splice competition. Allan paid credit to a strong Fulton Hogan side. Sunday was purely a public day and entrants got a first hand look at the history of steam logging. The axe men did a display, which is likely to become a serious competition at next year’s event. A women’s team has also shown interest in the logger sports. Allan says there were a lot of people who had never been to the steam museum before and the feedback was all very positive.

Murchison’s King the queen of politics

For Labour’s deputy leader, returning to Richmond isn’t classed as work; it’s just like coming home. Annette King made a flying visit to the region to support local list MP Maryan Street’s election campaign and she bumped into a few familiar faces along the way. Annette was born in Murchison and went to school there before spending her final year of secondary school at Waimea College. “I always like coming to Nelson and I was just saying to Maryan that maybe I’d meet some of my relatives in the mall,” she laughed. Annette was the dental nurse at Waimea Intermediate School and was married at the Nelson Cathedral. Her daughter was born in the Nelson Hospital, before Annette moved out of the region in 1971, destined for the North Island. Although she is now the second-in-charge for the opposition, Annette says she was never into politics during her college years. “I was more interested in the boys. When I was young [politics] didn’t

Dux collects perfect run Waimea College’s Dux for 2011 is a self confessed perfectionist. But that probably won’t come as any surprise to anyone that knows Emma Talbot after the student also collected the top award in every single subject she took this year. “There were so many people in our year that could have got it,” says Emma. “You know, there were just so many people that had worked hard for it. When they called my name out my legs went numb and I felt like I couldn’t walk.” Emma is planning to start a double degree in law and arts at Victoria University next year and will receive $1000 from ASB Bank for winning Waimea’s top academic award. Emma says there has never been any pressure on her to strive for excellence, but it’s just part of her nature. She says it is a “weird feeling” knowing that she will not come back to Waimea next year. Volunteer managers celebrated on awareness day The effort of volunteer leaders was recognised on Volunteer Managers’ Day last Saturday. The day is celebrated internationally on November 5 every year, and local organiser, Jude McNabb from Volunteer Nelson, says the aim is to draw the attention of the community to the work done by those who lead volunteers. “Volunteering does not succeed in a vacuum – we want the whole community to think about the efforts of volunteers after the Christchurch earth-quakes, and currently with the Rena oil spill, as examples of communities that want to pull together

for the common good, and just need some leadership,” she says. It is unusual to see volunteer power demonstrated twice in one year, and according to Jude and to see volunteers take the lead. “In both these cases there were challenges to official prescriptions and policies, and frustration with delays in getting help where it is needed. So volunteers took the lead with enormous effect, the silt shovelling Student Army in Christchurch is a great example.” Volunteer Nelson urged people to pause and say thanks to volunteer leaders.

New citizens get warm welcome A new wave of Waimea citizens were officially sworn in at Richmond last Thursday. Garin College’s Siobhan O’Brien is a New Zealand citizen after seven years of waiting. The 16 year-old student and her parents Dee and Denis were just three of many residents to gain their citizenship to the country. Siobhan says she was particularly excited about the native tree that came with her new citizenship, while Denis claimed the wait was a long time coming after the English family never applied for residency on arrival into New Zealand. Emma Radcliffe of Wakefield says citizenship will provide more security since shifting to New Zealand, after ironically originally hailing from Wakefield, England. She says it was a proud moment for the family and she applied for citizenship after holding permanent residency. People must prove they have a skill-set needed in New Zealand upon moving here. Members of the Hope School ukelele band provided entertainment. The songs included the New Zealand national anthem and a selection of Maori performances.

Super Liquor’s helpful and friendly team in Salisbury Road are at the ready, with good sound advice and recommendations to ensure your Christmas function is one to remember. They have one of the biggest beer ranges around, so whether you are a Pilsner or a Pale Ale fan, they’ll have your poison. Their wine selection includes gold medal winners, undiscovered gems, local legends and international all stars, so get out the good glasses, grab some cheese and check it out. Johnny, Jack, Gordon, Jim, Jose, Captain Morgan - it may sound like your list of facebook friends, but it’s actually a sample of the spirits at Super Liquor. They will help you choose just the right refreshments for your function, working in with your budget and tastes. Laurien Fijn from Abbey Garden Bar is our region’s ‘hostess with the mostest’. She can take the hassle out of hosting any function from Christmas parties to weddings, birthdays, in fact any function for any size group. Abbey Garden Bar offers a venue with a variety of settings in their beautiful gardens. Laurien is happy to provide food with delicious pizzas, platters and well-priced nibbles but their point of difference is that they also allow, and

actively encourage, self-catering. That means you can bring along all of your favourite dishes and use their BBQ facilities, keeping the cost of hosting a function to a minimum. “We’ve found that a lot of our customers can be a bit daunted by having to host a function and don’t have the time and energy to get the house or garden looking fabulous before everyone arrives and often they just don’t have the room to accommodate a large group of people. They love the convenience of being able to bring everyone here for an easy, fun and affordable celebration,” says Laurien. “And on top of all that, we don’t charge for using the venue.” Call Laurien to enquire about bookings on 544 1908. For somewhere special for this year’s Christmas Function go to The Tides Restaurant at Trailways Hotel, Nelson. The Tides have Christmas themed set menus to suit all budgets from as little as $38.50 per person for a two course set menu which comes with Christmas decorations on the tables. They also have a special offer of a $50 voucher for the organiser/business (conditions apply) with every 10 people who dine. Some nights have live music too! You will have to book early to avoid disappointment.

NZ champion ready to roar for Tigers Phillip Rollo On paper the Nelson Tigers should crawl all over the Canterbury Glen Eagles this weekend. But 1NZ Dale Ewers says you just have to look at the Rugby World Cup final to see how the underdogs can perform on their day, even if the French couldn’t quite get past the All Blacks. The Tigers and Glen Eagles will compete for the McCall Trophy at Nelson’s Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway on Saturday night. The Nelson Tigers team will consist of four of either Dale Ewers, Blair Cunningham, Jared Gray, Shane Harwood and Ian Clayworth. While the Tigers have the stronger team, Dale is making sure they don’t turn up thinking they’ve won the race before they get out of the gates. “When the French came along to play it was game on wasn’t it? We will certainly start on Saturday night, we want to go out there and win but if we’re not on our game then they’ll beat us.” There is no communication on the track, meaning drivers have to be continually reading the race. But a downside for some teams is targeting a particular driver they assume is the runner, when in fact it is not. Something the Tigers have been cunning with in the past is handing blocking roles

to those more suited to running. “A lot of the time I was our main runner and our only runner and the opposition teams would just nail me. But that left the door open for others. When we go out of the gate we run our race, we don’t shag around playing too many games. We go there on a mission.” Dale says this season is likely to be his swan song and is putting the majority of his focus into teams racing, before spending more time with his family and work ventures after 11 years in the sport. “It’d be fair to say I wouldn’t be racing this year if I didn’t have 1NZ on my body. My days are numbered. I’m after one championship and if I win that I’ll probably retire.” TIGER READY TO POUNCE: 1NZ Dale Ewers will be switching his body to the stripes of the Nelson Dale says the 1NZ has Tigers as they tackle the Canterbury Glen Eagles at Nelson’s Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway made him a target on the this Saturday night for the McCall Trophy. Bryant best of the field Greg Bryant was the star at the 77th Annual South Island Croquet Championships held in Nelson over the weekend, taking out both the open championship and the men’s championship. “I was fairly pleased with how I played in general,” he says. “It’s still early on though so there is plenty to be worked on at this stage but it did go all pretty well.” It was just Greg’s second hit out of the season, but now that it is underway, the New Zealand international hopes the result is the start of bigger things, as he aims for ranking points before the World Croquet Championship in Adelaide next year. Greg’s season will completely revolve around the World Championship as the New Zealand number one looks to be seeded highly in the tournament. “I just want to make sure I’m in good form to make the most of it. Current form is the key thing and I’m putting in results now that are far better than what I’ve managed previously.” One change to Greg’s game has been the introduction of a new mallet to his arsenal. A date clash with the Australian Open meant that top class competition was lacking at the Nelson-Hinemoa Croquet Club over the weekend, although a handful of competitors made the trek north from Christchurch. Greg says the council’s lawn conditions might have been another sour point. “It needs a significant amount of work. There are one or two big competitions in Nelson this season but they’ve got a long way to go to bring the conditions up to standard to accommodate those types of events. The club seems willing, they just need council support.” Greg will look to defend the New Zealand Open title in January. Fishing with

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club The snapper have now arrived in Tasman Bay with reports of good numbers being caught in front of Rabbit Island and along the Boulder Bank. Lots of good size kahawai have also been landed, some of which have been full of whitebait. Delaware Bay is still fishing well with some 20lb plus fish being landed in recent weeks, with plenty of gurnard around also. There are still heaps of scallops at Okiwi bay with only a couple of tows required to secure most people’s limit. Fishing in the mussel rafts at Squally Cove has been producing some nice brim, gurnard and kahawai also. Kenepuru has been inconsistent with only a few good snapper being caught but should start to come right in the next few weeks. Tip for this month: Fishing the Kenepuru is best done on the incoming tide, either early morning or evening. Try to fish where there is a good current flow, using lots of salmon burley and be patient. It can take up to several hours from low tide for the fish to come into your burley trail and on the bite. Stray lining works best with 2 beak hooks about 7/0, with one acting as a keeper hook and followed by a small 1/2oz ball sinker. Pilchards are usually the best bait. The bigger fish are usually back in the burley trail so a long cast is a good bet. The reel is put into free spool with only enough drag to stop the tide pulling out nylon. Sit back, wait for the strike and hope that you are as lucky as Kaleb McKay was.

Ladies golf convenor steps down Jonathan McKeown Jean McConachie is stepping down as the convenor of Greenacres Golf Club’s ladies nine-hole group after seven years, a period that seen the club grow through her efforts. The management at Greenacres are delighted with Jean’s efforts and has helped to grow golf through dedication and innovation at the club, says club president Graham Sherlock. The Greenacres ladies nine-hole club has around 30 regular participants on a Thursday morning and the idea was always to get more people playing golf. “It’s a strong group and it always has been. We have always had a lot of numbers compared with the other groups around the area,” says Jean. The original idea was that people would come to nine holes and learn the game and then a lot of them would move on to play 18 holes. “But a lot of people just continue with the nine holes because it suits their lifestyle. A lot of who are still working and have other interests 18 holes may be just too much of a commitment a done morning at the club is enough and the club is a chance to meet people and learn a skill. It’s is a social group but it is also competitive in that we have a lot meetings with the other nine hole teams from the rest of clubs around Nelson,” says Jean. Each club puts on its own nine-hole tournament meaning there is one almost every month and the teams even travel over to Marlborough to compete, but the club is for people of all different skill levels

As a convenor the main role is to make sure everything is going smoothly on the Thursday game and to run the tournaments but she takes her role a step further, making sure that the ladies really enjoy their time and gel together. “Some people certainly like to socialise so we have arranged, theatre evenings and outings to lunch so with a lot it has become more than just the Thursday,” says Jean. WTTU have upperhand after first day’s play

Two of Tasman’s closest neighbours returned to Ben Cooper Park with the home side, Waimea Toi Toi United collecting first innings honours, something that could become quite important later on in the season. Taylors Contracting Wanderers are a just 48 for 6 in their second innings, a lead of just 36 runs after they’d trailed WTTU by 12 runs on the first innings. Robbie’s Bar and Bistro WTTU are the only undefeated side in the competition, but still sit behind StokeNayland on points. WTTU skipper Jon Routhan says the team was confident of getting a result early after taking 16 wickets on Saturday, four of those to last season’s top wicket taker Leath Armstrong. “You’d be pretty disappointed if you came out on the wrong side next week,” he says. “They’ve got some good batsmen coming back,

but even if they did well, chasing 100/150 we think we’ll be okay.” Batsman Ricky Edwards was the pick of the home side, fighting his way through to an impressive 60 runs. Jon says that total on the Ben Cooper pitch was probably equal to a century on any other one around Nelson. WTTU declared on 112 for 7, hoping to snare a result. Wanderers only managed 100 runs in the first innings, of the day all out in fewer than 38 overs. Central District Stag fast bowler Joe O’Connor was the only player to contribute significantly with the bat as he made his way to 30. Joe was 12th man for the Central Districts Stags in their opening Plunket Shield match against the Wellington Firebirds in Napier on Monday. Play resumes this Saturday.

Brendon Barnett knows how to make sure Waimea College picked the right guy. Fresh from claiming the Glue Family Cup at Waimea College’s sports awards, the 17 year-old long jumper claimed yet another New Zealand record at the Athletics Nelson Twilight Series meet on Friday. Brendon leaped out to 7.32m with a legal wind of +1.1 to further his New Zealand Under-18 record by just 1cm. Brendon won the top award at the prize giving due to his record breaking feats, says Waimea College sports director Daniel Hobbs, acknowledging the fact that he is performing better than any one person in the country’s history. The New Zealand long jumper has come on leaps and bounds in the past 12 months and his acceptance of the trophy was just rewards for the year 12 student. Brendon represented the country at the IAAF World Youth Athletics Championship in Lille, France, earlier this year. In the lead up to the tournament Brendon jumped the previous record of 7.31m at a hot meet, earning himself the New Zealand Under-18 record. Brendon was already a gold medallist at the New Zealand Secondary School CHAMPION: New Zealand Under-18 record holder Championship, where he broke the New Brendon Barnett claimed the Glue Family Cup for Zealand Under-17 record of 7.19m in Greatest Sporting Achievement at Waimea College’s December 2010. Coach leaves Richmond football The man who coached Richmond Athletic to back-to-back titles is the latest person to leave the club, following its decision not to push for Robbie’s Premier League promotion. Steve Bignall will take the reigns at Nelson’s newest club, FC Nelson, and will be joined by Richmond’s manager Rick Gower. FC Nelson is an amalgamation of Nelson City, Nelson United, Nelson Metro and Tahunanui. The pair will leave behind a wealth of experience with Steve having coached Nelson Suburbs to two Mainland League titles in 2004 and 2005 and then Steve and Rick having been involved with the Richmond Athletic team that won the Nelson Pine Industries first division title in both 2010 and 2011. FC Nelson president Martin Byrne was pleased to secure both individuals after an interviewing process. “We are very pleased to have been able

to secure the services of such an experienced team to lead our top first division team for the coming season. 2011 has been a big year for the club in terms of bringing together 900 junior and senior players under one banner and this has not been without it’s challenges. Setting up the new club has only been possible through the fantastic support of the players, coaches, managers and the parents and we look forward to building on that in 2012.” The first part of that process is the appointment of Steve and Rick and with further appointments due in the near future in terms of a development team coach and junior technical advisor. Nelson Suburbs have sneared former Richmond captain Joe Green, as well as imports Jordan Yong, Ben Wright and potentially Team Wellington target man Sam Mason-Smith. Joe and Ben will coach the side along with Cary Hamson.

Public Notice of Right to Demand a Poll on Electoral System

Subject to Resource Consent NN 000425 the Council’s Rivers Maintenance Contractor, Taylors Contracting will be undertaking chemical spraying to control the growth of vegetation along riverbanks and fairway areas at the following locations:

On 11 August 2011, the Tasman District Council decided to retain the First Past the Post (FPP) electoral system for the 2013 and 2016 local government triennial elections. This is the system that the Council has used in past elections for Council and community boards.

Takaka River – from Paynes Ford to 5 km upstream of Lindsay’s Bridge. (Starting at RD 0.200 ending at RD 28.250km)

Anatoki River – from the confluence with Takaka River upstream for 6 km.

Notice is given under section 28 (1) of the Local Electoral Act 2001, that electors of the Tasman District Council have the right to demand a poll on the electoral system to be used at the next two triennial general elections (2013 and 2016) of the Tasman District Council.

Waingaro River – from the confluence with Takaka River upstream for 6 km.

Aorere River – between Ferntown Bridge and Rockville. Note that an aerial spray will occur in the river bed on, or about, the line of Pa Road of gorse, broom and mixed willow species on land in, or adjacent to, the Aorere River bed. This trial involves scientific monitoring procedures and is covered by the current Vegetation Control resource consent and under a consent being processed under Section 330 of the Resource Management Act. This work is specifically being carried out as a result of landowner requests following the 28 December 2010 flood. No spraying will be carried out over water.

The choice is between the First Past the Post (FPP) and the Single Transferable Vote (STV) electoral systems. Unless a poll determines otherwise, the FPP electoral system will continue to be used for the Tasman District Council. A valid demand for a poll must be: • made in writing; • signed by at least 5 percent of eligible electors of the Tasman District Council. This will require 1,690 elector signatures; • delivered to the office of the Tasman District Council, 189 Queen Street, Richmond, 7020 by Tuesday 28 February 2012.

Temporary Reservation of a section of the Wairoa River for logging operations between 14 November and 2 December 2011 Pursuant to provisions of the Tasman District Council Navigation Safety Bylaw, the Tasman Harbourmaster has granted a temporary reservation of a 250m section of the waters of the Wairoa River adjacent to the picnic area 300m north of the junction of Old Mill Road and Wairoa Gorge Road, for logging operations, between 5:30 am and 4.00 pm on weekdays between 14 November and 2 December 2011. The effect of the temporary reservation will be to prevent access to that section of river by all users, in the interests of public safety. Signage on site will advise of a 120m long alternative overland route to bypass the reserved section of river. No restrictions on use of the river will be in place between 4.00 pm on any Friday and 5:30 am on the subsequent Monday during this period. A number of conditions have been imposed, which may be viewed by contacting the Tasman District Council’s Harbourmaster on 03 543 8400 or Warwick Winn of Hancock Forest Management (NZ) Ltd on 03 541 7002 during office hours.
