Popular heli service moves Steve Page According to CEO and co-owner of Helicopters Nelson, Pete Darling, it made good sense to relocate the headquarters from Wakefield to Nelson Airport. Helicopters Nelson is a company with a big reputation running 3 craft and catering for all sorts of airborne requirements. “While we still do search and rescue and are very experienced in firefighting, we also are seeing a steady increase in other types of work,” says Pete. From flying to popular restaurants to dropping off mountainbikers, our company offers a wide range of services. All you need to do is make contact with our Operations manager Thomas Darling. Pete is a highly-qualified instructor and has another 2 pilots working with him, as well as a team of staff looking after the customers. One of their more popular services is to transport to and from some of the great hunting areas the region has to offer, including Glazebrook, the legendary hunting property in Marlborough. “We are able to help out customers who are time-poor and need to get anywhere efficiently and comfortably,” says Pete. While Pete and his team enjoyed their previous location in Wakefield, they’re now situated in Dakota St, just through the roundabout at the airport.

Even after taking numerous precautions, a Tasman local, Michelle Westrupp Jim Mackie, was• 021 recently 03 544 2900 760 068 releasedmichelle.westrupp@summit.co.nz from hospital after contracting Legionnaires disease. “It snuck up quickly, I was like a jellyfish on the beach and couldn’t get out of a chair,” says Jim. Jim, a keen gardener, knows the risks associated with catching Legionnaires disease and using potting mix but had been mitigating the risks by watering it down. Going to reuse an old potting mix bag he didn’t think to redampen it. He breathed in a cloud of residue potting mix dust as he pushed pieces of cardboard inside. The symptoms developed over
headaches and stiffness. The stiffness developed so that he was unable to move his limbs, and then he had total weakness although his breathing was still ok. Nelson Marlborough Health brings the seriousness of the disease to the surface with the release of four cases of Legionnaires disease in the Tasman district in November alone. “Legionnaires’ disease is a serious, but preventable, illness,” says Clinical Director of Public Health and a Medical Officer of Health for Nelson Marlborough Health, Dr Stephen Bridgman. “Fortunately, we have had no deaths locally in the last three years, but sadly there was a
Potting mix is the most common source of the disease but it’s also present in compost, inadequately-treated spa pools and hot water cylinders that are not set to a minimum of 60 degrees Celsius. “Recent cases in our region have all been connected to soil, compost or potting mix used while gardening without adequate protection,” Stephen says. At this time of year, when people are getting into their gardens more, we urge people to take care handling these products and to follow advice to reduce their risk, in particular, the use of masks to prevent inhaling the bacteria when handling potting mix or compost.

Call for help straight away Steve Page A fire was quickly brought under control on the hills in Brightwater on Monday night. Local resident Toby Harvey was chainsawing firewood on his property when he hit a rock in the tree, the sparks of which quickly set fire to some dry gorse close by. “I’m keen to let folks know just how quick it started and spread. I’m always pretty careful with this kind of stuff but
before I had figured out what was going on it had spread,” he said. When it was apparent he couldn’t put it out himself he acted without hesitation. “I rang the fire brigade,” he said. Eight appliances turned up and brought the blaze under control within an hour. “I guess in the back of my mind I was conscious of the fires a year or two ago and, judging by the quick response of the brigade, so were they.”

Christmas lights returned years later Jacqui Rawson It was a shocked Gary Brown (Brownie) who found three sets of Christmas lights and a Christmas card sitting on his doorstep last week. They had been left anonymously, and the Christmas card contained apologies for the theft of Gary’s lights, Christmas lights that had been stolen a few years ago. “It’s the thought behind returning the lights that counts for me,” says Gary. He has been putting up Christmas lights for many years, for no other reason than to bring enjoyment to whoever wants to stop and check them out. The writer of the card said they were deeply ashamed of their and their friend’s young, naïve and stupid act of stealing Gary’s ‘beautiful lights’ that night. In the card, they also mentioned

The renovation of Lake Rotoiti Lodge Outdoor Education Centre at St Arnaud is finally complete with the refurbishments and upgrade taking two years and costing close to $2 million. The project was a huge undertaking and completed with help from community fundraising, local businesses, organisations and individuals. The 52-year-old building has hosted over 120,000 school kids from across the Top of the South in its lifetime and was long overdue an upgrade. Trevor Marshall, project man-
ager for the refit, says, “I’d like to thank everyone who was a part of this project, from the fundraisers to those who donated goods or labour. “What we have now is an awesome venue, ready to play host to schools and private functions for another half-century.” A recent online auction to establish a fund to pay fees for children unable to attend school camps due to financial difficulties raised $50,000. “This will go a long way to helping provide inclusivity for school children from all backgrounds,” says Trevor. The upgraded lodge now boasts a commercial-grade kitchen with a huge timber
deck that overlooks the lake. There is new furniture for dining, living and outdoor areas; full double-glazing for the winter months; a second workshop; new outdoor sporting equipment including stand-up paddle boards; three new lodge vehicles; as well as an attractive new paint job throughout. The improvements will be welcomed by schools for camps and those looking to privately hire the venue for corporate or personal events, such as weddings, seminars, workshops, team building and retreats. Being so close to the lake, ski field, and tramping and mountain bike tracks, the lodge is in a prime position.

Lorna Gower knew Abigail Paccker was worthy of being a Kiwibank local hero medalist and didn’t hesitate to nominate her. “She’s hard working, strong, decisive and unwavering in a good way. She sees the vision and goes for it,” says Lorna. When Abigail got a phone call last week congratulating her on being one of the three local medalists, she was thrilled for Kai with Love, the charity she leads. Kai with Love gives away around 6 tonnes of food a week to 700 households. It started just two and a half years ago and for a time Abigail turned her home into a food depot delivering in her husband’s prized Falcon. “Once we had a great wall of fish. Over six feet high and eight feet wide, 1400 boxes of fish and all gone within a few hours,” says Abigail. “We outgrew the Falcon, we outgrew our lounge, and we outgrew the whole house,” says Abigail. Her husband bought her a van for deliveries and they now use Richmond Community Church as their base. “It’s God’s work. He goes

Shop & Win winner
Students interview well-known New Zealanders Jacqui Rawson
Steve Page This year’s Shop & Win winner just couldn’t believe it. When Sue Morris from Queen St Pharmacy rang her last Monday night with the good news, Susie Heart was in denial. “I have never won anything,” she says, “let alone ever had $5000 in the bank in my whole life.” Susie has been a loyal customer of Queen St Pharmacy for a number of years and has had a bit of a battle over the last few. Sue Morris was absolutely thrilled for Susie and along with a big hug there were a few tears shed. And what will Susie spend her winnings on? “Well, I have to tell my daughter first, she will be thrilled, then I’ll have a think about it. But I’d like to treat myself, maybe get some dental work done,” says Susie. “It’s wonderful and thank you very much to Sue and her team at QSP and thanks so much to the Waimea Weekly. It’s made my Christmas!” Shop&Win has now been running in the Waimea Week-

Gather up your friends and family for a relaxing afternoon of live music by talented young solo singers and bands at Washbourn Gardens Music Festival, Richmond, this Saturday, 12 December at 5pm. Bring a picnic blanket and your chilly bin and grab a spot to enjoy the live performances, as well as street art activity and craft stalls which are on offer. There will also be food trucks supplying everything from ice cream to churros. Yulia Panfylova, event co-ordinator at Tasman District Council, says, “The Music Festival’s main goal is
to provide a safe setting for young people where they can perform to the public in a non-competitive and relaxing environment. “Supporting local talent is really important and what better way to do it than with a summer’s afternoon of live music?” Performers include The Few, Wiz Kid and the Biscuits, Mia Grace, KahliMae Salmon, Alex Hinchliffe, Katelyn Clist and Lauren Loghry. The event is free and has been put together with the assistance of Waimea Youth Council who ask that you take all your rubbish home with you to keep the park clean. The event is the postponed Spring Music Festival which was rained off last month.
Producing a fundraising cookbook placed students in positions they never imagined themselves being in. “A year ago, I would never have imagined myself on a zoom call with Ashley Bloomfield,” says Nate Wilbourne. The book, entitled, ‘Riding the Covid Wave’ had the students ringing other well-known New Zealanders’ such as MP’s Chris Hipkins, Caroline McElmay and Damien O’Connor whose Covid experiences are included in the book. “My first interview was with Nick Smith, but I wasn’t too nervous because he’s my friend’s uncle,” says
student Jessica Wright. “We now know Parliament’s hold music off by heart as Nate and I spent a lot of time ringing them,” Jessica added. Student Tyler Taaffe said the best part of the experience was getting to understand what people had gone through as part of Covid, and that the interviews meant he got to know people from around the school better. It was agreed that any profit from book sales would be a bonus and that the experience created for everyone involved in making the book was worth a lot more. The book was launched on Monday and is available at PaperPlus Richmond and Nelson.

Volunteers needed for Community Christmas Dinner Jenny Nicholson Reporter
jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The Richmond Community Christmas Dinner committee is asking for volunteers to help feed 150 guests on Christmas Day. The dinner has been held for nearly ten years and last year was held in the new hall at Holy Trinity Church on the Hill. Last year was the first year in the new kitchen and the carrots and potatoes didn’t cook on time. “The mayor and the vicar had to talk to everyone for half an hour while they cooked,” says committee member Vicki Spiers. She has been contacting businesses asking for donations for a few months. There are around 25 different suppliers and all food other than the meat is donated. “It’s amazing what the commercial community does. People are fabu-
lous,” she says. With 25 kg of potatoes, 20 kgs of carrots, 30 kg of ham, 13 rolled legs of lamb, and a surprise item on the menu, the committee is hoping for two teams of volunteers. The first team doing the food preparation works from 9 am until 1 pm and the second team that cleans up works from 12.30 to 3 pm. Vicki’s day starts at 8 am and she says that at the end of the day she sits down and collapses, but she loves helping. “I think it makes a special Christmas,” she says. She says they put on a flash, twocourse meal. The meal is free, but tickets are necessary to keep track of numbers attending. The tickets are available from Aged Concern Richmond and the Richmond Mall kiosk. If you would like to volunteer, please phone Holy Trinity Church on 544 8844.

How to sell in NZ Jenny Nicholson
Garry Sefton with his book on selling in New Zealand. Photo: Jenny Nicholson.
Garry Sefton’s new book ‘Closing the Sale’ is a how-to of sales written by a Kiwi, for Kiwis. He is hoping it inspires people who don’t have a job or are looking to change careers to consider sales. Garry loves sales. In 36 years of selling cars he didn’t have a sick day. “Sales has been good to me,” says Garry. He recently had a conversation with an older car dealer who said, “those were the days.” Garry doesn’t believe that. He says sales are still what you make it. One car dealer in Christchurch sold 42 cars in a weekend following the earthquakes. “People spend because it makes them

feel happy,” says Garry. While in a car yard in Hirosima, Japan, he had his career best sale.Walking though acres of Mazdas, he spoke with the buyer in Christchurch. As Garry read out the odometers on the car, the buyer said ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to each one. He said ‘yes’ to 33 cars. ‘Closing the Sale’ has practical advice along with anecdotes from Garry’s life. Garry looked in libraries and in shops to find a book on how to sell from a Kiwi perspective. He couldn’t find one so wrote one himself. Paper Plus is selling the book for $30. For one of two free copies, go to the Waimea Weekly facebook site and comment on an article this week. Winners will be notified.
Twenty years as Father Christmas Cyril says the youngest child he ever had on his knee was 10 days old and the oldest in their 70s. A resident of Stillwater Lifecare and Gardens, Cyril tells of first starting his days as Father Christmas at the UFS Dispensary in the late 1980s. Cyril continued his role in different locations through Uniquely Nelson, part of Nelson City Council. “An exciting part of the job was coming up with ways to keep the kids happy,” says Cyril.

LARIOS ROSÉ OR CITRUS MEDITERRANEAN GIN
JIM BEAM WHITE LABEL BOURBON HANDLE
Larios Citrus Gin: A soft and refreshing Gin insipired in the Mediterranean essence. The Mediterranean oranges and subtle orange colour, together with it’s citric aromas filled with intensity, give it a unique flavour as an incredible refreshment.
Since 1795, Jim Beam has been crafted by the Beam family and distilled with a strong sense of family values. Seven generations later, it’s still made with those same values and aged twice as long as the law requires. Perhaps that’s why, today, Jim Beam stands as the World’s #1 Bourbon.

Students face environmental challenges in fun day out Jacqui Rawson Reporter
jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Children from Wakefield and Dovedale Schools jumped into a day’s-worth of 17 challenges with an environmental focus recently. They were part of 130 school children from 13 primary schools across the Tasman district involved in the fun day of activity-based learning. “It was great to see the kids enjoying a broad range of environmental challenges from the supportive agencies involved in the event,” says Tasman District Council partnership and education officer, Nic Brydon. TDC organise the annual event where schools are invited to bring two teams of 5 students each to the Tasman Mission event where they must face environmental education challenges. As part of the event, the students, along with learning about the environment and sustainability, learn things like teamwork and problem-solving with a fun sense of competition. “It’s great to see the grounds being used by the community,” says Whenua Iti general manager Mark Bruce-
Josephine Roxburgh with a skink at the Tasman Mission event. Photo: Supplied. Miller. “Particularly for an event such as the Tasman Mission that supports our tamariki to be active learners – we love that.” Part of the organisation is for the Tasman District Council to invite environmental groups to come up with fun activities. There were a total of 17 different stations containing these

activities scattered around the Whenua Iti site. Points were allocated on timing, so students raced between each station and worked fast on the different challenges, which produced an element of competition on the day. Different stations included fixing a bicycle puncture and pest trapping, along with flax harakeke weaving.

Just the mention of the word ‘home’ sparks emotions in our hearts. At its best home is a place of safety, security, peace, love, rest. And yet 2020 has been a year marked by the absence of those qualities in our country and around our world. Recently I read a post from a friend in the United States who, having been displaced from their home, had together with his wife taken their young children to live with grandparents. But after possible exposure to Covid, they had to move away from the grandparents’ home and found themselves taking shelter in a local church. He writes in this context, having kissed his three children goodnight on the first day of Advent, of being reminded “that the reality of Advent is not that Jesus made His home with humanity so I could get a house of my own. He made His home with us so I along with so many others could find our home in Him”. His words spoke powerfully into my own life in the way I look for security in places of strength – in the safety of social distancing, the promise of a vaccine, the security of our borders.

All these things are good and needed, but each of them can be undone in a moment. What is needed is a bedrock of security that never wavers and cannot be undone by the winds of chance. Christmas is a time when we are brought back to a real and definite moment in time when God stepped into our space and came to live among us as a baby. One of the biblical writers puts it this way, as he speaks of Jesus: The Word became flesh and made his home among us. God entered our time and space to be one of us and to settle in our midst. And he did it so that we could find our home with God. It’s a big call to make – but one of the blessings of Christmas is that when we welcome Jesus into our lives and find our home with God, then we find an enduring place of safety, security, peace and rest. Surely, we are not immune to the pandemics of life and the turmoil of these kind of events bring. However, there is in the midst of them, the calm assurance that God’s care is toward us because at the first Christmas God made his home with us. Whatever you might face this Christmas, whatever is creating uncertainty or stress, is better carried by being at rest with God. This Christmas, come home and draw near to Jesus who brings us near to God.

Student army cleans gravesite Jenny Nicholson The student volunteer army (SVA) was cleaning gravesites and drains at the St John’s Anglican Church in Wakefield last Wednesday. “We asked the community and this project at the church popped up,” said Jayden Vibert, a year six pupil at Wake-
field School. This was a result of the school opting into a nationwide project set up by the Student Volunteer Army to mobilise a new generation of volunteers. The church grounds on Edwards Road in Wakefield are cared for by volunteers, so the 90 students led by Jayden were very much appreciated.
“This is a historic place, and a lot of the children’s roots are here with ancestors buried here,” said St John’s vicar Don Moses. Don says that during a planning meeting one child pointed out her great grandmother’s grave. Another student asked him if there really were dead people there.

The man behind the stump on Lower Queen Street David Otterson Brown Francis Otterson arrived in Nelson in 1842 with his wife Jane and infant daughter Alice on the Lord Auckland, having invested in the NZ Land Company’s scheme. They brought with them buildings and goods and set up a General Merchant business at Auckland Point; their house, a warehouse which included the Colony’s first Bond Store, also building the first extended pier for direct unloading of coastal vessels and, with the neighbouring business of Morrison and Sclanders, the first wharf crane at the port. Otterson’s town office in Bridge Street was used for the produce display by the infant Agricultural & Horticultural Society and was also the site of the initial Ro-
man Catholic Mass on the visit of Bishop Pompalier in 1844. The Otterson’s had by this time closed their merchant business to concentrate on developing their rural allocation at Waimea East (now Richmond, in fact the 200 acres roughly occupied by the Showgrounds and Oakwoods today). After clearance and draining, this proved to be some of the most fertile land in the colony and his produce, particularly barley and potatoes, regularly received prizes at the A & H Shows of which he remained a committee member. His bullock team won prizes and it was his wheat that was used for the first grinding of the Nelson Flour Mill; Jane was given the credit for organising the first dairy in the district. Keen on extending these farming activities, Francis in 1852

Photo: Supplied. accepted the offer to take up the 22,000 acre Mt Gladstone grazing lease on the Awatere River that Stafford had failed to develop, and sent a manager and a beginning flock of merino to the site. Francis was one of the initial JP magistrates for Nelson and was prominent in local body and
community affairs, culminating in his being elected to the first Provincial Government in 1853. He had also established the Richmond Cattle Fair Association. In 1854 Francis was unfortunately drowned in the Wairau River while on his way to the Awatere. The Nelson Examiner reported
that his funeral was the most numerous held in the colony to that time, his body, borne by 8 farm workers....a hundred horsemen followed....four abreast...as the procession entered the town of Nelson, extending nearly a quarter of a mile. Jane and their family, now of five children, moved back into Nelson leaving behind the grove of blue gums Francis had planted, the remnant of which is the bare stump on Lower Queen Street, once one of NZ’s 100 Historic protected trees. Rostrevor, their homestead, was sold with the farm and in 1989 was relocated to Ngatimoti. Last year the Nelson A & P Association recognised Francis’ work in establishing their concept, by naming the Queen Street frontage of their Richmond Park Otterson Woodland.

Local woman featured in breast cancer film Jenny Nicholson Local woman Steph Kristofski was one of four women who shared their journey with breast cancer in the film ‘Though I Walk’, which was on Sky channel 202 last week. “Breast cancer is a brutal attack on a woman’s femininity,” says Steph. There was one day when she looked in the mirror and felt so ugly. Scars, loss of hair, black bags under her eyes, grey skin, tubes from the site with blood flowing
through and removal of her ovaries were all part of her journey. “I felt insecure and massive grief and no longer felt the woman I was,” says Steph. Her body no longer fitted what society calls beautiful. The film looks at the issue of beauty and self-esteem. Steph now has a new idea of beauty. She says beauty was when her husband Pete never recoiled when he saw the scars and never once made her feel less of a woman. Steph says that
is beauty and what love is, and beauty is also accepting yourself and knowing your identity in God. Sharing her story left her feeling vulnerable. But she has learned it’s safe to be vulnerable when she keeps her identity in God. “It takes courage to be vulnerable but there is something beautiful and freeing about it because you aren’t hiding stuff,” she says. All the women agreed the hardest part of the journey was trusting God with their children. They were ok with having to walk the journey but didn’t want it to touch their children. The question was asked how a good God could allow their suffering.
How they got to the point of trusting God and trusting He is good is a major theme in the film. Two of the women had big dreams that cancer interrupted. That was something they had to work through. For Steph, laying her dreams down is something she is still working on. “That’s an ongoing process of trust that sometimes I’m doing in a very wobbly, messy way,” she says. He gets into the pain and mess and sits in it with us. Then it’s doable. That’s a miracle,” says Steph. ‘Though I walk’ is the produced by filmmaker Kirsty Cameron. It can be viewed on Shine TV on demand.

Conversations throughout the region between Tasman District Council representatives and the public have pointed to five areas the community are particularly invested in. 850 people were spoken to and over 2000 comments have been looked through. The key areas raised were housing affordability, sustainable growth, transport options, biodiversity, and fresh water management “We have been overwhelmed with the amount of interest,” said Tasman District Council’s Environmental Policy Manager, Barry Johnson. The conversations and comments online were a result of the TDC asking for public input concerning the Tasman Environmental Plan. The two major focuses were what makes our region great and what Barry Johnson are the big issues. This is the first time in around twenty years the community has had the opportunity to have such an influence in plans. They have included asking for ideas from children. “Kids are pretty insightful when it comes to planning,” Barry said. While they had 21 meetings in various communities, the issues that came up were fairly consistent. Richmond residents commented more on transport congestion, but smaller communities also raised the issue having noticed the busy roads when they come into town. “Then there is the rampant rate at which houses are going up, the difficulty to buy a house and the shortage of accommodation,” said Barry This is balanced with our region having some of the best land in the country for growing fruit and vegetables. The conundrum is how to meet housing needs while also needing the land for crops. Barry said that what they are doing now consulting the public isn’t compulsory, but there is more flexibility and ability to change at this stage. “It’s not the council plan, it’s Tasman’s plan,” he said. Based on other councils throughout the country, the process takes six to ten years. The council is committed to keeping people up-to-date. “The challenge is that because it’s such a long process, how do we keep people engaged,” he said. “What we hear from our communities now will make a difference for how we look after our district for generations to come,” said mayor Tim King. Feedback is still being taken online until December 11.

maidens were included to emphasise the discipline of the bowling, which is reflected by the fact that only one catch was made in the field, although the now customary run out was also effected. For the College, only Will Bixley (27) and Kaleb McKay with 30 contributed with the bat, and when Wanderers-Motueka were three wickets down for 20 in the seventh over it did look a testing total. However, a fourth wicket stand by Andrew Beatson and Alex Brogan produced 117 runs and took the game completely away from the visitors. It was the ideal partnership, risk-free and paced to perfection, even with the rain interruption that occurred in the middle of their innings. When Brogan was bowled by Bixley for 67 only two further runs were required, and Logan Ogilvie duly obliged for his team to take a very meritorious victory. Alex Brogan was justifiably awarded MVP for his batting contribution, but it was a complete team performance and extremely satisfying for cap-

Wanderers-Motueka premier pick up crucial win Taylors Wanderers Sports club cricket teams performed well again last weekend with an extremely pleasing effort produced by the WanderersMotueka premier team in the match at Brightwater against the Nelson College 1st XI. With Harsh Visavadiya absent on representative duty, the combined team was aware of the need for a complete team performance if they were to improve on the drawn result when the two teams met in the opening game of the season. Bowling first on the home pitch, the Wanderers-Mot bowling attack was a little wayward in the first 10 overs, but then settled into their work, challenging the College batsmen and restricting the run rate to finally dismiss the students in the 44th over for 142. Jackson Harris was the pick of the bowlers with four for 15 off his nine overs, but well supported by Logan Ogilvie and Boe Bamford who recorded identical figures of two for 31 off eight overs. Skipper Hayden Ingham bowled three overs and conceded a mere three runs, two

The talented Wanderers utility back is believed to be the first player from the club to play international rugby after she played for Samoa against Tonga in Auckland after trialling for the squad over Labour Weekend at the conclusion of her Tasman Mako Farah Palmer Cup commitments “I loved it,” she says. “It was a whole different atmosphere and I just loved being in the culture and the environment.” “We now have a World Cup qualifying tournament that I really want to be part of,” says the 24-year-old. “We aren’t sure where that

tain Hayden Ingham and his young team. A feature of the second grade match played at Lower Ngawhatu was the bowling performance by Daniel Culverwell in taking five wickets, including a hat trick, against Stoke-Nayland in the rain affected match. The Taylors Wanderers team were in huge trouble at 33 for five when the deluge arrived. Meanwhile, before the heavy rain hit Stoke, the Wanderers T25 College team were able to score 211 with Eddie Swain, Blake Hobbs and Cameron McLean leading the way, before dismissing WTTU Tigers for 78 in the 19th over, with Malindri Dinalankara standing out with a fine 29 off 24 balls. Noah Lausen again shone with the ball for Wanderers, taking three wickets for 5 runs. In all, 13 Wanderers teams were in action over the weekend across all ages and most games were able to be completed before the rain arrived, and the club looks forward to another full round of matches this weekend.

Waimea volleyball teams impress in Invercargill Jacob Page Reporter

Waimea College volleyballers found plenty of success at South Island junior tournaments in Invercargill over the past week. Jobe McAuley and Sebastian Lams earned a bronze medal at the Year 9 South Island beach event. When it came to indoor volley-
ball, Waimea College had consistent performances across all four of their teams with three squads making the top six and a year 9 team showing plenty of promise for the future. The Junior Gold boys finished fourth in division one. The girls finished sixth out of a very strong field. The Junior Green boys finished sixth in division one and the girls finished 16th in the top division.
It is a stunning rags to riches story for the Mako, after being on the brink of extinction just a few years ago. It was a far tougher road to glory this season, after an unbeaten 2019, Tasman dropped three regular season games in 2020. The Mako would lose stars Will Jordan, Sevu Reece, Shannon Frizzell and Tyrel Lomax to All Blacks duty while Ethan Blackadder and Pari Pari Parkinson sat out the campaign through injury. Despite the adversity, the Mako defied the odds and has cemented its status as provincial rugby powerhouses. At the heart of the side was its most influential player, skipper David Havili. Asked what makes this side so special, Havili is quick to point out its success goes far beyond the players. “It’s the whole region not just the team, the support we get around here, it’s the management, the peo-
ple we have backing us, and everyone buys into what we want to achieve. The year we have had has been unbelievable and I’m just so grateful to be able to share this moment with my close mates.” There is an old saying in sport that ‘if you want to be the best, you have

Freedom Camping Bylaw changes now in effect Following recent consultation and hearings the following amendments to the bylaw have been agreed to by the Council: 1. The permitted freedom camping site at Waitapu Bridge has been removed from the bylaw. This site is now under the control of NZTA and will be managed by them with input from Manawhenua Ki Mohua. The Council no longer has jurisdiction in this area. 2. The permitted freedom camping site at Taupata Point has been removed from the bylaw. This site will no longer be serviced with toilets and bins. These amendments mean that there are no nonself-contained freedom camping sites on Councilcontrolled land in Golden Bay. Self-contained vans meeting the applicable standard may still camp in the allocated spaces at Motupipi car park and in other areas as indicated in Clause 6.2 of the bylaw. 3. The use of Decks Reserve in Motueka by nonself-contained vehicles has been removed from the bylaw. Only self-contained vehicles meeting the applicable standard may camp there in the allocated spaces. 4. The freedom camping site at Alexander Bluff will be modified to create a specific area for freedom camping with marked spaces. There will be a limit of 40 vehicles allowed at the site.

The Summer Events Guide for 2020/21 is out now. A copy should have arrived in your letterbox or you can grab one from your any Council offices and libraries. The programme is packed with great reasons to be in the Top of the South over the holiday season for locals and visitors alike. Many of our favourite events from previous years are back – who doesn’t love taking the little ones to the Teddy Bears’ Picnic or packing a hamper of goodies for an evening under the stars at Summer Movies al Fresco. And then there’s the Sarau Festival, Tasman Skatepark Tour – and much, much more. Grab your copy of the guide, or check it out on our TS EVEN DEENTS website, tasman.govt.nz GUEIV GUIDE and don’t miss any of the fun this summer. 2020 2021

Temporary bus stop changes
Temporary chlorination of Richmond water
The Queen Street bus stops will be closed on Wednesday 30 December due to a road closure in place for the Richmond Market Day. A temporary bus stop will be set up on Talbot Street (opposite PAK’n’SAVE). Alternatively, catch the bus on the Salisbury Road bus stop between Talbot and Florence Street. We apologise for any inconvenience.
As part of the Champion/Salisbury Road roundabout upgrade, work is underway on the water mains and other services. As the water network is at a higher risk of contamination when we work on the mains, the Richmond water supply is being temporarily treated with chlorine to be sure it stays safe to drink. Chlorination will be in effect until 21 December 2020 and will be needed again in January at a date still to be confirmed. You can read more about water chlorination on our website, tasman.govt.nz/chlorination.
Summer water sampling underway We monitor a range of sites throughout summer so we can be assured of good water quality for swimming and watersports. However, there can be issues at times, especially following heavy rain when there is a chance of contamination from run-off. To play it safe, you shouldn’t swim in discoloured water, for at least the first 24 hours – and preferably 36 hours – after heavy rainfall. See local water quality information on our website, tasman.govt.nz/link/swimming-water. Toxic algae We also keep a close eye on rivers for toxic algae (which could be harmful to pets or children if eaten) during the summer months and post results to our website. See tasman.govt.nz/link/toxic-algae. You can help us keep on top of it by reporting large mats of algae when you see them. Email trevor.james@tasman.govt.nz with a photo of the algae attached, or call us on 03 543 8400.
The bylaw amendments came into effect this week on 7 December 2020. Copies of the bylaw are available on the Council website and at all Council offices and libraries.
