Hospice struck by thieves Phillip Rollo
Two mining lamps have been stolen from the window of a Queen St thrift shop that raises money for the Nelson Hospice. Hospice Shop manager Karen MacKenzie says a volunteer sales assistant noticed they had been taken on January 3 some time between 9:30am and 11am. Karen had already collected a list of five customers that had indicated interest in purchasing the two miner’s flame safety lamps, which at the time, were still waiting to be price checked. As a pair, Karen believes they are worth around $350. “We spent quite a lot of time looking into them and I had all these people waiting to buy them,” she says. “When we put them into the window we had someone come in and say they’d pay $100 for them right there and then, but we hadn’t priced them at that stage.”
The Hospice Shop has a photo on the front window showing the two lamps which have serial numbers imprinted on them. One of the serial numbers is 83073 while the other was too difficult to make out in the photo. Karen believes they will be easier to spot because of the serial numbers and has been checking internet auction websites TradeMe and eBay regularly to see if they will turn up. The lamps are believed to be at least 30 years old. The Hospice Shop employs just one staff member, the rest of its employees are volunteers. It operates by selling items that have been donated by the public. All of the funds, other than over-head costs, are then passed on to the Hospice in Manuka St, Nelson. “I think with what has happened here it is almost a community responsibility to try and help us SEE PAGE 4

Races as popular as ever Thousands of people turned out for the Nelson Harness Racing Club’s annual summer meet over the weekend. From the fashionable to families, the two days of racing entertained over 7000 people in the sun over two days. The horses were only half the fun with peo-
ple enjoying picnics, contests and entertainment throughout the day and Nelson Harness Racing Club President John McKenzie says the popular event was a huge success this year. “We were absolutely thrilled to bits with the support of the event by Nelson people and holi-
daymakers. The grandstand was chock-a-block and it was great to see families enjoying themselves.” Organiser Chris Butler says the event was a huge success, with fantastic weather adding to the SEE PAGE 8 Heritage Barn with Woodshed 10.5m x 11m x 2.7m with Awning & 2 Roller Doors
