Hospice struck by thieves Phillip Rollo
Two mining lamps have been stolen from the window of a Queen St thrift shop that raises money for the Nelson Hospice. Hospice Shop manager Karen MacKenzie says a volunteer sales assistant noticed they had been taken on January 3 some time between 9:30am and 11am. Karen had already collected a list of five customers that had indicated interest in purchasing the two miner’s flame safety lamps, which at the time, were still waiting to be price checked. As a pair, Karen believes they are worth around $350. “We spent quite a lot of time looking into them and I had all these people waiting to buy them,” she says. “When we put them into the window we had someone come in and say they’d pay $100 for them right there and then, but we hadn’t priced them at that stage.”
The Hospice Shop has a photo on the front window showing the two lamps which have serial numbers imprinted on them. One of the serial numbers is 83073 while the other was too difficult to make out in the photo. Karen believes they will be easier to spot because of the serial numbers and has been checking internet auction websites TradeMe and eBay regularly to see if they will turn up. The lamps are believed to be at least 30 years old. The Hospice Shop employs just one staff member, the rest of its employees are volunteers. It operates by selling items that have been donated by the public. All of the funds, other than over-head costs, are then passed on to the Hospice in Manuka St, Nelson. “I think with what has happened here it is almost a community responsibility to try and help us SEE PAGE 4

Races as popular as ever Thousands of people turned out for the Nelson Harness Racing Club’s annual summer meet over the weekend. From the fashionable to families, the two days of racing entertained over 7000 people in the sun over two days. The horses were only half the fun with peo-
ple enjoying picnics, contests and entertainment throughout the day and Nelson Harness Racing Club President John McKenzie says the popular event was a huge success this year. “We were absolutely thrilled to bits with the support of the event by Nelson people and holi-
daymakers. The grandstand was chock-a-block and it was great to see families enjoying themselves.” Organiser Chris Butler says the event was a huge success, with fantastic weather adding to the SEE PAGE 8 Heritage Barn with Woodshed 10.5m x 11m x 2.7m with Awning & 2 Roller Doors

App tracks down stolen iPhone Andrew Board A Nelson man’s stolen iPhone was retrieved after the thief turned it on, pointing the way to his house in Westport via the ‘find my iphone’ app which locates lost phones via its built-in GPS unit. Marcus Lovell says he must have left the phone in the back of a taxi last Thursday night and was gutted when he couldn’t find it the next day. He was resigned to losing it forever when the thief – who turned out to be another taxi passenger – turned on the phone which was located by the app when Marcus searched for it. He says he couldn’t believe his good luck. “I mean seriously, the guy can’t be too smart. He threw away the sim card thinking that’s how it could be tracked but that’s not how iPhones work. I’m rapt I got it back.” Marcus posted the address of the thief on his Facebook page and explained what had happened.
Nelson man Marcus Lovell is reunited with his iPhone after it was stolen from a taxi and found at the thief ’s house in Westport. When Aaron Ewers, an old school friend from Waimea College now living in Reefton, saw the post, he called some friends in Westport to see if they knew who lived there.
One of the friends recognised the car in the driveway and went to have a word to him and shortly after some choice words were exchanged Marcus’ phone was back in friendly hands. “So I put that post on after 5 o’clock Saturday afternoon after him turning the phone on at around 3pm. Aaron’s mate had the phone back by 7:30. How unbelievable is that? Thank god for ‘find my iPhone’, Facebook, and burly miners,” he says. He says losing the phone was like breaking up with a girlfriend and he was most upset about some holiday photos that he hadn’t saved. He had filed a report with police and says he will be happy to tell them not to bother looking anymore. The ‘find my iphone’ app can be bought through itunes and takes just a couple of minutes to set up says Marcus. “That’s a $1000 phone and I think the app cost me $1.29, so it’s been money well spent.”

Laser aimed at chopper
This go-kart was stolen from Tony’s Engineering two days before Christmas.
Go-kart nicked from yard Phillip Rollo
The go-kart a Brightwater engineer built for his grandchildren to use at the beach was stolen just two days before Christmas. Tony Inwood, of Tony’s Engineering on Ellis St, noticed it had been taken from the yard when he and his oldest grandson went to work on it over the holidays. “I went to get it and it had gone. I thought ‘stuff.’ We’ve got our own diesel here and people are always coming in to get it to buy,” he says. “Someone has obviously been in to see it to know it is here but you can’t pin it on someone.” Tony is offering a reward for any information leading to the return of the go-kart. Because he built the go-kart, Tony believes he could spot it even if it was broken down into parts, because of some of the unique items on it, including the back wheels. “I’d recognise those wheels anywhere. It might be hidden on a farm or a paddock or anything like that.” If you have information on this stolen go-kart, phone Tony on 027 644 9941 or contact the police. “We would really appreciate your help finding this for them.”

A Richmond man has been charged after he shone a laser light at the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter from his balcony in the early hours of Boxing Day. The 43 year old faces a maximum penalty of 12 months imprisonment and a $10,000 fine for the criminal offence under civil aviation law. Jarrod Colbourne, a pilot for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter says an onboard infra red unit was able to spot the man on his balcony near Three Brothers Cnr. The pilot on board made contact with the police and circled around the man’s property until they arrived. “They were returning from a search and as they were heading over Three Brothers Cnr, the operator noticed it. ing over the top they could see the person out on the deck.” Jarrod says a laser light can be “quite damaging” to the eyes. “It’s also quite distractive for the pilot and crew, which is the main problem.” He was unaware of this happening before in Nelson, but knew of an incident when someone had been shining a laser light at players during the Rugby World Cup. “I’m not sure if they’ve ever shone them at an aircraft in Nelson before. I’m not sure what is motivation was, it was quite a bizarre thing to do really.” Because of a good relationship with other emergency services, Jarrod believed it was a smart decision to aide the police by circling above the house.

The largest collection of classic and vintage motorcycles in New Zealand had a certain feel of nostalgia to it. Ask any member of the Nelson Classic and Vintage Motorcyle Club and they will tell you the reason they own a two wheeler that's more than 25 years old is because it reminds them of their youth. Murray Hunt has restored nine classic motorcycles in his life time and currently possesses a 1950 Triumph 650 Thunderbird and a 1960 T120C Bonneville. He had Triumphs when he was a teenager for two reasons; they were the only ones he could afford and they were the motorcycles that the girls liked. "When I was a teenager they were all the rage. I've had a Triumph since 1959. They were the ones that used to get the women," he laughs, speaking to the Waimea Weekly at the club's annual showcase, held at the Stoke Memorial Hall on the weekend. Murray had his first motorcycle for five years but the longest he has kept onto one was 33 years. Now in his retirement, Murray says he enjoys restoring motorcycles mostly because of the chase in finding parts that were made so long ago. The
internet has made life a little easier when searching for spares but local business British Spares is usually the first port of call. "They're very good but also swap meets too. A lot of this stuff on the internet has been reproduced. The original parts are still the best." Most of the restored classics are worth more than current day motorcycles but they are a lot harder to handle with tighter steering. "Technology is better than old technology but I still find it nicer to ride and old bike." Manning the barbecue at the showcase, club president Peter Wood says the club welcomed around 450 visitors through on the weekend, which was similar to previous years' figures. "It's a good turnout. Sunday is when we had the swap meet, which brings more people into the show," he says. The showcase is held to help fundraise events throughout the calendar year. The club is the largest of its kind in the country, which is partly due to its loose restrictions. Some similar clubs in other provinces tend to specialize in certain makes, rather than allowing members that own anything that is more than 25 years old. For more details on the club and what it gets up to, email nelsonclassicmc@hotmail.co.nz.

Jazz rocks Washbourn Sinead Ogilvie Crowds of people enjoyed a taste of jazz in the park on Saturday as the Woolaston Nelson Jazz and Blues Festival ended on a high note. The annual festival, held over six days, saw thousands of Nelsonians attend performances of local jazz talent at venues all over the region. Festival organiser Liam Ryan says the jazz in the park event held at Washbourn Gardens was a favourite each year due to its community atmosphere and it attracted around 4000 people on the weekend. The great weather meant people enjoyed picnics,
Local artists prepare for garden exhibition Art buffs will have the chance to view unique work from over 50 local artists at an annual event held at Queen’s Gardens this weekend. Art Group Nelson will exhibit a selection of their pieces from glass work, paintings, wood work and carvings to the public in an open air showcase providing the community a chance to view and invest in local talent. Artists Marg Rawlins of Richmond and Connie Charlton of Enner Glynn are both looking forward to the event which Marg says will feature a huge variety of art. As well as sharing her own work and viewing what others have been working on, she hopes to sell a few pieces over the weekend. “It’s just great to think someone may want to take my work home and have it on their wall.” The exhibition will be held this Saturday and Sunday between 10am and 4pm at the Hardy St end of Queen’s Gardens.
food and drink in the afternoon sun while enjoying performances from local musicians such as the Nelson Jazz Club Big Band says Liam. Nelson blues band Boogie Train got people up and dancing well into the evening with the help of a group of enthusiastic Ceroc dancers that drew in crowds to the front of the stage. Festival-goers Nigel and Catherine Bensemen say the jazz in the park event was something they enjoyed and looked forward to every year and this year was no exception. “There’s a bubbly atmosphere here in the park and there are some great bands. It’s a really great event,” says Catherine.

Happy New Year to you all and welcome to 2013! We have all done very well, for if you are reading this you have survived the ‘end of the world as we know it’ and managed to struggle, all be it slightly wearily, into the ‘new age’ and all the new adventures and excitement that it brings. Our first adventure was the breakdown of the dishwasher. Not a good idea when you have a houseful but we took a deep breath, opened a good wine and soldiered on – a new one is on the horizon and will appear before the next influx all being well. ACC is off the hook as no one has yet tripped over the extra power cord or any of the many Christmas toys. I hope Father Christmas was good to you – he was very good to me and we had a wonderful time with family and friends. Very quiet around here now they have left – I was just getting into mashed banana and farex for breakfast at around 6.30am – toast and tea just doesn’t have the same appeal. Benjamin took his first steps while here, mainly thanks to the best present in the world – a push along horse – thanks Jim – it worked a treat. Nonno (grandad for Johnno) also had a good time as he installed his new outdoor kitchen – note I said his kitchen. Complete with four gas burners, hood, teppanyaki hotplate, side burners and the proverbial kitchen sink. Here’s me thinking that a five burner, one metre oven was enough – silly woman….. apparently, the common old ‘inside kitchen’ is so yesterday. I will also add that he has a Weber kettle cooker (he is Australian) and a smoker and lord knows what else hidden under cover on the back deck, but Nonno does enjoy the odd snack and can now even clean up, which is great. In the brochure there was a woman standing with a glass of something cold looking just lovely while the man welded the pans and peered into the lid etc. Looked like a good idea to me… We have had a lot of fun learning how to use this wondrous appliance and it does mean that we will now have the lighting fixed so Nonno can cook outside all year round instead of the current system which involves layers of clothing, a torch and a plate of steak or chops cooking away while he warms himself between forays in front of the fire. Now he will be able to stand outside all year round as I am sure there is a knob somewhere that he can use to keep warm. Needless to say, the poor old garden has been a
Sunbell petunias on John’s garden kitchen. bit neglected with all the excitement of paddling pool, balance bike, jolly jumper etc definitely taking precedence but the pots did get watered, with a bit of help, and the deadheading was done (yesterday). I do need to get out and trim back the scabiosa and the hellebores, and it is a good idea to take out the lower leaves of hostas as the snails love these and then move on around the garden. Keep checking ties on the tomatoes etc, in these winds dahlias and delphiniums can snap really easily also, so stakes are a good idea.
Tips
Thisks wee
• In the vege garden use small bamboo stake to help keep beans upright – they tend to break off in the winds if they don’t have a bit of support. • Keep planting marigolds to assist in keeping nematodes away from the roots of your plants. • Apply liquid fertiliser from time to time (seaweed based is good or a liquid blood and bone) to assist growth, and a spray with Seasol will help strengthen seedlings. • Keep planting beans – mine are cropping well and another lot are on the way. • Water tomatoes from the base if possible, deep watering is best about three times a week. • Keep sowing snow peas for a regular supply, also carrots, leeks and bok choy. Keep this in a cooler part of the garden so it does not bolt. • Mulch, Mulch, Mulch. Use lawn clippings, compost etc to help prevent moisture loss around the vege patch. If you are like me you are still in holiday mode so do enjoy this good weather while you can – the garden will always be there and there is the whole of tomorrow not touched yet!

Watching movie stars under the stars
Locals have been enjoying movies beneath the stars as well as watching them on the big screen with Summer Movies Al Fresco in full swing at local parks and outdoor venues around Nelson and Tasman. The annual outdoor movie screenings are open to the public and feature a selection of classic movies on an inflatable big screen, perfectly designed for bean bag, pyjamas and deck chair viewing says organiser Antony Hodgson. An intimate crowd gathered at Washbourn Gardens in Richmond on Sunday night and despite a brief thunder and lightning storm threatening the screening of 1956 classic High Society, the show went on with families and friends settling in for the evening after the rain passed.
The outdoor moves are always well attended says Antony and he puts their success down to a combination of watching a movie in a great outdoor setting and the sense of joint experience the public gets. “It’s about strangers sitting next to each other talking and the uniqueness of being able to come down in your sleeping bag.” Stoke local Jacinda says she and husband Josef Beyer-Rieger attend the movies every year and enjoy the relaxed atmospehere of watching films outside. “It’s great and it’s also a chance to watch old movies we’ll probably not see again.” The movies are viewed on an inflatable big screen at different locations throughout the region and will continue until January 28.

Students deserved special flight: Just seen in the Waimea Weekly “Your Voice” that some people are complaining about the Waimea College students with a 100 per cent attendance record that were flown around Nelson thanks to the generous donation of a local helicopter owner. Maybe the kids got sick in the school holidays or on the weekend and spent that time in bed getting better so it didn’t cut into school time. If they did manage to get through a whole year without getting sick, then good on them for staying healthy and avoiding those so called germs. Tania Clarke-Wastney. How did you spend New Year’s Eve? Sleeping as only been out of hospital for three days. Simon Scowen. Being sober driver for my parents how sad. Amy Aitken. Dealing with miss 18 months having a tantrum. Anna Mount. We did the Cable Bay walk with friends, stunning scenery and excellent exercise. Caron Proctor.
Sunday night’s stormy weather show: House got hit by lightening out here in Wakefield, terrifying. Bronté Marcella White. From Mapua it was out over towards Mt Arthur, thunder was above the house loudest I have heard in years. Adi Page. Got some amazing cloud formation photos! Pauline Hadfield. Lots of lightning and thunder, cool looking clouds, only problem is the cat is terrified and won’t come out from under the house. Jo Van Berkel. Magical, althought youngest a little spooked. Still going quite surreal considering the sun is shining. Great way to clear the beach! Jacinda Stevenson. Amazing from my house 2 get some photos without getting my work camera wet lol. Hands up if you have ever been to a New Zealand Superstock Championship! For those of you sitting with your hands down get along to the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway on the weekend of January 11 and January 12 when the Nelson Speedway Association host the New Zealand Home Loans NZ Superstock Championship to see what you have been missing. One of the best things about this championship is that like Forrest Gumps’ box of chocolates you never really know what you are going to get. One race can be pure speed and
amazing driving skills, the next can be a brutal full on assault on fellow competitors. One thing you can be sure of is that the best of the country’s Superstock drivers will put on one heck of a show, with their purpose built full contact race cars, and the crowd will go home from each night absolutely buzzing. If you think I’m exaggerating just a little bit in order to entice you trackside, ask one of your mates with their hands up what keeps them travelling from one end of New Zealand to the other to attend what is arguably one of the premier events on the speedway calendar. So how does it work? The drivers get their first taste of Nelson clay when the club holds an

On Friday the competitors present their vehicles for a thorough scrutineering to ensure they are safe and meet the strict specifications set out by Speedway New Zealand. This is also a free public event and is being held opposite the WOW Museum. Please note that Mitre 10 Mega are adamant they do NOT want people parking in their car park so a spectator parking area is adjacent to the scrutineering venue. The racing gets under way at 7pm Friday January 11 when the field of approximately 75 cars
is split into four groups. These groups then race three heats to accumulate points. The top six point scorers from each group automatically go through to the finals on Saturday night. The final two places will be filled by the top two placed in a second chance repercharge race. On Saturday night the top 26 drivers compete in another three heat championship. All points from the previous night are wiped. As with qualifying their start positions are determined by a marble draw which will be held on the infield after introductions. Every driver will have a front, middle and rear start. The driver with the most points gets to carry the 1NZ number for the following twelve months.

Hot favourite Jason Rulz took all the limelight at Richmond Park over the weekend, winning the Nelson Pine Industries Nelson Cup Handicap Pace 3000m, following an earlier victory in the prelude on Friday. His performances were a stark contrast to that of the locally owned horses, with soon-to-be mother Jass picking up a second place in the Christian Cullen Canterbury Mares Series Mobile Pace over 1609m, claiming the only notable highlight. The Robert Stuart-trained mare was predicted to be a place bolter in the Nelson Cup on day two but could only manage a seventh place finish, well behind the Ricky May driven Jason Rulz. Jackaroo Bromac, Lively Shard and Tijuana Bromac made up the rest of the top four.

Exciting backs highlight team announcement Phillip Rollo A youthful back-line will look to spark the Tasman team to its best ever finish at this weekend’s Pub Charity National Sevens Championship in the absence of star player Tevita Koloamatangi. Speaking just days before the Queenstown tournament, Tasman captain Shawn Begg highlighted the impact that his team-mate’s loss would have on the Mike Kerrisk-coached side, but says the team is still confident it can beat South Canterbury and one of either Wellington or Auckland to progress into the next phase of the competition. “If we can get ourselves into the top draw for the second day then anything can happen,” says the former Tasman Makos halfback. “We’ve got quite a young team mixed with a bit of experience so we’re pretty excited. Tevita is a massive loss to us, he’ll be hard to replace.” The news that vice-captain Dan Hyatt would also miss the trip south means Tasman will only carry three forwards, those coming in the form of Tasman Mako Vern Fredericks, Tasman Under-20 flanker Dan Hytongue and former Nelson College first XV flanker Daniel Baxter. But Shawn believes the key strength will be the young back-line, with speedsters Ryan Setephano, James Lowe, Mitchell Scott and Kim Bateman likely to see plenty of game time. Sione
Holani, Kaide Whiting, Trael Joass and Fletcher Matthews make up the rest of the squad. With one more year left at Waimea College, Fletcher will be one of the youngest players to feature at the tournament. “Our strength is our backline but we should be quite a fit team down there too. Being young and having nothing to lose and without many other teams seeing us play, the other teams won’t know what to expect from us.” Shawn will also act as a co-coach for the Tasman women’s team alongside Cyril Collier. The women have added some new faces to their squad since surprising Otago at the southern zone qualifying tournament in Timaru late last year to qualify for Queenstown, but Shawn admits it will be a big step up, as it is the first time the side has ever played at a national tournament. “No one thought we would even qualify, but they deserve to be there. I think they’re capable of mixing it with the North Island teams. They could knock a few teams over and they’ll be right in there.” With rugby sevens now included in the Olympic Games, New Zealand selectors will be keeping an eye out for upcoming talent down in Queenstown. Both men’s and women’s tournaments will be broadcast live on Sky Sport 1 with the first match kicking off at 10:30am on Saturday January 12.
