Work begins on cinema complex Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Work has finally begun on a new cinema complex in Richmond, earmarked to be completed by late 2021. The development in Richmond West by Nelson company Gibbons will see a cinema complex as the main tenant in a commercial development near Lower Queen Street.
Silky Otter Cinemas will be the anchor tenant for the development. The cinema company launched it’s first cinema in Orakei Bay Village in Auckland, and currently has consent for another complex in Wigram, Christchurch. The new development is on a 5.53ha site in the fast-growing Richmond West development. The Richmond West area is set to have over 1,200 new homes, with a population of 4,000 by 2025,
along with 270 retirement dwellings being built nearby. Food and beverage businesses will also join the cinema complex, with plans for a standalone restaurant around the ‘village green’ which is expected to be a 1000 square metre green area for families. Along with the cinema and food offerings, the development will also include retail and office space. A new service station is also being developed across from
Berryfields Crossing, according to Gibbons. Gibbons CEO Scott Gibbons says that the company is proud to be bringing the first cinema to Richmond. “The feedback we have received from the public regarding the cinema has been extremely positive,” he says. “We are also very excited to be providing complimentary offerings to the cinema as part of the first stage of the development in
the form of food and beverage, retail and commercial professional services space. “The vision we have for the development is one of providing a convenient accessible centre that is inclusive of the entire family and people of all ages to come and enjoy.” Gibbons recently completed a development on Queen Street, opposite the Warehouse, with Sals, Zambrero, and Aki Kitchen, which opened this year.

Lions get creative for fundraising Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Lockdowns, social distancing, and continued restrictions mean that traditional ways of fundraising are out the window. While they haven’t been able to hold sausage sizzles or other staple fundraisers this year, the Richmond Lions club has come up with a new, colourful way to raise funds. A children’s playhouse, built by Charlie Rhodes with the help of several other Richmond Lions members, will be raffled off to raise money for Child Cancer. “It was just an idea, something to fill in the winter months,” Charlie says. “We started towards the end
of June, it was finished a few weeks ago,” Selling firewood has meant The Richmond Lions were still able to raise $7,000. The club fundraises throughout the year to donate to several local causes, including the Fifeshire Foundation which brings relief to those in hardship and facing domestic crisis within our community, Nelson Tasman Hospice, as well as Camp Quality NZ. The Lions Clubs have a partnership with other volunteer groups for Camp Quality which works with children aged 5 - 16 who are living with cancer. Now that it is completed, the children’s playhouse will be on display around Richmond, with details of how locals can purchase raffle tickets.

Covid slows big auction Matt McCrorie A Charity Auction organised by Nelson College has been postponed, due to concerns around Alert Levels. The new date for the Auction is now Thursday, October 29. Organiser Steve Page says that the delay is based around the uncertainty with crowd numbers that Alert Level 2 provides. “A lot of people have put a lot of work into this event, so we have to take the alert levels into account,” he says. Last month the prize pool for the auction reached a record $50,000, with businesses and individuals from around the
region donating prizes to raise money to raise awareness for mental health issues. Trends Kitchen are the auction’s lead sponsor, donating the design and installation of a kitchen fit-out worth up to $20,000. Other donations including a one-day hunting trip to Glazebrook Station, with airlift by Helicopter, and a 6-berth motorhome hire for seven says from Discover New Zealand, along with a $3000 bed from Bedpost. The auction, organised by Nelson College students and parents, is aiming to raise money to go towards The Key to Life Charitable Trust, which aims to effect a social change to how people
view mental health and suicide. It’s founder, Mike King, will be the guest of honour on the night and has said that all funds raised will be used in the local community. “Everything is on target, we just need permission to get more than 100 people together,” Steve says. Tickets, which include canapes and drinks, can be bought through the Nelson College office, 03-548 3099. Costs are $400 for table of 10, single tickets are $45. If you’d like to offer your support, please give Steve Page a call on 0275 449 448. A full list of auction items will appear in the Weeklies.

Backing for new school at Richmond West Jacqui Rawson Reporter
jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Part of the National Party’s education infrastructure package announced last week, will include a new primary school in the Richmond West housing development. “At the heart of the National policy on infrastructure is removing New Zealand’s historical just-in-time school building,” said National Party spokesperson for education, Nicola Willis in Richmond, last week. This is about ensuring families have good choices and, in this case, so that the school can be the heart of the community in Richmond West, said Nicola. She adds, we recognise that schools are very important in terms of the decision’s families make regard-
ing where they live. MP for Nelson, Nick Smith has been advocating to have a new school built with support from local families, 348 of which have signed a petition regarding a new school within the Richmond West development. Members of the public have raised concerns regarding air quality and the potential danger from the large reserve of methanol, a highly inflamable and explosive liquid, stored at the Tasman Pine Industries (TPI) site and its proximity to the proposed new school. OneSchool, formerly known as Westmount School, sits at the inlet end of Headingly Lane, just over 1km from TPI’s site. This is approximately the same distance as the proposed school will be. It’s inevitable that the largest timber processing facility going to have some associated smells because of the MDF and glue, but Nick says that he has no concerns regarding this. “I think it’s a non-issue,” says Nick. Adding that the current schools and facilities wouldn’t be there if it was an issue. The standards are set by the council and those high standards are being met by Tasman Pine Industries. Regarding Richmond Primary School principal, Tim Brenton’s concerns that a new school should be focused on a Intermediate school, Nick says he is committed to it being a primary school on this site. Nick says there are no other realistic options for families

Nelson Matters
Nelson has a key choice this election on transport. The Labour candidate backs Clearways along Tahunanui Drive/Rocks Road/Wakefield Quay and Waimea Rd. I back getting on and building the Nelson Inland Route and redeveloping Rocks Rd as a boulevard for walking, cycling and recreation. Nelson has a much clearer choice than in Election 2017. National in Government committed then to building and funding the Inland route, then called the Southern Link. Labour opposed it but did not offer an alternative. They have now nailed their flag to Clearways. These are additional lanes that can be used for parking during non-peak times
but cleared during peak traffic. Labour’s plan to add clearways would be awful for Nelson’s stunning waterfront. We have one of the most beautiful city coastlines in the world from Tahunanui Beach to the City enhanced by Fifeshire Rock, Haulashore Island and the historic wall and chained bollards. We had a taste of how good the waterfront could be without heavy traffic for cycling, running and walking during the Autumn Covid lockdown. The four lane clearway means losing this forever. The Clearways would also ruin waterfront facilities and businesses like the Boathouse, Nahm, The Boatshed, Harbour Light Bistro and
Styx Café. They are also awful for the 483 homes and 158 businesses on Tahunanui Drive, Waimea Road and Wakefield Quay. Many would have frontage taken off them as well as the loss of parking. This compares to 66 affected homes and 48 businesses on the Nelson Inland Route. Clearways also impact on more schools. Clearways have been shown not to work. We had a clearway in front of the Tahunanui shops but it had to be removed. Driver confusion and cars left parked made it too dangerous. We also need to learn from the experience on SH1 North of Wellington. Labour opposed Transmission Gully in 2002 and instead built
children crossing that road. Nick says he wants a new school opening in such a way that it does not impact on Richmond school. “We also need to make sure it’s well timed for the growing population occurring in Richmond West,” he says. “If we don’t get on and secure a site, it’ll be lost to houses and we’ll have lost the opportunity to have a
centrally located school. “It’s about education but it’s also about building a new community,” says Nick. Labour candidate, Rachel Boyack encourages parents and schools in Richmond and the surrounding area to get involved in the engagement process, so that their views and needs can be included in the Ministry of Education’s report.

clearways through Plimmerton. It did not work with many accidents and a huge cost each year in moving vehicles left parked at the wrong times. Wellington has now got on and built the $1 billion inland route of Transmission Gully to be opened next year. The Nelson Inland Route is a far better solution than clearways. It enables the coastal route to be redeveloped as a boulevard for walking, cycling and recreation. It will cost $80 million less than clearways. It’s more resilient to climate change. It will be transformational for the Tahunanui community. It impacts on far fewer properties. It will require careful design through the Victory
area to ensure we retain a cycleway and enhance this strong community. National gets roads built. We have previously done the Richmond Deviation, QEII Drive, the Stoke Bypass, the Hope Saddle and when last in Government, the Ruby Bay Bypass. We must keep up these investments to match our growing population. National’s announcement on Monday committing $210 million for the Rocks Road Boulevard and Nelson Inland Route gives Nelson a positive choice to save our beautiful waterfront and solve the major transport problems into our city. Conservation projects get funding Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The top of the South will get $630,000 in funding to aid conservation projects. Over $5 million of funding was announced by the Department of Conservation last week as part of its community fund, which has funded community led conservation projects since 2014. Ten groups across the Top of the South will receive funding, including Tasman Environmental Trust, which received funding for its battle for the banded
rail project, and the Takaka Hill Biodiversity Group Trust, for the Takaka Hill National Park Halo Predator Control Project. Tasman Environmental Trust will receive $113,426 to continue to plant and maintain eco sourced natives to restore banded rail habitat in the Waimea inlet. Battle for the Banded Rail project lead Kathryn Brownlie says that the funding is ‘fantastic.’ “This funding will allow us to keep going for another two years,” she says. More time for Chlorine Consultation
The Tasman District Council has extended the submission period for its proposal to permanently chlorinate water supplies around the district, including the Richmond water supply. The proposed changes are in line with the accepted water treatment practice around New Zealand and in developed countries. Residents can read more about the proposal at tasman.govt.nz/feedback or see a hard copy at all Tasman District Council and Libraries. Due to level 2 restrictions, public information sessions on the proposal were cancelled. Replacement sessions will be held over Zoom on Wednesday 16 September from 4:30pm. An oil spill closed a section of State Highway 6, on the Kawatiri-Murchison Highway, between Owen Valley West Road and Nuggety Creek Road, at Longford. According to police the incident was first reported at 7:45am on Wednesday, last week.
Staff from doctors’ surgeries across Nelson went on strike last week over a pay gap with health board staff. Primary Health Care Nurses (PHC) as well as administration and reception staff from GPs around Nelson Tasman joined thousands of colleagues across the country in strike action on Thursday. Gathering at key locations to picket for equal pay in line with District Health Board nurses, frustrated staff say they are being paid 10.6 per cent less. Wakefield Health Centre practice nurse Katelyn Carmody says it’s frustrating to not feel as valued as hospital nurses. “We’ve all got the same qualifications and we all work long hours, it’s just not fair that we are paid 10 per cent less. “We are the first port of call, when you wake up and you’re not feeling right, you call us.” Katelyn says being based in Wakefield means they see a lot of people who don’t want to go into the hospital. “We see people with lacerations and things like that, who pop in at 5 pm because they don’t want to head into the emergency department and we totally understand that. We don’t want to send people in who we can help.” She says their day begins at 8 am with triaging patients, trying to get people seen as well as things like bloods, diabetic reviews and IV medications.
Wakefield Primary Health Care Nurse Katelyn Carmody on Tahunanui Drive protesting a pay gap with other health board nurses. Photo: Supplied. “Our days are chocka block from start to finish but for some reason we are not valued the same as hospital staff.” She says the nurses at her practice have full support from their employer but says their hands are tied due to caps in place from the DHB. “We really want to stress our GPs are really for this, they are very supportive and it’s not a case of them not wanting us to be paid more but that they can’t. The change needs to come from the DHB.” New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) industrial advisor for the PHC sector Chris Wilson, says the situation is
simply not good enough considering negotiations have been going on for nearly a year. “We have been informed there have been discussions occurring in recent weeks about pay parity at a government level, but nothing tangible has yet been forthcoming. “The Government has known about the urgency of pay parity in PHC for at least a year, and to not pull out all stops to address the serious PHC recruitment and retention issues is beyond belief,” she says. Katelyn says they received a lot of support during the strike.

Woman gives kidney away to a stranger Charles Anderson About 18 months ago Richmond woman Rochelle Pont was on social media when a story popped up about someone needing a kidney transplant. The story told of how difficult life could be for people living on dialysis. “It struck a chord,” says Rochelle. So, she started investigating how to help. She did tests and research and then started seeing messaging about kidney transplants everywhere. “I thought ‘I’ve got two, I don’t need two, so let’s help someone”. She looked into doing a ‘kidney exchange’ programme for people who donated altruistically. It meant that someone in the recipient’s family would have to donate a kidney at some point in the future. But then she got a call. They had found someone who was a match.
They also paid for her flights and accommodation in Wellington. “This is something you can do to help just by taking some time. It needs to be put out there so people know. You might not be able to help someone in your family, but you might be able to help someone down the road.” Rochelle says she doesn’t mind that she doesn’t know who has her kidney. “I’m happy knowing there is someone out there who doesn’t have to have dialysis this week.” There are hundreds of people waiting for a healthy organ in New Zealand and Rochelle Pont says she is glad she was able to give one of anybody in good health with her kidneys away to someone who needed it. It’s been great to see how well local businesses are responding to our move into Alert Level 2. A big thanks to the local businesses, large and small, that I’ve seen using the NZ COVID Tracer QR code poster. I understand that not everybody has a smart phone — a written daily record works just as well. It’s important to keep a record of where you’ve been in case the virus shows up in our community. As well as displaying the QR code poster, the attention to physical distancing and other hygiene measures introduced by local businesses has been heartening.

New partnership to improve roads The Tasman District Council has moved to an alliance contract with contractor Downer, who for the last three years has managed the largest of the Tasman District Council’s road maintenance contracts. An alliance contract means that both groups are able to work in a more collaborative environment. Downer’s regional manager Matthew Sledmore says the new alliance model builds on the successful relationship between the two groups. “Over the past three years we have built a strong, resilient team who have delivered well considering the challenging weather events we’ve faced.” “I’ve been really proud of the team’s ability to perform in adverse situations.” Tasman District Council’s engineering services manager, Richard Kirby, says that the new alliance builds on the council’s existing relationship with one of its main contractors, and hopes that the new partnership will improve the delivery of road maintenance.

Track Cycling Nelson chairman, Jason Craig, says it’s great to see track cycling coming back. “Unfortunately, we lost some numbers in the four years between tracks, but the numbers are rising again,” says Jason. And it’s great that all ages and levels of ability are making the most of a track that is specifically built to be used by all. The velodrome is a public asset that is open 24/7 apart from when it has been booked in ad-
vance by clubs. The lights, jointly funded by the Tasman and Nelson Councils at a cost of $59,000, are only for club use at this stage as they fund the operating costs of the lights, says a TDC spokesperson. “Having the lights adds to the appeal of the track because it opens up the times it can be used,” says Jason. Tasman Wheelers work together with Track Cycling Nelson to run training and racing sessions on the track and have track bikes available for hire ($10 to hire and
race) for those wanting to test out track riding for the first time. All organizations involved encourage the public to give the facility a try as beginners get support and the encouragement to ride alongside New Zealand champion and professional riders. The facility has much to offer everyone in the community with an inner warm-up track plus a learn-to-ride area for children, which has road signs, intersections, a roundabout, and picnic tables for anyone keen to hang out in the grassed area.

National’s Transport Spokesperson Chris Bishop and Spokesperson for South Island Regional Development, Maureen Pugh announced in Richmond on Monday a range of projects, including investigating safety improvements for Whitby Road in Wakefield. Funding for the project would come from National’s $31 billion transport infrastructure package and the National Land Transport Fund. An underpass is one option that national is considering according to Chris. “National will urgently investigate safety improvements for the Whitby Rd section of State Highway 6 through Wakefield, including looking at an underpass,” Chris says. Chris says that National will investigate what can be done to improve the safety situation of the road. Maureen says the road is currently unsafe and needs looking in to. “It’s clearly a piece of road with a lot of heavy traffic, and then you’ve got
young school children trying to get across,” she says. “It’s an issue in terms of safety, and Chris has agreed that this needs investigation. There are a couple of ideas that we have floated, like an overbridge, or an underpass.” Chris says that National wants to work with the Wakefield community to fast-track the investigation and find a solution. “Maureen has been a huge advocate for safety around roads in this area, it is a road that’s got growing traffic, and there is a real concern for the community.” Chris says that the entire country will benefit from National’s $31 billion transport infrastructure package. “The response to Covid is an important drive for transport spending, especially when it comes to safety improvements and passing lanes, these can employ a lot of people,” Chris says. Maureen says that contracting companies will need projects that give them confidence to take on new staff. “That means we can employ people and there will be more jobs and investment in big machines again as well,” she says.

Locals encouraged to attract bees August a big month for Rescue Helicopter Matt McCrorie
Local Beekeepers are calling on residents to ‘Bee a Hero’ in September, as the country celebrate Bee Aware month, and a local Beekeeper is encouraging Tasman to get involved. Bee Aware Month is an educational campaign run by Apiculture New Zealand to raise awareness of the importance of bees to the environment. Apiculture New Zealand CEO Karin Kos says there are two key goals of the campaign. “We want to lift awareness of the critical importance of bees to New Zealand’s environment, food chain and economy, and teach Kiwis some simple actions that everyone can take to improve bee health.” Local Beekeeper Murray Elwood says that the campaign is a great way to raise awareness, and make sure that local’s are aware of the role bees have in our local food production, and how we can make sure we don’t cause bees harm in our back yards. Murray has been a beekeeper in the Tasman region for

ten is one really simple thing that can make a difference for bees. Weeds like clover and dandelions are great food for bees,” Karin says. Karin also says that its important to support Beekeepers, as honeybees need to be cared for. “Buying local honey, especially some of our beautiful native varieties like rewarewa or kāmahi, or other bee products is a great way to back our beekeepers and their bees,” she says. There are certain plants that will attract bees, like rosemary, oregano, and thyme, which are all excellent sources of nectar for bees. Pip fruit trees like apples, pears, along with New Zealand flax and cabbage trees are all great for attracting bees. Karin also recommends either avoiding garden sprays, selecting bee-friendly products or following the spray safe rules. “Spray only in the early morning and evening when bees are less active, never spray when flowers are in bloom and always read instructions carefully before spraying.”
Jacqui Rawson The Nelson-Marlborough Rescue Helicopter had its busiest August since 1991 as it headed out on 37 missions last month. The total missions were up 28 from the previous year and involved the helicopter flying across the top of the South Island from as far as Anakiwa in Queen Charlotte Sound to Karamea on the West Coast. The busiest day was Thursday the 13th when the helicopter had to head out on 5 separate occasions. Three missions a day was the next busiest day. During August, two mountainbikers and one tramper had to be winched out of the Abel Tasman National Park. Night vision goggles were used in 35% of the missions, in part due to the time of the year. Some of those mission took place on the verge of darkness while others were in complete darkness. It was also a busy month for the helicopter regarding medical centres. The crew answered five callouts to Karamea, four to Golden Bay and two to Buller, retrieving these patients and flying them to Nelson Hospital for medical treatment. Ernest Rutherford - The man who split the atom (Part One) Dianne Scott Ernest Rutherford, 1st Baron Rutherford of Nelson, Order of Merit, Fellow Royal Society and Honorary Fellowship Royal Society Edinburgh, was born in Brightwater on 30 August 1871. He was the fourth child of James and Martha Rutherford, originally from Essex, England. James’s father made his living as a wheelwright in England, and his mother worked as a school teacher before her marriage. Believing that knowledge was power, James and Martha ensured their children were welleducated. Ernest’s parents James and Martha, along with several of his school teachers, were his biggest influences. The headmaster at Fox Hill School noticed that Ernest was very interested in mathematics so took it upon himself to give Ernest further homework and also issued him with a science book. This science book seemed to be the match that lit the fire for Ernest. His first recorded experiment was a cannon constructed from the brass tube of a hat-peg with a marble for a ball and a dose of gunpowder to ignite the device.
It was not the best example of his experimentation, the resulting explosion failing to deliver the marble to the target twenty metres away, but succeeding in destroying the cannon. When Ernest was 11 years old, his father realised that the money coming in from the Fox Hill property was not enough to sustain a family of fourteen, so he moved to Havelock to take up the job of flax milling (which was prosperous at the time). This led to Ernest’s education continuing at Havelock School. It was at Havelock School that Ernest got the Marlborough Scholarship to attend Nelson College. He achieved this on his second attempt, gaining 580 marks out of a possible 600. His attendance at Nelson College from 1887 to 1889 was a happy time for him. The School was still relatively new, being founded in 1856, and remains the oldest state secondary school in New Zealand. In fact, in 1888, Ernest Rutherford came top in all of his subjects: classics, English, mathematics and French, while he was at Nelson College. In his final year he was head boy, dux, and a forward in the rugby First XV.

University of Canterbury. After gaining his B.A., M.A., and B.Sc., he completed two years of research during which he invented a new form of radio receiver. In 1894, while he was still studying at Canterbury, Ernest conducted independent research on the ability of high-frequency electrical discharge to magnetize iron. His research earned him a Bachelor of Science degree in just one year. During that same year, he met and fell in love with his landlady’s daughter, Mary Newton. In 1895 he was awarded a Research Fellowship to travel to England for postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge. That same year he identified a simpler and more commerciallyviable means of detecting radio waves than had been previously established by German physicist Heinrich Hertz. In 1898, he was recommended for a position at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Rutherford was accepted, which meant that in 1900 he could marry Mary Georgina Newton. They married at St Paul’s Anglican Church, Papanui, in Christchurch. Part two to come next week.

Have your say and go in the draw to WIN a $50 Richmond Mall Voucher each month As a teacher of health, the health and well-being of our young people, is at the centre of my decision on whether Cannabis should be legalised. I am focusing on evidence that is provided from local and international research and overseas law change. My viewpoint on cannabis has done a complete 180. The current model of cannabis regulation here in NZ follows the Nixonian era of drug control from the ‘war on drugs’, and after all these years we are left with very high rates among teens and adults. Despite millions of dollars spent to try and reduce rates, prohibition clearly doesn’t work, cannabis is, and always has been, very ‘normal’ here in NZ. Through prohibition, we give control to the black market, gangs and dealers who may not value age and health quite like a regulated system would. Evidence strongly suggests prohibition causes more harm than good, convictions for minor use have huge flow on impacts that effects thousands every year. Regulating and controlling cannabis overseas has shown us that teenage and adult rates drop, health services and funding increases, and better education and preventative measures occur. Our decreasing tobacco rates of recent years shows us what regulation, control, tax
and good education can do. We also get to address the current injustices that occur in our system which disproportionately impact Maori. Statistics show cannabis use is currently very normal among adolescents, which is concerning with its proven negative impacts on youth. However, with the right regulation and control, adolescent use drops. This is partly due to it being harder to get than when prohibited and being ‘less cool’ when legal. Medicinal cannabis laws and access will also be hugely modernised from our current archaic model within this referendum, which in turn will provide better information, availability and a cheaper product that is made in NZ. It’s expected that the NZ medical and recreational cannabis industry and justice system savings could be hundreds of millions, which will aid the economic recovery from Covid in many ways. A ‘yes’ vote does not mean you like cannabis, but rather regulation and control of a recreational and medicinal drug that has always been around, and will always be around. NZ finally has its opportunity, which won’t return for many years, to vote for an alternative method and model which has worked overseas, called control. Brad Norris

Region’s busiest roundabout to be upgraded Considering there are people who do not know how to use the two roundabouts in that area currently, I’m not sure how this will work out. Heading from Stoke I always use the right-hand lane if I’m going straight ahead as I see the left lane for people wanting to then get into the lane turning left into Champion Road. The number of people who use that left lane and then force their way over into the right-hand lane is frustrating. Most can barely fit the gap in front of me, forcing me to stop. They try to race to head ahead of one car. Or you get the numpties who even though they are in the left lane think it’s a two-lane roundabout already and drive straight through instead of turning left. Forcing you to stop or risk driving up onto the actually roundabout. I can’t see this ending well. Yes, it may be cheaper but cheap
doesn’t always mean good. - Julia Twort Great concept, but it’s bound to be a chaotic mess. People struggle to use the current one in the correct manner. Almost every time I travel Stoke - Richmond there is at least one idiot who chooses to use left lane (the one intended for those turning into Champion Road) rather than the right to head along Sailsbury Road & proceeds to either cut me off OR get extremely close to the rear passenger side corner of my vehicle. If people struggle with these 2 lanes, I highly doubt they’ll cope with further changes. - Manda Ft Maddisyn Agree that this roundabout needs to be changed, but having the pedestrian and cycle crossing so close to the roundabout seems insane and will cause traffic to back up within the roundabout. E- bikes come up so fast and, be-
cause they have the right of way, I think this should be reconsidered. A bridge over would be great for bikes/ pedestrians. - Alisa Duncan Personally, I think with schools and new supermarket, traffic lights would have been a better, safer option - Pam Eddy Champion Road is crazy now at certain times of day I dread to think what it will be like with the supermarket traffic added into the mix - Ruth McLaren Piano removed after years in Richmond There’s always a few who ruin it for the community. I don’t understand why it wasn’t put away each night over the lockdown like they had previously been doing. – Julia Twort Julia Benges has shut down - Annmarie Moynihan

Just a thought... Daryl Bay Lead Pastor, Hope Community Church Fatigue is a word that has come to define our shared experience this year as life has been turned upside down. Change and uncertainty have led to a deep-seated tiredness. However, if you want a boost that is refreshing then next time you are on YouTube, look up “The Blessing, Aotearoa.” It will touch your life deeply at a spiritual, cultural and personal level – you won’t regret it. As Waimea Weekly reported last week, this music video went viral recently after a local musician Grant Norsworthy pulled singers from up and down New Zealand together to sing an ancient blessing for this Covid-19 period. Why has this particular video touched so many people around the world? In it, you will hear the beauty of Te Reo and English; you will see a tapestry of Maori, Pakeha and Pasifika; you will experience a connection with our nation’s land and story; most of all you will feel the heartbeat of God to bless and renew your life. The words are like the wardrobe that lead to Narnia, with echoes of
another world: “The Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you, the Lord turn His face towards you and give you peace” (Number 6:24-25). If you have ever wondered about God’s heart being towards you, or what the coming of Jesus was all about, reflect deeply on the words sung in the video. “Turning his face towards you” is a way of talking about an actual experience of God’s presence and the life-changing experience of a loving relationship with Him. Wherever you find yourself right now - amidst Covid chaos, political change, economic challenge and personal angst - the words of The Blessing are for you. When you receive it, through faith in Jesus, you become part of a multi-cultural, intergenerational, worldwide family of faith that is based on the love of God who gives deep peace. Something in each of us aches for that sense of identity, belonging and story. Jesus says: Come, all who need grace, you are welcome (Matthew 11:28-29). You are welcome to connect with any of our district’s local churches, made up of ordinary people who have found their peace in the love of God.

#FinzUp Following its inaugural Premiership title in 2019, the Tasman Mako are looking to go back-toback this season. With the Mitre 10 Cup set to kick off on Friday night, the Mako will start as firm favourites to defend its title. The newly-established provincial powerhouses have made some shrewd signings while maintaining the core of its championship side. A powerful 32-man squad was named last week with a familiar look to it, despite missing some key performers from 2019. It will again be captained by David Havili, with Andrew Goodman and Clarke Dermody returning as co-head coaches, assisted by Shane Christie and Gray Cornelius. A feature of the class of 2020 is the return of three former long-

Welsh club Scarlets, while hooker Quentin MacDonald (78 caps) is back from Oyonnax in France. They will be joined by former Wanderers club player and Samoan halfback Dwayne Polataivao. The team fields 20 Super Rugby players, plus seven new recruits to the Mako ranks.
High profile wing signings Sevu Reece (Crusaders) and Mark Telea (Blues) are joined by prop Isi Tu'ungafasi (Crusaders), brother of All Black Ofa, former schoolboy loose forward star Anton Segner, young Canterbury lock Mahonri Ngakuru and former Hawke’s Bay flanker Hugh Renton.
Twenty five members of the squad have played club rugby in the region, with 10 of those graduating from the region’s schools' system. Unfortunate to miss the squad are six contracted players who have suffered season-ending injuries - Ethan Blackadder (Crusaders), Atu Moli (Chiefs), Pari Pari Parkinson (Highlanders), Ray Nuia (Blues), James Marshall (Hurricanes) and Jack Grooby (Stoke). Players missing from the 2019 title-winning combination are hooker Hugh Roach, former All Black props Wyatt Crockett and Tim Perry, Blair Prinsep, loosies Liam Squire and Jordan Taufua, plus midfielder Levi Aumua. Four club players will train with the squad as potential injury replacements - flanker Braden Stewart (Central), lock Max Hicks (Marist) prop Kershawl Sykes-Martin (Nelson) and half back Louie Chapman (Kahurangi). two in Blenheim. A pre-season clash against Canterbury last week gave a chance for fringe Mako to stake their claim for selection. With plenty of new faces in the mix, the Mako displayed its enviable depth as the side put up a stern challenge against the Ranfurly Shield holders. A late try would give the Mako a shot at a draw, but the conversion attempt proved unsuccessful. Despite the 19-17 result, Tasman will take plenty of positives out of the Hanmer Springs loss. Mako co-head coach Goodman says the game was a really “good hit-out for the boys”. “Just to play at that next level of intensity before we head up to Counties [for the Mitre 10 Cup opener on Saturday, September 12] was really important.” Goodman says some of the defensive work, especially from set piece, was outstanding. “Overall, they played well in patches, but also showed they have plenty to work on, which was always going to be the case." Andrew Goodman says some of the players who took the chance to show their abilities were Alex Nankivell, Fetuli Pae, and No.8 Hugh Renton, in his first game for Tasman. Next up for the Mako is Counties Manukau in Pukekohe at 7.05pm on Saturday.

Wanderers claim division two title Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
After a disastrous start to the season, Wanderers have ended its 2020 campaign by winning the second division title on Saturday afternoon in a dramatic final against Marist. Suffering two consecutive defeats to start the year, Wanderers went on to win eight games on the trot culminating in a 17-13 win in front of a boisterous Brightwater crowd. Skipper Gareth Palmer says it was a fairy-tale finish to a year filled with adversity. “To start the season the way we did and end it like that is bloody good and a great group of lads to do it with.” Gareth says it was an intense affair worthy of a final. “Marist probably deserved it with the amount of ball they had in that second half, but for us to hard up on the frontline for our club was good stuff.” Both sides missed penalty shots inside the opening ten with plen-

It didn’t take long before some drama unfolded with Wanderers number eight Steve Soper sent to the sin bin for a late hit on Sione Inisi. Marist quickly took advantage and opened the scoring through a clinical set piece move with first five Seta Sauri waltzing through
the defence. Wanderers replied quickly as Scott Reed went in on the back of a powerful rolling maul. Marist struck straight back courtesy of a storming surge from number eight Teanikumi Piukala. Tit-for-tat continued, Soper making up for his early indiscretion with a try and Palmer’s deadly radar from the sideline giving his
team a 14-10 lead. Ironically, it was Soper on the receiving end of an illegal shot that sent Piukula to the bin for ten to close out a furious first forty minutes. Paul O’Regan closed the gap to one to kick off the second half before Palmer responded in kind as the scoring opportunities dried up and defences tightened.
Both sides guilty of simple errors as the pressure mounted. Marist enjoyed a wealth of possession and territory as the clock ticked on, but unable to capitalise as Wanderers were ferocious in defence. The visitors squandered multiple chances to clinch at the death but Wanderers held firm and closed out the enthralling win.

Waimea sluggish against TBHS Jacob Page Reporter
editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Waimea Combined rugby coach has urged his players for one final effort after a lacklustre 31-11 loss to Timaru Boys’ High School, Saturday. Waimea has their final
round-robin match against St Thomas’ at Waimea College this weekend and James is eager for his team to finish on a high note. “We’ve had some good moments this year and we deserve to finish off the season well. James admitted the loss to TBHS was probably the
worst effort his team had produced during the Coronavirus-affected season. “The players individually did do their preparations to the standard we wanted. “As coaches we only see them twice a week but the boys have to take ownership to make sure they are prepared.
James says he is unsure whether the rapid format of the competition had contributed to the team running out of gas late in the campaign. “We just weren’t quite there with executing our gameplan. “Maybe we miss the usual break in the middle to fresh-

There was a buzz of activity at the Motueka Beach Reserve on Saturday 5th September, as 24 teams registered for the Motueka to Mapua relay. With so many events being cancelled due to Covid 19 restrictions, runners and walkers from the Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough region were excited to be able to take part in this relay. While being comprised of four legs of varying length and dif-

ficulty, athletes could complete the 26km course individually or in teams of up to 4 people. This added interest and variety to the relay and made it appeal to a wide range of ages and abilities. Everyone had a ‘great day out’ and while all participants were to be congratulated on their effort and achievement, one standout performance deserves special mention. The Athletics Nelson Junior Men’s 3 person team of Matt Bow-
en, Danyon Oakes and Josh Fitzgerald were the first team home, setting a course record of 1.39.25hrs and Matt, who ran the first two legs for his team, recorded the fastest time on both of the legs. The next event on the Winter Running Programme is the very popular Brightwater Sprig and Fern 10km race this Saturday, 12th September. As with all our events, walkers and runners, regardless of age or ability, are welcome.

Local baseball duo receive national honour Jacob Page Nelson baseballers Cooper Grant and James Mathews have both received national age-group awards for this year. Cooper, a talent pitcher and hitter, won the national under-16 player of the year award while James, a talented infielder and contact hitter won the under-13 national honour. Cooper, is the son of former Black Sox softball pitcher Marty Grant, who is now the face of baseball in the Nelson and Tasman region. Cooper and James both represented New Zealand at age-group level internationally over the past 12 months. Cooper also spent time as a development player with the Auckland Tuatara professional team in the Australian Baseball League. ”Making the Tuatara was a big step for me and just getting to spend time with those players, profes-
sionals and guys who have played in the minor leagues in America was a learning experience,” Cooper says. The 16-year-old is unsure if his future lies in pitching or hitting but he hopes to play club baseball in Auckland this season as well as continue to represent in the Nelson Heat. James, who lives in Upper Moutere, says he enjoys playing the middle infield with either shortstop or second base. “You get a lot of balls there and I feel like I’m always in the game. “As a batter I like to hit for contact and get on-base. James has been playing for four years. “Making the NZ under-12 team was a big thing.” He said that he really wished to thank coaches Andrew Marck (Pinky) & Hendrix Warren as influential coaches, alongside Marty Grant.

Tough weekend for Richmond AFC teams Jubilee Park was busy on Saturday afternoon with Richmond hosting five senior games at the club. Unfortunately, not all the results went the home teams way, but there was some great football on display and some close score lines. At 1 pm the Sprig and Fern Upper Queen Street Masters played Motueka and the Fresh Choice Richmond 2 nd division boys took on FC Nelson Locomotive. The masters missed several good chances to keep in the game against Motueka, eventually losing 3-1, and after being convincingly beaten by Loco 6-1 earlier in the season the young Richmond lads played a well constructed game this time, eventually finishing 3-4 against their much more experienced opponents.
The 3 pm games saw Thompson Daly Chartered Accountants Thistle and the Fresh Choice Richmond 1st team both go down 3-2 against their respective FC Nelson opponents, while the Global Wings Travel Hornbills had a great 2-0 win over Golden Bay. Elsewhere the Tasman Auto Bogans lost 2-0 to Mapua, but the Hothouse Creative Foxes continued their dominant season coming back over the hill with a 2-0 win against Blenheim. In the youth grades the club recorded one win and two losses. The club hosts three senior games at Jubilee Park this Saturday, two at 1pm and one at 3 pm. The Fresh Choice Richmond 1 st team take on Nelson Suburbs at Saxton Field from 3 pm.
