Flag fines unresolved Emily Beaumont Richmond Unlimited’s Marina Buonocore says they’ll continue to bat for retailers who’ve been issued fines for flying flags outside their business premises and hopes the council will rescind the fines. A rule has been in place for a number of years stipulating that any flags flown must not hamper pedestrian access, and while there have been no reports of any incidents relating to the flags, just recently, after years of neglecting the bylaw, Tasman District Council opted to enforce the rule. The move outraged local business owners already suffering a downturn in customers due to the Queen St upgrade. “We need people to see we’re here and open,” says Lea Lock, owner of Captivation. TDC community relations manager Chris Choat says businesses were only fined after “many discussions”, the fines still stand, and
if not paid within 28 days offenders run the risk of incurring late penalties. “These businesses, unlike the majority of other Queen St businesses, chose to ignore our pleas to manage their advertising within current bylaws, maintaining access for all users which is paramount at this time,” says Chris. Waimea Weekly reader David Spence implied TDC regulated the flags on behalf of disabled members of the local community including the visually impaired. Taking to the streets, the Waimea Weekly asked every pedestrian wearing glasses, on a mobility scooter or using a walking aid, if they found the flags hampered their access. Not one of the more than 30 people approached had any issue. “We’re going to keep on at the council to try and persuade them to rescind the fines. They’ve said they’re happy to discuss it further, so we’ll try and reach a resolution with them,” says Marina.

Chemical spill well-contained Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade attended a chemical spill at Three Brothers corner in Richmond on the afternoon of Monday, March 26. Chief fire officer Craig Piner says the chemical was glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, and appeared to have come off the back of a vehicle using the roundabout. Appreciative of Fulton Hogan’s efforts prior to the brigade’s arrival, Craig says they achieved their goal of preventing the chemical from entering waterways or finding its way into the stormwater drains. Two fire trucks were sent to the spill along with the hazardous response unit from Nelson, and the chemical was contained within an hour - a successful outcome, says Craig.

Riding Rainbow year-round a possibility
As the snow disappears on Rainbow Ski Area at the end of each winter so to does the mountain’s ability to provide a playground for adventure seekers. But that could all change in the future with management keen to explore the option of capitalising on popular summer activities. General manager James Lazor says, while the focus right now is on the impending ski season less than a hundred days away, once they’re through the winter, looking at further options for the mountain area is definitely on

the cards. “It’s up to the committee to look at it and see what we can and can’t do on the land,” says James. Other ski areas within New Zealand and overseas have made the successful summer transformation into mountainbiking parks and Rainbow Ski Area is well-placed to jump on this bandwagon with the region’s excellent reputation as a mountainbiker’s mecca confirmed by a new report. Nelson City Council’s report has estimated
that in ten years mountainbiking would bring nearly $45 million in direct expenditure to the Nelson-Tasman region. The report says, in any given year, around 16,000 people in the region are involved in mountainbiking and a further 29,000 people visit the region each year to participate in the sport. Figures that could quite possibly lead to mountainbikers tearing down the slopes if Rainbow Ski Area management and the committee take advantage of the region’s love for mountainbiking.

Anna Shone shows off some of her Home-lee range in her boutique, opening on Gladstone Rd this Friday, April 6. Photo: Emily Beaumont
Around the web and Home-lee for local designer in Richmond For years Anna Shone dreamed of opening her own women’s fashion boutique and now, on Richmond’s Gladstone Rd, it’s going to become a reality. Anna’s “really excited” to be opening her Home-lee brand’s first store on Friday, April 6. As a little girl Anna would pull out her mum’s sewing machine, indulging her creative side, and from 2005 she made clothing under her label Chariselee to sell at Nelson’s market. Morphing Chariselee into Home-lee in 2014, Anna says her label’s intention is to pro-
vide comfortable, casual and quality clothing. When her apartment pants “went crazy” with online sales Anna knew she had a good formula. The pants set Anna apart from her peers and their popularity surprised the Richmond mother-of-three, who currently has over 70 stockists nationwide. “I just could not keep up with sales and had to expand quickly,” she says. Continuing to ride the wave of expansion, Anna and her family are looking forward to no longer tripping over boxes in their living room, and judging by Facebook comments they aren’t the only ones excited for the new premises in the old Richmond Glass building at 14 Gladstone Rd. “It’s such an exciting step for us,” says Anna, as she looks forward to opening from 9am2.30pm on weekdays and Saturdays from 9am-1pm.

Port Nelson came to the rescue for Richmond Kindergarten the other week, when they donated their time and resources to install the kindy’s new drinking fountain for the kids. It took two men half a day to get the fountain up and running, and the children couldn’t be happier! After getting quotes between $1000 - $2000, chairperson Kelly Diskin, along with her husband Jeremy who works at the port, approached Port Nelson to see if they could help out with resources and a donation, and they said ‘yes’. The Parent Committee fund-raised by holding a disco raising more than $1000 and a wheela-thon, which raised enough funds to cover the remainder. The sponsorship committee at Port Nelson say, “Port Nelson is at the heart of the Nelson community, both in location and spirit, and is vital to the ongoing economic and social well-being of the Nelson region. We strive to play our role as a good corporate citizen by contributing to the vibrancy of life in Nelson through a range of sponsorships and provision of support where it is most needed. It’s fantastic to see the fruition of projects that have been supported over time and the ongoing benefits to the community.” The kindy originally had a tap that the children would use, but after it stopped working a year ago fund-raising began to have a new fountain installed that the children could operate on their own. Head teacher Rochelle Steer says it’s a lot easier and more child-friendly for the kids. “Beforehand they had to keep coming inside to get their drinks, now this is something that they can do on their own whenever they want. It’s just great, it is another thing that they can get used to doing before the transition into school. This is not the first time Port Nelson has supported our tamariki’s learning, as last year we had a tour around the Port. We really appreciate this support from such a large local entity.” Kindergartener Evie O’Neill thinks it’s pretty neat, and she likes the new fountain. It was actually installed for her height, with Evie being one of the smaller children enrolled with the kindergarten.

Higgins Heritage Park celebrate 120 years of motoring Amy Russ Higgins Heritage Park will be hosting an open day on April 15 to celebrate 120 years of motoring. Ten veteran cars from around New Zealand, as well as new hybrid, e-cars and electric pushbikes from 2018, will be on show. “This is a motoring demonstration with a difference, not just a regular car show,” says Higgins Heritage Park chairperson
John Hurley, “this event is specifically aimed at the earliest vehicles. There is a vehicle like no one has seen before, or will even call a ‘vehicle’.” John is referring to the 1899 Locomobile Stanhope making its way from Christchurch with owner and restorer Bruce Shadbolt. “We would like to acknowledge the support of the owners of these vehicles. It has taken quite a number of people to
make this happen.” The entire park will be open to the public, children’s rides and the steam museum traction engine will be going. A grand parade of London Bobbies waving red flags and signifying the 1865 Red Flag Act will be performed at 10:45 and 1:45.

Author donates for Autism Awareness month Amy Russ Jerri Pirc has written two children books and has a third one in the pipeline. Two dollars from each book sold between 1-15 April 2018 benefits individuals with autism, with proceeds going to Autism NZ. Jerri, a retired speech and language therapist, says “I’ve been in the field for a long time, and autism is such an area of interest to me. Here is something we know so much more about now, and it’s exciting!” “One of the main features people on the spectrum have is difficulties in communication, and that’s where the speech and language therapy
came in for me,” says Jerri, “and a lot of the strategies that work for autism work the same for all children.” Jerri volunteers at Restore Habitat for Humanity and also volunteers as a reading gran at Waverley St kindy and Richmond Primary. She would often bring Jaz, her 14-year-old german wirehaired pointer, with her. The kids responded so well to Jaz that she quickly became a regular visitor. Jerri’s beloved pooch passed away recently, but will live on in Jerri’s new book ‘Jaz at Waverley Street’. Oakwoods manager Stephen Davis has been working to get the speed down in the retirement village by installing speed bumps, give way signs and lowering the speed limit . “We had a lot of concern from residents to get the speed limit down in here,” says Stephen, “so we had the new speed bumps installed. “Hopefully we have put enough stuff in place to keep people protected. It is great to see the impact of the bumps already, they are defi-
nitely slowing traffic down,” says Stephen. Unfortunately, one resident has recently tripped and injured themselves. “It is unfortunate that someone has been hurt,” says Stephen, “health and safety is very important to us and we are here to look after people.” Footpaths and plenty of signage are in place for the clearly painted speed bumps. Both residents and visitors still need to be aware of their surroundings, and slow down when driving through the village.

End of an era for info centre
Sally Symonds and Gladys Creswell permanently close the Richmond Information Centre. Photo: Emily Beaumont
For 30 years the Richmond and District Information Centre has been proudly manned by a dedicated group of volunteers, but with their numbers dwindling and more and more people looking online for their information, the centre permanently closed on Thursday, March 29. Volunteer co-ordinator Sally Symonds says their closure “will definitely leave a hole”. “I’m sad to see it closed. I think we have provided a great service,” says Sally. Originally occupying a skyline garage just next door to today’s site on Gladstone Rd, the current space was built by
Richmond Rotary in 1988. Displaying local information alongside the ability of providing a wealth of local knowledge that’s often built up over a lifetime, Sally says volunteers have enjoyed meeting people from all over the world. But with fewer visitors utilising the free service and the ongoing struggle for volunteers, the decision to close came as no surprise. Tasman District Council communications manager Chris Choat says, “its use was superseded by people looking to other means of gathering information. It became a victim of technology.”

Fair fun for all Emily Beaumont
As the sun shone down, the steady stream of fair goers continued to enter the Mapua domain for the 36th annual Easter fair. The more than 220 stalls didn’t disappoint and with everything from dumplings to earrings being hawked there was something for everyone. A key fund-raiser for the Mapua Playcentre and Mapua School, the event is efficiently run by a merry team of volunteers. The truck stage provided entertainment throughout the day ranging from Tai Chi demonstrations to classic rock performances and children’s kapa haka. Mapua Playcentre’s icecream stall near the stage proved popular with the group literally “selling hundreds”. “It’s been such a great day. There’s been a really positive vibe, great music and plenty of happy families,” says Talia Ryan from Mapua playcentre. Even the queues for some of Sturgeon’s rides weren’t dampening the enthusiasm of the kids, many of whom also took advantage of the Lego room, petting zoo and pony rides.

Did you know that up to 45% of heat in homes insulated to pre-2007 requirements is lost through the windows? Even if your home is double glazed, up to 31% of heat can still be lost. This heat loss can be minimised by installing quality window treatments in your home.
How do window treatments help your rooms selected keep the heat in?
Luxaflex blinds
As the temperature drops outside this cools the windows panes in your homes, the pocket of air that is close to the window panes then becomes cooler. A characteristic of cool air is that it’s heavier than warm air, so as this cooled air sinks, it is replenished by the warmer air from other areas of your room. The effect of this is a circulating air current that cools down the entire room. Window treatments are designed to hold (trap) the air between the window and the curtain or blind, to prevent this circulating air current from developing and cooling down your room.

If you’ve experienced back pain you need to read this Hello my name is Steve Page and I’m the publisher of the Waimea Weekly. I have never endorsed any product publicly before, but I’m going to with this device. I have suffered terrible back pain over my lifetime, resulting in several hospital visits. The pain was often so bad I would take a drive in my car to be alone. Early one morning I got taken by ambulance into Nelson hospital, I was in so much pain. But they could do little except let me rest and administer pain medication. I didn’t know what steps to take next. Then I was introduced to the Inversion table. Obviously sceptical, I was also a bit desperate. I started using it and within 2 days noticed a huge difference. The pain was still there but no way was it as intense and, in fact, it was bearable. This thing was working! And soon I was talking to my Dad who also started using it and he enjoyed it. He Steve Page said you finished the session feeling quite euphoric. I started doing some homework and found out a number of high profile athletes use it for spine maintenance and a friend of mine who is an Olympic rower has been using a similar device for 30 years. He has no spinal problems at all and he is now late sixties. If I had my time again I would do the same as this friend. Use it regularly and use it if your back aches or hurts. Don’t wait for the damage or pain to get out of control. It’s easy to use, is simple to adjust for all people, all sizes and all heights. I want you to know that while the ads are paid for I have personally received no reward or payment of any sort to endorse this product like this. But it helped me heaps and some of my friends who have since used it, no question. Bottom line - it works! If you get a chance to try or buy and you want to maintain your back or help remove pain, then go for it.
I am happy to answer any questions about my experience with this table on sales@waimeaweekly.co.nz
NUMBER ONE SELLING UNIT The EP-950 Custom Inversion Table is easy to assemble and easy to use. It uses the basic principals of Inversion Therapy to combat back pain, relieve pressure on the discs and ligaments and decompress the spine, which helps to restore nutrients to the discs. Frequent use of the table will also help to improve posture and relax sore, tired muscles. Only three to five minutes per day are needed to decompress all weight bearing joints and increase flexibility. A tether strap allows you to preset your rotation angle and our EP-950 Custom Inversion Tables come with an easy reach locking mechanism paired with ergo-embrace designed with pressure reducing foam specially formed for greater comfort.

Real Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers
After almost ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”.
was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.
Come along to one of our expos and see how it works for yourself! (See red bar for details). If you have completely resigned yourself to having back or neck pain for the rest of your life, then chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.
Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more.
TESTIMONIAL
Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips ten years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”.
“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older.
In 2008 I had been living with a serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The Specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business. At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious relief which lasted for an hour or two, I was told that the relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter. Four years on I still use my table on a daily basis, my back is as strong as ever with very little or completely no pain, I am still at my same profession and working as hard as ever and most importantly I did not have the surgery. I consider the purchase of my Teeter has been one of my greatest investments, not only has it enabled me to avoid serious and costly surgery, it has kept me in my profession and it has brought my health back. Thank you very much for the opportunity.

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS
Discs: It
uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.
Posture: Poor
posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.
De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots far more effectively and returns This is pure logic, if a machine is out of quality of life alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when machine is that the body is constantly muscles are stressed they become tight repairing itself, however if the wear and which restricts the flow of blood and lymph tear on the body is greater than the body’s through the muscles so toxins build up, ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle decline and allows the body to repair itself, rocking motion that stimulates circulation resulting in a far healthier life. and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into If you are serious about investing in your your lymph system where it stimulates health and really sorting your issues out, lymph flow and deals with it. Most people come see us at one of our local roadshows, with serious neck issues see a large you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain. improvement after only one treatment.

NECK PAIN?
Come along for a free treatment
Here in New Zealand,
Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores.
Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse.
Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability • Reduce The Effects Of Ageing Caused By Gravity
Dr Kanji has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”.

To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here
Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the talking”

Popular GP farewelled Emily Beaumont If you were none the wiser you could be forgiven for thinking there’d been an outbreak in Wakefield as a steady stream of the Health Centre’s patients entered the building last Thursday, March 29. But they were walking in with good health, probably in part due to the good work of the doctor they were there to farewell, the muchadored Dr Peter McKenzie. Hanging up his stethoscope after 30 years at the highly-regarded practice, Peter is continuing in the medical field with 2-3 days per week scheduled at his Musculoskeletal Specialist Practice at The Collingwood Centre. Wakefield will remain home for Peter and wife Jane, where they raised their four children. “We have very much enjoyed our life here in Wakefield, both as a family being involved in the community and myself working at the health centre. Wakefield has been very kind to us, and I cannot think of a better place to raise a family,” says Peter. Staff at the centre say they’ll “miss his stories at morning tea time” and his “warm personality”. A sentiment shared by many of the patients who attended the farewell afternoon tea. “We’re going to miss Doctor Pete a lot, he’s a really good doctor,” says Jayme Lowe, a patient since birth.
Murchison Fire crew take well deserved break Amy Russ Last weekend State Highway 6 was being patrolled by volunteers from surrounding districts, so the Murchison Fire crew could switch off and spend some quality time with their families and loved ones on the West Coast. Two crews of four, made up of volunteers from Nelson, Wakefield and Westport fire brigades, stayed at the station and covered all motor vehicle accidents in the Murchison district. They attended one callout during their stay, a car versus truck collision on late Saturday night, and one fire crew assisted police at the scene. No one was injured. There were two other separate incidents where cars had rolled, however the fire crew did not receive a call to attend either situations.

There was damage to the Great Taste Trail in February and the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust has been working very hard since then to repair damaged sections. While devastating, around 95% of the Great Taste Trail is in good shape, so there is still lots to ride. However, it is a priority for the Trust to fix the damaged sections. The Trust and Council have agreed short, medium and long-term solutions for each of the damaged sections. In some places, they are looking at realignment options and this may lead to trail enhancements. In other sections they will improve trail resilience by using different construction methods, materials and technology. Considering the extent of infrastructure damage from the recent storms across the region, the Trust appreciates the hard work done by Trail Manager Josh Aldridge and the support from the Council to get the trail repaired. The trail from Richmond to Wakefield and Spooners Tunnel was unaffected by the recent storms. In fact, most of the Great Taste Trail is fully open; an excellent day trip is to cycle from Richmond to Spooners and then Norris Gully (36km), even better if you have someone to retrieve the cyclists at the end and head for a cold beer. For anyone not confident on the road section between Wakefield and Wai-iti, an option is to park at Wai-iti Domain and have a relaxed 15km cycle on off-road trail to Spooners Tunnel and Norris Gully. The Trust, with support from TDC, has applied to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment for funding for this work from the Maintaining the Quality of Great Rides (MGR) Fund. The recent storm will be classed as an ‘extreme’ event, which means repairs and improvements to its resilience to future storms is eligible for full funding from the MGR fund. The storm damage was limited to four areas. These are Richmond to Lansdowne Rd (along Lower Queen Street), Rabbit Island, Mapua foreshore, and Motueka to Kaiteriteri. Detours currently in place mean that cyclists can still complete the trail. Please refer to the website www.heartofbiking.org.nz for up-to-date detour information. Please note that repairs are ongoing and riders should follow instructions from signs and workers on site and walk rough sections if you don't feel comfortable riding.

Choppers to spray for Bomarea Kingsland Forest and Reservoir Creek walkways and forest areas will be closed on Wednesday, 4 April, to allow aerial spraying to take place. Signage is in place at track entrance points - please do not enter the area. Bomarea (Bomarea multiflora) invades remnant forests and shrublands, easily identifiable by its brightly coloured trumpet-shaped flowers, orange on the outside and yellow with red spots on the inside. Its vines grow into the tree canopy to form large masses, smothering the supporting trees and preventing the establishment of native species. With its seeds spread by birds, Bomarea can quickly cover large areas of forest and is similar to the Old Man’s Beard and Banana Passionfruit vines. Once it is established it is much more difficult and labour intensive to control. Kingsland forest is the only known area in the region where bomarea has become naturalised, it will be closed to the public on Wednesday, 4 April, for herbicide spraying, weather permitting. If you see any new growth of Bomarea after the spraying operation has been completed, please report your sighting to the biosecurity team on 543 8400.

Champions to the fore over Easter Jody Scott Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway welcomed 3 New Zealand champions at their Easter Extravaganza meeting, plenty of former champions turned up as well, as they showcased their talents amongst the local contingent of drivers. Eighteen side-cars from around the country fronted including NZ champions of Russell Stewart and Andrew Parker from Palmy, the biggest field seen here in years, hopefully it will become an annual fixture for Easter. It was the first time local pairing of Adie Drake and Kieran Sather-
ley haven’t picked up the main prize but 3rd was a good result against a star-studded field. The Super Stocks were aided with three North island cars including NZ Champion William Humphries and 3NZ Jordan Dare. The two shared the spoils each night, with Alex Hill finding the podium on both nights as the best club car on the weekend. The Youth Ministocks ended their season on Friday night, Cameron Thompson picking up the final heat win in his last race as a youth driver. The productions champs went to Eddie Frans who was on the receiving end of several spins, but
the car held together to win on the night. The Super Saloons were light on numbers but three former NZ champions were in the field. Ian Burson gave the field a driving lesson on the first night but ran into car trouble on the second night, with Peter Dixon taking out the second night, Shane Carey returned to his home track picking up a heat win and 2nd spot on night two. The Street stocks were a late inclusion but entertained the field, Matt Watson the pick of the bunch as a few cars’ lives were ended for the season. The T.Q. grade has been the fea-
ture grade of the year with the NZ title here earlier in the season. Again it was the Canterbury duo of NZ Champion Jeremy Webb and Kyle Glover to the fore. Club Champion Alicia MacLauchlan was the best of locals picking up 3rd on both features, but Webb was a class act once again. The stock cars wound up their season with a few good hits, Levi Collier running amuck all weekend, Keightley Teece taking out night one and Michael Paynter winning night two. Shane Brooks had his best weekend of the season placing 2nd on both nights. Conor Rangi was completing in
Nelson Matters I have been surprised by how quickly the Ardern/Peters Government has descended into a shambles over the past month. Government Ministers and MPs are abusing their powers and becoming embroiled in scandal; while the new Prime Minister is being made to look ineffectual. The month began with revelations of sexual offending at Labour’s Youth Camp, where Labour’s President, Ministers and MPs chose to cover up rather than tell parents and police. The hypocrisy was that the PM and Labour had been very vocal over the “Me Too” campaign
in demanding others front up and take the issue of sexual abuse and harassment seriously. Former PM Helen Clark was damning of Labour’s management. Last week saw the resignation of respected journalist Carol Hirschfeld, Head of Content of RNZ in a scandal with the new Labour Broadcasting Minister, Claire Curran. It is crucial in a fair and free democracy that Ministers do not interfere in RNZ’s content. The implication was that Ms Curran was offering millions of dollars of public money for sympathetic coverage of her Government. The
problem was compounded by Ms Hirschfeld and Ms Curran lying about the meeting. Power seems to have gone to the head of NZ First. It was corrupt of its MP Jenny Marcroft to tell the National MP for Rodney; Mark Mitchell, that he needed to end his involvement with a local trust advocating for the clean-up of the Matarangi River or it would not get Government funding. It was also wrong for Shane Jones to demand the resignation of the Chair and Chief Executive of Air NZ, a publicly listed company. He also made the PM look weak when he ignored her pleas to tone it down.
the final round of the War of the Wings Sprint car series, he had a fantastic debut season finishing 4th in Cromwell to end up 2nd overall. The weekend sponsors the New Gate Company, much like their ads suggest, must have had a word upstairs to keep the lurking rain clouds away on night two. Overall it was a great final fling for the club. Now the focus is on building towards the 50th anniversary celebrations over Labour weekend to kick off the new season in October.

Murk also surrounds the sudden departure of the Chief Scientist at the independent Environmental Protection Authority. The Greens had repeatedly attacked the Chief Scientist in Opposition and Greens Minister Eugenie Sage raised the issue at her first meeting with the EPA, sent critical articles about the scientist to the Authority and within weeks the EPA got rid of the scientist. This interference is wrong and risks having politics rather than science drive the environmental decision making. The Russian problem has also scarred the Ardern/Peters Gov-
ernment. Peters’ statements about the Salisbury chemical weapon attack in the UK were slow and weak. Twenty seven countries have expelled Russian spies, including Australia, Canada, the US and the UK whereas our PM is turning a blind eye. She naively believes there are none in New Zealand. New Zealand has benefitted from more than a decade of stable Government. The wheels look to be falling off this Labour/NZ First/Greens governing only a few months into the job. The PM needs to take charge and show leadership. Advt.

Tapawera retain tournament honours This year’s annual Area Schools tournament was held at Karamea Area School, with seven schools taking part. Tapawera Area School once again won the tournament following on from last year’s win when they also played host. Collingwood school will host the event in 2019. Area schools tournament is one of the biggest events for Area Schools each year. The seven area schools that take part in the 5 day tournament are: Karamea, Collingwood, Tapawera, Rai Valley, Reefton, Murchison and South Westland. All these schools come together each year and compete in a variety of different sporting codes, basketball, softball, touch, football, netball, Ki O Rahi and volleyball. There are also minor competitions throughout the week like bowls, arts/photo challenges, top chef, golf and an archery challenge during the five days of tournament. Tapawera took a team of twenty students, ten boys and ten girls, to Karamea. This was a younger team than they would usually send and had students from as young as year eight in the team. Tapawera had a lot of students who had been a part of its team over previous years. This gave a good opportunity to bring through a new group of students who might not normally get the
chance to be involved so young. Tapawera went into this challenge not knowing what to expect as far as results go, but were told by their coach, Mr Haunch, to just go out there and do their best and give it all they have and walk away proud whether they won or lost games. Tapawera continued to put all they had into the tournament and by the end of the week became the victors. A big part of Tapawera’s success was all the hard work and time that Mr Haunch puts into these students, The sportspeople of Tapawera Area School who came back victorious from the annual Area around the skills he teaches them Schools tournament. The better the training we provide, the better the tradesmen we will get out of it.” Three cheers to Trinder Engineers who celebrate 60 years in business on April 6th! the company’s success to it “staying true to engineering principles. We don’t try to be too fancy – part of it is choosing business models which have allowed us to expand out into the regions. While some of our work is for local clients, an increasing amount of what we do is national and international.” The team at Trinders also looks for opportunities to offer alternatives. “There are people who may be looking to import or manufacture a product which doesn’t quite fit in with what’s really required in New Zealand—so we try to create a better quality product that isn’t necessarily cheaper, but has improved performance or features.” Another progressive aspect of Trinder Engineers is its staff retention. “We have a surprisingly low staff turnover, with our longest serving employee achieving 50 years with the business!” says Kerry. Sixteen-year-old Sam Gale only competed in downhill mountainbiking for the first time four years ago and now he’s set to show his skills on the world stage. Selection in the New Zealand team to compete at the Mountain Biking World Cup this May has Sam “stoked”. “I really didn’t expect it. I was hoping I was going to be selected cause I knew it’d be so cool,” says Sam. Having ridden bikes since his

youth, Sam raced moto-x before making the switch to pedal power. “I like the adrenalin of racing, especially in mountainbiking. I enjoy the competition side of it and how it all comes down to one run,” says Sam. Now he’ll get to test his mettle against the best Under-19 riders worldwide when they come together for the championship series held in Austria, France and Scotland. It’ll be a big trip for the Waimea
College student whose travels until now have only taken him as far as Australia. Returning this week from Crankworx, the mountainbiking competition in Rotorua, with a 2nd in the national school’s race and a 4th in the open downhill, Sam is feeling ready to perform some twowheeled magic on the world stage. “I reckon I’m ready for it, I’ve been training pretty hard,” says Sam.

This year’s annual Top of the South Island Area Schools Tournament was held in Karamea last week. This is an event where seven Area Schools, including Tapawera and Murchison, select their best 20 sportsmen and women and compete over a week at 25 different sports and activities. This year’s winners, in a very tight contest, were Tapawera Area School, with Murchison only 11 points behind. This was Murchison’s best result in nearly 30 years and follows on from their 3rd place last year. Photo: Supplied

Delivering a rare event Emily Beaumont To bowl a hat-trick in cricket is rare, to bowl a double hat-trick even rarer, but that’s exactly what Waimea Toi Toi’s second-grade team member Mitchell Newport did in his team’s season final against Stoke Nayland on Saturday, March 17. To claim four wickets in four consecutive balls is referred to as a double hattrick, a rare event treasured by bowlers. “I’ve never done it before. It was pretty cool and even more so to do it in the final,” says Mitchell. It was Mitchell’s second rotation at bowling when he scored the double hat-trick that ended Stoke Nayland’s run at 148. “I didn’t bowl very well my first time round, so it was great to come back and get them all,” says Mitchell.
The 20-year-old says it was even more special to have achieved the feat on Saxton Oval, a ground that has hosted the Black Caps and one that Mitchell rates as “a cool ground”. His team celebrated Mitchell’s double hat-trick and their win at the clubrooms. “It was a good night, even if my team-mates did make me wear a silly plastic crown,” says Mitchell. With strong batsmen in his team, Mitchell has had plenty of opportunity to hone his bowling skills this season and says he enjoys playing cricket “because you can always get better at it”. Rapt with the season that he says has been a lot of fun with a “cool group of guys”, Mitchell says he’s already looking forward to returning to the field next year with the same club.

There’s been an exciting development at the iconic Sprig & Fern Brewery, with the recent announcement of a major addition to their product portfolio, which will include 330ml six packs and 500 ml singles of their award-winning beer! These will be available for purchase from early April. Although the Sprig & Fern range of beer and seasonal limited releases have long been available to consumers at Sprig & Fern Taverns in Nelson, Tasman, Wellington and Christchurch, a select range of the bottled product has been available in 1.25L P.E.T only. “We have had a whole brand refresh throughout our taverns,” says Sprig &

Going into glass, both in the 330ml and 500ml bottles will give us bigger brand exposure throughout the whole country. There are people who like to frequent the taverns, but also a lot of people who may prefer to have a drink at home. Whether it’s family, friends, or if you’re having a barbeque, we have an extensive range of quality craft beers to choose from.” “Our rebrand is ‘Sprig & Fern Craft & Master Brewer and owner of Sprig and Fern Brewery Tracy Beer,’ with the play on the word ‘craft’ Banner and General Manager at Sprig and Fern Lee Brown anticipate the brewery’s launch into glass after Easter will be well received by the public. because we clean every tank as it’s emptied and my brewing ethos is staunch around quality and consistency and being well-made. design agency Inject which tasked them with “transforming tasting notes into a unique label, with illustrations provided by renowned artist Gina Kiel,” says Sprig & Fern General Manager Lee Brown. “For example, the West Coast I.P.A illustration evokes all the feelings of riding along the Californian coastline, the quintessential stars and stripes, and of course, loads of hops.” “Inject tasked me with coming up with two words that identify each of our successful craft beers, including those that are going into glass” says Tracy. “For the Scotch Ale 1.25L label, I came up with ‘deep and rich,’ so that’s what’s worded on the label, which is a play on the ocean and pearls and octopuses.” Meanwhile, the two brainstormed words for the Sprig & Fern premium lager ‘Tasman Reserve’ were ‘bold and bountiful.’ “So we’ve got a play on

Queen Street Upgrade works move into the area of the roundabout at Queen Street and Wensley Road this week. The roundabout will be closed to most traffic for several days at a time while contractor Downer lays new stormwater and water pipes through the roundabout. Vehicles will still be able to exit the Mall/Warehouse carpark turning left onto Queen Street.
Extended closure from mid-April
Positive Ageing Expo
Recovery Grants
6 April 2018, 10.00 am - 3.00 pm, Headingly Centre, Richmond. With more than 75 stallholders, the expo has plenty to offer anyone interested in making ageing a positive experience. There will be stallholders as diverse as the Vintage Car Club displaying classic cars, the Men’s Shed doing wood turning, the Nelson Historical Society promoting the region’s’ history, right through to Carfit car comfort and safety checks and NMIT nursing students conducting free health checks.
To assist residents affected by ex-cyclones Fehi and Gita, the Mayoral Relief Fund is accepting applications for grants until 22 April. The grants are split into two types, depending on your circumstances;
Motueka Kai Fest Sunday 8 April 2018, 10.00am - 3.00pm, Decks Reserve Motueka. This annual signature event celebrates Motueka’s abundant produce with more than 100 local food stalls and demonstrations, pageantry, entertainment and seminars. The whole community is involved, including schools, community groups and food industries. Entry is free.
In mid to late April the Queen Street/Wensley Road intersection will close again - this time for an extended period (about six weeks) to carry out the rest of the upgrade works in this area. As the only remainng entrance and exit point to the Richmond Mall/Warehouse carpark, Talbot Street will come under pressure during this period, and we will be making temporary changes to the street to minimise this as much as we can, including:
• $83,000 specifically targeted at business assistance for businesses negatively affected by recent cyclones, and • $20,000 to assist recovery through one-off hardship grants to residents to cover such things as the essentials for daily life (food, utilities and accommodation) not already covered by other support. Find out more: Visit tasman.govt.nz/link/recovery-grants for more information and to make an application.

Bomarea Spray Operation 5 April Kingsland Forest / Reservoir Creek
Date objections close: Monday 23 April 2018
Kingsland Forest and Reservoir Creek walkways and forest areas will be closed on Thursday 5 April to allow aerial spraying to take place. Signage is in place at track entrance points - please do not enter the area. Help us eradicate Bomarea
Council Meetings
Bomarea (Bomarea multiflora) invades remnant forests and shrublands. Native to Colombia and Ecuador, it is an invasive plant species in New Zealand and cannot be distributed or sold here. Spray programme
Unless otherwise stated, all meetings will be held at Council Chambers, 189 Queen Street, Richmond.
Agendas and Minutes for Council Meetings can be viewed on Council’s website at www.tasman.govt.nz.

Kingsland Forest will be closed to the public on Thursday 5 April for herbicide spraying to control Bomarea, weather permitting. Keep an eye out for signage at track entry points.
