Cyclists hit the Great Taste Trail Holiday-makers are being encouraged to bring their bikes to Nelson and check out the first official stage of the Great Taste Cycle Trail, which is now ready to go for summer.

The Great Taste Cycle Trail will eventually loop through the entire Nelson-Tasman region, enabling cyclists to make their way to all corners of the districts on just two wheels.

At its current stage, cyclists can pedal from the i-Site Visitor Centre on the corner of Trafalgar and Halifax St all the way to Mapua through the scenic coastal route, or through Brightwater, finishing in Wake-

field. A third segment from the Riverside Café in Upper Moutere to Riwaka was signed off last week. SEE PAGE 4

Plenty on offer for Richmond shoppers If you’re looking for some quality retail therapy, you can’t go past the busy shopping mecca of Richmond. With vibrant Queen Street filled with clothing boutiques, shoe stores, florists and cafes and a mall offering convenient family shopping, you can’t go past the second biggest shopping destination after Nelson city. Richmond Mall offers the largest shopping experience under one roof in the Top of the South with over 70 specialty stores, a wide ranging food court and two supermarkets. From international chain stores to locally owned businesses, some of fashion’s top brands can be found within the busy shopping Daryl O’Reilly of Richmond walks amongst the busy downtown centre. practical homewares and huge variety of gift ideas. Regular entertainment and attractions are held at the mall so keep an eye out for some family fun this summer. Sundial Square is surrounded by shops offering different food and drink so you can relax on the grass in the sun in between shopping sprees or pop into one of the cafes for lunch. Richmond Unlimited chairman David Hill says Richmond with its mall and busy main street “is really the one stop location for all your shopping needs.” Make sure you fit in time for shopping this summer and enjoy Richmond, a must see shopping destination.

Market Day returns to Richmond The largest market day in the Top of the South will be hitting Richmond’s Queen St on December 28. The Richmond Market Day will feature more than 170 stall holders from all over the country selling a wide variety of products, including crafts, clothing, food, and plants. Retailers are also allowed to have a table outside their store. Richmond Unlimited events and marketing coordinator Kim Quint says there will be free children’s entertainment and other live performers in Sundial Square as well. She is unaware of the number of event-goers in previous years but says it has been in its thousands every time. “This market is huge. There are a lot of tourists that come to it. We get people from all of the motor camps in Kaiteriteri and Tahuna.” • The Richmond Market Day will be held on December 28 in Queen St. It all kicks off at 9am with 175 different stalls. There will be free entertainment in Sundial Square.

Classics go on show The largest classic motorcycle club in the country will be holding its annual showcase on January 5 and 6 at the Stoke Memorial Hall. Each year the Nelson Classic & Vintage Motorcycle Club puts on a display of motorcycles all owned by current members. Club rules restrict the machines to more than 25 years old, from all continents and from all famous manufactures. Club member Steve White says there are approximately 180 members in the club and a lot of them still ride the same motorcycles as they did in their 20s. The display is held each year because it is a good chance to get all of the members together at once. This year’s show will be setup to help visitors source classic motorcycles, as it usually brings in more members. Club member Richard

Powley says it will be more of a “workshop” this year. “A lot of our members work in the motorcycle industry so we’re going to have stands showing what they do,” says Richard. “We’re going to have people selling parts and panel beaters, showing what the club does.” On Sunday there will be a swap-meet at the site from 9am to 12noon and anyone who wishes to sell motorcycle related material from bikes, clothing, books, parts are welcome. Doors open at 9am on both days and tickets for the event cost $5 for adults while children are free. For further information email nelsonclassicmc@hotmail.co.nz. • The Nelson Classic & Vintage Motorcycle Club is holding its annual show at the Stoke Memorial Hall on January 5 and 6.

A retired Richmond couple have walked away with $5000 in their pockets after winning the sixth annual Shop ‘n’ Win competition. Tony and Doreen Connelly won after their entry was drawn out of an incredible 67,000 that were submitted to the competition, which runs in retail stores around Richmond in the lead up to Christmas. This year the number of entries soared well above any previous years that the Waimea Weekly promotion has run. Tony’s winning entry was filled out at Raeward Fresh and he says he was shocked and “very pleased” to win. After relocating

to Nelson last year after the Christchurch earthquake to Stillwater Gardens Retirement Village the couple were excited to have won the competition out of the blue. “We had no money when we came here and we didn’t know what to do or where to go. We are always in Raeward Fresh so to win this is a nice surprise.” Raeward Fresh owner Justin Blackler says he was extremely pleased that the Shop ‘n Win prize had gone to one of his customers. Justin won $2000 as part of the promotion and says he will be spending it on his staff. “I will absolutely be putting on a special Christmas shout for the team.”

Where to swim Swimming hot this summer spots this summer • The Roding River up Aniseed Valley is just ten minutes away from Richmond. Motorists can access the river via Aniseed Valley Rd, which is on the main highway south of Hope. All reserves have barbeques and are great picnic spots too. • Tahunanui Beach is off State Highway 6 at Tahunanui (turn at the lights next to KFC). It offers free barbeque amenities and free swimming. Lifeguards are on duty during peak times.

Nelson residents and holiday-makers are spoiled for choice when it comes to swimming spots. The usual question is do you go to the beach, the river or spend the day at the pool? Following last year’s flooding, all of the rivers in the Tasman District are now open again and the fine weather has made Nelson’s iconic beaches more popular than ever. To the left is a list we’ve combined of the best places to go swimming this summer, which also includes the three major public swimming pool complexs. The rivers and beaches also make for great picnicking areas. Which is your favourite?

• Rabbit Island offers plenty of amenities including public toilets, free barbeques, along with plenty of space to have a picnic with the family and swim on its massive 8km long beach. Rabbit Island is just a 15 minute drive from Richmond by turning onto Redwood Rd, off Appleby Highway.

Eight strong and straight out of the Waikato, Katchafire have been at the forefront of New Zealand reggae around ten years now. Fresh from touring the globe, front man Logan Bell was excited to finally hitting the front in his own environment, with the group set to perform at the Riwaka Hotel on January as part of their NZ Summer Tour. “A lot of the places on the tour are quite significant to us. I’m from Oponui, which is up north, and a lot of these spots are places we’ve played before and the vibe was epic,” says Logan. “Aotearoa has been the forefront of our operations and they’re our first and foremost fans and supporters and that will never change.” Concert-goers can expect new sounds since the last time Katchafire visited the region. However, classics such as Get Away, Seriously and Groove Again will always remain on the set-list. “We like to keep it fresh and the boys have been in the studio so hopefully we can pull out some new tunes and test it.” Although it is early days in the recording process for their next album, Logan says the new music is an extension on what Katchafire has produced before. “I think some of the boys are pushing the boundaries a little bit more with their own interpretation of the different experiences we’ve had over the last few years and it’s going to make for some freshness for sure bro.” Katchafire recently toured Europe and South America while spending nine weeks of the year based in the United States. Brazil, known for its strong reggae base, has taken to Katchafire, who filmed a documentary there last year. “We’ve been offshore more than we’ve been home. We’ve always lead with our live show and it’s something

Katchafire front man Logan Bell performs in Nelson early last year. The Waikato reggae group is returning to play at the Riwaka Hotel. people can’t burn, you know? It’s hard work doing this as a living, it’s full on, but that’s the dream.” The Riwaka Hotel will be the hub for all things music this summer with eleven of New Zealand’s top artists lining up in the space of just one week. The venue is just 37 minutes drive from Richmond and 52 minutes drive from Nelson City. Because of its close proximity to Kaiteriteri Beach, many concert-goers spend the afternoon over the hill. The full list of concerts at the Riwaka Hotel are; Friday, December 28; Kora with The Nudge. Sunday, December 30; Six60 Summer Tour with David Dallas. Monday December 31; Shihad Heavyweight Kings Of Rock with I Am Giant. Wednesday, January 2; Katchafire with Ladi 6. Thursday, January 3; Jimmy Barnes - The Red Hot Summer Tour with Gin Wigmore.

I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Summer afternoon may be two of the most beautiful words in the English language, and summer afternoons in Tasman truly live up to this status. While enjoying the natural beauty and sun of our area, it is also important to stay safe; from the sun’s rays, and from falling into careless driving habits which can sneak in during holidays. This is a time to celebrate with family and friends, and reflecting on what is most important in one’s life. 2012 has been a good year for the region, and I have been proud to serve as a member of a government, which has achieved: Around 500 extra elective surgeries per year for West Coast and Nelson-MarlborChris ough DHBs since 2008. Auchinvole. Rolling out faster broadband to schools, hospitals, and communities across Tasman. $10.6 Million to upgrade and modernise 53 schools in West Coast and Tasman. Purchased new conservation land around Kahurangi National Park. 2013 is shaping up to be another important year for West CoastTasman. Remember, I’m here to serve you, so if you ever have any issues, you can get in touch at Chris. Auchinvole@parliament.govt.nz.

Last year Nelson declared itself the craft brewing capital of New Zealand and looking at the list of breweries in the region it’s hard to argue with the title. Nelson and Tasman has 12 craft breweries services, a growing number of bar taps dedicated to the local drops and this year Lonely Planet hailed the region’s craft beer trail. The trail is made up of breweries and bars that sell local beer and has become a tourist magnet ever since. Many of these locally owned, familyrun breweries and outlets welcome visitors for tours, sampling at the bar, having a meal or takeaway sales. Share a pint with locals, learn about our history and experience the wide range of unique beers. Whether you prefer an icy pilsner or a cask-pulled ale, you’ll find it in Nelson. Some can be reached by foot from your lodging, others along a nice cycle loop, and the rest are worth the drive. Here are some of the local breweries on

Fishing with

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club On behalf of the DBFC I would like to welcome all the fishing holiday makers to Nelson. You are fortunate enough to have arrived when the fishing is nearing its best. The Top of the South is blessed with a multitude of fishing grounds and is just waiting for you to make the most of them. As always at this time of the year the boat ramps, beaches and water ways are always extremely busy. Take care to find out the lay of the land from the locals as their local knowledge and advice will help enhance your day out. Make sure you are aware of local fish limits and sizes for specific areas, as they will differ from your own location. If fishing in the Marlborough Sounds for blue cod please make yourself familiar with the strict laws regarding the taking of these fish. The laws will be heavily enforced by MAF over the holiday period. Tasman Bay has been producing some excellent snapper and they are being taken out in the deeper water straight out from Nelson. Head out into the middle of the bay in at least 15-17 metres of water, burley and stray line rigs with fresh baits, pillies or squid. The other alternatives are to fish in close to Rabbit Island or the Boulder Bank with flasher rigs to target the smaller snapper. Please also note that from approximately the end of the Glen, including Cable Bay to Pepin Island is a marine reserve and a no fishing zone. Past here is Delaware Bay which has been fishing well for snapper and

gurnard. Kahawai are about in prolific numbers this season and can be caught absolutely anywhere in the Top of the South. The Boulder Bank is due to go off anytime with good numbers of kingfish. So if you ever wanted to land one of these awesome fish, now is the time to do it. These fish don’t fight as hard as the ones in deeper water but all the same will take you to the cleaners if you don’t take it

Remember that it is always the skipper’s job to ensure the crews safety and safety of others at all times when on the high seas. On that note the DBFC wishes its members, locals and holiday makers alike, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Marty Kain hasn’t been reminding his coach that the two upcoming HRV Cup matches could be the first time he’s played domestic cricket in his hometown. The 24 year old all-rounder is hoping his performances will do the convincing instead. “Oh it’d be brilliant. I’m sure my family would be really proud and that my mates will be here giving me plenty of abuse from the sidelines,” he says. The former Waimea College cricketer left Nelson when he was just 15 years old to pursue a cricket scholarship in Christchurch. Now back in his city of birth, Marty is juggling his new job as a real estate agent with his cricketing career and he’s ticking off his goals both on and off the pitch. He has played in all of the bottom-placed Stags’ first HRV Cup matches so far. But one thing that has alluded him during his domestic career is playing at Saxton Oval. However, that could

all change on January 1 and 3 with the side set to take on the Canterbury Wizards in a double header. “As long as I can go well in the next fews games then I might get the opportunity. I played the first two twenty20s and this is obviously a spinner-friendly wicket with big boundaries as well. It should make a difference to getting hit out of the park in Napier by Jesse [Ryder].” Marty believes Central Districts need to win six or seven games to make the playoffs, but they are certainly not out of contention just yet. The side could be bouyed by the return of Blackcap Ross Taylor who is expected to be back in time for the two Nelson fixtures. Now that he is a contracted player, Marty says the only difference is being paid to play. “Obviously I’m working at Harcourts now and it actually gives me plenty of time to be in the office. I’m working on that side of my career as well so it’s a good balance.” Both matches begin at 2pm and tickets can be bought at the gate.

For some their work is done... Andrew and Lynne Robinson of Richmond with their children Jake, 15, and Aimee, 11, enjoying a day out at the Mapua wharf. The wharf precinct will become temporarily pedestrian only over the summer period to enable families to enjoy the area safely. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.

Mapua has plenty to offer Mapua is set to buzz this summer now that the Mapua Wharf precinct is temporarily a pedestrian only zone for a part of the season’s summer holidays. The Mapua wharf area will be closed through to February 7 to all motorists aside from service vehicles and those launching boats. The idea to open the space up to the public and create a safer environment over the busy season has been welcomed by Mapua residents as the area is frequently used by families and cyclists. Reducing the amount of traffic in the area has made the area more enjoyable for everybody to use says Brian Ensor, chair of the committee for the Mapua Water Front Precinct Advisory Group. Brian says the wharf precinct is extremely popular over the holiday period and the vehicle ban is about enhancing the experience for visitors to the area. With the development of parking nearby and the increased use of both the wharf and Mapua

Ferry over the summer Brian says the move has made sense to all users of the area. The Mapua Ferry is now a well-used feature along the Tasman Great Taste Trail and is a huge attraction for visitors says Brian. “The cycle trail and Mapua Ferry have really opened up the wharf area for a range of recreational activities. There is cycle and scooter hire available and many people are catching the ferry over to swim at Rabbit Island or making the most of the great restaurants and boutique stores at the wharf.” With development continuing on the Waterfront park including the completion of the toilet block and shelter Brian says visitors and locals alike can look forward to using the wharf and park to its full potential this summer. • Mapua is open seven days to the public, has free parking and is approximately a 20 minute drive from Richmond. Follow State Highway 60 from Richmond and turn right onto Mapua Dr.

Falcons ready to fly Phillip Rollo The task couldn’t be harder for the Nelson Falcons, who face last year’s defending champions in their inaugural match. But despite the all-important clash against Canterbury United on January 13 and the announcement that Nelson has bid for a senior team, youth coach Davor Tavich is certainly not feeling the added pressure. A reasonably successful pre-season trip to the North Island gave the Falcons their two first victories and it was those results that have given the team confidence that they deserve to be in the ASB Youth League. Cory Brown and Ross McPhie will have no part in the Falcons’ first season, being called into the New Zealand Under-17 team instead. But it is the experience of two overage players, captain Mark Johnston and goal keeper Coey Turipa that Davor hopes will help carry the youngsters. “There’s a lot of young boys that are promising but the two senior boys are probably going to be called upon a lot. It’s good for the boys to learn from them and the work ethic from the two senior boys is amazing and the other guys just feed off it,” says Davor. Another experienced campaigner Davor will call on is Erik Panzer, who captained Canterbury United to the ASB Youth League title last year and also played ASB Premiership football for their senior team. The former Garin College student

is has just finished his first season in the United States on a college scholarship. Fox Slotemaker will be available after spending the year at Mt Albert Grammar School in Auckland where he was part of the Kevin Fallon-coached side that won the New Zealand Secondary School Football Championship in Nelson. Davor believes the Canterbury match will be the toughest of the campaign with a number of the opposition players already boasting ASB Premiership experience with the Canterbury United. “We haven’t seen Canterbury at all and I’ve seen the list and for this youth The Nelson Falcons ASB Youth League squad will be led by Nelson Suburbs skipper Mark Johnleague they’re fairly old. They’ve ston and vice captained by Nelson College’s Harry Tod-Smith. The side plays its first official match, got 12 players that are 18 and al- against Canterbury United on January 13 at Trafalgar Park. Photo: Phillip Rollo. though we’re confident that we can compete it’s going to be a lot harder we reckon we’re than what we faced in Wellington. I think they will be the best team in the competition.” But Nelson’s strength will be its unity, according to Davor, who believes the fact most of the Falcons have played together for their individual schools and clubs for a number of years will make them gel a lot quicker. Davor was enjoying his role as the head coach, saying it was a “real honour” to be part of the coaching staff in the team’s first season.
