Suspicions over Rabbit Island fire Colin Williscroft Reporter

colin@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The cause of last Friday’s fire on Rabbit Island is being treated as suspicious.

Rural Fire Network boss Ian Reade, who is based in Richmond, said the cause of the fire was still being investigated but anyone who saw people acting suspiciously at the eastern end of Rabbit Island mid to late

morning that day should contact police. Fire and Emergency New Zealand Southern Communications shift manager Andrew Norris said fire crews from Richmond, Appleby, Mapua and Brightwater were first

called around noon on Friday to fight the fire, which was in sand dunes near the forest on Forestry Road. He said with the help of two helicopters and a number of water tankers they contained the fire

on the seaward side of the dunes, although there were fears that the reasonably strong northerly wind that was blowing at the time would push the fire into pine trees.

Crews stayed there for the rest of the afternoon and were then called back on Saturday morning, Reade said. “It sparked up again, so we had a couple of crews there on Saturday. We kept an eye on it for most of the day.” Fire crew were back again on Sunday to monitor the situation, he said. Winds on Friday and Sunday only made fire crews’ jobs more challenging, he said. Friday’s sea breeze was replaced by strong southerlies on Sunday. Although that meant the fire was blown towards the sea it also reduced the humidity, he said, drying out grass and other small material - effectively providing more fuel for the fire. “It was the trifecta - hot temperatures, wind to push the fire along and low humidity, around 30 per cent, which meant any spark

could catch in the grass.” All rural areas in the Waimea are under a restricted fire status, which means a permit is required to light one outdoors. Reade said in general fire permits were not being issued due to the warm, dry conditions, and it was likely a prohibited fire season - which means no outdoor fires can be lit - will be introduced across the Waimea Basin within a week or so. The Tasman District Council closed all wood-fired barbecues on Rough Island and Rabbit Island on January 11 due to the increasing fire risk, and said they will stay closed until the dry conditions ease considerably. The forest on Rabbit Island is worth a lot to the council. A spokesman said as at June 2018 the trees were valued at $19.6 million. They earned an average gross income over the last two years of about $4.4 million.

Tasman housing market buoyant Colin Williscroft Reporter

colin@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Tasman house sales bucked the national trend last month, with the number of properties sold and the median price paid both up on December 2017. It came as no surprise to Real Estate Institute of New Zealand Nelson/Marlborough spokesman Darryl Marshall, who said the area was becoming increasingly attractive for people seeking a more balanced lifestyle. The Tasman district was one of only four around the country - the others being West Coast, Gisborne and Hawkes Bay to have an increase in sales compared to the same month a year earlier. The jump in house sales month on month from 51 to 66 represented an increase of about 30 per cent, while the number of sales in Auckland, Taranaki, Wellington, Otago and Southland fell by just under 25 per cent to just over 13 per cent respectively for the

same period. On top of that the median price paid for a Tasman house for the month was $585,000, up 6.4 per cent on the same month a year earlier. Marshall said the Tasman district had always been seen as a lifestyle destination and the steady rise in house prices in the area over the past few years reflected that. The Tasman market did not really have peaks and troughs, he said. Instead there was more likely to be growth, followed by a levelling out, then more growth. However, for the past three years sales and prices had continued upwards, driven by demand. Part of that was driven by job prospects and the ease of commuting, he said. The internet meant more people could work from home, while good air access was also attractive to people considering a move to the area, he said. Another driver was the significant local and national

investment in both residential and commercial development. “For the size of the town, there is a lot going on. That always provides a bit of comfort. “The whole area is developing. It’s becoming far more cosmopolitan.” He said the area had become known as the five minute region – five minutes to work, the beach, shops, schools and a host of recreation opportunities. “All of this makes us an attractive destination. This place offers people a balance to their lifestyle that is maybe not available in other places. “The secret is out.” The growth in residential sales followed similar good news for the lifestyle block market. REINZ figures released late last year showed that lifestyle block sales for the wider Nelson/ Tasman area for the three months to November 2018 were up 21 per cent for the same period a year earli-er. The median price paid for a Tasman lifestyle block was $224,514.

Annual Tapawera visual art exhibition about to open

Don’t just dump flares: The Tasman District Council is urging people wanting to dispose of emergency beacons and flares not to just take them to the dump. A council spokesman said two flares and EPRIBs (emergency positionindicating radio beacons) from a commercial vessel were recently dumped at the Mariri (Motueka) Resource Recovery Centre. They were located when one of the smoke flares went off, and the skipper/owner of the vessel has since been identified. Beyond the dangers of flares going off in a recovery centre, the spokesman said EPIRBs create havoc when they go off in the process of deteriorating – unless disarmed they notify the rescue centre and a search is begun. New Zealand Police arms officer Derek Coffey said the Richmond, Motueka and Nelson police stations all accept flares, firearms and the like for destruction. However, with explosives it is best to contact police before bringing the item into the police station, so that its volatility can be established. In some cases, police will arrange for the pick-up of the items in a safe method of transport.

Richmond claims competition with a cause Matthew McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

More than $763,000 has been donated to different hospice services throughout the country after the Christmas fundraising campaign supported by Farmers department stores, including those in Richmond and Nelson. This is the fifth year of the campaign, with Farmers raising nearly $3.5 million to help provide hospice services free of charge. All funds raised within each store remain in the local community, helping provide care for people with lifelimiting conditions and their whānau. This year the Richmond

and Nelson branches of Farmers raised a combined $28,823.06, enabling the Nelson Tasman Hospice to continue its service. In its second year, outlets in Richmond and Nelson raised a total of $17,656.37 - so the amount raised has been rising steadily. Each year, the Nelson and Richmond branches of Farmers have a competition to see who can raise the most funds for the local hospice. It’s competition with a cause. This year, Farmers Richmond Mall was victorious over the Nelson branch. Farmers Richmond manager Deon de Clerq and Nelson Tasman

Photo: Matt McCrorie Hospice chief executive Frans Dellebeke thanked everyone in the community who participated, whether it was through making donations at the till, participating in the tree of remembrance or purchasing the Hospice Christmas baubles. “We had a big boost after Seven Sharp did a piece on the campaign. “We had so many people

coming in the next day to buy the baubles. We were pretty much sold out. We had to ask for more to be sent to us,” says Deon. Even the awareness that the fundraising campaign creates is a big help to the Nelson Tasman Hospice. “The awareness raising that comes from being involved with Farmers is invaluable. commitment from all staff and the people at Farmers Richmond and in the city have contributed to this amazing result,” Frans says. Hospice New Zealand chief executive Mary Schuamacher agreed. “For five years now, the entire Farmers team has embraced supporting hospice at Christmas and alongside their customers continue

to make a real difference to people using hospice services throughout New Zealand. It is humbling to be the beneficiary of such generosity and kindness.” The fundraising efforts of Farmers is seen as a big help to the Nelson Tasman Hospice, which currently has an operating funding shortfall of about $1 million a year.

Algae, as well as rubbish and animal carcases, have been discovered this summer at popular Lee Valley swimming spots.

Lee River pollution concerns residents Matthew McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Swimmers and residents have expressed concerns about the levels of pollution in the Lee River this summer. Swimmers say that algae has grown dramatically in the river this summer, with large clumps being discovered in popular swimming holes along the Lee River, covering rocks and making it unpleasant for swimming, as well as unsafe for dogs and young kids. Rubbish and animal carcases

have also been cause for concern. Residents who live near the river have said that they have had problems with rubbish being left in the river from unthoughtful swimmers, as well as possum carcasses being dumped in the river further upstream. This is not the first time that the Tasman area has had issues with river rubbish this summer, with broken shards of glass being left near popular swimming spots in the Aniseed River. Earlier this month the Tasman

District Council issued a warning about toxic algae in the lower Wai-iti and Waimea rivers. The algae is natural and occurs during extended periods of low flow in rivers. The warning will be in place until the next rainfall event that will cause enough flooding to wash the toxic algae off, the council said. Parts of some other rivers such as the Motueka, Lower Motupiko, Sherry, Moutere and Takaka may also be affected, the council said, adding that anyone who saw toxic algae should let them know.

Webcams used to improve safety at popular park spots Matthew McCrorie Reporter

Power boat regatta to return to Rotoiti Its official - the 2019 New Zealand Power Boat National Championships are coming to Lake Rotoiti on the weekend of February 23 and 24. Rotoiti Power Boat Club spokesman Joe Blakiston says the organising committee has worked tirelessly to secure the event in the magnificent national park environment and it is looking forward to a repeat of their last regatta in 2017, which has been regarded as the most

successful New Zealand power boat regatta in recent memory. “We are looking at eight GP Hydroplanes racing for national title honours, which is a sight and sound unsurpassed in motorsport,” Joe says. The other exciting classes of Formula 1, 2 and 3, plus the national championships in inboard and outboard classes, and the popular junior and clubman classes, will make for an actionpacked weekend.

The nationals are on the Saturday and a full programme of racing is scheduled for the Sunday, so it will pay to lock in the weekend now, Joe says. The club works closely with DOC to put the event on, he says, adding that the department is a great partner in keeping the event going. To ensure everything runs smoothly a “no dogs, no drones and no rubbish left in the area” policy will be strictly enforced.

NOTICE OF HELICOPTER SURVEY OF TRANSMISSION LINES IN YOUR AREA.

The use of conservation webcams in both Anchorage and Awaroa by the Tasman District Council has helped improved public safety, the council says. The council recently partnered with Project Janszoon, a private trust that has a goal of restoring and preserving the wildlife of Abel Tasman National Park. Tasman harbourmaster Dan Cairney says that a council presence in Anchorage and Awaroa wasn’t possible day and night, so the council approached Project Janszoon in July 2018 for help. Both Anchorage and Awaroa are popular spots in the Able Tasman area, with many boats anchoring in the area over the summer. However, Dan says that several complaints from people on anchored boats about the speed and wake of passing boats raised safety concerns. Dan says that the wake from speeding boats has been an issue for the up to 100 boats that anchor in the Anchorage bay. “The problem being that boats are sheltered from most of the sea and wind conditions and the occupants of the boats get surprised when their boat is hit by a one metre plus wake from a large vessel.” He says this has led to several incidents and accidents and is taken seriously as a safety concern. Currently the system is set up so that the harbourmaster receives 30 second screenshots that are date

and time stamped, so he can go through old footage to identify safety concerns. “We received great support for the idea and now we have 24-hour access to the imaging.” Bruce Vander Lee, director of Project Janszoon, is pleased the webcams can be used to promote safe boating at Anchorage and Awaroa. “We know residents and visitors were concerned about boat speed in these popular spots and the feedback we are getting is skippers are behaving in a safe manner, so that is great to hear.”

Project Janszoon director Bruce Vander Lee is happy that the trust’s webcams are being used to promote safe boating in the Anchorage and Awaroa areas.

The Sarau Festival has become a popular addition to the Tasman district’s calendar. Photo: Supplied

Festival returns The Sarau Festival will once again be bringing some sweet sounds and fresh flavours to Nelson anniversary weekend when it swings into action in Upper Moutere on Sunday, February 3. The annual event at Moutere Hills Community Centre, which is in its 12th year, features a country market of more than 100 stalls alongside hours of entertainment for the whole family. There will be live music, including performances from local musicians Bella Shand and Bo Ade-Simpson, before headline act Cameron and Co. featuring Johnnie Cameron – a Nelson-based band whose sound brings together pop, blues, rock, country, jazz and R&B - round off the evening. A number of vendors will be offering a wide range of food and drinks, including traditional cream teas, with produce made in the Moutere and beyond. Other stalls will feature handicrafts, clothing and much more, while for bibliophiles the monster book fair is back and promises plenty of bargain reads. For further food inspiration, Reni Wereta-Gargiulo will host a cooking demonstration. She is the owner and business manager of Nelson’s Kiwi Kai, which places an emphasis on indigenous fusion and seafood and has catered for a host of local and international events. Budding photographers can show off their best pictures in a photo competition that covers six different categories. Entries for this close on January 30 and the public can vote for the winner of the viewers’ choice award on the day when all the images will be on display.

Also keeping the public in the frame will be a photo booth at the festival for friends and family to get shots of themselves - whether sensible, silly or both - that can be posted online. Further celebrating the region and all it has to offer will be a history tent with insights into the community’s past, and some top lots will be up for grabs in a silent auction. On top of all that, children can have plenty of fun at the NBS kids zone featuring games, activities and a range of bouncy castles. A number of creatures from Upper Moutere’s Animal Farm will also be on display for people to pet and learn more about. Sarau Festival organiser Sam Lowe says volunteers have been busy behind the scenes preparing for the event, which raises funds for groups in the local community. “All the money we make goes back into supporting people in our area, which means besides having a great day out socialising and discovering new tastes and sounds, people know they are helping others at the same time,” she says. “It’s always a fun atmosphere and we look forward to welcoming people from near and far to celebrate with us and enjoy all that the Moutere area has to offer.” The festival is building towards becoming a zero-waste event and visitors are encouraged to bring their own plates and utensils to eat with. Gates open at 3pm on Sunday, February 3. Entry is $5 for adults and free for children, with the entertainment running until about 9pm. For more details, see saraufestival. co.nz.

Summer is a lovely time to go horse riding! “People who love horses don’t necessarily want the expense of owning one, which is often why they choose to ride our horses,” says Eleena Kennedy who owns Classical Equestrian Art of New Zealand in Ruby Bay. “Our lessons can give children the experience of riding a horse and parents can enjoy riding too; it’s a great way to take time out!” At Classical Equestrian Art of New Zealand, les-

Wasps targeted: The Department of Conservation will use a targeted wasp baiting method to reduce wasps in public conservation land in the Nelson Lakes district until the end of next month. Introduced wasps threaten native birds, killing chicks in native forests as the

emerge from their eggs. They also attack honey bees, raid their hives and rob their honey. The effects include lost honey production, in turn creating higher pollination costs for the horticulture industry. Tennis pro back in town: A former Richmond Tennis Club junior who is playing on the International Tennis Federation circuit despite having to play with a prosthetic on his lower left arm is back in town to share his experiences. Alex, along with training partner Sam RyanZiegann, will be at the club on Gladstone Road this Sunday after 4pm. There will be an opportunity for a child to have a hit with him. The event will also feature a social tennis hit and a barbecue from 6pm.

The Tasman District Library Richmond opened last Sunday between 1 and 4pm for the first time. The event was commemorated with prizes, giveaways and cake. Tasman District Mayor Richard Kempthorne was there to greet library members as they came to check out the new hours. The library was busy, with people waiting at the doors at 1pm, eager to check it out. Library team member Debbie said that just over 400 people were there, so it was a busy afternoon for the library staff. The library was pleased with the turnout, and they expect to remain steady on a Sunday afternoon.

Richmond Bowling Club

Centennial

It’s been 100 years and locals still love bowling! First founded on February 4th, 1919, the Richmond Bowling Club has seen many changes over the past 100 years, with membership today gaining strength. Many locals are quietly anticipating the first weekend of February when the Richmond Bowling Club celebrates its centenary, with an exciting line-up of events planned over 3 days. “We have a tournament happening on the Saturday (February 2nd), with many bowlers attending,” a member of the Richmond Bowling Club says “We also value the support of other clubs in the area that have submitted teams. We have invited as many past members as we could get hold of and a number of them will be attending the centennial dinner being held on the Sunday evening (February 3rd), with guest speakers organised. There will be distinguished members of the bowling fraternity attending either the tournament or the dinner. On Monday (February 4th), the game is for club members only, who will enjoy a nice afternoon tea. Anyone is welcome to come along and watch the game in action!” Reflecting on how much the uniforms have changed in the past 100 years, in times past hats, ties, blazers and long trousers were worn by the men-only Richmond Bowling Club. By 1966 the ‘wearing of shorts was approved for week days only!’ Another striking development happened in 1952, when the Richmond Women’s Bowling Club was established. Women were allowed on the green on Wednesdays, with dresses and skirts the correct length! With the sale of the 2-bowling green property at lower Queen Street in 2012, the Bowling Club moved to Club Waimea where an artificial surface

was installed by the Richmond Bowling Club members. This gave access to an all-weather surface, enabling bowls to be played 12 months of the year, and low maintenance. The Richmond Bowling Club today is a very social, welcoming and helpful to new members starting up in bowls! New members really appreciate the support of the more senior club members. For more information, visit or phone the Club: Richmond Bowling Club, 345 Lower Queen Street, Richmond Phone 544-8891

Just a thought...

I have just got back from fighting a fire with other Fire fighters. Have you felt the heat lately? The hills are dry, the plants in the garden are wilting and the only thing growing are the dandelions in the lawn. It is not just the heat but also the winds help to dry things out. This type of weather puts people on edge because the fire danger continues to soar upwards. As the temperature rises and the humidity falls the potential for a fire rises and all those that have something to do with fire fighting,

especially rural fires get nervous. Our district is drying out. Water plays an important part in our life. Water is the most abundant resource on the surface of the earth and water comprises about 70 percent of our bodies. We can live without food for many days; yet we can only live a few days without water. We must have water or we will die, or be serious danger. There is a famous story told in the bible of Jesus meeting a woman

WEDNESDAY 23 January 2019

at a well and asking her for water. This surprised her because due to the customs of the day they normally would not associate with each other. As they sat and talked Jesus identified himself as the water of life and whoever drunk what he offered would never be found thirsty. (John 4:1-26) Jesus took time to talk and listen to this woman and this resulted in the woman’s life being refreshed and given life. The challenge for us is do we spend time and talk to

others, how about having a coffee or a glass of water, with someone who you know has a problem in their life? Being there to listen and support. Often we cannot estimate how much this means to them. In effect we become a channel in which living water can flow and in this way you might just be putting out a fire that threatens to destroy their life. A young Richmond cricket fan got to meet some of his cricketing heroes earlier this month. Twelve-year-old Oscar Perrott, who attends Waimea College and plays for Waimea Toi Toi United, won the ANZ competition to be at the coin toss before the start of the one day international between the Blackcaps and Sri Lanka at Saxton Oval earlier this month. Oscar, who joined the two captains Kane Williamson and Lasith Malinga for the pre-match coin toss on the pitch, hopes to play for the Blackcaps himself one day. He said it was hard to pick his favourite part of the day. “I loved getting to experience the game up close, meeting Kane Williamson was so cool! It was also really cool getting my own Blackcaps clothing.” Head of sponsorship at ANZ, Sue McGregor, said Oscar was one of 23 young cricketers selected to take part in the prematch ritual this cricket season.

Providing the fibre network Nelson Tasman needs for the future Many people in Nelson Tasman may not know that Network Tasman has its own dedicated fibre network, spanning from Motueka to Waikawa Bay, near Picton.

Braden Prideaux, Sport Tasman community sport advisor, says the Aotearoa Bike Challenge aims to show people how easy and enjoyable cycling can be.

Get on your bike next month By Peter Jones, Sport Tasman Normally when your workmates tell you to “get on your bike,” things aren’t going so well. However, next month it would be wise to heed that advice. The third Aotearoa Bike Challenge invites the nation’s workplaces to encourage staff to mount up during the month of February, earning each company points along the way, which leads to prizes. The competition is free and people can cycle on a regular bike or an e-bike anywhere they like, anytime they like, during the challenge period. They only

need to ride for 10 minutes for it to count. It is all about participation, not how far or how fast various staff can ride. Prizes are offered based on staffing levels, with those organisations who are able to get the highest percentage of their total workforce turning the pedals coming out on top. Last February, 63 companies and 484 people took part in the 2018 Aotearoa Bike Challenge, including 55 “new riders” in the top of the south region. Braden Prideaux, Sport Tasman community sport advisor, said the Aotearoa Bike Challenge is a fantastic opportunity to show

more people how easy and enjoyable cycling can be. “We would love to see more businesses and organisations in our region participate in this free workplace challenge, reap the benefits of getting more active, as well as generate some healthy competition between work colleagues.” Spot prizes on offer include a seven-day mountain bike tour on the Old Ghost Road and Heaphy Track, bikes, e-bike conversion kits and smart helmets. Registrations are open and it’s free to participate. For more information, go to www.lovetoride.net/nz

The fibre network has been developed to support Nelson Tasman’s economic growth and is totally separate to the government-funded ultra-fast broadband network rollout that you may see being deployed in parts of the Tasman region. “Network Tasman believes fibre optic connections in workplaces, schools, and in homes can boost economic development, ignite innovation, and improve the way people live and work,” says Network Tasman’s Telecommunications Manager, Andrew Stanton. “That’s why Network Tasman has been supporting businesses, communities, and the national education network known as N4L (Network 4 Learning) across the top of the South Island for many years. “We like to think the early deployment of Network Tasman’s fibre network in parts of Marlborough and Tasman has contributed to the Nelson Tasman’s vibrant, buoyant economy. “Because our network is all fibre it can be used for the kind of demanding applications that businesses require today. It’s also fast, reliable and secure – things that are not just nice to have these days but absolute necessities.” Network Tasman is also looking ahead to future proof its fibre network. Network Tasman is making sure it’s ready to meet future requirements for business connections and residential connections. “Network Tasman has recently upgraded and installed worldleading GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Networks) equipment that will be able to deliver a dedicated, consistently fast, reliable connection to each house on the fibre network,” says Stanton. “By installing this new technology we can offer broadband speeds that will keep the most data hungry consumers happy, with a 1Gig home connection.” “Not only are we providing super-fast broadband speeds we are teaming up with a national service provider so customers can combine their home and mobile plans in one package. Keep an eye on www.networktasman.co.nz/fibre for more details.”

CLUB WAIMEA

Filling the vacant Director’s spot at Club Waimea is widely respected foundation member Geoff Mead. The son of a Tadmor dairy farmer, Geoff brings a wealth of experience to the board table, including decades of working in the building industry.

Sioux Line Dance final dance for 2018 saw 80 plus dancers don their dancing shoes and trip the light fantastic for the afternoon. As well as a prize for ‘Best Dressed’ there were raffles and spot prizes. Paul McIntyre from Nelson Tasman Hospice Trust came to speak with our group to extend their thanks,

Happy New Year everyone! Hope you have all had a great xmas and start to the new year. The weather has been fantastic, so smiles all round and into another interesting year at the Club. We have many things to look into this year: some ablutions upgrades in both the caravan park and hall facilities, hall painting and LED lighting, snooker room refurb and heating, external signage to sell, website upgrade, whether our current table configuration is the best for what space we have, and all the usual ongoing maintenance issues a business like our endures. So, as you can see, another busy year

Lower Queen St, Richmond Phone 543 9179 www.clubwaimea.co.nz

I consider it to be a privilege and pleasure to be appointed a Board member of Club Waimea. Being a foundation member and paid up member every year since, I do have the Club at heart, both now and for the future. Born the son of a Tadmor dairy farmer, I attended Tapawera Area School, before moving to Richmond in the early sixties, where I attended Waimea College for one and a bit years. At this point I secured a building apprenticeship with Wilkes Construction, and was made a foreman at an early age. Subsequently I teamed up with Allan Martin, and Mead

(including the nursing staff, patients and their families), for our unique fundraising during this last year, providing items for the Hospice itself and for patient’s comfort whilst still at home. Dancers came from Blenheim, Motueka and Nelson to attend. We also had three generations of

ahead! Keep an eye out for upcoming special events, quiz nights, St Pat’s day, Melbourne Cup, etc as the entertainment committee will be working hard to bring some memorable moments to the year. The success of the Club is in our continued membership growth, so encourage people to come along and see what we have to offer, enjoy our surroundings and become part of our big family. This in turn enables us to keep moving forward and providing better facilities for all. Enough from me, let’s get in and have a great Club Waimea year! Cheers, Wayne Williams

and Martin Builders came into existence, now 48 years later still happily in partnership. Married to Annette for 49 years, raising 2 children, and thoroughly enjoying the company of three grandchildren, life is great. With my experience in the building industry, I am confident that I can contribute wisely when decision making round the board room table. Thank you, Club Waimea, for your support. Beers and Cheers, Geoff Mead

WEDNESDAY 23 January 2019

Summer Roaster events closely fought By Yvonne West Cloud cover on Saturday meant the temperature did not soar into the high 20s as it had in previous years for the Wakefield 10km Summer Roaster. While it was still hot, conditions were reasonable for the 60 runners and walkers who took on the challenge of the event, with its notorious hill climb up Totara View Road. Competition among the leaders was fierce, with first place going

to Chris Sharland, who finished in 39 minutes 26 seconds, just ahead of Paula Canning and Klaatje Van Schie. The walkers also provided an exciting finish. Alan West was first home in 68.55, with only five seconds separating the next three walkers, Ian Courtenay 70.29, Darryl Nish 70.29 and Tania Gardiner 70.30. The 5km event was won by Alastair Cotterill in 25.55, with Sally-Anne Jones the first woman home in 31.13.

Conditions were not too bad for competitors in last weekend’s Wakefield 10km Summer Roaster. Photo: Supplied

Rabbit Island triathlon attracts good turnout By Peter Gibbs Hayden Squance led from start to finish for a convincing win at the Proper Crisps Olympic distance triathlon at Rabbit Island yesterday. After a multi-circuit triangular course at Rabbit Island, the national champion emerged from the 1500m swim with a lead of five minutes over Brendon Hughes. Long distance specialist Hayden Harper was a minute further back, ahead of Bill Revell, the leading M60-69 contender. Jess Barnes was the first woman from the water, ahead of Kim Turner and Carys Coleman. There was little change at the front of the field over the 40km bike and 10km run, except for the growing gaps in the field, with Squance extending further from Harper

and the rest of the field fighting their own battles. Competitors found the head wind a challenge biking the 5km towards the main road on each of the four bike laps, but revelled in the tail wind on each return. Sean Martin pulled out a strong bike and run to move into third place ahead of Hughes, with Revell finishing in fifth. Barnes was next to finish, four minutes ahead of Coleman, who fought her own battle with M50-59 competitor Eric Wylde, the pair finishing the bike ride together and running identical times for the 10km run. Turner took third place in the women's field. Although the Olympic distance triathlon drew the most competitors, more than 60 took part in the full variety of triathlon and duathlon options over three distances.
