St John veteran Elizabeth Wilbin.

18 years of service Elizabeth Wilbin began volunteering for St John in 1994 after being made redundant. The Nelson Area Committee needed a secretary and Elizabeth offered to help until she found another job. Working from the Tahunanui Community Centre her role involved general administration and first aid

class bookings.

The role grew and soon Elizabeth was volunteering 40 hours a week. This lead to part time paid employment, which included ambulance administration work when St John took over the ambulance service from Nelson Hospital in April 1995. Continued page 3

Thoughts from the President Excerpts from AGM speech The last twelve months has seen us working hard to maintain our share of members, there has been aggressive marketing by other organisations looking for members.

In the tightening financial times we are seeing a decline in our membership, our Committee is very concerned about this and we have been looking at ways of keeping members interest.

We have a new vibrant Web Site, thanks to our new webmaster, Nigel; the aim is to keep the web site updated with matters of interest so our members will visit it more often.

The bottom line of the balance sheet is on the edge of being in the red, and if our membership is decreasing, there will have to be more cuts made to keep ourselves viable.

To this end we entered into an agreement with The Waimea Weekly to have our Newsletter printed at no cost to us, that is the reason why there was a change in the way our Newsletter is now presented. This exercise is an ongoing one as we work out the best way of presenting the content etc. for the interest of our members. I must mention at this point the dedication of the volunteers who assist with the folding and labeling of the Newsletter.

Without them we would take many days to achieve this, instead of the two or three hours it takes at present.

Recent Changes to the Rates Rebate Scheme According to Government Statistics, 112,000 New Zealanders received a rates rebate last year.

For the rating year beginning 01 July 2012, the maximum rebate will increase from $580 to $590, and the income abatement threshold will increase from $23,240 to $23,650.

These changes reflect the movement in the Consumers Price Index since the Scheme was last adjusted on 01 July 2011.

You can apply for a Rates Rebate if:

• You pay the rates on the address that you live at, and • You were living at the address at the beginning of the rate year (1 July), and • Your name is recorded in the Rating Information Data (RID) as ratepayer Although a ratepayer’s income might exceed the income threshold a rates rebate could still be available, depending on the rates amount and the number of dependants.

Rebates are granted under the Rates Rebate Act 1974 and you must provide income information so your rebate can be worked out.

You can find further information about the Rates Rebate Scheme on the website www.ratesrebates.govt. nz, or by contacting the Department of Internal Affairs Rates Rebate team: telephone (04) 495 9365.

Both Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council have staff available to help with your rates questions and they will be able to advise you of the information that is required for a refund to be given. Do not hesitate to contact staff at your local council they are there to help the rate payers who are paying their wages.

Office News HAVE YOU RENEWED YOUR MEMBERSHIP? … IT IS NOT TOO LATE. The office volunteers are ready and waiting to process your form and issue your new card.

Please fill in the form provided in this Newsletter. (Insert in front of Newsletter) In the office we continue as always over the busy membership renewal time to be extremely busy. This year at the request of a small minority we introduced internet banking for payment of subscriptions. It was something we had to think long and hard about as the expected extra workload processing the internet banking payments would fall on the paid staff. The extra workload has not really eventuated as only 107 members to date have paid online.

Hopefully this will increase over time.

This all having to be done before 10am each morning before the office opened.

Once again my biggest thanks must go to our fantastic volunteers. Pauline Daly and Ann Ross our data entry

ladies. Ann Bell who tackles our filing helped this year by Patsy McFarlane. The newsletter volunteers who come along every quarter to fold the Newsletter, who each quarter seem to get more and more efficient and have now got the newsletter folding down to just over two hours. I must mention Pamela Atkinson our main Newsletter proof reader who dots the “I’s” crosses the “t’s” and makes sure the grammar is correct.

But my biggest thanks is of course for our front line office volunteers who in March, April go from working once a fortnight to weekly, who never complain about the extra work, who are always cheerful, helpful and do not moan that over the busy time that they do not get a cup of tea.

Well done one and all you are much appreciated.

As in past years a very small dedicated band, namely myself, Sue Albrecht and Gordon and Carole Currie have tried to be out and about at events around Nelson/Tasman keeping Grey Power visible and encouraging membership renewals and new members. Sue and I are experts at putting up a gazebo in record time.

At these events we are always well received and are gratified by the positive feedback we get from our members.

This is all unsolicited and is mostly from members who just pop by to say we are doing a great job.

Person List available … this is a list of retired Grey Power members who do odd jobs for our members.

If you need a gardener, odd job person, painter, carpenter, electrician to name a few there maybe someone on the list who can help. (Price to be negotiated between both parties).

The number of members who attended our AGM was disappointing. Talking with other Organisations and Community Groups operating around the district there appears to be a real lack of interest in getting involved in voluntary work and certainly in attending meetings. The AGM was held at Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village in the spectacular Atrium. A very big thanks to Debbie Edwards and team for the free use of this facility, plus the excellent afternoon tea provided.

Finally a big big thanks to Tony at SBL Travel for allowing lovely volunteer Peg Salton and her sidekick, hubby Don, to use the Travel Centre Office one Saturday for membership renewals. The Richmond Mall Management who let our volunteers sit in the Mall collecting memberships. And of course to the always obliging Simon and his team at the Richmond Mall Pharmacy who continue to support Nelson Grey Power by allowing members to drop off their membership payments in store.

Beach Accessible chairs now available

Nelson Office has been successful in its funding request for two Beach Accessible chairs.

It all came about because for the first time in a great many years I tried to go with my family to Tahunanui beach.

I have avoided such joys as it is always so difficult to get down onto the beach in my wheelchair, let alone get into the water, but my family wasn’t having a bar of it.

There was much discussion about how to get me into the water, with waiting until high tide and throwing me off the side of Rocks Road as an option, I managed to dissuade them about doing this but I couldn’t get out of going for a swim with them at the beach and so with great difficulty my husband dragged me in the wheelchair across the soft sand and then carried me into the water.

The whole time was treated with much hilarity but I was concerned about the strain that my husband was under trying to get me doing exactly what I should be able to do with the family.

I made mention of this situation to a colleague on the Access for All forum, that I am a member of, and she said we should raise beach access as an issue at the next meeting. This was duly done and a lot of suggestions of places to search out appropriate equipment and funding opportunities were discussed.

On contact with our Christchurch office they alerted me to the fact that they had such a chair that was available for people/family’s with disabilities to have good access to their local beaches.

I asked that it be sent to me so I could showcase it here

We applied to a couple of local trusts and to the Tasman District Council’s community funding and were successful to get enough funding for two chairs Nelson is best known for it wonderful beaches, Skifield and pools, these chairs can be used for all three so it has all year round usability.

They are very easy to assemble and come in their own carry bag. They should fit into the boot of most vehicles. We advise that two people lift the chair into and out of the vehicle or maybe one very fit person. One of the chairs comes with a sunshade. We lend these chairs out at no cost to people in the community.

They can be taken into the water and we ask that they be washed down, removing any salt water or chlorine before restoring into the carry bag.

As previously mention these chairs can be used at the pool, beach and on the Skifield.

The big rubber tyres are semi buoyant. This helps when dropping into a pool. The chairs come with a safety belt to help stabilise the person.

These chairs are available in Nelson for use throughout the region. Please contact the Nelson office of CCS Disability Action on 03 548 4479 for availability for your next family outing.

My life in Road Policing Enforcement

By Eric Davy I was the MOT front person for the TV program in 1984 for “Young Driver Of The Year” I had to make the scene of an accident realistic. To do this on the gravel road required skid marks in the gravel to the rear of a truck. As you will appreciate it would be unwise to race down the road and skid into the back of the truck so I had to do it the other way.

Did not know that the TV crew decided to film my little scene setting. The finished result was pretty accurate and graphic.

One of the perks of the job is the ability to do things that are otherwise impossible. In 1985 5 Californian Highway Patrol Motorcyclists were brought to New Zealand by Air New Zealand. They were loaned m/cycles and then toured New Zealand. To cut a long story short, the only school that this group actually visited was my children’s primary school at East Taieri. These men were led by MOT staff in all built up areas so they agreed to follow me to the school.

Security and also conducted similar training to Freight Companies. One was TRANSPAC in Invercargill.

This was a publicity stunt. I was heavily involved in all aspects of training delivery.

Once I became Sergeant I was a field driver trainer for Traffic Officers. (Some would say a legalised boy racer). In 1987 I was promoted to Senior Sergeant Nelson and I moved my family to take up the position.

During the next phase of my career I was the operational senior sergeant for the Nelson Traffic District.

The upshot of this is that I could never send that Traffic Officer South again.

Three times he had to be towed back. We bought the car he hit on this occasion and then gave it back to the owner. In 1989 we assisted with the Telethon. I organised the necessary permits and ensured I had enough staff to make the following happen.

This unit was the equivalent of 3 full “B’ train units. Total length was 82 meters. This traveled from Talbot St, Richmond to Haven Rd. Without a mishap.

In 1992 the integration between the Police and Traffic Safety Service occurred and we decided that the event had to be marked. This was a publicity photo to advise the

public. The 30th June at 12 noon all available MOT and Police vehicles made a convoy through Trafalgar St, Nelson. I became the District Support Officer for the District Commander of Police assuming a number of roles, Driver Trainer, Computer Trainer, I & T Person, Fleet Manager, Planning Officer, Media Liaison, Emergency Management Co-ordinator to name a few. Example showing the spikes used to stop fleeing vehicles.

I also organised and put the first big Booze Bus on the road.

This bus is still going and is now in Fiji.

Important notice for Monitored Alarms

Changed process for monitored medical alarms paid through Disability Allowance

The Ministry of Social Development has introduced a new accreditation process for suppliers of medical alarms to the over 53,000 clients who have the cost of their monitored medical alarm paid through the Disability Allowance.

What are the changes? · The cost of providing monitored medical alarm services paid through the Disability Allowance has gone down. · Medical alarm suppliers have new high quality service standards to meet. · From 1 March 2012 only companies which have met the new standards and provide value for money are allowed to be ‘accredited’ medical alarm suppliers.

What are the benefits of having a medical alarm with an accredited medical alarm supplier? When will these changes happen? The cost of having a monitored medical alarm will decrease from 25 April 2012. If there is a change to a client’s Disability Allowance as a result of this cost reduction, this will show up in their payments from the week beginning 21 May 2012.

Who are the accredited medical alarm suppliers?

The nine medical alarm suppliers are: · ADT Armourguard (incorporating Signature Security) · Bupa Care Services Ltd · Chubb Medical · Freedom

Medical Alarms · Kiwi Concern (NZ) Ltd · Safe Link Ltd · Senior Care Ltd · St John · Tunstall LifeCare.

What does this mean for clients? Clients who are currently with a current accredited supplier have already received information about the changes from their supplier and us.

Clients who have a contract with a current non-accredited supplier can stay with their existing supplier and still get medical alarm costs paid under their Disability Allowance for as long as their contract runs. These clients will be encouraged to change to one of the accredited medical alarm suppliers.

All new clients must be with an accredited company, unless exceptional circumstances exist, if they wish to apply to have their monitored medical alarms paid through DA. The eligibility criteria for getting monitored medical alarms paid under Disability Allowance has not changed.

Wed 12 Sept – Wairau Valley Tavern and Jeymar Soap & Body - $40 (includes lunch) We thought it about time again to do this enjoyable loop which circumnavigates the Mount Richmond Forest Park. We’ll make our way out of Nelson towards Marlborough once again with our customary stop for morning tea before continuing to Renwick where we’ll turn off inland.

How the asset threshold is used in assessment for the Residential Care Subsidy What is the asset threshold?

The asset threshold is a key factor in working out how much older people contribute to the cost of their long-term residential care. The asset threshold is set at a new level on 1 July every year. If the person’s assets are equal to or below that level then they qualify for government funding through the Residential Care Subsidy to meet the cost of their care in a rest home or continuing care hospital.

What is changing? From 1 July 2012 the asset threshold that is used in a person’s assessment for the Residential Care Subsidy will increase by the consumers price index (CPI) every year, instead of by $10,000 per year.

What is not changing?

There is no change to the residential loans scheme. People, whose assets are over the applicable threshold, primarily because they own their former home, may be eligible for an interest-free residential care loan if they meet the criteria. From 1 July 2012, the asset threshold will increase from $210,000 to $213,297 for single people or a couple where both are in care.

For a couple where only one is in long term care, they can choose either: the asset threshold of $213,297 (the 1 July 2012 threshold) or the alternative asset threshold of $116,806 (the 1 July 2012 threshold) where the family home, car and a pre-paid funeral of up to $10,000 are exempt assets.

After 1 July 2012, the threshold will increase by the CPI on 1 July each year.

What is the consumers price index?

The consumers price index (CPI) is a measure of inflation based on the rate of price change of goods and services purchased by households. You can find out more at: www.stats.govt. nz/browse_for_stats/economic_indicators/CPI_inflation.aspx What the change means for you?

If you have already been assessed as eligible for the Residential Care Subsidy prior to 1 July 2012 this change does not affect you.

If you have been assessed as having assets with a value above the cur-

rent threshold, you will be affected by this change. It may take longer for the value of your assets to reduce to the threshold and for you to become eligible for the Residential Care Subsidy.

What happens if a person’s assets are worth more than the asset threshold?

If a person’s total assets are worth more than the asset threshold, they will have to pay the maximum contribution towards the cost of their care until their total assets reduce to the threshold. People whose assets are over the asset threshold, primarily because they still own their former home but no longer live there, may apply for a residential care loan.

What happens if I apply before 1 July 2012?

If you have been needs assessed as requiring residential care and apply before 1 July 2012 your assets will be assessed using the current threshold ($210,000 for a single person or $115,000 for a couple). If you apply after 1 July 2012, the new CPI-adjusted threshold will be used. My assets are not worth as much as they used to be.

Can I be reassessed?

Yes. If you have previously been declined a subsidy due to the value of your assets, you can apply for reassessment. Please contact the contact the Residential Subsidy Unit free helpline 0800 999 727.

GREEN Thing The GREEN

Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the older woman that she should bring her own shopping bags because plastic bags were not good for the environment.

The woman apologized and explained, “We did not have this green thing back in my earlier days”.

The cashier responded, “That’s our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations”.

She was right! Our generation did not have the green thing in its day. Back then, we returned milk bottles, cold drink bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really

were recycled. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor because the blade got dull.

But we didn’t have the green thing back in our day!

We walked up stairs, because we didn’t have an escalator and elevator in every shop and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horespower machine every time we had to go two blocks.

But she was right. We didn’t have the green thing in our day!

Back then, we washed the baby’s nappies because we didn’t have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling

machine burning up 220 volts – wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brandnew clothing.

But that lady is right. We didn’t have the green thing back in our day!

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house – not a TV in every room and the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the county of Yorkshire.

In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn’t have electric machines to do everything for us.

When we packaged a fragile item to send in the post, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not

We used a push mower that ran on human power.

We exercised by working so we didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she’s right. We didn’t have the green thing back then.

We drank from a fountain or a tap when we were thirsty instead of demanding a plastic bottle flown in from another country. We accepted that a lot of food was seasonal and didn’t expect that to be backed up by flying it thousands of air miles around the world.

We actually cooked food that didn’t come out of a

News packet, tin or plastic wrap and we could even wash our own vegetables and chop our own salad.

But we didn’t have the green thing back then!

Back then, people took the tram or a bus, and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their mothers into a 24 hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we did not need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn’t it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn’t have the green thing back then?

Progress on Modernisation Roy Reid, Federation President At its recent meeting the Board agreed, that as a transition to the structure outlined in the modernisation report, which was accepted unanimously by the AGM, the new structure should, for this year, run parallel with the existing committee arrangements. This will ensure continuity of advocacy activity whilst allowing the Board to The Chairs of the new structure committees are:

The Executive Committee have tentatively set up both standing committees and portfolios within the national advisory group to work alongside the present portfolios.

A final decision on the committees full membership is pending.

The Board recognises that to be effective, the implementation of the modernisation report will require involvement from the wider membership. Thus as soon as the terms of reference have been agreed to, expressions of interest will be requested in the quarterly magazine. The preliminary steps in this process are to be completed in the next three months and I will then be in a position to provide you with further information on the changes and the way forward.

We Must Stop This Immediately!

THIS IS HAPPENING RIGHT HERE IN OUR OWN COUNTRY!

Have you noticed that stairs are getting steeper. Groceries are heavier. And, everything is farther away. Yesterday I walked to the corner and I was dumbfounded to discover how long our street had become!

And, you know, people are less considerate now, especially the young ones. They speak in whispers all the time! If you ask them to speak up they just keep repeating themselves, endlessly mouthing the same silent message until they’re red in the face! What do they think I am a lip reader?

I also think they are much younger than I was at the same age. On the other hand, people my own age are so much older than I am. I ran into an old friend the other day and she has aged so much that she didn’t even recognize me.

I got to thinking about the poor dear while I was combing my hair this morning, and in doing so, I glanced at my own reflection. Well, REALLY NOW - even mirrors are not made the way they used to be!

Another thing, everyone drives so fast these days! You’re

risking life and limb if you happen to pull onto the motorway in front of them. All I can say is, their brakes must wear out awfully fast, the way I see them screech and swerve in my rear view mirror.

Clothing manufacturers are less civilized these days. Why else would they suddenly start labelling a size 10 or 12 dress as 18 or 20? Do they think no one notices? The people who make bathroom scales are pulling the same prank. Do they think I actually ‘believe’ the number I see on that dial? HA! I would never let myself weigh that much! Just who do these people think they’re fooling?

I’d like to call up someone in authority to report what’s going on -- but the telephone company is in on the conspiracy too: they’ve printed the phone books in such small type that no one could ever find a number in there!

All I can do is pass along this warning: WE ARE UNDER ATTACK! Unless something drastic happens, pretty soon everyone will have to suffer these awful indignities.

New Zealand diabetes rates There are approximately 200,000 people in New Zealand living with diabetes. Around 10% of these have type1 diabetes, and 90% have type 2 diabetes. Alarmingly, there could be another 100,000 people who have diabetes and don’t know it yet.

Diabetes occurs when there is too much glucose (sugar) in the blood. Over time, this can cause damage to many parts of the body if it is not well controlled.

There are two main types of diabetes: 1. Type 1 diabetes - the pancreas stops producing insulin. Mostly starts in childhood and is not related to body weight. 2. Type 2 diabetes - most common. Main risk factors are being overweight or obese, family history and ethnicity.

Type 2 diabetes is mostly seen in adults, but is now appearing in teenagers as obesity increases. In this type,

the pancreas is not working effectively so insulin becomes defective (called insulin resistance).

Key Points: 1. Diabetes is common and many people do not know they have it. Check with your nurse or doctor about a screening test. 2. 80% of all Type 2 diabetes is preventable if we keep to a healthy body weight, eat healthier foods and keep physically active.

Keep Healthy Over Winter Winter is here again and it is timely that we remind members of points to keep you well and healthy over the colder months.

Flu vaccination Remember these are free to over 65’s and they do work.

Make time to visit the Practice Nurse.

Warmth Remember as you get older you need to keep warm. Invest in some thermals. Layering your clothing is the answer.

Keep arms and legs warm. Try to keep your home warm. I know it is hard over the winter with electricity the price it is, but do the best you can.

Exercise Moderate exercise is great for you wellbeing. Get out in any sun there is. You will feel better and it keeps depression at bay. If you are housebound try to sit in the sun for a few minutes a day.

Hand Washing I know this will seem strange to some, but the flu virus is spread by hand contact. Washing your hands more frequently over these colder months is one of the best ways to avoid colds and flu.

Since our last report the committee has met with both local mayors and our MP Nick Smith.

The 8 point plan to reform local government contains some very important recommendations. Councils should concentrate their efforts on their core responsibilities and NOT embark on activities that are normally carried out by the private sector such as motor races, soccer matches, major shows, and business ventures beyond the core responsibilities of councils. Another major issue is rate increases and the government intends to align increases to inflation plus population growth. The increases signalled in the councils 10 year plans completely ignore this and it seems they are going for broke before their bubble bursts, debt is another item the government intends to tighten up on, but once again our councils have gone for broke and signalled massive increases in debt over the next 10 years. By 2022 the combined debt of the NCC and TDC is projected to be $500 million. The councils reckless disregard for its ratepayers is evident when one realises what it will cost to service such debt. Amalgamation is dead and buried.

We have written a very strong letter to the minister of local government highlighting the projected rate increases and increased debt over the next 10 years and demand he put a stop to these “go for broke� plans before legislation pulling councils in to line, is introduced. We have also asked him to investigate the initial granting of a loan to the Theatre Royal Trust for $1.2 million which is now in default. No repayments have been made on this loan and the Trust has little chance of ever repaying it. If the council decides to accept the theatre as a gift and clear the Trusts debts, so be it, but questions must be asked over the guarantees given when $1.2 million of public monies was originally advanced.

We have also made submissions regarding the Nelson City Councils applications for changes to amplified noise on public reserves etc. The council throughout the notification process has continually stated noise levels will not increase and have made many statements to imply that nothing will change. Unfortunately nothing could be further from the truth. We have opposed both consents on the grounds that misleading information has been given to the public. If you were fully aware of the implications of these applications we are sure there would be a strong backlash from those living near these sites.

This is my last article as Chair of the Local Body Committee. I have tendered my resignation from the executive and I hope there a couple of members (One TDC and one NCC residents) who will join the executive to keep an eye on our two councils.

By Addo Mulders NBUS is the new name for the new and improved local bus services which incorporate services from Nelson to Richmond and return plus local routes in and around the Nelson area.

The services are operated by the SBL Group on behalf of Nelson City Council.

Nelson Grey Power has supported this new initiative from its inception and we hope that it will be used by members.

It is regrettable that the Tasman District Council did not find it appropriate to support this new service financially.

The reason given was that too few Richmond rate payers would benefit from this service.

Grey Power Media Releases from Roy Reid, Federation President Caring Counts Report Grey Power wishes to congratulate the Equal Employment Opportunities Commissioner, Dr Judy McGregor on her comprehensive and well researched report on carers for the aged. Her work in aged care facilities shows her dedication to ensuring the report was as a result of first hand experiences.

Her first recommendation that the minister for older people has a top ten Cabinet ranking is one that Grey Power has advocated for a long time.

Recognition of the importance of the position of carers is well overdue and it is important that they are given the opportunity to obtain Level 2 qualifications and higher. Society must acknowledge that the career of a carer in the aged sector is highly valued and they are an integral part of obtaining a quality of life as we

age. The remuneration they receive must reflect this.

We fully support all 12 recommendations Dr McGregor has made in her report. The onus is now on all groups including ours to ensure that these recommendations are implemented within the time frame she has set out.

Grey Power Applauds Recognition of Mature Women as “Super Achievers” in Workplace Productivity Survey Recognition of the high value of mature women to the work force in the Productivity Pulse Survey on workplace productivity just released by Ernst & Young is welcomed by Grey Power.

The survey of 1220 workers across major industries found that employers estimated that up to 21% of work done was of no value to the business, and workers themselves estimated that about 15% of their time was wasted.

Workers surveyed were split into four groups based on their value to the company.

The Government in particular should face up to this fact, and ensure that the public service is a truly Equal Opportunities Employer and give older New Zealanders a fair go in the State employment process.

From land sales, 15,000 pounds was set aside for establishing a college and in 1847 these funds were transferred to a Board of Trustees. Nelson College began in a Manuka St house in 1856 with eight pupils, the first State secondary school in New Zealand.

Hearty Chowders to keep you warm Ham and Potato Chowder

Curried Kumara and Pumpkin Chowder

Use washed potatoes. If the skins are shiny and smooth, 50 g butter there is no need to peel them.

1 large onion chopped 6 rashers of bacon, 1 Tbsp canola oil 2 bay leaves chopped coarsley 1 each: onion, celery stalk, salt and pepper to taste 1 teaspoon of curry diced 50g butter powder or to taste of mild 500g potatoes, diced 4 Tbsp flour curry powder ) 100g smoky ham, diced 1 1/2 cups milk 1 kg of peeled chopped 2 cups chicken stock Kumara

1 kg of peeled chopped Pumpkin 2 large potatoes peeled & chopped 6 cups of chicken stock 1 cup cream Salt & freshly ground black pepper to taste & parsley

Heat the oil in a heavy saucepan. Saute the onion and celery for 2 minutes.

Add the potatoes, ham, chicken stock and bay leaves and bring to the boil.

Cook on medium heat until tender, about 15 minutes. Season.

In a separate saucepan or

Blend or process the soup in batches until smooth.

Return to the saucepan and add the cream, salt & Freshly ground pepper & parsley. Serve with chunks of crusty bread or wholemeal toast.
