Toxic fire starter off to court Simon Bloomberg The man responsible for lighting a fire that sent a large plume of toxic black smoke over Richmond on Monday is going to court. Fire crews from Richmond and Appleby as well as Tasman District Council environment officers responded to calls about the fire that was lit on a commercial property near Three Brothers Corner around 9am. Although the greenwaste fire had been
permitted, it contained prohibited material including a fibreglass boat which caused a large plume of black smoke to drift over Richmond. Council spokesman Chris Choat says they issued a prosecution notice to the man on Tuesday. Chris says the man will go to court where he faces a maximum penalty for the offence of two years imprisonment or a fine of $300,000. Richmond Volunteer

I’ve always wanted to be a builder, it sort of runs in the family.” Taine says he was doing work experience with a builder through the Gateway programme that runs through Nayland College. “I’ve had that taste through Gateway, but it’s been teasing me because it was
just one day a week and then I’d have to go back to school.” Taine says he was “stoked” when he was given the job. “I think my dad was more happy than me, he had a smile on his face all day. I think it hit me the day after.” Andrew says the quality of applicants was superb. “I was surprised by how many there
