Plans to improve the safety of a dangerous intersection at the entrance to Wakatu Estate in Stoke are being finalised this week and will feature a stop sign, turning lanes and traffic islands to guide traffic flow. Last year, the Nelson City Council implemented a temporary speed reduction outside Wakatu Estate, four months after a series of nasty accidents at the intersection of Main Rd Stoke and Elm St. Council promised that “operational changes and on-the-ground road markings will be undertaken to make the intersection safer” and this week revealed it was meeting with contractors to discuss the planned changes. A council spokesperson says the new layout will include a stop sign at the exit from Elm St and a left-turning lane from Main Rd Stoke into Elm St. There will also be off-on ramps for cyclists to enable them to use the off-road path outside the entrance to Wakatu Estate and new traffic islands to guide traffic flow. FROM PAGE 1 team leader, Senior Sergeant Grant Andrews, who drives past the intersection on his way to work, is relieved the road layout is going to be changed. Grant says the temporary speed reduction is helping to make the intersection safer but the fundamental problem is the layout of the road that is only “designed for lower traffic volumes”. “There are more cars using the road now, especially with Wakatu Estate getting bigger and all the development at Saxton Field. So many people drive down that road and the intersection is not designed to accommodate the extra traffic. “We had another crash there this week. Reducing the speed limit is helping but all it really means is that the impacts are at a slower speed.” Workers in Wakatu Estate are relieved at council’s plans to change the layout, although Gary Walton says it should have happened sooner.
A three-car collision outside Wakatu Estate last year was one of a series of serious accidents that has prompted a change in the road’s layout. “Somebody’s going to get killed there unless they fix it,” Gary, who works at Freeman Roofing, says. “The lower speed limit has done nothing to improve it, the hazard is still there.” Dave Johnson says the only benefit of lowering the speed limit has been to reduce the speed of any collisions. Dave, who works at O2B Healthy, says the only way to improve the safety of the intersection is to change the road layout. Nelson City Council couldn’t put a time-line on the changes until it had discussed the project with contractors, which it was doing this week.

Supreme science project shoots past the stars Brittany Spencer Waimea College student Kendall Shuker wowed judges at this year’s Cawthron Science and Technology Fair and it’s no wonder. Taking home three awards including the John Cross Best Scientific Investigation Award, Kendall’s astronomy project was in a league of its own. The year 10 student had to learn computer code for two years, filter through the galaxy and wrap her brain around a concept that most people wouldn’t know a thing about. Kendall’s project ‘Crazy Quasars’ sought to find out the number of quasars within a data set over the northern hemisphere. To do this, Kendall had to find her way around the Slogan Digital Sky Server (SDSS) and learn different computer languages to retrieve quasar data. “A quasar is when one luminous object that omits light like a galaxy or a star is locked gravitationally with another luminous object and there’s dark matter or energy between them, and they omit what looks to us as one source of light but there is actually two,” says Kendall. “For the past two years I’ve

For Kendall, the passion for

astronomy started young and says she just wants to continue learning more and more. “I’ve been interested in astronomy since I was really young, when I was eight years old my parents gave me my first telescope and ever since then I’ve just been fascinated.” This year’s Cawthron Science and Technology Fair saw over 70 students enter from around the region. “What has been the most outstanding thing for us, is that both the supreme science and technology awards went to year nine and ten students. The other supreme award went to Nelson College for Girls student Eva Lloyd and her project ‘A Handy Solution’.

Internet solves theft within hours Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
When a St John Ambulance donation box was stolen from the counter of Stoke’s Pestell’s Rai Bacon Company last week, worker Rachael Stott decided to turn to social media in an attempt to ‘name and shame’ the thieves. And it worked. Within two hours of sending security camera footage to a popular Facebook page that shares information about crime in Nelson, known as Nelson Snippets, Rachael had the names and addresses of the culprits. The administrator of the Nelson Snippets page says that the response was “phenomenal”, with the post being shared 2.4k times and has reached 168,708 people since Wednesday night. It is just one example of an increasing number of Nelson businesses and individuals turning to social media to take the law into their own hands for fast, effective results. However, Nelson Police, who were alerted to the theft the same day and have now been passed on the names revealed through the page, are advising people to exercise caution when appealing for

But Nelson Snippets, who have 13.5k followers on their page, say their success rate in solving local crimes is “very high” and that the police have “dropped the ball.” “Social media gets results, and it is growing up,” they told Waimea Weekly. “If people know they are likely to end up on here and be identified, hopefully they will think twice.” While Pestell’s say that, although they won’t get the money back, they have had some very generous customers giving them donations to replenish the box. “One lady has given us a $20 donation to start filling the box back up, as she saw what had happened through the Nelson Snippets post,” says Rachael. “I’m just amazed at the outreach it’s had - people seem to get more accomplished through social media, now I just hope the cops take it seriously.” Pestell’s owner, Chris Pestell, says he is “gobsmacked” with the result. “It’s caused quite a little buzz around the place,” he says. “Nearly every customer has asked us – ‘have you got your box back yet?’ – which just shows how many people the Facebook post reached. Social media is a pretty powerful thing.”

ISEL IN BLOOM: Simon Brealey, left, Tayla Bovey-Smith and Molly Martin, promote their locally written pantomime, Buzz, at the annual Isel in Bloom event on Sunday. The event is all about celebrating the gardens and blossoms that make Isel Park a stunning place to visit in the spring, as well as marking the start of the historic house’s summer season. Isel in Bloom is organised by the Nelson City Council and this year they were taking a more historic approach to the event, holding talks throughout the day including The Marsden’s of Isel, Historic trees of Isel Park and Flowers and Seasons of Isel. The event also featured food, craft and plant stalls, and local entertainment from the City of Nelson Highland Pipe Band, Kieran O’Connor, Nelson City Brass and Ragged Crow Morris Dancers. Photo: Jessie Johnston.
Simon Bloomberg The Richmond police station will continue to be closed intermittently until a safe new front counter, which will be rolled out across the country, has been developed. Richmond is one of 105 police stations identified as a risk to staff during a nationwide review of station security conducted last year. That means the station can only be open to the public when there is a constabulary staff member available to man the counter resulting in “intermittent closures”. “We are usually only closed for an hour and at the most it’s been three hours,” Nelson Bays police area commander Mat Arnold-Kelly says. “Unfortunately, it’s not always possible to have someone in the station because our staff are out on the streets and on the roads doing Nelson Bays prevention.” area commandMat says many of the er Mat Arnoldpublic’s inquiries can be Kelly. handled over the phone and people should phone the Nelson station if Richmond is closed. People can also phone the Richmond station beforehand to make an appointment to ensure it will be open. Mat says he hasn’t been informed when the station’s security will be upgraded although police are trialling “a new, innovative front counter design” that will be implemented throughout the country’s insecure stations. “They can’t put a time frame on it but it is moving along. We do apologise to the public for any inconvenience but the safety of our staff is paramount.”

Harbourmasters host regatta Nelson’s water-based clubs came together on Saturday for the Harbourmasters Regatta, a day of challenges, camaraderie and spectacular weather. The harbourmasters were joined by the Iron Duke Sea Scouts, Nelson Rowing Club, the Whakatu Marae Waka Ama, Maitahi Outrigger Canoe Club and the Tasman Bay Kayak Racing Club, for several races in the inaugural regatta. Pride was on the line as the final event pitted the Tasman District Council and Tasman Harbourmaster against Nelson City Coun-
cil and Nelson Harbourmasters. In a questionable last minute course redirection by Nelson Harbourmaster Dave Duncan, he took line honours. Best individual went to kayaker Lisa Morrison, best group went to the Iron Duke Sea Scouts and the Broken Oar was awarded to Tasman Harbourmaster Dan Cairney for bringing up the rear multiple times. Lisa, who won best individual, said she'll be back next year. “It’s so cool to see all the clubs come together, the races were really fun and intense."

Funding runs out for neighbourhood support, Wednesday, October 12: Neighbourhood Support Waimea co-ordinator Marty Price has been recognised with a Neighbourhood Support New Zealand Award for his efforts in the community. It was a bright note in a tough time for the group as Marty takes indefinite leave without pay after a change in the way Government funds are dished out meant the group could no longer pay him. Marty says there was a lump in the throat when he received the surprise honour at a meeting of the group on Saturday. The number of street groups has grown from 28 to 145 since Marty started in 2012. The group remain hopeful that the role will be active again in the near future.

Trespassing riders told to own up, Wednesday, October 12: After asking riders who had trespassed into logging activity on private forestry land to own up, Nelson Moutainbike Club initially received a response from around 90 per cent of the riders. Nelson Mountainbike Club says that they are now confident that the remaining riders have owned up, although the forestry company is still making sure all are accounted for, the riders only receiving a fourweek ban.

Port gets behind shoebox gifts Andrew Board A thousand shoeboxes filled with Christmas treats by Nelsonians will be shipped to needy Pacific Island communities over the next month, and one of the region’s largest businesses is right behind it. The project is run by international charity Samaritan’s Purse and sees people all over the world fill an empty shoebox with items ranging from clothes to toys, school equipment, a hairbrush and “something special” before they are delivered to children in need for Christmas. This is the second year running that Port Nelson has taken part in the effort by encouraging its staff to fill a shoebox. Port Nelson’s Andy Farmer says he first heard of the charity through his child’s preschool in Richmond. He took it to management at Port Nelson who agreed to pay the $9 shipping charge for each box filled by a Port Nelson staff member. Last year 55 boxes came back, this year it’s 90. “I’m rapt, I think a lot more people
were aware of what it was this year so we had a really good number of people take it up. I think people like that it’s easy to do, tangible and that it goes to kids,” he says. The programme is run in Nelson through the Richmond Baptist Church. Its children’s pastor Wendy Milson says Port Nelson is by far the largest single supplier of full boxes. She expects between 900 and 1000 boxes to come from the Nelson and Tasman area. “The big push is to give these children something to hang on to and to treasure. You see the videos and the smiles on their faces and they’re so delighted to get something that’s actually theirs. Because some of them have nothing, they are allocated so it isn’t a free-for-all.” She says the filled shoeboxes from Nelson have been handed out in Fiji over the past two years. There’s still time to fill in a shoebox of your own, shoeboxes can be picked up and dropped off at Richmond Baptist Church on Salisbury Rd.

No.3 is the London Dry Gin distilled to a proprietary recipe of Berry Bros. & Rudd, London’s oldest wine and spirit merchant. The name No.3 refers to the address in St James’s Street, London: their home since 1698 No.3 was created to be the last word in gin for a Dry Martini. With juniper at its heart, it unashamedly celebrates the integrity and character of traditional London Dry Gin: six perfectly balanced botanicals distilled in traditional copper pot stills.

Welcome cloak needs work: Will this be covered by warranty from the "artist" or be another cost on the ratepayer? Ash Wells. And how much more is to be added to the $51k purchase price for this? And does this money come from Parks and Reserves, which is in turn funded by the Marina users, who have no
say like the ratepayers on where the money is spent? Dianne Couch. I love the sculpture, but only like paying for something once. Jackie Blanchet. Rates shouldn't be used for crap like this. It's ugly, like the rusty pipe in Washing-
ton Valley. Let artists donate stuff and find people with a better idea of what's nice and where it goes than the people making the current decisions. Rowan Kerr. It's awesome - I thought Nelson people were artycrafty and famous for it. Guess not. It's going to stay, so pleased for that. Lynette J Eden.

Lewis Stanton: This guy is a blight and uses the NCC as his platform to make a living by scamming those who are stupid enough to sympathise with him. I also detest his use of the Maori warrior's name, Hone. He never bleated to his people, he got out and did it with honour. And if he were a Maori I’m sure he would have been in jail after the first order to move on was disputed. I have three suggestions for him. No 1: Leave the people of Nelson alone, there’s plenty of room at the Beehives’ foyer. No 2: get a haircut and No 3: get a job. Harley Nathan, Te Taou, Tahunanui. He will challenge any by-law and will probably win. Sharon Fenemor. The council can easily ban alcohol and skateboards from CBD footpaths, so why is it so hard to ban one hobo? Also, he doesn't want a simple apology he wants to drag this out as much as possible and make himself a martyr. If he really does want a solution as he claims, he needs to meet somewhere in the middle. This has already been offered to him a long time ago, so it's time to get tough. Christian Galbraith. Come on NCC, show us some spine. You have been a pushover when it comes to Hone. The community has had enough of this mess. It is time to reclaim the control of our city. Yvonne Canares. Kinda sick of hearing about this useless, bludging p&^%$. When is this council going to stop talking and actually get off their arses and actually do something? Flower man recognised Jessie Johnston
Bruce Haycock with some of the Prezzy cards he won after being crowned October’s good sort in a nationwide competition open to pharmacies. Photo: Jessie Johnston.
Unprecedented rural and lifestyle property sales has created a queue of buyers!
Bruce Haycock sure knows how to put a smile on a lady’s face and it’s his gentlemanly pastime of handing out flowers that’s recently seen him acknowledged as a good sort. Bruce, who’ll be 91 next month, lives in the Ernest Rutherford retirement complex and has permission from staff to pick any flowers he wishes. After they’re gathered and neatly arranged, Bruce takes four or five bunches into Richmond, once or twice a week at least, where he hand-delivers them to stores and individuals, all with the aim of brightening up their day. While some are gifted on impulse, Bruce’s favourites include Unichem, Health 2000, Hardy’s and Silvermoon. Unichem decided to get Bruce’s generosity noticed outside the Richmond shops he visits and entered him into a nationwide pharmaceutical good sort competition,
run by Maxigesic. “When we saw it, we just knew that Bruce was the right person to nominate,” says Unichem staff member, Ashleigh Kenning. “He visits us at least once a week and without fail comes in with his trolley filled with beautiful flowers and drops in a bunch. He makes our day every time he comes in and he’s been doing that for a long time.” Open to all pharmacies in the country, Bruce was named the good sort for October, receiving the accompanying prize of $200 worth of Prezzy cards. At the retirement home, Bruce’s walker is also adorned with several fake flowers, lights and musical toys that he uses to entertain the grandchildren of residents when they come to visit. “I wasn’t expecting it that’s for sure,” says Bruce. With a meal at the Turf Hotel already planned, Bruce says the suggestions for how he can use the cards are already rolling in.

Power outage still a mystery
Network Tasman is continuing to test its 33,000 volt network to try and find the cause of a widespread power outage that affected about 5300 customers on Friday. Power was lost to substations at Hope and Brightwater at about 1.30pm affecting customers in Wakefield, Brightwater, Richmond, Aniseed Valley, Waimea Plains, Appleby Highway and Lansdowne Rd. Network Tasman restored power to 3000 customers in Wakefield and Brightwater by 2:15pm with the rest of the affected customers being restored by 3:30pm by re-routing the power around the fault. Although the 33,000 volt network has been relivened, Network Tasman is still testing the line to determine the cause of the fault which was “fleeting” and possibly caused by a faulty insulator or a piece of wind-blown debris landing on a conductor.

Harpists tuning-up for concert Simon Bloomberg A small, dedicated group of musicians are learning the art of playing one of the world’s most ancient and romantic musical instruments and they will be showcasing their talents in two concerts later this year. The Harmonie Harp School was formed by Annemieke Harmonie when she moved to Nelson about five years ago. Annemieke learned to play the harp as a nine-yearold in Holland and, after emigrating to New Zealand, decided to set up the school after playing and teaching the harp around the world. “I learned to play the harp when I was young in Holland and then I travelled around Europe and the world with it in my backpack,” Annemieke says. “Whenever I ran out of food or money, I’d get my harp out and busk on the streets.” Annemieke says the school has new harpists, including her daughters Aster and
Harmonie Harp Orchestra players, from front to rear, Lisa Harmonie, Janice Sumner, Ruby Harrison, Ariane Turton, Stephen Eagar, Aster Harmonie and Annemieke Harmonie are rehearsing for two concerts later in the year. Photo: Simon Bloomberg Lisa, and “a lot of harpists who have come out of the woodwork” since the school opened. The concert will feature a wide variety of traditional harp musical styles as well as modern music including Christmas songs.
“It’s a very ancient instrument so all the different cultures have evolved their own different styles of harp and harp music over the centuries. It’s also one of the hardest instruments to play - it’s like learning to play a standup piano.”
The Harmonie Harp Orchestra has already started rehearsing for the concerts which will be held at the Victory Hall in Nelson starting at 3pm on November 3 and the Richmond Town Hall at 3pm on December 4. Entry by gold coin donation.

Expo 'fantastic opportunity' for artists Simon Bloomberg
Richmond artist Kylie Conning can claim to be unique among the 150 artists exhibiting their work at Art Expo Nelson at Saxton Stadium this weekend. And it's not just because Kylie's favoured media are the everyday ballpoint pen and ink. The thing that makes her really different is that she creates many of her edgy art works sitting in the front seat of the taxi she drives for her day job as she dreams of becoming a full-time artist. "I drive a taxi so I started drawing with ballpoint to fill in time while I was waiting for my next passenger," Kylie says. "Then I did an art class at Impressions and that really inspired me and got me right

"I always have a clipboard and "I love faces so I mostly do porpen and paper in my taxi and I traits. I draw birds and other anistill do a lot sitting in the front mals too but that's just come out seat. I've also started drawing at of experimenting."
Kylie, who has only been drawing for three years, had her first exhibition at Art Expo Nelson last year. She sold four works there and says she got a lot of good feedback from other artists and visitors to the Expo. "It's a fantastic opportunity to talk to the other artists. There was a really good vibe about it and the diversity of the work was inspirational." She also exhibits her work on social media and received a pleasant surprise when famous musician Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics tweeted that he liked Kylie's portraits of Janis Joplin and Stevie Nicks. "He didn't buy them but I got quite a bit of work from that," Kylie ridget says. "I'm a bit

of a music buff so I do lots of popart portraits." Kylie says she will be exhibiting about six of her drawings at this year's Expo which has attracted artists from all over the country. Organiser Nic Foster says more than 5500 people attended last year's Expo and 590 pieces of art were sold. He says "the scenery keeps changing" because sold works are immediately replaced by new ones "which is ideal for art lovers who like to buy a weekend pass". The Expo will be open to the public from 10am every day over Labour Weekend.

Joy and Bill are loving the life at their Summerset retirement village. They’re very involved in the village community, with a great crowd attending their golden wedding anniversary celebration there last year. Their home is often filled with family when they’re not flat out enjoying village activities with friends, including the very popular Wine Appreciation Group. Village life suits them down to the ground, and as Bill says, “The added advantage is that you have a support crew if something goes wrong, and that to me is reassuring.”

From the presidents pen It was wonderful to see a great turnout of members enjoying our club’s hospitality and camaraderie on Thursday evening. Special thanks to Wayne, Ivan and Kevin for the little touches which added to the atmosphere. As the summer evenings stretch out we look forward to Lewis Della Bosca more of the same. From this week, in addition to being available at the office, executive and (sports) section meeting draft minutes will be emailed to all members. More and more we will be using email to communicate directly with members - make sure we have your correct address. The executive will be seeking your views and input on many issues and ideas we go forward together. Many interests, one club - CLUB WAIMEA.
Men in Accord Men in Accord, although a smaller chorus group, did well to bring home silver medals in the Small Chorus category at the convention in September. Men in Accord has just returned from representing the Nelson/ Tasman region at the National NZ Barbershop Convention which was
A few words from the manager I arrived down in sunny Richmond on September 14, 2016, moving here from Mangawhai Heads in the winterless North (just south of Whangarei) where I have been the manager of the Mangawhai Club for the last nine years. Mangawhai is home to 1650 members but I was attracted to Club Waimea as I feel that you have great facilities and the way is clear for us to grow and have a lot of fun in the future. Previous to becoming involved in club management, I worked in the International Freight Forwarding scene at Auckland Airport for some 30 years, in the finance area. From there I moved to Mangawhai, firstly to be the local Herald delivery man before a stint of catering at the Mangawhai Golf
Club, which I found to be fantastic. However, the lure of looking after the books for a fledgling club, the opportunity to interact with the existing members and attract new members was too much to turn down and the club grew from 250 to 1650 members during my nine-year stint. I sincerely hope that by introducing some new ideas and bringing a positive attitude to my new position that we can also experience growth and most of all have some fun. It is with the support and assistance of the current members that we can move forward in an optimistic manner, so I look forward to continually meeting members. I am always approachable and as such, sometimes to the detriment of my brownie point situation, spend time at the end of the day and in the weekends for this purpose. Come along everyone, bring your friends, introduce new members, together let’s get Club Waimea humming. - Cheers Wayne
held at the new ASB Theatre in Blenheim. Under the musical direction of Andy Rolfe, the chorus was proud to come away with silver medals in the Small Chorus category. Andy has done a fantastic job being both firm and patient during their rehearsals to get the songs up to competition standard. Along with some much appreciated additional coaching and guidance from Celia Rodley, they were able to fine tune the songs to give them that little ‘extra something’ to help make them stand out from the other competitors. Attaining silver medals was quite an achievement as MiA were the smallest chorus competing with only 11 guys singing on the risers. Their score even beat one of the other larger choruses of twice as many singers. Being at the convention was also an amazing opportunity to hear the very best choruses in the country with the 2016 World Champion Quartet “Forefront”, coming all the way from the USA as headlining guests for the weekend. Men in Accord also had success with the quartet representing them at the convention.

They go under the name of The Hemispheres. The group brought home the Iraia Te Whaiti trophy for the “Most Entertaining Quartet” as voted for by the audience. It was the first time the chorus’s quartet had entered the competition, competing against 19 other quartets and winning that section was a great achievement for them. Winning the silver medal has been a huge boost for Men in Accord and they’re now looking to swell their numbers by recruiting new members. To all you guys out there who can hold a tune, if you’re looking for something different to do on a Tuesday evening, they encourage you to come along and try the experience for yourselves. For further information about Men in Accord, please feel free to pop in and see them at Club Waimea during Tuesday night rehearsals from 7:15pm or alternatively, visit their website at: men-in-accord.nz or call Dave on 540 2178. For over 10 years, Nigel and Christine Sutton, along with their dedicated team, have been the specialists in the supply of quality garden and landscape products. Stoke Garden & Landscapes has a huge range of hard and soft landscaping products from pavers to garden beds, including 46 bins which stock everything such as stones, driveway chip, construction aggregate, sand, soil, compost, bark chip and more. All of their products are available in multiple sizes, whether you’re gardening a small residential backyard, you’re undertaking an extensive landscaping project on your property or you’re a landscaping business requiring the best products to satisfy your customers. Stoke Garden & Landscapes can supply their products by the scoop, in bags or through bulk deliveries. They can even deliver in small quantities, although a delivery fee does apply. Nigel, Christine and the team have proudly looked after the whole region with their specialist products and advice, from Atawhai, Nelson and Stoke, to Richmond and further afield. Located on Saxton Rd, the business is open seven days a week, allowing landscapers and home gardeners the chance to maximise their weekend. The friendly team are always willing to assist in any way they can and have a fantastic display area for those who need a boost of inspiration, plus, courtesy trailers are available alongside their delivery service to help you get your purchases home. Nigel and Christine also own Sand & Land on Pascoe St and after eight years in business, have decided to close down, opting to merge the landscape supply business with Stoke Garden & Landscapes. This move will allow the team to provide a comprehensive service to all their customers from bricks and pavers to shingle, sleepers, punga logs, pea straw and feature rocks. While most of the business will relocate to the Saxton Rd premises, Kirsty will be taking over the trellis side as her own business. That means you can still receive custom-made trellis, as well as standard sheets, through Stoke Garden & Landscapes, as well as other local outlets. Sand & Land’s last day will be Labour Day, Monday, October 24, where Nigel, Christine and the team will be providing all the popular lines up until they relocate. Stoke Garden & Landscapes combined with Sand & Land is your one-stop shop for specialist garden and landscaping supplies, as well as sound advice and inspiration from their friendly team.

including pets, dispensing a mist every few minutes. Its effectiveness is down to the science behind the product. The dispenser releases droplets that are small enough to stay in the air, then the airflow through your home allows the mist to spread to all areas, controlling pests no matter where they are. The natural pyrethrins breakdown in sunlight so there is no residue left around your home. Alternately, the dispenser can be filled with an odour neutraliser, Ecomist supplying a number of different fragrances to choose from. For more information on Ecomist, visit the website at www.ecomist. co.nz or phone 0800 757578. The team at Fertilizer NZ know that we love eating our own tomatoes, especially around Christmas time when they tend to be expensive, and if we are lucky enough, we have some ready for the Christmas holidays. Their Spring Vege mix provides excellent results and is sure to give your tomatoes, and other vegetable crops, the best possible start. It is filled with all the right nutrients required to grow a healthy crop at a price you can afford. To understand how to grow good tomatoes, as well as the other crops your want to enjoy over summer, you need to know what type of fertiliser is required, and
most importantly why they need the different elements – Nitrogen to ensure good leaf growth and a healthy start; Phosphorus to promote good flowering, leading to good fruiting; Potassium to help fruit formation and ripening; Magnesium to aid germination and development and Sulphur to aid production of vitamins, amino acids and enzymes. Sound a bit confusing? Don’t worry – the experts at Fertilizer NZ have blended exactly the right ratios that you can buy ready to use. Call in and pick some up today to ensure a crop that is ‘blooming unbelievable’!

Tigers lie in wait Jody Scott Blair Cunningham has forged a reputation as the Tigers' chief enforcer and will be one to watch as the Nelson speedway season progresses. The 46n Tank is one of the most recognisable Super Stocks in the country and always immaculately presented at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway. The speedway season got underway on Saturday night with the Trackman Trophy event. Keightley Teece earned maximum points in two of the three stockcar heats to take home the trophy in that class. Jeremy Webb won the TQ midgets final after being a pace-setter all night. Ian Burson took home the Trackman Trophy in the super saloon and earned the John Pomeroy Trophy for the night’s best performance after going under the official lap record. Hamish Carter won the youth class while Neville Soper was victorious in the street stock class, Brett Nicholls proved his consistency to win the superstock Trackman Trophy. Blair’s opportunity will come later in the season. He has taken some huge hits, putting body and car on the line to help out team mates when called upon, singlehandedly changing the outcome of a

form for others to achieve. This was the case last year at 'The Battle of the Stocks'. Blair’s consistency in finishing races and gaining good points with meeting partner Peter Bengston, won them the very tall “Battle” trophy. The 27-year-old logging hauler operator is taking it a bit easier this year, having recently purchased a house he is looking at selling the car, but will continue to race until sold. The next meeting will be held on Saturday, October 29 which is the Coca Cola Fireworks Night. The meeting will see the midget cars and production saloons making their first appearance of the season.

Waimea College honours top athletes Simon Bloomberg Swimmers, adventure racers, volleyballers, softballers and cyclists were the stars of another highachieving year of sport at Waimea College that produced a steady stream of national titles and representatives. Those five sports accounted for 25 of the 30 athletes who received ceremonial caps at the school’s annual sports prize-giving last Friday. The capped athletes, including swimmer Caitlin Delany who received the Glue Family Cup for the Greatest Achievement in Sport, had either competed for national teams or won national titles. Waimea’s director of sport Daniel Hobbs says he is delighted with the high number of new caps which “is direct reflection of all the hard work the students and their coaches put into their sports”. “There is a whole lot of good
work being done out in the community that was recognised at our awards. Look at Josh Kelly, he only played in one tournament for the school and the rest of it was up to his club coaches. “There’s also heaps of good stuff going on in the school. We have the national men’s volleyball coach (Colin Redpath) coaching the boys team and Ed Book taking the girls basketball so you can’t get any better than that. “We also have Dayna (Whiting) and Josh (Ovsenek) coaching the girls volleyball and the multisport teams are mentored and coached by Marcus Swain and Jane Orbell who are both super-keen. We are very lucky to have all those people working in the school - their impact is huge.” Daniel is also pleased that Waimea continues to excel in a wide range of sports with the top boys and girls individual awards going to athletes involved in seven different sports. The Girls
Nelson and Tasman. The awards were won by Amiee Book (basketball), Matt Heyward (beach volleyball), Bridie Edwards (cross-country), Shania Kuipers (hockey), Livy Guyton (shooting), Scott Green (shooting), Josh Kelly (softball), Sam McKenzie (swimming), Maddie Mitchell (triathlon), Tane MacDonald (volleyball) and the Get2Go Adventure Racing team (Team of the Year). Makos to renew Taranaki rivalry for rugby playoffs Jacob Page The Tasman Makos booked a semi-final spot in the Mitre 10 Cup against Taranaki this weekend after making mustwin rugby look easy with a 56-0 thumping of Southland on Sunday. Leon MacDonald’s team will travel to New Plymouth for the match after finishing third in the regular season. The way they finished, with an eight-try romp in the sunshine at Nelson’s Trafalgar Park, will
give them plenty of confidence. After Counties Manukau defeated front-runners Canterbury, the Makos had to win against the men from the deep south, but when loose forward Pete Samu crossed for an early try built on forward domination, there was little doubt as to which team was going to win. The victory also continues Tasman’s rise in the provincial ranks. Three years in the top flight for a final’s appearance and two

semi-final efforts. Tasman lost the 2014 final to Taranaki but got the better of the amber and blacks when they played in Nelson earlier this season. Tasman and Taranaki will meet on Sunday with kick off at 4.35pm. The winner will face either Canterbury or Counties Manukau, who meet in Christchurch. Tasman could earn a home final if Counties beat the Ranfurly Shield holders.

New WOB director of rugby keen to make mark Jacob Page Jono Phillips may not have moved to Nelson for a rugby role but he found an offer from Waimea Old Boys too good to refuse. Jono moved down from Taranaki earlier this year to be with his partner and helped coach the Marist seniors after arriving midway through the season but has decided to take up the role of director of rugby at Waimea Old Boys. He ran an academy programme
which saw three women players win Sevens silver medals at the Rio Olympics. Jono spent 10 years in Scottish rugby heading up their academy and working with several of their national teams. He then returned to New Zealand and did eight years at the Hurricanes as an assistant coach and High Performance Director and then a short two-year stint with Taranaki before moving to Nelson in February, where his partner is lives.
“I was looking for a role to get into the community and did the role with Marist and that gave me the hunger again. “I got chatting to Wayne [Oldham] and [Waimea] was keen to move their club forward and moving to a new town it’s always good to get involved.” Jono is keen to provide more support for coaches at all levels. “I want to be a bit more individualised with what coaches learn, put a Waimea slant on it.” Jono is already running Mon-
day night trainings for players to learn about decision-making processes in game situations. “I want anyone who wants to learn the game of rugby to be here.” Jono wants players and coaches to have a better understanding of the game so that the standard of the game improves. “The club has some really good ideas and some really good people behind the scenes and hopefully I can add to that. “We have a succession plan, we
understand who’s leaving school, who’s coming to the club. “There is success in winning but I won’t rate thing solely on that initially, but it’s more about creating a culture that helps that.” Jono says part of his role is to entice players to the club but he’d rather invest in the people who are at the club already. “If you’re learning, you get better and you progress. “I’d like to get a Waimea way of playing going that suits the players at the club.”
