Dedicated volunteers Simon Bloomberg Kathy Cuthbert may have retired from her administration job at Nelson Hospital after 38 years but her contribution to the patient’s welfare will continue as long as the hospital’s buggy keeps shuttling patients up and down the hill. The popular, free shuttle service, which is run by volunteers, was started in June 2006 after Kathy noticed that many patients were struggling to walk from the car park up the steep hill to the hospital’s main entrance way. She discussed her concerns with some colleagues and the hospital’s senior management and subsequently formed a committee to raise funds to purchase a buggy for a patient’s shuttle service. “The service started because I noticed that people were exhausted after walking up the hill to the hospital entrance. Whangarei Hospital already had one so we talked to them about it to get some ideas and then started
