Election 2017 – the big issue

Daffodil growers on show Picking some champion daffodils for this weekend’s show should have been easy for world-renowned daffodil breeder John Hunter, but this week’s cold, wet weather is making things blooming tricky. John has been growing and exhibiting daffodils for more than 70 years after entering his first Nelson Horticultural Show as a nine-year-old in 1945. Since then he has won hundreds of national and international awards but says finding a champion bloom this season is proving challenging. “I’ve not known a year like it,” John says. “It’s been so cold and wet and the heavy rain we had early this week ruined all the flowers. We got one or two picked before the rain but everything out in the paddock got hit. It’s been a dreadful season.” However, John says there are still a few days for new flowers to open in time to be picked for the show which has attracted about 50 growers from around the country. The South Island National Daffodil Society Show is being hosted by the Nelson Bays Daffodil Group and the Brightwater Horticultural Society at the Hope Hall on Main Road Hope on Saturday from 1.30pm to 4.30pm and Sunday from 9am to 3.30pm. Entry costs $4 with children free.

Judene Edgar This Saturday, September 23, is General Election day – your chance to have a say in the government and the future direction of the country. Advance voting opened September 11, and as of Monday, over 445,000 votes have already been cast, nearly double the number of advance votes received in the 2014 election. The 1 News Colmar Brunton Poll for the period September 9 to 13 had Labour sitting on 44 per cent with National close on their heels at 40 per cent, and the Green Party on seven per cent. In the Nelson electorate, it’s a close race with Labour and the Green Party putting up candidates against MP Nick Smith. The Waimea Weekly asked the National, Labour and Green party candidates for Nelson and West CoastTasman “what do you consider is the single biggest issue facing the Tasman District and where do you stand?” Nelson Electorate Rachel Boyack, Labour:

The general election is this Saturday and the political landscape has definitely changed since Jacinda Ardern took over the leadership of the Labour Party. Waimea Weekly asked locals who they thought would win the election and which local candidate would win.

Proposed liquor outlet ‘too close’ to schools Judene Edgar Richmond looks set to become home to the South Island’s first Black Bull Liquor Store. Richmond LiquorMart Ltd have applied for an off-license for the former Dick Smith building on the corner of Gladstone Rd and Queen St. Despite the application being officially notified last week, Waimea Weekly spoke to the adjoining businesses and none were aware of the application. Under new regulations, the only public notification required is a notice on the Tasman District Council’s website and a notice on the building.

Richmond Unlimited chair Marina Buonocore says she’s not sure how the public would know about such proposals. “There should be more information more readily available. You shouldn’t have to go looking for it,” she says. With three existing liquor outlets, two supermarkets, and another two supermarkets planned, Marina says liquor is already very accessible. Holy Trinity Anglican Church vicar Susan Gill echoed her concerns. “I wouldn’t have thought we needed another one. I would have thought we have plenty,” says Susan. An anonymous flyer has been

circulated along Oxford St, raising concern about the potential impacts on nearby preschools, schools and churches. Richmond Preschool manager Stacey Gallagher says, “we don’t need to add to the social problems already prevalent in our community.” Frank Housiaux from Oxford Court Motel says it’s too close to parks and schools. “We see and hear drunken sods around the place enough already,” he says. However, Richmond LiquorMart director Sahil Sharma says Richmond and the surrounding area is growing and that there is room for another liquor outlet. “The problems of drunkenness are more associated with on-licenses. Our customers are more likely to drive away after purchasing,” says Sahil. While he acknowledged the proximity of preschools, schools and churches, he says that there are none within the “immediate vicinity”. Any objections to the application need to be received by September 29. Details of the application and the objection process are available under the public notices section of the council website.

Helping families help themselves Charles Anderson Les Watt wants you not to worry - all families are crazy. But that doesn't mean that some don't need help. Les has been a psychiatric nurse for 38 years and, in that time, has seen the benefits that family therapy can give to people. But he has also seen a distinct lack of offering for those who really need it. Instead of lamenting this, he decided to do something about it. Elstree Family Conversations is a free service to families which brings together four other experts to offer sessions that help unpick family conflict. "All families are diverse and you can't judge another family from your own," Les says. "When people are in conflict they go into their natural way of being which they initially observed and developed in their family of origin." Sometimes they might blame others or become aggressive. Les says the sessions can help people and families become aware of how they react in conflict situations, which can help each family member make small but significant changes in the future. By understanding different fam-

ily roles you're no longer a prisoner to them." He says the best predictor of success is self-control. "We are helping families improve their self-control." The five professionals donate their time and energy to put together a session that would oth-

erwise cost $1200. "We are doing it because we know how successful it can be and we know that others can't offer it," Les says. "I think something like this would have been such a good help to my own solo father." He says one session can make a

big difference and is not a huge commitment for a family. The team was based at Victory but are now looking for a permanent home and hoping someone might want to donate a comfortable, warm space. They have seen 10 families in Victory and want to be able to of-

fer their service to about 15 families a year. Les says they hope local GPs might think of them when they are approached by clients in relationship distress. For more information, you can email lg.watt@orcon.net or call 0221098756.

New owners for Harakeke subdivision The Harakeke residential development near Tasman has been sold but the new owners are enthusiastic about retaining all the community benefits the development will bring to the district. Controversial American developer Alan Trent has sold the 178 hectare site off Aporo Rd, Tasman, with resource consent for 96 sections, to Carsten Buschkuehle who moved from Germany with his family in December. The Buschkuehles, who have known Alan Trent “for many years”, are now Tasman residents and Carsten says he’s “fully behind all the community benefits that will be created as part of the development, that will make it much more than just a subdivision”. “We will start on some of the restoration projects, especially the coastal walkway and the works around the waterways, early on in the process, as nature needs time to develop to achieve a high-quality outcome,” he says. “The restored waterways, coastal walkway, open spaces and shared cycle and walking paths will make this place really special and will be for

Police seek families affected by Richmond grave vandalism Police would like to hear from families affected by the vandalism of about 70 grave sites in the Richmond Cemetery earlier this month. The families will be invited to attend a Youth Aid family group conference with the two youths who allegedly damaged the graves, police and a Youth Aid officer to decide on appropriate punishment for the senseless attacks. However, Nelson Bays Youth Aid Sergeant Charlie Parfitt says they are “having trouble” contacting the next of kin with only around 10 to 15 families coming forward by the end of last week. “We want to hold a Family Group conference in three to five weeks so we’d like these families to contact us so we can invite them to come,” Charlie says. “The conference will decide where we go from here and determine how these youths are held accountable, so it’s really important.” One of the possible outcomes from the conference is that the youths will have to attend a Youth Court hearing. Youth Court is for offenders under the age of 17 who cannot be named or identified in any other way. Charlie says the families can contact Donna Smith at Nelson Victim Support by phoning 03 5463847 or emailing donna.smith@victimsupport.org.nz.

From an idea and an ad in the paper 46 years ago, today the Nelson Country Music Club is a thriving organisation with many of its members going on to win national awards and play professionally. The club celebrated their 46th birthday in true country music style last Sunday evening at Club Waimea with a foot stompin’ sing-along. Club secretary Sharon Martin says about 100 people came along to celebrate. After some socialis-

ing they had a barbeque dinner, before kicking off their normal fortnightly club night complete with backing band and plenty of opportunities for people to get up and sing. “It was a roaring success,” says Sharon. “It’s a family club – families where parents and kids all sing together.” Life member Janine Friend, who enjoyed the opportunity to reminisce and catch up, says she joined the club when she was 16. “I progressed and played in bands for about 20 years and that’s how I started, and you’ll find that’s how most of the people who are in bands out there today started, with country music.” Long-standing member Sandy Colvin says the club was established after Alan and Diane Pepperell, who were the resident band at the old Tasman Tavern, came up with the idea. The Club was formed in 1971 with the late Tex Morton, as the first club patron. Nelson-born Tex was known as the grandfather of country music and after he died the club fund-raised to have a memorial plaque at the Trafalgar Centre grounds. A bronze bust of Tex also stands in Centennial Park in Tamworth. After a few years the ‘western’ was dropped and the club was renamed the Nelson Country Music Club, opening the door to a more modern style of country. The country music scene expanded further in 1982, thanks to an idea from the late Margaret Baigent, when the NZ Sun City Country Music Awards was launched. Now in its 32nd year, many winners have gone on to have successful country music careers. To be held over Labour Weekend at the Hope Community Church this year, the awards are “pretty big”, attracting people from all over NZ. “It’s just fostering country music basically,” says Sharon. The Club continues to be strong in both members and talent. Club nights are held every second Sunday at Club Waimea from 6pm. For more information go to the ‘Nelson Country Music Club’ Facebook page.

New app for Nelson a hit

Breaking news, things to do, services all in one app

The Nelson App features breaking news and sport, as well as a range of things to do and services. Best of all, it’s free.

A new smartphone app is proving a hit with locals, with it being downloaded by almost 7000 people in its first few months. The Nelson App features breaking local news and sport, current weather reports, things to do, movie and theatre listings, trades and services, restaurants and pubs, a gig guide, real estate, health and beauty, a kids corner, flight information, maps of the region’s mountainbike tracks, walking tracks and cycle ways and much more. Managing Director of the locallyowned Nelson App, Andrew Board,

says it’s perfect for locals as well as visitors to the region. “We wanted to make it an app for locals first and foremost, it had to have things that would enrich locals’ lives. Then we looked at what visitors would like to see, basically something that would act as a portal for all of Nelson and Tasman,” he says. “And so far the feedback has been phenomenal. People tell us they love it, so we’re delighted.” Andrew says the Nelson App isn’t the only one of its kind, with sister apps in Wanaka, Central Otago and

Ashburton. “Hopefully we’ll see an app like this in every city and town of the South Island so when you travel to a new place you simply need to download their app. It’s so easy for people to use and gives you all the information you need in one place.” The Nelson App is free to download and is available for anyone with a smartphone. You simply need to visit the App Store (for Apple users) or Google Play (for Android users), search “The Nelson App” and follow the prompts.

Sonaia speaks up for Te Reo Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tuia Te Matangi student Sonaia Beard has been thinking long and hard about the saying, ‘Ka kūkū te kererū, ka auau te kurī, kei te kōrero Pākehā tonu te iwi Māori’. And this Friday Sonaia, 14, will be presenting her take on those words at Nga Manu Korero, the national finals of a Maori secondary schools’ speech competition in New Plymouth. The student from Richmond’s Maori language immersion school qualified for the finals after winning the regional competition in May and has been given the saying as her topic at the national final. ‘Ka kūkū te kererū, ka auau te kurī, kei te kōrero Pākehā tonu te iwi Māori’ translates into the ‘the kereru chatters, the dog barks but Maori are still speaking English’ and Sonaia says she’s regarding the phrase as a question. “I’ll be looking at it as a question in my speech. Why should Maori speak English when animals don’t change

Sonaia Beard, centre, with Irihapeti Luca, left, and Te Epereraki Alleyne are heading to New Plymouth for Nga Manu Korero Photo: Simon Bloomberg their language and people around the world still speak their own languages?” Sonaia says she can relate to the topic because “I was brought up speaking Maori but then lost the language a little at primary school”. However, Sonaia says she soon found her language again when she started at Te

Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tuia Te Matangi in 2012. Sonaia says the speech competition is valuable because it encourages students not only to speak Maori but also to present their ideas and opinions in public. School principal Lara Wharerau says they are proud of Sonaia for reaching the finals.

“Sonaia is only 14 but she is an outstanding leader who is already tutoring our kapa haka group,” Lara says.” Sonaia has received support from Te Puni Kokiri, Ngati Apa ki te Ra To and the PPTA and will accompanied to New Plymouth by her school friends Irihapeti Lucas and Te Epereraki Alleyne.

Could an adjustable bed help your sleep?

Richmond and Districts Highland Pipe Band secretary Joy Gowan is gearing up for their 50th anniversary.

And the band plays on Judene Edgar

Appointed the official band of the Richmond Borough Council in 1998, the Richmond and Districts Highland Pipe Band are getting prepared for their half century celebrations later this year. Secretary Joy Gowan and her husband Les, who is also a committee member, have been involved with the band for over 30 years since their two daughters played. “The kids have grown up and left home and we’re still there,” says Joy. Joy is most proud of the fact that for 50 years the band has been offering free piping and drumming lessons. Despite losing much of their equipment in the fire that destroyed the old Mechanics’ Institute building, a small shed which stood behind the present Town Hall, the band bounced back and is still going strong. “We fund-raise a lot,” says Les. “We used to bag coal and sell firewood.” Their two main fund-raisers these days are their Easter and Christmas

raffles, along with garage sales and baking. In fact, founding secretary Ian Gill only gave up selling raffle tickets last year. Joy says that it isn’t a competitive band, instead they like to focus on playing at community events, particularly the ANZAC service, Christmas parade and A & P Show. “We give back to the public because they’ve supported us,” says Joy. The band are planning a dinner on Saturday, November 4, and are calling out to all past and present members interested in attending. They’re also keen to welcome new members along, or young people keen to learn how to play. “We have all the equipment and it’s free, so it’s a great opportunity for children wanting to learn an instrument and give back to the community,” says Joy. Anyone interesting in learning to play, wishing to join the band, or past members keen to come to the 50th anniversary celebrations, can contact Joy on 544 8200 or email ljgowan@xtra.co.nz.

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Q: A:

Every year I seem to be caught short and not have enough money for birthdays and Christmas. How do other people manage these expenses? People prepare for this in different ways. Consider if these options could work for you:

 A separate savings account with a regular automatic payment - E.g. to spend $500 on presents each year save $10 per week - Accounts can be made ‘hard’ to access if you want prevent yourself dipping in too early  Make weekly payments into supermarket or retailer Christmas Clubs - There is often a bonus added by the business - With most, you can access your money from 1st Nov - You get to buy the items you want  Spread the cost throughout the year by buying at different times - E.g. when items are on sale - E.g. buy one gift every month  Putting items on layby - No added fees - Can buy when on sale - Pay it off over a few weeks These options are the most cost effective ways to prepare. Avoid getting into debt to fund Christmas and birthdays.

Young professionals prep for popular ball The Nelson Young Professionals are preparing for their everpopular annual ball, to be held on the waterfront next month. The group of young working Nelsonians host many social events throughout the year, but organiser Bridget McCormick says the ball is the cherry on top. “It’s a chance to dress up nicely and have a great night, The Boathouse will be all decorated, we’re expecting great numbers and we’re all very excited about it.” Sponsored by My Tax, the "All Aball'd" ball will feature live music from "Don't Frett”, graz-

ing tables, spot prizes, and a fun night out on the high seas for Nelson’s younger demographic. “We’re all about connecting young working people in Nelson with each other, the Nelson lifestyle, and the community, and the ball is the perfect place to get together, have fun and meet new people.” Held at The Boathouse on October 14, the "All Aball'd" ball is open to both members and non members. Tickets are $90 for members, $110 for non members, and are on sale now at www.nyp.co.nz

Just a thought... Rev Martin Harrison Brightwater Community Anglican Church Some people have crazy ideas. Like the rumour that Churches are always fighting with each other. I remember once answering a knock at the door and being delivered a pre-prepared speech based on how disappointing it is that churches fight. I asked the person where they were from and how much they knew about the community in which they were door knocking. They said they came from another town and knew little about the local community. I smiled and replied ‘there used to be three churches in the town but they had joined together to become one church’. It rather deflated their sales pitch. Recently, 15 local churches held a

joint service to celebrate the unity the local churches share. One person joked, churches are like icecream, we are all the same with different flavouring. At this joint service, the churches re-signed a statement of faith which expressed a commitment to each other and a desire to work together to serve all that live within the district. This is regularly shown by ministers meeting each month to pray, talk and find ways to share resources, and by the joint projects undertaken by the churches and the occasional joint service. Psalm 133:1 How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! Can we be brave enough to ask what we can do to build unity and how can we show it to a world which is often scarred by fights and false rumours?

Nelson Tasman Hospice receives $80,000 The Nelson Tasman Hospice are edging closer towards their new $11.5million facility after receiving the deposit for the purchase of the hospice’s current building. The Manuka Street Hospital are buying the building to allow room for their own expansion and when presented with the $80,000 cheque on Friday, Nelson

Tasman Hospice chairman John Peters said it was a milestone for both healthcare providers. “We’ve known for some time that this wasn’t going to be our forever home,” says John. “We’ve been putting money aside but we don’t have enough yet, so contributions like this are very significant and we intend to acknowledge the do-

nation within the building - there will always be a part of Manuka Street in the hospice.” The money will go towards building the new facility on Suffolk Rd in Stoke, which will include 10 suites, consulting rooms, outdoor areas, and space for families to meet and spend time together. The hospital will give the remain-

der of the $800,000 for the building to the hospice when they move out of the building in 2019. Hospice CEO Frans Dellebeke says the move is timely given the expanding hospice services. “At any given point we have 10 people in the hospice and are looking after around 140 families.” Manuka Street Hospital chair-

man Graeme Skeggs says it’s good to get to this point. “We’re both expanding organisations and were put in a position where there was simply not enough room for both of us to grow.” The hospital are currently completing the first stage of their $25million extension.

“EVERYONE KNOWS MY MOLLY.”

Jessie Johnston

As the Last Post rang out on Sunday morning, it was thoughts of the Battle of Britain and the Pacific Battles of World War II that filled the heads of those attending. The Royal New Zealand Air Force Association, Nelson branch, hosts a lunch once a month where members socialise and share service stories. Held at Club Waimea, last Sunday’s lunch was a little more formal than usual as RNZAF association members gathered with the No.23 (Nelson) Squadron Air Training Corps, for the annual commemoration of the battles. “New Zealand was very much

involved in the Pacific Battles, although we have some members who were in the Battle of Britain and a lot of New Zealanders flew in it,” says association secretary Lindsay Campbell. After France was overrun by Germany in May 1940 it appeared that Britain was standing alone, but instead of ceasing hostilities it decided to continue fighting the war. After weeks of battling in the skies, the final straw came for the Luftwaffe when it lost 56 aircraft in just one day, September 15, 1940. Realising the RAF was far from beaten and unable to sustain such losses, the Luftwaffe instead switched to night bombing cities and industrial com-

“I really am so happy here.” When Bev found out she was able to bring her mini schnauzer Molly to her Summerset retirement village, she was thrilled. “Molly is very important to me, I wouldn’t have wanted to make the move without her.” After being at Summerset for only a few months, Bev was surprised at how quickly she settled into village life. She really likes the feeling that she’s secure and that help is always at hand should she need it. She says that living at Summerset has given her a great sense of relief, “Now I can relax.”

plexes, with September 15 becoming known as the Battle of Britain. Among the 574 pilots and air crew who took part in the battle, 127 were from NZ. During the battle, July 10 to October 30, 544 lives were lost, including 12 from NZ. On VJ Day, the RNZAF had more than 7000 personnel stationed throughout the Solomon Islands with 24 RNZAF squadrons seeing service in the Pacific. From September 3, 1939, to August 15, 1945, 3687 RNZAF personnel died on active service. Lindsay says they are always looking for new members whether people are ex-air force, navy or army, or simply share the association’s interests.

Despite the variety of topics, slime and germs were definitely the most popular. Bell enjoyed being able to come up with something that they were interested in, looking at the relationship between practice, coaching and performance. The boys have a new-found respect, not only for going to practice, but for the advice of their coaches. “People were better at kicking goals if they practiced, but they were even better after coaching,” says George. The mini Fair serves as a taster for the regional Cawthron SciTech Expo, being held later this month at the Trafalgar Centre. The Expo is promising to be not just for the kids, but an opportunity for the public to see the works of amazingly talented budding artists, scientists and technologists from years 0 to 13. “It is a fantastic community event, bringing together scientists, students, teachers, local and national businesses, all working together to support our region’s young enquiring minds,” says Cawthron Foundation secretary Elizabeth Bean. With a number of changes to the Expo including an Art in Science section, a science communicators award and entries being received in Te Reo, Elizabeth says there will be something to capture everyone’s imagination. And with 350 entries on display at the revamped Trafalgar Centre, Elizabeth says they’re hoping the new location will make it more accessible for people wanting to come and have a look. Entry is free for the public to come and view the entries on Tuesday, September 26, from 9am to 6pm. The science communicators presentations will be taking place from 4pm to 6pm on the same day with guest speaker Cawthron aquaculture scientist Norman Ragg.

• The two ATM’s near Hannahs have been removed until the tiling is completed. We expect to have them back by mid-October at the latest. Kiwi Bank customers are welcome to get cash out from Paper Plus, with no additional charge. • We are very excited to have Flossie the Balloon Lady here for the first week of the school holidays. She will be doing the Ultimate Balloon Twisting workshop. There will be two sessions each day from Monday to Friday, 12pm-1pm and 1pm2pm. Bookings are essential as there is only room for 30 kids per session. Kids under five years are to be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Bookings can be made at our Information Desk. • Operation Christmas Child has delivered their first 100 boxes to the Richmond Mall Information Desk. If you would like to support children in poverty, simply come and collect a box, fill it and return it to the Information Desk before October 27. Christmas shoe boxes from New Zealand are shipped to children in Fiji, Samoa, Cambodia, Papua New Guinea, Vietnam, Thailand and Vanuatu. You can even follow your box and discover which country it ends up in. It is helpful if $10 is also donated per box for shipping costs. This can be paid online or with cash placed in the box. Race for charities The Nelson Motorcycle Club is aiming to rev up its junior charity motocross after the inaugural event raised $5500 for some of Nelson’s favourite charities. The club’s mini and junior motocross was held at MotoX Park in Eighty-eight Valley last month with teams of riders racing for a designated charity. One of the organisers, Delwyn Leitch, says the event was well supported by the business community and riders raising $5500 for seven charities with the top three team’s charities

getting the biggest donations. The teams handed over their donations last Thursday with two members of the winning team, Seb Wardle and Harry Gardner, giving the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter a cheque for $3125. Seb, who finished second in the 125-200cc class, says it was a great event and “good to be able to race for charity as well as your team”. Rescue Helicopter Trust general manager Paula Muddle was delighted with the donation saying “we always need more

money to keep our helicopter flying.” The Angels Trio received $1100 and Nelson Regional Breast and Gynaecological Cancer Trust $825. The SPCA, Nelson Tasman Hospice, Waimea College Special Education Department and Fifeshire Foundation each received $137. “We are hoping that this event will grow in size and popularity in the future,” Delwyn says. “We had such good support from all the businesses we’d like it to become a permanent fixture on the Club calendar.”

Knight Riders win club basketball comp Andrew Board

The Waimea Knight Riders have run away with the Nelson Basketball Association men's A grade competition, thrashing the Stoke Bears last week. The Knight Riders, featuring basketball legend Phill Jones and Mike Pero Nelson Giant Ali Granger, lined up against the Stoke Bears which featured current Giants captain Sam Dempster. Sam says this year's competition

has been the best in a few years. "It's been really competitive. A couple of the college teams were really good, one beat us during the season and Waimea College almost beat the Knight Riders in last week's semi-final." The final was a one-sided affair though, with the Knight Riders showing too much energy for the Bears. "They played really well," says Sam. "We lacked energy and passion, it was pretty sad to see a final

go down like that. We've played those guys in finals for the past five years and it's always a really close game, so it's a shame this one wasn't." In the B grade, the Richmond Renegades beat Rhythm and Brown to win the title. Sam says there is a social basketball league held over the summer and the region's top players will start to train together. "The off season is far too long. But we try to keep ourselves fit and sharp."

Water for our future A shared solution that secures our region’s environmental and economic future

In New Zealand right now, the management of freshwater is a passionate topic and a political hot button. In Nelson Tasman, the Waimea Community Dam is at the heart of the debate. With the general election looming, some politicians and organisations supporting them have made statements about the Dam that are misleading or factually incorrect. That misinformation needs to be called out. For more than 15 years, Waimea Plains irrigators have been working side by side with Tasman District and Nelson City Councils, iwi, the Department of Conservation, and Fish and Game to identify a solution to the region’s chronic water shortages. While one candidate for national office opposes the Dam, other national candidates have joined the mayors of both councils and most of the region’s government and business leaders to recognise that Tasman needs a secure water supply right now. Doing nothing is not an option. Every alternative to the Dam has been explored and tested. Most importantly, any solution must assure an increase in the flows on the Waimea River that refresh the aquifers from which the region draws its freshwater. The solution must be affordable for all ratepayers and provide enough water to future-proof our region against drought conditions for generations. The Waimea Community Dam is the outcome of all that work. Multiple studies and investigations point to the singular fact that only the Dam meets all these objectives: • increases flows in the Waimea River which replenish aquifers • meets new national freshwater standards for the river • holds enough capacity for urban and primary production needs • leverages non-Council investment • secures the regional economy Every other solution is several times more expensive in capital and ongoing operational costs than the Dam.

Irrigation is often blamed for environmental degradation. Some say irrigation of dam water will lead to more nitrate leaching into groundwater and surface water on the Waimea Plains. This is highly unlikely. Pollution of the Plains aquifers has reduced over several decades. On most of the Waimea Plains nitrate concentrations in ground water are low and stable or decreasing compared to historic levels. Farmers have under taken to improve their horticultural practices, such as nutrient budgeting associated with fertiliser use and improved irrigation efficiency. The TRMP imposes new regulations on environmental impact. We’ve been told the Dam will lead to more dairying on the Waimea Plains. Again, this almost certainly will not happen. Land values have risen under horticulture farming and the three remaining dairy farms on the Plains have decreased from a recent high of seven. In fact, with a more secure source of water from the Dam, experts say it’s more likely dairying will transfer to some form of horticulture, which will increase land value and provide higher paying jobs. The most misinformed claim some have made is that ratepayers are subsidising irrigators with the Dam. This is completely false. The current funding proposal that will open for public consultation later this year recommends ratepayers contribute only one-third of the cost of the dam while Waimea Plains irrigators (also ratepayers) pay nearly half through direct equity (purchase of shares) and repayment of government loan. In fact, irrigator and Crown funding together amount to $55m of the total $82.5m cost. This is possible only because of the unique features of the Dam project’s impact on regional economic growth; it is fanciful to think this private investment could be more wisely spent elsewhere.

Waimea Irrigators Ltd is pleased to engage in informed debate on the Dam. We invite members of the public to contact us at any time for more information or visit www. waimeairrigators.co.nz and www.waimeawater.nz for more information.

From the presidents pen The Auckland Airport fuel pipeline failure and consequent loss of services illustrates just how important it is for any operation to have more than one pipeline of supply. Members through subscriptions, (by the way, have you paid yours?) hospitality and gaming can only provide so much. Hiring out facilities/parking is a useful add-on but limited. At Lewis Della Bosca Club Waimea, we are fortunate to have a second major supply pipeline – the caravan park – and it is essential that we look after, maintain and develop this asset. Planning studies currently underway seem to take forever, but I make no apology for taking as long as necessary to do the job properly. My only regret is that the process was not started several years earlier. We are determined to establish a long-term plan which will provide a secure future for the caravan park and the club and look after our very valuable long-term campers.

150,000 lifejackets, discarded by arriving refugees, form a huge mountain on the coast of Lesvos Visiting the life jacket graveyard, where refugees come ashore at the northern end of the Greek Island of Lesvos, was a profound moment for Richmond local, Lyn Ashby. “Each lifejacket represents hopes and dreams of a better life in a new county. But it is not based in reality,” she says. Borders have closed and processing can take a long time. The 67 year old has recently returned from spending 35 days volunteering in the Moria refugee camp on Lesvos. In 2012 and 2013 she also spent some time working with refugees in Greece. Back then the refugees were mostly from Afghanistan and Iran. Today half of those in the Moria camp come from North African countries such as Sudan, Morocco, Algeria, Eritrea, Egypt and Gambia. The other half of the refugees came from a mix of countries including Afghanistan, Syria, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Iraq. At the time Lyn was there around 2,200 people were housed in the camp that was a former military prison. Lyn worked under the Non Governmental Organisation, Euro Relief. They were responsible for the daily running of the camp. Lyn was involved in security on gates, to help keep all the refugees safe, rubbish collection and other duties. The refugees can come and go as they please from the camp but there are areas set aside that others are not allowed to

enter for unaccompanied minors 18 years and under, young families and single women. Lyn says the reason people become refugees is quite varied. Some are economic refugees looking for work to send money back home to their families. “Some people just want to get out and start a completely new life because there is no livelihood for them or they are persecuted or escaping war.” Lyn says on average it takes 17 years for a refugee to be resettled in a new country. “It takes time to set up a new life, learn a language, reeducate themselves, find a job and a home. It is a really long time,” she says.

The video is about the poor conditions people in third world countries slave under so we can buy cheap consumer goods. It deals especially with clothing but the problem is much wider than just clothing. The multi nationals get their products made often in conditions we couldn’t imagine. No toilet breaks, no fire escapes, no fresh air, no holidays, no sick pay, and low wages.

The refugees are a cross section of society with some fastidiously sweeping the concrete outside their temporary homes and picking up all the rubbish whilst others drop their rubbish anywhere or throw away, unopened, the food they are given. Lyn says, “I came away with more questions than answers.”

If we buy articles made under those conditions, we are part of the problem. We perpetuate exploitation of vulnerable people who are trying to make a living for their family. Are you one of these? For those in the Moria camp it also doesn’t happen for everyone. Those from the Northern African countries were often frustrated because after processing, they were deported back to their countries. In fact resettlement in a new country is an option for only a small percentage of refugees.

Brightwater School enjoyed some beginner’s luck in finishing fifth at the national Rippa Rugby champs in Wellington this week. It is the first time Brightwater has qualified for the national event which features the top 20 teams in the country. Brightwater qualified for nationals after defeating Richmond School 7-3 in the regional finals earlier in the year. Brightwater lost its first pool game to defending champions Counties Manukau in a close contest 8-7 on Monday. However, Brightwater bounced back to beat West Coast 11-4, Taranaki 11-2

and Bay of Plenty 7-3 to reach the quarter-finals. Unfortunately, Brightwater lost the quarters to North Harbour 7-3 on Tuesday before beating South Canterbury and Manawatu to finish fifth. “It’s our first time so we were a bit nervous about it but really excited too,” team captain Harris Inch says. Harrison says their team work helped give them an edge against some of the top schools in the country, with three of their 10-players starring in the Wanderers Under-11 Gold side that was unbeaten in club rugby this season. The Brightwater team also includes Harrison’s sister Lucy and Makenna Holland, who play for Wanderers Under-10 Gold.

Harrison says making the transition from 15-a-side tackle to seven-a-side Rippa is easy “because you use all the same skills, it’s just the rules that are different”. The Brightwater side also has the advantage of some expert coaching from Wanderers

star Jesse Pitman, who Harris says is a “really good coach.” The national finals were played by year 5 and 6 pupils with team squads consisting of five boys and five girls. A team has seven players on the field at any one time of which three must be girls.

The Brightwater Rippa team celebrate finishing fifth at the national champs in Wellington on Tuesday.

Richmond School rugby league fans got a special treat leading up to this week’s Simon Mannering Cup tournament when the man himself visited the school to talk footy with the kids. Simon, who attended Nelson College before starting his lengthy career with the Warriors in 2005, donated the Simon Mannering Cup in 2010. The cup will be on the line

again on Wednesday when 11 primary school teams from around Nelson and the West Coast converge on Champion Field for the oneday tournament. “It’s cool that these kids can start playing at this level,” Simon says. “There was nothing like this when I was at school so hopefully this will encourage them to keep playing the sport at secondary school.” Simon was back in Nelson before returning to Auckland to join the World Cup trainon squad.

He says the squad for the World Cup will be named on October 15. Richmond School rugby league coach Raewyn Brenton says they have won the Simon Mannering Cup for the last four years and will be keen to make it five in a row. The school has three teams which she has been coaching with the help of parents Tahi Johnson and Jacob Davis, as well as Tasman Rugby League development officer Duke Climo. “Nobody else wanted to

do it so I put my hand up,” Raewyn says. “I watched league on television and picked up a lot from that and I get some really good help from Tahi, Jacob and Duke.” As well as coaching the kids, Raewyn had some advice for Simon and the underperforming Warriors saying, “their coach needs to make it enjoyable and the team needs to believe in themselves” and they’ll win more games. The Simon Mannering Cup will be held at Champion Field, adjacent to Saxton Field, on Wednesday.

The Tasman Swim Club has another national representative with Bree Anderson selected to compete for New Zealand at the Australian State Teams championships in Canberra starting on Friday. Bree, 14, has been enjoying a successful season, winning the girls 12-14 age group 200m and 400m individual medley at the South Island champs in Blenheim last month. The year 10 Waimea College student’s good form has been rewarded with her selection in a 40-swimmer squad for the Australian State champs at the Australian Institute of Sport from September 22-24. Although Bree has shown plenty of potential in the IM, she will be competing in the 200m backstroke and 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle at the champs. The event STH 05 28 SS will also a_feature team relays. “I like the IM and

However, she attributes her success to Tasman Swim Club coach Andy Adair who has been guiding her progress for five years. “I’ve been swimming competitively for five years and Andy has really been my only coach. He does a really good job – he’s amazing.” Bree will compete in her third major meet in three months when she joins her Tasman Swim Club teammates at the national short-course champs in Auckland from October 3-7.

With a wide-ranging shopping area, the largest mall in the Top of the South, a great choice of places to eat and being within close proximity to three stunning national parks, the opportunities available in Richmond for visitors and locals is impressive. Richmond Unlimited has the important job of showcasing these attractions, businesses and events so that Richmond can continue to thrive as the hub of the Tasman District. In July this year, the association held it’s AGM when a new committee was voted in, and apart from a couple of new faces, the committee has remained consistent. Marina Buonocore of Craig Anderson Chartered Accountants has retained the position of chairperson, Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq returns as vice chair with Crowe Horwath also still holding the role of treasurer, this time with Nick Eden representing them. Other members include Rob

Hambrook from Subway, Jane Cunliffe from Hothouse, Sue Lubransky of The Pacific.net, Karyn Thomas from Copyart, Martina Kidd from Muffin Break and Nicola Woodbury from The Wooden Spoon, while Trevor Tuffnell is the Tasman District Council representative and Charlotte Bidlake is the committee’s marketing, events and administration co-ordinator. Some of the tools used by the committee to help promote this town and represent the business district include year-round free parking and wifi, as well as a website, w w w.richmondunlimited. co.nz which acts as a local directory, and a Facebook page ‘Love Richmond’. The organisation also produces an enewsletter to keep Richmond businesses and the wider community up to date with everything happening in our town. The committee has also been involved with the Queen St upgrade including two related promotions, Cash on Queen

and the Queen St Digger Hunt and are behind Richmond’s three major events, the Richmond Santa Parade on Sunday, November 26, Richmond Market Day on Friday, December 29, and the ever-popular Sprig & Fern Summer Harvest Fair which will be held in March next year. These are always well attended by locals and give people the opportunity to celebrate the vibrant town we live and work in. The website and Facebook page are a great source of information on Richmond’s businesses and service providers, or for information about Richmond Unlimited’s regular events and happenings. Alternately, people can visit ItsOn for a list of activities happening in the region. As summer draws near, the dedicated committee will keep working diligently in everyone’s interest so we can proudly share our wonderful town with those from near and far.
