Waimea Village sale likely Exactly 100 of the 172 home owners of Waimea Village have already accepted a proposal to buy the village, enough to push forward with the plan. Kit Maling stitched a deal together last month to buy the village on behalf of the residents but needed the majority to agree to pay the roughly $8000 needed to pull it off. After proposals were sent out two weeks ago Kit says 100 have already come back saying they are happy to buy a slice of the village, with another 14 happy to stay on as lease holders. The number could increase with a further 58 home owners yet to reply. If the sale is successful it will end almost three years of bitter dispute between the residents and the owners of the village, Michael and Carolyn Wright. The Wrights have attempted to raise the monthly levy payment

for each resident from $80 in 2010 to $300 this year. Residents own their own homes and pay the levy on top of normal rates and other charges. Kit’s proposal would see the residents each buy a 172nd share of the village with a board of five employing a part time manager to make sure it runs efficiently. It would mean the residents have control of the village. An early-November deadline has been set for the sale to go unconditional and Kit says the residents should be free from the Wrights by Christmas. “We still have to do our due diligence. But we now have enough to make buying the village viable, which is a great start.” SEE PAGE 2

The shoot may not be good for the concentration of club members who come across it though. “I don’t think they would have ever seen anything else quite like it in all of their years of golf,” says Joyce.

Waimea Village sale likely to go ahead FROM PAGE 1 Chair of the Waimea Village Residents Association, Jerry Rowland, says it would be great for the residents to control their own destiny but the fight still isn’t over. He says a proposal to postpone arbitration over another disputed levy increase and a court case over the disputed repair and replacement fund was rejected by the Wrights. “We asked for it to be postponed because two conditions of purchase are that the court case and arbitration be dropped. And because of that we requested postponement to save money until such time as we find out if the purchase is going to go through or not.
“They said no, they rejected it and they want to proceed with arbitration, even though it will be invalid if the sale goes ahead.” Jerry says the fact that 100 people have already confirmed that they are keen to buy a stake in the village is great news. “That’s brilliant. We’re delighted that this is taking place, granted there are some things in the deal that some people aren’t happy with. Some people feel the price is too much but we need to think pragmatically and get him the hell out of here. The benefits that we will receive from it will far exceed the negative aspects of it.” The final date for the purchase to go through is November 1.
Charity to host auction evening A local charity aimed at providing free school and sports footwear to children in need is gearing up for its first major event. Walk With Us will host an auction at the end of this month with the hope of raising the money needed to make a difference. The auction will feature products and services that have been donated from local businesses and will be held on Tuesday October 29, at the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms. Drinks, canapés, cash and eftpos available. If you would like to donate an item for the auction or purchase your ticket for just $10 call Anne Marie Teece on 027 544 8255 or Nancy Cowling on 027 496 4720.

NEWS in brief
BUTTERFFLY BOUNTY HUNTERS: Nelson butterfly bounty hunters have so far netted 47 great white butterflies, scooping a $10 reward for each dead butterfly. The more numerous small white butterflies are proving easier to track down with 947 of these also handed in to the Department of Conservation in the first week of a two-week school holiday $10 bounty on great white butterflies. DOC staff want dead small white butterflies handed in to double check they are not great white butterflies. This Friday, 11 October, is the last day for collecting the $10 reward. REFUGE FUNDRAISING TOPS $18,000: After seeing how much the almost $19,000 raised last year was needed by the Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge, Car Company owner Shane Drummond decided they simply had to do it again. And not one to do things by halves, his team has come up trumps again, raising a staggering $18,354.30 in just one month. Shane and his team dedicate the month of September to raising money for the refuge by donating a percentage of each car sale to the cause, collecting on the streets and hosting a massive quiz night and auction. Despite miserable weather on one of their collecting days, this year’s total is just a couple of hundred dollars off the massive amount raised last year.
Richmond growth ‘still strong’, says mayor Richmond’s phenomenal growth over the past five years won’t be slowing any time soon says mayor Richard Kempthorne. Over the past five years Richmond West has been rezoned allowing it to be opened up for development, a new town square has been opened, several new developments on Queen St have been built and an influx of residents has seen new houses pop up in the town. Tasman’s mayor – who is seeking reelection this Saturday – says it’s been exciting to watch the growth and council’s role in it. “I think Richmond has developed well, both the business district and the residential development from the council’s point of view. It’s been exciting to see it grow in a positive way that will benefit the region for years.” He says catering for the population influx has been a big issue for the council and it has worked hard to great higher density housing in the town centre and pave the way for new development in Richmond West. “Richmond West was the most complicated planning process I’ve been involved in and council staff, myself and councillors worked steadily and consistently to get through that planning process. It took about five years to work through all the issues.” He says the land at Richmond West will cater for the commercial needs of the town for the next 20 to 30 years and the residential aspect of it will cater for the growth for the next 20 to 50 years.
Mayor Richard Kempthorne on Richmond’s Queen St. Photo: Andrew Board. “It is a place for Richmond to continue to develop. We also want to develop it will so that it’s not just spreading out over land, but so residential is as compact as possible and efficient.” As population grows Richard says keeping Richmond a busy shopping centre has also been a key part of making sure the town is vibrant and the mix of Queen St and the Richmond Mall has done that. “Richmond has held up pretty well over the past few years when other centres were really struggling and certainly with K-Mart and the Warehouse coming in, it will give us a lift. “People love free parking, which we’ve had for years, but with the Mall and
the Queen St shops, it’s a great place to come and shop and I actually heard a great story the other day of a lady from Westport, who said she loves coming to Richmond to shop. So it’s quite a destination for people.” Richmond is the largest centre in the Tasman District and Richard says he’s been proud to see how it’s developed into a major shopping and business hub and believes it will continue to be a powerhouse over the next few decades. “As a council we’ve worked really hard to make sure Richmond works effectively and efficiently and I think we’ve done that. Richmond is a great place to live, a great place to do business and a great place to shop.”

Recruitment drive saves fire service
The stocks are healthy at the Richmond Volunteer Fire Service, after its largest ever recruitment drive secured 11 new members. Spokesperson Craig Piner says the brigade was almost full and was no longer desperate for numbers, which meant it wasn’t having to rely on other brigades to back them up at call outs. “Sometimes we couldn’t manage our second truck but we’ve always managed to man the first one,” he says. Recruitment drives aren’t uncommon for volunteer fire brigades, but Craig says in
the past they have only needed to replace three or four people at a time. This recruitment drive lasted six months. “A heap” of volunteers moved out of the area at a similar time, which was the reason for the shortage. “The furthest away was someone who went over to the UK but some retired too and over the past year we got to a point when we were like ‘crikey’.” With family and work being number one priority, and people’s lives becoming busier, Craig says it can be difficult finding people that have the available time needed
Phillip Rollo Reporter
editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz to be a volunteer fire fighter. “We rely on the goodwill of the community to man the trucks. We just had to get the word out there that we are a volunteer service and we need the community to survive.” All of the new recruits will now undergo a training process during the next three months, which includes learning how to
use all of the equipment, how to deal with situations and ending with a seven day recruit course. “There’s a lot of hard work but they all seem to be enjoying it.” There was a mixture of people that had applied, including both men and women. The youngest recruit was in their early 20s while the oldest was mid-40s. “A couple of them were in the fire brigade a few years ago and had children but are now back in the position to help us again. There are four females amongst the 11, so it’s a good mix.”
Get out and vote!
With just days left in the local body elections, returns show that only around 30 per cent of people have voted in the Tasman District. The low number is concerning, especially considering the importance to our community those elected to council play. They help shape the way our region will grow and how it will grow. They decide what your rates bill should be and what facilities get built or upgraded and what doesn’t. All voting packs need to have arrived at the voting centre by lunchtime on Saturday to be counted. Every three years hundreds of voting forms arrive after the deadline, making them invalid. To have your vote counted you will need to get your papers in the post as soon as possible. In fact if you’re reading this, fill them out and post them away in the morning. Many people haven’t voted because they simply don’t know the candidates well enough. Have a look at who has worked hard in your community and who hasn’t. Remember we will get the council we deserve. In the mayoral race, it will be pretty close. Richard Kempthorne and Kit Maling are the two favourites and it’s hard to tell which will win the race to the mayoral chains so every vote will count. Have your say, vote and vote wisely.

Suburban Club still needs to raise cash
The annual masked parade is a great family event for Nelson, showcasing the wealth of creativity in the region. While the parade itself has never been a problem for police, each year we need to ensure that people enjoy the street party afterwards without incident. Months of planning and organisation goes into these two events and in recent years that has ensured they have been trouble free. I hope this year’s event will be too. The organisers have worked closely with police to mitigate any risks. The main issues from a policing point of view are unsupervised young people and alcohol - and most often it is the combination of the two that creates the real problems and ruins it for others. The entire area of the street party is designated a liquor ban area. Anyone bringing liquor into that area is committing an offence and, if caught, is likely to find themselves cooling their heels in a police cell. Likewise, people who turn up to the event intoxicated will not be tolerated. They are a risk to themselves and to other people. Parents who are allowing their children to attend this event unsupervised need to make sure they know who their children are with and have plans to pick them up afterwards. It constantly amazes me when I hear from my staff that they have taken youngsters home and their parents have no idea what they have been up to. Police will also be keeping a close eye on the roads in and out of town. Anyone who is stopped anywhere, at any time, can expect to be breath tested! Watch your speed and for goodness sake, don’t drink and drive.
The Suburban Club has not met its fundraising goal but says it is on the right track and the club will be saved from financial trouble. Last month Waimea Weekly reported that the club wrote to each of its 4800 members asking them to pay a $100 donation to help the club pay bills, including to the Inland Revenue Department. The board said at the time that it was confident of paying off the $300,000 it owed by the end of September. But club chairman Ross Strawbridge yesterday told the Weekly around 600 members have paid the donation, a response
he labelled “brilliant” but well short of what was hoped for. “We’ve received a substantial amount of donations from members which has been a great response as anticipated, the members are very supportive of the club and we have continued our request into this month.” Although the debt hasn’t cleared, Ross says the club is working with creditors and they are “happy” with the progress so far. “The creditors are on board, they’re happy that they are getting paid and the IRD’s happy.” Ross says the board became aware of the

arrears in August as the debt had not been disclosed in monthly management reports. They say the club is trading profitably after some cost cutting measures. The previous manager is no longer employed by the club and board member Glen Beattie is filling in while the board interviews candidates for the role. “We are in the process of interviewing applicants for the position this week and into next week. We’ve received some really top class applications,” says Ross. He says the club is still encouraging members to pay the donation.

Grey Power president: Candidate meeting won’t happen again What a tumultuous month it has been! When we set out to host Meet the Candidates forums we had no idea that it would become front page news as the Nelson Mail decided to take us to task for the manner in which the Nelson City candidates forum was conducted. With the benefit of hindsight, the decision to specify the numbers of candidates attending, which was entirely mine, was wrong and I regret that. As it turned out it
was actually a successful event on the night, and I was pleased to see how well the later Tasman Meet the Candidates forum went. No bad publicity and a good spirit prevailed among candidates. However, looking back this attempt by Nelson Grey Power to provide an opportunity for our members to get to know more about the people standing for both Councils proved to be too difficult. We won’t be doing it again! I apologise to any of our members who felt concerned about the bad

SeniorNet article: Thank you very much for the excellent article on SeniorNet Nelson. We are very pleased indeed. Much appreciated! E’beth McKendry, for SeniorNet Nelson. Damaged letterbox: At some point in the night last night my letter box was severely dealt to and its wrought iron stand/support bent around more than 90-100 degrees. It can’t have been hit by a car so was clearly a deliberate act - has anyone else had any damage to their property? I live in Queen St just up from Hill St. Paddy McBride. Television stolen from Richmond Mall: Where is the dislike button? Not happy to have lost this great promotional tool. BMG Nelson. Rocks Rd drivers: Why do the majority of drivers in this city leave ‘spaces’ between who they are driving behind, especially around Rocks Rd, therefore causing the traffic to build up to a crawl. This is the traffic going to Tahunanui, the traffic heading for Nelson don’t seem to be as bad. Maybe if the speed limit was raised to say 60k (like it is entering Chch in some areas may help), no doubt 70k would be too high, as there are a lot of drivers not

Mall celebrates 40 years Richmond Mall celebrated its milestone birthday with a trip down memory lane. First opening its doors in 1973 and revolutionising the way Nelsonians viewed shopping, it has come a long way since the early days says the first Richmond Mall manager Russell Watson. He was one of thirty people who each share a piece of the mall's history to gather on Saturday for a celebratory cocktail evening, dinner and reminiscing on the way it used to be. “It was great the way it all started. It brought more people to Richmond, just like it does today. It was really revolutionary. We were pioneers to a certain extent,” he says. Thirty one people gathered to celebrate the birthday, including one of the original owners, Pat Clegg, five original tenants and people who worked there from the time it opened. Two people also travelled from Australia for the event, which Russell says was “very special”. “I’m very glad we went ahead with the celebrations. The idea was toyed with for a while, but it is one of those things that if you don’t do you’ll regret afterwards.” While some things haven’t changed, such as being able to

Current Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq says the entire event was a huge success. “It was great to see so many of
the original tenants and owners attending. There were many great stories shared, Richmond Mall was one of only two malls in New Zealand in 1973 that traded on Saturdays. Now we trade seven days a week, it is amazing how times have changed.”

Stadium finally back in action Saxton Stadium is back open, and just in time for the South Island Masters Games. Tony Naylor of Sport Tasman admits things were “tight”, as the facility opened just one week before the games, right on the expected deadline. The stadium has been out of action since April’s flood caused significant damage. It resulted in an entirely new 3800 square metre hardwood floor as well as many new wall linings. With the stadium closed, sports codes had to use college gymnasiums and reschedule their season calendar. Table tennis, volleyball, basketball and netball all had to played at alternate venues, and Tony says some of the equipment still needed to be returned from the temporary sites. But he was grateful that the stadium could be used for the Masters Games. “Our focus was getting this up and running for the South

It has been very last minute and very tight but it’s great the 2500 people expected for the Masters games can enjoy this facility,” he says. “So easily we could have missed the deadline. It took ten weeks for the wood to arrive from Europe for the floor so it was a nervous wait.” The grade quality of the floor has improved but other than that the replacements have been like-for-like right across the stadium.

Golf club brings up 75 years They call themselves the most social golf club around, so it was no surprise Totaradale Golf Club’s 75th anniversary was a big hit. A glorious Sunday greeted past and present members of the club, as they took to the green for the Ambrose Tournament. A social was held at Club Waimea on Saturday night before a champagne breakfast the following morning. There was also a quiz held over the weekend. Club house manager Jackie Gibbs says it was an awesome weekend. “It was a really good mixture of past and present members and the champagne breakfast on the Sunday morning was just great. The ladies did a wonderful job with that,” she says. Jackie says 75 years was a great milestone for the club, which is situated on a tranquil nine hole course one kilometre up Pigeon Valley, outside Wakefield. “Oh

yeah it’s a big milestone. We had three life members planting trees, but there were no founding members here.” The club’s membership currently stood at 240. “It has sort of stayed the same over the last few years. I guess it’s down to the current economic times that it hasn’t grown, but it definitely hasn’t dropped and I think that’s down to our family friendly atmosphere. It’s such a social club.” The Ambrose Tournament included a shotgun start, which meant all of the players teed off at the same time, albeit on different holes. It was just another way to include everyone at the same time, and to get them partying in the clubrooms afterwards.

Farmer to support ‘home away from home’ A life changing experience has prompted tomato farmer Peter Hanna outside his comfort zone – way outside. Peter has recently returned from three months in Christchurch where he watched his wife Lynda battle leukaemia. It was, without a doubt, the toughest time of their lives but Peter says it was made so much better by an accommodation home for caregivers. Peter is so grateful that he is now leading a fundraising campaign to help it be earthquake strengthened. “I’m a tomato farmer so don’t know much about fundraising, it’s a bit outside my comfort zone but I thought I may as well throw my hat in the ring.” Ranui House is one of the accommodation blocks in Christchurch where the caregivers of sick patients can stay for free while they help their loved ones recover. It’s owned by a trust and was built after a substantial amount of fundraising. Peter is hosting three fundraising events in Nelson in an effort to raise some money for the house. The first is a concert at Hope Community Church, then a golf tournament and quiz night. He says Ranui House is used by dozens of Nelsonians each year and it does a fantastic job. “It really helped us. I can’t say enough about it or about the facility.” Three months ago Peter had never heard of Ranui House. Then Lynda went to the doctor with bruises and mouth ulcers and within 24 hours was on a plane to Christchurch with suspected leukaemia. He says concern for Lynda,

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz their business and three teenage children was enough to worry about. When they arrived in Christchurch, Peter says it was straight to the hospital and getting Lynda sorted in her room and contemplating what they had in store over the next few months as she fought the disease. For Peter, thoughts of where to stay over the next few months as he stood by Lynda’s side was the furthest thing from his mind and he says it stayed that way thanks to Ranui House. “Ranui was just magic. I went there that afternoon and they sorted me out with a room and it was just a few hundred metres from the hospital. It meant we didn’t have to think about accommodation, we could just concentrate on helping Lynda get well.” Lynda says the first round of chemotherapy was “awful” and having Peter so close was a huge help. “It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done and the thought of doing it without Peter was unbearable. He was my rock.” The first fundraiser is a concert at the Hope Community Church is on November 30, featuring George Rutledge and pianist Gabor Tolney. Tickets are available for $20 from the Waimea Weekly office on Salisbury Rd, Richmond Mall customer counter or Hope Community Church.

Model shines on mall catwalk Olivia Keenan had always wanted to enter in the Richmond Mall Model Search, but she just didn’t have the confidence to do so – until this year. And, having been crowned overall winner at Friday’s final, her confidence has rocketed so high she is now hoping her success could be the beginning of a career. “I’ve been told so many times that I’d make a good model so I thought I’ll try it out and see if I’ll like it,” says the 14 year old Garin College student. “I didn’t expect to win but this will definitely kick-start my modelling career.” Olivia says she was nervous up on the catwalk in front of the large audience but just focused on the task at hand and

Event judge Alana Riley described Olivia, who was entered in the intermediate category, as “the girl next door” because of her wholesome nature. “She has the potential to showcase a whole lot of different looks,” says Alana. “She can go on the catwalk, she’d be great with photography and she had a lot of confidence. She had a really good variation and that’s key for a model.” Alana says it was important for a model

to be versatile. “Otherwise they come out of the market because they’ve been used up. It’s like the Briscoes lady, she’s always the Briscoes lady. You want a model with a lot of looks.” With more entrants this year, Alana described the 2013 talent as “brilliant” with “lots of confidence”. “They’re just real cool, wholesome kids.” It was the second year in a row that a model in the intermediate category had taken out the competition. For winning the competition, Olivia will now be booked into a $500 fashion photo shoot with Wild Tomato and earned a year’s supply of skincare product from event sponsor Oxygen.
Property insights Why you should advertise your property It is important that you capture all of the potential buyers for your property. It is nice to know that all buyers have viewed your home and any offer that you have is the best on the day. There are several ways to do this via marketing. Online advertising is now very important as many hot buyers will be scanning the web sites several times a day looking for new listings. Online advertising also reaches those buyers that live outside your region or overseas. Other buyers still rely on printed advertising material.

Just a thought... We have all, I’m sure, heard the proverbs ‘you can’t take it with you’ and ‘shrouds don’t have pockets.’ However, it is in the nature of things that rich people sometimes find this knowledge irksome. Many people – perhaps ourselves too - feel in two minds about the idea of ‘riches’ – money and possessions far in excess of needs. On one hand, we love the thought of winning Lotto or the equivalent. On the other, we know about the suffering of the poor and destitute, and might feel a little guilty about our own good fortune by
comparison. As you know, the bible is a key source of guidance and inspiration for Christian people. The Old Testament section of the bible – written before Jesus – does not give a detailed or even consistent economic policy for human beings. It does though have quite a lot to say about ethics, the moral principles that govern human behaviour. It teaches, for instance, that there is nothing wrong in an honest profit. There is nothing intrinsically wrong in being rich. Jesus does make it plain, however, in the

New Testament, that there is life, and so eventually the death immense spiritual danger in knell of faith itself. The bible has being rich. My riches – what I also much to say about the rehave well in excess of my needs sponsibility of money and pos– can so easily obscure my need sessions. WOMEN in BUSINESS More than 25 years Real Estate experience If a potential purchaser asks Lydia Heyward about a paddock’s pH level, it’s more than likely she’ll know the answer. Not only does Lydia live on a rural property, but she’s been helping people into residential, lifestyle and rural properties for many years. Lydia says these days an agent needs to have a comprehensive knowledge of a wide range of issues relating to property. “Understanding people is still the most important skill a real estate agent can have,” says Lydia. “However, you also need to be familiar with various pieces of legislation related to the sale and purchase of property.”

Keeping up the communication Debbie knows how important it is to keep people informed when buying or selling property. “It’s essential to keep the communication going throughout the process – both buyers and vendors need to know what’s happening.” Debbie’s past work in HR and Health and Safety was also very people oriented, however it was a personal real estate encounter that sealed Debbie’s career move. Now living on a lifestyle block in Upper Moutere, Debbie is enjoying the space with her partner, two boys, sheep, cows and piglets.

Falcons coach Masters Games gets underway Rollo back for more Phillip Reporter Davor Tavich will be at the helm of the Nelson Falcons once again and has chosen last year’s captain Mark Johnston as assistant coach. The Falcons had a reasonably credible first season in the ASB Youth League, finishing fourth place in the Southern Conference with two wins, three draws and three defeats, and maintained strong home crowds throughout the campagin. Looking ahead to the 2014 summers season, Davor hinted that he would select a slightly younger squad this year. “I want to try and introduce some young talent this year, in order to give them some exposure and hopefully help them make the NZ U17 squad for the 2015 World Cup,” he says. Trial dates for the squad will be held at Saxton Field on October 17 and 24 from 6pm.

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz The organisers of the South Island Masters Games have praised the decision to turn Saxton Field into an athletes village, believing it has created a certain buzz around the event. The South Island Masters Games, which is being held in Nelson for the second time in three years, began on Saturday with a vast range of sports, combining both social and competitive athletes. Generally the age limit was 35 and over, but in some sports that had been lowered to encourage more entrants. A number of different facilities were hosting events, but the majority were at Saxton Field where the opening ceremony, socials and event bar were situated, making it an “event hub”, says Sport Tasman events manager Rita Merriman. “It has really enhanced these games. We’ve had great feedback so far about how people are liking the one central point,” she says. “They register here, play here and stay for the socials.” Despite some individual sports having minimal entries, Rita says everything was going smoothly and that the number of competitors was rising each day. Currently there were “upwards of 500” people taking part. “There are always some that have small numbers but going in we know that and they’re fine to

For us, as long as we can run a viable competition with the numbers we have then we’ll have a good time.” The most popular sports were football and netball, which is partly due to the more social nature of the competitions. While there were obviously some serious athletes, a lot of the teams, particularly in the women’s competitions, dressed up for the event. “I don’t know a

Banking on Marty
Waimea Old Boys and Tasman Makos first five Marty Banks lines up a shot at goal during the team’s big win over Waikato last Wednesday night. Later that week Marty had announced he will play for the Hurricanes in next year’s Super Rugby, before hopefully returning to Tasman. Photo: Phillip Rollo. It’s quite easy to overlook the fact that Marty Banks wasn’t actually selected in the Tasman Makos squad this year – remarkable considering it took just four games in the ITM Cup before the Hurricanes offered him a contract. With Hayden Cripps the incumbent, Tasman selectors opted for first five cover in the form of utility Billy Guyton and the youthful Mike Wells of Motueka instead, when the squad was announced in July. Fast forward three months and the curly haired 24 year old has already clocked up more than 100 points in five appearances, including a record setting 28 points in the round six win over Northland, he’s secured a Super 15 contract in Wellington, the New Zealand Herald has labelled him a “cult hero”, and more importantly, he’s steering the Makos towards the ITM Cup Championship finals. “It only happened less than a week ago and they called me. It was go-
Phillip Rollo Reporter
editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz ing to be a wider training squad role but by the Saturday at five o’clock they bumped it up to a full contract and I signed my part on Tuesday, they signed their part on Wednesday. It all happened in about five days,” Marty says, reflecting on his whirlwind week, inking a contract that could see him play in the same backline as All Blacks TJ Perenara, Beauden Barrett, Julian Savea, Conrad Smith and Cory Jane. “Up until Saturday I hadn’t even thought of a Super 15 contract. I was actually looking for work after ITM Cup. That’s how far away playing Super Rugby was from me.” Describing it as “out of the blue” and “a bit of a shock”, Marty will happily put his sales career on hold as he chances his dream of
being a professional rugby player in the capital. “It is surreal. I played four games and I got offered it after that. But the way the Makos are going a lot of the boys are being looked at and I was just lucky to be one of them,” he says modestly. But it’s certainly been a year of up and downs. Marty was left reeling in July when his decision to step out of Buller, who he helped win the Heartland Championship’s Lochore Cup, seemed to have backfired, missing out on the Tasman Makos just days before winning the club rugby season with Waimea Old Boys. However, he was eventually given his chance to prove the selectors wrong when injuries to Hayden Cripps and Robbie Malneek gave Marty the opportunity to come into the Tasman squad and he hasn’t looked back. His reliability, accurate kicking, and monstrous points tally has seen him become one of the competition’s
form players and while he openly admits he’s more comfortable at fullback, Marty should wear the number ten jersey come finals time. Tasman has struggled in the first five department ever since the team’s inception. Ben Gollings, Tim Taylor, Miah Nikora, James Marshall, Andrew Goodman, Robbie Malneek, Daniel Hawkins and James Proctor were all tried with varying success – some not up to the grade and others better suited in other positions. But now Tasman seems to have found their man, and surely they will be doing everything they can to keep him here. The timing of asking Marty the final question “are you keen to stick around at the Tasman Makos next year?” seemed perfect as CEO Andrew Flexman walked in the room, and his answer was one everyone in Nelson and Blenheim will be happy about. “I will definitely sign with Tasman.”
