Hot frocks on show at races Jonty Dine While thousands of punters poured in to watch the Nelson Cup at the Nelson Harness Races Summer Festival last weekend, others came dressed to the nines in hopes of winning the hotly-contested Fashion in the Field. The competition took place on the Sunday afternoon. Men’s winner Andy Wonderley says his outfit, complete with matching socks and undies, was only thrown together the night before. “It was pretty last minute but I go to the races a lot back home in the UK and it’s a massive thing back there, so I thought I’d dress up and make a day of it.” Judge Ange Leonard says they were look-

ing for something different this year. Ange says that they certainly got something different with Julie Penman’s avianinspired headwear. “She had an amazing hat and a well-coordinated outfit.” Ange says the young ones did well and also looked the part. “The kids were so cool, especially the little dude. He had some attitude too, which we loved.” When it came to picking a men’s winner, Ange says “the suit always wins.” Nelson Harness Racing Club says the whole weekend was a success this year. There were 10 harness races held on both Friday and Sunday, with the novelty races and the Fashion in the Field competition held on Sunday.

Richmond Bus services go further out into country Matt McCrorie Two new bus routes through Richmond will help to get the town moving, thanks to the efforts of Tasman District Council staff. In 2017 the Tasman District Council began looking into possible bus routes to expand the already existing Richmond – Nelson service. A Richmond bus loop was determined to be the most feasible option. The council has approved a budget, with partial NZTA funding, for a four-year trial. There will be two routes for the bus loop, an eastern route and a western loop. The eastern loop will largely serve the northern and eastern parts of Richmond, with the western loop covering the southern and western areas of Richmond. The eastern loop would have key stops along Washbourn Drive, Chelsea Avenue, Hill Street, Champion Road and

Salisbury Road, while the western loop would have stops along Lower Queen Street, Berryfield Drive, Gladstone Road, Bateup Road and Wensley Road. Tasman District Councillor Dana Wensley says that the two new bus loops are a huge step for Richmond. “This is really the first piece in our transport puzzle. As Richmond grows, we will have to change the way we move around. That includes more bus services, and better options for walking and cycling.” Dana says that congestion has been one of the key issues facing Richmond residents, and was a major concern in last year’s local body elections. The proposed bus loops would take between 15 and 25 minutes to complete and would be timed to arrive five minutes prior to the bus services departing to Nelson in the morning and depart 5 minutes after Nelson services

arrive in the afternoon. At this stage, council staff are working towards a start date in June 2020, with the aim of coordinating the start date with implementing a new electronic ticketing system. The total cost of the service is estimated at $200,000 a year, with bus fares making up 50 per cent of the funding, $51,000 coming from the New Zealand Transport Agency, and the remaining $49,000 coming from the council. One of the key considerations for planning the proposed routes was passing near retirement villages, as well as ensuring that travel times complement the RichmondNelson service. Dana says that the new service also aligns with the council’s obligations under the local government climate change declaration. “It’s the council’s role to show leadership, to step up and supply more active transport services,” she says.

Devastation was the word that came to mind when Flynn Drummond, operator of Action Indoor Sports in Richmond, recalls the fire last January that gutted his facility. Fire crews were called out on Sunday, 27 January at 3:30 pm to battle a blaze that started in Inflatable World, due a fault with one of the electrical blowers that inflate the attractions. For Flynn, whose family took over the business only months before the blaze, it was a lot to get his head around. “You go through the whole range of emotions. Obviously, it was devastating at first.” But what began as disappointment quickly turned into an opportunity. While the clean-up and the insurance process took time, Flynn says that ideas started to form. “Suddenly it was an opportunity. It gave us time to think about the layout and function of the

business, and how we could use the time to reconfigure things.” Flynn spent time travelling around the country to do research at similar operations. “We started looking at aspects of other centres that worked well and thought about how we could improve.” After a long, detailed project, the new facility is ready to go, almost exactly a year after the blaze gutted the centre. However, the centre, officially reopening today, will look quite different to how patrons may remember. An improved bowling alley, a brand-new American-themed diner, and virtual golf are just a few of the new additions to the improved facility. Flynn says the fire ended up being a good way to improve and redesign the facility. “We had some time to play with the layout, and make things a bit more functional.”

Thousands of drivers tested around the region Staff Reporter Over 8,000 drivers have been tested for drugs and alcohol use this month, as part of a largescale road policing operation in the Nelson and Tasman regions. Earlier this month, Nelson Bays and Canterbury Road Police Impairment Prevention Teams conducted checkpoints testing for alcohol and drug impairment around the Nelson

area, including on the highways and around popular summer destinations and beaches. As a result, ten drivers will be appearing in Nelson District Court over the coming weeks for driving with excess breath alcohol, each facing a minimum six-month disqualification along with a substantial fine. A further 11 drivers were handed instant $200 infringement notices and received 50 demerit points.

All 21 drivers received an immediate roadside suspension. “Tasman Police would like to thank the thousands of drivers stopped for their patience and cooperation while the checkpoints were in place,” says Senior Sergeant Grant Andrews. “Our focus is on the four main factors behind crashes restraints, impairment, distractions and speed. Grant says that people driving while impaired put themselves,

their passengers, and other road users at risk, with alcohol and/ or drugs a factor in about 20 percent of all fatal crashes. “If you are in any doubt at all about being safe or legal to drive due to impairment, don’t – it’s not worth it.” Officers are also frustrated with an increase in people speeding, with several drivers in recent days receiving roadside suspensions and facing court action.

House prices continue to rise in Tasman Staff reporter

House prices in the Tasman region are continuing to climb as values and asking prices push to record levels. According to QV, Tasman residential property values rose 4.4% in the year to December, and 1.1% over the past quarter. The average value in the Tasman District is now $615,286. Meanwhile, values in the Nelson region have continued to rise, up 6.2% year on year, and 1.5% over the past quarter. The average value in the city is now $638,842. Nelson and Bays region has had one of the biggest increases in average asking prices over the last year, with a jump of over 19 per cent. According to realestate.co.nz, Nelson and Bays has had an average asking price of $763,904

for December 2019, compared to $638,230 the previous December. Local water blasters help clean up cemeteries Susan Johnson It was a simple post on Facebook, seen as far away as Australia, that lead to the clean-up of the Wakapuaka Cemetery going ahead a lot faster. Local man Brian McIntyre started restoring the headstones in Wakapuaka Cemetery around four years ago. Now, joined by 12 other

volunteers, the group are working their way around 16,000 gravesites using wire brushes, sandpaper and even once, a denture brush. Realising that a water blaster would enable things to be done much faster, Brian put a post on Facebook at Christmas asking if anyone had an ‘unemployed water blaster he could use’. Brian couldn’t have been happier

with the response he got. Within days of being posted on Facebook, the message reached Jeff Neilson, who owns his own water blasting company. “My sister in Australia saw the post, rang me and said ‘you need to ring Brian and help them out with some water blasting at the cemetery,’” says Jeff, who provided the water blaster along with Grant Sutton from Water

Blaster Solutions. When the pair began to survey the site, they realised getting water was going to be a problem. Luckily, another helpful local offered the use of his outdoor tap, and they were good to go. The team quickly realised that this was a short-term solution due to the size of the cemetery, and Grant and Jeff agreed that Brian and his team would benefit

from having their own water blaster. Together, Grant and Jeff gifted them a brand-new one. Since then Brian has completed about 19 hours of work and it has been a huge help. “The brass plaques look magnificent, and the moss, dirt and lichen come off so easily,” he says. “It’s made a huge difference.”

Person of interest sought after Bay Dreams concert in Nelson On Saturday, 4 January 2020, between 10pm and 11pm, at the Bay Dreams Concert at Trafalgar Park in Nelson, a woman was indecently assaulted. The incident took place in front of the main stage among a large crowd of concert-goers who were enjoying the final band for the night. Police seek to identify a man who may be able to help with enquiries, who is described as aged in his mid-20s, 6ft to 6’3 (or 190cm) tall, of lean build with a sun-tanned complexion. According to police, the man was wearing a distinctive high visibility, orange mesh vest and he may have been with a group of similar-aged males. If anyone knows this man they are asked to share any information with Detective Neil Kitchen, Nelson CIB on (03) 546 3851.

Council on the lookout for Sundial vendor The Tasman District Council is on the lookout for someone to take over the Sundial Square Cart site.

The site was previously occupied by the Coffee Cart, which relocated to Buller in December. The site is currently vacant and the council are looking for expressions of interest to establish a mobile cart on this site. The council says that the main focus is to ensure it adds to the public’s positive experience of Sundial Square. The successful proposer(s) will be given a six month trial licence to occupy. The site will be available after 2 March 2020.

The council is advising swimmers to keep an eye out for algae during the summer months. If any algae is found the location is put on the council website so everyone knows which areas to be careful around. See tasman.govt. nz/link/toxic-algae. If there are extended periods of warm weather with slow river flows, algae is more likely to become toxic. This a natural process, but the mats of algae can produce toxins which are dangerous for children and pets. Council advises anyone who takes children or pets near the water to keep a close eye on them, to ensure they do not they do not interfer with, or eat, any algae.

Brightwater MarchFest returns bigger locals raising and better than ever funds for fires Staff reporter

While the fires blaze on over the ditch in Australia, some locals in Brightwater are doing their best to help out. Oliver Klotz and the rest of the team at The Loggers Shop & The Outdoor Store in Brightwater knew they could do something to lend a hand. “After juggling a few ideas around, we’ve decided to run a quiz down at the Sprig and Fern Brightwater.” Other local businesses have pitched in too, donating various prizes for a raffle. The event will be held at the Brightwater Sprig and Fern on January 23. “100% of the proceeds are going to the New South Wales Rural Fire Service who distribute it to other charities like SPCA, Red Cross and Salvation Army. It’s a great cause to get behind.” Oliver says that it will be $30 for a team of 6.

Now in its 13th year, MarchFest is spreading its wings at Founders Heritage Park, using more of the available spaces to create new and revitalised zones for the boutique beer festival. MarchFest has grown from its first foray at Founders Heritage Park with 400 attendees and four beers on offer, to attracting a crowd of up to 4,000 people, and generating over $3 million into the local economy. This year, the event will be held on Saturday 14 March, from noon until 9.30pm. It was started by friends Mic Dover and Eelco Boswijk in 2008. The pair say they wanted to create a boutique beer festival with a friendly vibe that welcomed women, families and ordinary beer drinkers, not just beer geeks. “We’re really proud that our original vision is alive and well, with a good cross-section of the community making it their ‘must do’ event every year,” says Mic. This MarchFest will see a new dedicated children’s area and

the event moving into a new grassed zone where tasting paddles of 5 beers will be available. With 15 beers available on the day, Mic says the tasting paddles allow people to sample more of the craft beers on offer. A live music line-up has always been a key feature of the event, with familiar names and some new up-beat acts. This year, Kiwi legends The Chills are headlining the event. The much-loved Dunedin band released a new album, Snow Bound, in 2018 to critical acclaim. Lead singer Martin Phillipps say, when his band performs at MarchFest, they’ll be in the midst of recording a new album, so festival goers may get a taste of some new tracks. Sustainability has also always been an important aspect of MarchFest. It is one of the few beer festivals to serve drinks in real glass rather than plastic cups and all stall holders serve food with recyclable plates, bowls and cutlery. This year, the MarchFest beer tokens are also biodegradable.

speedway proudly hosted the New Zealand Midget championship and it is still rated as one of the best meetings to ever have been held here as the Nelson track is well suited for this class so the racing this weekend should once again be top shelf with a lot of passing opportunities.

We have entries from Auckland, Palmerston North, Stratford, Christchurch, Dunedin and of course here in Nelson. As a bonus feature the kids (8 – 15 yr olds) in the Quarter Midgets will be making their first appearance of the season here in Nelson in a round of their South Island

series. This is a class that is really gaining momentum in New Zealand speedway and there is already a couple of cars here in Nelson that compete and is looking to gain traction as it’s a great way to get your kids into speedway.

Lifejacket campaign helps keep boaties safe Susan Johnson Keeping people safe on the water is important at this time of the year, and a nationwide campaign to provide safe lifejackets may even have saved a few lives. Earlier this month, boaties in the Nelson Tasman region had the opportunity to upgrade any old, damaged or worn out lifejackets for brand-new, at a heavily discounted price. Now in its sixth year, the Coastguard’s Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade is a nationwide campaign, and its goal is to keep as many New Zealanders as possible, safe while out on the water. People can bring in old lifejackets and swap them for new, fit-forpurpose Hutchwilco ones at a reduced price. Since the programme started, over 11,500 old lifejackets have been traded in and taken out of

circulation. Pete Kara, president of the Nelson coastguard unit, says that he’s thrilled to be associated with the campaign this year. “We want to ensure that the lifejackets are fit-forpurpose and safe to use. Kiwis are still drowning unnecessarily because they either aren’t wearing a lifejacket or because the one they have on is unsuitable for the activity they are doing,” he says. When the Old4New van was in Nelson on the 7th of January it sold over $8,000 worth of jackets in four hours and almost filled a trailer with old jackets. National title for Ben Smith Jacob Page The Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway Club is celebrating the success of Ben Smith who has become the first South Island driver to win the New Zealand Stock Car Championship. The two-day event, held at Greenstone Park Speedway in Greymouth over the weekend, attracted over 140 entrants. There had never been a South Island competitor on the podium in the previous 19 editions of the event, but with the support of several other Southern competitors, Smith won the title with

a three point margin. Ben was leading going into the final heat and was given a few early swipes by the Northern cars. But with club mate Keightley Teece riding shot gun and the help of a few other South Island drivers taking out the top Northern competition, he stayed out of trouble in the dying laps to win the title. It was to be Ben’s last year with other commitments looming but with the success of the weekend that may change. He qualified second of four in his group to advance to the

final heats, where his consistency proved the deciding factor as cars were rolled and smashed out of contention. Ben has been a regular visitor to the Greymouth track over the years and, with the support of his father Dale and family, there will be plenty of celebrating over the coming weeks. Ben becomes the club’s latest New Zealand champion, the last one being Shane Harwood in 2016 while former Waimea College student Jeremy Webb won the New Zealand TQ title for the third consecutive year a fortnight ago.

Wanderers warm third win thanks to Ingham hat-trick Jacob Page A hat-trick by Hayden Ingham helped propel Taylorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Wanderers-Motueka to a 40-run win over Wakatu in Nelson premier cricket. When the Wanderers and Motueka Cricket Clubs first discussed the possibility of entering a combined team in the Nelson Cricket Association premier competition for this season, a number of concerns were tabled. Both clubs had a long and proud history and wanted to provide premier opportunities for their young players, but with five players aged under-18, there were concerns over whether the team could be competitive at the top level of club play in the region. While the first three matches saw the team bowled out for under 100 on each occasion, resulting in comprehensive defeats, it is a testament to the group and the leadership within that has seen them regroup and display tenacity and resilience to then record three good wins. The latest victory on Saturday at Centennial Park Brightwater against Wakatu was further indication of the progress within the group, as strike bowler Jack White failed a fitness test and was unable to play. Batting first in superb conditions, Taylors Wanderers-Motueka struggled through to 176 with Dave Leonard top scoring on 52, with good contributions from Logan Ogilvie, again an excellent example of the age variance within the team and the healthy strength of purpose which exists between all players. In the run chase, Wakatu started well taking 19 runs off the first two overs but in the third over, Hayden Ingham produced three great balls in succession that almost determined the outcome there and then. With his first he had the dangerous Jason Campbell caught for 15, then second ball trapped Tom Argyle LBW, before clean bowling Brad Smith for A terrific hat-trick Wanderers-Motueka tight bowling eventually restricted Wakatu to 136. With the outstanding figures of four for 10, Ingham lead the attack, but Ogilvie completed a fine match with a spell of three for 42 off his

nine overs. Again, the combination between young and the young at heart was evident, and two run outs were an additional bonus.

Meanwhile the Taylors Wanderers second grade side defeated Garin College, batting first and making 260 before bowling the students out for 178.

This result sees Wanderers join Motueka, Wakatu, Waimea Toi Toi Red and Green and Stoke in the Top 6 category for the second round.

s w e N g n i h s Fi Dominik Berghamer The water in the bay is about 21 degrees at the moment which means that the snapper should be spawning instead of feeding. Interestingly, quite a few of them don’t seem to have gotten the memo. The catch rates slowed down a bit the week before Christmas but the fish never stopped biting and good hauls are still possible. The shallows hold lots of smaller (but still legal sized) fish, most of the larger ones are being caught between 12 and 30 metres. The snapper seem to concentrate on the western side of the Bay, most reports come from the Motueka and Kaiteriteri area. Very big specimen are amongst them, dozens of trophy fish close to or even over 20lbs have been caught over the last two weeks. Gurnard are a very common bycatch when fishing for snapper at the moment, they are very tasty and are great fun to catch,

especially when the rest of the fishing is slow. Kingfish are still around in good numbers and sizes, many of them taken around the spat farms. If they are not on the bite (and the visibility is good), jump in with a spear gun to improve your success rates! There have been reports of Albacore tuna being caught north of farewell spit which raises hope that they will arrive in the Bay soon. The odd pelagic seems to be here already, several blue sharks have been caught recently. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club committee members are busy organising the 2020 Big Blue Snapper Cup on March 7th, which will be bigger than ever. Conditions improve for Sea Swimmers Peter Gibbs The conditions seem to get better each week of the Port Nelson Sea Swim Series. In Thursday's races, 149 competitors completed triangular courses of 1250m or 500m. Most of the fast young swimmers had gone to Lake Taupo for the New Zealand Open Water Championships, so you’d expect the door to be wide open for some upsets. However, Luke Kelly, Oxford Bayley and Hayden Squance were leaning firmly on the door in the long race, shutting out the strong team from Aquagym in Linwood, Christchurch, who were holding their annual training camp here in Nelson and arrived in numbers. Aquagym swimmers dominated the short course over about 500m. In the long swim of 1250m, Louis Clark of Aquagym joined Luke, Hayden and Oxford in the lead bunch, heading into the current for a 600m slog south, before turning for a jet-propelled surge back to

the yacht club ramp via the dolphin. Luke and Louis led at this point, but took divergent courses, Luke and Oxford coming together at the final offshore buoy. Luke took it by a second from Oxford, with Louis 26 seconds back and Hayden right on his heels. Aquagym's Kiri Atkin squeaked into the top ten to claim the first women’s spot ahead of Flossie Van Dyke and Christina Harris, who headed to Taupo in the morning for the New Zealand Open Water Swim Championships. Aquagym swimmers dominated the short swim, although it was obvious they hadn’t listened closely to the briefing. The lead swimmers swam past the final buoy to a further marker and half the field followed them, but it didn’t affect the results, with Taylor Chamberlain, Ollie Lutton and Eli Wilson taking the first three spots ahead of Thomas McCallum and Victoria Ellis, the first female swimmer. In Taupo, Tasman club swimmers showed why the local sea swim series is the toughest in the country, with Alec Swan, Bendi Kepess and Fergus Drummond taking the top three spots in the 7.5km swim and Abbey Smale, Sierra Thomas and Sophie Alexander placing first, third and sixth in the women's section. Other races were littered with Tasman successes, including Isabella Thurlow's second place in F15-17 in the 2.5km championship. In the Open Epic Epic, Terry Bone and Christina Harris distinguished themselves in a select field, racing over 10km, 5km and 2.5km, with Terry fifth overall and Christina third woman, as she prepares for her February assault on the 22km Rottnest Island swim in sharkinfested waters off the coast of Western Australia.
