Second Bay Dreams deemed ‘perfect’ from PAGE 1 city handled everything really well. “Last year was a bit of a test but I feel this year we really nailed it. Everyone felt a lot more comfortable.” Starting at 12pm, a steady flow of punters streamed through the gates throughout the afternoon and into the evening, with many taking advantage of door sales - thanks to 5,000 extra tickets this year. Free water and sunscreen were available at the event and free buses were in service for ticket holders. Visitors praised the camping setup at Rutherford Park, although more than 60 tents were left behind which will packed up and sent overseas for refugees. Police, paramedics and fire crews had a heavy presence at the event

throughout the day and reported no major incidents. “The large crowd was generally well-behaved, and police are happy to report there were no major issues. Four people were arrested at the event for disorderly behaviour and have been spoken to,” says Senior Sergeant John Price. Emergency Manager at NMDHB Pete Kara said health services saw just over 500 people throughout the day with issues ranging from small cuts and exhaustion to overdoses, which was “as expected”. “Overall people were really looking after each other, the alcohol was well managed. We didn’t see the same number of casualties as last year.” The festival brought an impressive line-up of acts, with international superstar Tyler, The Creator, as headliner, alongside other international names including Skepta,

Yelawolf, Netsky, SASASAS and Ella Mai. There was plenty of Kiwi talent on show too, with Mako Road and Sons Of Zion kicking off the day. Shapeshifter opened the event at a warm-up party on Friday night, which saw more that 2,500 through the Trafalgar Centre doors. The event officially closed on Sunday with an after-party concert. Chair of Nelson City Council’s sport and recreation committee, councillor Tim Skinner, says he is “absolutely delighted” with how the event went. “The crowd was exceptionally well-behaved, and throughout the day I saw numerous examples of partygoers looking after their mates and being respectful to each other and to our city. "I’d like to thank all of the emergency services, event organisers

and volunteers - an event of this size takes a huge amount of planning and co-ordination and it really was a team effort.” Toby says while Nelson may be small, the city is a perfect candi-

date for a music festival. “The proximity of everything to the city is great - we’re really excited to bring it back again next year and hope to be here for the long haul.”

Punters streamed into Bay Dreams on Saturday to see some of the music scene’s biggest acts. Photo: Kate Russell

Images of last year’s fires loom large in the fire services’ mind this time of year. Photo: Evan Barnes

Fire crews on alert as risk increases

Staff reporter While Australia battles horrific bush fires across the Tasman, local crews are mindful of this time of the year closer to home. Last February, a spark from farm machinery caused a blaze that affected 2300ha of lands, destroyed one home and forced the evacuation of about 3000 people and 700 livestock and pets. Following that outbreak, fires flared up at Rabbit Island, Atawhai, Moutere Hill and Dovedale Hill, costing Fire and Emergency NZ about $13 million in total. With that in mind, principal rural fire officer Ian Reade is

urging locals to take extra care. “As the fire risk climbs and you are working or playing in the outdoors, take note of your surroundings.” He says grass is starting to dry out and has reached the point where in parts of the district at least 50 per cent is dead or dried out. “At the 50 per cent level a fire will carry through the grass on a warm dry day,” Ian says. “As the grass continues to dry the risk of ignition from sparks or hot surfaces such as exhaust pipes increases.” In early January, the fire danger is moderate on cooler, calm days and high on windy days. Already this year fire

crews have battled blazes in rural parts of the region. Ian says there are some things you can do to minimize your risk. “If it’s hot and dry and you are doing spark-hazardous work, do it in the morning when there is dew on the ground or late in the evening.” He says the riskiest time for an ignition is 11am through to 7pm when temperature is high and humidity is low. Nelson Tasman is in a restricted season meaning nearly all fires in the open air require a permit. To check out if you need a permit, and to apply for one, go to www.fireandemergency.nz.

Orange smoke haze causing increased 111 calls Police are asking people not to call the 111 emergency number to report the orange haze in the sky caused by the Australian bush fires. “While we appreciate these conditions may be causing concern, the 111 emergency number is for instances when: someone is breaking into your house, there is a car accident where people might be hurt, or cars are blocking the road, someone has been assaulted and the offender is still there, you are afraid for your safety and/ or for those around you, or you need an emergency Police response.

Body located in vehicle, Buller Gorge - Murchison Police recovered the body of a man located inside a vehicle in the Upper Buller Gorge area in Murchison, on December 24. The vehicle, located on Christmas Eve, was found down a cliff, about 100 metres from the Lyell Creek culvert. While formal identification is yet to take place, Police believe the man is the 71-year-old previously reported missing from Motueka.

Coastguard Raffle could bring summer cheer Staff Reporter A small outlay will see a few people celebrating later this summer when the national Coastguard fundraising Summer Lottery raffle is drawn. Coastguard Nelson members are out selling tickets around the region now and hope that a local will win some of the big prizes up for offer. While the raffle is a national one, $7 out of every $10 ticket sold in Nelson Tasman will go directly to Coastguard Nelson. That money will go towards the Coastguard Nelson efforts to buy a new vessel that will enable it to continue its mission of saving lives at sea. Coastguard Nelson has 30 volunteers and one rescue vessel, and between 1 July 2018 and 30th June 2019 they worked 4,697 hours. Their website provides information for boating saftey and education for all things nautical. Thanks to some amazing fundraising efforts from the

all-volunteer staffed team, and some very generous support from local people and businesses, Coastguard Nelson has achieved significant milestones towards its new vessel, however, public support is still needed to reach its goal. The raffle runs until 14 February 2020, and there are some high-quality prizes up for grabs, and 20 chances to win. First prize is a Ford Ranger XLT Double Cab Sport and Haines Hunter Sport boat and outboard motor, trailer and safety package valued at $117,500. Other prizes include another Haines Hunter Sport boat and outboard, a 5-star luxury Hawaiian holiday package, Weber Family BBQs valued at $1000 each, and $200 prezzy cards. Tickets will be on sale at the Nelson Market, outside Mitre 10 and also at the Motueka Sunday Market - so look out for the stand when you are out and about.

SUMMER IN A BOX

The Nelson Regional Sewerage Unit has purchased land near Bell Island, a joint venture between the Nelson City Council and the Tasman District Council. Photo: File.

Best Island land purchased for sewerage use Jacob Page The Nelson Regional Sewerage Business Unit (NRSBU) has agreed to purchase a 61 hectare block of land near Bell Island for $3.1 million. The property is located on Best Island, and is currently used for farming. The NRSBU identified the property as a strategic purchase when it was advertised for tender in November last year. Tasman District and Nelson City Councils, as joint owners of the NRSBU, gave approval to enter purchase negotiations. The end use of the land is still in the feasibility stage, however an increased area for the discharge of treated wastewater to land is one possibility. If considered feasible by the NRSBU, it would then need to apply for resource consents to incorporate any additional land within its land

disposal area. An application of this nature would be considered a fully discretionary activity and require public consultation. Chair of the NRSBU, councillor Kit Maling, says the purchase made sense. “This is a significant land purchase and offers a range of possibilities for future wastewater management and development. “It is a clear demonstration of the NRSBU and both Council’s real commitment to exploring possible alternative ways of dealing with wastewater discharge, over and above our current water reuse scheme.” After obtaining an independent valuation, the NRSBU purchased the property in an agreement which is jointly funded by both the Tasman District Council and the Nelson City Council. The land will pass into NRSBU ownership at the end of March 2020.

This year, Kai with Love got a little extra help, thanks to the efforts of the Richmond Aquatic Centre. Each year, the Aquatic centre puts on a themed week towards the end of December, as a way to give back to the local community. In 2019, the theme was “Christmas can can.” The centre asked people to bring an item of canned food to donate towards Kai with Love ahead of the holiday season. Crystal Gaiger, from the Aquatic Centre, said that Kai with Love was an obvious choice. “We had seen the work that they do, and we know Christmas is a hard time for a lot of people, so we thought we could help.”

Those in need over Christmas got a little extra help last year, thanks to the efforts of locals with a little extra to give. Kai with Love, a local non-profit organization that redistributes food into the hands of those who need it most, were the recipients of a fundraising effort from the Richmond Aquatic Centre just before Christmas last year. The charity group was formed in 2018, after local’s Steve Dunne and Abigail Packer saw a need in the area. They organise a food share afternoon once a week, as well as delivering food to families throughout the region.

Locals urge water safety this summer Matt McCrorie The warmer months are here, and one of the biggest concerns for the summer each year is around water safety. Lisa Stanley, Swim Magic team leader at the Richmond Aquatic Centre, says that no matter how often you swim, it’s important to be conscious about safety around all our waterways. “Children always need to be supervised. They should STOP and ask their adult if it is safe to go into the water. An adult should always be within arm’s length.” Tasman Police are also encouraging the public to be responsible when getting out on the water this summer, after two recent search and rescue incidents. “Boating, kayaking, swimming, diving and other water-related activities are popular during

summer but it is imperative people respect the water, be safety aware and always communicate their whereabouts,” says Tasman Police Search and Rescue Constable David Cogger. On Christmas Day, a person was reported missing in the Motueka River and a Search and Rescue operation commenced immediately involving the Tasman Bay Swift Water Rescue team, a local jet boat operator, Fire and Emergency NZ and Police volunteers. However, the missing person was later found to have returned home, having left the area without letting their friends know. “Search and rescue staff put their lives on the line when searching for people, and ultimately everyone out in the water needs to take responsibility for themselves and young ones, which means taking proper safety precautions and com-

municating,” says David. Police remind people heading out on the water to take some simple steps to protect themselves and others, and avoid emergency services being called out needlessly, like ensuring that boats are properly equipped, with proper life jackets and at least two forms of communication onboard, such as a cellphone and a VHS radio. Constable David Cogger also says it’s important to tell people where you are going and when you should be returning. “People heading out into the water also need to keep an eye on conditions and changes in weather, stay well within their abilities, treat the water with respect and caution, and avoid alcohol.” “Police want everyone enjoying themselves on the water this summer to stay safe, aware, and well-equipped.”

Higgins’ Community Craft Fair kicks off the New Year from page 1 Susan Johnson It was another succesful year for the Higgins Community Craft Fair, with locals turning up in droves to celebrate the New Year. For the second year running, on the 2nd of January, Higgins Heritage Park Steam Museum combined its opening with a community craft fair and judging by the turn-out it was very successful. There was a lot to do for anyone interested in checking out the fair. Higgins held displays of working machinery throughout the day, for those interested, and since that wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, there was a range of local craft stalls set up around the park. Handmade, locally produced art, clothing and crafts were all available as was plenty of food and drink to keep everyone well fuelled. But even those who came for the crafts would have been interested in some of the demonstrations the park put on, such as at the old sawmill. The parking was free, and for this day only entrance was a donation and the rides were free as well. “It’s a way for the Park to recognise and acknowledge the support of all our visitors who attend the Park during the year,” says Evie-Joy South, Higgins Park Administra

This includes Vintage small engines, Machinery & Tractors, the Rural Life Museum, the Historic Transport Museum with Vintage Trucks & associated vehicles, Pigeon Valley Steam Machinery Museum of steam engines & steam machinery, The Rover Car Club, the Army Group Centre (who provide living history displays & equipment), the Ray Win Collection of Jowett vehicles & speedway bikes, the Harry Holmwood Memorial Museum, a Vintage sawmill, Vintage Chainsaws & early logging collection, the Golden Downs Forestry Hut and two Model railways. A new ride which is proving very popular with the kids is The Honey Train. Named for the old honey barrels that riders sit in, they have been donated by Mountain Valley Honey in Wakefield. It’s called a community fair because the profits from the fair are donated to community groups in the region. Last year Wakefield library and the Anglican Church lunch fund for the elderly were two of the beneficiaries. The volunteer staff were plentiful and always happy to help with a smile, despite the heat. “This is a great place for the whole family, with something for everyone and a living model to our history,” says Evie.

Richmond Market Day brings another success Susan Johnson A great day for stall holders on Monday, 30th December for Market Day in Richmond. The weather was perfect with the sun shining and a light breeze. Stalls lined Richmond Street which was closed off for the event and spilled over into Sundial Square which also had a bouncy castle. Along with artisan stalls of air-dried meats and herbal teas, there were food stalls selling bacon buns and ice cream and buskers providing entertainment. And people, lots of people. Emma Heke on her stall of home-made herbal teas loves the market. “It’s my 5th

time here and I’ve sold a lot, so it’s well worth coming. The weather’s perfect, great location, lots of room on Queen Street for the stalls and the customers, it’s great, “she says. Charlotte Bidlake from Richmond Unlimited, organisers of the event, would like to thank everyone who came. “It was a stunning day with a huge variety of quality stalls and a fabulous turnout. We’re grateful for the help from the Richmond District Community Patrol who did an amazing job helping set up the stalls and EnviroWaste who donated the waste stations,” she says.

Summer Shakespeare returns this year with Romeo and Juliet Matt McCrorie

Local actors Finlay Langelaan and Georgia Chapple will take the stage as the star-crossed titular lovers in Nelson Summer Shakespeare’s production of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ later this month. Photo: Supplied.

One of the Bard’s greatest love stories will be making its way to the Tasman region this summer, with history’s greatest star-crossed lovers set to take the stage. Nelson Summer Shakespeare is returning next week, touring venues across the Nelson region with its production of ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Director Giles Burton says the 2018 production of ‘Twelfth Night’ was a significant success attracting more than 2200 people over 14 performances across four locations. “It attracted an incredibly diverse audience and delivered a fun, family outing, and for most, their first foray into Shakespeare’s rich library of works.” Building upon the strengths of previous Summer Shakespeare seasons, Giles says he has built a strong and professional ensemble which will offer everything from humour, heart-

Along with the fresh take on some of the more traditional gender roles of the play, Giles says the intention for the 2020 production is to build on previous years by adding two new venues in the form of Isel Park and the Theatre Royal. The young lovers are played by actors Finlay Langelaan and Georgia Chapple, both ex-Garin College students. They have both returned to Nelson to be part of presenting professional theatre in outdoor spaces in the region.

break and swordfights, which are sure to delight audiences. With a 6pm start, the outdoor performances operate on a ‘pay what you decide’ scheme, where audiences, meaning audience members can pay what they think the performance was worth. “The intention is to create a simple, yet magical event where families can experience high-quality arts performed by trained and experienced Shakespearean actors without the worry of excessive expense,” says Giles. Like previous years, the performances will be hosted in outdoor spaces, including Fairfield House in Nelson, Isel Park in Stoke, Washbourn Gardens in Richmond and Riverside Community Oval in Lower Moutere. “As well as adding to the region’s summer events for locals, it also provides access to affordable, professional arts for the large number of visitors who come to the region during January.”

Romeo and Juliet is on at Fairfield House, Nelson from 6pm on January 16 – 19 and 21 -24, before moving to Riverside for January 25 and 26. Then Richmond will play host to the performance on the 29 and 30th, before two performances in Isel Park on January 31 and February 1. A special seated performance will also be staged at Nelson’s Theatre Royal on Sunday 2 February.

Clarification:

On 18 December Waimea Weekly stated that there are plans to replant the Kingsland Forest behind Richmond with natives. Waimea Weekly wishes to clarify that both natives and exotics will be planted, and that there are several areas of the existing forest that are already home to natives.

Nelson’s Eddie Frans won the Donaldson Civil South Island Production Saloon title at Milestone Top of the South Speedway on Saturday night, it was the feature event on a busy night of titles up for grabs. The Production Saloon title was a late inclusion in the Nelson calendar. With strong fields most weeks, it was the locals who dominated with Cam Lankshear, Kaylim McNabb and Frans picking up wins. Lankshear and Frans were off the front row in the final, they battled for the first few laps but Lankshear’s option of the high line was his undoing, slipping back to 5th, with another local Vaughan Cornelius edging past into the second spot. Blenheim’s Brett Allen kept low to finish 3rd with Pam Nixon 4th, giving Nelson cars 4 out of 5 top spots. The Stock cars

were running their club champs, Keightley Teece’s season of hard knocks continued as he was left upside down again. Michael Paynter was another to have issues, a run-off was needed to decide the winner between local Ben Smith and Blenheim’s Wade Sweeting, a cat and mouse start was the go before the more experienced Smith outsmarted the younger driver. Round 2 of the T.Q club champs went the way of Morgan Frost, running away in the feature, a roll-over adding to the season tally. The Youth Ministocks continue to grow their numbers, two wins to Campbell McManaway with Blake Hearne picking up the other heat win and some intense racing from all the junior drivers. The Street Stock best pairs provided plenty of action, Bradley Evans and Neville Soper coming out victors from ex

Sarah Kitto was victorious in the Donaldson Civil demolition derby. Photo: Supplied NZ champions Simon Bland and Shannon Marr. The Demolition Derby ended a big night of racing. Ten Donaldson Civil-sponsored cars were involved with a nervous Sarah Kitto surviving the carnage to win the Derby. Dylan and Adam Hall were the sheriffs in

the stock cars and had their hands full when the Nell brothers, Brayden and Josh, decided to take on the sheriffs in their derby cars. Plenty of smoke and a few sparks kept the fire crews busy and the crowd on their toes, a great way to end a festive night of racing.

Husband and wife Carolyn and Charlie Squance were delighted to finish within seconds of each other in Thursday's Port Nelson Sea Swim. Photo: Sandra McGregor.

Sea swimmers compete against strong tide Peter Gibbs As the Port Nelson Sea Swim Series approaches the halfway point in the season, the distances are increasing, with Bendi Kepess taking line honours in Thursday's 1500m swim, the longest of the season so far. Hayden Squance set the early pace, rounding the dolphin narrowly ahead of a tight lead bunch. Fergus Drummond took over in a speedy, tideassisted leg to the southern mark. The 650m third leg of the triangle was a slog against the current and the increasing waves, with Luke Kelly taking the lead role until the Boat Shed, when Bendi Kepess put

in a spurt which took him to a narrow lead which he held to the end to win by a second from Luke. In the short swim over 500m, Samantha Wilson held off a field of 30 in a tight finish ahead of Olivia HuataFindlay, Corey Tremblay, Lily Claridge, Mia Langley and Ariah Bayley. Many swimmers will head to Taupo for Swimming NZ's Epic open water championships next weekend. For the younger swimmers there will be races over 5km and 7.5km, aiming for world championship qualification after the cancellation of the NSW Open Water Championships before Christmas. For 47-year-old Terry Bone and

56-year-old Christina Harris, it will be the challenge of the epic back-to -back races over 10km, 5km and 2.5km. At the same time, back in Nelson, swimmers will take on the 33rd annual Eyebright Mile a 2km swim from the Nelson Yacht Club to Tahuna Beach. With so much talent away in Taupo, it could come down to a race between this season's form swimmer Luke Kelly and Eyebright record holder Hayden Squance. Spectators will be able to follow the race from Rocks Rd, with start time at 11.55pm - right on the high tide - on Sunday January 12. Full information and results at nelsonseaswims.co.nz.

A smoky haze in the sky over the Monaco Peninsula blocked the sun from shining and made running conditions much more pleasant for the 13th annual Monaco 5 & 10 km races on New Years Day. For many of the 134 participants, this event provided them with the opportunity to ‘start the year the way they meant it to be’, having New Year resolutions to raise their fitness levels and so improve their health and well-being. However, for the seasoned runners, the competition was strong and some very fast times were recorded. In the 10km race, the first runner home was Angus Wemyss, 35.34mins, just 30 seconds ahead of Hayden Squance. Up-and-com-

ing young runner Matt Bowen came home in third place in an impressive time of 37.30mins. Julia Grant ran strongly to finish in 37.41mins and was the first woman home. Alan West, 71.14mins, was the clear winner in the walking section. In the 5km event, Josh Barry finished first in a fast time of 17.39mins, with Lizzie Thomas the first woman home in 23.17mins. Steve Pauling led the walkers home in 33.59mins. Race organizer, Stu Hague from Athletics Nelson, was delighted with the record turnout for the event, which raised a large sum of money to subsidise the travel costs of Nelson’s junior athletes to compete in events throughout New Zealand.

NMIT Viticulture and Winemaking graduate lands job at renowned Marlborough winery NMIT Viticulture and Winemaking graduate Lucy Tyrell is already making her mark on the industry, working at one of Marlborough’s most highly-regarded wineries. Lucy graduated in 2019 and is currently working full-time as a cellar hand at Yealands Estate. “I am still continually learning the practicalities of being a cellar hand every day while linking the deeper knowledge I learnt through the course,” Lucy says. Lucy was drawn to studying Viticulture and Winemaking NMIT as it combines three of her interests - science, art and problemsolving. Marlborough is at the forefront of New Zealand’s wine industry growth, which makes NMIT’s Marlborough campus the perfect place to study. The facilities are world-class and students get to visit some of the country’s most prestigious wineries and learn first-hand from award-winning winemakers. Lucy had the opportunity to work part-time during her studies, gaining experience in the

cellar door, in the vineyard during summer, and in the winery during the vintage. Getting that real-world experience helped her to “solidify the theory learnt in class,” she says. “Studying has introduced me to the wine industry and it’s nice to meet people that have a similar passion for viticulture and winemaking. “The discussions had about the worldwide wine industry and all the people I have met, both in Marlborough and from overseas, has led me to conclude that there are so many different aspects to the wine industry - so many different people with opinions, dreams and goals. But there is a place for everyone.” Lucy says that studying at NMIT has provided her with valuable life and work experience, which has already led to her taking an impressive first step in her career. Upcoming maritime events The Harbourmaster has (or may soon) grant authorisations for the following events. These events may affect public use of the maritime area for a certain period of time. Event activity: Tata Islands swimming races Date and location: 11 January 2020, between Ngawhiti Island and Tata Beach Event activity: Cardboard boat race Date and location: 25 January 2020, Tata Beach/Ligar Inlet More information about the Harbourmaster’s directions for events is available at tasman.govt.nz/link/maritime-events.

Consultation closes 31 March 2020. We’re reviewing the way we manage Moutere/Waimea Ward parks and reserves, and we need your help to make sure these public spaces suit locals and visitors now and in the future. The most important thing we want to know is: What’s your vision for their future? Have your say: Visit tasman.govt.nz/feedback for more information.

What’s the future for Kingsland Forest? Consultation closes 6 March 2020. We’re proposing to gradually retire Kingsland Forest from commercial forestry operations as plantation forestry blocks mature and are harvested over the next 20 years. We're considering replanting in a mix of native and permanent exotic trees, allowing us to progressively improve recreational tracks and facilities over time. Have your say: We want to know what you think of the draft Kingsland Forest Development Plan. More information is available online at tasman.govt.nz/ feedback, and at Council offices and libraries.
