Love’s All About Taking A Chance

When you think about it, a hundred things could go wrong when you encounter the one you’re going to love. You might show interest and be rebuffed. You could make an embarrassing slip of the tongue—or suddenly drop something, in clumsy and uncool fashion. There are horrible possibilities! Little wonder, then, that on finishing her chicken wings Susan simply walked out of the sports bar without stopping to greet that boy she liked.

“My brother said to go back and say hi,” she reports, “but I was too nervous.” The wings weren’t the only thing that was chicken.

But you’ll be relieved to learn, in “How Love Found Us” on page 30, that Susan and Mike managed to get together after all. They’ve been married 23 years now, so it all worked out. Once again, BERGEN celebrates Valentine’s Day by inviting a dozen couples in the county to share the stories of how they found each other— and love. You’ll find their tales full of humor, coincidence and feelings you can relate to—like Susan’s nervousness.

A word, though, to those who are currently in between happy endings. Read these stories with hope, not envy. It’s never too late to find someone. And if you are feeling lonely this Valentine’s, don’t feel like the Alone Ranger. There’s a lot of that going around. As we learn in our Special Report on loneliness (page 42), it’s not just romance that’s on the fritz for many of us. Friendships have frayed, and get-togethers have come apart. The pandemic made us all hunker down, and some of us haven’t unhunkered.

Fortunately, a little effort can still create a rich life that’s full of many things—and many people. Call up a friend or two and suggest a get-together for National Drink Wine Day on the 18th—on page 17 we share six great places to meet for that occasion. Plan a cold-weather walk with a buddy that will do your heart good, literally. (On page 28 we discuss winter’s special challenges to cardiac health.) Schedule a Bourbon Street-style outing for Mardi Gras (page 15). And even though today’s impersonal tech threatens to pull us apart, it can also connect us. Read on page 16 how a volunteer organization called Helper Bears hooked a 94-year-old up with an iPhone and the savvy to use it, to her delight, to reach out to family and friends.

Alan and Tom, a first-date couple in this month’s love stories, found they had something in common—besides, obviously, being the same gender. Each one had a friend poised at the ready to call and interrupt with an “emergency” in case the date went south. That’s how uncertain they were. But they took a chance—and it paid off. They’re happily together now too. My wish for you this February is that, in whatever way works for you, you’ll give happiness a chance. Enjoy!

BOURBON STREET IN BERGEN

Wishing you were in New Orleans for Mardi Gras? Let’s be real: The best part of N’awlins fun is the food, and there are several Mardi Gras-inspired options here in our county:

• Cap’t Loui (210 Main St., Fort Lee, 201.461.7080; captloui. com) creates memorable seafood boils, but don’t overlook its jambalaya. The classic stew, packed with spicy flavor and served with rice, includes chicken and andouille sausage.

• Grand Lux Café (1 Garden State Plaza, Paramus, 201.909.0399; grandluxcafe. com) has several desserts on its menu, but we recommend the New Orleans beignets. These sweet delights are baked to order, tossed with powdered sugar and served with three sauces. (We can’t resist the chocolate sauce!)

• Hook & Reel (100 Broadway, Elmwood Park, 201.367.1858; hookreel.com) is a casual eatery that specializes in seafood boils and has a selection of po’ boy sandwiches that always hit the spot. Options include catfish, flounder, shrimp and chicken.

• Stern and Bow (171 Schraalenburgh Rd., Closter, 201.750.3350; sternandbow restaurant.com) is known for its seasonal menu, but the New Orleans gumbo is a staple and a local favorite. The traditional stew is filled with rice, veggies, smoked sausage, chicken and shrimp.

NEVER TOO LATE FOR TECH

For the snail-mail generation, using modern technology to send greetings electronically can be daunting. On Valentine’s Day, for instance, a senior citizen may wish to send an electronic card (it is, after all, the second-busiest day for e-cards, according to American Greetings) but may not know where to start. The Englewood-based Helper Bears program bridges the technology gap for older adults by improving their digital literacy skills.

“Using technology helps connect family and friends,” says Violet Sudol, Helper Bears’s founder and CEO. “We had a 94-year-old family friend who only had an old flip phone. We got her an iPhone and taught her how to use it—and saw how much joy it brought her.”

Helper Bears partners with nonprofits and large organizations to provide tech training and device advice. Topics run the gamut: online safety and security, setting up and maintaining email accounts, posting and editing social media content, using apps like TikTok and voice assistants and more. People participate at no cost through local senior centers as well as groups like Bergen Family Center, The Community Chest of Englewood and Age-Friendly Englewood. Sudol says Helper Bears will soon provide one-on-one sessions.

“These days, not being able to connect digitally has side effects, like feelings of loneliness and isolation,” says Sudol. “Knowing how to use technology can make a world of a difference for someone who is homebound.”

KUDOS TO…

…Dylan Harper of Franklin Lakes, a freshman member of the Rutgers University men’s basketball team. In December, Harper was named March Madness National Player of the Week and Big Ten Player of the Week (the second time he’d won that award in 2024–25) after hitting a game-winning three-pointer against Seton Hall. Earlier in the week, Harper, 18, scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the Scarlet Knights’s win over Penn State.

…Jake Schwartzer of Glen Rock, who raised nearly $2,000 to support the nonprofit Swim Across America. As part of his bar mitzvah project last fall, Schwartzer, 12, raised funds through the Northern Dutchess Aquatic Club’s Swim Against Cancer event at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.

…William Munoz of Hasbrouck Heights, who rolled a perfect game for the Hasbrouck Heights High School bowling team. The senior bowler’s 300 came in the Aviators’s December win over Harrison. It was Munoz’s second perfect game, and his first in North Jersey Interscholastic Conference play.

PUPPY LOVE

Dog: Leo, 10-month-old mini-Bernedoodle

Owners: The Riedel family of Washington Township

For years the Riedels believed their schedules were too busy to share with a four-legged friend. The sentiment changed when several family friends, all volunteers at Tenafly-based PetResQ, met Leo. They knew right away that this sweet-tempered pup would fit right in with the Riedels, and they set up a meeting between them. That’s when the family immediately fell in love, reports mom Kelly Riedel.

While Leo has fully embraced his new family, he’s still learning to relax around strangers. In particular, he dislikes neighborhood delivery drivers who come to the house with packages—which made the holiday season, when they were frequent visitors, a challenge. Leo, however, does enjoy eating mini pancakes for breakfast, and his favorite treats come from Westwood Pets. He has visited baseball fields all over the county, particularly Westvale Park and Pascack Brook County Park in Westwood and Clark Field in Washington Township, watching his human “brothers” play sports. Leo doesn’t want to miss out on anything—he’s always eager to jump in the car and ride along with his family.

Says Kelly Riedel: “Leo certainly brings life to our home and love to our family.”

Sushi in Bergen County gets an upgrade with Rutherford’s newly opened Butterfish. Michelin-starred chef Jeffry Undiarto (known for his “sushi perfection”) is part of the team and brings that talent to every bite and roll crafted here. The menu includes omakase-style options, à la carte dining and innovative mocktails (with flavors like cherry blossom and lychee). Don’t have time to sit down? There’s also a take-out menu.

In Hasbrouck Heights, the aptly named Heights Burger serves up its namesake in style. The treats don’t end there: Fantastic hot dogs, Philly cheesesteaks and fries with all the fixings also are on the menu.

THE CUTTING EDGE

A new option for pizza, pasta and all your Italian favorites is now open in Fort Lee. At Edge Pizza and Pasta, you can pick up pizza by the slice or by the pie, classic appetizers like mozzarella sticks and entrées large enough to share. For lunch, you can also grab a calzone or a hot sandwich on focaccia bread. (One with truffle honey, anyone?) If you still have room for dessert, try the cannoli or tiramisu.

Cat: Jeter, 5-year-old domestic shorthair Owner: Michael Corsica of Hasbrouck The global pandemic hit just two months first apartment, so the then-28-year-old was feeling lonely and isolated. The solution: Adopt a cat. After searching online databases of adoptable animals, he fell in love with and eventually brought home a cat named Brady from a Rockland County, N.Y., animal shelter. Brady was quickly renamed Jeter in honor of Corsica’s favorite baseball player, and the bond between owner and pet developed with equal speed. “Jete settled in very fast,” Corsica says. “He seemed to know exactly which couch cushion to claim and wasn’t afraid to explore tabletops and counters.” Four years later, Corsica and Jeter are quite the tandem. “I work from home, so we’re together 24/7,” he says. “He loves chasing feather toys and jingle balls, but his favorite toy is the string from one of my old, hooded sweatshirts. Even when I’m sitting in front of my computer, he’s always next to me, pawing at my arm so I play with him.”

SNACK SMARTER

When you’re watching the big game or bingeing on your favorite TV show, pause before reaching for a bag of salty chips or bottle of sugary soda. (Don’t derail your resolution to eat healthy!) Snacking is inevitable for most of us, and that’s just fine, but why not eat something that’s delicious and good for the body? Below are a few ideas and suggestions for game-day (or anytime) substitutions:

• Rhythm organic kale chips instead of potato chips. These chips are made from kale and sunflower seeds, which are two high-nutrient, high-fiber, powerhouse foods.

• The Good Bean’s black bean chips instead of tortilla chips. Who doesn’t love chips and dip? You may love them more by switching your chip. Instead of snacking on refined grains, which can leave you hungry, opt for these black bean chips. These chips are made from black beans, which are a great source of plantbased protein and fiber.

• Greek yogurt with frozen berries instead of “fruit-on-thebottom” yogurt. Fruit-flavored yogurts may sound healthy, but many are loaded with sugar. Frozen fruits and veggies have the same nutrient content and benefits as fresh. In addition, choosing organic fruits will ensure there are no added ingredients. Besides yogurt, frozen berries can easily be added to smoothies or oats—or eaten right out of the freezer.

• Almonds and walnuts instead of granola bars. Many packaged granola and protein bars are sugar-filled. Natural almonds and walnuts are high in protein, and they contain antioxidants that can help reduce inflammation in the body.

BLACK HISTORY IN BERGEN

Every February since 1970, our country has paused to reflect on African Americans’s role in its past by marking Black History Month. There’s a theme each year—2025’s is “African Americans and Labor.” Our county has been the site of many important events in Black history and the fight for civil rights:

• 1920–1950: The Garfield Colored Giants play in the New Jersey Semi-Professional Negro Baseball League, where Black baseball players could play while the Major League was still largely segregated (even after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947). They won the championship in 1949.

• 1964: Teaneck becomes the nation’s first town in a white-majority area to integrate its schools through a vote.

• 1965: Englewood native Arnold E. Brown becomes the first Black man elected to represent Bergen County in the New Jersey Legislature. He begins work to desegregate the rest of Bergen’s schools.

• 1971: Lee Porter becomes the executive director of the Hackensack-based Fair Housing Council of Northern New Jersey, a position she holds to this day. Called the “Mother of Fair Housing,” she continues to fight for housing rights for marginalized communities.

• 2018: Anthony Cureton, a former Englewood police officer and head of the Bergen County chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), is elected and sworn in as Bergen County Sheriff, becoming the first Black person to hold the position.

• 2021: After working for years as a narcotics detective, in the Special Victims Unit and in the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Jason Love becomes the first Black to be sworn in as chief detective of Bergen County.

Talk about your American Dream story. Born in Cali, Colombia, Danilo Melan moved to the United States at 25 after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in business from Santiago De Cali University—and working during his college years as a dancer and choreographer, specializing in salsa. He landed in New Jersey and lived with a cousin until he could support himself, working as a waiter, a car wash attendant and a laundry employee while perfecting his English.

Now 34, the Maywood resident is the program director at the Rutherford-based Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey (SHCCNJ), an organization dedicated to fostering, mentoring and training entrepreneurs with Hispanic-owned businesses in New Jersey. Melan lives with his wife, Daniela, an environmental engineer and a fellow Colombian immigrant. Together they are dedicated to opening doors for other immigrants.

What was your immigration experience like?

When I was 25, I made the decision to move to the United States. It was motivated by my cousin, who lived in Texas. However, because I didn’t speak English at the time, I recognized that New Jersey would be a more welcoming place for me than Texas. New Jersey’s diverse population made it a perfect fit for my fresh start. In my early years, I worked multiple jobs to support myself while I learned English. I worked in a car wash, a restaurant, a laundry and more, all while attending Bergen Community College (BCC) to take English classes. What was the most difficult part?

Being away from my family in Colombia—though over time I’ve been fortunate enough to bring my mother here to visit, and several other family members have had that opportunity as well. Another challenge was improving my technical English skills enough to meet the demands of professional positions here. Despite holding a bachelor’s degree, I still encountered the language barrier that many

immigrants face. However, I truly view these challenges not as obstacles, but as areas for growth and development. Each one has been a stepping stone to help me become stronger and more resourceful. Tell us about your journey with SHCCNJ. Through BCC, I volunteered at networking events hosted by SHCCNJ. I met the staff, which eventually led to a position where I worked a few hours each week. I was mostly filing documents and making phone calls to members. I knew that, even with my bachelor’s degree, I was coming in with a disadvantage because of my English. I made myself available to do the jobs other’s didn’t want to do, and that opened up a lot of doors for me. I was patient.That evolved into part-time work, and eventually a full-time position.

Why are organizations like SHCCNJ important? Because they help people succeed, particularly those in new immigrant communities in need of assistance. We open doors to opportunities that many minority groups may not know how to access. SHCCNJ creates a space for growth and empowerment for those who need it most. The organization also serves as the voice for those often underrepresented.

A project you’re proud of?

We partnered with the New Jersey Manufacturing Extension Program (NJMEP) to offer no-cost training for people seeking a career in manufacturing. We’ve had outstanding results, and this initiative has expanded to include additional projects, such as providing support to veterans and their families.

Tell us about your dance career.

Cali, where I was born, is often referred to as “the salsa capital of the world.” Almost everyone attends a dance school from an early age. I was fortunate to be part of a professional dance team as a teenager. I was able to travel around the world through dance.

A favorite moment from that time of your life?

I was selected to join a dance company that traveled across Asia and Europe for several months specifically to represent Colombian culture. We performed in China, and kids from a school in Beijing were there. It was like we were famous. They wanted us to sign things. I didn’t expect that. I’m from a city where ever yone dances, so it’s almost common to me. That was the first time I realized the impact we made.

Do you still dance?

I no longer dance professionally, but I still enjoy dancing socially as a way to relieve stress—it’s a great form of therapy and an excellent way to exercise.

What makes Bergen County special?

It’s an incredibly diverse place. It’s a community where you can meet humble, hard-working people from all different backgrounds and countries, all striving for success. This sense of shared ambition is one of the things I love most about living here.

Any advice?

Work hard, remain consistent and you’ll achieve any goal you set for yourself. Sometimes things don’t happen when we expect them to, but patience is key. Don’t ever feel like you’re not worthy.

This Season Of The Heart

WINTER BRINGS CARDIAC RISKS THAT CALL FOR SPECIAL PRUDENCE, TWO BERGEN DOCTORS EXPLAIN.

The phrase “winter blues” usually refers to matters of the metaphorical heart, but make no mistake: The coldest season can spell trouble for your literal ticker as well. Freezing winter weather and its consequences, including both a sedentary, indoor life and the sudden exertion required to shovel heavy snow, can increase your risk of a cardiac episode.

“When it’s cold, your blood vessels can constrict as a way of centralizing the blood to keep your internal organs perfused with blood flow,” explains Vladimir Joseph, M.D., a cardiologist with Hackensack Meridian Health in Hackensack.

“The blood vessels in your extremities—your legs, your hands—constrict, bringing blood flow back to the heart. If you have underlying heart disease, this puts an increased stress on the heart, because your blood pressure increases.”

This blood-pressure hike can be especially problematic for some, says Ernest Chang, M.D., a cardiologist with Valley Health System. “If you have a preexisting condition like hypertension, high cholesterol or diabetes, that increase in blood pressure can cause extra stress to the heart. Even if your blood pressure is controlled at baseline, cold weather can increase it and cause symptoms such as lightheadedness, chest

pressure and shortness of breath.”

This can become a particular problem after a heavy snowstorm, when many people’s natural response is to head outside and shovel driveways and sidewalks. More

than a chilly inconvenience, this chore can put certain people’s lives at risk. The strain of heavy labor, combined with the above-mentioned vasoconstriction and the added weight of protective clothes, can trigger the formation of a blood clot that blocks the artery and causes a heart attack.

“Shoveling snow is a very strenuous physical activity,” says Dr. Joseph. “The exertion is intense, and this is compounded by the fact that a lot of people don’t get regular exercise. For people who also have an underlying heart disease, there is an increased risk for cardiac events.”

“You don’t need to stay away from shoveling snow altogether,” says Dr. Chang. “But always dress warmly and take your time. It’s not a race. And if you can’t do it yourself, hire professionals so you don’t overexert yourself in the cold.”

“Underlying risk factors may be undiagnosed or underdiagnosed,” says Dr. Joseph, “because a lot of conditions, such as high blood pressure and coronary disease, can be asymptomatic. People feel like they’re healthy, but they’re not. And when you add that perfect combination of factors, it can lead to events.”

Snowy conditions can also delay lifesaving medical care. Ambulances and other emergency medical services often must travel more slowly, like the doctors and other professionals who need to attend the patient. With a heart attack, explains Dr. Joseph, “Time is muscle,” meaning that every second after the event represents damage being done to that cardiac muscle. Snow takes a bad situation and makes it worse.

But you can take steps to reduce the danger, the doctors say:

• Stay (safely) active. “Make sure you’re getting the recommended amount of exercise [the American Heart Association suggests 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week], and remember to do it consistently,” says Dr. Joseph. “I find, when talking to patients, that people treat winter like a true hibernation period. They don’t exercise as

much. You don’t need to go out into the cold, but going to the gym or increasing the walking you do at work can make a huge difference.”

• Remember other risks. Any health burden is a heart burden, especially infection. “A viral infection can cause a generalized inflammation, and inflammation can cause heart injuries,” says Dr. Chang. “Patients with existing conditions, such as high blood pressure, historic heart failure or atrial fibrillation, are particularly susceptible to infection with COVID, colds, flu and RSV [respiratory syncytial virus]. It can make heart symptoms worse. It’s never too late to get a flu shot, a COVID vaccine or an RSV vaccine.” To further protect against these viruses, wash your hands regularly with soap for at least 20 seconds. Dry, cracked skin can lead to open portals for germs into the body, so hand lotion is a must as well. A full night’s rest will help your body fight off illnesses. And, Dr. Joseph stresses, listening to your body and getting tested by your doctor is essential. “If you do have symptoms, don’t dismiss them. Have a very low threshold for getting evaluated. Find a doctor you trust and get regular checkups.”

• Know signs of trouble. The first step to surviving a heart attack is identifying that you are experiencing one, and getting help as fast as possible. Familiarize yourself with the symptoms, both common and uncommon. Dr. Joseph explains, “The classic symptom of a heart attack is acute-onset chest discomfort. It’s usually a dull pain. It will worsen with exertion and improve with rest. It’s also associated with shortness of breath and sweating. The pain often radiates—it can go up to the extremities, your back and your jaw.” The more uncommon symptoms, the doctor says, “we see more in diabetics, women and the elderly. They sometimes experience shortness of breath, indigestion, nausea and vomiting and other gastrointestinal symptoms. They may also experience unusual tiredness and fatigue.”

He also says: “It’s always better to err on the side of caution and get any symptoms evaluated right away. If you think you are having a heart attack, call 911 and get to your nearest emergency room as fast as possible.”

DARIUS WHEELER AND ROBERT BANNON, LEONIA:

“I, born and raised in Ridgefield Park, had just released a new album entitled Unfinished Business On it was a song called ‘I Think He Knew.’ The song became a Pride anthem, and the video went viral—it was about parents accepting their sons. Well, all the way in Detroit, Michigan, Darius Wheeler was planning and booking acts for Motor City Pride, Michigan’s largest Pride event, with over 60K attendees a year.

“After Darius saw the video, he reached out to my publicist, Angela Thomas, to inquire about me going to Detroit to perform. As Angela wrote in an email to me, ‘He seems to be the real deal. You should go!’ Well, I went. Darius set me up with a car service, accommodations—he rolled out the red carpet. When I met him, there was as an undeniable spark.

Darius has an energy about him that is a magnet. At first you see his tall, beautiful self, but then you talk to him and see his spirit, heart and care for the ones he loves, I am incredibly lucky!

“After I performed my set of music, Darius asked me to grab a quick dinner at a local downtown Detroit staple, the Checker Bar. That dinner turned into four hours of walking around downtown Detroit, talking about life, dreams and aspirations. It was a little over a year later that we officially became a couple.

“On New Year’s Eve 2023, Darius asked me to be his forever person in Christmas Village, blocks away from our first date walking downtown. Where did we ring in the new year? Why, the Checker Bar, of course!

“Our New Jersey wedding is set for 5/25/25.”

STEPHANIE AND SHADNER LOISEAU, LEONIA:

“We met in the most unexpected place—a nightclub. It was a girls’ night out. I noticed him standing near the bar. He wasn’t trying to stand out, just sipping his drink with a calm confidence that immediately caught my attention.

“My girlfriend dared me to approach him. Normally, I’d brush it off, but something about that night—and him—felt different.

“We spent what felt like hours talking. By the end of the evening, I handed him my number and said, ‘I made the first move. Now it’s your turn.’ He called the very next day, and the rest is history.”

HEATHER AND MICHAEL CORRIGAN, ORADELL:

“We met at the old Houlihan’s on Wall Street in NYC. Mike worked as a paralegal in a law firm. I had just graduated from Fashion Institute of Technology and was a buyer at Century 21 department store right across the street from Houlihan’s. I was there with my crew from the store and he was there with his work pals. His friend Selwyn said, ‘What do you see when you look in her eyes?’ meaning me, and he said, ‘A beautiful lady!’ I usually would not fall for this but I did. He was actually dating another girl at the time, but he went home and told his mom all about me.

“Then I was in a very bad car accident the next night. He came to my bedside, dumped the other girl and the rest is history. We went through a lot, me being Jewish from Long Island and Mike Irish Catholic from the Bronx. We were married at the New York Botanical Garden in 2004 by a lady rabbi. We had a chuppah and a unity candle. Mike later converted around the time of our son’s bar mitzvah. Both our kids had bar/bat mitzvahs that were unique— our daughter’s with a Spider-Man theme, and our son’s in a cool loft with New York Giants football player Stephen Baker, ‘the touchdown maker.’

“Now, 30 years later, the kids are doing great, Mike runs the prepared food section at Whole Foods in Paramus and is a pharmaceutical rep, and I’m ‘Heather the Hurricane,’ a Realtor. We’re the best team!”

LYNDA AND JOHN MAMONE, FRANKLIN LAKES:

“Our story sounds make-believe, but it’s true. I’d just graduated in June from Boonton High School and was hired by Bamberger’s at Willowbrook Mall starting in September. The first time I noticed ‘him’ riding the escalator, I told my family I saw my future husband. In December, he asked me to dinner in NYC, and on our first date I knew he was the one. (By the way, at dinner he told me he would never get married!)

“He had a military obligation and would be leaving in January for Officers Candidate School. John, my husband for 56 years, asked me to marry him nine days after I met him. In the picture above we are celebrating John’s 80th birthday, 9/11/2024. We have three sons, two wonderful daughters-in-law and two amazing, loving granddaughters.”

PEMA CHEN AND KEN SUCHOSKI, TENAFLY:

“My husband and I met on Bumble, a dating app. I asked Ken to go skydiving, and while we didn’t go as a first date, we went for his birthday a few months later.

“I thought he was cute, and I liked that he kept texting me and even suggested a phone call before we met. We met at a Vietnamese restaurant, Mamak, for our first date. The funny thing is, I thought Ken didn’t want to pay for the meal because he left the check next to him for quite a while. So I offered to pay. Turns out he didn’t want the date to end and was worried we’d get rushed out of the restaurant if he paid. We repeat our first date every year for our anniversary.

“Our most dramatic date was our fifth. We went to The Smith, a boothstyle restaurant where everyone is crammed together like sardines. I had a couple of drinks and because of my low blood pressure, I blacked out and fell over onto the lap of an elderly lady next to me (luckily, a retired nurse!) and ended up going to the hospital. I thought Ken was going to leave me in the hospital, but he stayed overnight and then took me home and made me tea. I knew he was a keeper. In 2025 we’ll have been together 10 years.”

DAWN AND RICK MARSHALL, TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON:

“I was lucky enough to marry the guy I fell head over heels for when I was 16—although it took years. A new restaurant named Just Alan’s had opened in Harrington Park. I was hired as the coat check girl, and a boy named Ricky Marshall (who stole my heart, although he didn’t know I was alive) was a busboy. We worked together until the warm weather came, and there was no longer a need for a coat check girl. But my older sister was a waitress there, so I was still able to see and somewhat socialize with this adorable busboy.

“A few years went by, both of us dating others, and by 1982 we were official! But we would be an ‘on again, off again’ couple for the first few years. It seemed every late spring we would slowly stop talking and by fall we would pick up right where we left off. By 1987 we found our groove and became a serious couple. We were married in March of 1990, and had our twins in March of 1993. Our third child was born in 1995.

“Life wasn’t always easy, but we made it work. Rick’s mom had MS and was wheelchair- bound since Rick was in his teens. She needed him more than most moms, as his dad traveled a lot for work. He never minded, and neither did I, as that is what you do for family. When our twins were born, one of them had life-threatening health issues and was whisked away into Manhattan for the first of 13 surgeries, all by the time he was two-and-a-half. The stress of worrying if our child would be OK took a toll on us, but as my mother once told me, ‘This is what makes a marriage a marriage. Not all happy times and fun, but the hard times you can make it through.’

“Those words of wisdom have always stayed with me. We laugh through as much as we can. We have taught our children (all boys) how to be good caring men, and to not take everything too seriously.

“I often tease Rick that it was ‘love at first sight’ for me, and he never stood a chance of not marrying me! I thank God every day for this wonderful man. Sometimes the wait is truly worth it. Here we are, 42 years later, still happily married. When people ask what’s our secret, we always say, ‘keeping your sense of humor, and laughing with each other every day.’”

TOM ALOISE AND ALAN CHORM, WALDWICK:

“Our love story didn’t begin with fireworks or grand gestures, or even with a second glance at the bar. It started virtually, with a swipe right and a matching profile on a dating app.

“We both lived nearby, so we quickly agreed to meet for a drink at the Baccarat Hotel in NYC. We each had our exit strategies: I was counting on my friend Billie to call in a fake emergency, and Tom had Emily on standby with the same plan.

“What followed was—a bit awkward, to say the least. We each ordered a martini, and while Tom, the eternal optimist, powered through his, I couldn’t finish mine. In what seemed like a perfectly casual gesture, I slid my drink across the table to Tom. And that was it—the moment we both realized: Maybe this could work—if Tom was always there to finish my martinis.

“I was fresh out of a complicated breakup, and admittedly a bit guarded. My skepticism wasn’t just about relationships—it was also about the whole ‘dating someone from New Jersey’ thing. I’d lived my entire life in New York City, and the idea of settling down anywhere outside the city limits? Unthinkable. But Tom wasn’t going to let that deter him. He was convinced from the moment they met that I was the one.

“Over the next few months, we spent more time together, including weekends in New Jersey with Tom’s family, which, surprisingly, I found charming. We both loved animals, so it was no surprise that among the things that first drew us together were my adorable but slightly spoiled dog Alfie and his two mischievous Bengal cats, Atticus and Luci. Tom had a collection of pets as well growing up.

“Still, I wasn’t ready to give up the bustle of NYC and the convenience of walking everywhere. But Tom wasn’t backing down. He had a Volvo, a quiet persistence and a love for me that grew with every weekend trip to the suburbs. And when I realized that New Jersey wasn’t such a bad place, that was when things started to click.

“Fast-forward almost three years later, and I was packing up for a move to Bergen County. We found a charming little saltbox colonial home in Waldwick, franchised a designer cabinetry business together at the new Paramus Design Center, and with every passing day, I found myself appreciating more and more the unexpected beauty of suburban life.”

SUSAN AND MIKE COLELLA, TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON:

“We both played sports for Montclair State. Soon after our first encounter, Mike showed an interest in me, and he approached a mutual friend to see if she could be a matchmaker. But at the time I was in a relationship, and I said I could only pursue friendship, nothing more. As the years went by, we played ‘relationship ping-pong.’ When I was out of my relationship, Mike was in one. When Mike was out of his relationship, I was in one.

“It took three-and-a-half years for anything to begin. We were heading into our last year of college and training camp, and it was summer. I walked into a sports bar with 10 male friends, my brother and my soon-to-be ex. We sat down, had some wings and then headed out. On the way out this guy caught my eye. I rounded the turn, stopped my brother and said, ‘I think I know him.’ He said to go back and say hi, but I was too nervous. I walked out bummed that I did not go back, a little disappointed in myself.

“The next evening I received a call, and the caller said, ‘Do you know who this is?’ I said, ‘I think it’s Mike.’ It was. It took him all summer to track down my phone number, and he was hesitant to call. Mike was giving his friend an update on his mission to track down my number, and at that moment, I walked in. He looked at his friend and said, ‘That’s her!’ After that, he knew he had to call; it was just too odd of a coincidence. We talked for some time and agreed to go out on a ‘group date.’

“Our first date was with friends at a college bar that stank of stale beer. It was the best date I have ever had! The next day I broke up with my boyfriend without hesitation and told my mom I’d met the guy I was going to marry. She rolled her eyes at me as if to say I was young and dumb, but I knew this was special. We were soulmates.

“Mike and I have been married for 23 years and created a family. We’re still each other’s best friends. It’s funny how fate and some chicken wings can bring people together.”

JAMES AND MARY JARMUSCH, FAIR LAWN:

“I met my bride-to-be at Montclair State College, when it was still a ‘college.’ We met on a weekend trip during our freshman seminar course. She gave me her phone number on a piece of paper. That piece of paper joined my jeans in the wash when I got home. Rough start. We joined similar groups and reconnected over the years at Montclair. Her friends, my friends and our friends enjoyed our college days. We held a fake wedding ceremony at the college bar one afternoon, even before we started dating.

“Our primary college club was called the Human Relations Organization (HRO), and it focused on communication skills. It was the best decision in my life to join. We still have a dozen strong friends that we see on a regular basis for birthdays and holidays. They are our extended family, and our children call them aunts or uncles.

“Mary was a South Jersey girl—it took me a while to understand the pork roll thing. We saw Gone with the Wind at the Rosebud Theatre in Ridgewood, I introduced her to Van Dyk’s ice cream, and we danced on Saturday nights at the Fairfield Inn in Paramus well before Bonefish Grill came along. We were able to have a dinner at Omar’s in Fair Lawn before it became a TD Bank, and she was even willing to brave the Bendix Diner with me one late evening. She is fully a part of me. My life evolved with her, and it now revolves around her. She is my bride, my life, my love, my all.”

IVELISSE & ALEX DELGADO, MAHWAH:

“Our love story began in Hackensack High School, 1989. The first thing that attracted to me to him was his smile. I was quiet and shy, so I never dared to approach him. We then ran into each other a few weeks later in a more intimate setting and the same smile lit up the room. He was very funny and lively. We have been inseparable ever since. Now we are celebrating our 35th anniversary on Valentine’s Day. We have three beautiful children and are proud grandparents.”

AND MICHAEL SEBAHIE, MAYWOOD:

“Our story feels straight out of a movie—set in the most unexpected of places: a boxing gym inside Crunch Fitness in Paramus, where we first crossed paths in March 2016.

“I admired Michael from afar as he trained with laser focus, never imagining he noticed me. Little did I know, he had been sneaking glances my way too. That same month, I heard through the grapevine that he was competing in the NJ Golden Gloves tournament in Asbury Park. With excitement (and maybe a bit of nerves), I made the trip with a friend to watch him compete.

“After his win, I went to congratulate Michael and our coach. His shocked expression when he saw me there was priceless—especially since we had never exchanged a single word before. The very next day, we started messaging on Instagram and decided to meet for ice cream at the Dairy Queen in Rochelle Park.

“When Michael asked for my address to pick me up, he thought I was pulling a prank. It turned out that we lived just two blocks apart, but the way our street was divided placed us in separate towns. From his bedroom window, he could actually see my house!

“That meeting at Dairy Queen was the beginning of something magical. On May 2021, our five-year anniversary, Michael proposed in the beautiful Ringwood Botanical Gardens, and we tied the knot in November 2023 at Perona Farms in Andover. Fast-forward to today—a cat, two dogs, and countless memories later.

“It’s been an incredible journey, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us.”

ABBY AND RICK SATEL, RIVER EDGE:

“Rick and I met on a blind date in March 1987 (introduced by his high school girlfriend). We both knew immediately that this was it, especially when we named our children on our second date. (And we eventually used those names!) Got engaged in November and married two years later, in September 1989.

“He grew up in Tenafly (THS ‘81) and I in River Edge (RDHS ‘82). Thirty-five years later we are still living in our River Edge home, one mile from my childhood home.

“We met after college. I was working with his ex, and she was tired of me complaining about the guys I was dating. She gave him my number and he called me.

“We had dinner at Benihana in NYC, and there was a drunk man on my other side, so we spent the entire time joking with and about him. By the time we left the restaurant we were friends. (The secret to a happy marriage: friends first!)

“Life hasn’t been simple or easy, but lhumor, communication, sarcasm and a lot of love have all kept us going.”

They weren’t exactly giants, this Ridgewood pair. But the European-style kitchen in the five-bedroom colonial they’d bought in 2014 seemed somehow to be built for smaller folk. Parents of two growing high schoolers, they found themselves having to bend over to prepare meals. But they exercised patience until the timing was right in 2020 to end the Goldilocks “nothing fits” scenario with a kitchen sized just right for them—and maybe perfect porridge too.

“The kitchen didn’t work well for them because they were always bent over,” recalls Linda Granert of the eponymous Midland Park design firm. She notes that the cabinets in this 1988-built home fell below the 36-inch standard height, and the double oven couldn’t fit a traditional cookie sheet. So, although Granert was first contacted in 2018 for her take on paint colors, window treatments and furniture elsewhere in the home, the biggest project was on the back burner.

“They knew from the beginning that they were going to renovate the kitchen,” Granert says. “They just waited so they could do it properly.” She explains that “properly” meant a gut-job renovation, from floor to ceiling, including a redesigned window area “to let in more light.”

to be outdated and dark. “The kitchen was done with European-style cabinetry and the people that they bought the home from were older,” recalls Granert. But “it wasn’t just a cabinet upgrade,” she says.

Actually, the kitchen was “a decent size” and required neither expansion nor revised layout to accommodate both an island and table as well as a coffee bar and plenty of storage. “A lot of people put in coffee bars now, and we had the space,” Granert explains. Now the kitchen’s entire backsplash is Eastern white-and-gray marble by Wayne Tile, but the coffee bar dances to its own beat with an overlaying leaf motif—a departure from the room’s predominant brick pattern. While a beverage fridge makes the coffee station a hostess’s helper, style is also brewing with glass-front cabinet doors.

For the room’s perimeter cabinets, Granert chose modern, recessed panels in white with a top layer of decorative glass and complementary hood over a Wolf stove. The cabinetry’s upper panels of decorative glass flank the window feature wall, which went through a light-bright transformation, losing an arch to a rectangular transom.

Because the wife adores blue, Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy became the accent color, helping the island cabinetry dominate aesthetically in accord with her vision. The navy, which also wakes up the coffee bar, goes a long way to warm up the white but isn’t alone in this mission.

The allure of gold tones—another warm element—lends elegance to the lighting, everything from a milky-white glass pendant at the sink to painted-metal-drum pendants over the island and a beaded chandelier in the dining area (all Visual Comfort). Gold “just looks good with the white and the blue as well as the soft gray tones that are on the walls,” Granert says. Even the cabinet hardware boasts a gold effect.

switch from the room’s dated tile squares. “Most people want wood in their kitchen, but wood for families that are busy, that utilize their kitchen every day, is not a practical flooring material due to wear and tear,” says Granert. She’s grateful that porcelain has become an adept copycat. “It gives you the warmth and beauty of wood but with the durability of tile.”

As per the wife’s wish list, the island commands attention, not only with its navy base but also with extra oomph from the quartz countertop. “The design goal was to paint the island in an accent color and have the quartz be slightly different from the perimeter,” says Granert. This goal is met at the island with a more striking quartz pattern and a two-inch-thick edge. In keeping with the flooring’s no-fuss makeup, the island stools (Essentials For Living) combine style with woven-rope backs, antique teak legs and performance fabric for carefree living.

The island stands out, but it is far from the family’s only sit-down option. In the kitchen’s dining area, there’s a pleasing lattice pattern to the Hooker Furniture chairs, which have a practical side: easy-to-clean fabric. With the glam of gold, a three-tiered chandelier makes a grand impression over Bernhardt’s round table with pedestal base— and abstract art adds further visual impact. And the wall of windows that celebrates the beauty of the outdoors? Granert keeps it open but accentuates with custom Roman shades adorned with gray banding by Kravet.

With the kitchen’s long-awaited redesign, life has regained its proper perspective. The kids have started college, and the kitchen is sized right for everyday use as well as for gatherings.

“It made it a lot easier for them to cook and clean because the sink and the cooktop became normal height as opposed to many heights,” says the designer.

And when the homeowners entertain, the coffee bar does more than dazzle the eye. It’s quick on the draw with either java or cocktails, demonstrating that the best things in life are worth the wait.

ARE WE ALL LONELY?

These days people hunger for connection, and their very health could be at stake. Happily, there are ways to beat the epidemic of isolation, but it takes effort.

Diane Palmer remembers when she was one half of a married pair and virtually all of her friends were as well. But when the Midland Park resident and her husband divorced five years ago, those friendships seemed to dissolve. At 66, she says, “I felt too old to make new friends, let alone try online dating. Truly, the aloneness of it all was killing me.”

Palmer is just one of millions of Americans suffering from what a 2023 U.S. Surgeon General’s report called “an epidemic of loneliness.” According to various national surveys, some 50 percent of us report feeling lonely, making the loneliness epidemic almost as widespread as COVID, which reportedly sickened 58 percent of the population. While no one has yet done a survey of Bergen County residents on the subject, New Jersey’s Department of Human Services recently published a study showing that more than one in four residents in the state suffered from acute loneliness and social isolation. In a month

when romantic love is celebrated, that sense of isolation can feel especially severe. Loneliness isn’t just emotional; it’s been linked to an increased risk not just of depression and anxiety but also of cardiovascular disease, dementia, stroke and premature death. According to the Surgeon General’s report, it does as much damage to the body as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. COVID exacerbated this other epidemic but didn’t cause it, says Shelly Wimpfheimer, executive director of The Community Chest of Englewood, which has sponsored several well-attended conferences addressing the problem of loneliness in Bergen County. “It existed before the pandemic,” she says. “It’s just that we didn’t talk about it very much before then.”

What the pandemic did was to make loneliness more entrenched, as institutions—from schools and businesses to houses of worship—pivoted online. Before COVID, few if any such places offered Zoom services; now most do, and some

people prefer them. In fact, much of the blame for the loneliness epidemic can be laid at the feet of pervasive technology. Cell phones allow us to be more connected than ever before, but often at the cost of genuine, face-to-face connection.

“Spending so much time on their phones is really inhibiting the younger generation’s social skills,” says Hannah Marcus, a licensed professional counselor at Bergen New Bridge Medical Center. Teachers have told her, for instance, that between classes, the hallways of their high schools—once raucous with teenage greetings and gossip—are now mostly silent. And, says Marcus, young professionals, who work long hours, many of them from a desk at home, “say that it’s impossible to make friends after college.” Widespread political polarization doesn’t help. “Twenty years ago it was really easy to hang out with people who didn’t share your political views,” Marcus notes. “Now it’s gone from ‘I don’t agree with you’ to ‘You’re a bad person.’”

Sometimes it seems that our tech-infused culture conspires against human connection. We’ve quickly gone from bank tellers to ATMs, from cashiers to self-checkouts, from telephone operators to automated voicemail “options.”

Opportunities to simply talk to another human are increasingly sparse. We also move more than ever before—which can make loneliness a problem for kids, from preschoolers to adolescents, who find themselves thrust into a new school environment. And loneliness can be particularly difficult, says Wimpfheimer, among single parents, who may lack the time to connect when they need connection the most.

While loneliness takes a toll across generations, it’s most intense among older people.

Like Green, many seniors have lost friends and family; if they’re retired, they no longer have the social connection a job affords.

The county’s nonprofits are increasingly stepping up to help older residents overcome loneliness. Bergen Volunteers, for instance, runs the CHEER (Chores Homemaker Education, Encouragement and Rehabilitation) program, which pairs homebound seniors with volunteers, who visit at least once a week. “Our volunteers are trained so they know how to interact with those who are homebound,” says Ogden. “They offer judgment-free friendship to combat all the negative effects of loneliness.” The group also helps seniors address problems such as with vision and hearing that may be contributing to their isolation. And it pairs

don’t instantly make pals in them. Friendships, if they develop, can be a happy bonus.

• If you need to, start digitally. It may sound paradoxical, but for those daunted by the idea of jumping into a real-world group, an easier way in may be online. Some local groups offer online workshops that provide an entrée into in-person activities. The Family Support Organization of Bergen County, for example, runs workshops like Journal to Wellness and Teen Relationships that can be attended virtually or in person.

NEEDED: OTHER PEOPLE

Because our epidemic of loneliness has so many causes, says Wimpfheimer, it will require more than the social equivalent of a vaccine to end it.

The Surgeon General’s report suggests long-term fixes such as urban planning with interpersonal connection in mind (more green spaces, parks, strollable town centers), training healthcare workers to screen for and treat loneliness, reforming the internet to encourage connection and developing a national research agenda. That doesn’t mean that loneliness isn’t already being studied and addressed. Because the problem has long been most prevalent among seniors, for instance, Bergen County offers many programs to help older residents connect and overcome isolation.

The county’s Division of Senior Services runs 10 activity centers at which seniors can meet daily for activities that range from movies, potlucks and crafting lessons to aromatherapy, hand massage and brain fitness. The division also offers a lunch program for active seniors, to boost not just nutrition but also connection.

seniors with volunteers who provide holiday and Valentine’s Day gifts. For LBGT seniors, the Bergen County LBGTQ+ Alliance runs monthly lunch meets at area restaurants. These groups and programs are a testament to the hopeful notion that loneliness doesn’t have to be a permanent condition. Indeed, while the Surgeon General’s report is titled “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation,” its subtitle is far more sanguine: “The U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on the Healing Effects of Social Connection and Community.” In fact, fostering connection can start at the individual level, at any age:

• Find your “third place.” A third place, explains Wimpfheimer, “is a space beyond home and work where we can engage with other people.” Recognize that, for those already feeling the sting of loneliness, locating a third place isn’t necessarily easy. “You have to challenge yourself to go outside your comfort zone a little,” says Wimpfheimer.

• Start with what you want to do, rather than whom you want to meet. That way, you’ll be more likely to meet like-minded people—and even if you don’t make personal connections, you’ll still be having fun. If you’ve always wanted to paint, for instance, you’re likely to get something out of watercolor classes even if you

• Cultivate small talk. “Yeah, people always say they hate small talk,” admits Marcus. “But small talk, as painful as it can be, is a way to form relationships—you have to start somewhere.” Another irony: The internet is filled with advice on how to master small talk. • Take advantage of community spaces that encourage connection. They include parks, playgrounds and libraries—all of which are abundant in Bergen County.

• Consider therapy. A therapist or a support group can offer invaluable advice and yes, support—not to mention the face-to-face interaction that’s the ultimate antidote to loneliness. In fact, it was through therapy that Diane Palmer finally got the courage to step out of her comfort zone. She joined an online dating site, had several “highly unpromising” dates, and then met Mike, who, she says, “could maybe, possibly, be the one.” She’s hedging her bets, though, by volunteering at an environmental nonprofit, where she’s forged several friendships. “And,” she adds, “it gets me out of the house—and out of my own head—and lets me feel like I’m doing something important”— which turns out, she notes, to be another worthy antidote to loneliness.

Can learning be fun? Five nearby destinations will prove to your kids that the answer is yes.

When it comes to visiting museums and other attractions, many children are of two minds: a joyful thumbs-up if it means a “field trip” that gets them out of school for the day, but a groan of reluctance if it’s proposed for a “free” weekend or vacation day.

But just maybe your kids don’t know it all. Exploring the right museum promises not only to enlighten them, but to show them a good time too. And a day trip of this kind just may succeed in temporarily peeling your kids’ eyes off their various screens, be they phone, laptop, tablet or TV.

Isn’t it worth a try? Here are five nearby road-trip destinations:

THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY, NEW YORK, N.Y.

Distance from Bergen: 20 miles. This famous museum is big—you could get lost for days in its 21 interconnected buildings. Almost any subject that captures your child’s heart will be the focus of an in-depth display here. See artifacts from cultures around the world (one example: the Northwest Coast Hall, illustrating the history of indigenous cultures of the Pacific Northwest, re-opened in 2022), or browse the Halls of Gems and Minerals, where specimens glitter under the lights. Of course, the dinosaurs and fossils are among this destination’s biggest draws, including the towering T-Rex and the museum’s newest prehistoric display, Apex, one of the largest and most complete Stegosaurus specimens ever uncovered.

After you browse. If you and the kids get hungry, there are several dining options in the museum, including a full food court (with both gluten-free and nut-free choices), two cafes and the sit-down The Restaurant at Gilder, which overlooks the impressive architecture of the Kenneth C. Griffin Exploration Atrium. Venturing outside can take you to one of hundreds of great Manhattan eateries. You’ll find plenty of chains if you’re looking for something quick (there’s a Shake Shack down the street), in addition to New York-style pizza places for the perfect slice. LIBERTY SCIENCE CENTER, JERSEY CITY.

Distance from Bergen: 30 miles. Intended “to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers and excite learners of all ages,” this facility is full of interactive exhibits designed to captivate the imagination and foster a lifelong curiosity and love of learning. Stop by for the Boom Time exhibit, where you can see watermelons, pumpkins and bouncy balls explode under controlled circumstances, or play in the Dino Dig Adventure and uncover replicas of fossils (weather permitting). There’s also the 80-foot Touch Tunnel, which encourages kids to move through a pitch-black space to dramatize how much we rely on our eyesight. The Jennifer Chalsty Planetarium, America’s largest, plays jaw-dropping star shows daily.

After you browse. Not far from the Science Center is Pinwheel Garden Dumpling and Noodle Bar, an Asian-fusion spot where you can enjoy a colorful, innovative meal (and maybe convince the kids to try something new). Liberty State Park offers an incredible view of the Statue of Liberty. (Don’t tell anyone we said this, but it’s better than the one you get from NYC.) For older kids and thrill seekers, just down the street is RPM Raceway, where you can zip around on go-carts and enjoy an arcade.

WESTCHESTER CHILDREN’S MUSEUM, RYE, N.Y.

Distance from Bergen: 40 miles. Learning and play go hand in hand in this 22,000-square-foot facility, which prides itself on removing the “do not touch” signs from the museum experience. From the constantly-open MakerSpace stocked with clay and other art supplies to the “build your own roller coaster” tracks to the mini wind tunnel, nearly everything here is interactive and made with little hands (and STEM learning) in mind. There are daily drop-in programs, including story times and music and movement classes. There’s also a special themed weekend at the start of each month. On Feb. 8 and 9, you can celebrate “Kindness Weekend” with friendship bracelets and cookie-themed crafts, and on March 8 and 9 enjoy Slimefest, with every kind of slime, dough and sand you can imagine.

After you browse. Nestled against Long Island Sound, Rye is a beautiful place to take a stroll any time of year. (The museum itself overlooks the water.) For a sit-down lunch or dinner, Rye Grill & Bar is a short drive away and has something for every taste (and an extensive kids’ menu). THE MARITIME AQUARIUM, NORWALK, CONN.

Distance from Bergen: 53 miles. Dive under the sea and discover seals, turtles and all kinds of fish at this Connecticut aquarium. You’ll find extensive exhibits on the creatures of Long Island Sound here, including rays and playful river otters. You can also see less familiar animals, such as the spiny lionfish or the giant Pacific octopus. One of Maritime’s marquee exhibits is Pinniped Cove, where playful harbor seals swim back and forth for hours. There’s also a 4D theater on the premises. In February, two screenings will be held daily—Turtle Odyssey and Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure Besides eye-popping 3D effects, the theater’s seats vibrate and move, creating a totally immersive experience.

After you browse. For comfort food and a name sure to make the kids giggle, check out Jacob’s Pickles South Norwalk. (The mac-and-cheese is legendary.) If the weather is nice and you’re craving more education, check out Norwalk’s Oyster Shell Park, which combines scenic views of the river with trails that lead past historical buildings. Distance from Bergen: 75 miles. This year-round sculpture garden will delight young artists and young outdoor enthusiasts alike. Art and nature mingle across 42 landscaped acres dotted with nearly 300 contemporary sculptures, many of them towering high above the ground. (The starker landscape of winter as a backdrop lends extra drama to some.) There are also several indoor gallery spaces. On display until the end of February is a special “Light as Material” exhibition, for which artists sculpt with light and shadow. The Grounds also hosts special craft days for kids—join them on Feb. 15 for a fun paper-marbling craft session and take home a special “love monster.”

After you browse: Want something sweet to round out your day? Not far from Grounds for Sculpture is Hamilton’s Eet Gud Bakery, which has been open for 96 years and has some of the best pastries, cookies and other treats in the area. (Its donuts are a must-try). CAULIFLOWER PARMESAN

Yields 4 servings

INGREDIENTS

n 1 head of cauliflower

n 2 Tbs. olive oil

n 1 cup marinara sauce

n 1 cup reduced fat shredded mozzarella cheese

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with foil or non-stick spray.

Cut the head of cauliflower into 4 “steaks” and set them on the baking sheet.

Brush both sides with the 2 tablespoons of olive oil divided evenly between the four and season with salt and pepper.

Place the baking sheet into the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Flip the cauliflower over and bake for another 10-15 minutes.

Remove the cauliflower from the oven and set the oven to broil. Divide one cup marinara sauce evenly between the four cauliflower steaks and top with one cup reduced fat shredded mozzarella cheese divided evenly as well.

Place the baking sheet back into the oven and bake for another 3-5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Once done, remove from the oven and serve right away.

DIRECTIONS

Place oil in a large pot and place over medium high heat. Add in garlic, onion, diced carrot, red bell pepper, cubed sweet potatoes and green chiles; saute for 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently.

Next add in chili powder, cumin, oregano, garlic powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt and black pepper; stir for about 30 seconds.

Finally add in crushed tomatoes, broth/water, black beans, kidney beans and corn. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30-45 minutes or until chili thickens and flavors come together. Taste and adjust seasonings and salt as necessary.

Garnish with anything you’d like. Makes 6 servings, about 1½ cups each.

Same Name, New Fame

Rebecca’s in Edgewater trades a Cuban menu for delightful Mediterranean fare.

Restaurants come and go, but many endure and become mainstays of the culinary community. Since 1998, Rebecca’s has been a name Bergenites associated with top-tier food and service. It opened in a cozy space along the base of the Edgewater cliffs, serving traditional and inventive Cuban dishes to those with discerning palates. For those reasons, I (along with many other diners in the area) was surprised when ownership pivoted last year to reinvent the place as an upscale Mediterranean restaurant.

I took my girlfriend to the new Rebecca’s (the name was kept) on a cold Saturday night last month. She’d done her homework and browsed the website before we walked in the door, retelling the story of the eatery’s beginnings and informing me that live music would begin at 9 p.m. Seeing that the doors had just opened for dinner (it was only 6 p.m.), there was plenty of quiet dining time ahead. We shared the dimly lit dining room with only two other couples, so it was easy for everyone in the space to soak up the early evening’s intimate vibe.

For this date-night dinner, we sipped on-thehouse black teas and selected two appetizers to start. My choice was the beet root Napoleon, an elegant dish that looks as good as it tastes. I always thought of this as a festive starter for special occasions; perhaps Rebecca’s simply insists that every meal here is a treat. Indeed, the complementary flavors of the earthy beets and rich, tangy goat cheese were a pleasure, and they were heightened by crunchy roasted walnuts and a tangy balsamic glaze. I was in charge of cutting the app and splitting it into two equal halves, but I deceitfully sliced mine a tad larger. No regrets.

We were torn between babaganoush and grilled octopus for our second appetizer, but ultimately chose the latter—and, boy, was it a good move. I’ve tried many iterations of this dish at other restaurants; some were on point while others struck out mightily. Rebecca’s grilled octopus is top-notch. The large octopus tentacle had perfect char marks, and it cut smoothly with the knife. Each bite was divine, the tender meat exploding with juices on every chew. Alone or

with a forkful of the accompanying sauteed diced potatoes (which had the same charred taste as the meat), the octopus appetizer is a memorable delight.

Though poultry and vegetarian options were tempting when it was time to order entrées, red meat and seafood were our first choices. I had the Hünkâr filet mignon, which was paired with a rich demi-glace sauce, creamy eggplant mousse, mini peppers and cherry tomatoes. The steak was prepared to my requested doneness (medium-rare), and the combination of meat, mousse and veggies was excellent. The cut I received, however, was a bit smaller than ones I’ve been served in other upscale steakhouses. That’s my only hang-up, a minor one, in an otherwise satisfying dish.

My girlfriend, meanwhile, opted for the grilled branzino—her first time trying the fish. Though she was under the impression that a whole fish would be served, the portion came without head and tail. (The menu does not say whole grilled branzino.) That made the dish— and getting to the flaky, buttery fish—easier to navigate. Just as scrumptious were the sauteed veggies and grilled carrots, which after a quick taste made me recall the wonderful taproot appetizer we’d had earlier.

The list of end-of-meal sweets is modest and probably won’t wow a dessert connoisseur. (Greek yogurt parfait, two scoops of sorbet and chocolate lava cake are among the offerings.)

But don’t shy away from the baklava. Unlike other restaurants that offer the familiar golden phyllo dessert, Rebecca’s serves a version that’s entirely green, from the crisp dough to the layers of pistachio. The texture of the inside closely resembles cake instead of the familiar flaky phyllo found in neighborhood gyro joints.

While I was a fan of the former Rebecca’s Cuban cuisine, the new menu won me over during my first visit, and I’m certain it will continue to reel in new customers as well as those who haven’t stopped by in a while. Because, as it did in the past, Rebecca’s still impresses.

1. CENTER FOR FOOD ACTION

Earlier this season, members of Alpha Kappa Psi at Ramapo College of New Jersey donated food to the Center For Food Action’s pantry in Mahwah. The donation helped stock the shelves and feed local families in need.

The Community Chest’s Young Women’s Leadership Program celebrated its seventh anniversary with a fashion show at the Max Mara in the Shops at Riverside. The nonprofit provides grants to agencies that serve those facing hardships in the community.

4. BERGEN VOLUNTEERS

Paramus-based Bergen Volunteers held its Taste & Toast fundraiser, treating guests to live music, delicious wine and food, inspiring volunteer stories and the premiere of its new impact video. The event raised funds to support All Wrapped Up, Bergen Volunteers’ holiday giving program.

Table to Table, headquartered in Saddle Brook, received a $5,500 donation from Dan Meredith Agency, LLC: Allstate Insurance. Funds will help the nonprofit’s mission of rescuing food that would have otherwise been discarded and donating it to families and groups in need.

The chamber held its annual meeting, giving members a chance to enjoy insightful conversations and inspiring moments. Stew Leonard Jr was on hand and offered his insight as well as a gift to all attendees.

Holy Name Emergency Medical Services’ Basic Life Support (BLS) Team 1 won first place at the 2024 National Conference on EMS Simulation Games. Receiving the prize were EMTs Sarah Hamoud and Joseph Bisulca, who dedicated months to training at the Russell Berrie Institute for Simulation Learning.
