Many Bergenites have stayed secure inside their homes for the past two years, but we’re all safely getting back out again— slowly but surely. If you haven’t been out much, some things have changed: Masks are still seen on many faces; hand sanitizer is offered at mall entrances; outdoor igloos are available at many restaurants. This is the new normal, and we’re adjusting to it. As you make your way back to in-person shopping and dining out, you might find yourself returning to your favorite places. There’s a certain comfort in going back to a familiar routine and turning on autopilot. But sometimes a change can do you good. That’s why BERGEN is proud to present to you the 2022 Guide, a trusty handbook with 20 categories of services and destinations. Your beloved restaurants, salons, etc. are likely in the listings, but you’ll also see that our county has a wealth of other options that can suit your needs. Longtime residents already know this, but our new neighbors are still exploring. Quality counts most, of course. But just for fun, what tales do the figures tell?

The biggest thing that happened in Bergen County in 2021? We got our kids back to classrooms and our lives somewhat back to normal thanks to abundant COVID-19 vaccines, which a large percentage of us accepted. Though it had its shaky moments (thanks, Hurricane Ida!), 2021 was overall a step up from its predecessor (a low bar, admittedly). And the numbers below speak eloquently about the last 12 months in our county.

Then there’s the awkward business of adding the Phil Murphy vote to the Jack Ciattarelli vote, allowing for a smattering of minor candidates, and then looking at the county’s total number of registered voters. Seems a whale of a lot of Bergenites didn’t bother to choose a governor. Uh-oh.

Stores We Remember Brick-and-mortar retail was a tough business even before the pandemic, and there were casualties. But these five sites are still places where you can shop.

Imagine how excited we’d all be if we’d been shopping online for centuries and someone invented the physical store. Suddenly we’d be able to browse aisles, peruse merchandise, try on outfits and appraise new novels by their heft—what a wondrous innovation the in-person shopping experience would be! Instead, of course, shopping in stores has been a constant in our lives. We recall the annual late-summer back-to-school shopping trip, the festive fracas of holiday gift-buying in December—maybe even trooping to the mall as teens to see if certain other teens were also hanging out there. Sometimes it takes a closing sign on a retailer’s door to help us realize how beloved that store has come to be. The five Bergen establishments here are gone now, victims of a changing marketplace. But we still have the memories they provided—and perhaps some of the merchandise. And score one for poor old brick-and-mortar: These locations are not the same stores today, but by golly, they’re still stores!

BRADLEES Bradlees on Route 46 in Saddle Brook was known for infusing fun into the family shopping experience. It was loved by millennials, who grew up with the Northeast-based department store. Parents would search for bargains, just like Mrs. B in the well-known ads, and at most stores a kid could count on a snack-bar treat such as a soft pretzel. Bradlees went bankrupt in 2000 and closed all its remaining stores the following year; Walmart took the Saddle Brook location in 2003.

SEARS When Paramus Park Mall opened in 1974, inviting shoppers to “picnic in the park,” Sears held a starring role as a 169,000-square-foot anchor. It was an iconic place to buy everything from dungarees to dishwashers—and fix a car too. Founded in Chicago in 1892 by Richard Warren Sears and Alva Curtis Roebuck based on predecessor businesses, Sears, Roebuck & Co. was for many decades an indispensable fixture of Americana, particularly beloved for its holiday catalog. (And if you remember the “Roebuck,” you’re of a certain age.) Some Sears stores remain, but their number is diminishing; the nationwide goliath hit bankruptcy in 2018, the same year the Paramus anchor rang its last sale. When Stew Leonard’s helped fill the void in September 2019, it was a milestone for both Paramus and New Jersey, marking the chain’s first food-and-wine store in the state.

TOYS “R” US When Geoffrey, the Toys “R” Us mascot, packed his bags and moved from that iconic blue façade on Route 17 South in Paramus, the site would not stay empty for long. Big Lots snagged the location for its first Bergen County store and has been there since 2019 with bargains for all ages—including bargains on toys. Like many retail giants, Toys “R” Us was shipwrecked in a turbulent economy that packed a hard blow during the 2017 holiday season. But the company returned in December, opening a two-level store at American Dream mall. Of course, kids of all ages can still buy from Geoffrey and the gang online.

PACKARD’S

BORDERS

Though it’s been closed for three decades, Packard’s on Main Street in Hackensack still evokes memories as a true “everything” store—a grocery market surrounded by services, such as a barbershop and travel agency. Just as colorful was its namesake, Yale grad Frank Packard, who fought the government for consumer-friendly pricing. Formally known as PackardBamberger & Co., the venture included department store VP Edgar Bamberger. The 274,000-square-foot site became an indoor flea market before demo in 2001 for Target, a modern all-in-one store.

Borders at Garden State Plaza in its heyday was often packed with bookworms and those embracing a hangout that was just right for the movie-theater wing—because books entertain as well as inform. Though Borders no doubt thrived in one of the state’s most successful malls, this one vanished with the rest of the debt-ridden company, which in 2011 announced nationwide liquidation plans. Amazon brought books back in June 2017, opening its first New Jersey bookstore at GSP. The site is smaller than Borders was, but customers are welcoming this new chapter. People do still shop in person—and still read!

Bergen On The Screen Seven landmarks in our county have done star turns—or at least background bit parts—in the movies and on TV. Before there was Hollywood there was Fort Lee, the original motion picture capital of America, which reigned until executives moved out West for lower production costs. But Bergen County is still a thriving epicenter for the entertainment business, thanks in part to the 2019 introduction of the county’s Film & TV Office,

which makes it easier for movie makers to scout out locations and apply for filming permits here. Even before that office was born, of course, notable Bergen locations many times helped visual storytellers spin their tales. For example, how many of these landmarks have you seen—in person, and on the big or small screen?

BENDIX DINER, HASBROUCK HEIGHTS

This eatery on Route 17 is iconic, and not just because of its food or its old-school diner vibes. The Bendix has been a filming location for several pop culture productions—most recently it served as a backdrop in the Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark, and in the Bleachers music video for “Stop Making This Hurt.” (P.S.: Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff is from Woodcliff Lake.)

CLOSTER PLAZA, CLOSTER

The main shopping strip on Vervalen Street was the backdrop for the Oscar-nominated film The Wolf of Wall Street starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill. The film crew shot inside a few vacant buildings there, in addition to the now-closed Paulie’s Restaurant on Schraalenburgh Road.

EDGEWOOD COUNTRY CLUB, RIVER VALE

The three-season Amazon Prime series Red Oaks follows a college student in the 1980s on his first day as an assistant tennis pro at the Red Oaks Country Club. It was filmed at this country club and event venue in River Vale, not far from show creator Gregory Jacobs’ hometown of Harrington Park.

For When Harry Met Sally, starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, a scene in which Crystal’s character attends a football game was filmed at the former Giants Stadium in East Rutherford.

PIZZA LAND, NORTH ARLINGTON

You can’t miss Pizza Land, the brick-front, hole-in-the-wall pizza shop that’s featured in the opening sequence of The Sopranos. This iconic HBO series starring the late James Gandolfini of Park Ridge also filmed at Satin Dolls in Lodi and Ramsey Outdoor in Paramus.

RAMAPO MOUNTAIN STATE FOREST, OAKLAND

Recognize that gloomy park that Katniss, played by Jennifer Lawrence, is practicing in in the opening credits of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the second installment in the book-turned-film series? That’s because it was shot in Oakland in this state forest that spans parts of Bergen and Passaic counties.

TEANECK ARMORY, TEANECK

The inside of this arena owned by the New Jersey National Guard was used to film interior shots in the ’90s romantic comedy You’ve Got Mail starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, which is set in Manhattan.

Keep your eyes and ears peeled for a release date for Armageddon Time, an upcoming coming-of-age film set in the ’80s and starring Anne Hathaway and Anthony Hopkins. ANSWER: The Wortendyke Barn in Park Ridge was built around 1770 and was a part of the family farm, which operated until 1851. The steep sloping roof maximized storage of crops and hay. Restored in the 1970s, the barn is now home to a museum highlighting Bergen's agricultural history.

February 1, 2020. Louis flatlined 3 times in the ER of Holy Name, and we brought him back. But that massive heart attack left him feeling scared and broken. He hadn’t even opened up to his wife and daughters about how he felt. Yet, when he started cardiac rehabilitation, his nurse Vijay met him and just knew. So when the pandemic hit and our cardiac rehab center had to shut down, Vijay never stopped motivating Louis. At a time when Louis was so scared of losing progress and falling back, Vijay made sure Louis knew exactly what steps to take and how to move forward—not just physically but emotionally, too.
