As a professional athlete, travel is a huge part of my life. With tournaments, sponsor obligations, and training, I spend up to forty weeks a year on the road. Over the course of my golf career, that can add up significantly. The Cessna Citation Excel/XLS is spacious enough to bring friends along for the ride, and the King Air 350i can access shorter runways, bringing me closer to more remote tournaments. I train hard to be the best professional golfer, and Wheels Up is the most efficient way to stick to my schedule and advance my career. Wheels Up acts as an agent for the Wheels Up members, and is not the operator of the program aircraft; FAA licensed and DOT registered air carriers participating in the program exercise full operational control of the program aircraft. Subject to additional terms and conditions in the Wheels Up Program documents.

A Family Affair Three decades and two dozen BMWs—and a number of MINIs—later, one family keeps bringing their business back to Prestige.

T
he phrase “loyal customers” doesn’t do justice in describing the Pusillo family. In the past 30 years, Tony and Donna, along with their son, Anthony, have leased or owned more than two dozen BMW vehicles from Prestige Family of Fine Cars and Prestige BMW. The family acquired their first BMW in 1987—the then-new 735i sedan, in black. Since then, they’ve driven a variety of BMWs, including models from the 5 Series, 6 Series and 7 Series, and the X5 SUV—not to mention the magnificent M6 Gran Coupe. In recent years, Prestige client advisor Lori Asserson, with her unparalleled professionalism, worked in conjunction with the Pusillo family to coordinate the delivery of seven BMWs, along with a number of vehicles resulting from referrals to family and friends. Son Anthony even recently took delivery of seven MINI vehicles to use for his business! “Needless to say, we are firm believers in the quality BMW delivers and in Prestige BMW for the professionalism they bring to
the overall BMW experience,” says Tony. During the Pusillo family’s most recent visit to Prestige BMW, Tony and Donna’s grandson—and future BMW driver—Andrew came along. The Prestige staff was happy to discover that he’s well versed in BMW’s models and hopes to be driving one when he gets his license in a few more years. The Pusillos also appreciate how Prestige gives back to their customers’ communities. “Events in support of local organizations take place on a regular basis,” marvels Tony. “This is the kind of group that I prefer to do business with—and will continue to do so with in the future.” We at Prestige extend our appreciation to the Pusillo family during this festive season and look forward to fulfilling all of our customers’ automotive dreams. Please feel welcome to stop by any of Prestige Family of Fine Cars’ dealerships. It’s our hope to elevate all of our customers’ experiences beyond expectations. Prestige wishes you and your family a happy holiday season!

lonely together Four of today’s best singer-songwriters draw you into their finely limned realms of heartache and exaltation. By Mark Dowden
Courtney Barnett Australian singer-songwriter and (left-handed) guitarist Courtney Barnett meandered through musical styles before making it on her own: She played second guitar in a garage grunge band in Melbourne; she next played slide, mostly, for a psych-country band, and then graduated to lead guitar on her girlfriend Jen Cloher’s studio album in 2013. That was the year Barnett herself achieved critical notice with her own double EP. Her witty lyrics, deadpan delivery and bitchin’ accent combine in a distinctive, highly likeable act. The album: Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit Go-to song: “Dead Fox”
Deeper dives: “Avant Gardener” and “Pickles From the Jar”
Ben bridwell
After launching Band of Horses in Seattle, front man Ben Bridwell returned to his native Charleston, S.C., where he lives with his wife and four daughters. “I feel like the best stuff that connects people to Band of Horses are these songs that have these discordant, quirky elements and weird-ass tunings that make no sense to anybody else,” he has said. Affable and self-effacing (he claims he’s a lousy musician), Bridwell writes catchy, often upbeat tunes, many of which are sublimely tinged by themes of loneliness and alienation. The album: Why Are You OK Go-to song: “Casual Party” Deeper dives: “The Funeral,” the band’s best-known song, and “The General Specific”
Sturgill Simpson Kentucky native Sturgill Simpson doesn’t fit neatly into the country music mold. He’s often compared to Waylon Jennings (although in truth he’s more like Merle Haggard), but that comparison misses his strangeness and originality. IndieWire got it right when it described Simpson’s sound as “a mesmerizing and sometimes bewildering mix of traditional country sounds, contemporary philosophy, and psychedelic recording-studio wizardry.” His first major-label release, out this year, positively soars. The album: A Sailor’s Guide to Earth Go-to song: “Brace for Impact (Live a Little)” on which he’s helped by The Dap-Kings Deeper dive: His cover of Nirvana’s “In Bloom”
Laura Mvula
| drive prestige
Birmingham, England has turned out many fine musical acts—Electric Light Orchestra, Traffic, The Moody Blues and UB40, to name a few—but have you heard Laura Mvula? You should, and you will. She got her start in an a cappella group, a gospel choir and church choirs. As a substitute teacher, she began writing songs on her laptop. She sent out a few demos, and lightning struck. Her 2013 debut album was followed this summer by a new LP that’s soulful and exultant. The album: The Dreaming Room Go-to song: “Phenomenal Woman,” funky and danceable Deeper dives: The ethereal “Who I Am” and “Sing to the Moon”

ack for a second year, the Ramapo Concours d’Elegance drew more than 750 automobile enthusiasts to view nearly 85 rare and luxury cars at the Ramapo College campus in Mahwah. Another portion of the two-day affair, the Sunday Concours Drive, took attendees in new and vintage cars on a scenic route from Ramapo College to a luncheon at The Thayer Hotel in West Point, N.Y. Proceeds from the Concours and Drive events benefit Ramapo College and the HackensackUMC Foundation. Event sponsors included The Prestige Family of Fine Cars, Konica Minolta, Lime Rock Park, Tiffany & Co., Garden State Plaza, Vanguard, Lincoln Tech, Sonic Tools, Petty’s Garage, Spindrift Classics, Garik, Infante Associates and Legends Car management.

or over 40 years, Aronsohn Weiner Salerno & Kaufman and its predecessor firms have provided quality legal services in a wide range of legal matters. “The firm has exhibited a tradition of high-caliber leadership and extraordinary results since its inception,” says managing partner Richard H. Weiner. “We take great pride in maintaining our long-standing reputation as one of the top litigation firms in Bergen County.” The Firm has served clients with innovative approaches to complex issues spanning various practice areas. The firm’s attorneys are equally adept at both litigating and mediating cases as well as providing
guidance to family owned businesses and sole proprietorships. “Clients have established long-standing relationships with us because we have a history of achieving successful results in the most cost-effective fashion,” says Gerald R. Salerno. Aronsohn Weiner Salerno & Kaufman is also known throughout the legal community for producing top-quality attorneys with outstanding leadership qualities. In fact, four of its former members have been appointed as Superior Court judges in the State of New Jersey. Weiner is renowned for his handling of sensitive, complex divorce matters. In 2015, the
Best Lawyers publication named Weiner one of the five individuals honored as “Family Lawyer of the Year” based on his particularly high level of peer recognition. He recently completed a six-year term as the sole representative from Bergen County to the Statewide Judicial and Prosecutorial Appointments Committee. He is also a past President of the Bergen County Bar Association (BCBA). For several years, New Jersey Magazine has named Weiner to its list of the Top 100 Lawyers in New Jersey. Salerno, also a BCBA past President, was appointed by the New Jersey Supreme Court to the Committee on Character. He is regularly appointed by the Courts in the State of New Jersey to serve as Discovery Master, Arbitrator and Mediator in high profile, complex litigation matters. Salerno also handles a variety of corporate and commercial transactions and represents a number of municipalities and private clients before zoning and planning boards. Barry L. Kaufman, who joined the firm in June 2015 as a Partner, has been practicing family law for 35 years. He excels in complex divorce matters and serves as a Court appointed and privately retained mediator and arbitrator. Often appointed by Courts in matters of highconflict and difficulty, Kaufman prides himself on thorough preparation, attention to detail, calm demeanor and unfailing courtesy to judges, clients and adversaries.

t’s been an amazing season for the Prestige Performance team and Lamborghini Paramus. The team excelled in the Super Trofeo North American Series, one of the most popular one-make series in the racing world, open to Huracán Super Trofeos only. To close out the year, the team will compete in the world finals in Valencia, Spain, in December. Prestige, one of the most active dealerowned teams on the North American circuit, won the Team, Pro Driver and Dealer categories in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo North America Championship. At the wheel were drivers Shinya Michimi, Trent Hindman, Dr. Craig Duerson, Stefan Wilson and David Seabrooke. The team, which is supported by Prestige’s partners in Wayne Taylor Racing (WTR), a legendary group of accomplished motorsports veterans who maintain the cars, has earned a global reputation for its diligent work ethic, transformative strategies and sheer tenacity on the racetrack. “Their commitment to their craft and to us as a dealer group is tremendous,” says Prestige Performance social media and event specialist Mark Laino of the drivers and WTR. “Prestige’s dedication to winning championships is similar to the effort we put into the Prestige customer experience—it’s total dedication.” A passion for sports cars and racing fuels each member’s commitment. “You’re taking a mechanical object and pushing it to the absolute limits of its ability to perform,” says Mark Juron, vice president of Prestige Management Services. “Then you’re trying to go 20 percent more. Because if you don’t, someone else will.” He serves as the team’s leader along with Lamborghini Paramus chief operating officer Chris Turner. With 50 years of racing experience, Juron is constantly reviewing data, trying to shave precious seconds off the clock to win. “You’re building a machine to perform at a level it wasn’t designed to,” he explains, “and trying to defeat basic physics.” With cars moving at upwards of 180 mph on the track, discipline and teamwork are key. “In one sense it’s like running any business,” says

Juron. “It’s really about finding people who play nice together to win.” “Everyone on the team has the same vision of success,” says driver Shinya Michimi. “With that shared vision, we’ve been able to push each other to get results.” His colleague Trent Hindman agrees. “Our most memorable moment was bringing home our first overall victory in race one at Road America,” he says. “We definitely had some luck on our side, but the brilliant strategy called by the Prestige/WTR crew put us in a position to win our class and the race outright.” For friends of Lamborghini Paramus who are in Valencia during the finals, a limited number of VIP tickets are available. They provide access to the cars as well as to a private bar and lounge and gourmet food presented with local Spanish flair. For those looking to delve deeper into the Lamborghini world, Lamborghini Paramus can also help facilitate enrollment in the Esperienza and Accademia programs—training courses designed to put drivers of nearly any ability behind the wheel of a Lambo on the racetrack. Juron is confident that the team will be firing on all cylinders when the green flag drops in Valencia. “The definition of luck is preparation meeting opportunity,” he says. “I know we’re going to go there with the best-prepared cars in the paddock. I believe in the drivers we’re putting in the cars. We’re going to give them an opportunity to win a world championship in the Pro-Am series.” “I’m doing everything I can from home to keep mind and body sharp, but really there isn’t much you can do but drive to keep any ‘rust’ off,” says Hindman. “I prepare with a heavy training schedule and tons of time on the simulator. For this year’s world final, Lamborghini chose a circuit that isn’t used too often for professional racing events, so every competitor is somewhat blind going into race week. It all comes down to doing your homework and arriving in Spain more prepared than the next guy.” “At the end of the day it’s like any other race,” says Michimi. “There are other cars on the track trying to beat you. And your goal is to beat them.” This page, clockwise from top: Prestige Performance crew members work before, during and after the race to keep the team’s Lamborghinis ahead of the competition; Michimi shows he’s number one after winning at Watkins Glen International Raceway. t’s the rare automobile that takes you to a place where the marriage of human and machine is complete. Where performance, design and comfort unify. The McLaren 570GT is one of these cars. This McLaren isn’t just another supercar, boasting all performance and no practical touches. It’s a car to enjoy every day, whether you’re shopping downtown or heading out for a weekend away. Refined, fast and functional, the McLaren 570GT features thoughtful touches such as a leather-trimmed touring deck that offers almost 8 cubic feet of storage and can be accessed easily via the rear side-opening glass hatch. More thoughtfully still, the touring deck is insulated to keep the V8 engine beneath it from melting your picnic. A panoramic roof brings light and space into the luxurious, leather-trimmed interior. “The glass roof opens up the car and brings the outdoors in,” says Jeff Drajin, general sales manager at McLaren Bergen County, New Jersey’s only McLaren dealer. “Being able to enjoy views of changing leaves or stars above you really adds to the driving experience.” The experience is further enhanced by impeccably designed interior features, including a 7-inch touch-screen infotainment system, heated power-adjustable memory sports seats and a power-adjustable steering wheel, which smoothly moves up out of your way when you enter or exit. Even the surround-sound system shows amazing attention to detail and performance. Eight speakers offering 320 watts come standard. If you want to up the audio ante, choose the optional 12-speaker system optimized for the McLaren Sports Series. Its two carbon-fiber Rohacell sub-bass woofers, five aluminum Nautilus tweeters, five Kevlar mid-range drive units and 14-channel 1280-watt amplifier unite in perfect McLaren’s luxurious 570GT borrows features from the 570S supercar, including a breathtaking 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged engine, but added comforts and style elements truly set it apart from its sibling. Its front and rear designs are artfully unique and distinctive, while soft-close scissor doors and a full panoramic sunroof, among other options, are now standard. Want more luxury? The 570GT sits on cast alloy wheels with Pirelli P Zero tires—their road-noise-suppression technology keeps things quiet in the cabin.

harmony to provide crystal-clear sound no matter how far into the red you’re pushing. Sumptuous appointments aside, make no mistake: The McLaren 570GT is a real go-getter. Beneath its artfully designed carbon-fiber MonoCell chassis and lightweight aluminum body beats the heart of a hard-driving sports car. A 3.8-liter, twinturbocharged engine crafted in aluminum and slung low in the chassis provides breathtaking agility and an outstanding power-to-weight ratio. Depending on your mood, the 7-speed gearbox can be driven in convenient Auto mode or controlled gear-by-gear through the steering wheel– mounted rocker-shift paddles. Cast-alloy wheels outfitted with Pirelli P Zero tires that perform year-round keep things quiet with their road noise–suppression technology. And when you want to stop (if you ever do), a lightweight composite brake system joins aluminum hubs with iron discs to provide secure feel and modulation, even when cold. (Carbon ceramic brakes are available as an upgrade.) But the real proof is in the pudding. And with a top speed of 204 mph, a torque ratio of 443 pound-feet and a 0–62 time of 3.4 seconds, there’s plenty of pudding. Of course, one wouldn’t expect any less from McLaren. But if you expect even more, the McLaren Special Operations unit is dedicated to providing customization options that make your new McLaren not only unique, but uniquely yours. To top it all off, the McLaren 570GT is a beauty. “I love the look of this car, especially from the back,” says Drajin. “It’s extremely distinctive.” The McLaren 570GT is the perfect union of thrilling and practical. It hits the sweet spot between the yin of performance and the yang of comfort, making it the supercar you can love driving every day. With almost 8 cubic feet of storage, the easily accessible touring deck is perfect if you’re loading a day’s worth of packages or a picnic. The McLaren’s sporty profile and V8 engine scream performance, but the power-adjustable, leather-wrapped steering wheel and easy-to-navigate console controls convey comfort and luxury.

hat do the Magna Carta, Bach’s “Mass in B Minor” and Mercedes-Benz have in common? They’ve each won a prestigious spot on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register, a carefully curated record of documents that tells the history of our world. Mercedes’ entry? An automobile patent submitted by Carl Benz on January 29, 1886—a piece of paper marking the start of what would become one of the globe’s most esteemed automobile companies.
The roots of innovation The late 19th century saw two German automotive titans compete to build an engine-driven car, a machine capable of changing the world. In one corner, Carl Benz, a man so obsessed with his vision that skittish investors in his company, Benz & Cie., took flight. Undaunted, Benz persevered, and with the financial backing of his wife, Bertha, he ultimately realized his goal: the creation of a fully integrated motorcar. It’s the very vehicle described in his legendary patent, aka the birth certificate of the automobile. In the other corner, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach, engineers driven by a This page, clockwise from top: Benz & Cie. built the 200 P Blitzen Benz, one of the fastest race cars in the early 20th century; Wilhelm Maybach and Gottlieb Daimler developed the compact “Grandfather Clock” engine for carriages in 1885; MercedesBenz began production of the 500K Spezial Roadster, a grand touring car, in the 1930s; Bertha Benz provided her husband, Carl, with the financial backing to create a fully integrated motorcar. similar passion. As Benz toiled away, Daimler and Maybach were working to develop an engine that could propel a carriage. Their efforts yielded the compact “Grandfather Clock” engine, perfect for vehicle installation. In 1890, Daimler, together with Max Duttenhofer and Wilhelm Lorenz, formed Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG). What of Maybach? As the Steve Jobs of his day, he departed DMG after a period of turmoil only to return and change the face of automotive science forever with his belt-driven car. Not long after, DMG broke ground with the introduction of its first “Mercedes” branded vehicle, remarkable for its low center of gravity and a 35-horsepower engine.
The merger that shaped automotive history The austerity following World War I prompted the former competitors to merge in 1926, ushering in Mercedes-Benz and the era of high-performance luxury vehicles: Think production supercharged cars, multilink suspension and electronic stability control. But comfort,

technology and performance are not enough to secure a brand’s place in the automotive pantheon. The essential ingredient? Style—a quality Mercedes-Benz has in droves. From famous beauties like the Gullwing 300-SL to purposebuilt military grade SUVs like the G-Wagen, Mercedes evokes a feeling of pure refinement.
A future that nods to glories past Not content to rest on its laurels, Mercedes-Benz continues to channel the spirit of its founders. Take the new E-Class as testament: Intelligent cruise control, the exclusive PRE-SAFE system that can sense and help prepare for a collision, and systems that provide drivers with real-time road-condition data demonstrate the company’s die-hard commitment to innovation. As for styling, the current lineup is ample proof. Consider the new AMG GT S Coupe: Its long nose, wide stance and classic sports car styling, nods to timeless SLS design cues, will have you scooping your jaw up off the floor. While the front end’s large grille and massive emblem scream aggression, the vehicle somehow maintains a certain elegance. It’s a balancing act that Mercedes has perfected, a melding of power and performance, style and grace that leaves the marque unrivaled.

ou spy it barreling down the road, a boxy brute with a certain aura about it. Yes, it’s big and aggressive but elegant, too. From afar, you might think you’re looking at a true military one-off, built in a secret lab for a James Bond mission. But as it gets closer you take notice of the shimmering Mercedes emblem, and your curiosity grows. It’s the Mercedes G-Class, a purpose-built SUV born of a joint effort between Mercedes and Steyr-Daimler-Puch. The original G-Class, called the G-Wagen (short for Geländewagen), began development in 1972 and was pressure tested in extreme locales such the Sahara desert and the Arctic Circle before entering production in 1979. During that time a specially built G-Wagen, dubbed the Papa G, was even sent to the Vatican to serve as the Popemobile. You might be able to tell from its looks that the G-Wagen has served in both civilian and military settings for the last 37 years. “The G-Wagen has truly stood the test of time—it’s one of the longest-produced Mercedes-Benz vehicles in Daimler’s history,”
says Harrison Jones III, general manager of Prestige Motors Mercedes-Benz. “In 1979, when the G Class was introduced to the world, it was strictly made to be driven off-road. There have been minimal changes to the exterior of the vehicle over time; however, the interior has been re-designed for passenger use. The G-Wagen is a military vehicle, which makes it not only popular for battle, but it also has the ability to battle harsh winters.” Not surprisingly, when Mercedes upgraded the wagon’s interior and added features like permanent 4-wheel drive and electronic differentials in 1990, all the while keeping the exterior virtually unchanged, it shook up the luxury SUV market. And today’s überimpressive AMG variants continue to do the same. Take note: The AMG G65 does 0–60 mph in 5.2 seconds courtesy of a 621-horsepower engine that products 738 lb-ft torque. It’s a rare beast that combines utility, class and styling, so the next time you see one barreling down the highway, take a moment to soak it all in.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class exudes elegance when driven along city streets, but the SUV’s aggressive appearance and weather-tested features and design makes it the perfect performer on and off the road. The AMG G65 is highway royalty: Its 621-horsepower engine gives it a 0–60 time of 5.2 seconds.

Mercedes-Benz developed its legendary G-Class with a military-inspired look and ride, but the company refined it over the decades, resulting in a modern SUV perfectly suited for civilian use. Today’s G-Class maintains its heft (nearly three tons) and rugged exterior, but it’s packed with luxury on the inside—keyless entry and ignition, navigation system and adaptive cruise control are just a few of the driver amenities. The G-Class has lived up to its utilitarian purpose, having been used in numerous capacities, from a courier vehicle to transportation for politicians and dignitaries.

ike many people after the September 11 attacks, Eric Yohe needed a life change. He relocated to Stowe, a small town he knew from many visits to Vermont. Leaving behind the hustle and bustle of Gotham, Eric bought a small luxury hotel. He settled into a new life that allowed the longtime Land Rover owner to pursue his other passion: teaching off-road driving. Years later, a friend shared an idea for an event that

The Muddy Chef Challenge has everything a Land Rover enthusiast can ask for—it’s three days of good food, friends and plenty of mud. The festival brings Rover owners to the Vermont outdoors, where they navigate their vehicles on off-road challenges and test culinary skills during a cooking competition. The best part? They use their Defenders, Discoveries, Range Rovers and more to help prep and serve their meals.

involved cooking. The concept morphed into the first Muddy Chef Challenge, held in 2008. Twenty enthusiastic Land Rover owners experienced three days of off-road driving challenges and a cooking competition—the catch being that all cooking had to be done in, around or powered by the vehicle—along with sporting field events including shooting and land navigation. The concept resonated with the community of Land Rover owners. “After all, when you go to Vermont they give you a Labrador Retriever, a shotgun and a Land Rover,” Eric quips. Eight years later, the Muddy Chef Challenge is regarded among Land Rover enthusiasts as “Top Gear meets Top Chef.” Eric runs the event with help from his wife, Kristen, who serves as one of the judges. Her company, GS Promo Source, is a sponsor. “It just grew,” Eric says. “I’m not particularly a gourmet, but the level of competition in the first event was something I had never seen before. People were producing gourmet meals of a quality I couldn’t believe. The weekend evolved into luxury camping, offroad driving and cooking.” Kristen, who has attended every challenge since the second, is a tough judge. “If I can make [the dish] better, it’s probably not going to be in the top three. People ask me how they know if they might win. I say if they see me swallow their food, it’s a good sign.” “Being a judge isn’t easy,” adds Eric, noting that contestants, who are encouraged to use locally sourced ingredients, cook everything from barbecued pork to fresh pasta to lamb balls with tzatziki sauce—all from the close quarters of their vehicles. “We have professional chefs competing, and they get beaten a lot. But people have a blast.” Some competitors spare no expense. They set up luxury campsites outfitted with creature comforts including leather chairs, carpets and $100,000 kitchens with all-stainless-steel construction.

One family presented a safari theme adorned with palm trees and multiple tents, while another produced a 1940s experience with costumes and an authentic English menu from the era. Prestige Land Rover is a title sponsor of the Muddy Chef Challenge. It’s a relationship that helped make last year’s event even more memorable. “Prestige brought 15 vehicles, including refurbished vintage Defenders, and was tremendously helpful in supporting us and providing us with everything we needed,” Eric says. “Prestige also put together a wonderful package of raffle items to benefit Autism Speaks, the charity we support. And they brought us a half dozen brand-new trucks to drive, so we could shuttle people around.” Eric is passionate about bringing a twist to each event, and his creative gears are constantly turning. “I’m working on an event where you don’t know where you’re going to go,” he says. “We tell you where to show up, and you immediately drive off-road without the benefit of directions. When you get to the other end we give you map coordinates to where the Muddy Chef site is.” Concludes Kristen: “The worst thing about Muddy Chef is that everything you eat for two weeks afterward tastes ‘off ’ because the people at the event are so creative with food. Some people test their recipes for months. I’ve had some phenomenal food and fun being part of it.” In an age when people are living life through a screen and socializing virtually, Muddy Chef Challenge reminds Land Rover owners—and us all—about what’s most important in life: friends, food and fun.

Like Prestige Land Rover, an event title sponsor, the Muddy Chef Challenge is a blend of equal parts ruggedness and luxury. From top: Dining means silver serving trays, bottles of wine and glasses for some (none for the dogs, though!); others gear up for the events with simple folding tables and camp chairs; everyone gathers together when the tasting competition starts.

THAT’S THE Spirit!
Fierce dedication helps a smallbatch Hudson Valley whiskey distiller thrive today with the artisanal methods of the past. By Darren Ressler

A
t the turn of the 19th century, New York produced more than half of America’s barley and rye, and the Empire State went on to become home to more than a thousand farm distilleries. Prohibition ended all that. But in 2002, craft distilling was made legal again in New York, inspiring many to open artisanal distilleries. Whiskey aficionado Jeff Baker, who hails from Buffalo and has a background in farming, was eager to join the fray. When he launched Hillrock Estate Distillery in 2011, he was adamant about controlling each step in the distillation process. He set up shop in a house in Ancram built in 1806 by a Revolutionary War captain who became a successful Hudson Valley grain merchant after the war. Product began flowing from the organic farm in 2012. “The house was originally located near my old farm and was dismantled and moved to its current site,” recalls Baker. “It took us more than six years to rehabilitate the fields, which had been conventionally farmed for many years.” “We wanted to make something truly world-class at our Hudson Valley farm, and the long history of grain and whiskey production in the area made the choice simple for us,” he explains. “Hillrock is the result of my passion for farming, fine wine and spirits, and the rich history of the Hudson Valley. Inspiration came
Hillrock Estate is the first distillery to offer a solera-aged bourbon, seen aging here. Solera is a process in which small portions of whiskey are removed over time and new whiskey is added. The spirit is then combined with mature seed bourbon and finished in Oloroso sherry casks.

from the great estate wineries in Burgundy, Piedmont and Napa Valley, which grow their own grapes and craft wines on the estate reflecting the unique local terroir.” In addition to sustainably growing on 350 acres, Hillrock Estate harvests and stores by individual grain field, traditionally floor-malts and smokes onsite, and pot-distills by hand in small batches. “I think our customers appreciate our commitment to quality and can taste the difference,” says Baker. Hillrock Estate is the first distillery to offer a solera-aged bourbon. Solera is a process in which a spirit such as new whiskey is moved through a stack of barrels. Barrels are never completely emptied, and more whiskey is slowly introduced. The bourbon is then blended with mature seed bourbon and finished in sherry casks. The result is a spirit that offers a floral nose with notes of dried fruit, brown sugar, caramel, oak and spice. “Farming and distilling are both complicated,” says Baker. “But we assembled a terrific team of experts to assist. I am still learning something new every day.” Renowned master distiller David Pickerell has been at Baker’s side since the beginning. Fourteen years in a similar role at Maker’s Mark provide him with invaluable expertise. “Moving to Hillrock gave me the opportunity to experiment and try new things,” says Pickerell. “I couldn’t do any of those things at Maker’s Mark.” Now available in 15 states and online shops, the Hillrock Estate Distillery brand has become the spirit du jour of discerning bourbon drinkers. Baker takes pride knowing his offerings have racked up more than 30 gold medals in major competitions “against established brands that are many thousands of times our size.” Looking ahead, Baker wants to expand internationally, provided he can continue to maintain quality control. “The biggest challenge is meeting demand,” he says. “We have been limiting distribution while holding the majority of our whiskeys in our barrel houses for longer-term aging,” he says. “We feel very fortunate to have built a loyal following.” This page, clockwise from top right: The fanlight and pediment above the front door of the 1806 Hillrock house are displayed on all Hillrock Estate Distillery bottles; tours of the distillery and estate are offered by appointment; the tasting room gives customers a chance to sample and purchase the distillery’s variety of whiskeys.
