second’s best

I

t’s human nature to want the best of both worlds—to have it all. Many property owners who buy second homes do so with a nod toward getting the lifestyle they think they’re missing in their primary homes. That’s why you’ll see city dwellers seeking out homes in the ’burbs or suburbanites either vying for a pied-à-terre in the city or a beachy retreat. There are three homes featured in this issue that will have you dreaming about a getaway of your own. A Whitehouse couple, for example, found their escape at the Jersey Shore, purchasing a brand new condo at the luxurious Asbury Ocean Club in Asbury Park. To decorate the space, they put Long Valleybased interior designer Marc Goldberg in the driver’s seat—with one directive: Don’t impede the view. The result of Goldberg’s simple yet

stunning design can be seen in “Ocean-View Devotion” on page 80. In “Hotel-Style Home” on page 74, we meet a family of jetsetters who live and travel internationally. They chose a Paramus home for their latest dwelling destination and, with the help of designer Elizabeth Akguc, they filled it with all the modern amenities typically found in a luxurious hotel. For these world travelers, the design always provides the welcoming feel of home. Then there’s a Colts Neck husband and wife who bought and rented out a three-bedroom apartment in New York City. Eventually, the couple decided to make the space their weekend getaway and enlisted Red Bank designer James Yarosh to give it an artful touch. Using the city as his inspiration, Yarosh turned the unit into the couple’s dream apartment. Read all about the work in “Gorgeous in Gramercy” on page 40. Even if you’re not the second- (or –third)-home type, many of us love the notion of a “staycation,” an opportunity to recharge your batteries by staying close to home. And what better way to do that than to have a space you consider an oasis from the hubbub of daily life. That’s what a city-dwelling family created when they combined two spacious apartments, including an expansive terrace. But Holmdel designer Yelena Gerts truly turned it into a getaway from urban life, embracing the openness of the space while adding warmth with touches like a marble fireplace and glass-sided staircase. Turn to “The Art of Urban Living” on page 62 to see Gerts’ project. There is really no right or wrong place to live. But the homes that work best are those where you, your family and friends feel comfortable. A place where you’ve established your own signature style (often with the help of a talented designer!) for living.

THE LATEST REPORTS ON THE DESIGN OF HOMES AND THEIR INTERIORS AND FURNISHINGS.

CHINTZ: A COMEBACK STORY

Style from the 1980s has been given a second life thanks to our current love of denim jackets, Stranger Things and, most recently, chintz. Yes, your grandma’s favorite floral, more-is-more fabric is making its big comeback in the design world. The ornate fabrics appeared on this year’s spring 2020 Paris Fashion Week runway in designs by Alexander McQueen, Chloé and Dries van Noten. Now we’re seeing chintz in its truest form—dainty accents in our homes (statement-making throw pillows, kitschycool wallpaper, curtained canopies over beds and much more). So why the sudden revival of these busy blooms? This year, we saw a major shift to maximalism—a style that the ’90s did away with in exchange for more subdued prints and sleek design. So dust off your favorite upholstered chintz chairs and bask in this trend that has returned to make our modern spaces feel quintessentially homey.

POTTER-Y BARN

You might be a muggle, but now you can feel like a true wizard thanks to Pottery Barn’s new collection of Harry Potter home décor. Paying homage to the fantastical movie franchise and series of young adult novels by J.K. Rowling, the magical collaboration features everything from charger plates bearing Dumbledore-approved spells to a “sorting hat” organizing snack tray to plush throw pillows for Hogwarts’ four houses. The most bewitching piece in the collection? A “floating” wax candle that levitates thanks to hidden magnets. Your guests will be so impressed with your deckedout décor, they’ll think your home is truly enchanted. The collection is now available at Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids, PBteen and Williams Sonoma both in stores and online at potterybarn.com.

DRESS YOUR TABLE

The Carolina Herrera fashion house has historically been a purveyor of statementmaking, larger-than-life garments on runways around the globe. Now Creative Director Wes Gordon has collaborated with Martina Mondadori Sartogo from design-centric British Cabana to bring that same timeless attitude to our dinner tables just in time for the holidays in the brand’s first-ever home collection, Carolina Herrera X Cabana. The tableware line features vibrant, exotic textiles and mix-and-match chic florals. From cocktail napkins to gilded goblets to chintzy plates, the collection uses bold primary colors for a fun motif that looks vintage and eclectic in the most masterfully modern way. The collection will be on display at the newly renovated Carolina Herrera flagship store on Madison Avenue in Manhattan. Shop the collection at cabanamagazine.com or head over to the store to ogle the gorgeous line in person.

HANGIN’ OUT

Forgive us, but there’s simply no excuse to plop your coat on the back of a chair anymore—the Coat Check Chair is here. Invented by New York-based product designer Joey Zeledón, the chair features a steel closet rod for a frame and a seat formed by six dozen plastic coat hangers held together by two soldered metal rings. The Coat Check Chair, which began as a Kickstarter campaign by Zeledón before becoming a signature item in his online shop this year, allows you to remove hangers from the chair as needed, making it both convenient and customizable. Sitting pretty in a Coat Check Chair of your own (in your choice of hanger color and polished or powder-coated steel) will run you a cool $900. For more info or to order yours, check out joeyzeledon. com/shop/coat-check-chair.

BARK AVENUE

Here’s something to wag your tail at: The American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog has recently moved back to its original home in New York City. (Founded in 1982, the museum relocated to West St. Louis County, Missouri, in 1987.) It houses hundreds of dog-inspired works, along with educational programs and interactive exhibits. (Care to learn what dog breed you most resemble?) Museumgoers can peruse everything from canine-themed oil paintings to ceramic sculptures that pay homage to significant pups throughout history. Visiting with little ones? Opt for a tour curated by “Arty” the dog—a virtual reality “guide” that can be accessed by the AKC’s official smartphone app. The museum will also run a special exhibit from Jan. 6 to March 29 of works that capture the bravery and stoicism of sled dogs in the Arctic. To plan your visit, go to museumofthedog.org. • American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog, 101 Park Ave., New York, N.Y., 212.696.8360

ANTIQUE CHIC

Forget those holiday displays filled with creepy animatronics and fake snow and opt for one that has some of the most opulent, historic antiques in Brick City. Visit The Ballantine House, a historic home that’s now a part of the Newark Museum from Nov. 20 to Jan. 5 for the “Feasting with Family and Friends” holiday exhibit, which features 1800s-era furniture and drapery to depict how Christmas was celebrated in Victorian-age Newark. Featuring a display that melds German, Dutch and English holiday traditions, the exhibit is an antique lover’s dream. Museum admission is $15 for adults; $8 for children, students and veterans; and free for Newark residents and active military. TEAMING UP

MUST-READS

For more than a decade, British interior designer Fiona Barratt-Campbell has led the pack with her eye for combining functionality with luxury. Her first book, Fiona Barratt-Campbell: Elemental (Rizzoli, $65), is a testament to her award-winning home projects and her timeless approach to simple, sophisticated design. Barratt-Campbell offers advice about her highly sought-after aesthetic in a tome that is truly a master class for any design lover. Speaking of simple, marble expert and stone purveyor Karen Pearse’s latest book, Rooms of Splendor: Decorating with Marble by the World’s Top Designers (Rizzoli, $60), celebrates the understated beauty of marble as one of history’s most prized and dynamic materials. Her book highlights spectacular uses of marble by international designers such as Vicente Wolf and Juan Pablo Molyneux as a source of inspiration for featuring this stone in just about any room in your home to create a space that truly rocks. Finally, wind down with a glass of chardonnay while you read up on design tips from Wine Cellar Design: A Crash Course to Thoroughly Understand It by editor Wang Chen (Artpower International, $40). Chen interviews master craftsmen on the best building techniques for this room in your home and has compiled hundreds of examples of private and commercial cellars that make the grade. He dives into the best ways to plan out your cellar’s lighting, temperature control, design and location to craft a dream-worthy nest for your vino.

HUES IN THE NEWS

While gray and tan dominated 2019, we’re gearing up for some trendy tints in the new Year. For your pots and pans, Le Creuset recently unveiled a new shade of its topof-the-line cookwear: truffle. The mauve tinge on this otherwise neutral shade of brown gives it a colorful upgrade that’s perfect for cooking up a hot meal during the cold-weather months. You can nab a Dutch oven, a stockpot and set of mugs in the timely color, along with an array of bakeware and even a pair of matching oven mitts. For your walls, Sherwin-Williams recently chose “Naval SW 6244,” the aptly-named dark blue hue, as its Color of the Year for 2020—the company says it has a “quiet confidence.” Similarly, Benjamin Moore crowned “First Light 2102-70,” a pale pink, as its Color of the Year, citing the soft shade as a “revitalizing” and “upbeat” take on white that has become more mainstream in recent years.

It’s a beautiful thing when your favorite designer and your go-to home décor brand join forces to craft a one-of-a-kind line of products. The latest meeting of the minds is London-based Greek fashion designer Mary Katrantzou’s line of area rugs by Rug Company. The collection features seven hand-knotted Tibetan wool and silk rugs in an array of organic-inspired motifs, including the whimsically colorful Bluebell Daydream and the celestial Sunray in a dusty pink or beige. Also joining forces are French interior designer Juan Pablo Molyneux, known for his love of maximalism, and Austrian porcelain purveyor Augarten for the “Roma” collection of porcelain tableware, featuring an art-deco-esque geometric motif. Sip in style when you opt for these teacups, as each piece is hand-gilded with 24K gold. Hey, teamwork makes the dream work.

A HOLIDAY BY THE SEA

Any true fan of Victorian design would be remiss to miss seeing the gorgeous Victorian estates in Cape May during the holiday season. Head down to Exit 0 to embark on a Christmas Candlelight House Tour in the town’s historic district—it runs on Dec. 7, 14 and 28 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Your ticket grants you a walking tour of centuries-old mansions, inns and churches in Cape May that have been architecturally preserved to maintain their historic charm—including the “haunted” Emlen Physick Estate—as they are spruced up with Christmas décor all month long. The tour concludes with a stroll through the center of town, where you’ll be greeted by cheery carolers and find lots of spots to cozy up with a warm beverage. For tickets, a complete list of tour dates and the buildings on display each weekend, go to capemaymac.org.

A PICTURE-PERFECT HOME

If you caught an episode of HGTV’s Brady Bunch home renovation special, you’ve probably thought once or twice about the dozens of other iconic homes from pop culture that would be incredible to wake up in every day. Well, porch.com asked its readers just that: “Which of film and television’s most recognizable homes would you like to live in?” According to respondents, Tony Stark’s high-tech abode from the Iron Man franchise takes the top spot for movie homes. Runnerups were the Chicago suburb mansion from Home Alone and Cher Horowitz’s Beverly Hills digs in the 1990 cult classic Clueless. As for the small screen, Uncle Phil’s sprawling California estate from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air takes top billing. Close behind were the Tanners’ Full House in San Francisco and Monica Geller’s purple-door Manhattan apartment from Friends.

MICRO-HOME, SWEET MICRO-HOME

Ironically, the movement for small-scale “tiny” homes has gained some huge popularity. Now, thanks to the convenience of online shopping, you can buy a pre-fab tiny house with your regular purchases on Amazon. The Nomad “Cube” Micro-Home is a modular tiny home with a modern wood exterior that measures 13.5 feet in width, diameter and height. The cube features a crisp white and stainlesssteel-accented living room, kitchen area, spiral staircase, bedroom and bathroom. The home comes in a DIY-styled assembly kit, and Nomad recommends that multiple people with “handyman-level skills” assemble it. For a house, the price is relatively small too—the Micro Home goes for $38,800 plus shipping costs.

A Colts Neck couple’s second home in Manhattan echoes the aesthetics of its charming neighborhood.

James Yarosh and these clients go way back. About 23 years ago, a Colts Neck art-collector couple stopped by Yarosh’s then-new fine art gallery in Holmdel. They eventually asked Yarosh to design their oldest daughter’s nursery, one of his firstever interior design assignments, and, pleased with his

Holmdel-based art dealer and interior designer James Yarosh worked with a Colts Neck couple, whom he first met more than two decades ago, on their Manhattan apartment, creating a flawless combination of fashion and function. “This is not a trendy first apartment; this is a second home of a nice caliber,” the designer says. “It needed to function to make it luxurious.”

bathroom, updated corner apartment in Gramercy. About a year before their tenants’ lease was up and they planned to move in, the homeowners and Yarosh began shopping for furniture and décor, using the view from the living area’s floor-to-ceiling windows as design inspiration. “My first impression of the home was the view,” Yarosh says. “First instincts are strong with me, because as an artist I trust my gut and try to make a dialogue with the architecture and the house.” So he introduced a gentle pink-and-yellow palette to mimic the red-brick buildings outside for a different twist on the tried-and-true concept of “bringing the outdoors in.” Patterns and textures inside the home also mirror the East Side scenery. For example, “that tone-on-

work, kept in touch and hired him for more projects over the years. Recently, with their two daughters moved out and in college, the husband and wife called Yarosh again to help them find—and, of course, redesign—their dream apartment in New York City, which would ser ve as their family’s second home and long-weekend/holiday getaway. “Having worked with them in the past I knew what they expected and what their tastes were, so it was about seeing the space and seeing what we could do with it,” Yarosh says. “The apartment was a financial investment, but more than that—an investment in their future.” The couple bought and eventually rented out a stunning 2,000-square-foot, three-bedroom, three-

tone color on the dining room chairs mimics the buildings outside,” says the designer. “The Hermès geometry wallpaper in the living area is a little grid of colors that looks like the grid of windows in the buildings.” The idea, Yarosh says, was to make it seem like the homeowners were living within this landscape. “Even the carpet is a big pink cloud!” he says. “You have a New York City apartment, you’re experiencing life, so on all levels it was trying to make that feel like a reality. The design was meant to be fun.” Bold pink Gucci wallpaper covered in white cranes, a backdrop to a vintage gold bar cart, adds whimsy to the space—“that large-scale pattern was bold enough to take on the Manhattan view,” says the designer—and is adjacent to a gallery wall

centered on the TV that comprises museum posters acquired on Yarosh’s international travels. Another apparent theme throughout the home is fashion and its intersection with art. “The sofa is a blush pink with a gold pin-dot fabric and little gold buttons down the side—it’s really lush, almost like red nail polish,” Yarosh says with delight. “It’s sort of like an evening dress—you know what I mean? Or a crushed red velvet tube top. It was fashionforward in my mind.” Artistic Frame dining chairs, with Dedar fabric resembling a Chanel jacket, have pink painted legs with gold caps like nude shoes. Hermès mohair swivel chairs, a custom-raised velvet polka-dot throw by Kazumi Yoshida for Clarence House and a snack table and martini set by Gucci amplify the home’s luxe, couture feel.

This page: A pair of incliners in a camel-colored herringbone weave and a duo of swivel chairs upholstered in Hermès mohair encourage conversation. Opposite: The designer Yarosh says the bold, large-scale crane wallpaper by Gucci is “about balance and artistry.”

guests came to town and chose multi-functional incliners and swivel chairs in the seating area to ensure that the couple’s adult kids (and their pals) would be comfortable. In every aspect of this “classic contemporary” design, though, artistic beauty is paramount. “Once you start living with art, you see what the benefits are and it’s like you can’t go back,” Yarosh says, explaining why he has so many repeat clients. “You feel like you’re part of it. There’s something to living with beautiful things.” Asked if he has any other projects planned with these longtime devoted clients, Yarosh demurs with a laugh: “Not right now but who knows? Maybe the daughters will get married!”

NJHome

Yarosh and his team went starker for the apartment’s three bedrooms and three bathrooms, giving the master bath a minor facelift with updated cabinetry. “The focus was on the main living spaces, so we bought beds, dressers, night tables and lamps (all by Kate Spade for Foundry Lighting) for the bedrooms and continued the color palette from the main room,” he says. “The bedrooms are simpler because we thought things could unfold depending on what the family’s needs were.” In fact, the design team considered the clients’ evolving requirements in many aspects of the project. They created a long custom dining table with multiple leaves for holiday dining, made certain that the sofa was a pull-out sleeper for when unexpected

old house, new outlook

A vintage Montclair home meets the 21st century in a modern redesign full of inspired touches—and lots of blue.

48

| NJHome

Text by Leslie Garisto Pfaff Design by Nara Callanan Photography by Lisa Russman Styled by Charlotte Safavi

The living room in this Montclair home has a modern maximalist vibe, derived from a dramatic mix of blue, black, white and metal. A Vanguard Yardley sofa in an arresting blue velvet is the centerpiece of the room; it’s flanked by two metal-trimmed Caracole armchairs covered in white canvas. Blue also makes an appearance in the designer’s custom window treatments, the Hair on Hide rug and a pair of stools from Chairish upholstered in a blue and white fabric, also from Hair on Hide.

| NJHome 50

This page, left: Homeowner Miki Berardelli on one of the “tuxedostyle” armchairs in the living room. She told designer Nara Callanan that she wanted blue, black, white and silver to predominate in the room. “Then she let me run with it,” says Callanan. Opposite: Comfort and ease dictated the design of the family room. Vanguard’s Harper sectional sofa provides the perfect family perch for watching football, while a suede ottoman between two Coco swivel chairs from Century is the designated spot for a friendly game of chess or backgammon. The wing chair, previously owned by the family, was recovered with comfort in mind in faux fur and vegan leather.

Montclair-based interior designer Nara Callanan to help them achieve their vision for it. Working with architect George Held, who gutted most of the interior, and large-space planner Claire McCreath, Callanan delivered a home that was a little bit historic, a little bit dramatic and exactly right for one hard-working couple, two teenage boys and a pair of rambunctious yellow Labs. Berardelli, who has a career in the fashion industr y, had a strong sense of what she wanted the house to look like. “I love a clean canvas and lots of white juxtaposed with a mix of metals and colorful abstract art,” she says—a look she calls “classic with a pop.”

NJHome

The town of Montclair is known for its graceful old homes and its creative, for ward-thinking residents. And when the latter decide to spruce up the former, the result is often a design that pays homage to the home’s historic architecture but takes an innovative approach to its interiors. That’s exactly what happened when Christopher and Miki Berardelli returned after several years in Florida to a 1942 brick colonial in Montclair that had been used for decades as a doctor’s office. They loved the house, built by celebrated local architect Francis Augustus Nelson, but knew the warren of rooms on the first floor weren’t conducive to 21st-centur y living. So they hired

| 51

| NJHome 52

“She wanted to bring an updated, modern vibe to the spaces,” says Callanan, “and to infuse the color blue throughout”—a nod to Berardelli’s love of the water and her days as a competitive swimmer (and, she says, “my Pisces personality”). In the living room, for instance, a blue velvet sofa is the centerpiece of the space, its cool, compelling color echoed in the room’s window treatments, throw pillows, denim-blue rug and a pair of ottomans upholstered in a blue-andwhite quatrefoil pattern. A stunning blue marble shower wall and backsplash in the master bathroom set the tone for pillows, lamps and a blue velvet bench in the adjoining bedroom. And the

same blue tones pop up in Berardelli’s office, in a velvet chair and ottoman and a pair of velvetupholstered stools. While blue flows throughout the design, its presence is minimal in the family room, which the Berardellis wanted to feel comfortable and casual—a spot for playing games, gathering with friends and watching football, a family passion. The large room, with one of its walls dominated by an expansive fireplace, was far from the “cozy and warm” space the homeowners envisioned. So Callanan chose a relaxing palette of grays, woods and greens, painting the walls a creamy white and the window trim and moldings a subtle gray.

This page: The windowless interior dining room derives its gleam from a mirrored cabinet wall designed by Parsons Cabinetry, and the gold runner in the center of a custom table co-designed by Callanan and the homeowners. Elegant Albany chairs from Fairfield, in black and white leather, add a formal note, while the Il Pezzo chandelier from Susan Dumont and an abstract painting by artist Lindsay Cowles introduce some modern glam. Opposite: At one of two kitchen islands, a trio of gray leather Chi stools from Nuevo sit beneath a gleaming Swarovski chandelier. While the rest of the kitchen’s countertops are marble, this one is softened with wood staining.

This page, left: The entryway is a testament to the homeowners’ comfort in mixing old and new and high- and low-end. The original banister and stairway share space with a modern curved console in gray leather from CB2 and a pair of rope-clad ottomans from Palecek. The artwork, from Chairish, offers a bright counterpoint to the predominant naturals in the space. Opposite: Berardelli wanted her home office to feel airy and feminine. She kept an old desk from Pottery Barn and asked the designer to find other pieces that would pop and bring the design up to date. The desired contrast was supplied by an eye-catching blue velvet chair and ottoman and a pair of stools, also in blue velvet, from Worlds Away. Throughout the space are photos of family and Miki Berardelli’s former associates from Ralph Lauren and Tory Burch.

| 55

interior room can feel dark and cramped,” notes Callanan, “but this one glows.” That same glow carries through to the foyer, where original architectural elements such as a gracefully cur ving banister complement more modern furnishings, including a similarly curvilinear leather console. The wall’s rectangular paneling adds a historic feel but was actually chosen by the homeowners. Underneath the console, a pair of rope-covered ottomans add a more casual note, picked up in the striped stair runner in hard-wearing wool (to withstand the inevitable pounding by the homeowners’ teenaged sons and their friends).

NJHome

Perhaps the most intimate space in the house is the dining room. As a nod to former employer Ralph Lauren, Berardelli opted to do three of the walls in dark wood paneling, which also helped achieve the “steakhouse feel” her husband was lobbying for. It’s an interior room with no windows, and yet it doesn’t come across as oppressively dark, thanks, in part, to a custom storage wall inset with a series of square mirrors. In addition, the live-edge table, designed in tandem by Callanan and the homeowners, features an inlaid gold band, which helps to brighten the space, along with custom lighting and a large, natural-fiber carpet. “An

| NJHome 56

The kitchen was an addition, and it too was designed to hold up to frequent use—Christopher is a dedicated chef—though its finishes are as elegant as they are practical. The challenge for Callanan, she says, “was adding some softer touches that still tied in with the general design,” notably a set of ultra-comfortable counter stools upholstered in a soft gray leather. While the first-floor space is generally expansive and open, the owners chose to keep the upstairs rooms small and cozy as originally designed, including the master bedroom, which Callanan brightened with white bed linens and trim and a grass cloth

wallcovering. The room is far from one-dimensional, however. A blue velvet bench and an upholstered headboard with modern channeling give the space what Callanan calls “Hollywood glam.” Glam rules the master bathroom, thanks to stunning blue marble in the shower and on the backsplash, a floating vanity and a strikingly modern, straight-edged soaker tub. The tub sits in a corner of the room under two large, traditionally trimmed windows overlooking the tree-lined streets Montclair is famous for—a reminder that even though the home has a bright, new aspect, it has an old soul.

This page: In the master bedroom, drama derives from touches of vivid blue in a bench from West Elm and a pair of Jonathan Adler lamps. While the room was designed to feel warm and cozy, the Palo Alto Contemporary bed from Marge Carson, with its channeled headboard, is dramatically modern. Opposite: Even with a floating vanity and rectilinear tub, the master bathroom feels soft and welcoming, thanks to wood-look floor tiles and the subtle sheen of the gray wallcovering from York.

Designer Melyssa Kelly took a transitional approach to bring the kitchen’s previous traditional style into a chic, modern redesign. “You need a balance of both styles,” she says. “Overall, it’s just a gorgeous kitchen, and it all works together well.”

This page, left: Kelly says a monochromatic gray Calacatta quartz with light gray veining designed by Aparna Vijayan of Ulrich Inc. in Ridgewood adds dimension to the perimeter counter. The stone isn’t too matchy-matchy with the warm gray hexagonal backsplash or cream cabinetry. chic Chapman & Myers pendant lights and azure squarebacked counter stools from Wisteria with the ornate window treatments. Of course, the true fusion of styles is apparent in the gorgeous island that juxtaposes contemporary Calacatta gray quartz and classic mahogany. Beautiful and functional, the homeowner says, the island comes in handy when her children invite friends over or when she hosts a buffet-style dinner for extended family. (She and her husband come from large broods and wanted ample seating.) Its shelves have become the homeowner’s new favorite spot to show off her vast collection of cookbooks. And it wasn’t just the décor that brightened up. Now, this family regularly discusses how their renovated kitchen has boosted their moods. “It’s so bright and warm, compared with how dark it used to be,” says the homeowner. “It has completely changed our mindsets.”

NJHome

For a family of five who loves to entertain, the kitchen truly serves as the heart of a home. That’s why one clan in Franklin Lakes decided to demo and redesign their favorite room. “They hang out in the kitchen and host a big holiday party every year,” says designer Melyssa Kelly of Melyssa Kelly Interior Design in Ramsey, who was brought in to update the family’s most sacred space. “They wanted to modernize it a bit and make it fresher.” Inspired by the blue ikat pattern on the home’s previous cornices, Kelly decided a neutral scheme of light gray and cream would serve as a perpetually blank canvas should the owners’ tastes change in the future. Pops of cerulean blue complement the house’s French provincial charm. To maintain the kitchen’s traditional feel, Kelly paired a round pine trestle table from Perigold and a quartet of whitewashed Ikea slip chairs. She then added a touch of mod with

the art of urban living

Text by Leslie Garisto Pfaff Design by Yelena Gerts Photography by Marco Ricca

A growing family proves that a charming in-town home can be gracious and spacious.

NJHome

Most of this apartment’s first floor is an open, loftlike space with designated living, dining, kitchen and entry zones. A white sectional sofa from Lee Industries dominates the main living area, adjacent to the kitchen, where three modern Visual Comfort pendants illuminate a quartz-topped island.

| 63

| NJHome 64

The city-dwelling family with a baby on the way had good luck when they teamed up with Holmdel designer Yelena Gerts, and good luck again when they were able to combine a penthouse and the apartment below it into a single grand space. Now they have all the urban sophistication they could ask for—and all the room they need too. “We wanted the new place to feel like a home, not an apartment—open, airy, with a lot of space for our daughter to run around in,” says the homeowner. To get that, two units were combined into one, featuring 3,700 square feet of indoor space and an 800-square-foot terrace. The first floor, with the exception of a powder room and guest quarters, is entirely open-concept, divided into a variety of dedicated spaces that include an entryway, a living

room, a dining room and a kitchen. An arresting glass-sided stairway leads to the second floor, comprising a master bedroom and bathroom along with a small bedroom and bathroom for the homeowners’ young daughter, as well as several access points to the outdoor space. While the main floor offers the kind of airiness one might find in a SoHo loft, it’s far from minimalist. “I wanted to get that ‘wow’ factor the minute you walk into the space by focusing not on a single point but on the room as a whole and its overall feeling,” Gerts says. And so your eye rests for a second on the gorgeous marble fireplace surround but is quickly drawn to the walls flanking it, covered in a paper whose randomly geometric pattern echoes the veining of the marble. Below it is a pale wood

This page: The marble fireplace surround is flanked by built-ins that echo the kitchen’s wood-grained cabinets. A chrome and glass console from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, set behind the sofa, adds visual interest and display space. Opposite: The custom chest, below a striking abstract painting, bears the same wood grain as the built-ins and kitchen cabinets and serves as a divider between the living and dining spaces.

The simplicity of the dining area is deceptive: Velvet chairs from RH set off a sleek modern RH table. Geometric candleholders from Z Gallerie offer a striking counterpoint to a pair of brass and crystal chandeliers from Visual Comfort. The wallcovering from Harlequin can also be found in the living area and the foyer, and the Siberian oak flooring in a herringbone pattern stretches throughout the open area of the main floor.

herringbone floor and a shag carpet that complements the nearby kitchen cabinets, some clad in a sleek white lacquer and others in an almost-rustic wood grain. Even small details are visually compelling, such as the multilayered metal handle on a clean-lined modern chest of drawers, an inset in the kitchen island that serves as both storage and display case and three gold-banded throw pillows on the sectional sofa. No wonder Gerts refers to her design as “eye candy.” It’s not just that she’s served up a feast for the eye, but also that her design allows each designated space to flow naturally into the next. The wood grain on the kitchen cabinets, for instance, is continued in a console table that functions as a separator between the living and dining spaces; the wallpaper next to

the fireplace surround is also a backdrop to the sleek dining table, and it covers a wall in the foyer as well. The paper is also echoed in the patterned frame of a large round mirror next to the front door. Visible through the glass railing of the stairway to the second level, the wallpaper effectively carries the eye upward. The homeowner aptly describes the apartment as “a work of art that we live in.” And like any compelling artwork, it derives some of its power from creative contrasts. Consider the dining area, with its minimalist, modern table surrounded by chairs upholstered in a luxurious velvet, and the simple-but-dramatic halostyle candleholders that sit beneath a pair of solidbrass and crystal chandeliers. Or consider the kitchen, where a trio of mid-century orbital pendants descend

This page: Custom cabinets from Absolute Kitchen offer a study in contrasts, some clad in white lacquer and others in a subtle wood grain. Soft touches include the upholstered stools and a striking threedimensional custom botanical artwork from Flowerbox Wall Gardens. in front of a vertical preserved-floral arrangement that looks like a lush dimensional painting. Upstairs, the space is less open but a visual delight nonetheless. In the master bedroom, for instance, the upholstered headboard extends beyond the bed to shelter a pair of nightstands as well, and a small electric fireplace is inset into a wall covered in a custom wallpaper studded with silver rivets. The adjoining grass-cloth wall adds to the textural interest. The flatscreen TV, however, is nowhere in sight, hidden in the ceiling and lowered through a lift-drop system. Eye candy abounds in the nursery, even though it’s the smallest room in the house. (It was intended to be a closet, but the homeowners wanted their daughter’s bedroom to be immediately adjacent to their own,

so Gerts carved out a tiny jewel box of a room and bath.) Blush pink predominates on the walls, a dragonfly-patterned throw, a geometric pink-and-cream carpet and a dimensional artwork featuring pink and white flowers. There’s a pink and gold velvet ottoman next to a snowy white wingback chair, and a series of open shelves in gold-rimmed white bearing books and whimsical artworks, including a diminutive Jeff Koons balloon dog. A small Parsons chair, upholstered in lavender velvet, sits underneath the shelving. The homeowners’ daughter, now a toddler, can often be found riding her motorized car throughout the house. Given the early formative impact of such a creative space, her need for speed will likely pair with a heart for art.

This page: The cozy nursery was carved from a large closet and includes a small bathroom as well. The blush pink on the walls is carried over in the custom velvet stool, the Kate Spade rug, and the custom dimensional artwork. Opposite: An RH shelving unit holds books and baubles above a childsized velvet Parsons chair.

Arresting textures abound in the master bedroom, including adjacent walls covered in silverstudded paper and grasscloth, both from Phillip Jeffries. The custom upholstered headboard stretches beyond the bed. The RH night tables would set a minimalist note except for their eye-catching metallic insets. An electric fireplace and a pair of crystal pendants add warmth and visual interest.

hotel-style home

A family of jetsetters with several abodes finds that a brand-new Paramus house best reflects their cosmopolitan chic.

74

| NJHome

Letty Rivera and Manuel Castillo have multiple homes and travel often. So when they chose Bergen County for their latest dwelling destination, the couple opted for a new construction home in Paramus with all of the modern amenities they and their three children—sons Gino, 25, and Manuel Andre, 17, and daughter, Ximena, 22—were used to enjoying as part of their cosmopolitan lifestyle. “They wanted a space that looked like the luxurious hotels they are accustomed to but that had the welcoming feel of home, even though it’s not lived in all year round,” says Elizabeth Akguc of Paramus-based Benchmark Interiors, who designed and furnished the family’s new home. “We have several homes but this one, our latest, has proved the most special because it’s the first where we started from zero,” says Castillo. “Working with a blank canvas can be as daunting as it is exciting,” says Rivera. “We could have had a lot of headaches along the way, but thanks to Elizabeth the whole process was virtually effortless and a pleasure.” The fact that her jet-setting clients were sometimes hard to reach when quick decisions were needed did create some challenging moments. Fortunately, Akguc’s “dream clients” had total confidence in her design sense. “From day one, she captured our vision and style—clean, modern, simple, elegant,” says Rivera. “Every time we met, she was on target

with curated samples and options that made the entire selection process very clear and easy.” Another advantage Akguc had going for her was that she teamed with her contractor husband, Peter Akguc of Benchmark Builders in Paramus, and the architectural pros at Plan Architecture in Little Falls to create the home from floor-plan beginnings. “My working with my husband as the builder on the project allowed us to have a comprehensive design throughout the project,” the designer explains. “Everything looks and feels well thought out, and there is a cohesive aesthetic to the space.” Taking primary inspiration from Rivera, whom she describes as a “glamorous and timeless beauty,” the designer sought to create a home that would survive the test of time while maintaining a graceful sense of space. Akguc chose a refined interplay of colors, textures, clean

lines and balanced proportions throughout the architectural and design elements to imbue the rooms with a unified aesthetic that seamlessly conveyed sophisticated simplicity and comfort. A muted monochromatic color story, subtly enhanced with soothing shades of blue and gray, adds to the harmonious flow, while strategic pops of color lend interest and contrast. The formal living room offers a pleasing balance of elements—the soft, luxe fabrics of the upholstered furniture live alongside the smooth, hard surfaces and clean lines of a credenza and circular coffee table. Akguc selected a navy velvet fabric on the Interlude Home Ava sofa and paired it with two beige Cotier chairs for contrast. The Wendover Art Group piece on the wall completes the look with a strong dramatic punctuation. With the luxury-loving lady of the house definitely

This page: The dining room’s soothing monochromatic palette brings a sense of harmony to the space. The neutral tones of the Interlude dining chairs and Century dining and buffet table give the homeowners the flexibility to add their favorite color accents with accessories, art and floral elements. Opposite page, top: “This project was a blank canvas,” says designer Elizabeth Akguc (pictured) of the Paramus home she designed for an on-the-go family with sophisticated tastes. “We went from a new home with completely empty rooms to one with entirely new interiors, including rugs, furniture, accessories, fixtures and artwork.” Bottom: The kitchen island, which was painted SherwinWilliams Naval, offers an interesting architectural element against the crisp white cabinets and airy Lucite counter stools.

on the wall of windows all help to make the space everyone’s favorite central family hub. The kitchen, another popular gathering spot, is as functional as it is elegant, with a streamlined utilitarian flow and sleek sophistication. The crisp white cabinets provide equal measures of storage and style, while the practical and roomy center island does triple duty as a prep/cleaning station and cozy eating area. To emphasize its importance, Akguc had the island painted in Sherwin-Williams Naval, an anchoring color that creates a grounding sense of comforting permanence and stability. Overhead, the Currey & Company brass light fixtures impart balance and a luminous glow to the cool colors in the space. The kitchen—like the rest of the house—provides a feeling of warmth and relaxed well-being and fits the family’s jet-setter sensibilities. “Elizabeth gave us a home that perfectly reflects who we are,” says Castillo. “We travel here once a month. Sometimes it’s just Letty and me; sometimes it’s with our children and their friends. But every time we come it feels comfortable and inviting. It feels like coming home.”

in mind, Akguc went for a “hotel chic” vibe in the master bedroom. “My client loves velvet, so we upholstered the Interlude bed with a custom velvet fabric we selected together,” the designer notes. “I brought in the navy blue on the window treatments as well as the Worlds Away nightstands. I love the contrast of color and texture—the soft gray velvet next to the navy lacquer nightstands and the lush Jaipur rug—that unifies the space.” In the daughter’s bedroom, the Jaipur rug, Bernhardt bed and the Worlds Away nightstands form the restful base, while decorative accents provide visual wake-up calls. “My clients wanted a fun and colorful room for Ximena,” says Akguc. “My inspiration for this space was the beautiful JohnRichard Seville artwork with all the pinks and blues, which I also used on the pillows, bench and John-Richard lamps.” In the great room, the softness of the charcoal gray Sunpan velvet chairs blends harmoniously with the textured plush light gray Interlude sectional. Custom walnut built-ins flank the fireplace and mounted flat-screen TV. ocean-view devotion A family’s Asbury Park vacation condo is designed around its best feature: a breathtaking view of the Atlantic. Text by Darius Amos Design by Marc Goldberg Photography by Vic Wahby

Neutral tones with pops of color, such as the indigo of six dining chairs by Industry West, don’t detract from the focal point of this Asbury Park condo: the oceanfront view. A large linear chandelier from Visual Comfort also keeps sight lines clear, as does the architect-installed column in the corner, which interior designer Marc Goldberg used to conceal the power bank for Somfy motorized curtains.

A Whitehouse couple didn’t have to travel far to find their ideal getaway: They discovered a perfect staycation spot in Asbury Park, a little more than an hour from their home. The husband and wife, in fact, were so dead-set on setting up in the Jersey Shore town that, earlier this year, they purchased a newly constructed, two-bedroom condo there sight unseen. What they knew about the place was little more than its size and location—along the beach on the sixth floor of the luxurious Asbury Ocean Club. So who better to put in the decorator driver’s seat than Marc Goldberg of Long Valley-based Interiors Matter? The homeowners, parents of three teenage boys, had years earlier entrusted several projects at their full-time Hunterdon County residence to the interior designer. Now considered a friend, Goldberg accompanied the family when they went to see the completed condo for the first time. “Everything was brand new, pristine and white,” he recalls. “And we all were bowled over by the view. The first thing you notice is the ocean and that wonderful sound.” Maintaining sight of the Atlantic was the couple’s only directive, as the homeowners “let me do my thing,” Goldberg says. Given a blank canvas, the designer immediately had a vision to create a space unlike typical shore homes. Architects built the condo with a modern layout and look, which Goldberg wanted to preserve by keeping the rooms airy and bright instead of muddling with them by adding an abundance of nautical details and seashells. “I didn’t want it to scream ‘beach’—that’s neither my style nor theirs,” he says. “And there was no need to overdo the theme because you immediately see the beach and the people on it—there are windows ever ywhere.” The couple purchased the condo primarily for quick getaways and NJHome

This page, top: Where space permitted, Goldberg hung artwork and wallpaper. Though wallpaper “can be scary” for some homeowners, the designer says the navy-and-white bird motif by Wallquest works in this space. Opposite page: Plentiful and durable seating is a must for the condo, which the homeowners will use for entertaining. entertaining, so Goldberg’s focus was on making an ideal great room. The main living area is closest to the terrace and will undoubtedly be one of the unit’s most-used spaces. With that in mind, the long end of an L-shaped, beige sectional sofa is positioned to face seaward; the shorter end gives guests direct sight of an adjacent wall where a big-screen TV is installed. “People need a good view—of the beach and the TV—so that dictated where we put the couch,” Goldberg says. A rattan armchair by Palecek with seafoam green, performance fabric cushioning is placed opposite the couch with its back almost entirely to the terrace. The chair, along with throw pillows and a trio of ornamental vases on the beige coffee table, provides one of few pops of color in the room. “For the most part, everything is neutral except for

a few small accessories in blue and green,” says the designer. “Those pieces really brighten the room.” Some of the bright hues carr y into the dining area, where Goldberg surrounded RH’s reclaimed oak plank table with six indigo schoolhouse chairs. “The condo can fit 12 to 14 people comfortably,” he says, “so I knew we needed a big couch, a big table and plenty of places to sit. And people will be coming up from the pool or beach, so we selected furniture with indoor/outdoor fabric. There’s ver y little in the space that’s not durable.” Four woven leather barstools sidle up to an expansive kitchen island, where conversation, food prep and meals all take place. The developer-designed space isn’t equipped with many upper cabinets and storage areas, but Goldberg found areas for personalization. A

This page: Goldberg kept the original clean white motif in the kitchen, adding four white woven leather barstools by Interlude Home as main seating around the island. Though designed with few cabinets, the kitchen has plenty of shelf space to display dinner and glassware. stainless-steel range hood, for example, is fixed with shelving to keep and display dinnerware. “We also left a mark on the walls,” he adds. “I wanted to have some art and color, so wherever I could hang art or wallpaper, I did. The idea of wallpaper can be scary, but the one we chose—Wallquest’s white with a scattering of navy birds—connects with the space.” Goldberg took the same approach in both bedrooms. A colorful 54-inch-square painting is the focal point of the other wise neutraltoned master bedroom. Robert Abbey lamps and custom accent pillows along the king-sized bed and upholstered headboard pick up hues from the specially made artwork. At night, motorized sheer curtains by Somfy—which are found throughout the condo—can be closed, giving the room a “Paris hotel vibe,” the designer says. With a tufted brown leather bed, the second bedroom has a masculine feeling. “They wanted the room to be for the boys, so they let me give it a youthful look,” Goldberg says. Blue is the dominant color in the space—it’s reflected in the couch, rug, bedding and wall art. “And some orange on the couch and bedding adds a little surprise and a huge impact in the space,” he adds. The entire design project came together in two to three months. As they did while the condo was under construction, the homeowners stayed away while Goldberg completed the decoration. “I’m a little bossy,” he jokes. “I didn’t want them to see it while it was coming together.” Their impression when the work was done? “They were flabbergasted,” says Goldberg. “It was a great reveal.” This page, above: A custom bed with an upholstered headboard from Bassett Furniture in the master bedroom overlooks the ocean. Opposite page: A tufted leather bed and accompanying side chair from RH Teen give the second bedroom a masculine feel for the family’s three sons.
