ERE AT NJ HOME, IT’S OUR MISSION TO INFORM AND INSPIRE. EACH

issue introduces readers to Garden State homes that show the rich possibilities of interior design. Whether it’s new construction or a renovation, a whole house or apartment or a single room, we highlight the work of top designers who bring to their assignments an acquaintance with both what’s current and what’s unchanging. But sometimes there’s a grain of sand in the oyster—a challenging feature, circumstance or wish that a designer must contend with. Let’s call it the “X factor.” Take, for example, the recently renovated Allendale home you’ll read about in “Everything Says ‘Welcome!’” on page 48. The goal was to make the house feel more open, warm and inviting. But when the homeowner, who likes fish, sought to have a built-in aquarium in the master bedroom, that plan was vetoed, in effect—by the fish. “Fish are social animals,” the aquarium builders protested, explaining that the creatures craved being in the center of things. The solution: building an aquarium into the wall right in the first-floor great room—a distinctive feature that sets this home apart even from its equally beautiful peers. With a new pool house for the pool and a first-floor powder room done in shiplap, the home is now a delight for the family’s many guests. (Fish aren’t the only social ones—or even the only waterborne!) In the Sparta home described in “Echoes of Nature” on page 72, it’s a 54-inch canvas illustration of cows that is the conversation starter. The kids (ages 3 and 7) love it. The homeowner at first wasn’t sure. But the cows, she says, “always stuck with me.” Now they contribute unforgettably to a design that evokes the couple’s love of the outdoors—and nearby Lake Hopatcong. Does every home require a Yamaha Disklavier piano? Certainly not, but in “Designer’s Dream” on page 88, a passion for that instrument triggered the transformation of an underused sitting room in Upper Saddle River into an exciting music room that, as our writer says, “strikes all the right chords.” It makes the house memorable too. Achieving a “Florida feel” in an elevator-equipped cliffside home in Edgewater? (Page 58) Creating a kitchen where everyone (including a 15-year-old boy) can cook at once? (Page 84) Deploying furniture that’s “printed” by a 3-D printer? (Page 24) These are challenges that, once mastered, can become marks of distinction. Of course, I’m not suggesting that every homeowner should go looking for an idiosyncratic element. I’m just saying it’s wise to be alive to serendipity. That quirky feature or unusual requirement that has you and your designer scratching your heads may not be a problem after all. It may be a gift. It could be the “X factor” that helps make your home special.

THE GUIDE

What’s up, what’s new and what to do.

FROM HOME OFFICE TO HOME DÉCOR

DRESS UP YOUR DOOR

You may have stationery from Rifle Paper Co. in your desk drawer, but soon you’ll be able to have those pretty prints elsewhere in your home too. In collaboration with home furnishings firm Cloth & Company, the brand has just debuted its first-ever furniture collection, which includes chairs, ottomans, headboards, beds, benches and accent pieces such as room dividers. Each item is in one of Rifle’s 15 signature cheerful floral prints and maximalist designs, and they’re made-to-order so they’re perfectly bespoke for your space. Shop the full collection online at riflepaperco.com.

You love the sophisticated look of a tufted headboard or a pair of chairs with funky printed fabric. A little upholstery goes a long way in giving a room a softer, more refined appearance, so why limit the design detail to furniture? You can set the tone for a relaxing room by applying upholstery to your doors; it will make a grand entrance to a library or a glamorous passage into a walk-in closet. One of the easiest ways to do this is by applying upholstered panels with luxurious textures such as velvet or striking features like nailhead to the door. Companies like BravoAV in Bernardsville use them for home theater doors. “Outside the theater is where the anticipation starts...so consider the design leading into the theater,” says owner Tom Curnin.

A POP OF COLOR

NJHome

It’s striking how fun, bright accessories can add a much-needed burst of color to an all-white kitchen. And two notable kitchenware brands are giving you options. KitchenAid and Moccamaster, known for its coffee brewers and grinders, have teamed up for a colorful collaboration in kitchen appliances. This means you can purchase a stand mixer and a coffee maker in the exact same shade: beetroot, a deep reddish purple, which also happens to be KitchenAid’s 2022 Color of the Year. Both are available at crateandbarrel.com. Feeling green? Le Creuset is too, as the French cookware line unveiled its new colorway: olive. Soup pots, mugs, skillets, a cast-iron round oven and more of the brand’s signature items are all available in the festive hue, and can be purchased at lecreuset.com or at Williams-Sonoma.

THE GUIDE

MUST-READS JUNE HOME SALES

Summer is hot, hot, hot, and New Jersey’s real estate market is trying to keep up. Though not as robust as it was a few months ago, the market is still strong thanks to low interest rates and limited inventory. Are you thinking of buying or selling this season? Before you decide, consider New Jersey Realtors’ real estate stats for single-family homes from June 2021:

Home entertaining is pretty much safe again, so it’s time to spruce up your space before guests come over. In The Elegant Life: Rooms That Welcome and Inspire (Rizzoli New York, $65), Alex Papachristidis, founder of an eponymous NYC design firm, shares recent projects that mix elegant and modern styles. There’s inspiration for every home, whether you’re redoing a beach house, a suburban estate or a swanky apartment. Meanwhile, Sarah Blank of Sarah Blank Design Studio in Greenwich, Conn., details the rules she employs for every space she works on in her new book Classic Kitchens for Modern Living (The Images Publishing Group, $60). Following her own principles, Blank creates beautiful and functional kitchens for homeowners while inspiring others to do the same. But if you’re one who wants to break away from traditional design, The New Design Rules: How to Decorate and Renovate (Penguin Random House, $23) by HGTV designer Emily Henderson and award-winning writer Jessica Cumberbatch Anderson can guide you through your next reno. The authors explain what can be an overwhelming process, from hiring contractors and architects to picking paint and light fixtures to creating a home that shows your style and personality.

PRINTING’S NEW DIMENSION

18,452

Three-dimensional printing isn’t just something your kids use in STEM classes—it’s a trend that is here to stay. In fact, many technology-savvy companies have been introducing décor and even furniture that’s 3D-printed—that is, for which a three-dimensional object is created from a digital file. The benefits of these products? They’re faster to produce, better for the environment and both distinct and dramatic, aesthetically speaking. Of course, there are downsides to this production method, such as having limited materials available for printing, and the process can be expensive. Plus, mass production is out of the question for obvious reasons. Still, from lamps to planters, chairs to storage items, 3D printed pieces undeniably make a statement, as these few picks prove:

The number of single-family homes for sale, down 31.1 percent from June 2020.

9,168

The number of single-family homes that closed, up 31.4 percent from the previous year.

11,937

New listings of single-family homes, down 1.3 percent from the year before.

$575,768

Average sales price of a singlefamily home, an increase of 29.2 percent over 2020.

30

Average days properties had been on the market, down 51.6 percent from the previous year.

WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD

After closing its retail shop in Marlton during the pandemic, interior design and furniture store Monroe & Kent is back and better—and bigger—than ever. This spring the company opened a 10,000-square-foot outlet store in West Berlin, where customers can browse furniture, lighting, décor and more. Shoppers may take home their purchases the same day or have them delivered a few days later (if your piece won’t fit in your car, for example). M&K is also relocating its West Berlin design studio to this store, which means you can customize your furniture too rather than just buy off the rack. Questions? Give them a call at 609.474.3602.

THE GUIDE

HEALTHY @ HOME

Health and wellness is hardly a new phenomenon, because who wouldn’t want to live a happy lifestyle that focuses on physical, mental and social well-being? But since the pandemic, interior design has emphasized health and wellness too, which means creating a home environment that’s more conducive to this idea of all-around happiness. This could mean making a minor move like adding more greenery to your living room, or getting a vitamin C showerhead to improve the water quality, says Blanche Garcia, interior designer and owner at B. Garcia Designs in Montclair. Others may consider a more drastic project reno, like building out a lounge and game room or even a meditation space where you can enjoy privacy. “Another big trend I’m noticing from a wellness perspective is bringing the outdoors inside by using biophilia, natural colors and natural materials more so than before,” says Garcia. “And this year alone I have noticed people leaning away from the white kitchen toward earthier-toned kitchens in the green and blue family, which provide a more balanced energy level throughout the space.” Garcia adds that people are also not just choosing pieces for their home that look good, but that feel good too. “People pay more attention now to the color of the sofa, for example, the fill of the seat, the materials and how they will feel actually living with that furniture,” she adds. “This concept is more about an energetic and emotional shift in the way design is personalized versus a one-size-fits-all trend. Our home is the largest support system to a healthy and happy life.”

EVERY GARDEN HAS ITS SECRETS

26 NJHome

New Jersey’s great gardens are in full bloom, and now is the time to take in all their beauty. Unlike the past two years— when many were closed because of the pandemic—these perfectly manicured and maintained grounds are open to provide serenity and inspiration for your own backyard. KITCHEN RENO? THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT

In 2022 a robot can deliver your Uber Eats order to your door— and artificial intelligence can design your kitchen. A new app called Skipp is changing the kitchen redesign game as we know it. Essentially, the app uses a surveyor with a camera that captures a 3D image of your kitchen. The user reveals what he or she wants the renovation to look like (using inspo from social media, for example) and the budget, and then an algorithm generates a new model of the space. Another algorithm then delivers virtual blueprints and, finally, a real human architect looks over the final design before you can get started on your project. “I love the idea of integrating tech and design when remodeling a kitchen,” says Jodie O’Connor, owner of Jodie O’ Designs in Whippany. “There are so many details to consider, thus the process becomes very time-consuming. If AI technology can methodically plan the client’s inspiration into reality without all the mistakes, that would be fantastic for the client and the designer as well!” The service costs $399 for the robots to generate your new design; users can also pay extra for (virtual) facetime with a human.

GOING WILD

Setting up a wildlife reserve isn’t just the province of large nonprofits and conservation groups—any New Jersey homeowner can certify his or her yard as a wildlife habitat. What’s the benefit? Backyard habitats help restore diminishing resources for many animals, including bees, butterflies and birds. Honeybees, for instance, not only produce healthful (and delicious) honey, but also help pollinate and fertilize plants that yield fruits, vegetables and seeds. It’s also a fun outdoor activity for the family: Build and install a nesting box for birds, assign tasks like keeping feeders full or tracking plant life while removing non-native species. To set up Certified Wildlife Habitat with the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), the largest private conservation org in the U.S., confirm that your space provides wildlife with food, water, shelter and a place to raise young and uses sustainable practices. Verified owners will receive a placard from the NWF to incorporate into their gardens.

ASK THE EXPERTS

DESIGN GUIDANCE YOU REQUESTED Freda Howard, Brittany Rae and Jason Bonura respond to reader questions on outdoor spaces, kitchen hardware and French doors.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO ELEVATE AN OUTDOOR SPACE

THAT IS USED FOR BOTH RELAXING AND ENTERTAINING?

To create a versatile and well-appointed outdoor space, approach it as you would any room in the home. Choose a color palette that complements the home’s exterior and the surrounding greenery. Seating is the most important element of any exterior space. A sectional sofa provides sufficient seating for everyone to spread out, as well as a place to recline and relax. Look for performance fabrics that are stain-, fade- and mildew-resistant. Accessorize with fun pillows that can be switched out each season. Invest in quality umbrellas that protect from harsh UV rays and do not absorb water. My favorite umbrella fabric is olefin, which has amazing UV resistance and dries quickly when wet. It is a strong, cleanable fabric that is available in many colors at every price point. Brighten up the space with flowers in beautiful pots that you can change with the seasons or your mood. Most important is to enjoy your space! —Freda Howard, Allied ASID, Freda Howard Interiors; fredahoward.design

HOW CAN I HAVE FRENCH DOORS

I’M VERY ATTRACTED TO STAINLESS-STEEL

A frosted window tint, the kind that is often used in bathrooms, is an option that my clients have chosen when opting for French doors. Not only does it keep out unwanted eyes, it can help make an accent wall in a small space. A less permanent solution would be a sheer curtain. It’s inexpensive and easy to do when you need privacy for a portion of your day. You change the look with the simple use of a tied ribbon or fabric in the middle, creating an hourglass shape. Roller blinds are a more traditional way of assuring privacy with your French doors. This classic blind style rolls down from the top of the window or door and can be made of fabric in an array of colors, patterns and finishes, making it the most versatile option in blinds. —Jason Bonura, Allied ASID, Innovative Home Designs; innovative-homedesigns.com

WARE, WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON

AND STILL PROTECT MY PRIVACY?

NJH.su22.ask the experts 4.indd 28

APPLIANCES, BUT FOR KITCHEN HARDSILVER OR GOLD?

It’s a common misconception that because you install stainless-steel appliances, you must also use silver-toned hardware throughout your kitchen. I task all my clients early on with the “homework” of assembling pictures of spaces that bring them joy. Often, those spaces, even in kitchens, are a mixture of colors, textures and concepts. I point out how each of those components shines in its individual element. When I design a kitchen, I treat the cabinetry as furniture. Each functional zone, finish change or existing architectural feature has the opportunity to introduce intentional design. Stainless steel is a constant thread. It’s like denim jeans with sneakers or a fantastic pair of Louboutins—the accessories matter, but the denim remains. —Brittany Rae, Allied ASID, Rae Design Group; raedesigngroup.com

From one of our satisfied customers. We were interested in an Organic Mattress Inc. innerspring mattress set, so made the lengthy trip from western New York to the Hibernate Bedding store in Bernardsville, NJ. Our experience with Pam and her operation was well worth the investment of our time. From the moment we entered the store, Pam was welcoming, attentive and worked hard to understand our needs and concerns. The "white glove" delivery process was flawless. EVERYTHING SAYS ‘WELCOME!’ A thorough renovation of an Allendale family’s home makes it ideal for inviting guests in to share the fun.

In this renovated Allendale home, the kitchen derives its warmth from the use of wood and navy on the cabinets, brightened by the white Caesarstone quartz countertops, the white Fireclay tile backsplash and a bank of large windows that open onto the backyard.

A house in Allendale is a surprise: an aquarium. It’s an unexpected feature for visitors to

50 NJHome

T THE HEART OF A RECENTLY RENOVATED

NJH.sp22.Z+ architects .indd 50

encounter, and it was also a surprise, originally, for one of the homeowners from his wife. He loves fish, and so she imagined adding a built-in aquarium to the master bedroom as part of an extensive renovation they were planning. But the aquarium builders told her the tank would be better sited in the main living area. “Fish are social animals,” they explained, “and if you want them to come out when you’re around, they need to see you more often.” So

the aquarium is now an intrinsic element in the first-floor great room, built into a partial wall between the living area and the kitchen. As it happens, the homeowners, too, are social animals, but the colonial-style house they’d lived in for many years had never been sufficiently expansive—or comfortable—for ambitious entertaining. So when they embarked on the renovation, the idea of welcoming friends and family—including the friends of their two daughters, one in middle school and the other a high-schooler—was uppermost in their minds. With their input, architect and designer

But the stone fireplace with its bluestone mantel and the dark wood coffee table from Restoration Hardware offset what otherwise could have been a too-cool palette. Opposite, bottom: The custom window benches in the living room, upholstered in fabric from Jaipur, add extra seating for guests or, thanks to two sconces from Visual Comfort, a cozy place to curl up with a good book.

NJH.sp22.Z+ architects .indd 52

Mary FitzPatrick Scro of Z+ Architects in Allendale, helped them create a house that’s not only welcoming but also bright and warm in equal parts. The kitchen is a perfect example. While all the walls in the open-concept living area, including those in the kitchen, are painted white, Scro thought an all-white kitchen wouldn’t suit the homeowners. “They’re very warm and down-to-earth,” says the designer. “They could have done anything they wanted, but they created a space that reflects their personalities.” Most of the cabinets are a matte navy blue, while the island and the cabinet enclosing the refrigerator are a light oak. “The wood really brings warmth and a casual feeling to the house,” says Scro. Thanks to white quartz countertops and a bank of large windows over the sink, the room is nevertheless light and bright. In an adjoining breakfast area, whose sliding doors open onto

a back porch and provide an additional source of light in the already airy space, a round table of pale wood and dark painted-wood chairs echo the cabinets. The living room is particularly warm and welcoming, with a large sectional sofa and built-in upholstered seating under two windows to the side of the stone fireplace. The built-ins are designed to accommodate guest overflow and to provide a comfortable place for family members to read or lounge—or, because the windows above them overlook the front of the house, to await the arrival of friends and family. They also incorporate cabinets that provide storage for blankets and other cozy essentials. Scro notes that, in spite of its homey feel, the house incorporates high-quality materials, including the multicolored stone on the fireplace surround, which offers a warm counterpoint to the white walls and trim. A sense of playfulness pervades the

NJHome

The pool house was designed to reflect the exterior architecture of the main house; a covered patio protects loungers from the sun or the rain.

This page: Everything about the pool house bathroom, from the pale blue vertical-shiplap walls painted in Sherwin-Williams’ Rainwashed to the vintage-feel tiles from Nemo, was meant to communicate fun—a notion that, in fact, is inscribed into the floor with the tiled message “SUN + FUN.” Opposite page: Details like a vintage-style Smeg refrigerator and outdoor barn lights, both in bright colors, give the kitchen a fun-yetfunctional vibe.

space. The first-floor powder room, for instance, is walled in shiplap, painted an arresting forest green that highlights a farmhouse sink housed in a custom pale wood vanity. On the wall across from the sink, an arrow-shaped sign announces “pool” and points to the pretty backyard just beyond (and yes, the pool). A major element of the renovation, and one designed very much with entertaining in mind, was a new pool house. With its standing-seam metal overhang, this structure’s exterior mirrors that of the main house. But inside is a space that was designed as much for fun as it was for utility. The kitchen area, for instance, features a mint-green, vintage-style Smeg refrigerator, and outdoor barn lights, painted a cyan blue, illuminate the sink and main food-prep area. Shiplap on the cathedral ceiling lends a beachy feel, and on the floor, bright porcelain tiles are slightly textured to provide some grip for wet feet. The design of the bathroom/ changing room, too, is a nod to the welcome that’s at the heart of the space. Vertical shiplap painted mint green continues the beachy ambience. But the floor says it all: Embedded in the vintage-style white tile is a message that perfectly sums up the house vibe: “SUN + FUN.”

MIAMI MEETS THE PALISADES A builder’s Florida-style home needed to be a showpiece worthy of the splendid views. TEXT by MICHELLE JONES DESIGN by JACLYN ISAAC

PHOTOGRAPHY by MIKE VAN TASSELL

No, it’s not Miami, but designer Jaclyn Isaac draws subtly from the South for a summery feel tailored to Edgewater. Cream upholstery and natural tones such as olive, blue and taupe create a modern but earthy style in a builder’s home meant to be a showpiece.

the design completed in 2019. “Although we build for others all the time, I wanted my home to have a few special touches and feel like a true showpiece.” Isaac’s team delivered, he says, with “an elegantly designed, modern, masculine space that made me feel welcomed the second I walked in the door.” Because Iovino also spends time at his Florida home, lifestyle demanded “relatively low-maintenance,” Isaac says. So, although this is a bachelor’s home free from kids slopping ice cream on the couch, Isaac turned to easy-care performance fabrics. She also avoided high-maintenance marble for living-area floors, imitating stone with largeformat porcelain tile in cream.

NJHome

Maybe another designer would have been cowed by the prospect of turning a builder’s own home into a jewel guests would find dazzling. But Jaclyn Isaac, principal at Shrewsbury-based Doni Douglas Design, took it in stride. The result is an edgy modern gem with a South Florida flavor—think cream-colored seating with pops of color— reined in to reflect the Hudson’s Gold Coast. This cliffside retreat with an elevator features four tiers, from a ground-floor garage to what Isaac calls the “bachelor’s patio,” with NYC views guests can savor from the hot tub. “Doni Douglas nailed the creative brief,” says the owner, Lou Iovino of Teaneck’s IP Builders, applauding

Creating a Miami vibe in New Jersey was a challenge Isaac met by steering clear of the bright oranges and pinks that might have been over-the-top. Instead, the living room draws from natural influences, with blue-green swivel chairs and velvet pillows in olive and taupe, reflected in Loloi’s Dreamscape rug. Although Iovino initially wanted white couches, his designer saw that as “a bit harsh,” so the custom sofa is a cream that contrasts well with the bountiful black. The art and accessories add an earthy touch, as do the plants. Of course, the biggest shoutout to nature is the view, which the low-profile chairs help preserve. As though working in tandem with generous windows, a mirrored coffee table bounces light around the room. In the dining area, a taupe pattern accent wall by Heather Jozak Studios leads the eye toward a simple wood table with modern chairs of black leather and curved chrome by Safavieh opposite a banquette with a geometric twist on contrasts. Etched-glass pendants by YLighting satisfy the client’s penchant for black fixtures. Designed for a man who loves to cook, the kitchen is a balancing act of masculine and softer elements such as the black-andwhite oak cabinets by Imperial Kitchen & Bath. Isaac used black for cohesiveness within the open plan and painted the back wall identically to make the cabinets “kind of visually float away,” she explains. For a sleek effect, the cabinetry is sans hardware. Completing the style, slabs of Calacatta-image quartz deliver

For a resort-like experience, this scenic epicenter boasts low-maintenance outdoor furniture in bright white and teal, concrete planters, a hot tub and a grill. Another highlight of the home’s fun, modern design is the master bathroom, where a cracked-effect tile by Faber is emphasized with black grout above the espresso-finish vanity. In the end, the builder known for modern, high-end style got exactly what he was looking for: a showpiece. And though not on the design team, Edgewater’s famous cliffs turned it all up a notch with nature’s contribution: a wondrous view.

smooth elegance to backsplash and countertops, while woven black stools by CB2 play up contrasts. Born to party, the fourth-floor bachelor patio is an indoor-outdoor haven for good times that wows with an inlaid “rug” of cement tile by Cemento. “It’s a cool floor inlay, almost like an art piece, that we built the room’s color scheme around,” says Isaac. Edgewater-based Imperial did the cabinetry for a bar/workstation that features a beverage fridge and brass shelving by CB2. Although there’s plenty of comfy seating inside and a Samsung TV that doubles as zebra art, guests won’t want to miss the view from the patio.

and faced a more extensive design challenge, her mother stepped in, offering the right designer for the job: Daniella Sacco of White House Luxe in Fairfield. The results fit the family of four to a tee because Sacco was able to reflect their interests. Danah loves Lake Hopatcong (where they also have a cabin), while husband Ed takes to hiking, hunting and the outdoors. Sacco celebrates For a dining room that reflects her clients’ personalities, designer Danielle Sacco infused natural elements such as a spa-blue grass cloth above dove-white wainscoting. The décor combines with the glamour of a Minka Lighting chandelier over a farm-style table for a room rich in character.

these passions in a natural yet transitional décor. At the heart of the family room is a fieldstone fireplace with a hand-hewn beam mantel, which Sacco styled with pillar candles, a mirrored starburst sculpture by John Richard and color-burst abstract art. The spa-blue sectional by Century is oversized for the whole family to share, with a fun pop from accent pillows in raspberry, teal and brown. Blue tones spread serenity with the Taylor King swivel glider and Vanguard cocktail ottoman, while 2-inch-thick glass end tables add a “unique” touch. “We were definitely making it more current and modern with the art and the accessories,” Sacco says. And she did that while still bringing in nature with the rough-cut oak entertainment console and woven wood blinds. For Danah, who loves the lake, the textured carpet creates a water effect. Even the woodsy view

outside contributes to the theme. The dining room also reflects nature with its grasscloth walls and Monet-watercolor-like floral draperies, both Thibaut, along with a 54-inch-wide canvas of cows—yes, that’s right, cows. A conversation starter over the mica-finish buffet, they’re beloved by the children, ages 7 and 3. Danah says that though she was initially hesitant, “the cows always stuck with me.” A three-tiered crystal chandelier “gives it a little bit of glam over this cherry farm-style” dining table with oatmeal-colored modified wing chairs and a Persian rug, says Sacco. Danah says she couldn’t be happier with Sacco’s intuitive design. “Every time we come home it feels like home,” she says. In this case, Mother really did know best.

GOODBYE, TRADITIONAL!

The empty-nesters’ new contemporary home in Monroe wasn’t what they were used to. Happily, a designer’s savvy touches calmed their jitters. TEXT by DONNA ROLANDO

DESIGN by SHEILA RICH

A change. They had traded their Staten Island home of more than 30 years for active-adult living in Monroe. Now, COUPLE OF EMPTY-NESTERS STOOD READY TO EMBRACE

76 NJHome

instead of a Tudor-style home with traditional décor and a Tuscany palette, they had a contemporary open floor plan and the desire to venture out into a new look. “I wanted to change my style,” says the homeowner. But she confides she found the open space a “bit intimidating” until designer Sheila Rich of the eponymous Monmouth Beach firm came on board. “She’s a lifesaver,” she says. Rich knew how to overcome the challenge of an open floor plan with a unified approach. She coordinated colors (predominantly pale gray walls with semi-gloss white trim) and used common elements such as the wide-plank wood floors. To define each space, she introduced area rugs— with individual personalities. Although the homeowners welcomed the metamorphosis in design, Rich knew they would need guidance to “bridge the gap” beyond strictly traditional. The answer was a transitional design in which classic elements like millwork and wainscoting warm up modern features such as high ceilings. “I like to

NJH.sp22.shiela rich.indd 76

With 20-foot ceilings, the great room in this Monroe home needed more warmth than the marble fireplace alone. So designer Sheila Rich created a cozy cluster of seating, letting the gray-on-gray rug have a grounding effect.

ernous effect of the two-story room,” Rich says. (Throughout the house, window shades are motorized, and custom drapes in the same toneon-tone fabric are teamed up with brushed-nickel rods and crystal finials for consistency.) With a tray ceiling and art that reminds the homeowner of her granddaughter (one of nine grandkids), the dining room clusters Old Biscayne furniture over a honeycomb pattern wool rug for intimacy, a subtle backdrop for navy chairs. think of this as timeless,” Rich says. Floating the furniture away from the walls was another technique Rich used to take the chill out of contemporary. This proved instrumental in the great room, where she nested the Vanguard sectional, the geometric chenille club chair and the ottoman near the marble fireplace over a gray-ongray Masland rug. “Everything is quiet and soft, and there are some punches of navy to add some contrast,” Rich explains. Key to the design are custom draperies descending 20 feet with a jabot at the top to “effectively fill the volume and eliminate a cav-

For homeowners who like to entertain in their new place, the kitchen is a crowd pleaser, with comfy chevron-pattern seating at both the quartzite-topped island and the table in a lightgray stain. Like eye candy, Asian pottery peeks through glass doors in the upper cabinetry— white in contrast to the gray cabinet base—and honeycomb marble stretches across the backsplash. Off the kitchen, the homeowner dared to be more contemporary with a bell-shaped pendant in the sunroom, the “perfect place to

relax and read,” Rich says. When the day is done, the master bedroom evokes elegance with a glass candelabra in the middle of the tray ceiling over the kingsized bed with a tufted headboard—a nod to traditional style. Nailheads add a novel touch to the bed and the tilt-back chairs in the sitting room. “This is a huge bedroom, so we warmed up the bed area with a custom area rug,” Rich explains. Completing the look, the pale

blue colors get a “little punch,” she says, from the semi-gloss white trim. In the powder room, Rich found a way to make the walls three-dimensional with a textured floral design, which she teamed up with a vintage mirror and pedestal sink. The staircase dazzles with a group of batik patterns in shades of blue and a custom chandelier by American Brass & Crystal. The entrance foyer is a microcosm of what’s to come, from the millwork and crown molding

for classic charm to wow features such as a custom rug of off-white and charcoal with pops of navy. (The rug, says Rich, is how “you get introduced to the sophistication of the house.”) Contemporary triptych artwork uses crystals for three-dimensional texture, further setting the tone for a home that mixes styles in a timeless manner. Says the designer: “Even in a time of COVID and supply-chain problems, this was always a joy.”

TOO MANY COOKS? A West Milford family’s overpopulated kitchen threatened culinary chaos— till a redesign made the room more efficient and capacious. TEXT by MARISA SANDORA CARR DESIGN by SHARON SHERMAN

cooks was the priority. “Being home during COVID, we were tripping over each other,” remembers Adam. “We wanted lots of space to cook, and we wanted everything to have a place, so that all the small appliances could be tucked away and it would look clean and modern.” The West Milford couple searched for “the best kitchen designer in northern New Jersey” and found Sharon Sherman of Thyme & Place Design in Wyckoff to make their dream kitchen a reality. “The client trusted me completely, even though Adam told me how difficult he was going to be, as he was looking for perfection,” says Sherman. The footprint of the kitchen remained largely unchanged, but Sherman suggested relocating the kitchen doorway closer to the living room to achieve two goals: easier access from the living area, and a tall wall to accommodate the refrigerator, pantry storage and a wine bar. The designer visually connected the adjacent living room with the kitchen by creating a passthrough above the bar. The Apps had requested some rustic touches, and Sherman found reclaimed barnwood to cover the drop ceiling and support the brackets for the suspended

Homeowner Adam’s favorite part of his new kitchen in West Milford is the Miele built-in coffee maker “because we use it every day,” he says. “It’s nice to wake up knowing there’s freshly ground coffee.” Designer Sharon Sherman worked with Randy Veenstra from Veenstra & Sons in North Haledon to make the Apps’ kitchen exactly what they hoped for. “Randy was amazing, and Sharon was so patient with me,” says Adam. “She knew I was meticulous and a little bit annoying, but we just wanted it perfect.”

shelves. “This created a statement for the bar area, adding interest so as not to feel too ‘kitchen-esque’ from the living-room side,” says Sherman. The Apps originally desired an all-white kitchen with a subway-tile backsplash but, thanks to Sherman, they agreed to paint the island and walls a grayish-blue color (Temptation by Benjamin Moore), and go with variegated gray-and-white subway tile with a little shimmer to add drama to the space. In addition to the reclaimed wood above the bar, a WoodForm concrete bar top that mimics walnut and wide-plank porcelain tile on the floors adds warmth so that the white kitchen doesn’t feel stark. As big cooks, the Apps knew they wanted a Wolf stove and a 48-inch Sub-Zero refrigerator, plus an appliance garage with outlets and lighting to house smaller appli-

ances. Sherman took it one step further and proposed a pot-filler faucet above the range, a culinary sink outfitted with accessories including a colander, knife storage and cutting boards and a steam/convection oven and second prep sink in the island. “Before, it was hard to cook for a lot of people, but now we can do it,” says Meredith. “Now we have multiple ovens and can have multiple cutting boards going and all of us cooking at the same time, which is great.” The family enjoys entertaining, especially during the holidays, so they appreciate being able to feed a crowd. But at the end of the day, “really, it’s more about us,” says Adam. “We spend a lot of time as a family in the kitchen, congregating, catching up on the day, and the old kitchen wasn’t very inviting. We’re thrilled with the way this turned out.”

4/22/22 10:57 AM

This page: “The Wolf oven has a pizza stone, and as a family we do pizza-making parties, which are really fun,” says Meredith. Tile in a classic mini herringbone pattern highlights the range. Opposite: Retractable doors on one pantry cabinet allow easy access to small appliances, which are usually stored neatly out of sight. Hand-blown pendants from CP Lighting hang over the island, which was made bigger to accommodate more cooks. The countertops are quartzite, a natural stone from Stone Surfaces in East Rutherford.

When Brooke Hills Sperling, president of Columbia Brooke Hills Design, moved into her Upper Saddle River home with her husband, Mark, and their toddler, she found herself in designer heaven; the 6,000+-square-foot colonial with six bedrooms, eight bathrooms, pool, guest house, tennis court and soccer field presented the perfect design test lab. “The home is always evolving,” she explains with a laugh. “As a decorator, I’m constantly shopping for clients and seeing new materials to bring home—a job hazard.” At first, the home had a French country feel. “The dining room was red and there was a rooster chandelier in the kitchen,” Sperling says. “My initial goal was to quiet the space.” While staying true to the home’s architecture, she stripped all the floral wallpapers, tore out the green carpeting, stained every inch of

hardwood, brought the wall colors to neutrals and custom-designed all the window treatments. Most pieces were new, bought for each room’s specifications. Sperling selected neutral textural wallpaper for most of the first floor. For the formal “grown-up” dining room, the challenge was to find wallpaper that echoed the rest of the main floor’s color scheme while also inserting a “fun” surprise. When she found the Scalamandré zebra-patterned wallpaper, she knew she’d hit her target. “The zebras add a lot of action; the space comes alive.” (But alive, of course, means ever-changing: such is Sperling’s passion for continuing evolution that the zebras, fitting though they’ve been, will soon give way to Phillip Jeffries black grass-cloth.) To further amp up the room’s impact, Sperling had the ceiling painted in Benjamin Moore Decorator White and trimmed with

Other new additions: Marimekko top plates she personally carried home from Finland and linens bought during a trip to Ireland. Opposite: The Aerin chandelier sheds beautiful light on the Scalamandré wallpaper. At first, the zebra wallpaper was a non-negotiable must-have, but now the designer/homeowner says, “The zebras had their day; it’s time for something new.” She’s now selected a “stunning” Phillip Jeffries black grass-cloth wallpaper, which she’ll soon have installed to revitalize the room’s energy.

Farrow & Ball Pitch Black. The RH round table and Molteni&C chairs add to the conversation with bold statements. “I let the architecture—and the inhabitants and how they live—dictate the design,” Sperling says. In this spirit, she transformed a sitting room into a space that now sees much more action as her husband’s music room. The space now strikes all the right chords—the Yamaha Disklavier piano is a star attraction. Sperling added the built-in wall feature to showcase her husband’s sheet music. “They’re an eclectic mix, frequently changing as he often picks up new music during our trips,” she says. Built-in nooks framing the fireplace display items rich in memories—maracas, a bongo and ceramics collected in Mexico. Hanging above the fireplace, a sketch of a jazz musician is a gift from Sperling’s father-in-law, while a poster from Bayou Maharajah, a documentary that Sperling’s husband produced, adorns a nearby wall. Sperling underscored the melody of neutral colors and design notes with JF Fabrics window treatments she designed herself, Stark camel carpet and Molteni&C black sofas accented with black and cream pillows in Kelly Wearstler fabric. Natural elements such as the wood furniture and greenery are in tune with the room’s welcoming composition. Inviting comfort is also the mood of the informal eating room. “We eat breakfast, lunch and dinner here,” she says of the charming space decorated with Restoration Hardware table and chairs, orb-shaped Hicks Pendants by Visual Comfort and comfy banquette cushions and pillows by Ryan Studio Pillows. “When my daughter has friends over, they can slide on to one side of the banquette. It works equally well for more formal gatherings.” “For all of our first floor’s ‘public spaces’ I’ve tried to create a style that’s sophisticated, open, classic yet contemporary and evolving,” says Sperling. “I think I’ve succeeded.”

MEET THE DESIGN PROFESSIONAL Is it worth the investment to reupholster/refinish furniture I already own? If you purchased well originally, then absolutely! Furniture with good bones should last for many years, sometimes for multiple generations. Regardless if a room’s color palette or décor changes, classic pieces are timeless. When it’s time for a refresh, instead of adding to the landfill, upcycling is a creative, sustainable solution. Give your treasured old pieces new life by transforming them. Reupholster your favorite sofa with a bold new fabric or refinish a desk with paint and glaze. It’s an opportunity to make your antique pieces feel fresh and youthful.

We all have visions of our perfect room. But with so many choices, a room makeover seems daunting. What are your actual first steps when working on a new project? Firstly, we are a TRUE team. We balance each other and rely on one another’s experience, knowledge and keen eye to create a home that is beautiful. One of the most important qualities of our job is listening. And we’ve mastered the art. After all, the project we are about to embark on is not about our personal style choices, but about the varied tastes and sensibilities of our trusted clients. Mid-century modern, Old World, bohemian, minimalistic or on-trend – we know it all, appreciate all styles and are experts at creating a home that reflects your passion and infuses your distinctive style. We also consider the overall style of the house, so while the room has its own personality, it blends and maintains the integrity of the rest of the home to ensure a seamless look. After the listening process, we ask a lot of questions. How will the room be utilized – kid and pet friendly or off limits to tots and furry friends. Will the room have dual functionality? For example, an office/sitting room or a family/playroom? These are important details that help direct our selections in terms of fabrics, trims, color choices, window treatments, lighting as well as furniture placement. Remaking your home should be a fun and exciting journey. Helping you uncover your individual style and bringing your dream room to reality, is why we put our hearts into every project and love what we do!

FINISHING TOUCH

WARNING: CURVES AHEAD Step out of the box with a curvilinear garden and yard, inspired by organic shapes found in nature.

L gardens? That’s so 2021. A big garden trend that experts are seeing

this year is curvaceous landscaping, which shifts from strict, rigid lines in one’s backyard to more organic, curvilinear shapes. While 2020 was all about flattening the curve, 2022 is about embracing it. In fact, having curvy lines and pathways has long been a feature of the design practice feng shui, the idea being that meandering shapes help positive energy flow more freely around the home. This approach has aesthetic benefits too. It gives a softer and more casual vibe to your space, makes it look bigger and, when done right, gives it more movement too. It’s also a clever way to differentiate your yard from your neighbors’. These curvy rules don’t apply just to greens, florals and shrubs, but also to hardscaping, such as patios, pathways, outdoor kitchens and decks, as well as furniture. This patio designed by Thomas Flint Landscape Design & Development in Waldwick, for instance, features three tiers of curvilinear hardscape: one for the grill, a second for dining and a third (not pictured) for lounging. “You seldom find straight lines in nature, and many homes are surrounded by wooded areas with curvilinear lines,” Flint notes. “When done right, freeform design can recreate some of the curves, which seamlessly flow from one area to the next and blend into the surroundings.” Doesn’t it make simple sense to fill your yard with organic, natural shapes like those found outdoors anyway? A landscaping expert such as Flint can help you achieve and perfect this look. There’s still time to be a bit ahead of the curve.
