No matter how old I get, summer reminds me of my childhood: long days at the beach, iced tea on the front porch, riding bikes and picking berries. Sure, adult responsibilities preclude lazying away my days, but there’s still something about summer that makes me feel more carefree. In that spirit, we’ve filled the Summer Issue of NJ Home with projects and designs that, above all else, make the homeowners happy by connecting them with days gone by. Take, for example, the Warmkessel family. For them, summers mean days at the beach, precisely the reason that they moved closer to the shore and into a new five-bedroom home in Brielle. But they wanted more than just being near the sand and water—they wanted a house that was light, bright and had a coastal vibe. (They even got rid of their old furniture to introduce new pieces that fit the mold.) In “Shipshape!” on page 52, read how designer Elizabeth Ruffalo brought the beachy look indoors. Then there’s the Hunkele clan, who we write

about in “Sun, Sand, Togetherness.” Theirs is a family story that spans three generations, each of which spent quality time at the same Lavallette beach house. The home was ravaged during Superstorm Sandy, but the Hunkeles rebounded, rebuilt and even expanded. To make their space suitable for family get-togethers now and for future generations, they called on designer Pam Cooper to bring the fun beach mood indoors without going overboard. Turn to page 66 to read about the transformation. Even though they loved the beach, overdoing the nautical theme is exactly what the McGuinesses wanted to avoid when they moved into their new Spring Lake home. Their wish list included a home that had a summer vibe during warm weather months but exuded the holiday spirit when winter arrived. In “A House for All Seasons” on page 40, see how designer Alma Russo mixed textures and colors to give the family a home that’s visually arresting 365 days of the year. The wish list that a Franklin Lakes couple gave to their landscape architect, CLC Landscape Design, included items that cater to the family’s penchant for entertainment and relaxation. The husband and wife are both physicians, so having the option to unwind in the backyard after work hours was imperative. Despite several obstacles, the firm came through for the homeowners, giving them the perfect space to kick back at home. Flip to “Just What the Doctor Ordered” on page 72 to read about the project. This issue, of course, has plenty more stories and inspiration for you to get the most out of the season. Here’s hoping that your home is filled with plenty of rest and relaxation, family and friends—exactly what summers are meant to be.

WHAT’S UP, WHAT’S NEW AND WHAT TO DO.

FURNITURE FOR THE VERY YOUNG

Never before has your kid’s room looked this chic. West Elm has launched a brand-new collection of furniture for children and babies that includes 200 pieces that’ll fit any tyke’s (or parent’s) style, from boho-chic to mid-century modern. The eco-conscious collection will sit well with parents’ consciences too, as most of the line is fair trade-certified and sustainably manufactured. The launch also features a collaboration with sister brands Pottery Barn Kids and Pottery Barn Teen, who’ve been in the kids’ furniture market for some time. There are no brickand-mortar stores (yet) where you can browse West Elm Kids, but check them out online at westelm.com/shop/kids-baby. P.S.: Expectant parents can set up a registry there too.

ITALIAN HOSPITALITY

Le Sirenuse in Positano is a beloved hotel on Italy’s Amalfi Coast and, let’s be honest, it could be a while before you get there (again?). The next best thing? That’d be these new lines of tableware created by Carla Sersale (who owns the hotel with her husband) and her sister, Constanza Paravicini, each embodying the hotel’s whimsical spirit. Laboratorio Paravicini is home to Constanza’s Aria collection, which features clear glasses, bowls, pitchers and tumblers that are all handblown in Venice. The gradual hues of cobalt, turquoise, green and pink pay homage to the colors of the Italian coast. The collection pairs beautifully with Sersale’s Bloom dinnerware (above), comprising a dozen plates featuring intricate hand-paintings of simple yet intricate and colorful flowers. Learn more at sirenuse.it.

NOT YOUR GRANDMA’S ROCKER

NJHome

Woven rattan may have been your granny’s material of choice, but that’s because she’s never met the Granadina Chair. This curvy beauty was designed by Spanish architect Pablo Carballal and is the debut item in his furniture line, Candi. It’s an outdoor chair intended for sitting, sure, but also ogling, made of steel tubes (curved using “numerical control technology”) and Trevira CS textile, named for its Comfort & Safety (CS). This gal is also lacquered in a sexy lipstick red, hence the name, which is Spanish for grenadine. And oh yeah, we’d be remiss not to mention that Carballal’s creation won an Honorable Mention at the European Product Design Awards.

MUST-READS

JUNE HOME SALES

New Jersey’s housing market maintains its upward trend, as demand for homes in the Garden State continues to exceed supply. If you’re thinking of getting into the market—either buying or selling a home—consider the following stats from a year ago before you decide:

6,833

Consider your summer inspo found. Everyone who ever had a warm-weather getaway home on the water—or wanted one—should check out designer Tricia Foley’s new book, A Summer Place (Rizzoli, $50). It’s an ode to summer living on Long Island’s idyllic seaside community of Bellport-Brookhaven, where Foley dwells. The tome’s 240 pages picture different incarnations of perfection—artist’s retreats, cozy cottages, modern mini mansions and summer gardens— each designed around breathtaking views of the water. Adding to this summer’s chorus of design ideas is Every Room Should Sing (Rizzoli, $42), a book by British interior designer Beata Heuman. She’s known for her playful designs, bespoke furniture and whimsical wallpapers; you’ll find all of that and more while thumbing through these pages. Each chapter features vibrant photos of the author’s quirky creations, along with tips for the budding designer, ranging from incorporating texture to finding your individual style. (OK, the author may not literally make your home’s interior burst into song—after all, she’s only Heuman.) Finally, if you collect coffee-table books as you collect art, By Design: The World’s Best Contemporary Interior Designers (Phaidon, $67) is an eye-catching catch. The rooms featured in the book (the Phaidon editors are credited as authors) were designed by some of our generation’s greats—including Kelly Wearstler, Vincent Van Duysen, Studio Shamshiri and Beata Heuman (yes, the one mentioned above)—and curated by an esteemed group of industry experts.

WHAT’S HOT THIS SUMMER

In designing a room, you may not wish to follow too many trends at once to avoid a cacophony of styles. But here are three trends we’ve noticed this season: • Geometric vases: Vases and decorative pieces with curves and geometric lines are a great way to update a bookshelf or display case. Of course, they double as containers and storage space. • Regency: Inspired by the Netflix hit Bridgerton, this trend incorporates furniture and design elements from London’s Regency era—think golden candelabras, velvet chaise lounges and embellished gilt mirrors. • Monochromatic rooms: This modern trend requires painting your room and accenting it in the same color palette so there’s no separation in color from the floor to the ceiling. Be sure to mix shades (light blue paint color and a darker blue sofa, for example) and add texture and unique accessories to make the space look marvelous instead of monotonous.

Actress, singer, new mom and rustic décor enthusiast Ashley Tisdale is following in the footsteps of Diane Keaton, Lenny Kravitz and other celebrities who moonlight as interior designers. The Ocean Township native and Disney Channel alum has launched Frenshe Interiors, a design company that reflects her trendy style and panache. Tisdale’s rustic-yet-contemporary, farmhouse-inspired designs balance masculine and feminine features, as seen in the 35-year-old’s first completed project, a renovated kitchen done with her contractor father. And the looks are easy to emulate: She sources regularly from Chairish, 1st Dibs and Dekor. Check out @frensheinteriors on Instagram to see her work.

ART DÉCOUPAGE

It takes more than an accomplished artist to combine the delicate medium of découpage with the exclusive collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art—it takes the best. Découpage, of course, is a craft technique of gluing colored paper cutouts and decorations to a hard surface or object. John Derian, the celebrated New York City-based découpage artist, has created 13 new découpages after sifting through and drawing inspiration from more than 2 million archival papers that had been secured in the museum’s Department of Drawing and Prints. The collection includes floral-patterned trays and cake stands, playing card-motif plates and butterfly-motif cups. The pieces can be viewed and purchased at the Met store and at store.metmuseum.org.

WHAT’S OLD IS NEW AGAIN

Vintage pieces by mid-century industrial designer Paul McCobb are hard to come by these days (especially if you don’t want to fork over thousands), but CB2 is bringing his masterpieces to the masses. The retail giant is reproducing some of the late McCobb’s timeless designs for what just may be the interior design collaboration of the century. CB2 has reimagined McCobb’s classic Pavilion outdoor collection from 1951, some of his lighting pieces as well as the chests, dressers, bookshelves and cabinets that made him a household name. The new items maintain the same simple elements and clean lines of his original designs, but with modern twists; for example, the outdoor collection features Sunbrella fabrics for extra durability. Browse the collection at cb2.com/design-collabs/paul-mccobb/.

WHEN ONE DOOR CLOSES…

…Another opens. That’s what we say about life—and Greenbaum Interiors. The pandemic forced the custom design warehouse and workroom to close up shop in Ridgewood, but an 11,300-square-foot location has taken its place in nearby Saddle Brook, also in Bergen County. Greenbaum Interiors also has a facility in Morristown. Both locations offer trade designers and the public a vast selection of custom furnishings and antiques in addition to furniture restoration, reupholstering and interior design services. Check out the new showroom at 280 N. Midland Ave. in Saddle Brook. If you still prefer to shop online, the company offers clients Zoom consultations too.

GARDEN PARTY Let us tell you ’bout the birds and the bees, and the flowers and the trees—specifically, where in the Garden State you can see them all. Though the pandemic kept most of them closed last year, New Jersey’s great public gardens are now open and in full bloom. These finely manicured and maintained grounds not only serve as inspiration for your own backyard, they’re also wonderful places for an easy, serene and socially distant stroll in nature. Below are five landscapes that showcase some of Mother Nature’s best: Deep Cut Gardens. Part of the Monmouth County Park System, these 54 acres of seasonal gardens and greenhouses feature dozens of rose varieties and more than 180 bushes. • 152 Red Hill Rd., Middletown, 732.842.4000, ext. 4312; monmouthcountyparks.com Grounds for Sculpture. Nearly 300 works of art are scattered throughout 42 beautifully landscaped acres and gardens. • 80 Sculptors Way, Hamilton, 609.586.0616; groundsforsculpture.org New Jersey Botanical Gardens at Skylands. Part of Ringwood State Park, the gardens (pictured) are listed on both the state

and national Registers of Historic Places. • 2 Morris Rd., Ringwood, 973.962.9534; njbg.org Van Vleck House. Once a private estate, the grounds of the 12-acre property are now open to the public and for events, retreats and fundraisers all year long. • 21 Van Vleck St., Montclair, 973.744.4752; vanvleck.org Rutgers Gardens. The official botanical gardens of Rutgers University boast 180 acres of designed landscape, plant collections, student farms and more. • 112 Log Cabin Rd., North Brunswick, 732.932.8451; rutgersgardens.rutgers.edu

It was the beach that drew Jeanne and Pat McGuiness and their four children to Spring Lake summer after summer. But when the couple decided to move permanently to the Shore town famous for its tree-lined streets and gracious old homes, the one thing they didn’t want was a beach house. “Since this was going to be a full-time residence,” says their designer, Alma Russo, “the homeowners told us from the start that they wanted it to look as beautiful during the winter holidays as on a summer beach day.” Thanks to Russo’s deft mix of textures and colors and a transitional design, the custom build—which Jeanne McGuiness describes as “kind of cottage-y but with a South-

ern flair”—is a four-season home that’s as visually arresting as it is inviting. There’s plenty of white to create a sun-washed coastal feel, but it’s warmed by a variety of woods and deep blues and textures that you wouldn’t expect to find in a summer home. In the dining area, for instance, Russo installed a fireplace mantel and ceiling beams, all crafted from reclaimed wood, and a painted shiplap ceiling. Instead of hardwood, which is used throughout the rest of the house, the floor in the dining area is reclaimed brick. Together, all these elements give the space a feeling of lived-in comfort and make it feel more like a historic addition than part of a newly built house. Wood is definitely the predominant note in the second-story reading nook. There’s a wood console table against the wall and a standing lamp with a driftwood base—these work as perfect counterpoints to a wicker chair with a very modern vibe. “We layered in all the textures,” Russo notes, including a hide rug, a cashmere throw and a herringbone-patterned wood floor. The railing

has spindles of black metal, a material that recurs throughout the house, particularly in the lighting and the four-poster bed in the master bedroom. Fabrics were chosen for their year-round appeal as well. A quartet of custom ottomans are upholstered in a pale blue tweed, and there are two deep-blue velvet upholstered chairs in the living room. “Velvet wouldn’t be our go-to for a summer home,” says Russo, “but it’s absolutely something we’d want for a four-season home.” Vibrant colors, especially blues, complement the white walls, kitchen cabinetry and master bathroom, as well as upholstered pieces in various shades of white, like the living-room sofa and a quartet of chairs in the dining area. The inspiration for the palette of blues came from an oversized piece of stunning Murano glass wall art the family brought back from Italy that now hangs in the living room above the blue velvet armchairs. Its complex blues recur throughout NJHome

the house: in an ombré curtain and several paintings in the dining space, a pair of pillows on the living room sofa (and a painting above it), a color-swirled surfboard in the reading nook and a leather bench in the master bedroom. For all its beauty, this is a very user-friendly house too. In the living room, for instance, four custom ottomans fitted with castors are corralled beneath a low console, ready to be pulled out for anyone who wants to kick their feet up. The console itself has a weathered finish that’s impervious to sweating glasses or spilled drinks. Just beyond it is a window seat fitted out with a cushion and ample pillows, a spot that works as both extra seating for guests and a place for leafing through a magazine or sinking into a good book. Perhaps the most comfortable locale, and Jeanne McGuiness’ favorite, is the area in the dining space just in front of the fireplace, where four rocking swivel chairs invite relaxation. “Everybody who comes here sits in these four chairs—they’re super-comfortable,” says the homeowner.

She notes that the area’s informal feel, with a hide rug and wicker table, makes it especially inviting. “In my old house, friends would always gather around the island,” she says. “Now they gravitate toward those chairs in front of the fireplace.” Which isn’t to say that the home’s kitchen is uninviting. The large island, for instance, offers comfortable seating and achieves a sense of airiness through the use of furniture styling: Two table legs give it an airiness missing from most kitchen islands. And the master bedroom is a study in light and air. The high peaked ceiling is covered in white shiplap, and windows let in ample sunshine. The simple four-poster bed, in dark metal, leads the eye upward and, like the blue bench at the foot of the bed, complements the room’s predominant whites. As in the rest of the house, the mixed materials here—metal bed, wicker head- and footboards, woven rug, cloudlike linen bedding—work together to make the room feel timeless, seasonless and—above all—stressless.

GAL.su21.Alma Russo Lake House.indd 50

This page: To make the master bedroom feel seasonless, the designer chose a dark metal four-poster bed from Bernhardt with wicker head- and footboard. The mix of materials includes a leather bench and white linen bedding, and the end result is a retreat that’s as relaxed as it is light-suffused and airy. Opposite page, left: The entryway introduces the transitional design that prevails throughout the home. Light, engineered-wood flooring and a slender white oak newel post contrast with black metal spindles on the railing and a dramatic dark metal pendant. Opposite page, right: The master bathroom was long and narrow, with a high ceiling; to add balance, the designer chose a patterned tile from Donna Martin Tiled Interiors and opted to break up both mirrors and sconces.

The homeowner requested white and light and bright, and that’s just what she got in her open-concept kitchen, dining area and family room, where Elizabeth Ruffalo (pictured) of Pheasant Lane Designs mixed white, natural elements and various shades of blue. A woven cane-backed chair in a slightly darker shade of brown “adds a little depth to the family room,” says Ruffalo.

A dining table from Pottery Barn is flanked by white oak chairs with woven seats from McGee & Co., a backless oak bench from Ethnic Craft and a slipcovered bench from Lee Industries. The mix of seating “adds to a feeling of gathering and has a little bit of a fresher look to it,” says Ruffalo. The natural abaca rope woven light fixture is oversized but feels light and airy enough not to overpower the space. “I love it and get compliments on it all the time,” says Warmkessel. One of her favorite elements, suggested by Ruffalo for the new space, is a motorized blind on the sliding glass door in the dining area. “It gives us privacy when we’re sitting down for dinner or watching TV,” she says. “But first thing in the morning I open it, and it’s nice to get the light in the house.”

NJHome

There’s nothing more inviting for an artist than a blank canvas, and that’s what Elizabeth Ruffalo of Pheasant Lane Designs in Allendale got when Barbara Warmkessel reached out to her for help decorating a newly built, five-bedroom home in Brielle. The Warmkessels were moving from Jackson in order to be closer to the beach, and they sold almost all of their old furniture so as to have “a completely different vibe in this house,” Warmkessel recalls. “I wanted everything light and bright and white—a coastal, beachy look with lots of shiplap.” One of the challenges Warmkessel knew she needed help with was how to make the open-concept kitchen, dining area and family room flow naturally and not look like three mismatched rooms. Ruffalo fought a natural inclination to put the dining table sideways and instead turned it parallel to the walls in order to accentuate the long lines of the space. Adding drapery helped delineate the dining area from the family room and added warmth and texture as well. Warmkessel wanted Ruffalo to use her artistic vision to solve another problem too: adding a built-in to a room with no obvious space for one. “They wanted the TV over the fireplace on the far wall, and there were a lot of windows to contend with,” recalls Ruffalo. “In the end, we went with a built-out instead of a built-in centered on a side wall, and I was really happy with how it worked out.” Warmkessel had requested more shiplap throughout the house, so Ruffalo added shiplap here and used natural shelves

This page: The angled ceiling in a narrow third-floor bedroom was no match for Ruffalo, who designed a built-in bed with drawers below and shelves on either side to maximize the space. A cool lounge area and desk fills the other side of the room inhabited by the family’s teenage daughter. Shiplap was used in this room as well, helping to carry the coastal feel throughout the house. Opposite page: Another favorite element of the homeowner’s new space is a built-out instead of a built-in that Ruffalo created on a side wall of the family room. “It gives that extra special touch to the room,” says Warmkessel, who enjoys displaying family photos, knick-knacks and artwork.

NJHome

to provide contrast against all of the white. Now it’s a special place to display objects of sentimental value, family photos and artwork. “I love the way it adds dimension to the room,” says Warmkessel. A Dash & Albert rug of blue wool helps separate the family room space and adds a subtle coastal vibe without being over-the-top nautical. Ruffalo swears by Pottery Barn’s performance fabric, so she had no problem suggesting white upholstery for the sofa—even for a family with two kids. Instead of a larger sectional that might have cut off the room, Ruffalo went with a chaise on one end to keep the space airy and open. One of her favorite things in the room is the concrete lamp. “I love white with natural materials contrasted against it,” she says. Warmkessel’s teenage daughter’s bedroom on the third floor posed another design challenge with its narrow shape and angled ceiling. Ruffalo suggested a built-in bed with drawers underneath and shelves on both ends to maximize the space. “My daughter loves it, and it just fits so well in the room,” Warmkessel says. Overall, the project went smoothly, save for a few COVID-related delivery delays. “It was fun having a blank canvas and adding depth, playing with the architectural elements and adding those in a functional way,” Ruffalo says. The result is a coastalchic design that any artist would be proud of.

townhouse with a difference The homeowner was trading Manhattan for Morristown, but she wasn’t giving up her love for distinctive urban chic. Text by Donna Rolando

Moving can be stressful, and Janine found it hard to imagine leaving her Manhattan apartment of 36 years. The move made sense because she was driving to Morristown often for her mom’s medical care. But Janine had to admit she was nervous. Luckily, she knew where to turn: to Karla Trincanello, a certified interior designer with Florham Park’s Interior Decisions. Some 16 years prior, Trincanello’s sophisticated yet romantic design had helped Janine fall in love with her Manhattan home overlooking the East River. “What we did in Manhattan was very glamorous and eclectic,” says Janine. “That’s what I loved about Karla’s taste. I wanted to bring that same feeling here.” In 2019, she brought Trincanello back on board to design her new-

Every other Morristown townhouse may have living and dining rooms joined together, but here designer Karla Trincanello created the feel of two intimate spaces. The architectural columns do the trick, with drapery portieres for a touch of romance. The soft blue walls match the original dining chairs from the homeowner’s Manhattan apartment.

construction townhouse at the top of a hill in Morristown’s Columbia Park, and now she has made a successful transition to suburbia. This once-anxious homeowner often says she’s in love with her place, which is also ideal for Mom because it has its own elevator. Townhouses have cookie-cutter tendencies, both inside and out. But Trincanello promised Janine that hers would be unique. “I said, ‘Don’t worry. No one’s going to have anything like you.’” The other goal was to make a new home for all the furniture that had become central to Janine’s city lifestyle. That mission was accomplished with all but the living-room sofa, which was replaced with a newer Century sectional in light blue velvet. To break out of the usual suburban townhouse mold, Trincanello reconfigured the space with classic arches in the entry foyer’s long hallway. Overall, it creates the impression of entering an intimate New York City townhouse with an entry and a vestibule, she says. “It also gives the visitor pause to notice the sparkling grass-cloth wall covering accented with metallic silver paint for the trim and ceiling.” Here, guests catch their first glimpse of the eclectic transitional style that makes the space, along with soft blue tones and animal prints. A donut-shaped crystal light fixture

is a contemporary companion to the classic arches. Yet with the careful mixing of these divergent styles, nothing seems awry. Just off the foyer, the kitchen is an opportunity to see Janine’s love of animal prints in action. The swivel island chairs in tiger print, teamed up with two Lucite and black leather stools, provide seating for six; great for a homeowner who loves to entertain. Trincanello departed from the typical townhouse white kitchen with her choice of deep espresso cabinets, which she contrasts with a backsplash of white glass and gold from Mediterranean Tile of Fairfield over a white quartz perimeter countertop. The island’s granite top stands out for its beautiful veining. Gold is an accent found throughout the house, and in the kitchen its influence is evident in the gold-leaf wall covering, stove hood and Sputnik sculptural lighting. Janine is amazed at how the modern Sputnik lights tie in so well with the chandelier of clear and topaz crystals in the dining room—two different styles. Dinner parties are a passion for Janine, and the dining room here, she says, is like the Palace of Versailles. For this room, Trincanello borrowed from the NYC apartment a glasstopped, concrete-based table encircled with Parsons chairs with bullion fringing and two French oval armchairs for the hosts. A leopard area carpet covers the walnut-stained wood floor predominant on the first floor. Though a short distance away, the living room has its own character, thanks to tall columns with drapery portieres that add the romantic elegance of the owner’s old Manhattan apartment. It’s a touch even more dramatic here with the 12-foot ceilings. A gold-framed portrait of a woman flanked by candle sconces pumps up the romance

Even the staircase to the second floor is a conversation maker, with its Scalamandré jumping zebras on the walls, paired up with zebra carpeting from Stark on the stairs. “It’s funny but it’s classic,” says the designer of this pattern. Scalamandré is also the highlight of the powder room off the entry foyer, where charcoal gray grass cloth with crystal beading catches the light and the eye. The gold-tone sunburst pattern mirror is the contemporary contrast to two sconces Janine hunted down in an antique store and to the crystal bowl lighting above. A white pedestal sink was replaced by a mirrored front vanity with a Carrara marble top. Metallic paint for the molding and ceiling completes the look in gold and silver. The master bedroom also borrows from New York, but in a unique way. The canopy bed repurposes the NY portieres draperies, and the silk satin bedspread has a soft rose that blends with the floral carpet left over from city life. In keeping with the eclectic mix, the antique headboard in blue fabric is in harmony with the blue silk grass-cloth walls. A mirrored French door blocks the view of the master bath, and strategically placed draperies draw the eye to nature, not the rows of townhouses. “It’s all in the detail,” says Janine. “Karla’s extremely detail-oriented, and that’s what makes everything look so rich and unusual.” The homeowner gave Trincanello free rein for her artistic expression and was not disappointed. “I allowed Karla to really go wild,” she says. “I trusted her; I knew she would be able to pull it all together. Sometimes I would say, ‘Really, Karla, are you sure?’ And she would say, ‘Trust me.’”

This page: The powder room is dramatic, with Scalamandré’s beaded stripe grass-cloth wall covering and gold accented mirror. The floral wall sconces were the homeowner’s find. Left: For a sense of intimacy and romance in the soft blue master bedroom, Trincanello reined in the 12-foot ceiling with a molding border. The bed canopy and drapery panels draw to some extent from the New York apartment; the designer also repurposed the apartment’s floral carpet and chandelier.

This expanded Lavallette beach house sees plenty of action from three generations of family—and their friends—so Pam Cooper designed the great room with lots of seating vignettes. One solution is the custom bench that seats six along a 12-foot window. For the young at heart, there’s always a table ready for puzzles and games.

Cooper’s design of the great room, completed in 2019, was such a hit that “we wanted the dining room to be equally beautiful,” says family member Heather Hunkele. A thread common to both designs is the custom built-ins (right) by Ingrained Cabinetry of Freehold, an attractive storage solution this clan appreciates. Want a cool drink to grab and go? The refrigerated built-in offers that too.

Superstorm Sandy in 2012 didn’t care about tradition when it devastated a Lavallette beach house that had been in the Hunkele family for years. But this family not only bounced back from the loss of one of the street’s original bungalows, they expanded their homesite into an adjacent lot and hired a designer for a décor meant to entertain. “We love to be outside, but we wanted the space we have inside to be accommodating to everyone,” says Heather Hunkele. She’s a member—along with her husband, Steven, and two school-aged children—of one of three families that share the house. Perhaps that’s why they so love the gallery wall Pam Cooper of the Watchung-based eponymous design firm created in the great room. It’s a testament to beach smiles and their enduring value that each family member can embrace, starting with the original owners, Steven’s parents. The feel-good décor is another burst of sunshine for a dreary day, with its solid navy sofas topped with coastal transitional pillows. “It’s not overly nautical; the punch is on the pillows,” she says. Adding touches like a bowl of seashells on the coastal influence coffee table (Stanley Furniture), Cooper further resisted beachy overkill. Meanwhile, the great room’s sandy color palette in Benjamin Moore Frappe welcomes pops of color. The blues, greens and turquoise bespeak Cooper’s vision “to connect the outside colors of the water and beach to the inside.” Beyond style, the great room had to go the extra mile with seating vignettes where 20 people could comfortably mingle within view of the entertainment unit. Cooper mastered this tall order with several creative options, including bench seating under a 12-foot window and a high-top console with kid-friendly stools. The bookcases on either

Even gloomy days are filled with sunshine thanks to Cooper’s gallery wall of beach memories. And Hunkele’s mother-in-law, Jan, was glad to see her favorite rattan chairs reupholstered in Braxton Culler coastal patterns. Right: Ocean hues in geometric shapes provide the perfect pop against a sun-bleached white wood frame in this American coastal style. The turquoise cabinet from Liberty Furniture reflects the family’s affection for blues.

side of the window seat are great for storing puzzles and games. The neutral wool sisal rug over the hardwood floors doubles as a soft spot for little ones to watch TV. “If sand comes in it’s very forgiving,” says Cooper, pointing to yet another goal—easy maintenance, which she accomplished with performance fabrics. The dining room was born to feed a crowd with its 10-foot farmhouse table illuminated with rope chandeliers from Wayfair hanging from the shiplap custom ceiling. To complete the look, Cooper introduced Roman shades in a geometric pattern that complements the striping on the chairs. Echoing a trend started in the great room, the dining room relies heavily on built-ins. There’s a place for everything, from serving plates to chilled wine, courtesy of this custom work by Freehold’s Ingrained Cabinetry, which includes a quartz-topped dry bar with natural wood on the wall. Years after Sandy did its dirty work, this refuge for families from Chester and Mendham—in the family for some 20 years—has indeed come back stronger than ever. “We had to get up off the ground, and that was the only way—to rebuild,” says Jan Hunkele, Heather’s mother-in-law. She credits Cooper with helping to create just what the family wanted: an open, airy space in blues and aquas reflective of the beach. Says Cooper of what she’s wrought: “This is now a warm, relaxing home where they can leave the weekly stress behind.”

just what the doctor ordered The physician client’s plans for a small Franklin Lakes backyard required surgical precision. Text by Darius Amos

Design by CLC Landscaping

Photography by Brennan Gray

Rich Cording Sr., who co-owns his family’s CLC Landscape Design in Ringwood, was preparing a backyard project for a Franklin Lakes property when he learned that the homeowner was one of the area’s top physicians. “After we met and he saw me struggle to walk up his driveway,” says Cording, “he told me I might need knee surgery.” The doctor was ultimately correct, but Cording focused first on the landscape work—and there was plenty to do. The homeowner and his wife, also a physician, gave Cording an ambitious wish list. Somehow the team, which

CLC Landscape Design of Ringwood installed a bluestone patio to connect separate zones of this Franklin Lakes backyard. A mix of bright annuals and permanent plants softens the look around the hardscape features, but also—more importantly—helps shield the property from the busy roadway on the other side of the trees.

This page and opposite: The team at CLC Landscape Design squeezed everything the homeowners wanted into the relatively small corner lot. Once the plans were completed, the design included an outdoor kitchen and eating area, a living room and fireplace and a water feature with spa. Though not on the owners’ original wish list, they added a separate firepit with Adirondack chairs and mulch groundwork.

74

included his son Rich Jr. and landscape designer Frank Thropp, in the business for 45 years, would have to fit a swimming pool, a hot tub, an outdoor kitchen, a fireplace and more into the space. It was a hefty task given the property’s small size and location on a corner lot along a busy roadway. “The challenge of getting all the elements onto the property,” Cording says, “seemed impossible.” But CLC had the luxury of working with a relatively blank slate in the backyard. The only significant features from the previous design were an old brick patio, oak trees along the perimeter and a patch of lush, green lawn. That made it easier to create “destination points” in the yard. To freshen the look, the firm installed a light and durable bluestone patio, but also “added a little old to the new” by incorporating some of the old red brick into the design, Cording says. The patio connects different zones of the yard, from the grill and dining area to the living space. Perfect for all-weather lounging, rattan sofas from Eastern Outdoor Furnishings in Totowa surround the outdoor living room’s custom fireplace, constructed from fieldstone that was specially split and rounded for the project. Overhead, a pergola built by S Scott Construction and Design in Franklin Lakes provides ample shade on sunny days.

Opposite page, top: The same firm constructed a similar pergola along the side of the house, allowing rose plants to grow around and above the grill area. Opposite page, bottom: Instead of a full-size swimming pool, a swim spa by Endless Pools was added so the homeowners could enjoy ample exercise and relaxation sessions in the backyard.

76

Behind the fireplace, CLC used a variety of plantings in different heights to shield the property from the busy street. “The planting was intense,” Cording says, adding that hydrangeas and even more lush foliage were added behind the adjacent hot tub area. “The neighbor’s driveway was right behind the spa space, so we built a wall there and put in more plants.” While fitting a hot tub into the plans didn’t pose much of a problem, the desired swimming pool did. “I knew we couldn’t do a real swimming pool because the yard was too small,” Cording notes. “So, we went with a swim spa. He’s 6’5, so this feature allows him to swim and get exercise and then go into the hot tub.” “That’s what good design is about—meeting the client’s needs and making it look beautiful all year long,” he says of the project, which took roughly three months to complete in 2019. “Everyone wants a fireplace, pool, somewhere to relax in their yard. This is one of our proudest projects, as we checked off everything on the wish list while working with limited space.” As for the knee surgery that Cording eventually needed, the homeowner helped him check that off his list too.

To entice family members to the seldom-used finished basement, interior designer Judy Sturdevant encouraged the lady of the house to lighten things up with brighter color choices, comfy custom pieces, whimsical art and vintage finds. “Everything Judy did in the space has brought light and joy and color in,” says the homeowner. “Now we love spending time there.”

When Robyn and Alex Kelly and their five kids, then ages 5, 9, 12, 14 and 20, moved into their custom-built, 8,200-squarefoot, New England shingle-style dream home in Westfield in 2012, they thought they had all the bells and whistles. With seven bedrooms, seven-and-a-half bathrooms, a three-car garage and 2.5 acres of landscaped property featuring a resort-like saltwater pool and multiple outdoor entertainment spaces, the home had been thoughtfully and lovingly designed for highend living at its most spacious and inviting. But it turns out the 1,800-square-foot basement wasn’t up to the style standards of the rest of the home. It was already three years into their move and the deep downstairs—featuring a kitchenette, a bar area, a play/craft room, a recreation room, a home gym and a guest suite with full bath—still failed to draw much family traffic. “It was finished, but it was super dark and no one ever wanted to go there,” Robyn says of the space, which was painted in dark grays and decorated in a mismatched style with red cabinets and “all the leftover furniture” that hadn’t made the cut in the upstairs living areas. Deciding it was time to call in creative reinforcements, Robyn asked interior designer Judy Sturdevant of Westfield-based Freeman Hall Design to help her turn her “dark and gloomy” basement into a “fun and bright space” where all the family members—especially the kids—would want to spend time. The two had met and clicked when both were involved in a show house charity event. By then Robyn’s home had already been decorated, but when the downstairs begged for an uplift, she immediately thought of Sturdevant. “I love Judy!” says Robyn. “She really listened to what I wanted and steered me in the right direction to be a little braver and do things I might not have done on my own.” The rest of the elegant home was mostly decorated in subdued colors and patterns. But for this downstairs space, Sturdevant envisioned a breezier, more relaxed, fun feel with play-hardy performance furniture and fabrics and eye-catching pops of color.

This page: The designer scored vintage details such as the cherry-decorated glasses on the kitchenette peninsula and the blue seltzer bottles on the bar cart from Great House in Summit. The wall art over the eating table was a favorite find from CSM Art & Frame in Chatham. Opposite page, top: To offset the sleek, modern feel of the lacquer cabinetry and tulip table, the designer warmed things up with organic elements like the Serena and Lily rattan counter stools and bar cart. Opposite page, bottom: Recalling the recent pandemic-induced, nesting-at-home past, the homeowner notes: “During this past year, this cozy area with the tulip table and bench seating was a great place to do jigsaw puzzles.” The built-in three-sided banquette and oval table maximize seating, while the two Four Hands teak dining chairs with rush seats offer comfortable textural interest and the Serena and Lily pendant radiates a cheery glow. Fun elements such as the colorful blown-up photograph of Wonder Bread loaves add a slice of wholesome whimsy.

82

“Robyn regretted selecting the red kitchen in the basement and wanted to know if I could choose a new paint color for the cabinetry,” Sturdevant explains. “But I loved the red and thought it was the perfect launching point to inspire the other downstairs spaces. The area felt very disjointed in terms of the kitchen and eating area relative to the TV room and playroom.” To unify the rooms while also brightening the vibe, Sturdevant had all the gray drywalls replaced by shiplap painted with Benjamin Moore Super White, a brilliant, almost sparkling shade that evokes a sunny, carefree state of mind. “We were going for a fun and casual look, and I think that our use of materials really accomplished this,” the designer says. “I knew when I first saw the cabinetry’s red lacquer that we would be pairing this with turquoise and navy pieces for a laid-back, beachy quality.” In the TV room, Thibaut window panels in Honshu Navy with coral, blue and beige were paired with a woven Roman shade for a view with visual pizzazz. Echoing the shade’s texture, the two Noir open wood and rattan peel chairs are covered in a perky turquoise Duralee fabric that perfectly punches up the sand-toned, custom-sized Thibaut sectional. The Schumacher lumbar pillow covers in a geometric linen/cotton blend called Mezza Luna further enhance the color story, while the Prestige area rug serves to frame the space. The Flor carpet tiles in shades of sea colors complement the children’s room while also connecting the two spaces. In the eating area, the banquette seats, covered in a vivid red Schumacher Fuzz II performance fabric, coordinate with the nearby red lacquer cabinetry, while subtle details such as the cherry-decorated glasses atop the peninsula serve up extra scoops of playful red accents. “Have I mentioned how much I love Judy?” says Robyn. “She was very patient, kind and professional, and had lots of great sources to create many custom pieces and elements. When I found a piece I liked—for example, the tulip table—she went with it and worked it into the plan. She had a wonderful vision, but really allowed me to have a say in what I liked and what I chose for the space as well.” Collaborating closely with the homeowner, Sturdevant sourced all of the fabrics and seating, as well as the sofa table, side

This page: The designer used Flor carpet tiles in shades of sea colors to connect the children’s playroom to the main TV and eating areas. The playroom is adjacent to the stairs and separated from the other rooms by a sliding barn door. When the room is messy, the owners just slide close the door; when they want to make the space live larger, they slide the door open to reveal a complementary setting that unifies and enlarges the total space. table and rug. She had a carpenter build the kitchen bench seating and the long, lacquered cabinet under the TV, and guided the homeowner in choosing the custom-sized sectional with performance fabric from Greenhouse Fabrics with an eye equally to style, function and practicality. “It’s a perfect fit for the space; so pretty yet practical,” says Robyn. “What good is a greatlooking sofa if the kids can’t jump on it and spill popcorn all over it?” “She and I had so much fun selecting fabrics, collaborating on the shiplap/trim and designing the additional cabinetry,” says Sturdevant of the process, which—allowing for occasional breaks when the homeowner requested other projects elsewhere—took almost a year to complete. “Every decision was a team effort, and the finished product is really bright and cheerful. Ultimately the Kellys desired a cushy and comfortable downstairs space where they could watch their family movies, sporting events and have game nights together.” Mission accomplished. The homeowners couldn’t be more pleased with the results. “It is just a happy, bright place!” says Robyn. “I love the light and airy feel. It doesn’t even feel like a basement. Our kids entertain their friends down there, and it’s where the whole family watches movies and sports. It’s the one place that we can all fit onto one couch!” The designer clearly worked her magic and transformed the space from a place where no one wanted to gather into one of the most popular parts of the entire home, according to the homeowner, who wistfully notes that the family will soon be moving to a new home in North Carolina and thus won’t have much longer to enjoy their current downstairs space. However, on the bright side: she’s already enlisted Sturdevant to make their new spaces just as beautiful, happy and inviting. “Judy’s friendship and her continued positivity and willingness to help me make our home better for our family has been the biggest reward,” says Robyn. “If she was able to turn our dark and gloomy basement into a beautiful and appealing space, I know she’ll help me accomplish the same for our new home.”

How can I make different styles work together in my home? AsktheRealtor_v2_CF.indd 86

I love helping clients blend styles to make a room look cohesive. Here are my two 3/2/21 tried and true ways to successfully solve this dilemma.

10:54 AM

Carefully choose elements from different styles that are crafted with the same wood finish or fabrics in similar color tones. That creates the underlying thread which elegantly interlaces styles. Or blend different styles to create a new aesthetic. For example, what if you like contemporary but your partner prefers classic farmhouse style? By blending contemporary Shaker-style cabinetry with rustic tile and black metal hardware and lighting fixtures, you’ve created a contemporary industrial farmhouse aesthetic that everyone loves. If you’re facing the challenge of blending styles, it helps to have an experienced designer with a trained eye to create a home you can both love!

Special Advertising Section Is it worth the investment to reupholster/refinish furniture I already own? If you purchased well originally, then absolutely! Furniture with good bones should last for many years, sometimes for multiple generations. Regardless if a room’s color palette or decor changes, classic pieces are timeless. When it’s time for a refresh, instead of adding to the landfill, upcycling is a creative, sustainable solution. Give your treasured old pieces new life by transforming them. Reupholster your favorite sofa with a bold new fabric or refinish a desk with paint and glaze. It’s an opportunity to make your antique pieces feel fresh and youthful. Quality furniture that you love will stand the test of time. What are some innovative and new trends in exterior siding? When it comes to traditional homes I prefer to keep with timeless natural materials, such as stone, cedar bevel siding, and cedar shingles. Nothing will ever replicate the natural beauty of these materials! If you are considering siding for a modern home, there are many more opportunities with innovative materials. One of our favorite materials is board form concrete. The poured-in-place concrete takes the form of wood and creates something truly unique since it maintains the look and texture of the wood grain. We really enjoy contrasting materials like mixing board form concrete with cedar or even ipe soffit accents against dark siding. If you’re contemplating a new look for your home’s exterior, it helps to have the eye of a seasoned design-build firm to orchestrate the project.

Treehouses, it turns out, are too cool to leave to youngsters alone. Is nothing sacred? The last refuge of kids escaping grown-up rules—and enforcing secret rules of their own—has become a thing for designers and builders serving the over-18 set. That is, of course, the treehouse. Many homeowners driven to innovation by a stay-at-home year have extended the living space on their property both outward and upward. The resulting arboreal domesticity is cozy, breezy and not half so crazy as you might think. And you needn’t be Tarzan or Jane—or even know the whispered password. The overhauls given to treehouses today are transforming them from the primitive plywood platform structures of years past to durable cabins suitable for modern living. They’ve even become a global trend in the hospitality industry, with many resorts outfitting exclusive treehouses with king-size beds, couches, bars and plumbing. Thanks to companies like Tree Top Builders in nearby Exton, Pennsylvania, you too can have a fantastic tree dwelling among the mighty oaks in your yard. And don’t worry if the branches aren’t strong enough or if you would rather not drill holes: A groundsupported structure that’s built around the tree provides the same effect and still gives you that one-with-nature feeling. Tree Top’s team of arborists and builders has constructed these houses all over the East Coast, including sites in Mendham, Princeton, Ridgewood and Tewksbury. Why not turn over a new leaf and try such a structure in your backyard this summer?

BEST OUTDOOR Lynx began as the vision of a group of people with almost a century of collective experience, who for 35 years

were manufacturing top-of-the-line stainless steel products for the commercial food service industry. Lynx has taken that

same quality, workmanship, service and innovation and incorporated it into the Lynx Professional and Lynx Sedona collections. The combination of the best materials, fine craftsmanship and original ideas is why Lynx Products are in a class of their own.
