CRUISE in and get your

The 7th annual event is here! It certainly was touch and go for a while as the world went through one of the strangest times on record. Still, the masses wanted the show to go on so here we are. The numbers (at time of writing) are a touch lower than normal but let’s see how we progress as we all get back to the new normal. Our best friend Amy has once again come to the party and organised Miss Cruise Martinborough for 2021. As we did last time, it’s a casual affair with no cat walk. Just be sure to look good and register yourself at the Cruise Martinborough Trailer. A similar schedule will see us venture to Lake Ferry, Masterton Motorplex in Masterton and of course close off traffic on show day around the Martinborough Square. Covid saw the drive-in movie business sell and vacate down south, so this year we will have a new event in Greytown - drinks on the deck at the historic White Swan. I hope you have extra rubber for Friday at MMP, and of course show day in Martinborough includes the Wairarapa Country Music Festival (free entry for all CM entrants). That’s it for now. Let’s have another good event!

It’s fantastic to see Cruise Martinborough back for the seventh year! Cruise Martinborough is situated in one of the most vehicle friendly districts in New Zealand, with scenic and rolling roads with a very low population density. Over the past seven years, this event has become more and more popular with residents and visitors alike, and to see the millions of dollars of people’s pride and joy on display is an impressive sight.

Welcome from Masterton Mayor Lyn Patterson It’s an understatement to say that a lot has happened in the world since we last welcomed Cruise Martinborough to Wairarapa. I have to say it will be fantastic to see some old friends and familiar faces – and their cars – back to our district after a tumultuous 2020, as well as newcomers. It is, I hope, a sign that things are returning somewhat to normal. And while the impact of COVID-19 meant some work by Masterton District Council could not be done, I know that our roads have remained a focus. And they’re

Martinborough, and enjoy our wonderful shops, cafés, restaurants, vineyards, countryside and beaches.

To see them driving through South Wairarapa in convoy is fantastic - they are a credit to you all. Last year, I noted the collaboration with other locations such as Tauherenikau Racecourse, and hope this is something worth continuing.

We appreciate your visiting us, and will work with the organisers to make sure each year is better than the last.

Please visit our three towns of Greytown, Featherston and

there to be used. But just a headsup, you may notice some speed limit changes on familiar roads after our speed limit review to boost safety, so keep an eye out! Cruise Martinborough is a great opportunity to get out and see the treasures of this part of the country, and late last year we had some fantastic news that Masterton District now has two parks with international Green Flag awards. Henley Lake has become only the third park in the country to be

- Alex Beijen, Mayor of South Wairarapa

awarded a Green Flag community award, and Queen Elizabeth Park has now won its third consecutive Green Flag. For those wanting to stretch their legs, we have further extended our fabulous network of recreational trails, while the revamped space around the Lake of Remembrance now looks magnificent. And don’t forget to check out Aratoi – Wairarapa’s museum of art and history – or park up at Hood Aerodrome to check out what our aerial enthusiasts are up to. After a difficult 2020, I can guarantee a warm welcome and some great hospitality from our local businesses and residents. - Lyn Patterson, Masterton District Council Mayor

Cruising to the Wairarapa Country Music Festival Following on from last year, Cruise Martinborough will again be on site at the Wairarapa Country Music Festival on Saturday afternoon from 2pm to 5.30pm This year’s Festival at Tauherenikau will be one of the biggest yet, with an epic line-up of Kiwi talent including legendary New Zealand songstress Jodi Vaughan, fantastic fiddler Marian Burns, and 2018 Country Entertainer of the Year Ainslie Allen.

Listening between the lines Expect some classic tunes from the 1960s to today when Between The Lines plays the Pukemanu Bar & Eatery on Saturday night from 8pm. Between the Lines is a three-piece acoustic band combining the talents of three well-seasoned Wellington musicians. Lead singer Josie Hick is originally from Taranaki, and

moved to Wellington to study music at Victoria University. Guitarist Mayer Te Tau has played in bands such as Shadez, Studio22 and Nudge over the past 10 years. Bassist Bryan Perkins has played bass for the past 25 years, playing in a Jimi Hendrix and U2 covers band, and had great success with the dynamic duo Loose Jandal.

The 2021 festival will also welcome Eddie Low, winner of the Country Music Legend award in 2009. The Saturday afternoons of the Festival are known for their laid-back vibe as everyone soaks up the music, sun and atmosphere.

Pony car gets a ride at Cruise Ross & Shona Heathcote Cruise Martinborough 2021 will be one of the first opportunities Ross and Shona Heathcote have had to enjoy their 1968 Plymouth Barracuda which they bought nine months ago. “I went to look at a 1970 Chev Nova 350 and Shona noticed the Barracuda in the workshop and asked if that car was for sale,” recalls Ross. “The owner had had the car for 20 years and was reluctant to sell it. He made contact the next day and said we could purchase it.” The engine is a 340 stroked to 416 with many enhancements including an oil accumulator.

Three generations at Cruise Martinborough Rod Penn Rod Penn has been involved with cars for the majority of his life, from president of Nelson speedway to pit crew for a Holden Group A car. “I am mainly a GM person, so have had a ranges of Holdens. My dad had Chevs and Holdens over the years. “I have longed to own a classic for years and hence the lean to what dad had, with a 1956 Chevy Bel Air 4 door hardtop. “Since then my wife Diane has

gotten the bug and has all the clothing to go with these cruises and hops. She has also fitted out the grandies in the right gear as well.” Sometimes called a Bel Air Sports Sedan, the car is still all-original which is how Rod plans to keep it. It has a 265ci, 170hp,V8 engine with a 2 speed powerglide auto gearbox. “One of its best features for us is the colour which we get a lot of comments on. “We have done over 15,000 kilometres in it going to various

found with the classic car scene is that regardless of what make or model vehicle you have, they are someone’s pride and joy and everyone mixes in with each other.”

The day Debby picked up Big Jon Debby Conner Debby Conner’s love affair with her 1975 Dodge Pickup is over two decades long. “I’ve owned this beauty for 24 years now. I was on a farm up north and needed a farm vehicle. He was perfect. “I was down in Petone going for a warrant of fitness and saw him for sale. I just loved him the first time I saw him. “In the last 10 years I finally took him off the farm and spent money on him. His name is BigJon which is his number plate.” According to Wikipedia “The D/W series was a line of pickup trucks that was sold by Dodge from 1960 to 1993. “The same basic design was retained until the October 1993 introduction of a completely redesigned Ram. “A redesign of the D series for the 1972 model year introduced a more rounded look. This redesign, which lasted until 1980 with minor changes, included new features

Police envy Nathan Jones The first day after Nathan Jones got his 1999 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor wrapped and decals done, he went for a drive. “I ended up going through a police checkpoint and the officer said to me “do you wanna swap cop cars?” I said “Hell no!” The Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, colloquially referred to simply as the CVPI, P71, P7B, is a four-door body-on-frame sedan

that was manufactured by Ford from 1992 to 2011, according to Wikipedia. “It is the law enforcement version of the Ford Crown Victoria. From 1997 to 2011, the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor was the most widely used automobile in law enforcement operations in the United States, Canada and Saudi Arabia. They were also used for this purpose on a more limited scale in

other countries.” There are not many of the model in New Zealand and Nathan asked a mate to find him one, with success 18 months ago. “I named my Crown Victoria Bernie after my late mother-in-law who passed away in 2018.” Nathan’s car comes with lights, siren, hard plastic seats and a mean push bar.”

Goodbye Harley Davidson, Hello 1962 Chevrolet Impala Russell Guy Russell and Alicia Guy have visited Cruise Martinborough for a few years now on their Harley Davidson but decided last year that 2020 would be the year they drove in in their own car. “I have owned and operated a mechanical workshop for almost 17 years now so to say anything automotive is in my blood is an understatement,” says Russell.

“From fuel leaks to hydro leaks, everything needed work and it definitely sorted out the boredom of lockdown.”

“Alicia and I have two young girls - Payge and Paytin and as they get older and bigger the want for a family vehicle grew bigger so I set off to clean the Harley up for sale and the search began. I couldn’t bring myself to sell my Harley, so I kept it! “The 1962 Chevrolet Impala popped up on Trade Me and I called the seller instantly and bought it over the phone - sight unseen. “The vehicle was delivered a few days later. A week after that we headed into lockdown so I did what every man does - sunk myself into the garage, working on the car and the beer fridge in an effort to clean, fix,

improve and personalise the car. “From fuel leaks to hydro leaks, everything needed work and it definitely sorted out the boredom of lockdown.” Since then, the Impala has been involved in weddings, school balls and even the Petone Christmas Parade.

In 1987, the Fleetwood Brougham name was shortened to simply Brougham, with production continuing through 1992 with only minor updates.

“It is a perfect mix of being ultra-reliable and extremely temperamental, with a huge supersized American personality,” says Daniel.

When he was a teenager, Daniel Hickson had a poster of a 1990 Cadillac Brougham on his bedroom wall and made it his goal to own one some day.

Daniel specifically picked the “d’Elegance” model which has full electrics and all the mod cons and

A long labour of love Brad & Rach Gooding The path Brad and Rach took to get their 1959 NinetyEight Oldsmobile Holiday Scenicoupe on the road was as long as the American classic car itself. In total, Oldsmobile built approximately 81,000 98s in 1959. Of those, roughly 13,700 were two-door

Scenicoupes, making them relatively plentiful, says Craig Fitzgerald in August 2007 issue of Hemmings Classic Car (www.hemmings.com). “But the 1959 Olds was almost a one-year-only body style. What that means for collectors, and especially restorers, is that exterior body panels and chrome trim for these cars are a lot harder to find than the more popular Chevrolet models,” says the article. In 2006 Brad and Rach answered an advert for a car in Christchurch, but it was already sold. “The seller had a friend who also had an Oldsmobile for sale. We didn’t miss out on that one,” recalls Brad. “I fell in love with the shape and rarity of it, completely ignoring the work required to restore it,” says Brad of the coupe which was finally registered in 2017. “After just getting the car mobile and painted, I played with the stereo and drove into a five wire farm fence. Luckily we were going slow and I stopped before hitting a post. No damage thank goodness.” The Oldsmobile’s prime features include a 394 cubic inch engine, 4 speed automatic, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power aerial “and it’s loooonnnng”. The Scenicoupe got its name for the panoramic sweep of glass. As a brochure said in 1959, “There’s nothing but tinted, heat-resistant glass between you and the sky.”

A tale of falling in love Kevan Dudson It might be an obvious statement, but what makes the 1972 Buick Riviera Boattail Coupe so distinctive is its rear end. “When the model was first released, it was quite controversial given its length and width. People either fell in love with it or hated it, there was no in between!” says Kevan Dudson. “My Dad liked it because of the boattail shape to the back end of the car. For myself, I like big American coupes with big block V8s and this one fitted the bill for me on that basis. Also, there are not a lot of Buicks like this around so it was something different to have.

“The other thing with the car is that we liked the fact that we know the full history on it from when it was originally brought into New Zealand by an American Airforce pilot posted here.”

“I’ve had heaps of fun in my old Buick and been to lots of things in it. The best times are when family or friends are traveling with you and enjoying all the ups and downs that go with owning an old car!”

Kevan and wife Kala have had the car since 1997.

Chev Pickup makes up for lost time Adrian & Glenda Nicholls Adrian and Glenda Nicholls had to go many years without a classic car after their HJ Holden was stolen in the early 1990s. “We were raising a family and never really had the extra money to buy a toy up until we bought this,” Adrian recalls. The “this” he is referring to is a 1940 Chevrolet Pickup which they purchased four years ago. “We had been looking for a vehicle for some time, and were originally looking for a Ford Bonus or Jail bar. “But then this popped up on TradeMe from a plumber in Albany in Auckland. He had only had it for three months and had purchased it from a retired farmer in Ashburton near Christchurch who used it to deliver firewood. “ The couple liked the fact that the pickup looked different. “We had wanted to own a classic vehicle/hot rod for some time. You don’t see many of these around as the Fords,

and it is painted in good Taranaki colours. “It’s by far not a show vehicle,” concedes Adrian, “just a good cruiser. I’m slowly giving it a tidy up just to keep it looking good. “I have recently removed the deck, stripped it down and sanded it, and redone it with a marine varnish, as it was previously painted brown and

showing its age. “The next thing might have to be the interior as its just been covered with carpet since it was rebuilt in 1998. “My focus is to keep it mobile as much as possible so that we can enjoy it and be able to attend these types of events as well as do it up.”
