GOLD AWARDS Vibrant Golden Shears wins gold award The Golden Shears earned another accolade when it won the Vibrant Gold Award at the 2020 Wellington Gold Awards. Founded in 1999, the Wellington Gold Awards in association with The Dominion Post celebrates the excellence and enterprise of businesses in the Wellington region. There are eight industry categories with the Vibrant Gold Award focusing on events, hospitality and tourism facilities. The Gold Awards are held annually in TSB Arena, and are attended by 900
or so guests, including Members of Parliament, the region’s mayors and many business leaders. On the Gold Awards website Golden Shears President Sam Saunders is quoted as saying “Over 450 people competed in 2020 over three and a half days in shearing, wool handling and pressing. The 2020 livestream reached a record 129,000 viewers.” “Masterton War Memorial Stadium, the venue, holds approximately 1200 spectators and was near capacity for both finals nights. This event brings in a large number of visitors each year to Masterton which is very advantageous for our local economy.” Looking back today, Sam says the Golden Shears had considered entering the Awards in the past “but it always came at a time when the Golden Shears was on and we were

pretty busy with other things. Last year the entry deadline was left open a bit longer because of Covid, so we had more time to put in an entry.” The timing of the award is fitting, says Sam, as 2020 saw the Golden Shears celebrate its 60th anniversary. “Receiving the Award is recognition of what our committee has done over the past 60 years in entertainment and industry.” Finance Minister Grant Roberston presented the Award, which saw eight Golden Shears committee members and their partners at the event. Sam says he knew the Golden Shears was in with a chance of winning, “but I never count my chickens before they hatch.” He says the success of the event comes down to the passion of its volunteers,
