Introduction

Deciding to follow your dream and create a business, or to change direction in life, takes an enormous amount of courage at the best of times. To do so in the time of covid brings up another set of challenges but that hasn’t deterred many of the women profiled in this magazine. They have been working quite successfully in a chosen field and for a variety of reasons have taken a U-turn and dived headlong into doing something they have always dreamed of doing. Their stories are awe inspiring.

Often, I would go along to meet one of these women thinking I was going to hear all about, say dog grooming, but then learned about working in the British Air Force caring for members of the royal family and UN officials. Or the Russian-born writer and editor who creates cakes which are delicious works of art. There is the woman who faced her addiction issues and now runs a coaching service helping others, and a PE teacher who has taken up upholstery transforming people’s precious furniture.

There’s similar themes in this year’s Women in Business too. I came across mother and daughter operations and there’s also nurses who have created businesses from a hobby and others finding their niche in semiretirement. Some organisations featured celebrate their female staff and take a bow to the creatives in their community – think Ka Pai Carterton and the Wairarapa Women’s Centre. Some businesses have evolved from women’s love of beautiful

things, and they have created entrancing places to visit. – Maison Eketahuna, The Whole Nine Yards in Masterton, and Adelaide Eliza’s in Greytown to name a few. Interestingly, some of the business profiles involve an all-woman team for example Wairarapa Vet Services and Take Note Carterton. Women in many occupations feature here – we celebrate you all.

Gawith Burridge Lawyers

Back in Action

FROM LEFT: SOLICITORS NICKI THOMAS AND MARTA WOJCIKOWSKI, PRACTICE MANAGER, SUE RICKEY AND PARTNER, MICHELLE WILLIAMS (AND LUCY).

Village lawyers reign supreme in Martinborough The all-female team of lawyers at Gawith Burridge Martinborough are thoroughly enjoying working within the timber panelled walls of the 1924 building on Jellicoe Street. The old-school approach is adopted in the service they offer to their community. “We all adore the community we live in, and want to return to being village lawyers, working at the grassroots level. You know, when you go for morning coffee, casually meet someone and you help them out,” says Michelle. We want to be known as the accessible, down to earth local law firm, where you feel comfortable. Michelle has experience in many areas of law. She enjoys property law and gets a thrill of helping first home buyers. She enjoys working with clients to achieve what is best for their succession planning, including Wills, Enduring Powers of Attorney, Trusts and more so than ever, advising on the increasing blended family scenarios and relationships, good times and bad. Clients love her honest and uncomplicated approach. “A lawyer I can understand!” Her other passion is the arts. She is Chair of the Aratoi Patrons Trust, and loves getting out on her new ebike.

Nicki joined Gawith’s in 2019. She lives in rural Martinborough. Nicki works in the difficult area of deceased estates and elder law. She has an amazing ability to provide sound legal advice during difficult times, with a sensitive and empathetic approach. The team love it when Nicki’s children visit and bring hot chips. Marta is a newly qualified lawyer. Prior to Gawith’s, she worked in London for 12 years. Marta also lives rurally in Martinborough. She enjoys property law – transactional with an end in sight, makes her tick. Marta likes a spot of tennis in summer, netball in winter, and the occasional run. Her children leave the team love notes on the old manual typewriter. Sue has spent much of her career in London in investment banking. As Gawith’s Practice Manager, she oversees both the Masterton and Martinborough offices, ideal as she lives in Martinborough. She has a keen interest in fitness and likes a challenge whether it be at the gym or out in the hills with her dog. The wellbeing of the whanau at Gawith’s is fundamental to Sue and is a key part of her role. Keep it local. Get in touch. We are here Monday to Thursday, working 9 to 5, what a way to make a living.

FELICITY BROOKS.

Brooks team knows the importance of refrigeration to business Brooks Refrigeration is one of those businesses which began with a couple yearning to fill a gap in the market and to be your own boss. It can be a gamble and can come with sleepless nights but for the Brooks family, it’s been a winner. Felicity Brooks has been supporting husband, Adam, for almost five years, doing all the administration for the busy refrigeration service. She has a ‘day job’ but as the business picks up, she is finding the refrigeration work increasingly interesting and busy and may have to make a choice between the two. There are also four daughters at home. They are always looking to improve the service – like providing a mobile chiller trailer, which Adam built for customers who need an instant back-up chilling facility. Adam had worked in the industry for over 20 years and having his own business has been the ultimate ambition. Along with Felicity, he is joined by Shane Hunt, who is doing his refrigeration engineer’s apprenticeship after years in the wine industry. Naturally mechanically minded,

Shane appreciates the importance of refrigeration in all aspects of business. Despite the difficulties of covid, there’s an increasing demand for their services. Heat pumps and air-conditioning units, heat transfer kits, and automotive air-con are a big part of their work, all needing regular maintenance and cleaning. When it comes to installing air con units, Felicity and Adam like to be aware of clients’ budget and home layout and work alongside them to ensure the correct size is installed for upmost efficiency. On the farm too, the mobile trailer comes into play, when refrigeration facilities break down or need servicing. Cafes and restaurants’ fridge and freezer units need regular attention. There’s also automotive airconditioning systems to maintain. Cars, trucks, tractors, and all farm equipment often need re-gassing and leak testing. The list goes on. Anything needing cooling, or given an even temperature control, is where Brooks Refrigeration can help.

WBS Moving with the times The appointment of Jennie Mitchell as the first female CEO in WBS’s 149-year history is just one of many recent changes for the local financial institution. WBS’s new office at 125 Queen Street

Jennie took over the reins in March, and has continued to implement changes throughout the business, ensuring WBS is well placed to deliver even more reliable, secure and flexible financial solutions well into the future. Jennie is a natural fit for the role, with great credentials in both financial management and in community involvement. She is a Chartered Accountant and has held senior management roles in various Wairarapa organisations and businesses, including the South Wairarapa District Council and the Wairarapa District Health Board. Most recently, she gained a thorough understanding of the business as WBS’s Finance Manager. Pahiatua born, Jennie studied in Palmerston North and these days lives at Riversdale Beach. In acknowledging the milestone, WBS Board Chair Colin Oldfield says Jennie was the standout candidate with impressive experience and understanding of the Wairarapa community. This notable appointment comes on the back of a period of transformation for WBS, with new branding, a new website, and upgraded IT systems ushered in over the past year. The most notable other change is the move to brand-new premises in the heart of the Masterton CBD. WBS has a suite of offices on the corner of Queen Street and Church Street, just one block from their former office. The 14-strong team are keen to settle in and continue providing the personalised service that sets them apart from regular banking services. “Our customers are more than just a number to us; we take the time to meet in person and understand their needs, often helping customers throughout their financial journey. It’s old-school banking with all the modern traits,” laughs Jennie.

“I’m thoroughly

enjoying leading a talented team that is genuinely committed to customer service,” says Jennie. The WBS Board

Jennie Mitchell

“I’m thoroughly enjoying leading a talented team that is genuinely committed to customer service,” says Jennie. “Customers are increasingly seeing the value of smaller, local providers for loans and investments, as they have greater flexibility and autonomy. Our challenge is to maintain our personal and tailored approach as we continue to grow.”

100% Wairarapa owned WBS is the only 100% locally owned lending and investment service in the Wairarapa that rewards its members and puts money directly back into the community. “WBS’s profits don’t end up overseas as they do with many of the banks; they stay right here in the Wairarapa to help others in the community.” Jennie explains that WBS’ profits are used to help grow customer’s’ savings and investments by offering great rates. They are used to help local families onto the property ladder; and they are used to invest in and give back to the local community. “In essence, we are in partnership with the community.”

WBS is governed by an independent Board of Directors, with all the directors living right here in the Wairarapa and having longstanding connections to the region. WBS has attracted highly skilled businesspeople and professionals to its board, expertly steering the building society in the right direction while maintaining their focus on helping local people and businesses succeed. The current board members are Colin Oldfield (Chair), Kristy McDonald (Deputy Chair), Tony Beech, Adam Parker, Nick Rogers, and Blair Stevens.

Community Projects Exciting things are happening throughout the Wairarapa, and WBS has been involved in the background of many progressive projects, funding innovative developers and supporting community initiatives. An upcoming funding round to celebrate the move to the new office will see local groups and organisations share in a pool of grants and sponsorship money. Details can be found on their website – wbs.net.nz.

RACHEL CLARKE.

Life celebrations can take many forms “In the end, we all become stories.” (Margaret Atwood, author). This phrase resonates with Rachel Clarke, a Wairarapa-based funeral celebrant. Rachel sees her role as walking alongside, guiding and supporting families as they say farewell to a loved one; whether that be a funeral service, memorial service, unveiling or life celebration. A former nurse educator, she has a natural affinity with people, putting them at ease; enjoying talking with families and learning about a person’s life. “The opportunity to learn about the deceased is a privilege. It helps me gather a sense of them as a person; their character, values, interests, endeavours, and achievements. I appreciate the value of being able to personalise a ceremony by listening to these stories and discussing what will suit. It is very much a process of working together.” While a funeral service is often held at a funeral home, the farewelling of a loved one can also be held in the deceased’s home, a favourite outdoor space, a venue they had a close association with or a club where they shared many a

Rachel says, “again, it is a matter of finding the right fit and the Funeral Director will work with the family to make the arrangements.” An experienced celebrant, she is happy to collaborate with all Funeral Directors across Wairarapa. You can get in touch with Rachel through your local Funeral Director. Rachel is also offering a new service; ‘Conversations with Love.’ Rachel describes this conversational space as an opportunity for people to talk about birth, death and everything in-between; for example, planning a special occasion ceremony; sharing memories as a legacy for family or having a conversation about what lies ahead. Wahine toa of Pūkaha: continuing the legacy of Manukura Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre history features many strong and independent women of both the feathered and human kind. Rangitāne Kuia championed our conservation efforts and held firm as Pūkaha Mana Whenua in the early days of the wildlife service, Manukura the white kiwi, raised international awareness of the plight of her species and Kahurangi the North Island kōkako lives a life of luxury while capturing the imaginations and awe of all who meet her. In 2022, wahine toa (strong women) continue to invest their hearts and their expertise in Pūkaha, taonga of the Wairarapa and Tararua regions. Pūkaha has a total of 35 staff including visitor hosts, café, rangers, maintenance, administration, marketing, predator control and education positions. Volunteers also make a significant contribution across all areas too – hundreds of hours of volunteer time are invested each month. Leading Pūkaha with passion are Emily Court (General Manager), Christine

The gifting of the 942ha reserve by Rangitāne to the people of Aotearoa in 2021 has upped the ante and the time is right to invest heavily in the future of the reserve, to ensure that this Tuku (gift) is never taken for granted, and that the potential opportunties that this place holds for environmental, cultural and social benefit are realised.

TA E NOTE OF THE TEAM.

The general store that keeps on giving Take Note in Carterton is celebrating its 20th birthday in 2022. Under the careful guiding eye of im Juno, it has grown from a small news agent-style bookshop in central Carterton to the go-to place in town. It’s the shopping hub where everything is available - from bouquets of owers, to providing the postal service, home and office stationer, bookstore, art supplies, toy and gift store, and a mouth-watering card selection. ou can even take your clothes there for the Taylor’s Dry-cleaning service. im is intensely proud of what Take Note has become, just as much as she is of the tight-knit, efficient, loyal, and happy team who greet their customers. One of the team has been with im for 16 years. im has strategically allocated responsibility of areas within the store to each sta member. As a result, they are specialists in the chosen sections. NZ Post joined Take Note three years ago and Tania Goodall is the manager. Julie McGregor oversees toys, crafts,

and the art department Raewyn Sherry is responsible for books Jayne Dickson and Anna Loader are the orists and Michelle Sayer is responsible for stationery and gifts. Students Ruby Hammond and Jess Goodall also help out in the weekends. Adopting the aper lus franchise has helped im develop the business. It gives her buying power to be competitive with the larger brand stores. The Carterton shop has been awarded ‘Take Note Store of the ear’ four times and was runner up once. As well as postal services which moved to Take Note in 201 , ‘ ick a Lily’ orist also operates from the store. Entering past all the gorgeous blooms is a pleasant way to begin shopping. im loves the business and is always looking for ways to improve. ersonal service is what she and her sta strive for, and it gives them the point of di erence. ersonalised gift wrapping and specialist knowledge of the various departments is also recognised and much appreciated by customers.

Pampering sanctuary in the heart of Masterton Taking time out to pamper yourself has always been important - even more so in these past few pandemic years.

Justine is proud of the bespoke Japanese products - the Adashiko collection which she uses.

When Justine Griffin started out nearly five years ago, she wanted her day spa to be a place where people would come for a treatment, rest, and stay a while. A kind of refuge from the storm.

“The Adashiko Collagen products are divine,” she enthuses. “They are amazing for anti-aging, aiming to work from the inside out.” Adashiko collagen powders aid gut health, body strength and general wellbeing. Justine also hears stories from clients that it helps with skin eczema, strengthens nails, and makes hair healthier.

When she secured the picturesque cottage, sitting under the shelter of a mighty oak tree in the grounds of an Essex Street house, it was just the venue she was looking for. Clients come up the path onto the veranda and hear water trickling from the stream, where often ducks are paddling. It’s a slice of heaven, and then you meet Justine. She has a gentleness about her, which makes you want to whisper. Her beauty treatments are truly pure bliss. “I wanted to add the aura of a ‘day spa,’ reminiscent of the resplendent spas in other parts of the world, where people would ‘take the waters’ and seek rest and relaxation, alongside some special pampering.” Not surprising, Justine has many loyal and repeat clients who will sometimes bring a friend to chill with and share treatments together. “It can just be a fun girlie day out.”

Justine studied beauty therapy at UCOL in Masterton in 2012 and 2013. Once qualified and working for other clinics, she hankered for her own business. She’s had wonderful support from her family which makes her feel confident about the future. Her greatest supporters have been her late Nana, Majorie, partner, Lane and her mother, Diane. “Running a business is far from easy, but it’s the best decision I have ever made. At the end of each day, I realise it’s what helps make me happy. Thank you to all clients for your ongoing support.”

E-bike adventures on wild roads above coastal Wairarapa Lucinda Maunsell and her out-there adventuresome biking retreat, ‘Rahui Coastal Loop’, is riding a wave of success as increasing numbers of people looking for something different to do, head for the hills and get views of the ocean to boot. She’s finding many visitors are people who have never been to Wairarapa before. The winner of the NZI Rural Women’s Business Award in the ‘Love of the Land’ category Lucinda has just upgraded her fleet of eight e-bikes. She offers a one- or three-day bike ride. The route is a 65km loop over tarsealed and gravel roads, coastal cruising, and some hills. One night is spent at Rahui and the other at the coast. Lucinda’s father, Bill helps with the business where needed, often supporting them on the last slog up to his hut on day three. “The views are worth it,” people gasp at the top. Accommodation at Rahui is ‘The Sow’s Ear’, a converted derelict farm building saved from demolition. It’s still rustic, but the stylish fresh white interior, and cosy fire with no television, internet or cell reception has people loving the wilderness feel. Rahui Gardens is nestled on the winding Tinui Valley Road and was created by Bill and Jill Maunsell, who for a decade opened to the public.

These days it’s home to daughter Lucinda, partner Quentin and sevenyear-old daughter Lilah. Apart from bike riding, guests can simply rest in the cottage, feed the ducks on the large pond, wander the beautiful gardens, and greet Sheldon, the friendly kunekune pig, who comes grazing along the fence line. There’s also Snoopy and cats, Nuts and Schnitzel. The Maunsell family have a rich history in the area with Tinui Station purchased by Archdeacon Robert Maunsell in 1859. Rahui is the back block of the original 20,000-acre Tinui Station. The majestic rock outcrop at Tinui, named Mt Maunsell, boasts the site of the first cross which was erected to commemorate the fallen soldiers of World War I. Lucinda was raised at Rahui and buoyed by a lust for adventure she set off overseas. When she returned to New Zealand, she looked at Rahui with fresh eyes and could see the potential. She could sprinkle her adventuresome spirit here. The Coastal Loop was born. Many appreciate her inventiveness: “My first time in Wairarapa. I loved our stay in your cosy cottage, beautiful gardens, and great food. Thank you for your hospitality and warm welcome. We enjoyed the riding too.” Jill, Christchurch.

SAMANTHA Mc UADE.

ERICA CARRUTHERS (LEFT) AND MOLLY POPE.

Bespoke creative hair salon New Zealand clothing in the heart of Masterton features in Greytown store Welcome to my beautiful salon. A creative, professional, calm, and relaxing salon right in the heart of ueen Street, Masterton. Hello, Sam here – owner and director of M Hair. My vision has come to light. After the 2020 covid lockdown, being self-employed and contracting from another salon, I decided to take the biggest plunge of my life, and purchased an existing salon, which has been a long-standing landmark as a successful hairdressing salon, right back to when my mother did her final hairdressing exams - this was the great Fantasia

been my amazing husband and two daughters, and the tremendous support of my close family. I have loved every minute of my journey thus far and could not have done it without them all. I also feel extremely grateful to have such a supportive clientele and I value their friendship. My philosophy at M hair is simple. A creative space in which clients can enjoy beautiful bespoke looks. Attention to detail is my strength and specialty. I love all aspects of colour and shaping to complete a look. We have created a beautiful co-working space for other driven stylists to reap the rewards of contracting.

It is incredible to think 2 years ago I stood in this very salon to finish my own hair dressing finals, never thinking I would one day be running my own salon at the same location. A dream has come true.

We stock the beautiful professional eune home haircare. We offer a personalised appointment for each individual client and an in-depth consultation, which is key to a successful service.

So here I am, nine months on from taking the reins over from the lovely Cheryl, previously ‘How’s ya hair ’ and along for the ride with me have

Come and enjoy our space – we’d love to share it with you. – Samantha Mcquade, Marlene Cameron, Michelle Jackson Dee.

Molly Pope and Erica Carruthers have created a niche clothing store in Greytown offering affordable quality brands for men and women. These two self-described ‘corporate escapees’ – Molly from teaching and Erica from law - have discovered the clothing trade, and all its wonderful accessories, is just up their alley. Stitch opened on Greytown’s Main Street next to the White Swan Hotel in June 2017, with an online store following just a few months later. As busy mothers, they knew both ways of shopping were a real attraction. Molly and Erica chose to offer several smaller New Zealand brands, often less readily available and not mass produced. There are also leading brands from across the ditch, with each piece they stock being carefully considered. They not only enjoy, but are ever grateful for their lovely repeat customers who show their appreciation of the personal service and ever changing offerings at Stitch. The two women met when introduced by Erica’s husband, Jason. Erica was originally from Auckland and had moved to Wairarapa with Jason who had grown up in Masterton. They now have two children ages six and three.

Meantime, Molly, who was born and bred in Wairarapa moved to Auckland before returning home with her husband Mat, also from Wairarapa. They also have two children, aged three and a new-born. Erica was working for a legal firm in Masterton and Molly was relief teaching at Lakeview School. Juggling parenthood, they got to talking about owning their own business. Both women love fashion and have an eye for detail. The idea of a clothing store gelled and five years on they have definitely not regretted their decision. They are supported by a small team of part-time staff who all take turns to be in sole-charge position. “We love seeing the collaboration of hours, which offers flexibility to both us and our amazing staff, and that we can offer employment,” says Erica. In addition to the retail side of things, a lot of Erica and Molly’s time is spent choosing what they think are the right garments for Stitch – along with jewellery, wallets, handbags and other accessories. Labels they stock and know you’ll love are brands like Status Anxiety, Home-Lee, Elm, Betty Basics and Ashley & Co. For the men, there’s Academy Brand and Just Another Fisherman.

It is a time when we have many people valuing Te eo Māori, beyond appreciating it from a distance. It is a passion for these oral traditions that led Taahia into teaching, and language study in the first place I love the idea that learning is ‘ for life’ and the best gift we can give someone is knowledge, but the key to the retention of that knowledge is how it’s transferred. Transfer through effective communication is such a powerful skill for someone to have, and that is what good teachers model. I always wanted to be a good teacher, like many before me.” The name eo ua’ speaks about the balance and peace that comes with knowing two or more languages, and the intrinsic comfort in being able to see the world in multiple perspectives. Taahia was mindful of the balance shifting when she became a new mum and wanted to make sure that work could fit around motherhood, but also be a way to serve her community, so her business was the perfect fit. Sarah and Hannah are thrilled and proud to be attracting customers into the northern Wairarapa town. They both love to add the finishing touches to a home, from chandeliers to backdoor mats. They are firm believers in lamps and mirrors making a home, along with a decent smattering of candles and photo frames. But there is still more, no customer should ever leave empty handed if they are after a gift.

Maison is a leading seller of CC Interiors, French Country, Stella & Gemma, and fine linen Bianca Lorenne. Sarah and Hannah say they sell what they love.

And that gift will be wrapped up complete with ribbon. It’s all part of their customer service philosophy. And as Sarah and Hannah say, one of the best parts of the job are the customers!

The store comprises several rooms so each twist and turn leads you on to new discoveries. One room has a bed beautifully layered with quilts, and enough cushions and pillows to send a partner wild (or crazy).

Specsavers Audiology

A A AUDIOLOGIST, LIA ZAMORA.

Audiology for the Community Good hearing promotes healthy brain ageing. In fact, studies show that the use of hearing aids slows down agerelated memory loss by 75%. Good hearing is important to people of all ages, nonetheless. Unaddressed hearing loss impairs language development in babies, causes reading and learning delays in school children, reduces work performance in adults, results to cognitive, balance, and memory issues in older adults. Lia holds a bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology and a master’s degree in Clinical Audiology. She wanted to become a doctor, but destiny brought her to Audiology. It has been 17 years since she started practising Audiology and she continues to love every aspect of it. Listening to people’s inspiring life experiences is a perk Lia gets as an Audiologist. She says there is so much wisdom to learn from the people she meets every day in her work. She enjoys getting to know her clients and

gets thrilled whenever her clients share stories of how wearing hearing aids have made it easier for them to hear conversations with family, friends and colleagues clearly. When Lia, a Masterton resident, learned that Specsavers Audiology was coming to New Zealand, she grabbed the opportunity to partner with Specsavers and opened Specsavers Audiology in Masterton. Specsavers has long been known for offering high-quality expertise and unbeatable value. Through Specsavers Audiology, she says she has been able provide accessible hearing care and affordable hearing aid technology to the Wairarapa community. She shares that Specsavers offers a free hearing check with their eye check for people aged 40 and over. You can also book a free 15-minute hearing check online via Specsavers website. “Hearing loss is more common than you think. The best way to spot it is by having your hearing checked.”

Retiring? Downsizing?

Get the experts in to guide you through the task Judy Thorpe, Renata Balfour and the wider TaskMasters team, are organised women and they have taken this skill to the next level helping others who may find some jobs just too daunting. “It’s a stressful process downsizing from a family home to more compact retirement village living,” says Judy. “For our clients, it’s daunting knowing where to start sorting through years of family memories and possessions, deciding what to keep, and what to donate to charities, let alone give to family members. It’s not for the faint-hearted.” Judy began helping people downsize in 2014 in Wellington. Alongside the people moving, and often their families, Judy works out a plan to decide what needs to be done. Her clients are in control of the process each step of the way depending on what they’d like to do. Word got around and Judy was in hot demand. People love her caring, relaxed and fun nature. She has skilfully guided hundreds of families making the hard decisions. In 2015, Dr Ian Miller found himself living alone in Greytown after his wife died. Making the decision to move into Greytown Orchards Lifestyle Retirement village was easy and was encouraged by his sons. “Trying to downsize wasn’t. Calling on the TaskMasters service was logical” says Dr Miller.

One of the wonderful Wairarapa team is Renata Balfour, who is also a relief teacher and grew up in the Wairarapa. Renata was recommended to TaskMasters from two different friends when she was left with her Aunt’s large home in Wellington to sort through and prepare for sale. Just two months previously her father, who lived on a farm in the Wairarapa, had died and she knew the work ahead of her. Judy’s TaskMasters team managed the job in Wellington while Renata was doing the same in the Wairarapa at her father’s property. Renata enjoyed her experience so is now working with Judy to build the TaskMasters Wairarapa team. “TaskMasters was incredible. The women were totally unflappable They even styled the house for selling using furniture that was in the house. It was just incredible.” Judy still co-ordinates the work in Wellington with her business partner, Jane van der Wilt while Renata has taken responsibility for Wairarapa. Overall the TaskMasters team is fourteen people strong, with others mainly Wellington based who work in the Wairarapa with Renata and Judy when needed.

“Taskmasters handled everything superbly,” says Dr Miller, right down to handing him a fruit cake, homemade by Judy when he was settled in.

“It’s all about respect for the client, acknowledging their privacy, and building trust with them and their families that we have their best interests at the heart of every job we do.” The team they are building take that all on board and are highly respected.

Judy has a home in Gladstone, east of Carterton, and is building a Wairarapa-based TaskMasters team.

So if you need some help organising and decluttering for your downsizing move Judy at TaskMasters is the person to call.

YVONNE SMITH.

Working life dedicated to improving the life of the elderly When it comes to managing aged care facilities, Yvonne Smith leads the way. She has spent the early months of 2022 at Roseneath Lifecare in Carterton handing over the reins to newly appointed manager Elizabeth Mather. Yvonne’s extensive experience in aged care means she is appointed on shortterm contracts to ensure seamless operation of facilities. As a result, she has overseen most rest homes and retirement villages around Wairarapa and before that in Hutt Valley. It’s a caring industry which she adores working in, describing it as privilege to have spent her working life with great people. She refers to both the residents and her colleagues. “These people are salt-of-the-earth and quality individuals which are certainly not in the job for the money.” Yvonne accepts there has been improvements in wages over recent years, but the health care sector still has a way to go when acknowledging the valuable and important work. It is a constant struggle to keep full staff numbers and this is reflected throughout the country.

“I absolutely love it here in Wairarapa and never regretted the move.” Roseneath Lifecare offers three levels of care: dementia, hospital level and a rest home – altogether 43 residents. There are also retirement villas beside the main complex. Roseneath is owned by Heritage Lifecare, one of New Zealand’s largest providers of residential aged care facilities. Yvonne moved to New Zealand from the UK with husband, Paul and she trained as a nurse. Her innate interest in aged care had her working at the Hutt Hospital where she became the liaison nurse for Dementia and Delirium. When she was widowed, Yvonne eventually moved to Wairarapa, settling on land outside Carterton. It has allowed her to use her nursing experience and management skills at several aged care facilities. “I absolutely love it here in Wairarapa and never regretted the move.”

At Roseneath Lifecare & Village, we believe in providing genuine, compassionate, safe and respectful care so that all of our residents can enjoy “a Better Everyday!” Two villas now available

Delivering nationwide.

Women ‘Bringing Home the Bacon’ (literally!)

When people hear about the Premier Beehive business in Carterton producing bacon, ham and smallgoods for the New Zealand market, they might picture big burly men. But contrary to perceptions that image is not quite accurate. Women make up the majority of workers - nearly 57% of the workforce. These fantastic women take on a mix of responsibilities including finance, production, merchandising, quality control, supply chain, warehousing, sales, and lots of other specialist roles. And women are well represented at all levels too – from executive and senior management level through to female school students working their first holiday or weekend job. Vicki McLachlan is the Human Resources Manager at Premier Beehive. Her role is a reasonably new one, created in June 2021. Her remit is working with everyone in the business on “all things people related” with a particular focus on culture, communication and leadership development. She is passionate about helping people achieve their full potential. She believes that the key to being an employer of choice in the Wairarapa market is ensuring Premier Beehive provides a workplace that is welcoming, respectful and that offers opportunities for people to grow and develop. “Everyone has their own motivation for being here. It might be to put food on the table for their family, to build their experience as a stepping stone to their next career move, or to work with a good group of people. Whatever the reason, if we want to get the best out of our people, we need to ensure we treat them well.” “Women have always played a critical role in our success. We’ve got some great success stories and we want to create even more. Our Premier Beehive women drive forklifts, lead production teams, pack products, and more.” With the right can-do attitude and commitment to hard work, Premier Beehive can provide people with a long-term rewarding career. There are many examples of staff who have been promoted internally. In fact, some of the most senior team members started out in entry level factory hand roles and worked their way up. All jobs are advertised internally, with staff actively encouraged to express their interest in vacant positions. Many people who join Premier Beehive choose to stay long term too. Over 130 staff members have been working with the business for over five years and of those, 55 staff have celebrated a ten-year anniversary and another 20 people have clocked up an impressive 20 plus years! Premier Beehive has some great benefits, many of which help attract women to the workforce. There are flexible working arrangements supporting team members with family or caring responsibilities, multiple shift times, and roles to suit school and day care hours. Some women work full-time and others work a few days a week. Advancement opportunities and remuneration is of course equal between men and women. Add to this free onsite doctor and physio, weekly meat packs (bringing home the bacon!), an employee assistance program, and full on-the-job training – and you’ve got a great place to work at one of the largest employers in the region! Death and dying - offering a healthy and nurturing service Talking about death and dying can be challenging and uncomfortable for many, but it’s one of the sure things in life. Trixie Duckett from Duckett Funerals, serving South Wairarapa, is keen to talk about you and/or your family member’s passing, before it happens, so that the funeral can be meaningful and stress free. “When a loved one dies, it’s obviously a time of grief, and sometimes shock, and the last thing you need, and want to be doing, is making those tough decisions,” says Trixie. “Decisions like choosing a casket, where to hold the funeral, what clothes to dress the deceased in, selecting appropriate music. All that stuff. By coming along and discussing things with me beforehand, we can work together to make sure everything is covered, and the funeral runs smoothly.” A down-to-earth, professional, and compassionate Funeral Director, Trixie enjoys providing a friendly and personal service to grieving families. She’s creative and innovative when helping families to think outside the square. Trixie has been a Funeral Director for 20 years and achieved her personal goal a year ago by establishing her own

business, Duckett Funerals, based in Featherston. She covers a wide area, working across South Wairarapa from Carterton south to the coast. Duckett Funerals is in Acorn House, alongside Cherry Park on Featherston’s main street. It’s a 24-hour service. Trixie farms with husband Greg in South Featherston, and once their children had grown, she concentrated more on funeral directing. She equally enjoys getting on the four-wheel-drive and working on the farm. Trixie wants families to have the style of funeral that fits with the deceased’s personality and wishes. “We’ve all been unique individuals in our lifetime, so why not reflect that in our farewell.” A deliberate choice Trixie has made for Duckett Funerals is to hold funerals in locations which relate to the deceased. “A more relaxed approach to the choice of venue allows the funeral to feel very personal and tailored.” And, looking to the future – Trixie thanks the amazing community support she has received during her first year in business. “I am honoured that local families have allowed me to care for them and their family member that has passed.”

Personalised dog grooming service where your pet is a VIP

Chance the parts specialist, backed by a life steeped in racing

Grooming your dog is way more than just wanting the animal to look good (which it does, of course).

RIA WITH FREYA, THE HUSKY – ONE OF HER MANY REGULAR CLIENTS.

initially in Porirua and then to Wairarapa, her interest in dog grooming grew and she investigated the training necessary.

Getting your dog groomed every six weeks helps reduce skin irritations, reduces allergies, helps your dog’s socialisation skills and general behaviour, and makes them feel relaxed. “If they know they are cared for, they will reward you with being a faithful, well-behaved companion.” Ria Yu Tian trained as a professional dog groomer in 2017. She grew up around animals in her homeland of the Philippines - dogs, cats, rabbits – she loved them all. When she moved to New Zealand,

W hen E v ol v ed P erformance was l ook ing for a new admin and p arts sp ecial ist – C hance coul dn’ t resist l iv ing the dream!

At her home in Moreton Road, Carterton, Ria has established a dog grooming salon for her canine clients. It’s light and airy with clean black and white tones which welcomes the dog and owner. Ria only deals with one dog at a time, so there is no anguish for the animal with other dogs around. Once groomed, they are rewarded with a playful romp in the fenced and private backyard. What’s not to like about this personalised service? Your pet will thank you for it.

PRINCIPAL, KIRI GILL. A DIE WILKINSON.

Contemporary jewellery with an earthy bent Perched at her work bench with a view of the Wairarapa plains sprawling to the Tararua Ranges is surely inspiration enough for this ewellery artist, but Audie Wilkinson also gets joy and ideas from everyday materials which catch her eye and feel. Think leather, wood, feathers, gold, and pearl. Giving new life to an old icon is a particular trait of this original designer. Her Ódi range of contemporary jewellery has been growing since she was 20 when she established her signature range of leather earrings in her home city of Dunedin. “I love to create and have been making things from around age six with a friend, when we used to sell ewellery and teddy bears at the university open days. People would flock to buy, and I knew then it was my path.” An upmarket Dunedin fashion store loved her leather earrings and buoyed from this sales success, she has grown into an established brand, stocking design stores throughout New Zealand and selling worldwide online. Audie strives to create all styles from high street to classic. Her jewellery

includes necklaces, pendants, earrings, rings, and hair accessories. Each item is finely cra ed and assembled, made contemporary by a range of subtle vintage-feel colours and variation of tactile materials. It’s a mixture of intricate artwork and handcra skill. or example, earrings cra ed into rounds, are hand painted white leather set in resin aqua or pink floral detail, drawing the eye to the fine artwork. Leaf-shaped leather earrings are of a filigree design with antique gold and bronze. Creativity and art were encouraged in her family. Her father taught at a Steiner school in Dunedin, and it was a natural pastime to create. Audie moved with her husband, Neil Anderson and three children to Wairarapa where they have established a heavy diesel repair business. Any machine used in farming, forestry, mining, and construction comes to their Waingawa workshop. Audie helps with the administration. The delicacy of ewellery-making is a beautiful uxtaposition in her life.

Valuable self-reflection reinforces school’s positive future direction “Why St Matthew’s?” Principal Kiri Gill muses. “Because we empower young women today to be their best tomorrow.” She is responding to Women in Business asking how she feels St Matthew’s is coping in the turbulent times of Covid. “As problematic as the pandemic is, it has presented us with the time to throw ourselves under the microscope and do serious self-reflection. It’s been a valuable time to look inward.” The school’s self-reflection has involved four fundamental areas: Curriculum, Boarding, Education Review Office reporting and analysing the Special Character of the school. Commenting on the school’s special character as part of the Trinity School’s system (which includes Rathkeale and Hadlow), Kiri Gill says a strong feature of St Matthew’s is the 108-year-old history. “Tradition means a lot to people. The school has maintained its integrity. Its good bones keep us stable and moving forward.” Keeping abreast of modern times, is what motivates Kiri and she’s thrilled to have won funding from the Education Ministry’s Professional Learning

Development scheme. This helps the school run adventuresome programmes like ‘The Girl of many Colours’, whereby past pupils, who have been away from school around two years, are asked to outline their transition into life has been and how their school life impacted. “We are always looking for ways to help our girls transition, and what better than to ask those who are now out there.” The school is also thankful for Masterton Trust Lands Trust funding allowing it to implement wellness initiatives encouraging the girls to be spiritually aware, asking the questions “Who are we, and why are we here?” St Matthew’s has a roll of 310, eight per cent being Māori, and six per cent Pacifica. A cultural group, ‘Ngatahi,’ combining both St Matthew’s and Rathkeale pupils has gone from strength to strength. They are proud to be called upon for haka and waiata. A further move to enforce the increasing cultural nature is through developing Whanau Ropu; a group of people from staff and community committed to the cultural competencies of St Matthew’s.

Supporting women in the farming business While the traditional stereotype of a farmer may be male, of course this is not the case in reality, as the team at arm ocus knows well. early of the company’s employees are women, and many of them are farmers themselves or come from a farming background. Award-winning arm ocus is ew ealand’s leading provider of farm nancial management software, and with thousands of farming customers across the country, the company’s Business evelopment Specialist atrina Mc lelland says that the team constantly hears about inspiring women working in the agricultural sector. “On nternational Women’s ay we ran a social media competition where people could nominate an inspirational female farmer to go into a pri e draw. We had a phenomenal response, including hundreds of comments about ama ing women in farming.” There is a common theme running through the feedback that the company receives, especially from female customers.

“One thing we notice is that the women we speak to usually wear several hats. Many are juggling farming alongside off-farm work as well as parenting and other commitments. As a result, they value their time and fre uently talk about the importance of having the right tools to work smarter, not harder,” says atrina. This is where arm ocus comes in, with time-saving automations that help take care of day-to-day nancials, as well as powerful management reporting and planning functionality that allows farmers to make informed and con dent decisions for their business. arm ocus also supports farming women through its partnership with Agri-Women’s evelopment Trust. “AW T aims to empower women in the primary sector through its e cellent educational programmes a mission that strongly aligns with our own vision of pu ng farmers in control of their nancial goals, so we are proud to be involved,” says atrina.

PHILLIPPA ROIL.

Wairarapa’s Unique One Stop Marketing shop “There is no greater feeling then seeing someone else’s business succeed from the help you have given them,” according to Phillippa Roil-Glendenning. This is her main objective and the way she measures her success as the Owner and Marketing Strategist at PR Marketing Solutions (PRMS), as well as why she was keen to become the Wairarapa Area Manager for Venus Women in Business. A national Women’s networking organisation that she has been a part of for over six years, so far establishing two successful groups for the Wairarapa Region. Phillippa has over 20 successful years’ in Sales and Marketing, her mantra is that every business needs a clear marketing strategy. “What works for one business, may not work for another. It is important to have an individualised plan, depending on what is trying to be achieved. There needs to be clear focus and direction.” Often businesses fail because they divide their marketing to multiple providers. Someone looking after the website, another the social media and then a different person helping with Google for example.

“This fragmentation can be so detrimental to the overall marketing goal.” At PRMS they provide a one-stop marketing shop. This ensures a consistency in the way your brand looks and is presented over every platform. PRMS can identify a change/trend when it occurs, and adapt the wording of adverts/website information, move advert spend or get email campaigns out immediately. This ensures better results and saves you money. Clients start with a ‘FUNdamental Marketing Plan’ that will look at the current business. “You’ll get a clear, easy-to-follow report, which will tell you what to keep, what to change, what to get rid of, and what to add into your marketing plans.” Clients can then make the changes themselves or then pass it on to Phillippa and her team. FUN in capital letters is deliberate. Phillippa makes her clients laugh, feel relaxed, and keeps it simple for even the biggest marketing novice to understand. You can get a taste of her personality from her posts that you have likely seen pop up in your own social media feeds.

Angela Hatchard owns the Ecomist franchise in Wairarapa. She’s the person to go to when you have problems with rats and mice, or if flies, cockroaches, and spiders decide to move in for the winter. Flies are a particular problem for people and her products are increasingly in demand. The quiet Ecomist dispensers sit discreetly in homes and workplaces, emitting a light insecticide, or to provide a beautiful fragrance to delete bad smells. “They delicately take care of those annoying pesky insects and the horrible odours which can ruin the ambience of any home or business,” says Angela. She is proud of the Ecomist products and for the past two and half years, has been servicing Wairarapa’s commercial places – restaurants, cafes, rest homes, childcare centres and schools, libraries. She also has pest control devices such as UV Filters and bait stations for rodent control. Qualified to work in New Zealand and Australia, she keeps businesses up-to-date and complying with council regulations. Ecomist are premium products with the

insecticide being Pyrethrin oil, derived from the chrysanthemum plant, not synthetic. This means it is safer and more effective for people and pets, being naturally derived. “Our solenoid technology sets us apart from any other dispensers on the market too. Ecomist dispensers release a fine mist, as opposed to large droplets, and this means the spray is less noticeable and stays in the air longer.” Fragrance oil for the odour neutralisers is imported from France with around 35 fragrances to choose from. Angela has three children who have all helped with the business during holidays. “It’s become a real family affair and living locally means I am always available to help customers first-hand. When you have a meal out, visit your relatives in the rest home, notice a nice smell in the office you know our dispensers are discreetly working away in the background.” Starter packs contain a dispenser, and your choice of an insect killer can or odour neutraliser. Just set and forget.

Lifestyle Residential Property Management

CHRISTIN SCHETTER (LEFT) AND PENNY ELLIOTT.

Nearly a century of legal advice faithfully continued Lawyers Penny Elliott and Christin Schetter are carrying on a longstanding tradition of providing a wide range of legal advice. Generations of Wairarapa families have entrusted their conveyancing needs, relationship property matters, trusts, wills, estates, and resource management issues to the firm of Taverner Keys & Co. Penny and Christin (pronounced Christine) are proud of their abilities to be able to offer an all-engaging service and like to think of themselves as offering the old-school style of service when people were able to get to know their lawyer and entrust them with all their business and personal matters. “It’s a privileged position that we both take seriously,” says Penny, who grew up in Pahiatua and has lived in Wairarapa most of her life. During her time raising children, she worked at Carterton School as the Administrator – looking after the school’s ‘money and buildings.’ In 2017, lawyer Barry Keys invited her to join his practice, Taverner Keys & Co. It was a legal partnership which had been established in 1963

when he joined Douglas Taverner – a lawyer who had established in Carterton in 1924. When Barry Keys died in March 2020, Penny looked for another partner. Christin Schetter joined her in August 2020 and took over Barry’s practice. The two women, along with their staff, then embarked on a year-long process of upgrading their technology and systems to future proof the firm. They are a tight knit and friendly team carrying on the almost century-old legal tradition of Taverner Keys & Co. Christin was born and raised in Munich and fell in love with New Zealand while working on a local sheep and beef farm. She went on to study law at Victoria University and graduated seven years ago. She has a particular interest in Relationship Property and Elder Law. The two women have their own clients but also work closely when issues need to be discussed and analysed. In Germany, Christin had studied farming and horticulture. She has a love of horses and loves hiking in the Tararuas.

Making the right move and following a family tradition

Great food, great coffee, and a great place to relax

Real Estate is in the genes. Following the footsteps of her late mum, Beverly Roys - a successful real estate agent in her time – Ange McLachlan officially entered the industry as a salesperson earlier this year.

“ C ome early before it gets too busy,” she says. “ ould you like a co ee?” A lready people are pouring in. M ain treet eli serves the L’A aire brand, and it goes down well as A nge talks about the past year. “ There’s always something going on and we’ve adapted during covid.

She completed her real estate training in double-quick time and sold two houses within the first six weeks of joining LJ Hooker. It was affirmation for her that she had made the right move. Ange will be well known to many as the owner of the popular ‘The Sanctuary’ which she has owned for over 14 years and still retains ownership. “I have an amazing crew at ‘The Sanctuary’ which allow me to do my dream job: looking after people during the selling and buying process in Real Estate.” Ange also had a home staging business called ‘Enhance,’ helping people prepare their properties for sale, a skill she continues to use to help her clients. ‘Enhance’ began the relationship with LJ Hooker. “The team welcomed me warmly and I

always felt part of the entire process.” Highlights so far for Ange? Meeting people, helping, and creating a relationship with clients. I initially met Helen at my first Open Home late March and now I feel like I’ve known her for years and regard her as a friend. I helped her buy the house she had always wanted and sold her house in under two weeks to achieve that goal.” Born and raised in Masterton, Ange loves the Wairarapa region which she shares with her husband, three sons and a grandson. “Ange sold me the house I have long wanted and was an excellent agent for the sale of my house. Ange was with me through the whole buying/selling experience. She gave me good advice on price, offer on house purchased, and excellent guidance and prepping to list my home for sale. She helped me find tradies for small repairs. Ange has always been warm, encouraging, and friendly. Ange has gone above and beyond.”

DARIA BORSHCHEVA.

Exquisite cakes that look and taste divine Unleash your imagination and think of a special cake you’d like to celebrate and/ or share with others. It may be your upcoming wedding, a baby shower, a special anniversary, or simply to say, ‘thank you.’ Daria at CakeLabNZ will produce a creation that is too good to eat (almost!). She has been making cakes for people for the past few years and in March 2021 stepped out and set up in premises in Daniell Street, Featherston where she could display some of her gastronomic creations and have more kitchen space. She shares with the catering company, Ant North. CakeLabNZ’s delights include meringue lemon tarts, tiramisu croissants, honey cake, Napolean cake laced with jam and flaky pastry, macarons of many flavours, and naked cakes draped with fresh flowers. She creates personalised cakes to match the event and person. One of Daria’s favourite cakes was one created recently for a wedding in the couple’s garden. It was a moist chocolate cake with home-made caramel inside and textured buttercream and gold leaf outside. To make this cake she collaborated with a florist and the husband-to-be, as he was a chocolatier.

Daria grew up in the Russian city of Omsk in Siberia. Her husband, Anatoly, is an IT programmer and when he was offered work in New Zealand, the couple thought they would try living down under. Daria worked as a writer and editor and had always had a passion for food – beautiful food that was presented exquisitely. Her aim is to tempt Kiwi tastebuds to try different flavour combinations and be more curious about texture and flavour. They take little convincing, once people have tasted her cooking, Daria says she has many customers returning. One family last year had her making a few different cakes including for two weddings.

SANDY MURPHY.

Art Department led by the experienced You would think the best person to head an art department in a store would be an artist. Right? That’s exactly what Paper Plus Masterton has with Sandy Murphy, who is not only a successful artist, but she has a huge art knowledge she’s willing and eager to share with curious customers. You know – the brushes, paints, pencils, pens, canvas, paper types. Sandy explains that Paper Plus owners, Warwick and Sarah Delmonte wanted each of the store’s departments to be headed by knowledgeable people. Customers know when they come in with questions, they will get quality help. When Sandy joined Paper Plus, she was thrilled to take over the art section – and expand it. From a handful of felt pens and notepads, the current display of art equipment would be impressive in any gallery, or to the most accomplished artist. “We wanted to offer all ranges of art equipment encouraging people to dip into their artistic side. We want

to nurture that,” says Sandy. “Covid has given us time and permission to investigate our own talent and I am seeing this in the people coming in to buy art stuff.” She still has the felt pens, coloured pencils, and notepads but there’s also an extensive range of quality acrylic and oil paints, a vast range of paint brushes, and the paper choice is legendary. “Once you get into your art, the last thing you want is for the materials you use to let you down. It can easily put you off and so buying quality is vital.” Sandy especially enjoys selling to the ‘grandparent market’ – guiding them to encourage grandchildren to be artistic. Sandy qualified with a Diploma in Visual Arts from UCOL in Masterton in 2002 and has continued learning from local artists like Jane Sinclair and Sandy’s aunt, Mavis Newland. Sandy enjoys working in oils, but watercolours are her favourite. She also loves talking about the art world – call in have a chat. You’ll be amazed what you learn.

Liv ing in constant pain is no fun. Wairarapa physiotherapist J ulianne O’Donnell is the first to agree, having experienced it herself. However, she is adamant people don’t have to suffer as learning manag ement tools and/ or exercises can be a path to a pain- free life. “ Pain is stealing people’s liv es and it doesn’t have to be this way,” she says. With ov er 3 0 years physiotherapy experience, Julianne teaches people to care for their bodies. She doesn’t promise to remov e the pain altog ether but aims to assist in changing a tudes, helping clients understand their bodies, and teach them productive ways to deal with pain. “Medication certainly helps, but there are tools like pain education, effective distraction, and relaxation techniques, which help g reatly. E xercise is v ital as then the body produces its own endorphins, which are one of the strongest pain reliefs out.” J ulianne runs Pain Manag ement Wairarapa from her clinic in B oundary Road, Masterton. With her is fellow physiotherapist, Judy rown, and the two women offer a fully equipped g ymnasium for on- the- spot exercise. It’s a quiet, intimate space where

clients can exercise under a g uiding eye. Research shows one in five New Z ealanders liv e with persistent pain and J ulianne says it is increasing in prevalence with our ageing population. She shares scary statistics that women ov er 5 0 years hav e lost 3 0 per cent of their muscle mass and by years, it’s down to per cent. “As we age, it is harder to recov er from injury and so we need to keep our strength up,” Sport injuries, car accidents, back and neck problems, arthritis, and migraines are all major causes of both acute and persistent pain. There are just two dedicated pain clinics in New ealand – Auckland and Christchurch. Wairarapa is lucky to hav e Pain Manag ement in its midst. J ulianne says allied with the physiotherapy she offers, she likes to get to know her clients, understand their liv es and teach them about the nerv e and muscular system. I t helps people learning to cope with injury and their pain. Depending on the type of pain, it can sometimes take just one session with J ulianne to establish a ‘ life plan’ and to learn self help techniques. Julianne is a licensed ACC practitioner and can order x- rays and ultrasounds. So, if you have an underlying pain issue which is ruining your enjoyment of life – Julianne is the one to call on.

DEB ALLEN.

Enjoying the simple pleasure of cycling Cycling was Deb Allen’s favourite pastime when she was growing up. And the sheer pleasure of being on a bike continues for her. “It was something I could do on my own, with my siblings or my mates. It gave us all freedom to go wherever we wanted. It was a such a simple pleasure and undervalued by our young minds.” Today’s myriad cycle trails and paths which crisscross New Zealand offer this same pleasure and many adults are now embracing that same feeling of their youth. “Oh, I’m a bit nervous, I haven’t ridden a bike since I was a kid” is something Deb often hears when showing customers one of My Ride’s Electric Bikes. But her gentle encouragement and product knowledge quickly gets them sorted and they are out riding those trails in no time. She loves to see them revisit the store and listen to their adventures of how far they have been and all the wonderful cycle trails experienced. Many have been experiencing and rediscovering holidays within New Zealand. Over the past couple of years, this has been a boom for areas blessed with recreational cycle trails.

The young customers are Deb’s favourite, and she loves hearing about their achievements as they gain confidence and move up through the bike sizes. Deb and husband John have six grandchildren ranging from one to nine years and all love riding their bikes. Family trips always include cycling and that’s a lot of bikes to take! The past couple of years have been a challenge for small businesses and Deb and the team, found the lack of stock and severe delivery delays a huge frustration. But many customers have been patient and have had lengthy waits for their special order. Deb has been a part of the cycling business for over 15 years, beginning at Lambert Cycles, then becoming a Co-Owner of Avantiplus Masterton, and now My Ride Masterton. Deb has fond memories of cycling legend Brian Lambert who passed away in February 2022, and she says some of his quirky sales techniques are still used in the store today. Deb is joined in-store by Co-Owner Andy Curtis-Cody, Mechanic John Stevens and after-school assistants Matt Baker and Oli Memelink-Anderson. Deb’s husband John likes to join the staff on a Saturday.

Claire Iggulden loves clever design – even better when it is translated into a beautiful home that reflects the owners living within. With partner Mike, they like nothing better than a drive around different towns checking out developments and new builds, gleaning ideas, and inspiration. “It drives the kids mad.” She laughs. Claire and Mike purchased the Wairarapa franchise for David Reid Homes in July 2021. “We like the high-end homes David Reid is renowned for – the quality and innovative personalisation of its designs” says Claire who has a background in building estimations and operations. They decided to take the exciting opportunity of purchasing the David Reid franchise, bringing it to Wairarapa. David Reid has been a proud New Zealand brand since 1993 and has grown to have franchised branches throughout the country. There are stunning display homes scattered around New Zealand too and several have won Master Builder House of the Year awards. David Reid’s inaugural display home in Wairarapa is due to start construction in Greytown. The four-bedroom home offers the elegant, yet laidback, open plan living which New Zealanders embrace.

Claire says it will give people a chance to see first-hand the stunning product that David Reid Homes produce. Claire grew up in South Taranaki. She is familiar with Wairarapa as her parents had purchased land outside Martinborough and she was among the so-called ‘family labour’ who visited and helped develop the block. Later when working with a council planning department, she discovered her interest in building. With David Reid Homes in Wairarapa, she runs the sales and operation side of the business. She enjoys dealing with clients and will dip into project managing when construction is occurring. “We are there from the very first design idea to handing over the keys. It’s such a rewarding role.”

That’s special enough but what’s also interesting is that the 29-strong staff are all women and all work flexible hours based on their life commitments. Nicola Haglund is Manager of the Masterton practice and says the flexibility works well and means everyone enjoys their roles and are very productive. There are ten veterinarians, seven vet nurses, eight in admin, a stock manager, rural animal technician and a retail manager.

Vet Services is a Group Practice with five independent clinics in Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay. Nicola is one of the three shareholders along with Vet, Sarah Wolland and Hawkes Bay Vet Services. Continuing education for all the staff is vital and welcomed to help keep everyone abreast of veterinary trends. Companion animals make up around 65 per cent of the Masterton clinic’s patients, the rest being on farm treatments. There are two spacious waiting areas so cats and dogs can be comfortably separate. Four consultation rooms mean minimum waiting times with 15 or 30 minute appointments times available. Vets give their undivided attention and can order laboratory and blood samples for prompt diagnoses. The consultation rooms vary in size, and one has an additional entry direct into the carpark. This helps owners bring in nervous or aggressive pets without having to pass through reception. It is also a special room dedicated for euthanasia when the animal can then be taken appropriately home afterwards. Did you know – a pet can improve your health? The value of having a pet. Pets offer companionship. This is especially beneficial to people who live alone. Pets reduce the stress of life. Research has shown that the simple

Part of the Small Animal team act of petting an animal reduces stress. As you stroke the fur or hair of a pet, both your body and your pet release oxytocin. This hormone is linked to emotional bonding. Playing with a pet also raises your levels of dopamine and serotonin – hormones which make you feel good! Pets can help improve mental health. Free pick up and delivery for grooming your dog

Thriving in a growing & critical industry

D ionne P ugh has b een grooming dogs for 1 3 years from her F irst S treet salon in Lansdowne. She has often provided a free pick up and drop off service for the dogs she’s caring for around the M asterton, C arterton and G reytown areas.

The more remote and rugged the environment is – the more the Supplejack Contracting team thrive.

“With covid, I’m finding some owners are preferring to not go out as much and grooming their dog is not high on the priority list,” says Dionne. “But it is important for many dogs to be groomed regularly to keep them healthy, particularly the eye area and keeping the feet clear of debris and grass seed and nails trimmed.” Adopting a regular grooming cycle is important for the dog as it becomes familiar with the process and therefore happy and relaxed, enjoying the routine. Health-wise, trimming dog’s faces is important in stopping hair interfering with the eyes. Dionne encourages regular twomonthly grooming as optimal care. “Grooming, clipping, or stripping, is vital for all coat types. If left too long, we must cut the hair too short and that is not good for the dog, especially in winter.” She explains that when a

dog gets wet, soggy, and smelly, after swimming or outdoors in rain, people b ring them inside to the warm, b ut if the dog’s coat is too long, it can take days for that coat to properly dry, and this can cause skin issues. Dionne says often owners will not bring their dog in for a groom because of the chilly weather. But it can be of great comfort for the dog, as the groom plumps up the coat and gives it more warmth. The grooming process begins with a shampoo and condition in a deep bath. The dog’s coat is then dried with a high velocity dryer which uffs up the coat. The brushing which follows, strips all loose hair and the treatment is completed with clipping, if necessary, to give the coat shape. This care is equally important for short haired dogs, such as Labradors, and those with woolly coats such as Poodles. D ionne is assisted b y J esse M orrison, who does the bathing and pregrooming. They care, on average, for around eight dogs per day. They are proud of the new vegan range of dog care products – Amazonia. Made in Brazil, it’s an all-natural range.

Ancient art of upholstery alive and well in Edith Street Re-upholstering people’s treasured furniture, and giving them a new lease on life, is what makes Kath Wilkie very happy these days. “I sort of get between people’s treasures and the dump,” she laughs. When this former Physical Education and Outdoor Education teacher suffered injury resulting in a hip replacement, it encouraged her to reassess her life and question what type of work she’d like to do next. Forever the creative – visiting her garden, you’ll get the idea – she began mending and fixing up pieces of furniture. Her mother, Judy Jeffrey, is a qualified tailor and the pair have been teaching upholstery classes for the past 20 years, initially at Makoura and Wairarapa colleges and now at REAP in Masterton. There’s a variety of lessons from beginners (Wednesday evenings) to advanced (weekends). The classes attract all types of people and ages, and it suits Kath beautifully, merging her teaching experience with her creative side.

Kath will be known to many past students at Wairarapa College where she taught Outdoor Education and PE for 11 years. She also taught outdoor education in Auckland. A special Ministry of Education contract teaching in Rarotonga was going well, until she had her accident, which resulted in her life change. Kath’s latest project has been a chaise lounge for a farming family in Wairarapa who discovered the dilapidated piece in an old farmhouse. It belonged to their ancestors. Stuffed with horsehair and hay, it still had faded kauri trim, stained to look like mahogany. Slowly re-building to its former glory, Kath gets help from the talented volunteers at the Masterton Men’s Shed. “They are my godsend.” For this project, they have turned new legs out of macrocarpa and cleaned up the kauri. “People can’t believe what we can do – resurrecting what looks beyond repair – and then it becomes a much-treasured piece with a family story.”

Lansdowne House

P oppy’ s at Home

Create special memories in a unique and graceful dwelling Caring for such a large and grand dwelling as Lansdowne House in Masterton is a major feat in itself. Cooking for and hosting functions of all shapes and sizes, from AGMs to weddings and family reunions, is also something Kadia Merralls does with grace and aplomb. In 2004, Kadia and husband, Richard, moved from Auckland to Masterton and applied their extensive business experience into running the threestorey Lansdowne House as an event venue. They lived on the first floor of the gracious Tudor dwelling and opened the ground floor to guests for all manner of events to celebrate. It has become the place where lifelong memories are made. When Richard died four years ago, Kadia gallantly carried on with a team of loyal staff who support her. Kadia’s legendary cooking attracts people. The discerning immediately recognise that everything is home-made in the Lansdowne kitchen – right down to the hot English mustard for her honey glazed ham. Her Norwegian dish, the Gravlax Salmon, is famous, equally so is her raspberry pavlova tower and feijoa ice cream. Lansdowne House was built in 1924 for solicitor Hugh Williams. It has beautiful Rimu panelling throughout, including the grand staircase, often used by brides alighting from the first floor. A honeymoon suite is featured on the first floor with the nostalgic atmosphere of yesteryear but with all modern facilities cleverly entwined. The home’s beautiful condition, almost a century on, is testament to Kadia’s loving care and attention to detail. Even the original servants quarters

tucked in a corner of the second floor is in great condition, with its own private twisting staircase to the kitchen. The graceful trees show off the home’s grounds beautifully and autumn colouring is especially aweinspiring. There are several porches guests can lounge on to relax and take in the garden. It’s also a great place in the cooler months. There are six working fireplaces, superb wooden floors, leadlight windows, and window seats and 12 spectacular chandeliers. With the warm red glow of pelmet lighting and the abundance of flickering candles, there’s an atmosphere which can’t be replicated in modern buildings.

community. They have plans to marry “when we get time.” Hamilton-born, Nic was raised in Hamilton and then Hawkes Bay and worked extensively for Michael Hill Jeweller in New Zealand and Australia. Between them, they have five sons.

The shop is a feast of colour, which makes you smile on entering. Many take your eye, from the Union Jack boots, the Floral utterly feminine ones, the elegant red pumps, to the heels with zebra stripes, the woollen slippers from Croatia, or the black stomping boots with attitude. There’s something at Evie May for everyone. Falling onto one of the gold brocade couches, you’ll be trying on all manner of footwear. It’s a complete experience.

Encouraged by Nic and mentored by the accounting firm, Sellar and Sellar, they signed the lease on a new premises in the re-vamped Kuripuni shopping village.

Amanda Sim has had a love affair with shoes for over 25 years. “Shoes are not just footwear. They’re a vibe, an identity, a feeling ”. She knows her trade and how to personally fit your foot to the shoe of your dreams. “I dare customers to dream a little, try on something out of their comfort range, then, when they see them on and find them so comfortable, they can’t resist.” Amanda and Nic dared to dream about owning their own shoe store in early 2020 after Saunders Outlet Store in Masterton closed. “It was a risky time too, with Covid, but we had a vision and knew it would be well received.” Napier born and raised, Amanda had managed Saunders for 10 years in Masterton and couldn’t bear to think of the region without a decent shoe shop. And if it’s not enough that there’s a shoe love affair going on, Amanda and Nic found each other five years ago and have settled into owning a small business and a lifestyle property in the Mauriceville

“And then came the fun part getting in stock.” Amanda knows her footwear. Early experiences were at the legendary McKinlays Footwear Company in Dunedin where leather shoes have been custom made there since 1879. She also learned about made to measure shoes with the Last Footwear Company. These days, she has a handle on what brands are comfortable, affordable, and hard wearing, as well as stylish, outrageous, and some downright quirky. “We have classic to the almost ridiculous, and everything in between.” Brands she stocks include Bresley, Django and Juliette, Fly London, Gelato, Helium, Eject, Keds, Rollie, Rilassare and more, and come from just about every corner of the globe. And the name Evie May? It came from a whole host of places! Annabelle, who also works part time at Evie May, and is like a member of our family, has a fiery three-year old daughter named Evie May. Nic’s middle name is Eve, and her great grandmother has ties to the name Eve. So the universe sort of orchestrated that one!

Ears to You

Pet Angel Wings – Thriving in the Wairarapa LIZ MILLS.

Making the world lighter for people – one ear at a time! ‘Delicious’ is hardly the adjective most people would use to describe what comes out their ears when Liz Mills cleans them – but that’s exactly how she excitedly describes her find! “I startle some people with my enthusiasm when clearing out a good wax build-up, but I know the result will excite the ear owner,” she laughs. Liz is a registered nurse who specialises in ear health. She is passionate about her work. Getting great delight from clearing people’s ear canals and reopening a whole new, crystal-clear world to them. “The look on people’s faces when you have cleared their ears, is priceless. “Some say they feel instantly better; others cannot believe the clarity of sound, and others say they just feel ‘light’.” So, are your ears troubling you? Do they feel blocked, feel full, itchy, discharging, your tinnitus increased, or your hearing changed? Liz is certainly the person you should be visiting. She is based at Masterton Medical’s Wellness

Centre behind Wairarapa Hospital. Liz moved into ear specialisation after qualifying as a registered nurse. “Ear health is vital for overall well-being and affects all ages.” She created ‘Ears to You,’ in 2016, now with several clinics throughout Wairarapa and having contracts with Wairarapa DHB, and many rest homes. Her expertise is even more widespread. She visits rest homes in Palmerston North, Feilding and Taupo and opened a clinic on the Kapiti Coast at Paraparaumu in March 2022. If Liz detects anything serious and needing further treatment, she refers directly to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) physician. If an infection needs antibiotics, Liz has direct contact with GPs to ensure a prescription without having to make yet another appointment. However, mostly ears just need a good check and a wax clean to get people feeling good again. Liz recommends an annual check of your ears. It is well worth it.

Carterton District Council

THE WOMEN OF CARTERTON DISTRICT COUNCIL AT CARRINGTON PARK’S BIG RED CHAIRS.

CDC’s women rise to the challenge The Carterton District Council’s team rose to the issues presented by Covid-19 challenges. The varied nature of council business means CDC staff had to be adaptable. Versatility and learning new skills are prerequisites at CDC. We’re an adaptable bunch! The difficulties of the past few years have been a testing time for all and CDC’s wahine stand tall and proud. Front office; parks and reserve teams; operations; events; animal control; building and planning. Our team has kept the district ticking, despite the setbacks. Every aspect of Council operations has changed to accommodate the far-reaching directives handed down from central government. The Council’s duty of care to our community and employees meant the

traffic light system was adhered to stringently.

The pandemic had a significant impact on the hospitality industry too.

This meant taking steps to ensure the safety of everyone – those who work at Council, visits facilities, and uses council services.

Carterton Events Centre is an important part of the Council’s services and has had shows struck from the calendar because of Covid-19.

“When some members of our community expressed frustrations with the traffic light system, our team listened and tried to help,” said Kelly, our Corporate Services Manager.

Jenni, our Events Centre Sales and Marketing Coordinator, said shows returning to Carterton is a great relief.

“The Covid-19 Protection Framework rules set by the government meant we had to change the way we worked over the past two years. Not everyone was happy about these changes. As a result, frontline staff faced unfair verbal abuse. We’re immensely proud of our staff for putting their own health on the line to keep services running for our district.”

“Throughout each lockdown, events and hospitality was the first industry hit, and the last to crank up again. “The team was able to be honest and comfortable with each other to express how we felt - and we didn’t feel great. For me, it did affect my motivation – how many hits can you take?” says Jenni. Robyn, our Democratic Services Officer, said adapting to the new rules was a challenge, but also presented opportunities.

“Council had gone through Covid lockdowns in 2020 and 2021, but I arrived after this, and meeting technology had changed. It threw up new IT issues. This proved to be a learning curve but also helpful for my role.” She said all the learning opportunities will prove useful in the long term. “With staff away with Covid, I had to fill in for other service areas. “This helped me get to know other team members and improved my understanding of their work. Working in a team is about collaboration. Overall, that experience has been a winwin for both Council and I.”

Creating beautiful homes and adding colour to your life Sue Keene’s love of colour has taken her down the interior design path where she helps others translate their dreams into reality in their homes and workspaces. Her business, Envisage Interiors, has been running for three years and the burgeoning interest in home building and renovation has her creative juices flowing. She has ‘done up’ many homes of her own and decided to make it official, so she could offer her experience and service, by gaining her Certificate in Interior Design through the Southern Institute of Technology. The study inspired her even more and a friend encouraged her into setting up in business. Envisage Interiors was created, and she has not looked back. Sue caters for individual clients and works for developers and builders creating show homes, asking her to produce an eye-catching interior. Some assignments can mean working with clients for several years. “Working alongside willing people, who are open to suggestions, is so rewarding and exciting. It sometimes pushes people’s comfort zones, when I mention introducing a black wall or bold wallpaper, for example, but often

they thank me profusely afterwards, pleased they had had the courage”. “Many people love living in their homes but don’t have the confidence, or skill, to know what colour goes with what, and how to arrange a room to its best advantage.” When called upon to help, Sue meets her client and ascertains their lifestyle and what they want from their home. “There’s so many styles from formal to bohemian, 50s and 60s ‘old school’ to Victorian classic and the uncluttered warehouse look.” After the discussion and ideas clarified, Sue sets up a colourboard offering paint hues and textiles and this is what she works with, alongside her client, to establish the final décor. She will give advice on furniture too. Sue cannot over-state how important colour is to a room. There are many complementary and contrasting colours which work, but then there is the popular analogous theme using similar shades in a variety of ways. So, if your home feels tired and bland, Sue may be just who you are looking for to help brighten your life.

SHELLEY MASON.

One stop party shop on the move There’s always a great festive at m osp h ere around t h e c om p any , Festival Hire.

events caterers, celebrants, venues and Festival Hire. All joining together to create ama ing events.

Shelley is quick to point out that the business would not be where it is now without the fantastic team they have working with them, Ga , Mel, Hayley, Joanna, uai-jon, Tom and Maia. Shelley and Greg’s children Dylan and Abigail 3 like to help with rearranging the shelves.

With such a solid base, they feel confident about moving the business forward. Having a large space where all their equipment can be under one roof will be ideal. There will be ample display space too which excites Shelley. Their Hampton Marquee is ever popular for hire, with its vintage vibe and woodgrain poles.

The event hire and decoration company is thriving after years of hard graft and with exclusive supplier contracts, and weddings on the increase, they are expanding. But what’s got them even more excited is that Shelley and Greg are moving their operation to a purpose-built building in the new Poplars Business Park, west Masterton. They hope to be in by the end of the year. It’s been five years of hard graft and trying to survive through covid, but people are now wanting to get out and celebrate. She describes Wairarapa as having a ‘treasure box’ of events and often people are spoiled for choice when it comes to happenings. She says covid fostered a coming together of businesses and services involved in

Shelley and Greg continue using local products and suppliers whenever possible and are busy concentrating on a range of biodegradable, funky and specialty balloons. Once you’ve bought and enjoyed a quality balloon, there’s no going back to the cheap and nasty. She’s bold enough to describe their balloons as ‘trendse ng’. They have a vast array of children’s products to augment any party. All you need to do is ask and we can show you what we can supply. Shelley and the team like to lead clients from the beginning of an idea to the fantastic end event, guiding them through all the necessary intricacies.

Where the magic starts ...

YULIA SAVROVA.

Personalised salon offering great hair styles Hairdressers Yulia Savrova and Ava Bradley at Allure Concept Boutique offer a peaceful, welcoming environment, right in the heart of Masterton, where giving you a great hairstyle, also comes with pampering and an environmentally-friendly range of products. The stylish boutique salon puts you immediately at ease, and you happily allow yourself to succumb to their expertise.

The salon also has rooms for beautician work and Yulia is on the lookout for a beauty therapist. Yulia has introduced the Paul Mitchell brand of haircare to Wairarapa. With its motto: ‘Style isn’t born, it’s groomed’ she’s proud of the vegan and glutenfree products and of the company which was one of the first to stand up against animal testing.

Yulia had spent a decade in Wellington hair salons, only learning New Zealand hairdressing trends and it was her great ambition to own her own business.

Allure also stocks the award-winning medical skincare range ‘Environ’. This South African brand is a step up from regular skin care ranges. Yulia points out it is based around Vitamin A, antioxidants, peptides, and hyaluronic acid. It was founded 30 years ago by plastic surgeon Dr Des Fernandes, who has done extensive research into refreshing skin through the ageing process.

Yulia purchased the long-established Masterton hair and beauty therapy business, CHE, in January 2019. With a fresh new alluring name, she is proud of the service she provides. She loves the artistic endeavour of hairdressing and enjoys it when clients are keen to experiment with new styles.

Call in to experience a great hair experience and be introduced to quality products.

It was love that brought Yulia to New Zealand and eventually to Wairarapa. She joined her husband, George, when he studied in Wellington and after the birth of their daughter, they looked to settle in Wairarapa.

The salon is also home to the beautiful French haircare product Angel En Provence. The range does not use any of the nasties and is 100% cruelty free, never tested on animals.
