SEAN NYBOER.
Got an issue with your TV – call Sean Nyboer Today people are spoiled for choice when it comes to what they can watch on TV - freeto-air, Sky, TV On Demand, Netflix, YouTube and more. But one thing that hasn’t changed is that they still need a television set, plus a host of other devices from Freeview boxes & Chromecasts or Apple TVs to aerials and satellite dishes. Sean Nyboer is able to install and problem solve anything to do with a TV. He brings 15 years of experience to each job, assisted in administration by Caroline Nyboer. Over the years Sean has found everything from trees and hills, to ride-on mowers and egg incubators have affected reception. “Generally, I’ve got a good idea of what the problem is when I visit. Most jobs can be completed in one to two hours.” Hills and lines of trees can be a particular problem in areas in Wairarapa where people are using an Ultra High Frequency (UHF) aerial to pick up reception from the tower sited east of Greytown, Sean says.
Sean can set up Smart televisions to access Netflix, YouTube and other streaming services or ‘non Smart’ TVs with Chromecast or Apple TV so that internet content can be viewed. He can also install home theatre systems. Sean goes the extra mile for his customers, mounting televisions on walls, and making sure that TV outlets are in the best locations and cables neatly installed. Owners of newly built homes are often disappointed to discover the house has been wired to a standard plan which is not suitable. Sean can rectify this situation. Or better still, he can customise the cabling for a new home in the first place. Sean also looks after businesses, and provides solutions for rural broadband customers through Wireless Nation. Sean has earned a reputation for being friendly and trustworthy, with customers regularly commenting on how impressed and happy they are with his work. Phone 06 378 7548 or Email office@cableguy.nz
For homes with satellite dishes, these often need parts replaced or realignment, he says.

TFM Tractors
TFM TRACTORS RETAIL REP JAMES HANNON (LEFT) WITH THOMAS AND RICHARD KERSHAW AND THE FENDT 722.
Fendt 722 ticks all the boxes Thomas Kershaw, owner of T Kershaw Contracting, has been putting his new Fendt 722 through its paces since he bought the tractor from TFM Tractors in April. The South Wairarapa business, which has a specialist cropping farm as well as agricultural contracting business, has used the Fendt for 500 work hours so far. Thomas was looking for a versatile tractor that could be used for ploughing, drilling and baleage. “It had a good reputation for reliability and was priced at a very good level for the type of tractor you are getting. It also offers comfort and ease of operation. “Everything is set up so your left hand stays on the joy stick all day. There are only one or two buttons you need all day. “All the implements have a profile in the tractor’s computer system, so as long as the operator can locate those profiles out of the computer, all they need to do is push ‘go’ and ‘end’ and the tractor does all the work for them.” Thomas had previously bought drills, baleage and rakes from the Solway business.
“TFM Tractors gives pretty good service. I’ve always found that if there is a problem, they get it sorted for us quickly.
TFM Tractors holds the franchise for the AGCO group of brands - Massey Ferguson, Fendt and Iseki.
“If there is a breakage, they do their best to get a replacement machine to us so we can keep going.
They are also proud retailers of Krone, Supreme, Monosem and Einbock machinery.
“They are proactive at getting a demonstration unit on farm if there is a tractor or implement we are interested in. You get to try before you buy.”
Massey Ferguson GC1700 the perfect all-rounder TFM Tractors has just received three Massey Ferguson GC1700s. Their arrival had been a delayed one, due to Covid’s impact on world trade, but well worth the wait. These compact tractors are a simple, versatile, and powerful workhorse. Suitable for both residential and professional use, the MF GC1700 delivers across the board performance. With one tractor you can mow the lawn, landscape the flowerbed, till the garden, and dig a trench.
The Massey Ferguson 5700 series is TFM Tractor’s top seller. It is suitable for a variety of purposes and especially popular with dairy and sheep & beef farmers. The larger Fendt models, such as the 724, have found favour with agricultural contractors, while the smaller models such as the 209Vs are being used on many vineyards around Wairarapa. TFM Tractors sells AGCO Green Harvest for hay gear and balers, Bertolini sprayers, Buckton trailers and bale feeders, Farmgard mulchers, spikes rotors, and grader blades, and Fieldmaster toppers and mowers, and any other equipment as required by clients. Serving the rural community from Pahiatua to Wellington, TFM Tractors sells products that are built to handle local conditions. It provides excellent after-sales support, with ongoing training for its workshop technicians, all of whom are AGCO trained.
THE MASSEY FERGUSON GC1700.
TFM Tractor’s mobile mechanics do the majority of repairs and servicing out in the field. TFM Tractors has a big range of tractor parts and engineering parts. For any queries contact Cyril Butler or James Hannon on 06 370 0390.

Langlands Motorcycles
Rathkeale College
THE LANGLANDS SALES TEAM (FROM LEFT) GRANT LANGLANDS, BROCK SURRIDGE AND GREY MARTIN.
Here to support the rural community Grant Langland and his sales team at Langlands Honda Motorcycles are motivated by more than just selling bikes. They have strong relationships with many in the rural community and believe that by selling the best product, they are helping rural businesses to thrive. Langlands also believes in supporting the rural community through sponsorships and donations. The Honda ATVs, Side-By-Sides and motorcycles have been designed specifically for the rural New Zealand environment. For instance, back in 2016, a group of technicians from Honda, led by the Chief Engineer for Honda’s Technology Department, visited Wairarapa to research the requirements of ATVs and side-by-sides in New Zealand.
Customers are always welcome to “try before they buy” with the sales team happy to take a bike on-farm for a try out. The three sales staff are all knowledgeable and experienced when it comes to what farmers need. Grant Langland established the business in 1994 and has been selling ATVs, Side-BySides and motorcycles to the Wairarapa’s rural community ever since. Grey Martin grew up on a dairy farm at Kahutara in South Wairarapa and has been selling Hondas with Langlands for over 10 years. Brock Surridge, born and bred in Masterton, has been a keen dirt biker for many years and is a fully qualified motorcycle mechanic turned salesperson.
Honda’s bikes are designed for reliability and easy servicing, with readily available parts. This means they don’t cost an arm and a leg to repair, and they get good prices when resold.
The business donates cash and prizes to innumerable groups including the North Island Sheep Dog Trials, Ngawi Big Three fishing competition, Eventing Wairarapa equestrian competition, Gladstone Rugby Club, Wairarapa Sheep & Beef Farmer of the Year, and school newsletters.
Langlands Motorcycles has the biggest range of ATVs and side-by-sides in Wairarapa, with one to suit every person, every farm and purpose.
“We like to support the rural community through cost-effective solutions for rural businesses, and donations to the community,” says Grant.
Honda also offers a range of two wheelers that dairy farmers in particularly find a less expensive, but never-the-less effective tool.
Langlands also contributes to the community through employing 20 staff in Masterton and Greytown, including three apprentices.

Rathkeale College Land Lab - an outstanding learning environment The Rathkeale Land Lab is a valuable production, research and teaching facility for our students. With the recent purchase of land adjacent to the college, of which 3ha is effective, staff, students, and the community are excited about the redevelopment of this area to further benefit the students’ learning. The total area of the Land Lab is 8.5ha. This enables students to be exposed to a variety of production systems, from sheep production to horticulture, and cropping to environmental best practice. We believe it is important that students get hands on experience and are exposed to technologies used in modern New Zealand farming. We want our students to be guardians of the environment and have an appreciation for it. These facilities allow us to deliver meaningful and relevant courses in both Agricultural Science and Agribusiness, with both of these courses having broad appeal for our students. 2021 has so far seen the following highlights: Future Beef Competition: - 1st and 3rd in Vet Services Intermediate Modules - Winners of the Generation Angus NZ Education Award
Shearing: - Shearing can be chosen as a summer sport - Two beginner shearing courses run in conjunction with UCOL, with Elite Wool Industry Training - A team of four students were the winners of the New Zealand Rural Games Secondary Schools Shearing Championship o Plus Best Quality points awarded for the competition FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year: - 1st and 2nd at the FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year East Coast Regionals - 2nd in the FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final held in Christchurch o Over the two teams representing the East Coast Region they received: 1st in Farmlet, 1st in Face-off Quiz, and 1st in Modules. Head of Agriculture and Agribusiness, Ms Coadette Low, was named a finalist in the Primary Industries New Zealand Emerging Leader Award Category. For further information on these and other opportunities that exist at Rathkeale College please contact office@rathkeale.school.nz Please note, limited places are still available at some levels for 2022.

Griffiths Drilling

FUELLED UP READY TO DRILL FOR WATER.
Your local experts in new and refurbished water bores This year Griffiths Drilling is celebrating 50 years of drilling water bores in Wairarapa and greater Wellington region. When Gordon Griffiths started the business in 1971 he would come over to Wairarapa from Wellington with his 16-year-old son Mel who is now managing director. Five years ago Mel opened an office in East Street, Greytown which now has five local staff out of the 40 staff who work for the business. Griffiths Drilling is becoming increasingly busy in Wairarapa, drilling bores for anyone needing a consistent water supply, including farmers, subdivisions, commercial businesses, councils, and rural residents. Other services include servicing, down hole camera inspections, pump installation and water sampling. Griffiths Drilling has a comprehensive knowledge of Wairarapa’s ground aquifers, geological history, topography, recharge rates, and water use. Having the drilling equipment located in Greytown rather than Wellington saves money for clients, Mel said.
“We work with them to make sure the client gets resource consent.”

The company ensures the water is clean and the source water not contaminated by the bore. Griffiths Drilling can inspect existing bores using its down hole camera, give them a clean, and redesign them if necessary. Bores need regular maintenance, Mel points out. “Over time they can start filling up with silt which gets drawn into the pump. With regular maintenance pumps and pipes last longer and don’t have to be replaced.” Mel recommends that anyone wanting a bore drilled start the process early. “Because of the increasing demand for bores, there is a big lead-in time, with quite a few steps in the process which can take months.”
The business has a good relationship with Greater Wellington who provide the consent for bores.

Parkers Roading and Contracting
Earthmoving made easy with powerful fleet With decades of experience, and a fleet of vehicles at their disposal, no earthwork job is too challenging for Robin Parker and his team. Based at Kokotau Road, Gladstone, Parkers Roading and Contracting specialises in road construction, maintenance and excavation services from a simple driveway, to a dressage training ground, to a major farm irrigation system, to a sprawling new subdivision. “Town or country, if you need earthworks done, we can offer a full range of services,” says Robin. Roading makes up a large chunk of the business - including laying, metalling and reinforcing roads, residential driveways, access ways, as well as maintenance and resurfacing of existing drives and roads. The team have been kept busy installing roading and driveways at new subdivisions throughout Wairarapa. And, thanks to the region’s ever-expanding population, there’s plenty more work to be done. “The subdivisions are the bigger jobs they can take several weeks, and use our full range of machinery, including trucks, diggers, roller and graders,” says Robin. “We’ve got many more in the pipeline.” Farm work makes up a part of the operation including the creation of farm tracks, digging of effluent ponds, offal pits, culverts, dams,
and grading and metalling roads and tracks. The business also offers land clearing with its 20 tonne Komutsu Bulldozer. A demanding work schedule - but one made easier by Robin’s dedicated drivers and operators, and powerful feet of vehicles and diggers.
Town or country, if you need “ earthworks done, we can offer a full range of services.”
These include a CAT320 excavator, 14 tonne Hyundai, new Komutsu 14 tonne digger, an ‘old faithful’ Mitsubishi 12 tonne, a 20 tonne KATO for metal extraction, and a 5.5 tonne Hitachi complete with tilt buckets and augers for drilling. New to the fleet are two Mitsubishi Fuso trucks for bulk cartage of materials, including a full range of grades of metal available from their metal yard, as well as trailers, graders and rollers. Robin enjoys “seeing a project through from beginning to end, and helping customers achieve their vision.” If you have a project in the pipeline, please contact Robin and he will be happy to come out and discuss it with you.

WAIRARAPA MITSUBISHI’S NEW LOOK SHOWROOM.

New look takes Wairarapa Mitsubishi from 1960s to 2020s
Rural refrigeration, heat pumps and air-conditioning
It is almost 60 years since Wairarapa Mitsubishi’s premises at 313 Queen Street has seen any major change.
Refrigeration, heat pumps and airconditioning are a specialty of Brooks Refrigeration Services.
The current building was opened in 1963 when the business was called Sharples Motors. Since then there have been some superficial changes, but nothing like the major overhaul which has just been completed. The initial impetus was the need to update Mitsubishi branding throughout the premises. But owners Brent and Tracey Cooper also took the opportunity to give it a contemporary look, and create a more customer and staff friendly environment. Along with a change of colour scheme, the interior of the showroom now has an open plan, modern feel.
front counter added which visitors naturally gravitate to. The Parts Manager, Service Manager and Office Manager all share an open plan space, which helps to make the business more efficient, says Brent. All the staff wear an attractive uniform, which contributes to a more professional image. Tracey and John of D. R. Borman oversaw the design and build of the project. The commencement of the refurbishment was delayed by last year’s Covid lockdown and Brent admits he and Tracey were a bit nervous about going ahead with the project once it was lifted because of the unpredictability of the economic situation. “But we are glad we did it. We have been going from strength to strength since then.”

They also install, service and repair airconditioning and heat pumps. GREG (LEFT) AND AARON.
Exciting times ahead for Wairarapa Hunting & Fishing If you have driven along the southern end of Ngaumutawa Road lately, you may have noticed a new building being constructed opposite Solway Primary School. This is going to be the new home of Wairarapa Hunting & Fishing come late October/early November, with the opening date yet to be finalised. Thanks to strong local support, the business’s present premises in Queen Street is no longer suitable, with owners Greg McKinney and Aaron Middleton needing something larger and purpose-built. The new location will be easier to access, especially when travelling along the south end of Masterton, and there will be lots of on-site parking, Aaron points out. “The new shop will give us a lot more room to display our product and will greatly enhance the shopping experience for our customers.”
Property Wash Wairarapa is available for all rural jobs - farm machinery, wool sheds, dairy sheds, implement sheds, farm houses and anything else you have in mind. We provide an affordable quality washing service anywhere in Wairarapa.

Sharpes Stock Feeds
LAST YEAR’S ZIMMATIC™ TRAILBLAZER SUSTAINABLE IRRIGATION AWARD WINNERS LEANNE AND TOM HENEGHAN, LEFT, AND SUE AND TED ROLLINSON.
Bay Irrigation supporting the 2021 Sustainable Irrigation Awards launch Bay Irrigation support for the launch of the 2021 Zimmatic™ Trailblazer Sustainable Irrigation Awards helps the agriculture sector become more innovative, sustainable and collaborative. Zimmatic Strategic Adviser Stu Bradbury says finding new ways to protect and efficiently manage water as one of our most precious natural resources is paramount.
The fact that they have upgraded their irrigation system several times as technology and efficiencies have improved, and are still looking for more opportunities, is testament to their commitment to being irrigation trailblazers.”
“Responsible irrigation and water management can make a big difference to farm productivity, the environment and the prosperity of our rural communities.”
“These farmers have a role to play in strengthening the New Zealand success story as global leaders in sustainable and profitable farming. The Awards are an opportunity for our agricultural and irrigation industries, together with the farming community, to recognise those who are making a difference.
The Trailblazer Awards aim to celebrate excellence in sustainable irrigation. The competition recognises farmers leading the way in responsible irrigation, innovative water management and environmental stewardship. It also encourages farmers to share ideas for achieving sustainable freshwater management. Irrigation NZ chair and Irricon Resource Solutions principal Keri Johnston is head judge. She says all four 2020 finalists demonstrated a high-level of achievement across all areas, which set them apart from the others. “We were so impressed by the number and calibre of entrants. All the finalists deserved commendation, but it was Ted and Sue Rollinson who deserved to win the New Zealand competition because of their dedication to continuous improvement over many years. “Ted and Sue are just as passionate today as they were when they started.
Stu Bradbury says there is an opportunity for innovative farming pioneers to influence future generations.
“We want the Awards to get people talking about smart practices and innovative technology options farmers can use to improve their irrigation and freshwater management. It’s also about promoting leadership across the primary sector. We’re looking for farmers who are in it ‘boots and all’ when it comes to water management. And then giving them a platform from which to share their stories with their peers and a wider audience.” The judges are looking for innovation in water management, steps taken to ensure sustainable water use on farm, and an obvious passion for protecting one of our most precious natural resources. Tim Beveridge Contracting
Pakohe Lime Company
THE TIM BEVERIDGE CONTRACTING FLEET. ROD AND JAMIE MCMASTER.
An earthworks business moving up
Ideal agricultural lime at Pakohe Lime Company
From small beginnings just four years ago, Tim Beveridge Contracting has become a thriving earth moving business in Wairarapa. Based out of Ngaumutawa Road in Masterton, it was started by Tim Beveridge, who grew up on a farm near Martinborough and first got into earthmoving in farming and forestry when he was 20. Three years later he started Tim Beveridge Contracting with just a truck and digger. The business has grown rapidly since then and now has five diggers, three trucks and a team of eight staff.
“I like to provide a full service. Clients can ring me with a project or task and know that I can come and carry out whatever is needed.
Tim’s clients include local council, railway maintenance, housing construction groups, shed companies, such as Affordable Sheds who have been using Tim since Tim Beveridge Contracting was established.
Tim has a wealth of knowledge in earth works and is able to offer clients advice that will benefit them financially and aesthetically.
“They have been a big part of the growth of the business, and I’m very grateful for their support.” Reliability, good communication skills, and the ability to take care of all parts of a job have been important ingredients in its success, Tim believes.
The business has a positive work culture which has also contributed to its success, Tim believes. “All the boys are polite and respectful. They are a good group of guys who work well together and get along. As well as my father who has been a huge support to the business.”

Located in hill country to the southeast of Martinborough, Pakohe Lime Company has enjoyed high praise from a visiting geologist.
■ encourage micro-organism and earthworm activity, resulting in better soil structure
The geologist estimated the lime at the quarry to be from eight to 10 million years old.
■ improve the uptake of major plant nutrients (NPK) Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium
He described it as “very high in quality” and “a soft lime which is very porous and readily available to plant life”.
■ improve water penetration in your soil
It is now a certified organic product with BioGro New Zealand.
■ improve the quality of your silage and hay
Pakohe Lime Company has been supplying Wairarapa farms with its lime for over 70 years.
■ increase milk production
The quarry was established in 1938 by J.P McMaster on the family farm. Today it is still a family-operated business, run by the founder’s grandson Rob McMaster, with Rob’s son Jamie, who has worked at the quarry for almost eight years taking on increasing responsibilities. The most common way to increase soil pH is by applying finely ground agricultural lime(CaCO3 or MgCO3). It can be used to: ■ neutralise soil acidity
■ maximise crop yield ■ improve animal health ■ counteract leaching from excessive rainfall ■ improve both your pasture and your profit Pakohe Lime Company is open Monday to Friday to supply agricultural lime, raceway lime, driveway lime, silage pit base lime, and ornamental lime rocks. The quarry is seven kilometres along Dry River Road from the Lake Ferry Road turn-off. It is the only lime quarry south of Carterton. They now have a skid steer (bobcat) loader which is the ideal machine for cleaning out farmers stockyards and wool sheds, dairy raceways, grading driveways or building horse arenas. Robert grew up at Tinui and has worked in the agricultural industry ever since leaving Wairarapa College, from milking cows to driving tractors.

SEAN AT SOUTH ISLAND AGRICULTURAL FIELD DAYS 2021.
Merge sheep like a zip with the Flow Control Gate Sean Blenkin keeps coming up with simple but effective ways to help sheep farmers.
Stock Ezy is a family-owned business based in Masterton.
His latest product is the “Flow Control Gate.”
Sean has been a shearer, as well as working on farms in the Wairarapa, and for a stock handling company in Australia.
Until now, bottlenecking at the back end of races has always been a problem for farmers who are draughting sheep.
career in Wairarapa, Western Australia and the American Midwest.
Sean’s solution is installing a flow control gate at the back of the race.
He has maintained a passion for the industry and is now working with local farmers and shearing contractors to improve, perfect and develop new products.
Because of this background, Robert understands the needs of his rural clients.
The gate swings left and right, letting sheep through on one side of the gate while blocking sheep on the other side, and vice versa.
The designs come from years of watching the behaviour of farmers and animals, and a good dose of common sense. They include the:
The end result is consistent stock flow, with no bottlenecks, saving time and manpower.

Ravensdown Aerowork
AEROWORK CRESCO SPREADING FERTILISER.
From left, Jason, Lou and David Jason Keen, David Shaw and Lou Davies lead the +MORE team in the Wairarapa which now has two offices - one in Martinborough and a newly opened office in Masterton. David and Lou are our farming experts in the area, and it is more than just an interest - it’s a part of their lives. David grew up on a sheep & beef farm east of Martinborough, moving back to the Wairarapa 20 years ago, and now still working two days a week on the family farm. Originally from Wellington, Lou met and married Wilba Davies ten years ago, the sixth generation of a dairy farming family in the South Wairarapa.
“If you want to grow your business, you have to be forward thinking,” notes David. “It is easy to keep on farming and not have a big plan. But you lose sight of where you are going.” “We don’t just see our clients once a year when their tax returns are signed off,” says Lou. “It is more forward thinking about how the client can improve their business.” Being farmers, Lou and David speak the same language as their farming clients and understand their pressure points. It’s a relationship based on trust and shared farming knowledge, says Lou.
+MORE offer a range of advisory services to their agri clients. From business planning, quarterly coaching, cashflow forecasting, through to structuring, succession planning and more.
David likens the relationship between +MORE and their clients to that of a sports team.
They cover all the accounting necessities too – that is their baseline of high performance.
“We are very much a team around our rural clients and their businesses,” adds Lou.
David and Lou together use their agri expertise to deliver results to their Wairarapa clients.

Book your spring topdressing now Heading into spring is always a busy time of year for farmers. Juggling the livestock demands of lambing and calving; working smart to match feed demand and supply not to mention keeping a close eye on the weather, are all just part of the day-to-day on-farm. Not surprisingly, it’s a busy time of year for aerial topdressing, and weather variability is something that Ravensdown Aerowork also pay very close attention to. This is because a change in the weather can have a direct impact on our ability to deliver the much sought-after aerial topdressing services for our farming customers. And while farmers and Aerowork alike can’t control the weather, there are a few ways in which we can work together to take some of the uncertainties out of your aerial fertiliser application: Be the ‘early bird’ Book your aerial application as soon as you can to ensure that you get your fertiliser on when you need it. Spring is a high demand time for aerial applications, so get ahead of the queue rather than waiting in line. Mark Gerritsen, your local pilot is keen to book in dates that work for you and your farming operation. Is your airstrip ‘ship-shape?’ Check that your airstrip facilities are in good condition well ahead of your booking. The better your airstrip facilities, the less you will be affected by the weather, and other potential issues like transport, product availability and storage.
Ask about our new IntelliSpread Plus prescription application Aerowork is driving innovation in aerial spreading. Using our advanced automated GPS guided application system, IntelliSpread Plus works at unparalleled speed to put fertiliser where you want it on your farm and avoid unproductive and environmentally sensitive areas. The accuracy of this new technological development is unparalleled in the market and unique to Ravensdown Aerowork. Your local Ravensdown Agri Manager or Aerowork pilot can help to organise a prescription map produced for your property. Utilise variable rate application Using the same IntelliSpread technology and prescription map ability Aerowork can also apply fertiliser at different rates over your farm to improve fertiliser efficiency even further. Request proof of placement Once the job is done, an accurate proof of placement map is available to give you provable peace of mind that the fertiliser was applied where you wanted it, and in the quantities that you needed it. For instance, it has just taken possession of a Krone BiG M 450 self-propelled mower. With a ten-metre mowing span, the BiG M can manage both flat and hilly land and the most difficult conditions. The BiG M has improved crop conditioning over previous generation of machines, shortening the time before crops are ready for harvest. This gives the machine an obvious advantage for both the business and its clients, saving

A good part of Arron’s time is spent liaising with farmers or their stock managers, in order to get a good understanding of what a job will entail.

BRUCE LOGAN IS ENJOYING SPENDING MORE TIME WITH HIS FAMILY AFTER HIS RETIREMENT IN JUNE FROM GIBSON SHEAT LAWYERS IN MASTERTON.
The changing of the seasons at Gibson Sheat Masterton He’s been a familiar face around Masterton for a few years now, and a familiar and trusted voice to generations of Wairarapa families.
“There are some really good people here at Gibson Sheat and I know that the people I have spent a lot of my life serving are in good hands with Julie, Aimee and the team.
When Bruce Logan finally decided to retire at the end of June 2021, many of his clients and Gibson Sheat colleagues disbelieved him. He’d been trying to retire for at least 18 months.
“Although I’ll miss the camaraderie in the office, I’m looking forward to more flexibility around when to go surfing, swimming, skiing or mountain biking, to pursuing my interest in gardening, and spending more time with my family.
Growing up on a Wairarapa farm, the law as a career featured strongly on both sides of his family – so it’s not surprising he developed an interest in rural law. With a career spanning nearly five decades in his own backyard, he fondly recollects the variety of work that he feels privileged to have been part of. “I always tried to appreciate that often a discussion with a client was about something life-changing for them so they deserved my best. In this regard, helping farming families achieve their farm succession goals has been particularly satisfying. “I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to work with and for so many genuine and loyal clients. That will stand out to me as a highlight of my time practising law in Masterton.” Bruce’s interest in his clients and desire to help are things that he holds as key to his success in a tight-knit community – and are part of his legacy of wisdom for the team at Gibson Sheat.
“But the personal changes arising from my retirement as a lawyer pale into insignificance alongside the changes currently being faced by members of the farming community, who are being required to make more changes than any other New Zealanders as a result of climate change. “Across the board we need to support both the young and the older members of the farming community as they come to terms with the changing future. “They deserve our understanding and support and I know the Gibson Sheat team will be there for them every step of the way.” Happy retirement Bruce – from Julie, Aimee the team at Gibson Sheat Lawyers Masterton. He has a good relationship with many of the topdressing pilots, so can ensure on-farm airfield fertiliser bins are filled when required, with minimal waiting around or disruption for the pilot. Three Kings Contracting has a 14 ton excavator with tilt and rock buckets, thumb, ripper and blade which can be used for all types of excavating work. Stu specialises in digging or cleaning drains, building and clearing tracks and fence lines, culverts, and building and cleaning dams. Also site excavation works, building and maintaining driveways.

Because of its range of accessories, the excavator can be used for all types of work including pulling up stumps, and breaking rocks. Are your varicose veins a pain in the leg? Varicose veins are a common problem among farmers and other rural workers who are on their feet all day. They can be very painful and if not treated can lead to serious health problems. However, there is a non-invasive surgery that can easily remove them, and which is often covered by health insurance. The Vein and Skin Clinic in Wellington has been at the forefront of the non-surgical treatment of varicose veins for almost two decades. The clinic’s leading phlebologist, Dr Henryk Poczwa, first introduced the revolutionary Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) treatment of varicose veins into New Zealand in 2002. This procedure has now taken over from the traditional “surgical stripping” of the vein because of its high success rate and low risk. Varicose veins usually arise from the inability of blood to flow back towards the heart. The veins most commonly affected are those in the legs because standing and walking upright increases the pressure in the veins of the lower body. Painful symptoms may include aching, stinging, burning, throbbing, muscle cramp and swelling. As the condition worsens a skin rash or
eczema can develop, and small red and blue veins appear on the feet and ankles. The lower leg can become pigmented and scarred, and if left untreated the varicose veins can predispose to leg ulcers and deep vein clots. Treatment using EVLA is needed so that more efficient blood flow can be re-routed back to the heart via healthy, normal veins. The clinic treats superficial spider veins with sclerotherapy injections and also has IPL and laser technology to target facial veins. It is a relatively pain free treatment where you walk in and walk out, and can usually go back to work the next day. In many cases, the treatment is covered by health insurance. The Vein and Skin Clinic is an affiliated provider of Southern Cross and accepts most other health insurers. Located at 38 Roxburgh Street, Mt Victoria in Wellington, the Clinic has its own parking and is easy to access by vehicle or train from Wairarapa. If you have concerns with your veins, whether big or small, book in for a consultation with one of the Clinic’s experienced Vein Specialists. Turton Farm Supplies
CATHERINE, HUGO AND GRANT (HUGO’S JERSEY IS HOME SPUN AND KNITTED FROM THE FARM BY GREAT-NANA.
THE TURTON’S TEAM FROM LEFT: JAMIE-LEE, MARK AND GAVIN.
Helping rural businesses get an edge in the market
Introducing the new team at Turton Farm Supplies
One of Grant Jackson’s childhood memories is steering the truck while his grandfather fed out hay on the family’s South Canterbury sheep farm.
Customers have never been just a number at Turton Farm Supplies, and that’s the way the three new staff at the Norfolk Road store plan to keep things.
extending the range of equestrian feed and supplement products available, adding Vetpro, Future Feeds and exclusively supplying Harvest Grains.
Mark Matchett came on-board as Masterton Branch Manager last November and has since been joined by customer service reps JamieLee Meyrick and Gavin Lister.
An equestrian herself, Jamie-Lee breeds horses on her lifestyle property as well as farming sheep, cattle and goats.
Growing up on the farm, Grant did “what every farming kid does - helping put up fences, helping in the shearing shed, shifting stock and driving the tractor.” Grant completed his Honours degree in Accounting at Otago University and worked for Dunedin accounting firm Taylor McLaughlin for four years. He then moved to Tauranga to work for Zeal Systems, which uses accounting software to help businesses manage their entire operations. “I would work with my clients to tailor their accounting system so they could use technology to improve their processes, work more efficiently, and give them an edge in the market.” Zeal Systems sent Grant to Wellington to set up a branch in the capital. One weekend Grant and wife Catherine drove over to Wairarapa and decided they would like to live here. The couple established a Montessori preschool at Solway where Catherine teaches, while Grant continued to commute to Wellington.
came up at Sellar & Sellar last November, it was the perfect opportunity for Grant to continue life, and to work in Masterton. One of the enjoyable features of the role is the variety of rural clients, says Grant. “It is not just sheep, beef and dairy. There are cricket farmers, quail farmers, cropping, mushrooms, organics, olives - there is so much going on.” Grant notes that there are a lot of small businesses with innovative new ideas starting up in Wairarapa. “I think during Covid a lot of people took time off to think about what they really want to do, and have gone out on their own.” There is a lot of change going on in the markets, Grant points out. “Part of my job is to gather information so my clients can make the right decision at the right time.” Grant is a self-confessed techie. He taught himself programming while at university and builds his own high-performance computers. Outside work Grant and Catherine are raising their five-year-old son Hugo and Grant has established Wairarapa’s first academy for the Filipino martial art of Eskrima.
They have brought with them the personal service that has always been a hallmark of the family-run business. Turton Farm Supplies was established more than 40 years ago by Dick Turton, after he became frustrated with not being able to find quality products for his fencing business, first opening a store in Dannevirke, later followed by Waipukurau and Masterton. Fencing continues to be the backbone of the business, including sheep and beef, dairy, deer and equestrian. Alongside is a large stock of culvert pipes and drainage available for farming and forestry use. Turton’s also construct custom-designed pole sheds, utility and hay sheds, mini wool sheds, stables, chook houses, calf rearing pens, dog kennels and runs. Combined with a solid range of general farm supplies from dog and chicken food to farm hardware and tools, milk powder and complete calf rearing supplies, water troughs and tanks, Turton’s has most things needed on your trip to town. Jamie-Lee, who primarily works inside the store, has been responsible for hugely

Gavin, who works mainly in the yard dealing with the large orders from farmers and contractors, has worked in a variety of Wairarapa rural businesses including the local honey industry, timber and meat processing. Always busy, he makes time for a yarn or a laugh. Mark, who takes care of the large quotes, has also been involved in the agriculture sector, starting out on a dairy farm in South Wairarapa. He has since worked in both farm supply and timber industries, most recently running the yard/dispatch for a local timber merchant. At Turton’s we aim to only sell product that we know the farmers and contractors will be happy with, says Mark. “We have a pretty comprehensive range at competitive prices. I have worked hard to get the right people on the front line, to make sure our customers are treated like real people, not just a number lost in the system. Some of them often settle in for a coffee and a chat.” “Turtons is a family business that can’t do enough for its customers. It has a personal touch that is followed through with quality product.”

Supporting farmers for over 40 years
Back in the late 1970s when Wairarapa farmers, Ian and Isabel Campbell were thinking about how to create a better system for farmers to manage their finances, most computers were huge machines that took up a whole room. Owning a personal computer, as the Campbells did, was un-heard of. This year, the company that the Campbells founded, now called Farm Focus, is celebrating 40 years in business. Current CEO, Brian Eccles, has been involved with the company from the early days, and says that it’s hard to comprehend just how visionary Ian’s thinking was. “Ian was very focused on what he wanted to achieve as a farmer, and how technology could work for him. I have no idea where he got his computer from!” says Brian. At that time, record-keeping was very much about looking back, using accounting methodology. The company founders wanted to be able to look ahead, to plan for the next season. Brian says that this forward-looking, farmer-led approach is just as important as ever. “This philosophy hasn’t changed. We are an independent, farmer-led company, and our focus continues to be on enabling farmers to test scenarios, forecast and plan. Planning gets you to a good place,” he says. Given this approach, Brian says that one of the company’s biggest assets is its farming heritage and large customer base.“We’ve been out and about doing a series of Roadshows around the country recently. At each venue I asked our customers how long they had been with us. For many, it is over 30 years. This lengthy history with our customers gives us a real advantage. It sets us up to understand the practicalities of farming. We can tap into what’s happening in the rural community. ”While the company’s philosophy and objectives haven’t changed, the way software is delivered certainly has.” Early computer programmes needed to be optimised for efficient data entry. “When we started out, your computer was an island. Everything you put into it came from your fingertips. These days, software programmes are part of a wider data ecosystem. Our latest application, Farm Focus, is cloud-based, meaning that it can exchange information directly with other cloud-based applications, once authentication has taken place. For example, once you have entered your Inland Revenue credentials in Farm Focus, you can file your GST returns from within the application directly to the IRD,” Brian explains. Because data input is automated, information arrives ready to be consumed. Rather than spending their time gathering data, customers are working with the outputs of that data, really bringing to life the company’s vision of informed farmers making confident planning decisions. Not all other technology companies are cloud-based yet, but most are heading in that direction. Brian says that building Farm Focus as a cloud-based application has set it up to be ready for the future. “We know that our younger customers want a product they can rely on for the next 30 years or more. Farm Focus is a good horse to back!” he says.

repair machine, able to fix dents, cracks and flat spots on steel or aluminium wheels.
Routine maintenance and mechanical breakdowns can be expensive, time consuming and hard to schedule for.
Monthly Payment Plan Lamberts’ Monthly Payment Plan lets the client make regular monthly payments, based on previous years’ typical annual repair and maintenance costs, with the price tailored to what the client feels comfortable paying.
Lamberts Engineering has a Mobile Engineering Workshop to help fit in with clients’ quiet times so maintenance can be planned for and breakdowns fixed when they occur, saving downtime. The mobile workshop is managed by Tom Scott, a qualified engineer, hydraulic and diesel mechanic and auto electrician. Tom was trained by Lamberts co-owner John Brogden and has returned from nine years working in rural Western Australia. Lamberts can fix or service farm machinery, trucks, utes, tractors and all agricultural equipment. John Brogden, after 30 years working in agriculture, has seen pretty much everything. Working on milking sheds, hydraulic systems, electrics & irrigation equipment is not a problem. From broken driveshafts, gearboxes and hydraulic failures, all can be sorted. If he can’t fix the problem on site, Tom will bring it back to the Masterton workshop for repair. When completed, he will return to make sure it works on site as it should.
The plan price includes labour and parts cost and there is no callout fee within normal trading hours. After hours will incur a nominal charge. Clients on the plan receive priority service with no travel costs as it is factored into the labour charge. The plan is available to anyone - agricultural contractors, forestry businesses, farmers, apiarists, and lifestyle property owners.

A tyre for every farm vehicle Joe’s Tyres specialises in supplying tyres for farmers and agricultural contractors. Whatever the type of tractor, farm implement or on-farm truck, Joe’s Tyres can provide a tyre for it, says owner Colin Richardson. “We have a very good range of tyres, with Petlas, Starmax and Cultor for farmers’ tractors, and Mitas, Trelleborg, Vredestein and BKT for agricultural contractors.” Due to Covid, there have been delays in the time it takes to get tyres into the country, Colin notes. “We may not be able to get your first choice of brands, but we will be able to find a tyre that will be equally suitable.” Joe’s Tyres provides an on-farm service to fix punctures and replace tyres on-site. Around 85 per cent of the Masterton business’ work is commercial, and often in the field. Located on the corner of Villa and Wrigley streets, Joe’s Tyres focuses on quality tyres like Kumho, Goodride, Goodyear Hankook and many others for your car, ute and SUV, and on quality service. The importance of having quality tyres on the road, and in the paddock, can’t be overstated, Colin says, “especially in the depth of winter when conditions are challenging.” Joe’s Tyres is a local family business, owned by Colin and wife Milli who does a lot of the administration. There are a total of six staff including Commercial Fleet Manager Hayden Bennett.

Stihl Shop Masterton
JEREMY SHARP.
Outstanding service recognised with top New Zealand award Keeping cool in Wairarapa The O’Brien family has been helping Wairarapa both cool down and stay warm for over four decades – and are showing no signs of slowing down. In 1974, Bernie O’Brien began his refrigeration and air-conditioning business in Masterton and in 1980, his son Lyn purchased the business with wife, Colleen. These days, both their son and daughter work within the business. They have a great team, all with an important role to play. Ash O’Brien enthuses about the company’s greatest asset being their team who have a wealth of experience, explaining that they have been able to create a long and stable workforce mainly by training their own. B.W. O’Brien is a specialised refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump business, which is able to find a solution for any area whether it be the home, the office, the farm or the café. When asked, the O’Briens will say, the refrigeration industry never sleeps, you can’t predict a break down and when a break down occurs, a repair is required urgently. They have a specialised team ready and waiting to assist.
Refrigeration B.W. O’Brien works with its clients to design, install, service and maintain all commercial and farm refrigeration.

This commitment to service was recognised in March when the shop was named Stihl Outstanding Retailer of the Year 2020 for all of New Zealand, and was awarded the Stihl Outstanding Sales Achievement Award for the Central Region of New Zealand 2020. On top of that, the shop was named a Stiga Top Ten Dealer of the Year 2020. Owner Jeremy Sharp says winning Stihl New Zealand’s premier award came as a real shock. “This award would not have been possible without the amazing staff and loyal customers we have.” Stihl Shop Masterton has all the tools and
services you need for your home and land, backed up with great service. The team is incredibly knowledgeable about the products and services they offer, says Jeremy. “You can always expect great advice from the friendly team who are more than happy to help you find the perfect tool for the job and teach you how to use it.” At this time of year, chainsaws have a lot of use and Stihl Shop Masterton has a complete range of these, stocking every Stihl model available, including all Stihl’s electric models which are becoming increasingly popular. You will also find everything else you need for the great outdoors, from hedge trimmers and leaf blowers to lawn mowers, with a big demand for the shop’s ride-ons. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for great deals and fun competitions.

Gawith Burridge
your Book now to have d by septic tank cleane
ADAM PARKER AND DEBBIE VAN ZYL – PARTNERS.
The legal answers you need, when you need them Buying new land, employment contracts, setting up trusts, and keeping the farm in the family: in rural life, there are a few legal hurdles to contend with.
“Farmers appreciate that we can help them navigate all the legal jargon and regulations, and get to know how their business works – so we can give them the best quality advice.
That’s where Gawith Burridge comes in – experienced lawyers and trusted, highly knowledgeable partners of the Wairarapa farming community.
“This brings them peace of mind, and relieves some of the stress.”
Gawith Burridge works alongside the rural sector, advising on all facets of farming transactions: from conveyancing (sale and purchase), to employment agreements, to resource management issues, to succession planning.
One of the most common requests the firm receives is assistance with succession planning – passing farm ownership to the next generation. Debbie says this is often a complex process, with many steps involved.
DR Septic
Steve Cleworth (left) Ross Sewell and Ed Oomen with two of the DR Septic trucks
Don’t wait until the last moment to get your septic tank emptied, is the warning from Ross Sewell of DR Septic Environmental Services.
In April DR Septic took over the septic tank services of GT Environmental Services.
Based in Masterton and serving all of the Wairarapa, DR Septic are the people to call if you need your septic tank or commercial grease trap cleaned. The current waiting time to get a septic tank emptied is five to seven working days, although DR Septic endeavours to complete urgent jobs within 48 hours. People often contact Ross when their septic tank has gotten so full that the pipes leading to it are blocked and are disappointed to find they have to wait days.
The partners of Gawith Burridge are Debbie van Zyl, Adam Parker, Michelle Williams and Kylie Moore. Debbie and Adam are well experienced in farm conveyancing. In a calendar year they have facilitated and settled over 100 million dollars of farm transactions.
“We’re there to help them come up with the best possible outcome for everyone involved – and help new generations succeed in farming.”
Delays beyond this can lead to the system not working well, and possibly expensive repairs.
Gawith Burridge has not only built strong relationships with farmers, but also works closely with banks, accountants, real estate firms and councils.
If you have poor drainage in your sink, bath or shower, then it is probably well past time for your septic tank to be emptied.
“We’re the only legal firm in Wairarapa that doesn’t have ties with any other centre – so we can be solely focused on our clients here,” Adam says.
DR Septic has 30 years’ combined experience in farming, water and sewage waste management.
“Farming is a demanding and stressful industry – and it comes with a complex legal environment, which is ever-changing,” Adam says.
“Steve Cleworth and his truck will continue to visit them, so they won’t notice any difference at all.”
“Customers of GT Environmental Services’ septic tank cleaning service, which has been taken over by DR Septic, will continue to have driver Steve Cleworth and his truck visit them.”
“It can be difficult in the current economic environment, especially with the value of farms constantly changing. And it’s hard when a farmer has several children, and wants to divide the asset in the fairest way.
Gawith Burridge prides itself on its excellent relationships with rural clients, and providing the legal answers farmers need, when they need them.
Ross says former customers of GT Environmental Services will continue to enjoy the same service as before.
Tanks need to be emptied every three to five years. If more time has elapsed, then your tank is definitely in need of emptying.
Another development has been the purchase of a hydro blaster which can crawl along pipes, cleaning as it goes. DR Septic also has CCTV it can send along the pipe to see what the problem is such as tree roots or collapsed pipes.
This means DR Septic can now offer a complete cleaning package for septic tanks and the pipe leading to them. Ross also encourages commercial kitchens to have their grease trips cleaned regularly. There is a lot of demand at present, with kitchens needing to renew their commercial license, he says. DR Septic also hire out portaloos short term or long term. The business has three trucks and drivers - Ross, Steve and Ed Oomen, while Ross’ wife Narina is in charge of accounts.

Poto College House
GV Electrical & Pumping Ltd
2021 YEAR 9 BOARDERS OUTSIDE POTO COLLEGE HOUSE.
Preparing students for life after college Poto College House offers all the best qualities of home for the Wairarapa College students who reside there. Located within the grounds of Wairarapa College, Poto College House is the only co-educational boarding establishment on the East Coast, with around 60 per cent of its children coming from rural families. Stacey Grant is in his second year as manager of the hostel. He was previously Development Officer for Wairarapa-Bush Rugby Union and sports co-ordinator for Makoura College. Stacey takes his role seriously, making sure the hostel provides a home-like environment for the students, while encouraging their academic and sporting success. He notes that Poto College House Trust is spending many thousands of dollars on refurbishing the facility, most noticeably with a new ablution block for the boys. The Trust has also invested in new equipment for the gym and is slowly “bringing back to life” the various rooms at the hostel. Poto College House offers casual and full-time boarding with separate accommodation for the boys and girls and shared recreational areas, lounges, and computer rooms. The hostel has its own dining room and chef, with students enjoying breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Students are expected to lead a similar life to when they are living at home, says Stacey, who places a big emphasis on personal responsibility. “They have to clean their rooms, do their dishes, vacuum, get up early to get to school on time. “We are big on time keeping and want to install a good work ethic in the students. “When they leave, we want them to have life skills that can help them in the big wide world.” The hostel has an excellent relationship with Wairarapa College, and its principal Matt White. Stacey gets fortnightly reports on all the students. “If they slip up at school, we are informed and give them extra support around preparation and homework.” Stacey often gets speakers in to talk to the students on subjects that might be affecting them, such as online safety, drink driving, and anxiety. Poto College House provides a whanau environment with everyone supporting each other, he says. “The students make good friendships and lifelong bonds.”

Providing industry leading solutions to make your water go further It would be fair to say that the past year has been a challenging one! The team at GVE, along with the rest of the country, was forced to quicky adapt its normal procedures and work methods to deal with the invisible threat that Covid-19 presented. We also said goodbye to two long-serving staff members and have since taken on four new staff including two new apprentices, Dhylan and James. Many of our farming clients have had water take consent renewals to deal with over this period which GVE has been able to assist with. While much of this work has been a case of providing the detailed maps and calculations needed to go along with the applications, there have also been a few cases where we’ve assisted with the creation of longer term plans to ensure that the farms involved firstly remain operational and compliant for the foreseeable future and secondly, have a clear picture of the future developments required and the associated costs. One solution being explored by several Wairarapa irrigators is private water storage.
While private storage is not viable for every farm, it is an avenue worth investigating as low flow restrictions are increasingly preventing effective irrigation for longer and longer periods. GV Electrical & Pumping Ltd, partnered with Grundfos New Zealand and Cosio Industries, can provide industry leading storage and pumping solutions to allow users to get the most out of their investments. The resulting systems are designed to be as efficient and long lasting as current technology allows and, when coupled with an irrigation system designed specifically for Wairarapa conditions, provide a predictable, reliable, and stress-free asset that allows farmers to spend less time worrying about water, and more time farming. Gordon Mouldey, Managing Director of GV Electrical & Pumping, believes that the Wairarapa’s food producers are well placed to lead New Zealand farming into the future and has positioned GVE to be able to provide industry leading design, products, and service. He encourages anyone looking to improve their irrigation outcomes to contact GVE for an obligation-free consultation.
Irrigation New Zealand and the Government have identified the transformational opportunity that water storage offers to the post-Covid economic recovery, and to irrigators in general.

Peter Jackson - the farmer’s friend when looking for hidden leaks, pipes, cables and more The countryside - it may look natural and unspoiled - but centimetres or metres under the ground may lurk a variety of hazards when any sort of digging is planned. Peter Jackson of Tick2Dig can find anything underground without having to dig, using a wide selection of tools, some of which he has developed himself.

BATTERIES
Rural clients call on Peter for a variety of reasons - erecting fences with a pole-driver is a common one. But also erecting pole sheds or new buildings, searching for underground power faults in dairy sheds, or looking for drainage tiles and leaks in swimming pools. “If you can’t see it, we can deal with it,” says Peter. Peter was an industrial electrician before starting Tick2Dig 12 years ago. Since then he has been employed by councils, construction companies, plumbers, electricians, property managers, and home owners. They have used Tick2Dig to locate everything from water leaks, to underground electrical faults, to concrete reinforcing, and even grave sites.
GENERAL ENGINEERING
Using Tick2Dig saves time and money in locating hidden problems which the relevant tradespeople can then carry out repairs on. It also means you won’t accidently hit
underground utilities etc, causing expensive repairs. “One thing farmers should realise is that telecom cables can be anywhere, and so can 11,000 volt cables and fibre optic cables. Some cables could have been there 50 or 60 years,” says Peter. “Documents can’t be relied on as they are often inaccurate.” The property owner is responsible for any damage to utility cables, even if they employed a tradesperson to carry out the work, Peter warns. Peter has every instrument and devise that is required to find a cable fault and has developed his own equipment for finding leaks. “Some of my tools are the result of very tricky problems where I have had to improvise.” One of Peter’s latest inventions is a portable vacuum excavator or C-VAC which is the only one of its kind in New Zealand. Once the position of a cable has been located, the C-VAC can expose it with a minimum amount of soil disturbance. Nothing is 100 per cent certain when you are looking for things you can’t see, Peter points out. So while the technology is indispensable, experience and lateral thinking is also essential. “It is all about problem solving and thinking outside the square.”

The Dag Man
LOCHIE AND GAVIN FAIR.
The Dag Man’s super sucker If the sheep manure under your woolshed is building up and you would like it removed then The Dag Man can do the job using their suction unit. The Dag Man’s suction unit is an industrial unit they imported and is the only one like it in New Zealand. The unit can cope with the manure and is also capable of sucking up mud, sludge, stones and water. It is a two-man operation based in Masterton with Gavin Fair the main operator. The team can travel to wherever they are needed. Gavin says they crawl under the woolshed with up to 40 metres of suction hoses, needing limited access to get under the woolshed, so at quite a few sheds there is no need to remove parts of the shed. The team park the suction unit close to the woolshed. They are then able to suck the manure and discharge it a distance away from the woolshed. The Dag Man team also have a supersonic air gun that breaks up and removes hard buildup from under the woolsheds. They are also able to use this in the count out pens and in under-cover yards where they also use their dingo.
While under the woolsheds, the team will inspect for rotten piles or anything else that could have an effect on the important farm asset. Gavin will report these findings to the farmer on completion of the suction job. Every time the sheep are in the woolshed manure is going underneath which is increasing the ammonia build-up. By removing the manure it has health and safety benefits for all who use the woolshed including the shearing gang. There are benefits for the sheep as well with the increased air flow. Gavin does free quotes, and for every job done $100 will be donated to the school or club of the client’s choice.
BEFORE
Along with the super sucker operation The Dag Man also has a wool and dag crusher operation. The wool is usually sold to Segard Masurel Direct, a main New Zealand exporter. The Dag Man’s powdered sheep manure brand Kinpack is sold direct from their store at factory price in 10 and 20 kg bags. They also retail in garden centres and Mitre 10 stores around New Zealand. Dyer Conveyor Services is a family-owned business. Jordan runs it with his wife Andrea who does the accounts and administration.
A popular service is the regular inspection of belts to catch any wear and tear before a breakdown happens.
The couple live in Wairarapa where they are raising their young family.

Premier Tyre Services is one of the newer tyre companies in Wairarapa. Based over two workshops at Solway in Masterton, in just over two years, the business is carving out a sound reputation in the region. One workshop is for cars and 4x4s, while the other specialises in truck servicing and other heavy-duty machinery. It also offers mobile on-the-spot repairs for those who cannot make it into the workshops. The team are just a phone call away. Owner Brad O’Connell is an experienced Fleet Serviceman and an expert on tyres having worked in the tyre industry for almost 16 years. For farmers, business owners and motorists alike, who rely on their vehicles and machinery in the far-flung corners of Wairarapa, Premier Tyre Services is a godsend. Brad’s expertise, efficiency and reliable service is highly sought after. A congenial, personable individual, he took the courageous step to set up his own business, a long-held dream. In February 2019, after years of working for tyre firms in Wairarapa, Perth and around Western Australia and in Wellington, Brad decked out his ute with basic repair gear, sought a reliable tyre source, and began offering his repair service around Wairarapa. He was amazed how quickly he attracted regular custom. Hemi Pureau joined him a year on and is a great asset to the company. Hemi had worked in the agricultural sector and knew farm machinery and all its foibles. Hemi manages the car and 4 x 4 service out of the second workshop in the Solway yard and is also the back-up truck serviceman. Hemi’s expertise and loyalty has been
rewarded with him being gifted shares in the company. This move was a deliberate part of wanting family and friends onboard, emphasising a team approach to business. Gabriel Brewster joined Premier Tyre Services at the beginning of 2021. He also comes with tyre experience. Jamie Daley most recently joined the team and will be learning the trade from Brad and Hemi. If the necessary replacement tyre isn’t in stock, they are sourced rapidly. The large trucking workshop has a huge gaping entrance. Trucks can easily enter the space and be immediately worked on. It’s a huge advantage to truckies, roading and farming contractors, facing deadlines and short on time. Premier Tyre Services boasts a state-of-theart Corghi-HD1400 earthmoving machine which lifts huge tyres in its massive jaws, enabling Brad and the team to remove and manoeuvre the heavy tyres with ease. Brad points out it’s the only one of its kind in Wairarapa. Premier Tyre Services Director is Jo O’Connell, Brad’s mother. She, and husband Grant, returned to New Zealand from Perth where they had run businesses and were keen to share their knowledge with Brad, who was living in Upper Hutt. Brad has two children in Wairarapa and wanting to be nearer them he decided to set up business here. Premier Tyre Services has become a family operation where everyone is benefiting. Keeping a keen eye on the administration, Jo travels regularly from Upper Hutt to check out the “boys in the workshops” and to see the grandchildren. She’s well known and appreciated for her home baking treats.

Your friendly country store in the heart of Masterton The past 12 months have been very positive for PGG Wrightson Masterton which has seen a huge increase in casual sales. Store Manager Angela Parkinson says horse feed sales in particular “have skyrocketed”. The shop is now selling around 20 tonne of horse feed a month from its 90 lines of horse feed product. Angela is uncertain as to why off-the-street sales have increased so much but points out that the store makes a big effort to be friendly and helpful. “One thing I hear a lot from our customers is that our service is exceptional,” says Angela. “We provide a lot of one-on-one assistance, helping our customers find what they are looking for.” The Lincoln Road store has a huge range of products for both rural and urban customers. Not surprisingly, many are directed at farmers, from fencing and agricultural chemicals to animal health and irrigation. But there are just as many products for lifestyle and residential customers, such as pet supplies and gardening products.
Animal Health products as its preferred range. For technical help talk to Gavin Harris who specialises in forage cropping and animal health. They also have Technical field reps Geoff Horrobin and Horticulture Rep Spencer Southey who are both a wealth of knowledge. Angela joined the store nearly seven years ago, and has been manager for two years. She lives on a Masterton lifestyle property with her husband where they run a small cattle and sheep block. Angela has been an equestrian all her life. Hanna Whitehead grew up on her family’s sheep and beef farm at Tinui and previously worked as an “on-to-farm” representative for PGG Wrightson in Christchurch. Ashley Greer worked as a shepherd before coming to PGG Wrightson Masterton. Ian Lucas has been a farmer for much of his life, while newest customer service rep Zac Chandler comes from Masterton.

Norfolk Road Nursery

STEVEN, TRACEY AND ONION.
Introducing Steven and Tracey Harlen Steven and Tracey Harlen seem the perfect fit for Norfolk Road Nursery. Located in an attractive rural setting at 131 Norfolk Road, south of Masterton, the nursery has been growing natives for the past 30 years. It uses only locally sourced seeds, and the plants are grown outside so they are adapted to the local environment. Along with the general public, the nursery’s customers include the Department of Conservation, Greater Wellington Regional Council, local councils, and numerous restoration groups. Steven and Tracey took over the business in April and serve customers along with their staff. Ever since he was a little kid, Steven has been interested in trees and nature, developing a particular passion for natives. After serving his apprenticeship at Frank Mason & Son in Feilding and working for Thermal Nurseries in Rotorua, Steven went on to become head gardener at the residence of the British High Commission, before studying at the UK Royal Horticultural Society Gardens in Wisley, and managing landscape projects all over Britain and France. Returning to New Zealand, Steven started the Landscape Garden Company in Wellington. Originally from Waikato, and a
member of Tainui iwi, Tracey is a qualified barrister and solicitor who has been a senior assessor for the Department of Social Welfare, adviser to the United Nations Development Fund for East Timor, and investigator and principal adviser for the Office of the Ombudsman New Zealand. The couple also have a sheep and beef farm at Otahome on Wairarapa’s east coast that includes a native nursery, and have a blended family of five to help across the farm and businesses when things need to get done. When Norfolk Road Nursery came up for sale, it tied in nicely with The Landscape Garden Company and the couple’s passion for native plants, says Steven. This is the time of year when the nursery has its biggest range of plants, and Steven stresses that the sooner people come in, the better. There is a huge demand for native plants in Wairarapa, driven in part by government planting subsidies, he says.
All your rural cartage and lifting needs Our large 10 wheel Hiab truck can pick up, deliver, install and lift loads all over Wairarapa and greater Wellington. It has a lifting capacity of 13,400kg at four metres, 3100kg at 16 metres, and 1180kg at 25 metres. We are often called upon to lift farm buildings, building frames, water tanks and septic tanks. Owner and operator Brad Langford is a highly trained driver. He is licensed and qualified to follow through with any job at hand. We provide a high standard of customer service, and follow all Health & Safety procedures. We can provide you with a free no-obligation quote, and always aim to have the job done on time and on budget.
New customers can start purchasing a few plants this winter, and start to plan in advance for next winter, Tracey suggests. “There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a young couple with kids go away with a trailer-load of native plants for the first time.”
