Whichever way you wish to marry is purely individual, but here in this magazine, we’d like to take you through the journey after committing to your beloved, to planning the wedding, taking a deep breath, and contemplating life as couple. It is a transformational journey like no other. We hope you find this a helpful guide and we wish you a happy future.

WELCOME

The joyous occasion of a wedding is adored by all. No two weddings are ever the same, no two couples are. Weddings are the optimistic occasion where two people commit their lives to each other in front of chosen family and friends. This is achieved either in a personalised ceremony or in a Registry Office. There are few rules these days and your imagination and creativity can run wild with personalised weddings. About anywhere and anything goes if that’s what the couple chose to celebrate their union. People have parachuted out of planes, climbed mountain peaks, and travelled to far-flung exotic places to tie the knot. Others have enjoyed the comfort of marrying in their own homes and gardens

The entire wedding was held at Lansdowne Estate in Masterton’s Gordon Street, owned by Georgia’s grandparents, Margaret and Derek Hagar. Georgia loves the historical nature of the place – the land having first been planted in grapes by the Beetham family in the 1880s. Georgia graduated from UCOL’s School of Nursing in Masterton during all the wedding plans, and she describes the time as a “bit manic”. They kept the event as simple as possible being on one site. A food truck provided the food for the 120 guests and there was no formal sit-down dinner. When the music started, everyone got up to dance and this continued to midnight. A sign of a good Dylanwedding.isadiesel mechanic and was a familiar face at Tranzit Coachlines for 10 years. These days he’s a vehicle inspector at VTNZ in Masterton. Georgia works as a community nurse and her patients are spread throughout Wairarapa and even on to the Kapiti Coast. It’s a busy life and one they are enjoying doing together.

surrounded by familiar vibes. The few rules include that a Marriage Licence needs to be applied for at least three working days before the ceremony; an authority figure or official celebrant must officiate and proclaim the vows made by the two people. A record of the event must be made by signing a marriage register which in turn is lodged with Internal Affairs in New ThereZealand.arethree clear reasons why you cannot marry. That’s if you are under 16 years old; already married or in a civil union, or closely related by birth, marriage, or adoption. This close relationship is clarified in the Marriage Act Regulations1955. aside, it’s most definitely a time to celebrate. Have a read through this insightful magazine and absorb. Good luck with your planning.

Georgia Hagar was still at Wairarapa College when she set eyes on former Makoura College student, Dylan Tomuri. It was love at first sight and seven years on, they married on 9 January 2021. Georgia was named Bride of the Year in 2021 and it completed a wedding that both Georgia and Dylan agree was perfect. “We wouldn’t change a thing.”

Then create a budget and a roadmap around those wishes and stick to it. cannot begin to plan your wedding until you know what you want to spend. There are so many delicious temptations to help you blow your budget but the last thing you want is to have a hefty debt after the event. Popular venues can be booked up for a year ahead, and so selecting where you are going to get married is an important early decision you must make. You can hold a wedding at a park or beach, but just need council consent, and a temporary liquor licence, if there will be alcohol on-site. Again, your imagination is the only limit. You don’t have to pay for a designated wedding venue (trestle tables on the lawn work well) but even if you get married in the openair, you will want somewhere to take your guests for the wedding festivities. It can be an enormous undertaking to do the catering yourself, and many do, but there is something special about being able to sit back and be waited on by the Wairarapaprofessionals.hasareputation for offering a huge array of wedding

venues from rustic barns to elegant mansions and estates which can accommodate, as well as feed your guests. Major things to consider is, do you have to tidy up next day, is there plenty of cover from inclement weather, and do your guests have easy access both with vehicles and Takeaccommodation?timetodoyourhomework. Visit all those which appeal to you and see if there is a real intimacy which gives meaning for you as a couple. Ensure when comparing venues that the costs match up. Also, matching up your style of wedding with the venue is important. There’s no good choosing a barefoot wedding if you are wanting the classic elegance of olde-worlde charm. Nor would champagne silk and tiaras look right in a haystrewn barn. MEMORIES ARE GOLDSTREAMING&PHOTOS

Wedding photography is a specialist skill, and most couples employ a photographer, videographer, and even an IT person to livestream the event.

Drones are increasingly being used too, so when choosing a photographer, this may be worth a consideration checking their range of competencies. Talk to friends who have used

The professionals are the ones who take the couple and the wedding party off into stunning landscapes, setting the wedding scene, and where the official photos are taken. Factor this into your planning of the day – anything up to two hours may be needed. You won’t be sorry for the Makeeffort.sure you have the photographer remain to capture the reception and the dance floor antics They can be the essence of the wedding. There are several award-winning photographers residing and working in Wairarapa. Learn who they are, check out their work, and talk with them. photographers, to help choose the right fit for you.

So, you have chosen that special place to get married and host your guests? If it’s a place which needs decorating and furnishings with table and chairs, you will need to consider hiring the items. This is another specialist service which can be invaluable to couples arranging their wedding. Event hire companies know the type of items you will need and can also help with colour co-ordination and style. Their experience in event management is highly valued among the wedding Dependingfraternity.onyour budget, teams will come in and set it all up for you, or you can do some yourself. Every bit of help at this stage is great! Bland places can come alive with colour, lights, and imagination. There’s nothing like a bit of whimsy to put smiles on people’s faces. What better opportunity than to create a fantasy affair in which to party?

HIREAGE

There are many areas where you can save money, but you will regret going cheap on a photographic record. It’s the memento you have for the rest of your life and for family records.

Family and friends will often offer to take the photos. This is great and don’t turn them down to ensure everything is recorded as the candid photos can be gold, but there is nothing to surpass a professional’s eye and the beautiful images they produce.

Most caterers will quote you a ‘per head’ cost and depending on this amount, will dictate what they can o er for the price. Many people come away from a wedding raving about the wonderful food, and yes, it is a component of the day, but remember there are also many other memorable parts. Quality food, presented well, in three courses, is a simple way to present the wedding breakfast. Don’t forget there’s wedding cake also – and always have tea and co ee on hand. Honouring your guests by feeding them well is a tradition of many cultures. People can have food preferences and allergies, so ensure your caterer is aware of these. Ensuring these people are considered makes a good impression. Again, considering the budget, you can go from a total cater and wait sta , to friends and family wanting to be involved in o ering food. Remember they are your guests though and they should be able to enjoy the day without lots of work. A popular way to keep costs down is by having a spit roast. Usually menfolk like this endeavour. Seek then out and source the animal well in advance.

While photos are being taken and while your guests are mingling after the ceremony consider social platters. These can be nuts, dried fruits, cheeses and crackers. Always a favourite and easy to prepare before the event.

Once you have things sorted –con rmed where and when the wedding will take place, send out the invites. These should name the couple getting married, where it will be held, time and even a map of how to get there. RSVPs are important –requiring them about a month before the event.

SAVE THE DATE CARDS

In times past, the parents of the those getting married were mentioned as those doing the inviting. In some cases, people may still prefer to do this. It adds a touch of two families coming together.

There is a myriad of ‘Save the Date’ design styles you can choose from. Just ensure you have both the names of those to be married – protocol says to list the bride’s name rst and in same-sex couples, consider alphabetising. Ensure you give a contact address, phone, and email.

This type of of-term planning means it is not only courteous to your guests but also in working out your numbers.

Etiquette says it’s polite to let people know the date of your wedding six to nine months out from the event. Even a year, if it’s to be held where lots of travelling is involved, is a good idea, and if it’s to be somewhere where guests may have to save up to attend – notice two to three years out, is not a silly idea.

It sounds brutal, but having a Group A and a Group B, is a sound way to ensure everyone is considered –Group A being the rst preference.

A cut-o date, way back from the event means you will know exactly the number to cater for in all aspects of the planning.

It is important that those at the wedding know who the celebrant is, should any questions need to be asked prior to proceedings

Only people appointed by the Registrar-General as Marriage and/ or Civil Union Celebrants, and whose name appears in the List of Celebrants in the NZ Gazette, have authority to solemnise marriages and/or civil unions in New Zealand

There has been a recent trend for a ‘friend’ of the couple to conduct the wedding, with an o cial celebrant just signing o on the legal requirements. This is not acceptable

15WAIRARAPA WEDDINGS 2022

Things you need to know:

The marriage licence is a document con rming that it is legal for the marriage between the two parties to go ahead. It does not need to be signed

Celebrants work with couples to provide a ceremony that meets their needs, and guide those who wish to design and write their own. They are the quiet co-ordinating presence which makes the ceremony ow beautifully. The celebrant is responsible for ensuring all legal requirements are met.

CELEBRANT CELEBRANTS - THE GUIDING LIGHT

Two copies of ‘Particulars of Marriage’ or ‘Particulars of Civil Union’ are signed in front of two witnesses and the celebrant at the ceremony. A copy of this is sent to the Registrar of Births Deaths and Marriages within 10 days of the ceremony. It is from this that a Marriage Certi cate can be issued Not everyone requests a Marriage Certi cate but remember you will need it for name changing on important documents like your passport or bank accounts

For men with beards, they can look dramatic when professionally trimmed, as will their hair. Everyone wants to look gorgeous on their wedding day. Makeup trends come and go and professional makeup artists are a great help here.

So, here’s a few hints from local professionals:

Seeking help from professionals with your hair and makeup (both men and women) is a good move.

Whether it’s curls framing your face, long hair falling healthily over your shoulders, or a neat short style, augmented with a petite tiara, your hair needs to be styled to fit with the dress, veil, hat, or hair piece that you have chosen.

Derma blading is advised for anyone with fine facial hair as it removes the peach fuzz and gives a flawless finish to makeup Remove skin blemishes, milia, or freckles six weeks before Have a brightening manicure that polishes the hands and choose an elegant natural nail polish on short, manicured nails forget your toes, especially if wearing sandals or opentoed shoes. YOUR SKIN  Wedding photos last forever so it’s important the bride looks radiant, and natural, despite often having spent hours with a makeup artist gaining that impression!  Having your sk in in good condition is important and this preparation should begin months before a wedding with a good diet and using decent skin products. Consult with a beautician  Don’t have a facial the day before the wedding in case of skin flareups 

Many menswear stores offer a great service, whereby they will dress the groom and his groomsmen for an agreed price, offering advice and styles. It can take the weight off another task and brings great coordination to this part of the wedding.

It’s best that the groom and his party (just like the bride and bridesmaids) are distinguishable, clothing-wise, from the rest of the guests. What the groom and groomsmen all wear can be varied and hopefully in theme with the bridal party, but really anything Dependinggoes.on the weather, venue, and wedding style, attire can be as varied as the classic suits, tuxedoes, tailcoats or morning dress, right through to sandals, open neck shirt and shorts. If you want to have some fun, chose a special fabric like velvet for the jackets, or wool for the trousers. Add colour with ties or pocket handkerchiefs.

General etiquette is that bridesmaids and groomsmen pay for their own outfits but often couples decide to make the outfits a gift to the attendants. A nice gesture, if you can afford it within the budget. THE GROOM & HIS MEN

Roses can be expensive and as owers are estimated to take about 10 per cent of a total wedding budget, it’s best to choose wisely. Selecting inseason blooms at the time of your wedding, is sensible. There is a trend towards natural surroundings too, and not only garden owers but leaves, twigs, moss, bracken and ponga can make wonderful adornments. Wedding bowers come in all shapes from willow sticks (forever entwined) to bamboo (longevity, strength, and grace) and fernery.

Fresh owers at a wedding are simply divine, especially when they have a fragrance like sweet pea or gardenia.

Queen of them all is the red rose - the symbol of love and beauty. Roses gure in myths and fairy tales and so at weddings they so look the part.

FLOWERS THE SYMBOL OF LOVE & HOPE

‘If music be the food of love, play on.’ This is one of the most famous opening sentences in English literature, and one of Shakespeare’s most quoted lines. He opens his great comic play, Twelfth Night, with it. Love songs come in all forms from happy to tragic and they all play an important part in setting a wedding’s tone. Wagner’s Bridal Chorus, often known as ‘Here Comes the Bride,’ has been the classical piece of music used THROUGH THE EVENT

MUSIC MUSIC

by brides for generations. Played on an organ, it conjures up a beautiful ambience and marks the procession of the bride. It’s beautifully traditional but there are many other pieces of music, dear to couple’s hearts. Make sure the music you chose is meaningful to you both. When it comes to splashing out for music for dancing after the reception, a live band is great. However, again budget comes into play, and a DJ with a great music repertoire can also be equally successful in getting a room moving. Then there’s streaming services, such as Spotify. It can be allied to a great set of speakers and a voilà, a personalised music session for throughout the event.

A great Master of Ceremonies ties a wedding together and keeps the flow of the proceedings on track. That person can be anyone from a capable friend to a professional public speaker but preferably someone who knows the couple being married. It all depends too on how formal you want your wedding to be, but even at a casual level, having someone who keeps an independent eye on everything is important.

NEVER be late for a wedding if you are a guest. It may be okay for the bride to be late, but a general rule is for guests to arrive around 30 minutes before the wedding start time. This allows for people to mingle and be well seated by the time the bridal party does arrive. Part of your guests arriving on time may have to do with where they are accommodated.

When choosing a wedding venue, the amount and range of nearby accommodation is worth considering seriously. While we would all like to set up our guests in First Class hotels, guests’ budgets need to be considered. Make sure there is a range of places at various levels available. A popular way for people to stay near the wedding venue is by groups booking houses together. This proves to be a cost-effective way to approach accommodation and allows people to spend time together outside the wedding day. Investigate what is available and provide a list for guests. The origin of wedding rings is a fascinating one. The tradition of exchanging rings dates back 3000 years, while the first diamond wedding ring was recorded in the will of a widow who died in 1417. In its purest sense, an engagement ring and wedding band is circular to fit a finger. It is the symbol of infinity – it has no beginning and no end. It represents eternal love between a couple, as just as the shape, it is never-ending. Rings also symbolise commitment, love, and devotion. In earlier times, engagement rings were diamonds and wedding bands were gold –indicating a man’s promise was “good as Today, gold”.plain gold bands are still popular, and diamonds always loved, but many couples will design unique rings personalised to themselves. A nice gesture is incorporating family members’ rings. Whatever rings you chose, have fun designing or choosing them and on the day of the wedding entrust them to your faithful attendant who will present them at the appropriate time – “with this ring, I thee wed”.

A general rule is one drink per guest per hour is considered about the average consumption. A bottle of wine provides four drinks for one person each hour. A big bottle of beer would be four drinks per hour. Liquor like gin and whisky is harder to assess. Good luck!

DRINKS GIVE OPTIONS FOR WHAT TO DRINK AUGUST & VINE PHOTOGRAPHY

While your guests néed to be fed, and will probably be keen to have a few drinks, you don’t néed to be extravagant.

The main point is don’t let your guests go thirsty. Make sure there is plenty of water available; non-alcoholic punch (always popular), and even sparkling water along with the alcohol you choose. Specialised cocktails and even a drink made up especially for the wedding couple is a nice touch. An open bar at weddings is when the host pays for all the drinks served. Depending on many factors like types of drinks and guest numbers, this bill can vary from $200 - $10,000, so be careful what is offered. Weddings are a time of celebration.

If you want to totally cater for your guests, source bulk deals on beer, wine, and bubbly. There are several outlets in Wairarapa which also offer glass hire when you are buying alcohol along with a refund service for what has not been drunk. Ask around.

A reminder. Traditional key roles to support the wedding couple are the Chief Bridesmaid and the Best Man. If the bride’s best mate is a man, then he could easily become the ‘Man of Honour’ and the same could be said of the groom with a ‘Best Woman’. As mentioned, it’s your wedding, do it as you feel fit. YOUR

The term ‘Bridal Party’ means both the bride and groom’s group of people who are chosen to support the couple to be married. It’s a unique way to thank those dear to you who have played a significant part in your life so Mostfar.people have several friends they would like to be involved here and family members. It can be a nightmare not to upset someone by making them feel left out, so this is a carefully thought-out process to keep everyone happy on the day. Tradition has meant the bride has a group of women to support her and the groom a group of men. However, like anything in today’s wedding planning – your imagination could result in mixed supporters on each side and even a human being replaced with a beloved pet! Your wedding, your rules!

CHOOSING

Small, personalised boxes make special containers to take away as gifts for those who may not have been able to attend the wedding.

It’s a nice idea to save part of the cake (perhaps a layer) and freeze it. When the first anniversary comes around – the couple can wash it down with champagne to mark the event.

If you are interested in doing it to tradition, the couple should feed each other the first slice, then to their parents. The cake is then taken away by wedding attendants to be sliced up and shared around the guests.

Wedding cakes are full of symbolism.

WHY WE HAVE CAKE 31WAIRARAPA WEDDINGS 2022

CAKE

Ancient tradition says cake at a wedding offers good fortune and fertility and brought good luck to anyone who ate it. Creating beautiful wedding cakes has become a specialised art form for cake decorators and they are uniquely beautiful to behold, as well as eat. There’s nothing nicer than experiencing the moments at a wedding when both bride and groom cut their wedding cake together and then share it around their guests.

Having a background in radio announcing, performing arts both acting and music, these invaluable skills give me an edge when o ciating your ceremony. I love having the role as celebrant because it allows me to draw on these to create a ceremony that is bespoke and unique to you. As your celebrant I spend time getting to know you both, I nd out your vision and style. I understand who you are as individuals and what your dreams and aspirations are as a couple. I work with you both to create a personal script that re ects you, your style and your love journey. To me an ideal wedding is allowing you to be uniquely you and to take you through the process of not just being in a relationship, but taking that leap of faith to become partners for life. I am accepting of all walks of life and look forward to listening to your story and being a part of planning your special and memorable day.

DECORATIONS

Here’s a beginning checklist to get yourself thinking: chairs couple chair decorations with table pen table/card box

ENHANCING ON THE WEDDING THEME

 Guestbook

Decorating a venue and the tables for a wedding can be so much fun and here’s the chance to involve friends and family who can participate with their own artistic touch. There néeds to be clear guidance, though, as to the wedding couple’s idea for the theme and ambience.

Formal can mean acres of silk curtains and fairy lights; rustic could bring in the hay bales and coloured bunting.

There are many good companies who will assist with decorating and if the budget allows, they can be a godsend when there is so much to do in getting a wedding looking special. Do your homework on what is available, keep your imagination clear, and decide early on the theme. It can take months to collect just the right props and decorations and can be a joyous task if you give yourself time.

 Wedding

A wedding is such a special event, children will just add that other layer of specialness.

If you do decide to include children, ensure there are activities (games and child-related activities) that will entertain them. Even provide a special place where they can go and play.

First consideration is: will you have children at your wedding? Some couples decide it will be an adult affair but others like the idea of having children running around adding to the festivities.

If you have children from previous relationships, the children could be part of the wedding party and this can be especially memory-making for all concerned. A special gift for them, to mark the occasion, is a nice consideration.

Before you get married, you néed to apply for a marriage licence. Your local courthouse will help you. A licence confirms it’s legal for you to marry. It costs $150 if you use a celebrant, and a registry ceremony costs $240 in total. You néed to arrange your licence at least three working days before you get married. If your wedding does not go ahead, the licence expires after three months. Only one person néeds to complete the application but there is information required about both people wishing to marry. You can apply online or obtain a paper from the courthouse. Two people over 18 years must witness the marriage ceremony and sign the Marriage Register and OnceCertificates.thelicence is signed and returned by an officiant, a marriage certificate is issued.

THE LEGAL BITS

Some couples have already set up home, others are blending two households, while there are others who don’t have anything for their future home and are beginning from scratch. Gift vouchers from homeware stores, have become a popular present. So too, are travel experiences and creature comforts like beauty treatments and massages. Money is always appreciated. If you wish to give a special long-lasting gift, getting something suitably engraved, can mean a lot to the couple. Silver goblets or a set of champagne glasses, personalised with their names, never go out of fashion. Some couples believe in a special cause. Consider this and speak with the couple about donating to a charity or movement. It is always worth having a conversation with the couple to be married, whether they wish to accept gifts or are thinking of donations elsewhere. However it’s done wedding gifts néed to be thought out and considered carefully. And, just a thought to consider is, when you are going to give your wedding gift. Sometimes on the wedding day may not be the most appropriate time. Gifting before or after the wedding is another option and if it is after you can also ensure it’s the right gift for the couple.

Hosting a wedding is a happy encompassingall- affair achieved by many.

The families, bridesmaids, groomsmen, neighbours, friends, and service people all come together to make it a winning event. When it’s all over, it’s good to acknowledge the kind efforts of these people. Large and small, they helped make it happen. In wedding-speak, they are called ‘wedding favours.’
