What is the Alfa Challenge? ) The Alfa Challenge is an Italian's dream with everything Alfa included in the race. The field is majority made up of Veloce but often has some new GTA’s to mix in with the fun.

A Brief History of Wakefield Park The Wakefield Park circuit was built by Paul Samuels and John Carter and was opened officially by John Fahey, the then NSW Premier and member for the Goulburn district in November 1994. It was built with club motor sport firmly in mind and with the control tower and paddock facilities and carports it made some of our existing circuits look a bit out dated. Track days and supersprints were the usual events with race days for cars, motor bikes and go karts also becoming popular at the circuit. At 2.2 kilometres, with an reasonable length straight leading to a section of uphill bends with the loop at the top of the hill and then a downhill run into what became known as the fish hook section and a negatively banked last turn onto the main straight the circuit offered quite a challenge to achieve a quick lap. In 2000 the circuit changed hands for the first time with Rob Hodgkinson and Paul Phillips taking over. Soon after the change over the circuit was re-profiled with changes to the fish hook area and the final turn onto the main straight. Both of these changes improved the flow of the circuit, the fish hook area in particular allowing for a faster run onto the back straight. Under the new ownership the Wakefield Park licensing and permit system was introduced. This gave clubs a cheaper alternative to CAMS for the running of events and members could also purchase a Wakefield licence with which they could compete in events that they may not normally be able to on a level 2 licence. Now the circuit uses the AASA insurance and permit system that which is now being used by a large proportion of motor sport promoters and clubs for events around the country. The Speed off the street days that allowed people to drive their own cars on the circuit under the Wakefield licence system, encouraging speed at the right venue and not on public roads were also introduced and continue today. ) From 2001 to 2008 the circuit held a round of the V8 development series, this for many years being the only stand alone round for those cars. The pit lane garages were added at this time, once again improving the circuit’s facilities. In January 2007 the circuit was bought by the Benalla Auto Club, the owners of the Winton circuit in country Victoria. At the end of 2008 a major re-surfacing of the circuit took place and this again has led to better lap times. 2010 has seen the introduction of a lighting system at all flag points that will warn drivers of incidents on the circuit and be operated from race control. With the complex now managed by Mathew Ronke and ongoing improvements happening the circuit is still a great club sport venue. With a great cafe and complete circuit viewing from the spectator areas enjoy today’s racing. The current lap record for the circuit is held by Ben Chrithon driving an F3 open wheeler and stands at 54.563 seconds, a fairly quick time. Wakefield Park, just another great part of the Goulburn area. Current lap Record Holder Ben Crighton from New Zealand

it is where the driver nominates a lap time and endeavours to maintain that time over a number of flying laps (usually 6) of a racing circuit. Each tenth of a second away from the nominated time scores penalty points. The driver with the least number of points wins, or the driver with the most points i.e. furthest from their nominated lap time comes last! (You see, you get excited and forget what you’re doing).

to buy an expensive ‘rocket’, the family ‘shopping trolley’ can be just as competitive as the latest sports car. A car passing you on the track is not perceived as beating you. This has the effect of competitors not trying to block or ‘dice’ with each other, as in racing or sprinting, and generally much safer competition results. In fact, blocking and dicing is not tolerated and will attract a penalty from the officials of the event.

Therefore, you don’t need

What is Superkarting? Think back to your childhood ... back to your homemade billy-kart, a few pieces of 4x2 which was powered by gravity and a mate or two throw in some wacky steering, some Victa lawn mower wheels and Fred Flintstone brakes. You imagined you were Fangio, Stewart, Senna as you rolled down the driveway. It was heaps of fun eh? Now take the concept to the other extreme ... you’ve got a professionally manufactured Chrome-Moly chassis, sticky racing slicks, 6-speed truesequential shift racing bike engine, four-wheel disc brakes, and wings. Now you have a recipe for the ultimate karting experience! Today’s Superkarts owe their heritage to decades of dedicated research by manufacturers and teams all over the world, pushing chassis, aero, tyre and engine design to the limits in a similar way to how Formula One works ... without the mega-dollar budget.

Because of the awesome speeds these machines are capable of, they are only raced on large road-race circuits – places like Eastern Creek, Phillip Island, Mallala, Silverstone, Laguna Seca, Hockenheim ... Yes, the same tracks all the top race drivers around the world race at. So picture this. You’re sitting in your grid position, amongst 50 other karts, and the Red Light is ON. Bringing the tacho up to 13,000rpm and your heart is beating just as fast as the adrenaline surges through your arteries, and then the lights go ) out ... it’s time to launch this little rocket! You’ve fired off the line like a slingshot, gotten to about 100kph in 3 seconds, and now you give the gear stick a nudge into 2nd gear. The tacho screams its way back to 13,000 and you just keep nudging that gearstick, 3 ... 4 ... 5 ... 6 ... brake hard. NO ... HARDER!! You’ve brought this monster down from 230kph to just 87kph in

2011 MRA Series Round 4

the blink of an eye (but a lot heartbeats) and you about to guide this missile through a hard 2.5G corner. With your neck muscles struggling to keep your helmet attached to your body, you’re back on the throttle as you hurtle out of the corner in 2nd gear, the speed and acceleration building just like a few seconds ago as you grab 3rd, 4th ... Repeat over and over and over again. Some corners are “slow”, you take them at about 90kph, other corners are “fast” and you can attack them flat out, but the sensation is always the same. Woo Hoo! Sound more like the sort of thing you wanted to do as a kid with that billycart? If not, stop reading now. But if you can imagine yourself doing this for the sheer heck of it, because you can, because it’s the cheapest entry into circuit racing, because there are no more excuses.

s interest continues to build in the inaugural All American Muscle Day at Wakefield Park on Saturday December 10th, another intending entrant is Melbourne landscaper Stuart Thompson. Thompson will bring his magnificent Ford Mustang to the Muscle Day, a car that he purchased some eight years ago, and is not only a show car, but one that has enormous performance as well.

Getting the car to go fast down the ¼ mile is great but getting it to go fast around corners is even better” “I love to take the car on Sunday cruises with the family but also love having fun with it by competing in tarmac rallies and other sort of on track events,” he said. The Stars n Stripes will be prominent and the typical American razzmatazz evident as organisers conduct several activities during the day. Many activities are already planned with a Show n Shine, Drags, Racing, Hillclimbs, Hot Laps, Cruzing the track and much more. Among those participating will be Wakefield Park’s resident American muscle car enthusiast Brad McDonald, the proprietor of Total Exposure Photography and proud owner of a left hand drive 1979 C3 Corvette. Once you get in the know, you will learn the Corvertte’s are referred to as a Vette, and speaking to Brad about his pride and joy, you discover just how passionate he is about the car.

Wanting a bullet proof ) engine led Brad to Gulgong engine builder Denis Mealing, The Vette’s have an amazing fan base in and he set to building what is a magnifithe states, the ‘79 C3 being the most cent power plant. That is pretty much summed up by the happy snapper, who said his idea was to have a Vette on steroids, but still be a streetable machine. Come All American Muscle Day on December 10, Brad said he will be participating in all events from Show ‘N’ Shine to driving events, weather permitting. ”Although the Corvette was built for straight line work it should be OK as long as we keep off the boost on the bends. “On the day we will be doing a Power Skid to encourage the boys to put the there peddle down and not there mouth down the straight on the 1/8 mile,” McDonald said. . “A Power Skid is a demonstration of sheer horsepower to see who can go the longest and most tyre shredding smoke. What is the Future Racer Challenge? )

Future Racers are definitely pound for pound one of the most impressive race cars to hit the circuit. With a 1000cc Yamaha engine the Future Racer is a tubular chassis construction with a sequential gearbox.

After a number of years Future Racers have refined their bodywork to the sleek look and added larger 17 inch wheels. The cars look the part and get around fast.

As everyone is well aware, motorsport is not cheap and he has done everything out of his own pocket, and works on the car when he can, as he said “through blood sweat and tears (and beers!). Mazda MX5’s are a real surprise packet, particularly considering their 75rwkw. Showing how he has improved in the little 1800cc racer, the Quick MX5’s lap times have been dropping considerably since he started in 2009. At Wakefield Park his best lap when he first started in the MX5, his fastest lap was 1m:15:1seconds, then in August this year he had reduced it to 1:m13:8seconds, while at Eastern Creek he has improved by as mammoth 3.6 seconds. “I know I’ll never be a front runner and that does not worry me. I love being at the track especially Wakefield – it feels like a home away from home and a sense of belonging. There is nothing better than 20+ cars with their revs up.” October 30th 0211
