PHOTOS FROM THE FOOTPATH: TAKING A CLOSER LOOK AT OLD BETHNAL GREEN
PHOTOS FROM THE FOOTPATH: TAKING A CLOSER LOOK AT OLD BETHNAL GREEN When dashing about day to day, it’s easy to miss the many interesting sights close to home. On the five-week Photos from the Footpath course in AprilMay 2015, a group of residents from the ‘Well London’ Old Bethnal Green area explored their neighbourhood together, cameras in hand.
Our mission was to photograph the local street life, architecture, landmarks and people. Some of us were first-time photographers, others were more experienced; photography tuition and one-to-one guidance helped us develop our camera techniques and composition skills. Each week we explored different walking routes, including behind-the-scenes visits to local landmarks. And along the way we heard stories about the places that we visited. Throughout the project, we discussed our photos with one another and worked together to create a collection of local images.
This booklet – and the exhibition at the Minerva Centre – brings together over 50 of our photos, curated into themed groups. All of the images were taken within (or on the fringes of) the Well London area, bounded by Warner Place, Hackney Road, Cambridge Heath Road and Old Bethnal Green Road. As you flick through the booklet, or wander around the Minerva Centre, we hope you see the local neighbourhood afresh. We’d love to hear your thoughts on the photos – please get in touch at graham@walkeast.org. And over the coming months be sure to explore the side streets, estates, community centres and gardens around Old Bethnal Green yourself; slow down, open your eyes, and see first hand what a remarkable place it is. Thank you to Well London Old Bethnal Green programme for funding the project and exhibition. Graham Barker and Natalie Clarke Project coordinators
