Spring has sprung… let’s get cleaning and organizing!

THE HINT OF WARMER WEATHER HAS SPARKED A DESIRE TO ORGANIZE EVERY ROOM IN MY HOUSE – I am in full spring cleaning and de-cluttering mode! Are you feeling the

same way? Before you tackle your home, you may want to pick up The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, by Japanese organizational consultant Marie Kondo. Among other helpful tips, this book helps you organize your home based on one criteria for keeping objects: Does the item “spark joy”? If it does, keep it; if it doesn’t, throw it away (curb, sell or donate). When you look at items with this objective in mind, de-cluttering your home becomes a simpler task. This approach has been super useful to me during my home purge. In this issue, we also have helpful advice from cleaning industry leaders Molly Maid. Catch their quick and effective tips on page 29. Warm weather also inspires me to be outside! Like many of you, I can’t wait to get the garden looking great, set up the patio furniture and fire up the barbecue. Spring is the perfect time to get your yard in order and create that backyard oasis, so you can enjoy being outside to the max once summer is here. Designer Paul Semkuley showcases a beautiful backyard re-design on page 18. Who needs to head to Muskoka, when you can create a cottage-like feel at home?

And on page 36, international landscape designer Carson Arthur breaks down some of the hottest trends in outdoor living for 2015. I’m particularly partial to the trend of adding traditional decor elements found inside, such as a rug, to your outside. There are so many beautiful and intricate outdoor rug designs to choose from these days, which makes the patio a true extension of your indoor living space. This issue marks our 10th anniversary! It has been a pleasure bringing you the latest trends, inspiring designs and renovation ideas over the years. Thank you for your continued support.

Recently, Ikea partnered with interior designer

Jillian Harris

to showcase their new Sektion kitchen system– which provides endless possibilities for personalization to suit any space. We adore Jillian’s pretty and feminineinspired cooking space, and we got a chance to ask her all about it!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE DETAIL ABOUT THIS IKEA KITCHEN? J- The drawers-inside-drawers that provide maximum storage! I love how they are removable and adjustable. This makes it easy to store your dishes in drawers so that no reaching or looking is necessary. HOW CAN HOMEOWNERS KEEP ORGANIZED IN THE KITCHEN? I put a reminder in my calendar once every six months to look at everything in my cupboards and drawers to see what I’m using – and how often – and organize accordingly. I find ways to section my cupboards and drawers by using Tupperware containers or other storage containers. Lots of labels are really important to me too, as it makes everything quick, easy and organized. Another secret of mine is keeping like items stored together. For example, I have a drawer that opens things and cuts food like knives, scissors, and bottle openers and a drawer that “stirs” with items like spatulas, spoons, whisks etc. HOW CAN HOMEOWNERS ADD STYLE TO THEIR COOKING SPACE WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK? Adding a touch of fresh herbs and plants you can cook with is a great way to get creative. Also, changing countertop pieces to inexpensive on-trend items such as unique cutting boards, vases and vintage trays. WHAT’S THE BEST MEAL YOU’VE EVER EATEN? I have eaten a ton of great meals, but I’d have to say Spaghetti Bolognese will always have a place in my heart as my favourite meal to eat! IF YOU COULD INVITE ANYONE FAMOUS (LIVING OR PAST) FOR DINNER WHO WOULD IT BE? WHAT WOULD BE ON THE MENU? It would probably be my great grandpa because I’ve heard from everyone in my family that he was such a great guy. I would make him some pork chops, sauerkraut and homemade pierogies. If I had to choose someone famous it would be Oprah, Taylor Swift and Martha Stewart.

COVERSTORY

SUMMER HOME

in the CITY

by PAUL SAMKULEY Photos by LISA PETROLE

As our winters seem to be getting longer and colder, lazy days and warm breezy nights are something to be enjoyed during the summer months. Not everyone wants to drive several hours to get out of the city to your cottage or your home away from home. So what can one do to overcome this?

OUTDOOR TRENDS • U se colour in your furnishings and accessories. Soft pastel colours are trending in accessories and outdoor planters • M ix and match different types of furniture and materials will create a new “indoor” environment outside ie. Acrylic side tables, colourful powder coated iron furniture, with your traditional outdoor materials of teak, cedar and all-weather wicker • B ring the indoors out with outdoor fabric upholstered and slipcovered furniture, and tables that would look just as good in your dining room with pedestal or trestle bases • W ood furniture made from composite materials that provide you the look and feel of wood • M ultiple cooking appliances are key to a successful cooking experience for you and your “cottage” guests ayer your lighting just like you would indoors: First, overall • L ambient or fill lighting with either overhead or wall mounted lights. Next layer with function/task and safety lighting in your cooking or landscaped areas. Lastly, the extra sparkle from candle lit votives and lanterns

The lightness of the fabric keeps the room from being too heavy and formal, while brightening the room. A long-standing client in Midtown Toronto enlisted our services to bring the cottage living to them. With a great landscaped backyard, complete with a heated pool, we were half way there. Their home has a wonderful traditional feel to it, with beautiful transitional furniture and contemporary artwork. With the family room and kitchen located at the back of the house, these rooms connect the house to the outdoor “city cottage” space. What we didn’t want to do was just focus on the actual “outdoor space”, but how we can incorporate and use the family room as a “Muskoka Room”. To create a casual and comfortable cottage setting, custom-made slipcovers were done in a brushed awning-striped cotton twill for the sofa and a brushed cotton twill shell-motif fabric for the two occasional chairs. The lightness of the fabric keeps the .0 from being too heavy and formal, while brightening the room. Durability was also important, so that if someone sat down on the upholstered furniture with a wet bathing suit, the slipcovers can be easily removed and laundered. Even though we have no shells to speak of in and around cottage country, these beachy themed fabrics of shells, coral, flora, paisley on the toss cushions and a giant clam on the coffee table make for a simple, easy and effective way to bring a “cottage feel” to your family room.

Like indoor rooms, we designed and decorated the outdoor space with the same principles in mind to create an interesting and intriguing space. In keeping with our theme from the indoors, custom outdoor bench cushions were made around the dining area in coordinating canvas cotton treated outdoor fabrics along with toss cushions made in varying scales of stripes of red and cream, bringing contrast and texture. While the oversized shell motif adds scale and dimension, the aged teak furniture also brings a beautiful weathered and rusticness to the city backyard landscape. With a creative idea and design in mind, you can have the cottage that you have always wanted right in your own backyard, and without the dreaded driving commute.

GREATDESIGN THANK GOODNESS FOR CANADA BUILDS (canadabuilds.ca), the country’s

leading supplier of modular off-site built homes. On the recommendation of friends (who’d booked the pre-fabricators to build a cottage in Muskoka) we hired the team to create the guest annex at our own lakeside bolthole. They listened intently as we described our perfect bunkie: we definitely needed two bedrooms, a compact living area and sufficient space for breakfast or card games to take place. But we also hoped for sloped ceilings, a wooden floor and a stone finish fireplace. Dion and Roy, the hard working team behind Canada Builds, assured us they could deliver precisely what we had requested. So we worked through drawings, in conjunction with the local township, and held our breath. Just three short months later, our bunkie – a 48-by-10-ft. structure – arrived on the back of a flat bed truck and was craned on to pre-poured concrete foundations. To set a gentle tone inside the space, soft cream walls were painted, while a Boral composite stone fireplace commands visual attention in the main living area. Next, we used a large area carpet from Ikea, having fallen in love with its Mid-Century Modern feel. As a great kick off point for the rest of our scheme, it provided all the inspiration required to choose a grey sofa and complementary chartreuse chairs – ample seating for guests. To suffuse the space with a whiff of Canadiana, we clustered three gnarled wood stools in the centre; a little different from a standard coffee table, sure, but functional nevertheless! To the side of the living area we positioned a black dining set from Ikea. To amplify drama, we lavished the chairs with creamy textural sheepskins and dressed the table with white ceramic forms. Each of the sleep zones is compact – but perfectly formed. Beds are crisply attired in white linen with acres of touchy-feely throws and pillows. We

ALL IN ALL, OUR BUNKIE IS COMPACT, BUT WONDERFULLY STREAMLINED addressed storage issues by hanging hooks and wire racks on the back of sliding wooden barn doors. Just enough function to accommodate needs! All in all, our bunkie is compact, but wonderfully streamlined. And, of course, it’s big on ideas and big on comfort. Guests attest that it’s a welcoming space and a triumph of form and function. We’re thrilled with the work Canada Builds did to bring our vision alive. So thrilled, in fact, that we hired them again for Colin and Justin’s Cabin Pressure, Season Two. And this time, the space we build is reduced in size by 50 per cent. Yet we managed to squeeze in accommodation for four guests. Let’s just say that “bunks” were the order of the day. Tune in for the skinny, on our skinniest space yet. We promise you won’t be disappointed!

Colin and Justin’s Cabin Pressure, Season 2, airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on Cottage Life. The network is currently in free preview.

CONVENTIONAL

NURSERY PHOTOGRAPHY BY Aurora Photography

THIS FUN, HAPPY AND VIBRANT NURSERY WAS designed for a very special couple expecting a little baby girl. Like most nurseries usually are, this was the smallest room in the house. The challenge was to divert the eye to focus on everything else except its size! The primary goal to accomplish, however, was to give the room a completely different look and feel. The parents wanted the room to feel bright, fresh and happy!

When we think of nurseries we usually visualize the stereotypical light blue for boys, baby pink for girls and soft yellows or greens for unknown genders. In this case, we decided to break the mold and add as much punch and contrast as possible while still keeping it soft, sweet and perfectly suited for a baby girl. The client loved corals, so we started with variations of that colour as our foundation and used sea foams as a beautiful complementary secondary colour. There were many tricks we used that helped us bring a lot of pizazz to this beautiful room. Custom-made bedding allowed us to have fun with the fabric selection of the bumper pad in a dark rich coral that was complemented by a deeper teal and damask coral pattern on the skirt. In order to soften up the boldness of the crib’s bedding, we opted to go much softer on the drapes. A light orange honeycomb pattern was used in full-length drapes with a small added touch of sea foam coloured silk inserts at the bottom of each panel. A gorgeous sea foam coloured chair with voluptuous curves and shiny studding detail around the back really anchors the room. A variety of sweet little details such as crystals in the lampshade, silver on the accent table, coral mirrored and silver picture frames and flowers all contribute in making the room feel elegant and very feminine. This small space got a real treat when it comes to bells and whistles! A water colour style vertical stripe wallpaper really ties in all the colours of the room together to make it whimsical and fun. The beautiful wainscoting all around the room truly gives a rich and classy element in the room. The sum of so many exquisite little details made a tremendous difference in creating this special space for our client and played an important role in giving the room the happy, cheerful, bright and inviting feeling we wanted to give our client. It’s okay to stretch out of the conventional comfort zone and allow yourself to explore endless possibilities.

How to select the perfect window treatment

IS OUTSIDE NOISE A PROBLEM? If your windows face a crowded street, sound can be a problem, especially at night. It’s good to know that fabric window fashions offer significant sound absorption to create a more serene setting inside.

electing window fashions is often a complicated decorating decision as there are many practical considerations. Here, are the questions you need to ask, and better yet, the answers to perfect the art of window dressing from Sally Morse, director of creative services for leading window covering manufacturer Hunter Douglas. IS PRIVACY A KEY FACTOR? A general rule of thumb is that if you can see out through closed window treatments during the day, others can see in at night. Look for window fashion innovations such as Silhouette window shadings, with the Signature S-Vane, from Hunter Douglas that offer a combination of sheer fabric to maintain a view of the outside and rotating fabric vanes for variable light control and privacy both during the day and into the night.

How do you decide what style, pattern or size is right for you? Follow these two simple steps to choose the best rugs to suit your room. 1. Choosing the right size: when searching for a family room rug, always make sure it is large enough to sit the front legs of your sofa. The width should be the same as the sofa or a little bit wider. In a dining room, always center the table on the rug ensuring the rug is at least one foot around the table so the chairs fit comfortably as well. Always avoid a medallion pattern otherwise the table may hide the pattern. 2. Pattern and color: In a plain room (either by color or style) you are free to select a colourful rug, something to stand out and compliment the room. Don’t be afraid to play with color, texture and pattern. Choose freely and create your masterpiece!

WITH CANADA’S LONG WINTERS (and

come-and-go springtime), it can feel hard to invest in your balcony or patio, knowing you may not be able to enjoy your outdoor accoutrements for long. To help you get the most of your exterior environment with a clear conscience, I’ve gathered some furniture ideas you can start using right away, and enjoy all year round—even when the summer is far from in season.

FOLDING IS IN

» While the idea of a “folding table” might make you think of a college dorm, sleek modern folding furniture carries a European air— especially lines like the Parisianstyled “Arc En Ciel” collection (French for “rainbow”). » In crisp silvery aluminum, these tables and coordinating park chairs can be stored in a slim niche (say, the narrow cabinet next to your refrigerator) and pulled out at any time, whether that be a sunny summer day or a winter cocktail party. » Folding chairs can also be a great opportunity to introduce a daring accent colour. Try a bold red, bright yellow, or striking black— the airy form of most folding seats means the dose of colour will be minor even when supersaturated. Use it Now: For games night, or in a compact dining nook.

» The classic Walter Lamb armchair (originally designed in the 1940s) in waterproof brass is a perfect choice for those who want to go glam with a light touch. Brass carries the warmth of gold, but typically in a more toned-down hue. We chose one with a rope seat, the result is a perfect nautical accent that can make your patio feel like the deck of a private yacht. Use it Now: Paired with a deep grey sofa, or to add drama in the bedroom.

The trend of gold and copper tones for interior furnishings is rapidly growing—so much so it’s expanded into the outdoors as well.

Bronze Rose Tea Light Holder

GO FOR GOLD

» The trend of gold and copper tones for interior furnishings is rapidly growing—so much so it’s expanded into the outdoors as well. Mid-century modern seats are timeless addition to any interior. With an emphasis on simple forms in bent metal, many styles can work outdoors just as well as in, adding a sophisticated hint of luxe glamour.

Wire Husk Lantern

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT

» It’s hard to remember a time before we lived with wireless electronics, and once you pick up a rechargeable lantern you’ll wonder how you lived without that too. A perfect way to add a soft glow to your bedroom (or anywhere, really) during grey winter days, a wireless light with no batteries to change will revolutionize how you enjoy nights on the patio. » If you do have access to an outlet outdoors, a weather-ready floor lamp redefines an outdoor space in an unexpected way, making it feel that much more like part of your home. Just be sure to anchor it back to a wall, or move it indoors during wild wind. » Wire-cage lanterns are another sophisticated way to add an inviting glow that feels as appropriate on the patio as it does on your dining table (or vanity). Find one in my Yanic Simard Selected collection (YSSelected.com), as well as bronze and golden tealight holders for an extra-radiant glow. Use it Now: Fill in a dark corner with an extra layer of light for fewer harsh shadows.

» Don’t forget the little things that make patio living the thing we crave all winter long—most of which, to be honest, tend to revolve around delicious outdoor dining! Striking tableware effortlessly dresses up even the simplest space; try upgrading to an eye-catching black, gold, or brass cutlery set, and get your hands on some great design every day. » Between paper plates and your traditional stark whites, you’ll find sophisticated outdoor dinnerware that even brings a garden-party atmosphere to a compact patio. Choose an earthy, hand-crafted plate in a loose, imperfect shape and fun colour (or sumptuous deep gray), and punch up anything from homemade barbecue to Sunday afternoon take-out. Use it Now: Mix and match your new finds with everyday basics for fun looks that change with the seasons. Got a must-share indoor/outdoor idea? Tweet me (or Instagram a pic) at @yanicsimard!

STOCK UP ON STOOLS

» Playful plastic stools are already a multifunctional must-have, and move between inside and outside effortlessly. They make either a quick seat or a cocktail table, and are another excellent way to add colour, and introduce a new texture to contrast both your soft interior fabrics and your solid patio surfaces. » Grouped together in clusters, stools make for an excellent coffee table alternative, as you can gather them together to hold a spread of summery dishes or break them up to hold extra guests—plus, if you have to steal one away for another room, you won’t leave a hole in your plan.

LAUNDRY IN

style

Create a functional and fashionable laundry room by JO ALCORN

Make sure you have enough room to deposit dirty clothes, apply stain treatments and fold clothes. Choose a countertop that will hide dust and dirt; I used one from Belanger Laminates, a Canadian company which creates laminates that mimic raw stone. Multiple flecks of colour help hide messes and add an industrial element to the room. Laminate has come a long way in recent years; it’s stunning how you can now get it to look almost identical to stone, but at a fraction of the price. A well-oiled machine needs a good engine. What is a laundry room without gorgeous appliances? For this makeover I chose Whirlpool Duet Steam Front Loaders in Chrome Shadow. Not only are they stunning, they are also a homeowner’s dream. They keep clothes looking newer longer, and have amazing features that make caring for clothing simple. The washing machine does all the work for you, determining your load size, adding the right amount of detergent, even steaming and removing wrinkles. Laundry sinks can be stylish! Don’t forget about the sink, which is an integral part of any working laundry room. I wanted to find a faucet that was both stylish and that makes life easier. I chose a Delta faucet which you can simply touch anywhere on the spout or handle with your hand, wrist or forearm to start and stop the flow of water. If your space doubles as a mudroom, this sleek faucet is not only visually appealing, it is also a great solution to clean up muddy hands easily after gardening or washing up when arriving home from school, work, sports or after taking the dog for a walk.

MAKE SURE YOU GIVE YOUR LAUNDRY ROOM SOME LOVE TO CREATE A ROOM THAT WORKS FOR YOUR ENTIRE FAMILY.

THE LAUNDRY ROOM GETS A LOT OF WEAR AND TEAR,

but is often the most neglected room, design-wise! For my latest project, I wanted to showcase the laundry room, and how it can be designed as a functional and fashionable space. Clean, simple colours. I chose washable gloss-white cabinets and

applied a coat of CIL Wexford Fog on the walls. The simple colour palette created a calming effect in a usually chaotic room. I added in greys and stainless steel touches throughout the room for a more unisex overture. The laundry room isn’t just the woman’s domain! Who doesn’t need more storage? I turned to Cutler Modern Living,

a company that makes cabinetry in Canada and sells through Lowe’s stores (cutlermodernliving.com). The upper cabinets are used to store and hide away detergents, extra towels and cleaning supplies, keeping the space organized. Make room for countertop space. Don’t overlook counter space!

The little touches. The laundry room doesn’t have to be a room you dread heading into. I wanted to make it a place that was functional and stylish and with a few touches from Bouclair Home, the look was achieved. I added a great piece of artwork, a bowl for keys and a multitude of great baskets to keep the room in tip-top shape. Everything is out of sight and organized, but very easy to access.

Make sure you give your laundry room some love to create a room that works for your entire family. Who knows, you just might enjoy doing the laundry.

OUTDOORLIVING

2015

OUTDOOR by CARSON ARTHUR

outdoor living and renovating has become a trend in itself. With new stats coming out every day about the impact of outdoor renovations on home value, landscaping is quickly rising to the top of the to-do list. So, whether you are planning on renovating or just sitting outside and enjoying the sun, here are my top outdoor trends for 2015.

WHETHER YOU HAVE A LARGE BACKYARD OR A BALCONY BUILT FOR TWO,

1

Colourful Barbecues. Building on their success of the condo-sized Q-1200 propane barbecue, Weber has launched a new line of the popular model with bright and colourful lids! Now you can have a grill that also adds a splash of colour to your balcony or condo. These smallscaled units use liquid propane cylinders vs. the big tanks, making them portable and space saving. Functional and stylish at the same time!

$109.

2

Outdoor rugs‌that look like grass! Canadian Tire’s new private label, Canvas, is coming into the market place with a rug that surprised me with its unique innovation. Combining the look of turf with a classic baroque design, these carpets are not to be confused with the indoor models. Finally, we have a carpet that complements outdoor living.

3

Heirloom Vegetables. The Grow-It-Yourself movement has firmly taken root in Canada! GIY has been my mantra for several years, and now homeowners are jumping on board with planters and gardens full of vintage veggies and herbs. This trend of growing food that you know is safe for your family has really resonated with the younger generation, with millennials starting seed saving companies and protesting anything GMO. Smart tools. With gas-powered garden tools

quickly on their way out, new technology is filling the void with “smart” devices that are cleaner and make the job easier for homeowners. Autosense technology is the way of the future, with mowers that know when you need a little extra juice to get through the tough patches. Black & Decker’s newest offering, the 40V Max, promises to make cutting the lawn easier than ever.

between a deck or a patio? Love the look of wood but want the longevity of stone? Now you can have both! Rinox has introduced Canada to the Bosco line – a patio stone modeled after wood. Tank-in fire tables. Want the look of an outdoor fire pit but don’t have the space? Maybe you’re neighbourhood doesn’t allow for outdoor burning. Propane fireplaces and fire tables have become the easy and mess-free solution. My personal favourite is the Walden Conversation Gas Fire Table. It’s medium height model, which is taller than a coffee table but lower than a dining table is perfect for both purposes. Not only do they look great and are multifunctional, these tables hide the tank, so no one has to see the pipes!

A home is not much different. Just like your car, a home requires regular maintenance to ensure that it is kept in pristine condition when it comes time to sell. Unlike your car, the value of your home doesn’t drop the second you move in! Maintaining your home means keeping track of the durability of your building envelope – the physical separators between the conditioned and unconditioned environment of a building. In simple terms, it’s what keeps air, water, heat, light and noise in and out of your home. The three basic elements of a building envelope are a weather, air and thermal barriers. When all three work properly, your home is more energy efficient, safe and comfortable. As the name suggests, the building envelope wraps around your home and includes the foundation, the outside walls and the roof. These are the most important elements of the envelope. If damaged, they can affect a number of settings within your home, such as the plumbing, heating or electrical components. Don’t neglect the doors and windows of your home – they are also part of the envelope and are more vulnerable than the brick walls. Your windows have an expiration date, particularly if neglected, and can significantly affect the energy efficiency of your home if improperly maintained. There are a number of tell-tale signs that your home may be in need of some maintenance. Some of the more common symptoms include excess moisture on the inside of your walls and windows, water stains on the ceiling or a draft coming from an area around your windows or doors.

It is important that you don’t ignore these problems as they have the potential to escalate, leading to costly repairs later on. Not only will that impact the resale value of your home, but it will reduce your ability to enjoy your home. If you’re not confident in your ability to fix the problem, I highly recommend you hire a professional contractor to inspect the property. They are trained and experienced in spotting potential problems and will be able to give you expert advice on what kind of repairs should be done, as well as how much you should spend. I recommend using one of our RenoMark renovators found at www. renomark.ca. All of these companies have agreed to abide by a renovation specific code of conduct, which includes carrying $2 million liability insurance, providing at least two years worth of warranty and documenting any agreement with a detailed, written contract. Trusting the maintenance of your home to a professional will not only help you preserve the value of your home, but will help save you money in the long run.
