ne of the best things about Canada is the changing seasons. Behind us are the dog days of summer, and ahead are cool evenings, changing colours, cosier clothing and seasonal scents. The arrival of fall brings a new focus, and it’s rooted in the preparation of shelter for the winter that blows in behind it. Let’s break down the best projects to consider for the new season.

Address your envelope Windows and doors will soon be closing. Fresh air, however, is a year-round need inside all buildings, including your home. Warmer air is soon to be a need as well. This is the perfect time to schedule a furnace inspection and tune-up, duct cleaning, and open up and clean out your ventilation fans and dryer vent to ensure that things are free-flowing and operating as they should. Don’t wait until you need the heat, as then it might be too late. If your home has an HRV or ERV, now would be a good time to begin rerunning it to ensure fresh air exchange to the benefit of your entire family. With the cooler weather, reflect on how the previous

winter was at your home. Perhaps an energy audit by a certified adviser, or a top-up of your attic insulation, may help make things more comfortable this year.

Regular exterior maintenance The dry summer months will give way to moisture. Eavestroughs, downspouts, window and door caulking, shingles, positive grade

sloping and sump pump/backwater valve checks are a must at this time of year, in preparation for the increased moisture for the following three seasons. Make sure everything is operating freely and avoid having to fix a problem in a flood, or when it’s freezing outside. Watch for those frost events that can come up quickly, to cover sensitive plants and shut off hose bibs to avoid freezing.

Foundations Fall typically marks the end of installing new foundations for additions or custom homes. It’s the perfect time to get them in the ground, allowing you to build over the winter and get ready to move in when the weather is nicer. If you can’t get going now, this also marks the best time to firm up your foundation plans for spring. With summer’s busy schedule out of the way, the kids are back to school, and our desire to get work done can help us set forth our plans and commitments to improve our homes in the coming year. It all starts with a plan – and now is the best time to convert those ideas and dreams into concrete actions.

The season extending essentials Pergolas, portable heaters, fire pits and cosy throw blankets,

infrared or wood-fired saunas and hot tubs can all help to keep your core warm, allowing you to still enjoy the outdoors in the fall. It is officially cuddle season, too, so snuggle up and soak in the last few days and nights where it is truly comfortable to sit and relax outside. Last year, patio extending products were in record demand, so move quickly if you don’t want to be left out in the cold. relaxed vibe of The Summer House – a boutique Airbnb property on the shores of Lake Huron. And, yes, you can book a stay here!

ometimes, builder grey needs a little boost. We really needed to get our collective creative juices flowing for this project because we had to take this home from builder basic to unique and stay-worthy. We worked together and combined our roles as designers,

short-term vacation experts and Instagram influencers to create the ultimate getaway destination. Our clients had a unique vision for this property. After experiencing fertility issues, the couple became passionate about their journey to promote health and wellness,

especially for women. You won’t even find a TV in this rental, as it’s designed as a place to unplug and unwind. In the living room we carefully considered the colour palette for this project. It is feminine yet neutral, with soft pinks, taupes, rusts, creams and peaches. We reupholstered a vintage sofa in hardwearing indoor/outdoor pale pink fabric – the unique sofa steals the show and adds a burst of life to the otherwise white space. Open shelves allow accessories in the home’s signature palette to add colour to the all-white kitchen. While pink is the running colour throughout the house, we also created two blue bedrooms in the soft hues of the nearby lake, invoking a spa-like feel. The tile in this property is one of our favourite design elements. You can have more fun with colour in a short-term vacation rental and take risks you might not in your full-time home. In one washroom, we created a striped pink and white pattern that echoes the rust-toned living room rug, and we did an oversized pink penny tile in the other. We would love to see more people experimenting with colour in fixed elements such as tile, but if that’s too big of a commitment, accessories and textiles are a great place to start.

Creating custom furniture for this short-term rental was a designers dream! We transformed the dining room into a bistro nook resembling a cafe. We also created a custom 12-ft. wall-to-wall blue velvet headboard in one of the bedrooms, making it feel like a boutique hotel. For the headboard, we went with a beautiful sea-blue velvet reinforcing the relaxing atmosphere. Colour plays a valuable role in design, and can really enhance the mood of a space. Thoughtfully designed down to the last detail means this is a place that encourages you to appreciate the moment and celebrate everything life has to offer – a perfect, restful retreat and escape from everyday life.

Colour isn’t just for kids

Designer and colour consultant Tiffany Pratt (aka The Queen of Colour) shares inspiring tips on how you can live your life colourfully even as an

adult!

e have all been living through an incredible time during the pandemic. As a result, our collective “normal” has changed. The focus of our lives has become less about “where we can we go” and more about

“what we can do” to create something new or fun in our individual lives. Many Canadians are looking to bring order and beauty into their homes. For the past year, many of us have taken home organization, culling and repurposing possessions, creating new workspaces and elevating decor to lift

our spirits to a new level. How we use our homes, how we look at the same four walls and how we want to live has risen to the top of our to-do lists. And we’re considering everything – including the use of colour in our living spaces. Colour is having a comeback moment, and I couldn’t be happier.

Tiffany Pratt is a Toronto-based multi-disciplinary designer. She supports corporate clients and the public on projects ranging from creative direction, product design, interiors, colour consultation and personal styling. Colour has a way of changing our lives. No joke As a designer and colour consultant, I used to apply my colour skills mainly for children’s spaces – because kids love colour. However, I now see most of my residential and commercial projects include a voracious appetite for pigment. People have opened up to what I have long preached: Colour has a way of changing our lives. No joke. Prismatically, our moods and outlooks are significantly impacted by what we surround ourselves with, and colour is one of the most critical influences. Colour has been my thing since I was a child. Today, I am still deeply attached to the spectrum, and I read a lot about the psychology of colour. My work as a designer and colour consultant means more than just ascetically shifting and physically transforming things. It’s something more profound; colour is a personal form of communication. It can cause reactions and change your actions. The Russian (colourful) artist Wassily Kandinsky once said: “Colour is a

power which directly influences the soul.” It really highlights just how powerful colour is. More than ever, we need to embrace positive changes that are easy to make. Whether that’s painting your toenails or walls all violet and pink, just go for it! As we round the corner on these difficult times, we can come out of our comfort zone a bit. Have a little more fun. Maybe, with these simple additions of colour, we catch on to why children are more joyful. Their spaces are typically teeming with colour!

1. Make sure that the pillows you choose for your bed are conducive to your sleep style. For example, a flatter pillow if you sleep on your stomach, or a more supportive one for your neck if you sleep on your side. 2. Unplugging 30-60 minutes before bed helps your brain set the stage for sleep, thereby enhancing your ability to fall asleep. If you can, make use of your phone’s “do not disturb” function for the night, which will allow for only VIP people in your life to call in case of an emergency. 3. 1980s style home gets a modern update elements with a mix of

hen clients from Toronto approached me with the idea of transforming a dated 1980s style home into an urban and rustic abode, I knew I had my work cut out for me, but I was up for the challenge. I wanted to keep the charm and feel of a Niagara-on-theLake home, but infuse both clients’ personalities and style into the space. We discussed their interests, reasons for relocating out of Toronto, and how they saw themselves living in the space – all of which provided valuable insight. The result? A perfect mix of old and new and a home that is truly one of a kind.

Dining room The home was very compartmentalized and in need of a reworking, not only with finishes but with the existing layout, as well. The bones had character. I opened it up and allowed more light to reflect through the space, which really brought the home to life. nexthome.ca | myhomepage.ca

Flooring The engineered hickory floors brought the rustic feel I was after.

Living room By removing walls between the dining and living room and creating a full-height fireplace clad in concrete panels, the initial feel of the space became much grander, and complemented the vaulted ceiling.

Entrance My favourite design element was replacing the existing wall between the entrance and the office with a glass wall, to add depth and light into the overall space. 36

At the heart of this stunning office are design elements that spark joy and healing

hen it came to the design of this office, it was all about creating a space for inspiration and healing. My client lost her husband to cancer. As a result, she and her daughter needed a space to feel joy and comfort, even in painful moments. My client hired me to transform a room into a shared office space that could be used with her daughter. The area had to symbolize a new beginning. She needed a space where they could heal and honour her passing husband’s memory. My goal was to create a shared space that would feel feminine and peaceful – which was no small task. The first thing I worked on when developing this area was picking the colour palette. It required thoughtfulness to ensure the colour scheme was comforting and soothing. I chose yellow as the primary hue because it represents optimism. The next focus was on furniture placement, making sure the layout brought a great view of

the outdoors. The work desks were positioned to take advantage of the window and natural lighting. A room with a view and a connection to nature increases a sense of calm. Plants are also a great way to introduce a serene outdoor vibe; they also help absorb toxins. If you don’t have a green thumb, don’t worry – snake plants are a great, durable option. Lighting was next. Adding overhead lighting and wall sconces created visual interest, while bringing balance for a soothing environment. The lighting also places focus on the art in the room, which plays such a significant role. The artwork in this room demonstrates representation; this was important, as the client wanted to make sure her daughter could see herself represented in the artwork. Altogether, the room makes you feel optimistic. And who wouldn’t want this feeling in an office? This space is ideal for our lovely client to connect with her daughter and create memorable moments as they work and engage together.

Louis Duncan-He shares insight on decorating with yellow and grey and why it’s a timely colour combination

t came as no surprise when Pantone released its two colours of the year – Ultimate Grey and Illuminated Yellow. Although the combination has been quite a popular pairing through the decades, they couldn’t be more different in terms of the feelings and emotions they conjure. Yellow, with its bright, effervescent sheen, directly contrasts to the monotonous and monochromatic dullness of grey. One symbolizes joy and optimism, while

the other elicits an almost sterile sense of the familiar. As a result of these naturally opposing qualities, they’re not the most straightforward combination to execute. But with an understanding of how to balance their inherent characteristics, they can be a fresh and elegant accent to any home. The effect that yellow has on a space is similar to the impact turmeric has on food; a little goes a long way. Yellow by nature is an attentiondrawing hue – we don’t use it as a

highlighter because it fades into the background. Because of this, it’s most effective when used with confidence and a sense of purpose. Our homeowners wanted a serene and contemporary retreat, with the elegance and gravitas of the Guggenheim. They wanted fresh, contemporary, understated yet compelling... which naturally led to the idea of yellow as an accent. To make sure the home didn’t get too loud and vibrant, we used grey as a

the past year and also looking forward to the future, grey and yellow seem to be the exact combination of colours that accurately reflect the emotional state of the rest of the world key element and diffuser. We used it to upholster the custom sectional and as a base note in rugs, artwork and decor. In a way, grey is like a chameleon – it can take on the tint and hue of nearby colours. When mixing grey and yellow, think about the vibrancy and contrast levels. To hit the perfect curated note in this home, we mixed in an abundance of texture, shapes and sheen throughout. Our starting point in the formal dining room was a custom-designed trio of yellow, black and grey abstract art pieces. Understanding the impact of their dominating presence, we turned up the collective volume of the rest of the room. Using a high-gloss white

lacquer table, creamy and natural chairs, and modern and structural white Pantone chairs as table ends, we brought up the energy and interest level of the remaining space, which mellowed out the attentiondrawing artwork. When trying to round out your space, think about the varying stylistic differences between your two loudest pieces. While turning up the volume can be used as a balancing tool in some cases, never underestimate the power of mother nature. At Louis DuncanHe Designs, that natural West Coast perspective is embedded in our DNA. In the Great Room, we added natural driftwood tables; ombre textured throw pillows, canary kissed florals and a large-scale rug with a fluid water motif in a golden spectrum of yellow and greys. With the room’s sheer size, openness and ceiling

height, the best way to add serenity and tone down our striking accent colour was to go natural. Introducing more stylized and sculptural pieces would have skewed the space more dramatic and daring, which would have taken the room in an entirely different direction. You can never go wrong with the addition of natural and organic elements to a home, and by doing so in this space, we were able to hit that perfect note straddling high-end design and relaxing oasis. Thinking about the past year, and looking forward to the future, grey and yellow seem to be the exact combination of colours that accurately reflect the emotional state of the rest of the world. While I can certainly appreciate the symbolism that lives within this powerful colour combination, I marvel at the transformative powers they can have in our hearts and home.

How to achieve a monochromatic look that is anything but boring

onochromatic spaces are trendy, yet timeless, effortless in their aesthetic, and strategic in their execution. There’s no doubt this chic look requires a thoughtful

approach, and a commitment to see it through. Of course, a few tips from a professional designer will go a long way to mastering this classic look. Here’s how you can add interest to a monochromatic interior, while staying true to this one-hue wonder.

Colour is often an easy way to add personality and warmth to a home. It brings the eye where you want it, and even in small doses, it can have a strong impact. When you’re working with just one colour option within a monochromatic motif, you can create the same effect using contrast and

vibrancy. Crank up the brightness and saturation of your colour of choice and use it to highlight the focal points in the room, and take the eye where you want it to focus. When your colour palette centres around light neutrals or white, add pops of black in small but powerful punches. You can also achieve a different level of contrast using materials and texture. Incorporate wood and stone and other natural elements into your space, with items such as glass and reflective metallics. Each of these is different from the others in terms of texture, but they’re all neutral by style standards, so they won’t compromise your overall monochromatic aesthetic. What about the “soft” elements in your space? Pillows and throws, window treatments, upholstery and the rug beneath your feet can all go a long way in adding warmth and texture to a monochromatic space. Linen, silk, cotton, corduroy,

wool, faux fur, chunky knits and other options bring various tactile experiences into the room. Look for a variety of patterns and textures, but stay true to your colour palette. Lighting also plays a key role in bringing depth and dimension to a space, and should include a combination of ambient, task and accent lighting. Ambient is the general lighting in the room, often in the form of ceiling fixtures, including pot lights or a chandelier. A century-old staircase gets a fresh new look

ur most recent reno project was small by comparison to everything else we’ve done, but I’m still in awe of how big of an impact it’s made. The very first thing you see when you walk into our house is the staircase leading upstairs. With its original 100-yearold-plus railing, the only TLC it’s had over the decades is a few coats of paint and a runner. By the time we arrived, both had seen better days. In keeping with the neutral palette everywhere else in the house, we wanted to get rid of the cherry tint on the railing and drab grey on the walls, going for a contrast of black and white. The stairs also needed a complete refinish – there were cracks, dents, creaks and in some places chunks of the base rail were gone. We could have put in a new, more modern railing, but in keeping with the heritage and integrity of the home, we instead decided to restore the original one. To start, we addressed the cosmetic issues, using putty to fill in the dents, sanding to smooth (and prep for painting) and caulking where there were cracks. The stairs creaked quite a bit, so we used construction adhesive to glue the stairs back together and screwed the treads and risers from underneath. Doing this also helped strengthen the steps. The top step was the biggest concern, so we reinforced it from below with wood framing. Next came the design choices (personally, my favourite part of any home project). I consulted interior designer (and sister-in-law) Jessica Frehr of Madison Taylor, on the paint colours first. I told her I wanted a

black rail and treads, so she suggested Benjamin Moore’s Black – a beautiful, true black. We also had to consider the paint finishes, going with Benjamin

For the runner, Frehr recommended Alexanian, as many designers trust the company’s years of experience (almost as old as our house), and extensive selection of brands. I went solo to Signature by Shelley Alexanian, the flagship, boutique-style store in Toronto. With limited capacity due to COVID restrictions, it was almost like having the shop to myself. Matt Barrett, the store’s manager, was by my side as I attempted to narrow down the hundreds (let’s be honest, probably thousands) of carpets I could select for the runner. At this point, I had wished I had brought my sisterin-law, but Barrett listened carefully to what I was drawn to (neturals, pattern), disliked (bold prints) and had concerns about (a cat that likes to claw, and a toddler). A couple hours later, and many texts to a patient Frehr, we eventually narrowed the choices down to my top three. A subtle herringbone in a neutral hue, a black diamond pattern and a more traditional plaid. I lugged the samples back home to look at them in my space, get my husband’s opinion and sleep on it. The next day we decided on the diamond pattern – Recoleta Onyx by Couristan – that Barrett helped select was the winner. Thankfully, it was in stock – meaning we wouldn’t have to wait months to have it installed. A few days later, Barrett came by to take the measurements to provide an accurate quote. After a couple weeks, Curvin Watson from Signature by Shelley Alexanian came by to do the templating. He got a bit of a surprise when he discovered we hadn’t removed the old runner. “Luckily, I have over 35 years of doing this,” he told us. “It won’t be a problem.” Phew. Thankfully his experience meant we didn’t have to frantically rip out our carpet, but lesson learned, you need a blank canvas for your runner to be templated.

Our anticipation was growing, with the stairs painted and finished and the old runner out. It did confirm our decision to have a runner, as the uncovered stairs offered much less traction. Not to mention, we needed a runner to hide some of the imperfections years of wear had imparted on the treads. It wasn’t long before the carpet was ready. Our installer, Abraham Daoud arrived bright and early on a Saturday morning. He was quick to point out our stairs were very uneven (not a surprise considering their age) – in some places there was as much as an inch from one end to the other, on a single step. This meant it would take extra precision to ensure the pattern lined up correctly as the carpet was fitted over each step. The pattern alignment would take precedence over the variations in distance on the top of the tread. Within a couple of hours, the install was complete, and as far as I could see, you would never know we have uneven, crooked stairs. Adding a new entryway mirror, large black pendant light and vintage stool, we finally have a finished entryway and a stairway that pops. It goes to show how a few coats of paint and new carpet can completely revive a space. A kitchen and open-concept living space gets a modern update with a pop of bold colour

fter purchasing our home from my grandmother in the fall of 2019, it was time to update the main floor. The kitchen is the heart of the home, and this one was in desperate need of a revamp. The open concept was a must with plenty of storage for our family of four. When it came time to design the kitchen, incorporating a bold colour was at the top of my list. Being an artist and interior decorator, I needed the space to feel bright and inviting. I love the impact a single colour can create in a space. I chose Hunter Green by Benjamin Moore because it is a deep dark green that can be used in various ways. When used correctly, it can really add personality to a space. By using neutral tones on the more prominent design elements such as cabinetry, countertops and backsplash, I created balance with pops of colour around the room. When we purchased the home, it was dark and conventional. I chose Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore for the walls, ceiling and trim because

it’s a bright white, with no warm or cool undertones. It also pairs well with any accent colour. By keeping the permanent design elements neutral, I can change the accent colour at any point in the future. This is an easy and cost-effective way to modify your decor look whenever you feel like it. Using a lot of white in an open space can become quite mundane. Using gold and green accents around the open concept room provided balance. I wanted the kitchen to feel light and airy. Using open shelves creates a unique way to display accents such as glassware, decor items, and plants. But with open shelving comes the lack of storage. When it came time to design the walk-in pantry, I made sure we used up every available inch for storage. Having two young children in the house meant needing space for plenty of snacks. The pantry was custom built by Tom Traver Carpentry, and we spent many weeks getting it just right. We added a wine rack, butcher block counters, and electrical outlets for hiding the not-so-pretty kitchen appliances (microwave, toaster and coffee maker). The sliding door is practical for the pantry because it allows ample space to enter without obstructing the flow. It is also easy to close when it becomes messy inside, perfect for those busy mornings. The sliding barn door was designed to mimic the accent wall in our front entry. I used black tile and grout inside the pantry to achieve a softer look but also to create depth. In the main kitchen area, grey grout was paired with the white hexagon tile to complement the grey details in the quartz countertop. I covered the entire window wall in tile because it generates a much-needed dramatic look. We saved time and money by keeping the existing window in the same location. By adding new moulding around the window, it looks larger and refreshed. The kitchen before lacked counter space and storage. We changed the layout of the appliances specifically for flow. Removing the centre wall in the main living area opened up the room completely, allowing ample space for a large island and plenty of storage. The grey stone island now acts as an anchor in the kitchen. Its size and location are ideal for entertaining, with enough space to fit four stools comfortably. It was such a satisfying experience designing this kitchen, but watching it all come together was the most rewarding part.

Colourful autumn gardening ideas

hen your hanging baskets are hanging just a little more than you want, and your petunias have gone stringy, it’s time to assess a sprucing-up – think about replacing them with reliable fall blooming plants. Here are our top perennials for fall colour:

1. New England asters The cultivated varieties are related to the native plant, only they flower longer, and the blooms are arranged in tight masstes for best effect. Butterflies love these, too. Plant lots where you want to punch up the colour using bright white, red or blue. Yes, blue. It’s hard to find perennials with a blue flower this time of year, but asters are your number one choice. They are winter hardy north of Ottawa, too.

2. Sedum Spectabilus There are many sedum varieties to choose from, but “spectacle” is a favourite this time of year. This plant produces a broad flower in various colours covering the range between red/bronze and magenta. We recommend that you plant a few up near the front door where butterflies will find them. As you approach the front door, you will be greeted by a winged greeting committee as they forage for nectar and pollen.

We think of roses as late spring and early summer flowering plants – people use them in June weddings for this reason. That is accurate, but rose bushes generally bloom a second time quite reliably, right about now. The main difference in a fall rose blossom is that it lasts much longer than the spring production, due to the cool temperatures this time of year. We have picked roses and brought them indoors as cut flowers as late as mid-November. A bonus is that you can get a great deal on rose bushes this time of year at most garden retailers. All you have to do is prepare the soil with lots of triple mix and plant them. Rose petals are edible – another bonus. Shrub roses will survive our winter without protection; most others need to be mounded up with about 30 cm of soil, but not for some time yet – early to mid-November works in most areas.

The introduction of Belgium mums 25 years ago means more affordable varieties of this flower today. Now you can purchase a gorgeous garden mum for less than the old-fashioned ones, with a flower bud count that is through the roof. Really. Mark had one last year at the front door, and he counted more than 700 blossoms on it. That’s about two cents per blossom. You can’t get better value for your bloom-bucks than that. In cool fall weather, they last up to six weeks. They tolerate early season frost, and with some luck, they may come back next year. They are not as reliably winter hardy as the asters.

1. Substantial performance This is a legally defined stage in your project, as outlined in the Construction Lien Act, and means that the work on your project is about 97- to 98-per-cent complete. This starts the release of holdback funds that the client has kept and publicly tells all the trade companies that worked on your home that their final payments are pending.

2. Final inspection Be diligent during your final inspection to catch any defects, damage or work that is not yet complete. Remember that you will have done many other inspections during the renovation process, giving you opportunities to catch problems as they arise.

5. Substantial completion This is a legal term defined in the Building Code, signifying that the house is safe and ready for the occupancy permit to be approved, thus allowing a homeowner to move back home.

6. Learn your new systems and appliances Some contractors offer an ongoing maintenance program that can manage the replacement of air filters or other items.

7. Review your warranty Be aware of everything that is included. If you aren’t sure about something, ask questions.

3. Create a ‘punch list’ This list will be the result of your final inspection and will list all items that need to be addressed. Adding new items to a punch list after it is created is typically not done, so make sure you’re thorough when you do your final inspection.

4. Final homeowner approval Final approval is your opportunity to review all the completed items from your punch list. If there’s still a problem, don’t approve that item.

Yes, it’s a classic decorating colour and one with a rich spectrum. From light almond and copper to a dark espresso bean colour, brown is versatile, striking and a fresh alternative to black, grey or navy. It’s a neutral hue that pairs well with a variety of bolder colours such as cobalt blue, olive green and pink (a la our front cover).
