Trend watch

2014

by YANIC SIMARD

i

t’s already time to look ahead to 2014, and take fresh inspiration from the new trends it brings. Although it never pays to cling to trends too closely, they can be a great source of ideas that will add a little life when you find your space suffering from the wintertime blahs. Here’s my suggestion of five furniture trends to watch, that you can count on sticking around longer than a year.

Miniature vs. oversized Small space aficionados know that “condo-sized” furniture is no new invention. I’ve often said “go big or go home!” or maybe “go big and go home!” But lately people are also going the opposite route, and choosing a size extra small. Rather than compromising on versions of favourite furnishings shrunk slightly to fit into a compact floor plan, choose statement pieces – big or small – that will bring full satisfaction. HOW TO DO IT

› For the ultimate seating plan, fit in the largest sofa you can (for when one or two people are lounging comfortably) and add European-sized compact seats as side chairs to fit in the maximum number of guests during get-togethers. › Miniature chairs in particular are a trend – even beyond the usual 18-inch seat. Petite accent chairs (child sized or even smaller) are charming conversation pieces nestled up to a coffee table, and can be used as occasional side tables when you need to rest a book or beverage.

Rugs Over the past few seasons we’ve really seen the return of the area rug, and now the magic carpet has officially landed. In a condo space with hard floors, area rugs of all shapes and

A tufted leather sofa is a must-have investment piece for a look that speaks to luxury but is also practical. The material will hold up to wear and be easy to maintain. sizes are an excellent way to bring warmth, colour, and a feeling of home, even in the most modernist schemes. They look excellent paired with traditional furnishings or contrasted against sleek minimal forms. The timeless Persian rug especially brings a heritage appeal, although contemporary rugs come in endless patterns and prints to suit any taste. HOW TO DO IT

› For a living area, choose a rug large enough to tuck under all the furniture legs. Add a runner (a skinny rectangle) in a kitchen or hallway, or a large rug to any room for the feeling of carpeting (leaving approximately a 12-inch border around the room). › The inky tones in classic traditional rugs are neutral enough to blend into most schemes. For an already neutral space, consider this an opportunity to add some colour. You can roll the rug away or move it to a new room between seasons for a little change-up.

Tufting Button-tufting is a style invented for practical reasons: the buttons which hold a fabric to its backing (on a chair, headboard or anything upholstered) help keep stuffing in place by creating square or diamond-shaped pockets. The traditional look has lasted through centuries, and for 2014 it will be popular for modern settings as well. The geometric forms created by tufting can enrich the look of even the most streamlined sofa, and can be achieved without buttons for a more subtle quilted effect. HOW TO DO IT

› A tufted leather sofa is a must-have investment piece, for a look that speaks to luxury but is also practical. The material will hold up to wear and be easy to maintain. › Quilting isn’t just for pieces you sit on. It can also dress a cabinet front for a private club appeal.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRANDON BARRE JAN - FEB 2014 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS 9

Origami People have been developing a fascination with facets, and this love of all things angular is leading to a rise in the ancient art of Origami as an inspiration for complex bent forms in various areas of design. Like with tufting, the angles break up a material for visual interest and allow light to catch the item in different ways, adding the subtle drama that contemporary spaces have been missing in years past. HOW TO DO IT

› Table bases are an easily overlooked detail that can benefit from a more fun form. I recently found this chunky golden nugget of a side table to make a simple statement in a client’s home. › Origami also makes for great art, brought to a large scale and in new materials, like the simple but intriguing Fold sculpture I recently spied at Avenue Road.

HOW TO DO IT

› For a quick addition, a few floating shelves (such as the Shellfish series pictured below, by Kartell and available through Elte) can brighten up a wall. You might not even want to bother finding anything to put on them. › To really make a synthetic statement, try a transparent coffee table or night stand. A piece like this visually floats to keep an airy look while adding a shock of colour that defines a furniture grouping.

Plastic For the most future-forward look, it’s hard to beat the appeal of plastic. With people once again celebrating colour, the vivid tones of translucent materials like acrylic and polycarbonate will be the ultimate source of a hue infusion. Semitransparent materials work best grouped together (so their colours overlap and intermingle) or near a light source that will shine through and spread the colour love around. AQUARIAN RENOVATIONS

The Aquarian Way E

stablished in 1991, owners Doug and Marie Soprovich shared a vision to build a company that enhanced the lives of staff and homeowners alike. A business model idealizing trust, quality craftsmanship and the people who personify those ideals. From its humble beginnings as a grassroots renovator to the award winning design-build company it is today, Aquarian Renovations continues to evolve and define themselves with significant contributions to not only the homeowners, but the industry and community they live in and serve. “Finding one’s full potential through work is such a liberating idea as it sets a person free to embrace all of life – not just the weekends! This kind of passion for the work we do and the ownership we take for being leaders in the industry fuels us. We have a strong team and solid systems. We have all grown as individuals and we have also grown as a company. The journey we have been on calls each and every one of us to be better and stronger leaders in the roles we play, in the interactions we have with each other and in the service we deliver to our customers and the communities we serve.” affirms owner Marie Soprovich. “This is what we are here for.” Aquarian designs and executes up market interior and exterior home renovations in Edmonton and area neighbourhoods. Doug Soprovich, a graduate of Building Construction Technology at NAIT, was a third generation building contractor and established Aquarian on solid experience, knowledge, and artistic talent. Aquarian’s design and project management teams are dedicated to a high level of craftsmanship, which they display in every renovation. The walls and shelves at the Aquarian office have a plethora of award winning projects including the current Renovator of the Year award handed out yearly at the CHBA-ER Awards of Excellence. Soprovich reconfirms the value of belonging to an association that works collaboratively to build excellence in the industry. “Awards are wonderful way to show case our work and bring awareness to the possibilities for

As a member of the RenoMark and the Renovation Council with the Canadian Homebuilders Association, we also encourage and actively seek to help other renovators to showcase their work in recognized award programs such as CHBA-ER hosts. Our company strives to be leaders in the industry and in building professionalism within the renovation community through leadership, collaborative efforts and good practice. We contribute to the public awareness of what a quality professional Renovation Company can deliver. This is important work.” In addition to industry work, Aquarian’s main focus is on building relationships and trust with their clients. Because of Aquarian’s focus, the majority of their business comes from repeat clients and referrals. Soprovich continued, “With every client that we serve, we strive to extend our reputations of quality, honesty, and professionalism. This is very important to each and every one of us in this company. ” As Aquarian strives to be leaders in the renovation market and industry they also give back to the community. Both owners and many employees are actively involved in community service work. Recently, Aquarian contracted and donated the construction of a gazebo for a Neighbourhood Engagement Project in the Laurier Heights Community. “This was a personal project that Doug took on with particular passion and interest. It was completed and Doug was able to inspect it before his journey with cancer took him away.” Soprovich acknowledged, “Every day that my son and I drive by the gazebo, we look at it as a tribute to a great man with a vision for building people, community and making the world a better place. He lived these ideals.” In May of 2012 Aquarian moved into new headquarters on 142 Street and 114 Avenue. The new office design is also an JAN - FEB 2014 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS 13

The essentials of a renovation

Get it in writing with a RENOMARK contractor Homeowners who have entered into a verbal agreement with a cash operator will get less sympathy in court, as the judge may find that the homeowner conspired with the contractor on tax evasion. Not all consumers are aware of this. PHOTOS COURTESY OF AQUARIAN RENOVATIONS RENOVATING YOUR HOME CAN BE A STRESSFUL TIME even under the best of circumstances. You have opened your home to a contractor with whom you have worked out a plan as to what you want done, how much it will cost, when they will start and when, hopefully, they will be finished. You visualize your dream renovation completed and you are having all your friends over to enjoy the new space! Yes you are living the dream… AND after investing in your renovation project you should have that feeling of satisfaction, peace of mind and a completed renovation you are proud of. Before you start living that dream however you need to understand the value of hiring a professional contractor. A professional contractor will ensure that you understand the standard for how things should be done in a renovation and the value you get when you hiring a company who will put it in writing for you! Getting your contract in WRITING is essential! When a homeowner chooses to take a cash deal from someone who flies under the radar it means that they are sacrificing a range of benefits and they are not protected if something goes wrong. It is so important that these risks are understood by a homeowner. A written contract is essential as you need to know what the contractor is and is BEFORE

not offering. As a homeowner you should also know that you and the people involved in your project are protected with appropriate insurance and other business costs that protect them. If a homeowner makes arrangements with an undocumented cash operator there are a number of issues that become front and centre as soon as something goes wrong. RISKS INVOLVED IN DOING WORK ON YOUR HOME WITH NO WRITTEN CONTRACT COULD INCLUDE:

› Accidents harming people – workers, homeowners, neighbours – no protection › Damage as a result of the work – to the owner’s home or neighbouring property – no protection › Work permits are not obtained where required resulting in a project that is not approved by the municipality, leaving the owner vulnerable to repercussions › Require municipal inspections of the work are skipped › No warranty or follow up if something doesn’t work property – homeowner left on their own › Contractors who don’t pay their suppliers and trades may place a lien on your house › Homeowners have NO legal recourse if problems arise because the arrangements with the cash operator were undocumented. RenoMark renovators are members of Canadian Home Builders – Edmonton Region and are committed to providing

homeowners with the information they need to select the right renovator for their project. At RenoMark the contractors have agreed to the CHBA-ER code of ethics as well as the renovation-specific code of conduct. They provide written contracts, warranties and all the insurance necessary. They understand the value of customer service and continually educate themselves regarding current trends, materials and regulations. RenoMark Renovators understand homeownership and just how hard people have worked for their homes. CREDENTIALS THAT CAPTURE A PROFESSIONAL RENOVATOR INCLUDE:

› A proven track record in the industry with past project lists, references, testimonials from previous clients and contacts › Well-established business practices, project management and client communication › Awareness provided by Renovator as to what is insured by homeowner and what is the responsibility of the renovator › Professional & industry business memberships and affiliations such as Canadian Home Builders – Edmonton Region, RenoMark, Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau and other organizations › Business tools: Written contract, insurance, registration with WCB, and other organizations › Personal & company attributes: experience, training, education and skills, upgrading special expertise, awards etc. › Minimum 2 year warranty › Other consumer information to help with your renovation

A professional renovator’s customers are in good hands. You will know what is going on, what to expect and what everyone’s role is. Your renovation will be a well thought-out process from the beginning to the end and you, the homeowner can feel confident that the job will be done well and effectively, making your experience as pleasant and stress-free as possible. Homeowners will enjoy the results of their choices for many years to come and that is something to celebrate. Next edition will explore the importance of contract review. Remember, Get it in WRITING! * Resources included: Canadian Homebuilders Association “The Get it in Writing Handbook” and RenoMark Website

RENOMARK EDMONTON – WWW.RENOMARK.CA The program identifies those renovation contractors who have agreed to CHBA – Edmonton Region’s code of ethics, as well as a renovation-specific code of conduct, they provide warranties, understand the value of customer service, and continually educate themselves regarding current trends, materials and regulations.

HOW TO SELECT

THE PERFECT BLUEBERRY THIS WINTER BLUEBERRIES ARE NATURE’S PERFECT LITTLE SUPERFOOD and thanks to growers in Chile, these little blue dynamos* are available in grocery stores throughout Canada during the winter. Fresh blueberries are natural cancer-fighters. Heart-healthy, full of antioxidants, vitamin C, and fiber, blueberries are the perfect go-to fruit to pack great nutrition into every meal. But not everyone understands how to select, store and use fresh blueberries. Here are a few pointers to ensure that every fresh blueberry that finds its way onto a plate, in a bowl or in a snacking handful is perfect. In the store, look for firm, plump, dry berries with smooth skins with a silvery sheen. The blueberry’s size isn’t important but, rather, its colour. Look for a deep purple-blue berry; a reddish hue indicates an unripe berry that’s better for cooking. Don’t wash blueberries until just before using them. Store fresh blueberries in either the pack they came in or a covered plastic container. Fresh, ripe blueberries will keep up to ten days in the fridge. Blueberries are easy to freeze. Make sure they’re dry and unwashed; if they look bruised or shriveled, toss them. Freeze the blueberries in their original plastic pack inside a resealable plastic bag, or transfer them to a resealable freezer bag. Wash them just before use. This simple recipe calls for either fresh or frozen blueberries and tastes just as good as it looks. an entire house that needed to be rebuilt from the inside out. It was a structural and mechanical mess. It was fall, they had no heat, no hot water and no money to fix it. That was a big job, but the most rewarding to date. We’ve had to restructure entire houses just because I decided to pull up the floor in the bathroom, and it opens up a real can of worms. At the end of the day, fixing the problems while making the house look good and sticking to the budget is the goal.

Q You’ve worked with a lot of clients over the years. What are some common misconceptions people have when it comes to home renovations? Renovating always costs more, takes longer, is messier and involves a lot more decisions than people expect. Managing a client’s expectations and guiding them through the process is one of the more important parts of the job. Renovating is a stressful event for a lot of people, but it doesn’t need to be!

Q When it comes to renovations, what will give you the biggest return on investment when it comes time to sell? That’s a tough one, and I think it depends on the buyer. The ‘market’ generally indicates that kitchens, bathrooms and finished basements add the most value. However, I’ve seen a lot of wasted resources go into renovating homes for sale with no net benefit. I think we all need to start prioritizing and putting more value on structural, mechanical and efficiency upgrades over countertops, flooring and tile. The makeup might make a house look good, but it’s what’s hiding inside the walls that holds the real value of a house.

VETERAN CONTRACTOR BRYAN BAEUMLER is celebrating his third season of HGTV’s Leave it to Bryan. HD&R chatted with the home expert and father of four to ask his opinion on everything from reno disasters to how he manages to do it all!

Q This marks your third season of Leave it to Bryan. What do you love about working on the show? I have a very atypical relationship with the homeowners when we’re filming. As a builder, it’s not every day I can say ‘Give me your money, give me your keys, and get out!’ That’s a lot of fun, I also really enjoy getting to know the homeowners and their homes! Every house is unique, so there’s always a lot of problem-solving and detective work when you’re renovating – finding solutions to unexpected problems keeps it interesting.

Q What is the biggest reno disaster you have had to deal with? I’ve seen so many disasters that

had a rule that I don’t have an office at home – when I’m home, I want to be Daddy, not the distracted guy whose kids are crying and I’m too busy on the phone. It’s really all about balance, and surrounding yourself with a great team of people. Sarah plays a huge part in keeping our offices running smoothly, making sure the kids are where they’re supposed to be, and just keeping me sane. Or insane, some days I’m not sure!

Decoding the code by MICHAEL NYIKES

Q

At a recent speaking engagement I had an audience member ask what mechanisms are in place for building codes to quickly respond to emerging issues?

A

An updated edition of the National Building Code (NBC) is typically released every five years (2000, 2005, 2010, etc). Provinces and territories typically adopt the majority of the NBC, but do make some amendments to suit regional needs before publishing them as provincial codes. This typically occurs within 2 years after the release of the latest NBC. Suggestions for code changes to the NBC are welcome from anyone at any time. A specific “Code Change Request Form” is available online at www.nationalcodes. nrc.gc.ca/eng/code_change_privacy_notice which can be used to formulate and submit a request. It is not necessary to be an industry “expert” to make this submission, however anyone submitting a code change request should ensure that it is clear and focuses on technical issues that are generic or widespread. The request should include:

›› the existing Code requirement, if applicable ›› the reasons for the change or addition ›› the proposed revision or new requirement 24 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS JAN - FEB 2014

›› supporting documentation, including cost/benefit data ›› the enforcement implications, and ›› the related Code objectives If an emerging issue that has large impacts (either positive or negative) arises, there can be an “interim change” of the NBC released. Such was the case in late 2012 when the NBC issued interim changes to accommodate new energy efficiency requirements for residential construction. A similar situation occurred in Alberta when interim changes to the ABC were issued in 2009 to address concerns regarding the potential spread of high intensity fires between residential structures. Future Decoding the Code columns will continue to answer readers’ questions about how the provincial building code affects their projects. Email your questions to me at decodingthecode@gmail.com. Be sure to include which city you live in, as well as your phone number in case I need to follow up with you.

SOME BOOMERS

just want to stay home by MARIE SOPROVICH Owner Aquarian Renovations

BABY BOOMERS ARE A WELL-EDUCATED, fiercely independent group of people who changed the cultural landscape of the world we know and will continue to do so as they head into retirement. The Baby Boomers drove Mustangs and made political and social protests the norm. They grew up on Elvis, the Beatles and rock and roll. They are a wild and outrageous generation who, for the most part, settled into being an extremely responsible group who now are more concerned about socially responsible issues than any generation before. More of them went to university than any other group in history and they have influenced every level of government as well as housing and labour markets the world over. They have impacted cultural trends, lifestyle changes, and have made a BEFORE lasting impression on our landscape. Now as they age, they are planning retirement their way. With thoughtful planning, attention to details and a knowledgeable contractor, the Boomers will create exactly what they want. Planning and shaping their future

housing needs and wants is exactly what Sheli Murphy and her husband Wayne contemplated as they considered what the next few decades might have in store for them. They thought about their living environment, the lifestyle they had and wanted to maintain and how they could best plan and take responsible action to create their future experience. Sheli, a leader in the healthcare field, knows all too well how the wave of aging Baby Boomers will forever be reshaping the health care system. Many people will be enjoying their later years and expecting the system, and the technology therein to support them in living longer and spending more of their happy golden years in their own homes. Sheli acknowledged, “When we were thinking about our home and our future in it, we recognized that some people are downsizing and buying south. We decided that really wasn’t us. We love where we live, the neighbourhood, and the location with the big dry pond park right out our back door that the city maintains for us! Our house holds a special place for us. It certainly is bigger that what two of us need but we’ve always been the host for family events and that is really important. Wayne loves to cook and we still gather our family for Sunday dinner. We take great pleasure in being that special gathering place for our family and so with this in mind, we wanted to create sustainable long-term housing for ourselves and provide the adequate space for the kind of care we may need as we grow older together. From that kind of thinking, we decided to renovate.” Sheli interviewed several renovators

BEFORE

before deciding to work with Aquarian. “I felt a sense of trust and personal connection with the ownership. We felt heard, and understood regarding the importance of what we wanted to create and why it was so important to us. We felt a mutual interest approach for our project and this commitment came from both sides. We could work with Aquarian as they shared our values and ideals. “ With that decision, the designing, planning, and renovation began. “There were lots of challenges and one of the first was in having to downsize our original plans because the cost was just too great.” Sheli reminisces. “Our original price point was to put the equity we had created over the years back into the renovation. Some things were not negotiable and we needed to clearly define what those were. I appreciated how options were presented and that we could choose which of these options best suited not only our budget but our vision for the space within the house. One of the first things we wanted to create was more square footage in the upstairs bedrooms for sitting space and to ensure that each bedroom had an ensuite so that if we ever needed to spend more time in our bedrooms as we aged, we would have the room and all the creature comforts we would need. We also wanted to have a view of our back yard from our upstairs space as it would delight us every time we looked out. We also wanted to make sure that the guest bedroom also had an ensuite so that it could become a suitelike room for a live-in care giver if and when we might need one. “ Sheli was actively involved in the design work and shared how 3D renderings brought clarity and excitement to the process. “When we were working on the design for the JAN - FEB 2014 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS 27

roof line we wanted to find a way to pull the new space with the turret idea and the gazebo into the rest of the house and when Tyler, your architectural designer, showed me the wrap around decks and the balcony I just fell in love with that idea and somehow Aquarian made it all work.” Paying particular attention to the roofline the Aquarian team unified the old and new roof seamlessly and complimented their craftsmanship with timeless cedar shakes. Widening the stairs and rooms gave Sheli peace of mind in knowing that she could get even a queen sized bed upstairs! The interior has new walls, new furnaces, plumbing, electrical, flooring, and cabinetry. After boosting the R-value of the exterior walls and updating some windows and doors, the exterior was finished with James Hardie siding thereby updating the look of the home without sacrificing its original

character. “The space feels new and grander. There are no limiting little spaces anymore.” Sheli articulates. “Wayne has the kitchen of his dreams and he makes good use of it.” The kitchen boasts of all kinds of built-ins, state-of-the-art ovens, and a special wine refrigeration area. The granite and eating bars are are so practical and inviting with lighting and ambiance to make it a place these Baby Boomers just want to hang out in. Screw piles were used to secure the additional new deck area and the overhead building space that was added on. “Having the screw piles as an option instead of putting a full basement and foundation under the new area was a significant cost savings option for us and it has worked very well.” Sheli recalled. Sheli continued to tell about some of the challenges that the renovation brought and how they were overcome. “The renovation started in September and who would know that the weather would turn so cold so shortly after the roof was taken off. The prolonged cold delivered by Mother Nature and the extra heating did cause problems with our oak flooring – but there again with productive conversation and solution thinking, we came to an agreement with Aquarian as to how we could amicably solve this problem. At the end of the day we were all very pleased with the renovation and the process that we were involved in. I find it very rewarding to have the opportunity to show case my house to show potential clients what Aquarian can do. People need to hear a good story not a perfect story. Your team always found a way to work through the bumps and the results are wonderful. We love our home.” And so, this family is set, like a bottle of fine wine – to age gracefully and within the complete comfort and practicality of their own home. Long live the Baby Boomers!

Start the new year with a new attitude by HELLEN BUTTIGIEG

EVERYONE HAS A LIST OF THINGS they’d like to accomplish, and a new year is the perfect time for a fresh start. Getting organized is a major resolution, and not an easy one to keep. It’s even difficult to figure out where to start on the road to becoming organized. Start by trying out these organizational tactics. Once you start, you’ll find your home (and your mind) free and clear to enjoy life’s simple pleasures – like putting your feet up with a hot cup of cocoa on a cold day.

Keep your New Year’s resolutions. If you’ve resolved to get organized in 2014 but are already feeling discouraged, detach from the results and focus on the process. We often fail to reach our goals simply because they were unrealistic in the first place. If it took 10 years for your clutter to accumulate, you can’t expect yourself to clear it all in a few days. The key is to do only what you can, but do it consistently. Just 15 minutes a day spent organizing will add up to seven hours a month and 84 hours a year! Commit to 15 minutes every day and make organizing part of your daily life rather than dwelling on how much more there is to do.

30 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS JAN - FEB 2014

IF YOU KEEP EVERY PAPER THAT ENTERS YOUR HOME BECAUSE YOU’RE AFRAID YOU MIGHT NEED IT SOMEDAY, HERE’S A WAY TO EASE THE FEAR.

Tackle quick tasks now. Adopt a “do it now” policy for anything that can be done in less than five minutes. For example, when a form needs to be filled out or a cheque has to be mailed, resist putting it off until the due date – do it now. This ensures that it won’t be forgotten or misplaced and frees up the mental energy that unfinished business consumes. Time-saving ways to shop. Pressed for time? Rather than wasting time running back and forth to the store, consider shopping online. The time and gas savings usually offset the cost of shipping. Some sites offer free delivery when you spend a minimum amount. To save costs, keep an on-going wish list and buy only when you have several items on the list. But make sure the site is secure before entering credit card information (look for the padlock in the browser window). Keep rooms tidy in less than two minutes. Items that don’t belong in a room are the main contributors to visual clutter. Get into the habit of removing “move elsewhere items” when you leave the room, and placing them on their way to where they do belong. You’ll be amazed at how effective this technique can be in keeping rooms tidy with minimal effort. Tidy doesn’t mean perfect. Organizing is not necessarily about how it looks, it’s about how it works. If you are not naturally neat, avoid storing everything behind closed doors. Not only can it make you feel ill at ease, it may also be virtually impossible for you to maintain that kind of system. Choose furniture pieces that provide visible storage instead, like a coffee table with shelves underneath. Keep the system low maintenance. If you never seem to get around to hanging your clothes on hangers, place some open bins in your closet.

Knowing that these papers won’t be tossed immediately and will be there “just in case” lessens the anxiety of letting them go. Store your sheets in sets in the linen closet. For each set, fold the flat sheet, the fitted sheet and one pillowcase. Place the set inside the remaining pillowcase. These tidy packages stack nicely on the shelves and make changing the sheets quick and easy. Fabric softener sheets tucked into the linen closet will keep bedding smelling fresh. Encourage filing, discourage piling. Keep extra file folders in the back of your filing drawer, and have a label-maker handy. Having these supplies ready to go will encourage you to quickly create new files as you need them rather than pile papers on top of your filing cabinet “just for now.” Accomplish more in your day by knowing your style. Understand your high/low energy periods and schedule your daily tasks accordingly – tough tasks during your high-energy periods and less-demanding tasks during the low ones. Also consider your work style when planning your day. You’ll be amazed at how much more you can accomplish by keeping your style in mind when planning your activities from day to day.

HELLEN BUTTIGIEG

Purging for “fraidy-cats.” If you keep every paper that enters your home because you’re afraid you might need it someday, here’s a way to ease the fear. Designate a temporary holding tank, a box or bin for papers you don’t need, which you’ll dump once a month.

Windows & Doors:

A PURCHASE TO BE MADE WELL, NOT OFTEN Replacing old windows with an eye for design and better performance by AL DUECK PRESIDENT AND AYNSLEY DUECK, MARKETING MANAGER, DUXTON WINDOWS & DOORS

AT YOUR HOME’S INCEPTION, THE WINDOWS WERE RICHLY COLOURED, well insulated, and contributed to the

character of the design as a whole. Fast forward 20 to 30 years and the windows are showing their age: rotting frames, seal failures, drafty, inoperable... How do you achieve the quality that you expect for your home? What is a good choice as opposed to a quick choice?

AS THE FIRST POINT OF CONTACT FOR ALL GUESTS, REPLACE AN OLD DOOR WITH A FRESH DESIGN, AND ADD A STATEMENT COLOUR, ADDED HEIGHT, OR A BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF HARDWARE. 32 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS JAN - FEB 2014

There are many different frame types and related price points available on the market. Most window systems now have pre-finished, low maintenance frames. The material of the frame, however, can impact both longevity of the product and flexibility in design. Materials with greater stability in very hot and very cold temperatures help protect the sealed unit, and pose less risk for seal failures. In terms of design, entry level windows typically limit the colour options to white on the interior and exterior. This can be challenging when the original window had a coloured exterior, and a natural wood interior. Going from “wood to white” windows can strip the exterior of its original character and make it fall flat. On the inside, a harsh white can make the frames stand out – when the true goal is highlighting an outdoor view. Consider options that lend flexibility for colour on both the exterior AND the interior. Recently, popular contemporary selections include black, metallic silver, and slate grey. These colours create a sleek frame, particularly for architectural window walls in additions or major renovations.

Alternatively, for more classic appeal, consider pairing a rich brown or taupe frame with a wood jamb extension. Species vary widely, from oak to hemlock to walnut, the latter becoming increasingly in demand. The entrance door can also have huge impact on both the value and the appearance of the home. As the first point of contact for all guests, replace an old door with a fresh design, and add a statement colour, added height, or a beautiful piece of hardware. Door manufacturers have been increasingly offering 8’ tall panels, with oversized sidelites and transoms to bring in natural light. Smooth panels, solid or full glass, have been very popular due to their simplicity, paired with multi-point locks and sleek, streamlined hardware. To improve the energy efficiency during the renovation, consider both the glass and frame type. Particularly in Edmonton’s environment, special attention should be given to thermal performance for the winter, and prevention of overheating for the summer. Glass selection can be tailored by orientation to address these unique needs. Not only can the heating and cooling loads be reduced, but consistent room temperatures can significantly improve comfort levels. In large

openings, the selection of high performance glass has an even bigger impact. Fortunately, Edmonton offers extraordinary access to “Made in Canada” solutions, an industry which has invented fiberglass frames, triple pane insulating glass, and wood windows from Western Canadian wood. There are excellent options available that can be compared from both an aesthetic and a performance point of view. Given the financial investment and the potential for an impressive result, select your windows well, not often. JAN - FEB 2014 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS 33

aware that heating and cooling systems should be inspected annually. This is best done before the fall or winter rush. But making sure the furnace is up to snuff is not all one should do. Getting your home’s air ducts cleaned is also a crucial step in ensuring that your family is living in a healthy, fresh air indoor environment. If you have pets or notice a dusty or unpleasant odor when your furnace comes on, it is advisable to consider getting your ducts professionally cleaned. The most effective way to clean air ducts and ventilation system is by having the contractor place the system under negative pressure through the use of a specialized truck-mounted vacuum. How often should they be cleaned? The answer is that it depends on the individual household, under normal circumstances every two to three years is advised. However, if there are any allergies in the family or you have pets you may want to consider having the ducts serviced more often. A comprehensive cleaning of all heating and cooling system components (furnace fan blower, furnace heat exchange, air conditioning coil, humidifier, ducts, etc.) will also help air circulation. If you have recently had or are having your furnace upgraded to a more efficient heating system, you should have your heating ducts cleaned. During any type of home renovation there may be a lot of dust from drywall, plaster or wood cutting projects and again a cleaning would be advisable. Be sure to allot three to four hours of time for the duct cleaners to do the job. Mention any other items that could require cleaning as well, such as your air conditioner coil, or dryer vent. Now that the ducts have been cleaned, maintaining cleaner indoor air can be attained by using full-time air purification equipment such as an HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator) or high-efficiency air filtration (hybrid systems). An HRV allows fresh air to enter while exhausting an equal amount of

have your dryer venting cleaned as well. By maintaining clean dryer venting you reduce the risk of fire, save money on energy costs and prolong the life of your dryer. Good air quality in your home is something that will not only make you feel good, but will also make your home environment comfortable for family members with allergies and sensitivities to dust or other airborne particles. stale air and recovering the heat or cool from the exhaust side and using it to warm or cool fresher air coming in. Air is filtered before being redistributed in the house. Also now available are Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERV’s), which return not only heat energy, but moisture to help humidify the home if required. If you suffer from allergies or asthma you can add a HEPA (hybrid) filtration system to the HRV and have fresh, clean air. When you are having your ducts cleaned it is also a good idea to
