Change is good

T

he home improvement industry has seen monumental change over the past two decades. The number of new innovations and decor products is almost limitless. Compare for a moment what the average kitchen looked like in the 1950s, 60s or 70s, with how kitchens look and operate today. Layout, technology, energy efficiency and design have all seen significant improvements. More and more of us are seeking to introduce our aging homes to what is available today. Several questions inevitably arise. Our first question may be, ‘what is the first step?’ Preplanning is an essential early step in this process. Take some time to determine what it is you wish to achieve. What is the purpose of your renovation? For example, it may be to renovate your kitchen in order to improve functionality, appearance, and layout. It may be an energy upgrade (insulation, toilets, windows, furnace, etc.) so that you can lessen your footprint on the environment and lower your monthly energy costs. Create a list of ‘must-haves’ and another list of ‘would be nice but not essential.’ Itemize as much detailed information as you can. Now, when you meet with your renovator or designer, you will be able to provide them with the information they need to start planning your projects. Another question you may be asking is, ‘who should I hire to work on my home?’ Reading this magazine will most definitely help. Our pages are filled with editorial and ads that feature local renovators, designers and suppliers. These are the professionals that can be trusted to help you achieve the changes you are looking for. Do not attempt to take the cheap ‘short cut’ approach. Hiring an amateur contractor may very well end up costing you time and money. Working with experienced, reputable professionals will ensure that you have a positive experience and that your renovation goals are achieved.

here is no doubt that entertaining at home has changed. While dreams of wining and dining with a large group of family and friends maybe be put on pause for the time being, a thoughtfully planned, small group dining experience is a great way to socialize. You’ll want to keep everything on an intimate scale, staying within your bubble, with lots of room for everyone to feel comfortably apart. Here are some easy tips for creating a dining space that is entertaining ready!

Table talk Whether you choose round, square or rectangular, your dining table should comfortably fit in your space, match your home’s aesthetic and stay on budget. It’s important to measure the table-to-wall distance so that diners can get out of their seats easily. The

general rule of thumb is to leave 42 to 48 in. between the table and the walls. We don’t often think of a tabletop as loud or quiet, but metal and glass tend to amplify noise, whereas wood tends to absorb noise for a more comfortable dining experience. And, the best way to keep guests at the table is with comfortable chairs, so it’s a good idea to test out seating options before you buy.

Layering isn’t just for fashion To design an entertaining dining experience, think about layers when you’re choosing textiles for the table, the dishware, decor and lighting. The tabletop is the base of your canvas. If it’s beautiful, show it off and consider

tip One of the most versatile and stylish items in home decor is the bar cart. A rolling bar cart can be your busboy! It can help you serve courses and load up dishes when clearing the table. SKOGSTA DINING TABLE IN ACACIA. $679. IKEA.CA using chargers rather than placemats. Chargers tend to add a sense of formality, and they’re easier to clean up after use. Use your best dishware and serving ware. I’m a big fan of using the “good” dishes year-round. If you enjoy them on special occasions, why not treat yourself and bring them out more often. Add multiple lighting styles and brightness to your dining space to help set the mood. Lighting on dimmers is a great way to control lighting. If you have a centre chandelier over the table, keep the light low and add candles on the table.

An easy decor trick is to put batterypowered LED candles into a large glass vase or add in seasonal items or greenery for an extra special touch.

Enjoy entertaining Especially during these unprecedented times, you want your guests to feel extra special and pampered. But, don’t get caught up in the formalities of being a host. Prepare as much as you can beforehand. Set your table the night before and pre-make any apps and desserts. That way, you ensure you truly enjoy what entertaining is all about – being together.

ngoing professional development is a key piece of what differentiates a Manitoba Home Builders’ Association member from other residential construction companies in Manitoba. MHBA builder and renovator members keep up to date with the newest information and trends, the latest best practices, and newest building technologies that help ensure their work is of the highest quality. Traditionally, the MHBA’s annual Housing Forum and Building Trade Show provides MHBA builder and renovator members with a full day of education and training sessions. Unfortunately, hosting a large educational Forum and Trade Show isn’t an option this year so the MHBA has had to find an alternative format to provide MHBA members with the professional development sessions that are always the key focus of the MHBA Housing Forum. Instead, this year the MHBA is hosting a virtual Housing Forum webinar series throughout the month of November which will provide MHBA builder and renovator members with the latest information and best practices regarding residential construction. Improving compliance through problem solving during construction, emergency preparedness on worksites, subtrade safety, and integrating air tightness into home design and construction are just some of the sessions being made available online to MHBA members through this year’s virtual Housing Forum. MHBA members can also attend a session on the state of Winnipeg’s housing market as well

as information sessions that share marketing resources tips and expertise to help businesses deal with the COVID pandemic. In addition to the annual Housing Forum, the MHBA provides ongoing education sessions throughout the year and continually shares the latest in industry best practices and information with our membership. The Housing Forum and our educational sessions are a key component of our Master Builder and Master Renovator certification programs. The MHBA Master Builder and Master Renovator certification programs allow builders and renovators to demonstrate compliance with high standards established by a credible third party. The program ensures an ongoing commitment to continuing education by requiring all certified builders and renovators to enroll in suitable courses related to building and business practice, so you can have peace of mind that your new home or renovations are in the best hands. A minimum number of hours of professional development must be completed every year to keep the designation current. Credit for professional development can be earned either through attending seminars offered in the MHBA’s continuing education calendar and attending other approved business sessions. MHBA builders and renovators are committed to professional development and being up to date with the latest trends in residential construction. Our members build to the highest standards and are continually integrating the latest industry standards into their work. So, when you see the MHBA logo, you know you are dealing with a company that is dedicated to quality. You can learn more about MHBA builders and renovators at www.homebuilders.mb.ca. Come on in! CREATE A FRONT ENTRANCEWAY THAT IS WELCOMING AND INSPIRING by JENNIFER BACKSTEIN

F

irst impressions are everything. At first glance, what does your home’s entrance say about? Is it inviting, intriguing, inspiring? If it isn’t all of those things, it’s falling short of what it could and should be. As a designer, my goal is to bring the homeowner’s personality to life in their home – even the entranceway. Historically, many homes were designed with a vestibule separate from the other living areas, serving as a waiting area for visitors, a place to store coats and boots and a way to reduce heat loss from inside the home. Over the years, the “front foyer”

14

Home Decor & Renovations | Dec. 2020-Jan. 2021

has evolved, and many modern homes are designed with an entranceway that opens into its living areas. Since you can see this area from the living areas, and vice versa, it requires an added level of design consideration. Here are some ways to maximize the modern home entranceway when it comes to style and function.

Foreshadow your home’s aesthetic What is the overall style of the space? Perhaps it’s classic, contemporary, eclectic or something else entirely. Whatever your preferred aesthetic, the entryway is a great place to echo similar elements to hint at what’s inside and ensure a cohesive look and feel throughout the house.

my tip:

TWO MUST-HAVES FOR AN ENTRYWAY ARE A MIRROR AND A SPOT TO SIT DOWN. YOU’LL APPRECIATE A SEAT WHEN YOU’RE LACING

UP YOUR SHOES, AND INCORPORATING A PIECE OF FURNITURE, EVEN A SMALL ONE, CAN MAKE THIS SPACE FEEL LIKE PART OF THE LIVING AREA. THE MIRROR IS SELF-EXPLANATORY, FOR ONE LAST LOOK BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT FOR YOUR DAY. HOWEVER, A MIRROR WILL ALSO AMPLIFY THE NATURAL LIGHT IN THIS SPACE, GIVING YOUR HOME A BRIGHT AND SPACIOUS FEEL ON ENTRY.

Make a statement Your entranceway is the first impression people will get of your home (and perhaps you), so make it count. Choose a statement piece that wows, such as a bold floor tile, a vibrant stained glass window, or a favourite piece of art. Remember, if it “speaks to you” in some way, it will appeal to guests as well. Just ensure your selections convey the right message. A professional designer can help if you’re challenged in this regard.

flustered and looking for the exit. Outfit your entrance to accommodate your lifestyle and all the baggage that comes with it. A well-organized closet with doors is ideal; however, consider adding shelves, hooks or other creative solutions to keep that mess under wraps.

Incorporate function

Let there be light

Your home’s entranceway is where you and your family land when you come home – briefcases, backpacks, shopping bags, groceries, coats, boots, the dog and all. Without the proper functional elements, this can quickly become a disheveled dropzone that leaves you feeling cramped,

Look up. What do you see? If you have a high ceiling or a two-storey entrance, enhance its sense of grandeur with a great, large-scale light fixture. Ensure the fixture is suspended at the right height, the scale is key. The rule of thumb is the fixture should have two to three inches for

each foot of ceiling height. A 16-ft. foyer can handle a fixture that is 32 to 48 in. When installing your fixture, consider the height at which it should hang. For extremely high ceilings, the general rule is to leave six ft. between the ceiling and the top of the fixture. For a foyer with low ceilings, opt for a ceiling-mounted fixture versus a pendant or chandelier. Whatever you choose, make it fabulous. Your entranceway is one of the most important rooms in your home. Don’t let it become an afterthought. If you’re designing your home from scratch or giving it a much-needed update, bring this space to the forefront and let it shine!

HAMMERDOWN CONSTRUCTION DELIVERS TOP-NOTCH QUALITY AND SAFETY Unlike many homeowners, who weigh the pros and cons of moving versus renovating to find the home of their dreams, Craig and Kara had no such indecision. Located in North Kildonan, their 1300 ft. bungalow is sturdily constructed and after living there for 15 years, the couple was satisfied they had a keeper. Craig informs that the house was built in 1959 and doing some research, he uncovered that the original homebuilder was known for building very structurally sound houses. “Plus the surrounding amenities including being close to the river, a park and a small school for our 2 kids, we thought it was best to stay here and continue to do upgrades to the house.” The couple was raring to go having signed the contract with Tyson Hiebert, owner/manager of Hammerdown Home Renovations and General Construction Inc. and to make their plans of an open concept kitchen and dining room a reality. Then COVID-19 entered the picture and the process needed to pivot. Craig explains that kitchen demolition was already underway when the pandemic hit and “we wanted to make sure to create a safe space for Hammerdown to nexthome.ca 17

The dividing wall between kitchen and dining room made way for a counter peninsula appointed with stools for casual meals and opening up the dining room and living room for easy conversation.

AFTER work and they wanted to do the same for us. They actually downsized their crew so there wouldn’t be as many people in the kitchen by not overlapping the trades as they typically would do. Hammerdown did an exceptional job of working around the pandemic ensuring that their trades felt safe and comfortable, and for us, making sure they had the space to work without my family coming into proximity as well.” The renovation included bringing down 2 non-load bearing walls to create the open expanse that Craig and Kara wanted. The dividing wall between kitchen and dining room made way for a counter peninsula appointed with stools for casual meals and opening up the dining room and living room for easy conversation. Another wall by the back door was eliminated and glass divider stair rails augmented the spacious effect. Removing walls resulted in a re-jig of the kitchen layout that included additional cabinetry on an unused wall to increase the cabinet capacity by nearly 25 percent. Working with Hammerdown’s designer made choosing finishes easy for Craig and Kara. Quartz was the material of choice for kitchen countertops. Hard maple slab cabinets in a satin Slate finish and bronze hardware pulls and Champagne bronze kitchen faucet were chosen. “We didn’t want to go too modern in our choices, because we were mindful to match with the rest of the house’s décor,” says Kara. 18 Home Decor & Renovations | Dec. 2020-Jan. 2021

Aside from the strict COVID-19 protocols, Tyson says that the challenge for this project was to have the kitchen still fit in with the rest of the house. “The house has a lot of character and Craig and Kara didn’t want there to be a disconnect in style and finishes.” Tyson recognizes that there is a new reality when it comes to home renovation these days. “We’ve been offering virtual estimates. Not everyone might want us in their homes right now, but they are looking to have the work done when the situation is better so we are ready to respond once the time comes.” For more details on Hammerdown Construction, visit hammerdown.ca or phone 204.793.0500 nexthome.ca 19

Financing your renovation

O

nce you have decided to renovate our home, you need to determine how you will pay for it, and how much you are willing and able to spend. If you intend to borrow money for your renovation, it’s a good idea to talk to your lender before you start making firm plans. Find out how much you can borrow and what options are available to you, and get pre-approval for your loan. Then you know how much you have to spend and are better prepared for detailed discussions with your renovator. Even if you intend to pay cash from savings or the sale of assets, consider talking with your lender first. You may do better by borrowing the funds for your project. Here are some of the options for financing your renovation project. Ŕ 1 &340/"- -*/& 0' $3&%*5. This is one of the most popular financing options for smaller renovations and is also ideal for on-going or long-term renovations. With one application, you establish a revolving credit line that you can access at any time, up to your approved limit. An itemized monthly statement lets you keep track of your renovation expenses, and you only pay interest on the fund you use. As you pay off your balance, you can reborrow the unused funds without reapplying. And you’ll always enjoy a rate that’s lower than most personal loans and credit cards. You may be able to borrow up to 90% of the value of your home, less the outstanding balance of any existing mortgage. This option allows you to take advantage of mortgage rates, which are often substantially lower than credit card and loan rates. Loans of 80% or more of the appraised value of your home must be insured against borrower default; the mortgage insurance premium can be pad upfront or added to the mortgage amount. Lenders suggest that you set aside a certain percentage of your renovation funds to cover items not included in your contract with the renovator. Once the work is underway, homeowners often discover that they would like to add things, such as extra or upgraded features, furniture, new appliances and window coverings. With a separate fund, you can make those decisions easily, without having to renegotiate with your lender. Courtesy of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association

Has the pandemic indefinitely changed the way you live and dress? Casual wear has become de rigueur, with pyjama and sweatpants breaking sales records this year. And, with so many working from home and spending more time inside, many homeowners are rethinking how they can make their spaces more organized, functional and relaxed. We have entered a new age of comfort. When the outside world seems daunting, we want our homes to be a source of solace, our clothes to be unrestrictive and unapologetic. As the winter bears down on us and restrictions change weekly, sheltering in place should be a time to slow down and surround ourselves with life’s little pleasures. It could be mastering the art of sour dough bread, curling up by a fire with family or snuggling in a super soft throw – whatever comfort means to you, embrace it and let it carry you through the pandemic.

getting started

We need another

bathroom S WAYNE SAGE

econd only to the renovation request of “we would like a larger kitchen, let’s take down this wall and open the space up and lose the nonfunctioning dining room,” comes the “we need a larger or another bathroom in our house, but we have no room,” request. Well, the good news is that maybe you do have the room! In a lot of the homes we work on these days, which were built back in the sixties and seventies or earlier, the rooms, the closets and the bathrooms were relatively small by today’s standards. To the untrained eye it may look impossible to enlarge the bathroom or ensuite, but with a little creativity that simply isn’t the case. If you were willing to give up the unused dining room to have the open concept for your now beautifully flowing kitchen, are you not willing to give up that empty spare bedroom full of boxes, unused clothes and papers for your new bathroom? If you have or can picture the standard floorplan going down the hallway – master on the left, small three-piece bathroom in the middle and standard bedroom on the right. Let’s open all this up to create a large master, a large ensuite and a fairly decent walk-in closet by repurposing this space. The enlarged bathroom can then be dual functioning as a main bath from one hallway access point and an ensuite from the master bedroom access point, allowing privacy either way with locking doors.

28 Home Decor & Renovations | Dec. 2020-Jan. 2021

This flow through design would allow you to walk from the master into the ensuite and then through to the walk-in closet to get dressed. All accomplished by just giving up that unused bedroom! Another great space saving idea, if you’re still limited with this new area and you really want a nice shower and stand-alone tub, is to create what we call a wet area where the soaker tub actually sits inside the shower area. This saves a tremendous amount of space and gives you both features, and it could also be used as a steam bath area, should your budget allow. The point here is that there are many ways to use square footage and sometimes when you have lived in a space for so long, it’s hard to imagine it any other way. This is just another reason to use a Professional design build firm or a Professional interior designer to open your eyes to the possibilities you have never thought of. Stay safe and stay well. HOME sweet home

HOW TO ACHIEVE COMFORTABLE YET STYLISH LIVING FOR THE FAMILY HOME by EUGENIA TRIANDOS AND KORINA KHAMIS.

T

he colder months call for a warm-up indoors. This will be more relevant than ever this winter, as we increasingly seek the cosy comforts of home, regardless of what’s happening in the world around us. What is warmth as it relates to home, beyond the thermostat reading? To many of us, it’s family time, a sense welcome and cosy comforts at every turn. Now, pack these wonderful things between four walls, for what promises to be one of the season’s – and the foreseeable future’s – hottest trends. So, how do you give a house a “homey” look and feel? We recently

designed this family-friendly home (pictured) that is, by all accounts, “home sweet home” personified. Here’s how we brought this look home, and tips on how you can, too.

Intimate layout Perhaps the most significant element of a family home is its layout. It defines how you live in the space and how you interact with others. An open-concept interior is conducive to social and communal activities but is also preferred for its space efficiency, making it a common denominator in many new builds and renovations. A challenge with open-concept interiors is a lack of intimacy and focus. Transform that vast, vacant shell by highlighting function and style within defined zones. Typically, these include a kitchen, sitting/conversation area, office/homework space, a dining/entertaining area, and hopefully a reading/resting corner to put your feet up at the end of a long day. If you’re limited on space, take note

that our zones are multi-purpose. Keep this in mind when balancing your needs with the realities of your workable area.

Layered lighting Lighting is that looming background element that can strengthen (or weaken) all your other design efforts. Ambience begins with lighting, so if your goal is to create a warm, familyfriendly environment, your lighting must reflect that. Opt for bulbs that lean to the warmer side of the spectrum. And dimmers are a must. There are three types of lighting in every lighting plan. Ambient lighting is the overall light in a room, in the form of natural and overhead lighting. Task lighting is functional and is intended to illuminate specific activities, such as a reading corner, desktop and countertop. Last but not least, accent lighting is purely decorative and acts as a highlighter, such as spotlights focussed on artwork, wall sconces or track lighting.

Mixed finishes

Final focus

Building on the layering strategy above, mixing materials, textures, and finishes is an effective way to achieve warmth and a casual vibe. Combine wood, leather, concrete and natural weaves to bring depth to an otherwise neutral space. Finish the look with a burst of colour, such as a vibrant piece of artwork or a rug, which can unify these various elements. Textiles are a natural way to crank the heat when the winter comes. The patterns and materials are easy to swap with the seasons and they make a big visual and tactile impact. The best part? It is an affordable change!

Choose an impactful focal point. If you have a fireplace, we have three words for you. Do. It. Up. This is a physically warming feature that brings together family and friends as a focal point for warm conversation, if not to temper those winter-time chills. We recently brought new life to an old fireplace by cladding it with a beautiful Compac Unique Calcatta slab that we then echoed in the adjoining dining room bar. The fireplace became an instant focal point to anchor the eye and attract the fireflies of the family. “Home is as much a feeling as it is a place. With thoughtful design, you will feel a warm embrace every time you walk through the door.

DESIGNER JO ALCORN SHARES AN INSPIRING HOME GYM RENOVATION THAT WILL GET YOU MOTIVATED FOR ALL YOUR 2021 FITNESS GOALS

W

hen I found out my clients wanted to do a home gym renovation, I was ecstatic. With all the restrictions due to the pandemic, I thought it would be the perfect time to show these homeowners how to maximize their space with a home gym tailored to their needs. nexthome.ca 35

In this space, weight training and yoga were the two primary activities. With this in mind, I divided the space into zones. The first was the yoga zone. I wanted this space to be serene, relaxing and warm. To achieve the feel I was looking for, I chose a fireplace from Dimplex. The company’s Ignite linear electric fireplace was the perfect fit because it gives off heat when you want to cosy up for some downward dog, yet, if you want to turn the heat off while working out, you can also use it with just the flame feature. What gym is complete without a television? I chose the Q8G Quantum Dot TV from Hisense for this space.

The image on the screen is so life-like you’ll think the yoga instructor is in the room with you. This Android TV is user friendly, and you can easily

stream thousands of movies, shows or YouTube videos while working out. Now for the weight training zone. I wanted to distinguish the two

areas, so I created an architectural component by adding wood slates to the ceiling. I had the contractor cut the floor and ceiling slates on an angle to create even more of a visual appeal, playing up lines and focal points. Having the pipes exposed created that raw industrial look I wanted. To achieve this look, I worked with Metrie to build a custom slatted wood ceiling. I used a two-in. oak flat stock boards, leaving a small gap between each slat to achieve my industrial look. I didn’t want to cut any corners in this space, so I also

added in Metrie’s vintage industrial baseboards and casing, plus a door with black hinges and door handle. Sometimes, it’s these small details that make the biggest impact. Adding music to your workout is such a must. The Sonos Move and Beam gives studio-level vibes, and the high-quality sound will keep you motivated to get in that last rep. They were super easy to set up: Download the Sonos app, connect to your WiFi network and press play. As a bonus, the Move is a portable speaker that works on both WiFi and Bluetooth, so if you want to cool down outside, you can take your tunes with you. I wanted to make sure this space was clean, tidy and that clutter wouldn’t take away from the joy of their workout. I worked with Tailored Living to create a beautiful built-in custom storage cabinet. It has uppers and lowers for equipment storage and counter space to house essentials such as water bottles and speakers. Now for the finishing touches. I wanted to create a dramatic effect with

the artwork. I worked with Posterjack to create larger than life inspiration prints. I went to Etsy and bought some gym inspired digital artwork. All I had to do then was upload the images at Posterjack, pick the exact frame style and size of print I wanted and… voila! Art complete. Finally, what people might not think about having in a gym are tools to help you with post-workout soreness. This gym is meant for challenging workouts and with that comes sore muscles. I love Rub A535 products to help manage pain. Not only did we need this when building the gym (DIYs and home renovations come with their own set of muscle soreness) but post-workout, it’s perfect for managing pain and muscle fatigue.

LIFESTYLE BLOG HARLOW & THISTLE SHARES FIVE TIPS TO ENJOY YOUR HOME THIS WINTER – THE DANISH WAY

T

here’s nothing better than curling up in a cosy blanket, in front of a fire and watching the snow fall. It’s just so hygge. No, that wasn’t a sneeze. Hygge, pronounced “hew-ge” is the Danish word for a mood of cosiness, comfort and contentment. The hygge concept is all about enjoying the natural elements within the living spaces of your home. Don’t worry, this isn’t one of those design trends that will set you back thousands of dollars. It’s easy to do, and you might already be doing it and not even know it. Here are five tips to hygge your home:

TIP 2: DECORATE WITH CANDLES Pillar, tea, long, skinny, if you have candles get them out, group them together and spread them out throughout your home. A cluster of tea candles around your tub or modern candlestick holders on a side table are just a few examples where candles can add a modern hygge feeling to your home. Ochre VELVET CUSHION. $39.99. TIP 1: THE EDIT Keep things on display that have meaning and make you feel good; everything else can be put in storage or given away. This disciplined approach sounds ruthless but will do wonders for your well-being and contentment. A good edit will help declutter your space and help create that hygge state of mind. Design in the time of Quarantine A 2020 REFRESH

by LYNN FENWICK,

Winnipeg has seen an increase in the amount of home projects this year. With everyone spending significantly more time in their homes people are rethinking their spaces – not only for a refresh, but to improve the functionality as well. The home has become more than just a home this year. It quickly had to convert into an all-purpose space – an office, gym, social setting, restaurant, spa and more… We have heard from a lot of clients just wanting a change in their home. They are bored of the colour of their walls. They are tired of the same cabinets and fixtures that they’ve had for years. They want the excitement 40

of something new. Many of us just want a change of scenery and want something that we can control when everything else is uncertain. We’re right there with you and are more than happy to help. We’ve created a quick list to help inspire your next COVID refresh. EARTHY TONES

Gone are the days of the modern grey-black-white colour schemes. We have moved on from the cool sterile trend and are welcoming back warm and fresh earthy tones. People are wanting their spaces to be more casual, comfortable and cozy. If we do

see a grey colour scheme, we almost always see it paired with wood tones to add that bit of warmth. We’re also seeing more plants and greenery used as design features throughout the house. Having a lot of greenery is a good stimulant for overall wellbeing and a great way to keep your house feeling fresh (with added health benefits). THE HOME OFFICE

Possibly the most significant change in the home was the need for a fully functional home office. We suggest using a room that can be closed off to block off noise and add privacy

(if possible). Ensure you have a comfortable and ergonomic chair and a desk that is large enough to spread out your work. We also suggest adding more storage and don’t be afraid to use your walls for storage as well! Wall shelves can be decorative but functional as well to keep clutter minimal if you don’t have enough space for filing cabinets. PLAY WITH PAINT

A tried and true way to easily reinvent your space. We still find people are afraid of colour – “what if it’s too much? What if I don’t like it when it’s done? What if I pick the wrong colour?” All of these are valid concerns, but people often overlook the fact that it’s just paint! It can easily and inexpensively be altered and repainted if it’s not quite right. We always suggest to clients to buy a small sample can of paint (or a few to compare!) before the commit to a paint colour. Paint can be tricky and it can look different in each room at different times of the day. Paint a few patches in each room and look at it at different times of the day to ensure it’s the correct colour to pick. We’re always trying new things with paint too! We love colour blocking to add dramatic effect. We often will paint a bold colour block around a feature furniture piece or artwork to create a focal point. If you have high ceilings, try painting the ceiling a different colour!

Use decorative wall sconces instead of lamps on your bedside tables for a more unique look.

PARTIAL PAINTED KITCHENS

If replacing your cabinets isn’t in your budget, add a fun colour on the island or your lower cabinets. This will be more labour intensive, but will completely transform your kitchen without having to remove all of your cabinets. We’re seeing less all white kitchens and more combinations of painted cabinets with wood cabinet or shelving details. OPEN SHELVING

Speaking of kitchen shelving, we are loving open shelves! This also doesn’t have to be a huge expense. If you have an open spot in your kitchen, try

If you have an open spot in your kitchen, try adding a couple of decorative shelves.

sizes of wood to create dimensional geometric designs on walls. Adding thin strips of painted MDF to drywall adds a unique detail to any wall with minimal cost. adding a couple of decorative shelves. You can buy these inexpensively from IKEA, Amazon, Wayfair, etc. If you want a more cohesive look, replace one set of upper cabinets in your kitchen with decorative shelves!

and there are less restrictions with clearances. Mantles and TVs can be installed closer overtop of an electric fireplace so your TV can be installed at a more comfortable height if your space isn’t very deep.

WALL SCONCES – THEY’RE BACK!

STORAGE, STORAGE, STORAGE

Although wall sconces aren’t the best for general lighting, they are becoming more and more popular as a decorative feature. We’ve designed fireplaces and shelving around specific wall sconces as a main feature of a concept. This is a great way to highlight specific shelves or items. Use decorative wall sconces instead of lamps on your bedside tables for a more unique look. If adding hardwired wall sconces isn’t an option, try a plug-and-play option to get the same effect!

With spaces in your home needing to be more multi-purpose these days, we’re finding the need for more and more storage. Some rooms will need to function as two or three different types of spaces and the easiest way to convert seamlessly from one purpose to another is to have adequate storage for each task. Tall, decorative storage units to house all items for each purpose will keep things organize and minimize anxiety-causing clutter everywhere. We love designing unique storage units made specifically for our clients’ individual needs.

ELECTRIC FIREPLACES

Not only are electric fireplaces less expensive than gas fireplaces, they are also a lot easier to work with. They are easier to install and you have more versatility with the types of materials applied around the appliance

TEXTURED WALLS

Wainscoting has made a comeback in residential design, but it is not the only dimensional material being applied to walls these days. We are using different

PAIR NEW WITH OLD

If you are the type of person who likes to shop for accessories and accent furniture in person rather than online, you may come into a bit of an issue with stock levels. We noticed throughout the summer that many stores have low or backordered stock. This is a great time to think outside the box and play around with pairing items you already have with new items you may find. Luckily eclectic mixes are very trendy right now! You may also want to try refurbishing timeless wooden furniture pieces – try painting an existing piece of furniture in a bold or fresh new colour to give it new life. At Fenwick & Company Interior Design we are in this with you. We know how stressful these days are and we want to help you create a space that is safe and comfortable for you where you can live your new daily routine with ease. These tips are a great start, but if you would like more tailored design ideas give us a call! We follow the strictest COVID guidelines to ensure safe design consultations whether they are in person or over zoom. We would love to help you rejuvenate your home so you can feel comfortable and refreshed in your place of refuge.

This year Duxton Windows & Doors is launching an all-new platform for bringing homeowners into the showroom… virtually! “Many homeowners are choosing to renovate their homes this year,” comments Chris King of Prairie Windows & Doors. “With so many people working remotely, people want to make their home more comfortable, and more of an oasis. They want great insulation, natural light, and really nice-looking finishes from their windows and doors.” Normally, when a homeowner notices it’s time to replace windows and doors, a great starting point is to visit the local home show: wander the different exhibitor booths, get 44

MEETS FUNCTION

Every once in a while, an amazing opportunity comes your way. This is how the designer at For Space Sake felt when she was asked to design a spectacular dressing room for a very special home. Her inspiration was to blend modern art deco into a heritage home.

MAXIMIZING SPACE Maximizing the space was one of the prerequisites in this design. The cabinets reach up to meet the double stacked crown molding. Inset lighting and mirrored doors add that touch of glamour that results in creating a dream dressing room!

SHOE CABINET Shoes are one of your most important accessories. Opening the doors to this cabinet is like walking into a shoe salon and having all of your favorite shoes on display.

SOFT CLOSE SLIDES When designing a space such as this one, it’s all in the details. The dovetail drawers add a touch of quality as do the soft close slides. You will appreciate this every time you open a drawer.

CABINET JEWELRY The handles become what we refer to as the jewelry on the doors and drawers. These handles in a bone and antique brass finish were specially selected to reflect the modern art deco theme.

WITH Colin & Justin by SARA DUCK

Celebrity designers Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan spark serious wanderlust with their new book Escapology: Modern Cabins, Cottages and Retreats. Twentyfour homes from around the world are beautifully captured and accompanied with informative design profiles which will help you create your own personalized escape – whether you are building, renovating or redecorating. We recently caught up with the designer duo to find out more.

What does “escapology” mean to you? Escapology, to us, is the social science of “getting away.” In its essence, it’s all about retreating to a special place – a cottage, vacation home or cabin – to decompress. It’s all about shaking off the stresses of our fast spinning world to unwind in a peaceful spot, often with friends, family and loved ones. Now, perhaps more than ever, escape is something about which people dream, and upon which they focus. Few would disagree that life, over the last few months, has changed for almost all of us. With this in mind, we hope escapology will appeal to everyone who’s focused on getting back on track and settling back into an easier way of life. In short – it’s time to reset. And time to relax. And time to love.

What was the inspiration for your book? We’ve worked in home design for more than 20 years – across various continents – in TV, print media and private commission. We’ve always loved what we do, and positively relish

every opportunity we’re afforded to beautify real homes for real people. Ten years ago, however, we started to specialize in vacation homes. We actively seek clients in rural spaces. We adore the rural real estate landscape and felt super driven to share its highlights with the world.

What process did you go through to select each property? When we landed the publishing deal for Escapology, we were excited to share with our viewers, readers and international fan base as many beautiful escapes as possible. But of course, there’s a limit to the number of inspirational homes that can be seamlessly merged into one book. With much help, we eventually arrived at 24 homes. Then the process of selecting the best rooms from each house started. Each property showcases around six zones, so in total, there are approximately 150 spaces, lavishly spread across 236 beautiful pages. Creating Escapology has been little short of joyous: As lovers of the rural idyll, it’s been our

pleasure to curate such a stunning inventory of beautiful abodes to inspire and excite, we hope, in equal measure.

What elements do you love about the Park Corner Barn space? Ah, this is such a beautiful cottage. Located in Oxfordshire, UK, it’s an 18th-century brick and flint barn conversion; to us, the very essence of a modern rustic escape. The wooden beam work can only be described as breathtaking as it intersects and sails majestically above a sea of white painted walls and wide-planked floorboards. And the natural light that floods the space is astounding; the barn’s owner, and his team of architects and contractors, imbued the project with an exciting feel, one that allows it to seamlessly transition from its agricultural past, into its current residential iteration.

You write about the different types of cabins and cottages, what does your ideal cottage include? Our ideal cottage style combines natural wood finishes, layered with white painted walls, jet-toned fenestration, and loads of texture. We love the contrast that happens when these layers are front and forward in any of our schematics. And of course, comfort is paramount – we never take that for granted. Our typical scheme may employ toffee toned hide upholstery, thick woven textiles, rough-hewn wood furniture and a

anywhere.”

compendium of ceramic accessories. But don’t forget, the topography is everything. Find us a property with towering trees and commanding elevations of craggy Canadian shield granite and we’ll be happy.

How can homeowners bring that cabin/cottage feel into their homes? There’s no doubt about it: The Canadian retail sector is awash with inventory that amply references the great outdoors. That whole rustic look has become wildly popular. Take, for example, our product line (available in stores such as HomeSense, Marshalls and Winners) you’ll find heavy weave textiles that would look every bit as relevant on a condo sofa as they would a cottage sofa. As always – it’s all about balance. And texture. And

wood detailing. You might be in a townhome, a suburban backsplit or a highrise condo, but with a little planning, you could be anywhere.

If you could escape to any destination over the winter and hygge, where would you go? We’re all about Drag Lake in Haliburton. It’s a vast undertaking – perhaps our most ambitious to date – but we’re utterly in love with the place and, indeed, its potential. It’s super cosy with acres of glass, a roaring log fire, squashy sofas and mountains of books. Perched, as it is, 20 stone steps from the water, the cottage is shaded by a copse of pine, hemlock and spruce trees. It’s a work in progress, sure, but one which we hope to complete within the next 12 to 18 months.

hen given the mandate to stylize an interior space following a modern glamour design direction, it is best to understand what represents “modern” and “glamour.” Today, modern decor means clean lines and a monochromatic colour palette complemented with glass and metal accents. The glamour counterpart is represented by layering rich textures, lavish details and

luxurious accents, in this case with an Art Deco flair. Let me share with you a newly designed home by House of Layth that personifies the modern glamour style.

First impression As you enter the home, you’re welcomed by a marble floor inlay, composed of an oversized herringbone-patterned mosaic tile, framed with a darker contrast stone and finished with polished chrome

trim. The simplicity of the layering and scale factors bring forth a modern sensibility but with a hint of art deco glamour.

Dining room drama The dramatic look of the dining room resonates from several carefully orchestrated design elements. The first being the ceiling height transition, from a single- to a double-height interior, separated by a framed archway.

The second is the expansive wall trim that follows an alternating proportional rhythm and stretches as far as they are allowed. The trim frame accentuates the exaggerated ceiling height, and because they’re uninterrupted, they bring a modern feel to the traditional detail. Within the mainframe, antique mirror panels are inlaid to form a super-sized mirror surface contributing to both a modern and opulent look. The art deco-inspired chandeliers offer another opportunity to add dazzle and sparkle to the interior composition. These fixtures are further enhanced by adding a 19th-century old styling solution called chandelier socks, to adorn and conceal the fixtures’ chain suspension. This turns the suspension system into a feature, as well as convey a silhouette emphasizing the double story height drop. The sapphire jeweltoned, velvet-covered dining chairs

punctuate the art deco feel by way of adding rich texture that ties the whole look together.

The gallery In the great room, or the gallery, as we like to call it, the space is defined by furniture groupings and anchored by millwork features on both ends of the wall. There is a definite modernity factor to this room. We chose a curtain box to conceal the draperies and supporting hardware and repeated finishes, tones and details from other rooms. For instance, the monolithic fireplace slab cladding references the dining rooms mirror panels’ expansive scale. It’s all about creating a cohesive, connected look from room to room; a designer will help you achieve this.

Streamlined kitchen Here, appliances are integrated into furniture-like cabinets such as the paneled refrigerator and dishwasher

as well as a barista-approved coffee machine; this gives a seamless, streamlined look. The colour palette is kept neutral with soft grey tones paired with classic white, natural wood elements and pops of silver in the hardware and lighting.

Modern details Furniture elements such as the bench and artwork in the hallway complement the modern interior. When it comes to art, a pro tip is to consider white frames. This makes the canvas look brighter, even though it’s formally framed, it blends in effortlessly with the white walls for an even more weightless effect. Whether you’re looking for a modern glamourous look or something else, understanding the design concept through proper planning and research can help ensure the right design elements and principals are incorporated into your renovation design.
