Creating curb appeal
W
hat do visitors observe when they pull up in front of your house? Is it dull and uninspiring? Or, much worse, is there significant wear or damage to your home’s exterior, making it appear a bit run down? It is important to tackle any structural issues first. This includes the front steps, roof, windows, fascia, soffits, siding and foundation. Once these issues have been resolved, it’s time to focus on the decorative elements. There are a number of simple, yet amazing things that can be done to give your home the best curb appeal on the block! A blank patch of grass just isn’t going to get the job done. It is important to introduce some flowers, shrubs and perhaps even trees. The thought of landscaping scares a lot of people. If you are one of them, fear not. Take a few pictures of your yard and arrange to meet someone at a professional garden centre. They will be able to help you pick the right plants and will provide expert advice. Other small purchases that can increase curb appeal include purchasing a new address sign or house number, mail box, light fixtures, door hardware and window boxes. Make your front door the focal point by creating a warm, inviting area. While it may seem strange to be discussing warmer weather projects in the middle of winter, it is important to plan and prepare in advance. Your efforts will most definitely be rewarded. Instead of being dull and run down, your home will be admired for its beauty and character.

To update a small ensuite bathroom SOLUTION:
Working within the space, all details were upgraded to create a high end, glam look.
1 By removing the partial wall needed for the original 48” shower unit, the new shower takes advantage of the space and creates a 60”w x 36”D walk in shower, complete with bench and niche for bottles.
2 The clear glass bi-pass door expands the space visually and keeps the balance of the bathroom dry. Its standard size was also budget friendly.
3 The penny round gold foil tiles add functional drama. 4 The curved mother-of-pearl light fixtures also contribute a decorative element while providing light to the entire room.
5 Accent LED lighting frames the mirror. 6 The furniture-styled vanity features drawers for optimal
storage, a quartz counter-top, and a statement vessel sink.

7 Gold faucets & shower components finish the look. 8 The same tile was used on the floor and the shower wall to expand the space.

Tips to help get your project planning underway
LANNY MCINNES
2020, despite the challenges brought on by the global COVID-19 pandemic, proved to be an exceptionally busy year for residential renovations in Manitoba. The beginning of a new year is often a time to reflect on the past and look at things from a fresh perspective. As you make plans for 2021, you may be looking at giving your homes a “fresh start” with a renovation project or makeover but you aren’t sure how to get started or who to turn to for advice. The MHBA has some tips that will help you get your project planning underway: KNOW WHY YOU WANT TO RENOVATE: What problems
are you trying to solve? What is the purpose of your renovation? For instance – your bathroom may be cramped; you may be working from home far more often now and need a dedicated work space; you need more storage space in the kitchen; or there is no place for the children to do their remote learning under your supervision. Now may be the perfect time to transition a space for a new use. Having a clear idea of the purpose of the project will help you get started. HAVE A PLAN: Have a clear focus on what must be
included in your project, as well as any other features you would like to include if your budget allows. Which renovation items are must haves, and which ones would be nice to have, but are not essential?
you make your decision to hire a professional renovator, get it in writing. Include the scope of work; the exact price including a schedule of payments; a reasonable timetable for completing the work, and any instruction for protecting parts of the house not under construction. It is important to avoid any significant changes during construction because this may cause delays and add extra costs. Avoid renovators who offer to do work without a contract. This type of renovator may not be paying provincial worker’s compensation coverage or carrying adequate insurance, leaving you at financial risk. SET A REALISTIC BUDGET: Decide as early as possible how much money you want to spend. Speak to your lender and discuss the amount you can reasonably afford and the most suitable financing options. Remember—your budget should cover everything that may result from the renovation, such as draperies, blinds, furniture, and appliances. BUILDING PERMITS: Generally, a building permit is required for renovations that involve changes to the structure or systems of your home. Ensure your renovator includes all required permits as part of your agreement. AN ENERGY EFFICIENT
KEEP IT SIMPLE: Whether you want to build on to your

many opportunities to make a home healthier and more energy-efficient. Consider these options during the planning process.
SELECT A RENOMARK RENOVATOR: Look for a
professional RenoMark renovator. The RenoMark symbol tells you that your contractor has agreed to abide by the MHBA’s renovation-specific Code of Conduct. 12

RIGHT ARTWORK HOW TO CHOOSE
THE
FOR YOUR HOME by LISA ROGERS
You may be worried about choosing the right size or the right colours to fit your space, but choosing art for the home is more intuitive than you might think when following a few simple rules. Artwork is very personal, and it is one of the more comprehensive statements you can make in your home, which defines your personality and who you are. It adds character,
14
Home Decor & Renovations | February–March, 2021
visual interest, and it’s also an investment you can take with you should you move. The best part of artwork is that you don’t have to spend exorbitant prices for a piece you love. There are so many artists, prints and pieces available that can fit any budget or style. The challenging part is in deciding where (and how) you hang your artwork. Here are some of my fail-proof suggestions.
TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS
Though you can certainly follow some “rules” when it comes to your home decor, your walls don’t necessarily have to follow the same dogma. Consider viewing your walls as a blank canvas. Your walls can be the place for your more eclectic or emotional choices. Remember, art is a platform for self-expression, for colour, texture and storytelling. Trust
your instincts on what art speaks to you personally, and consider it your artistic expression. ATTEND ART EVENTS AND HEAD TO THE GALLERIES
However big or small, every city has its vibrant art scene, and the best way to learn about art is to study it. Expose yourself to emerging artists, whether at an art event or through a gallery tour. How many times have you heard a story of someone purchasing an unknown piece of art only to find out years later it was made by a nowfamous artist? Paperworks are also a great tip: Much less expensive than oil on canvas, you can still have the sentiment of a great piece of art at half the price.
COMPLEMENT THE ROOM’S SIZE, COLOUR AND AESTHETIC
From the kitchen to the living room, the artwork will be very different for each room. Your bedroom is meant to be a retreat: A place for relaxation and contemplation, so the artwork should reflect that. Whether you place your art directly above your bed or opposite,
typically large scale pieces work well and should hang at eye level. Look for abstract details in soothing colours that help you to relax. When it comes to the living room, for example, this is where you can play with louder prints, designs and tones. Just remember you don’t want the artwork to overwhelm the space, but complement it.
CONSIDER YOUR AVAILABLE WALL SPACE
This is important: You have to determine what kind of real estate you have. If you have a large wall to fill or want one statement piece to anchor your space, look for largescale art. These pieces can make a tremendous impact. If you have a smaller wall, creating a gallery wall is equally as impactful. Pair complementary styles and colours together, assessing what’s currently in your space, so every aspect complements each other. USE LARGE FRAMES
If you don’t have the budget for a large piece of art, try exaggerating the size of your wall by incorporating a few smaller elements – small photographs or prints – by placing them in thin frames with large borders. It emphasizes the artwork and prevents the wall art from looking cluttered (especially in a small setting). STACK ART VERTICALLY
Stacking artwork in a vertical pattern can lengthen the height of a wall visually. Start from top to bottom to create a narrative of how the artwork can harmoniously work together on the wall as a collage.

materials and products offer the best quality and value. They will make recommendations and introduce you to their suppliers. It is important to make sure that products and materials meet Canadian standards by such agencies as Canadian Standards Association and Underwriters Laboratories. These standards set criteria for safety, health and performance and are an important indication of quality. Many renovators are using and promoting products made by wellknown manufacturers, from building materials to windows and faucets. Using brand-name products means that you can be confident that you know what you are getting, including the manufacturer’s warranty. INSTALLATION
Product selection and installation for professional results The products used in your home renovation can have a big impact on the overall quality of the job and on how satisfied you will be with the end result. There are two key considerations — the quality of the products, and how they are installed. SELECTION
The structural components of your renovation (lumber, subflooring, insulation, foundation, plumbing, and so on) are most often suggested by your renovator, who will discuss with 16

you why particular choices are the most suitable for your job. However, it is up to you, the homeowner, to choose the siding, flooring, fixtures and a myriad of other finishing products that go into a home. This only makes sense — after all, you know what you like and how much you are willing to spend. Proper product selection is vital, and professional renovators will help you make the right choices for your project and budget. They know what’s available, and which
However, even the best product cannot perform well, or may fail, if it is not installed properly. An air barrier installed on the wrong side of the wall assembly can lead to moisture problems. Poorly done sub-flooring may “telegraph” through vinyl or linoleum floor covering. And so on… Invariably, the result of improper installation is disappointment. The renovation doesn’t look as good as it should, or things don’t work right and the work may have to be redone, which is both inconvenient and costly. Just as importantly, incorrect installation might invalidate a manufacturer’s warranty. When you hire a renovator, make sure you choose a professional. Then you can have confidence in the work and in the products that go into your renovation, and you will be protected by the manufacturers’ warranty. With a professional renovator, you can look forward to the final result, knowing that everything will work smoothly for years to come. Courtesy of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association

DREAMS Create a cosy bedroom retreat
my tip:
WHEN POSITIONING YOUR BED IN THE ROOM, LEAVE AT LEAST THREE
FT. BETWEEN THE BED AND THE WALLS ON EITHER SIDE, OR LARGE PIECES OF FURNITURE. FOR LOW-PROFILE FURNISHINGS SUCH AS A TABLE OR DRESSER, LEAVE A TWO-FT. BUFFER.
I
by JENNIFER BACKSTEIN s your bedroom’s style a dream, or is it more like a nightmare? Ideally, our bedrooms should be cosy and soothing. In reality, life happens, and between the morning rush and the evening crash, there seems to be little time left to enjoy this space for what it really is – a place to retreat and cocoon. Here are some ways to instantly boost your bedroom’s cosy factor, and enhance your use of this most-versatile room.
Create vignettes You use your bedroom for more than just sleeping, right? Aside from your usual bedroom finds – bed, night tables, a dresser, perhaps an armoire – consider furnishing your master bedroom to live up to all your needs. Create “zones” within the room with vignettes tailored to your preferences. This could be a dressing area, a reading corner or meditation space. Aside from being functional, adding vignettes in designs add visual interest and help showcase the owner’s personality.
Tactile moments You’d be surprised at how important our sense of touch is to our overall experience of a space. Layer comfort into your master bedroom with touchable items – plenty of plush pillows, beautiful bedding and textural blankets, and a soft area rug underfoot. But don’t stop there. Your upholstered headboard, armchair and drapery are perfect areas to add in subtle warmth. Textured wall-coverings are unexpected and always a wonderful surprise, without being all-consuming. Create a bold feature wall in your bedroom using three-dimensional panels, earthy grass cloth or alternately, a bold statement wallpaper can also create the illusion of texture.
Choose “ahhh” colours There’s a good reason the dreamy bedroom palette of white and its various off-white variations has been trending with no end in sight. Not only is a light, neutral palette instantly soothing, but it can also make the room feel cooler, lighter

my tip:
TO CREATE AN EASY READING NOOK, THINK ABOUT COMMON “LIBRARY” ELEMENTS AND BRING
THEM INTO YOUR OWN VIGNETTE. THE BASICS INCLUDE A LIGHT, CHAIR AND TABLE. ENSURE THESE ITEMS ARE SCALED TO THE SPACE. A STOOL CAN DOUBLE AS A SMALL SIDE TABLE. SET IT ALL ATOP A SMALL RUG TO HIGHLIGHT THIS AREA AND DEFINE IT WITHIN THE GREATER SPACE.
my tip:
IF YOU’RE OPTING FOR A BRIGHT BEDROOM, INVEST IN BLACK-OUT BLINDS OR CURTAINS.
REMEMBER THAT SLEEP IS THE NUMBER-ONE FUNCTION AND PRIORITY IN THIS SPACE. DARKNESS WILL HELP ACHIEVE A DEEPER, BETTER-QUALITY SLEEP.
and larger. This is because light colours visually recede, making your walls feel further away. On the other hand, dark colours tend to bring walls inward, making a space feel smaller.
Bring yourself into the design The best way to enhance your sense of comfort in any room, is to bring yourself into it. Perhaps some art, photographs, and some select pieces from your collections, thoughtfully distributed throughout the space to make it feel “yours.” The bedroom is one of the most intimate of spaces in our homes, and our demands on this space are high. As we find ourselves spending more time at home, our bedrooms are serving double- and triple-duty. But don’t forget the main objective – comfort. The Danish have it right with the concept of hygge – warm, welcoming comforts. Dare I say it, with winter around the corner, you’ll be extra grateful for this cosy retreat!
my tip:
SPEAKING OF “THE FEELS,” SINCE SLEEP IS THE ULTIMATE GOAL IN THIS SPACE, HIGH-QUALITY
BEDDING IS A MUST. YOUR SHEETS TOUCH YOUR BODY FOR EIGHT HOURS A NIGHT, GIVE OR TAKE, SO OPT FOR 100-PERCENT COTTON IN A HIGH THREAD COUNT. ALSO, A GOOD QUALITY MATTRESS IS A GOOD PLACE TO SPLURGE IF YOU HAVE SOME EXTRA BUDGET, TO ENSURE REST AND COMFORT EVERY NIGHT. YOUR BEDDING SHOULD ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO THE ROOM’S OVERALL AESTHETIC. LOOK FOR SOOTHING SHADES AND A RESTFUL PALETTE OF MONOCHROMATIC TONES, SUCH AS BLUE, LAVENDER OR GREEN.

NEW YEAR…
NEW LOOK! by LINDA MAZUR
The start of a new year always brings us new trends to excite and inspire. So, what’s new for 2021 that we just can’t live without? Everything from timeless trends to boldly saturated colours, clean lines and geometric shapes, to soft refined curves. And, unfortunately, due to the challenges of 2020, personal workspaces. Deep and richly saturated hues are high on the “love” list this year, and not just for your walls or accessories. We are seeing so many wonderfully exciting colours for cabinetry – deep blues, soft blacks and dark earthy greens – which are rivaling the traditional whites when it comes to our kitchens and bathrooms. This may be a bit of a leap for some, but even introduced in smaller doses, it will have a large impact in your space. However, these colours are not just for cabinetry. These bolder, moody hues are on par for creating rooms that, though darker,
20
Home Decor & Renovations | February–March, 2021
are very relaxing and welcoming, whether found in paint, fabrics, or wallpapers… on your walls, ceilings, furniture or accessories. What I really love about this colour trend is the fact that these are still very classic tones that lend themselves to a timeless look for a space. When designing, I lean towards a more timeless approach, as it offers not only longevity versus short-lived trends, but it also provides a classic canvas that allows you to easily incorporate trends to remain current. Another favourite is blending a bit of a vintage vibe with the more contemporary. Whether mixing more traditional furniture pieces with contemporary accessories, or adding well-curated vintage finds that are juxtaposed in a more modern space, the results can give your home a personality all its own. We are seeing vintage inspirations in everything
from artwork to fabric and wallpaper patterns, lighting and furniture. We’re also seeing more of an artisanal touch when it comes to many of the finishes for our homes. From tile that boasts a hand-crafted look, to beautiful brass finishes for cabinet hardware, faucets and lighting, they all give us the feeling of artistry and history. Texture, in finishes, remains strong. It creates dimension and interest in a space, and we are seeing everything from wood to caning, to highly polished surfaces to beautifully aged marble. And when it comes to wood, light and warm tones rule. Our furniture continues to see soft curves that invite you to curl up and relax. Chairs that swivel are a great accent to a room, but above all, selecting key pieces that have a timeless appeal and are properly proportioned to the room are most important.
Finally, this past year has seen huge changes for all of us. Due to COVID-19, many of us have had to turn our homes into our offices, classrooms and workout spaces, as well as our living spaces. And it’s not always conducive to the integrated, open-concept living that we have desired over the years. We are seeing a need to carve out separate spaces in our homes once again. Home offices – meaning, privacy – has become a huge trend. Obviously, this is not always possible for everyone, but at least creating a small home office space that can be concealed at the end of the workday helps to separate work from home life, as we continue trekking through this pandemic and beyond. Above all, the trends of this year and moving forward are about creating a home environment that is relaxed, warm and multi-functional – with tons of character and personality!

by LYNN FENWICK, B.I.D.
The kitchen is the social hub of a home. It is not only where we prepare and eat meals, it is where we practice our favorite hobby, touch base with family members, do our homework, serious (or not so serious) conversations happen and where we gather with friends. Whether your kitchen is too small or just right, it is 22

important that it enhances who you are, and how you feel in the space. You may not know your style. Sometimes it is just something you see online that grabs you enough to say, “that is so me!” So, how does Fenwick & Company match your personal kitchen style with who you are? We give you
some ideas of the different styles and then we dig in to discover who you are and what you like. The line between different kitchen styles has relaxed in the last few years and many of the styles are intermixed to create the intention of the style, without being too drastic. Let’s discuss a few popular styles.

”
Traditional
BEACH HOUSE/COASTAL
OLD WORLD
Open layout with a light, casual, unpretentious and airy character. It can be colourful, but it is definitely comfortable. This family-friendly style usually has painted cabinets open shelves and a rustic type of flooring.
Old World used to mean raised panel doors, heavy detailed mouldings and dark wood. Think aged European kitchen. Today, it means the kitchen may have some old world charm, but the lines are cleaner and less detailed.
MODERN FARMHOUSE
Farmhouse style is THE hot look these days. It embraces the casual and carefree lifestyle we have been inspired to emulate. It is usually created with white painted cabinets with accented paint colours in either the uppers, lowers or island. This style calls for an architectural ceiling detail, like wood beams. This style is likely to use open shelves and found objects as design features.
TRADITIONAL
I believe Traditional style has merged with Old World to bring in its timeless look but be more appealing to today’s needs in our ever changing world. Cabinets can be painted or stained mixed with glass fronts of the doors. Elements added are in a classic style. The pulls and lighting are chosen to emphasize the classic traditional feel. It may be mixed nexthome.ca 23
with more contemporary elements to add a little more excitement. TRANSITIONAL
Transitional takes the best of traditional and blends it with contemporary sophistication to create a unique style that fits your tastes. It is likely to have shaker style cabinets and larger pulls. MODERN
Modern is the epitome of less is more. The style takes it to as simple as you can design it. It is line, texture, proportion and balance in its purest form. The emphasis is on materials with little or no embellishment. This style is usually flat panel cabinet doors on touch latch instead of visible pulls. CONTEMPORARY
I like to think Contemporary kitchens are the mischievous little sister of Modern kitchens. Contemporary style is less set on the rules of Modern design and more playful. A contemporary kitchen will have a sleek, chic look, with minimalist doors and usually oversized pulls.
Modern
CRAFTSMAN
This style is very popular on the prairies. It is also known as Arts and Crafts or Mission style. The philosophy behind the style is that form and function are to be in equal balance. Natural materials are a must. It is usually a simple shaker cabinet door with rustic hardware. Many of the cabinets are framed (the door is connected to the box by an exposed frame around the door). Lines are simple and functional. Why do you need to know the
different styles? The truth is, you don’t. We can do all of that for you. I do find understanding the different styles will make it easier to explain to your designer what styles you are drawn to. No one says you couldn’t have a modern beach house, or modern traditional style kitchen. Once you know the rules and styles, you know how to break them! Fenwick and Company designers then have the task of working with you to find the perfect mix that will express your personal style.

ROLES OF THE...
RENOVATOR & HOMEOWNER THE ROLE OF THE RENOVATOR:
THE ROLE OF THE HOMEOWNER:
Ŕ Undertakes to co-ordinate their work schedule with you. Ŕ Undertakes to keep you informed on a regular basis when to expect sub-contractors; progress updates; and when you’re needed for decisions. Ŕ Undertakes to make themselves available to answer your questions or to deal with changes. Ŕ Undertakes to honour deadlines set out in the contract, subject to any change orders. Ŕ Undertakes to respect your home and family and ensure all others on the project do the same.
Ŕ The work area should be clear of furniture and personal items – protecting your items and making the work area safer. Ŕ Timely selection of materials (tiles, flooring, etc.) so as not to delay the job. Ŕ Changes should be kept to a minimum once work is underway. Otherwise, the schedule and budget may need revision. Ŕ Discuss questions and issues as they arise. Ŕ Payments should be made in accordance with the schedule set out in the contract.

renovation WHO’S WHO IN
ONCE YOU HAVE DECIDED TO HAVE RENOVATION WORK DONE ON YOUR HOME, YOU WANT TO FIND THE RIGHT PEOPLE TO HELP YOU PLAN AND CARRY OUT THE WORK. WHATEVER THE NATURE AND SCOPE OF YOUR PROJECT, THERE ARE MANY EXPERIENCED PEOPLE WHO CAN HELP TURN YOUR RENOVATION IDEAS INTO A SUCCESSFUL REALITY. 28
Home Decor & Renovations | February–March, 2021
A RENOVATION CONTRACTOR. Or professional renovator, usually gets involved in a wide range of projects — large and small, interior and exterior. Renovation contractors work with you to turn your ideas into reality, and they coordinate all aspects of your project — permits, materials, workers, subtrades, supervision and inspections. In other words, a professional renovator puts it all together for you. A SPECIALTY RENOVATION CONTRACTOR. A professional renovator who specializes in a particular aspect of home renovation, such as kitchens and bathrooms, sunrooms or window replacement. Some contractors focus on renovations for special audiences, such as homeowners with environmental sensitivities.
A DESIGN/BUILD RENOVATOR.
Large renovation projects often require design work and drawings upfront before costs can be worked out and construction can begin. The design/build renovator provides both professional design and construction services and so is able to see your job through from start to finish.
many manufacturers have set up storefront outlets or showrooms where homeowners can enjoy a first-hand look at product offerings such as cabinets, counters and fixtures. Renovation contractors often work closely with these retailers to provide integrated customer service.
A TRADE CONTRACTOR.
DESIGNERS AND ARCHITECTS.
Trade contractors, such as plumbers, electricians, roofers or HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) installers offer highly specialized services. Trade contractors work closely with professional renovators, who include them as part of their team as required for each project. Homeowners can also hire them directly when, for instance, you only want to replace your roofing or install a new furnace.
If your renovator does not provide design services, you can hire a designer or architect to assist you with plans and to prepare working drawings and specifications. Choose someone who is familiar with the special demands of renovations. Ideally, plans should be developed with input from the renovator who will be doing the work.
KITCHEN AND BATHROOM RETAILERS.
Due to the tremendous popularity of kitchen and bathroom renovations,
A HOME ENERGY ADVISOR.
A home energy assessment by a licensed independent home energy advisor can help you save money and improve your home’s comfort
by including energy upgrades in your renovation project. Energy advisors, licensed by the government of Canada, carry out a thorough inspection of all energy-related aspects of your home, and use computer modeling to identify the most cost-effective improvements. You get a written report listing possible improvements and potential energy savings. You and your renovator can use this report when developing your home renovation plans. HOME INSPECTORS.
A third-party inspection of your home before you begin planning your renovation may provide you with important information about its condition and possible needs for repairs and replacement. Before you hire an inspector, be sure to ask about qualifications, references and insurance. Courtesy of the Canadian Home builders’ Association

WHEN A GIRL HAS A DREAM While pursuing my studies, I had a clear vision of what I wanted to accomplish once I graduated. It was simple really. I wanted 2 sinks in my bathroom and a really big closet! Fortunately, my space was perfect since my ensuite was directly off what would become my dream closet.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED I can now enjoy soaking in a bubble filled tub and gaze lovingly at my amazing shoe collection.
GLASS DOORS My farmhouse inspired decor was pre-existing, but I wanted to add some elegance to the space. The fluted glass doors and gold knobs did the trick!

life’s changes
RENOVATING FOR A HOME SHOULD BE CONVENIENT, comfortable and safe for everyone in the household, young and old. “Renovating for living” reflects the fact that as we move through different phases of life, our housing needs change. When planning your home renovation, consider what you will need for both the short and the long term: Ŕ A family with young children typically needs more space and convenience – extra bathrooms, larger family living areas and a more open kitchen with an eat-in area. Ŕ As children mature, they (and their parents) want more privacy. Housing priorities shift towards larger bedrooms, increased closet space and separated living areas. Ŕ Grown children returning home, aging parents moving in, homebased businesses – increasingly, people need to plan for continuous 32

changes in household composition and use of space. Ŕ As homeowners get older, “accessibility” becomes a greater concern – the ability to move easily throughout the home and carry on day-to-day living activities.
In the kitchen, roll-out or pull-down drawers, shelves and pantries make it a snap to keep order and have easy access to everything. Ŕ Providing for the long term in your renovation plans can give you greater value and satisfaction. Experienced renovators offer some practical tips on “renovating for life”, making your
home more flexible and adaptable to your changing needs, while increasing its comfort, convenience and safety at the same time. Ŕ Extra-wide doors, easy-to-use locks and good lighting make it easy and safe to get in and out of the house. A large front porch or overhang will offer shelter outside, while a spacious area inside the entrance provides a convenient spot for setting down parcels and removing outdoor footwear. Ŕ Whenever possible, incorporate the kitchen, living room and a bathroom into the main living area on one level. Widen narrow halls and doorways to make movement easier. An open floorplan can provide a comfortable family environment for work, play and relaxation. Ŕ If space allows, create a separate, multi-purpose room on the main

level. Over the years, it may serve as a den, an office or a spare bedroom. The main floor bathroom should ideally include a shower at least, and a bathtub if possible. Keep floors at one continuous level. Eliminate obstructions such as steps up or down to the family room, or if necessary, use gently sloped ramps. This protects both children and adults from accidents. Non-load bearing movable or removable walls offer the flexibility to change the layout of your home with less work and at a lower cost. Consider the need and opportunities for future expansion of living space into the basement and/or attic, and rough in services (water, electricity, cable) as other renovation work is done. Install laundry facilities on the main or upper floor. If you intend to use an outdoor clothes line, place the laundry room for convenient access to the outside. Choose easy-to-open windows with cranks, and install lever-action

handles rather than knobs on all doors and closets. Position electrical switches, outlets and mechanical system controls where they are easily accessible from a standing or sitting position. Use push-pad light controls, three-way switches to control lights from more than one location, and illuminated controls near entrance doors and in bathrooms. In the bathroom, think safety for the whole family. Reinforce the walls for grab bars in the shower and tub area. Install non-slip flooring and anti-scald faucets. Install a central vacuum system, so you don’t have to carry your machine around. In the kitchen, roll-out or pull-down drawers, shelves and pantries make it a snap to keep order and have easy access to everything. in the family participate in food preparation, including children. Ŕ Outside, gently sloped driveways and walkways can reduce the need for stairs. Garage or parking areas should provide enough space to get around with a baby carriage, armloads of groceries or a wheelchair. Install planters at various and accessible heights. Designer Bilha Kangethe highlights what we can expect in home design for 2021

I predict that lighting and decor trends will continue to be an extension of the mid-century modern style. You will see lots of brushed gold, copper and black finishes. Natural fabrics such as hemp will be popular in bedding and handcrafted ceramic pieces represent simplicity and minimalism perfectly.

hat a year 2020 has been! With all the uncertainty and dramatic shifts that have affected us in various ways, we can all agree that we are ready to put this year behind us and look forward to new possibilities that 2021 has to offer. One thing for sure is how we choose to live and interact within the home will continue to evolve. At the onset of the pandemic and during the lockdown, we were forced to slow down and take stock of what really matters. As a result, enriching the functions within the home is no longer an option but a requirement to operate and thrive. Connectivity, balance, peace and tranquility is not only essential but crucial to how we function in our spaces. Consequently, we see these concepts reflected in decor and design trends. Everything from the colour on our walls and functionality of our furniture, to the materials we surround ourselves with. Trend experts predict that 2021 will be heavily influenced by sustainability, environmental impact, minimalism, layered luxury and organic, holistic design. Here are a few trends I look forward to seeing. I hope they will inspire you to create not only the statement you have been craving in your home but, more importantly, to make your home the ultimate inviting living space.

Modernism upgrade 2.0 Furniture trends for 2021 have taken the simplicity and clean lines of mid-century modern style and paired it with the luxe textures and curvy lines found in art deco style. What does this mean? Furniture that is interesting, modern and practical. Also big for 2021 is incorporating natural textures such as cane, rattan and organic materials. Adding these elements to your space brings sophistication and texture while strengthening our human connection to nature. 1 | HOWARD SOFA by Egg Collective. eggcollective.com 2 | FITZ RUSSET SWIVEL CHAIR FROM CB2. cb2.ca | ANYWHERE GREY DINING TABLE from CB2. cb2.ca

1.
Do your homework Research is the key to getting what you want. Consider your lifestyle and the needs of your family, both in the short and long term. Think about how you’re going to pay for the project and consult with a professional renovator, who can help assess the feasibility and budget. Contact your local municipality to determine what permits are required. Contact your insurance broker to review your homeowners insurance policy – you may need to notify them about your project.
2.
Look for a professional renovator For appropriate service and highquality results, hire a professional renovator. RenoMark™ is a good place to start. You can engage an architect
to assist with drawings and plans, or find a contractor with in-house or recommended designers.
3.
Check references Don’t omit this step just because you are too busy or “they seem like the right person for the job.” Call the renovator’s previous clients to ensure that you are making the right decision.
4.
Get it in writing If you accept the renovator’s offer, it’s time to write up the contract. Even the simplest of jobs should be outlined in writing because the contract is the basis of understanding between you and your renovator. Before signing a contract, read it carefully. Are you satisfied with the description of the work to be done? Does the payment schedule include holdbacks? Are
ADVICE YOU CAN TRUST, SERVICE YOU CAN COUNT ON.
the responsibilities of the renovator clearly spelled out? Remember that if something is not in the contract, then it’s your responsibility.
5.
Establish a good working relationship with your renovator Renovators and homeowners agree that a good working relationship is a vital ingredient in successful renovation projects. Mutual trust is essential. Keep lines of communication open at all times. Expect a brief report on the progress of your job at regular intervals and be available to make decisions when they are needed so work is not held up. Research, good planning, a professional work crew and open communication and trust – a recipe for a home renovation that you will enjoy for years to come. here is little doubt that home renovations is the hottest sector of the residential construction industry. Last year alone Canadians spent close 80 billion dollars on home renovations and here in Manitoba approximately 2.5 billion were spent. There are unlimited publications dedicated to the renovation market and not only television shows, but actual television channels, all focused primarily on home renovation ideas and results. This I see as absolutely fantastic. Some of the projects being done, especially in Manitoba on our surplus of older housing stock, are simply amazing and it makes me very proud to be apart to this industry. So then, how is it that this goliath of an industry still goes for the most part unregulated? 2021 marks my 43rd year in the construction industry and I have witnessed so many positive changes and advances in this business. Yet at the same time, I have never seen it under such attack from individuals and firms exploiting the lack of accountability and regulation, leaving homeowners being taken for substantial amounts of money. At least once a week, I get a call asking if we could come and help someone out who has been misled by less than authentic renovators. So what’s causing this major upswing in fraud? Well, the fact is that anyone can go to the hardware store, buy a hammer, go lease a truck and call themselves a renovator. From there, all you have to do is get a website, pay a nominal amount of money to the plethora of bogus listing agencies on the internet, and they will call you one
Home Decor & Renovations | February–March, 2021
of the ten best in the area. Write a few reviews for yourself and you have spun your web for well-intentioned customers who think they are hiring a legitimate renovator. This last week I even received an email from a service offering to post negative reviews on any competition. The point is that now more than ever, you can say you are anything you want and as the consumer is now relying on the internet for searches and legitimacy, “caveat emptor” (let the buyer beware) will rule the day. There is an answer my friends! In order to maintain and establish trust with consumers, I feel the industry must move towards a renovator’s license which will eliminate the ability for just anyone to enter the industry without prior training, knowledge and accountability. So as I enter and close out my fifth decade in this business, it will be my mission to move our industry in this direction. Stay tuned... this could get interesting! Stay safe and stay well. Have you noticed that arches are having a major moment in design? The first thing that pops into my mind when I think of an arch (or arc) is the rainbow, that perfect burst of colour in unison after a rainfall; it’s a natural wonder that always inspires. Architecture often mimics the natural world, and it’s no different with the arch, as it appeared in design as early as the second millennium BC. And the Romans famously used 200 arches in the construction of the Colosseum. Arches tend to lift the eye upward, symbolizing support, lightness and openness. These days, you can find the classic design element not just in doorways but on everything from cushions to earrings.

SMALL BATHROOM? DON’T FRET! THERE ARE SO MANY WAYS TO DESIGN A SMALL SPACE EFFICIENTLY AND AESTHETICALLY TO TRULY MAKE A SPLASH
W
by DVIRA OVADIA hen it came to the design of this bathroom, I opted for a fresh and fun look without the typical white on white palette. For the floors, I wanted to add pattern and texture. When playing with pattern in a small space, your eye is simultaneously distracted and amused. The ever-so-popular herringbone pattern in a black slate material of four-by-16-in. pieces was the perfect choice for this space, the intensity of the colour grounds the whole bathroom floor while the motif feels intricate and current. By elevating the double vanity off the ground, I was able to appreciate the intricacy of the floor while maintaining a spacious feel in this small space. Although the prefab Kohler vanity is raised off the ground, it still provides ample storage for this shared bath. Opting to go with a white finish for this vanity ties into the crisp, white tones of the sinks, tub and toilet. If space permits, squeezing in two sinks makes the most of a bath, as it provides grandeur and maximizes function for siblings who are sharing a bathroom. Selecting a bathtub in this space provided the dual function of bathing and showering. A small upgrade to a drop-in tub verses a self-skirted acrylic tub goes a long way in this bathroom and allowed us to tile the front of
the bathtub for a truly custom and integrated look. This automatically takes this small bathroom from basic to upgraded. More so, it’s the seamless look of the larger natural stone wall tiles that truly creates a cohesive look around the tub surround and the tub skirt. In small spaces, the use of natural stone is worth the splurge, as the quantity of material needed is smaller, yet you can achieve a high end look by handpicking more luxurious materials. Being savvy about the types of natural stones available on the market is also key to maintaining a conscious budget. The stone selected for the bathtub perimeter is a muted blue-grey natural stone in a 12-by-24in. format, which becomes a soft contrast against the black floors. This affordable stone option allowed us to achieve a lux look for less, while maintaining a fresh and airy look with a soft-hued material. Having fun with metals is optimal in a small spaces, as it customizes the overall look and allows the fixtures to pop. The contemporary brushed brass faucets and tub fixtures were a bold yet fitting choice against the contemporary tile

How we maximized the space of this small bathroom Ŕ ADDING TOWEL HOOKS near the tub Ŕ HANGING ONE LARGE MIRROR over the double vanity instead of two, to open up the space and create a more minimal look Ŕ ADDING A SHOWER NICHE to provide a dedicated space for shampoos and soaps Ŕ 0QUJOH GPS B SKIRTED TOILET to provide a clean and contemporary look that just simply feels more minimal and less cumbersome than the conventional toilet Ŕ )BWJOH GVO XJUI CABINET HARDWARE adds a sense of whimsy and personalizes the space
selections. A matching towel rack hung above the toilet and adjacent to the bathtub provides ample space for towels, and frees up much needed space in the vanity for toiletries. When tackling a small bathroom design, careful consideration must be taken to incorporate a variety of elements, finishes and materials that are going to be aesthetically pleasing yet functional. The emphasis becomes more about focusing on the beautiful composition of components and details that are incorporated used, versus the size of the space.

WARM APPEAL

H
ave you noticed how some spaces seem so welcoming? What is it about them that invites people to linger? And what is it that keeps them coming back? As a designer, my job is to ask these questions, and in my experience, the answer is different for every client. Regardless of what “home” means, there are likely some common denominators: Warm, cosy, comfortable, relaxing… you get the picture. There’s no magic pill to achieving a sense of warmth in the home, but there are strategic ways to contribute to this effortlessly deliberate, totally unmistakable look and feel. Here’s how to turn up the heat, to help any space feel more inviting.
Physical warmth This is the type of heat you can feel, experienced through physical touch. It’s what entices you to run your hand across the velvet sofa cushions and drape yourself in plush blankets with the rug beneath your bare feet. Window treatments, rugs, pillows, throws and your furniture upholstery go a long way toward achieving that overall sense of warmth and comfort. Textiles are often left as an afterthought when designing a room, but I prefer to incorporate them in the greater design plan, as they are an impactful element not to be forgotten. Curtains, rugs, pillows and blankets, and the upholstery you choose for seats, chairs and your sofa all play an important role in the ambience. Layer different textures to add depth to the design. If warmth is important to you, textiles could be something that’s worth splurging on. For obvious reasons, the fireplace is a natural focal point in any room,

whether appealing to an audience with its crackling flames or as a display space for art and accessories. Allow your fireplace to be the centre of attention, and if you don’t have one, get one. Depending on your budget and the desired look and feel, you have many options available to you: Wood-burning, gas, electric and Dimplex even offers a water vapor fireplace that is safe, versatile, vent-free and more affordable than its wood or gas counterparts.
Perceived warmth This is the type of warmth that you experience visually. When you enter a room, you immediately get a sense of its “temperature” based on what you can see. Is it soft and organic? Crisp and contemporary? Maybe it’s antique and storied. When choosing your home’s overall aesthetic, be mindful of how different styles impact your emotions. Regardless of the style you choose, visual warmth can be achieved by layering different patterns, textures,
materials and finishes. Remember – variety brings interest and keeps the eye engaged. Also consider “lighting temperature.” Light bulbs come in a variety of tints that can set the tone for the space, ranging from cool bluish-white to warm-yellow that mimics candlelight, and neutral daylight options. Consider what you’ll be doing in the room, and what type of lighting will best accommodate those actions. After all, function must come first. Will you be dining and relaxing? Reading and doing paperwork? Watching movies? Warm light is commonly used in residential applications like living areas, bedrooms, kitchens and dining rooms. On the other hand, cool light is ideal for workspaces such as an office, hobby or laundry room. Ensure a consistent light temperature in the room, and put your lights on dimmers to keep it versatile.
Emotional warmth This is the warmth that is felt within; the kind that tugs at your heartstrings. A thoughtful medley of art, accessories and the small details can collectively tell the story of your past, your travels and your passions. In short, this is the personality of your home. Warm up the mood of your space by putting yourself on display. Here’s your chance to unpack those mementos from the past and integrate them into your present. Collections, books, photographs and art all help tell your story and turn an empty room into a reflection of its inhabitant. “Home” means something different to everyone, and while these tips are a good general guideline, they will be interpreted and realized differently by everyone. there’s no right or wrong way to turn a house into a home. If it feels right to you, that’s the most important thing.

Every year, the design world and decoristas everywhere await the announcement from Pantone declaring the colour of the year. Pantone’s astute colour selection influences product development and design decisions from fashion to home furnishings. For 2021, Pantone has chosen not one but two colours to encapsulate the new year: The calming shade of Ultimate Gray 17-5104 and the vibrant yellow colour Illuminating 13-064. These two colours could not be more opposite, and that is precisely the point. “The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with vibrant yellow illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “Practical and rocksolid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a colour combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.” Whether you plan to incorporate both colours or just one, here are some simple ways to infuse the hues into your lifestyle.

F
or the first time in years, welcome to the inside of the “Miami home of TV’s The Golden Girls. Although the lush subtropical landscaping surrounding the home was in keeping with the Miami environment, where the golden girls supposedly lived, the house itself was actually located in Los Angeles. While we were convinced that the comedic adventures of Blanche, Dorothy, Rose and Sophia took place inside the home we knew so well from the outside, in fact it was a set and not the original house. Now we have the opportunity to see that the actual house is far larger in volume and is a mix of mid-century modern, Japanese and Hawaiian architecture cleverly designed to reap the most from the mild California climate.

Now for sale by the estate of the original owner, The Golden Girls TV home is priced at $2.9 million. Still going strong on cable television 28 years after the final episode, the sitcom that ran from 1985 through 1992 and won more awards than almost any TV comedy on record, revolves around three slightlyover-middle-aged women who find themselves single again, plus the elderly mother of one, who struggle to be viable in a youth-oriented world. The four strong characters include Dorothy, the sensible one; Rose, the innocent airhead; Blanche, the consummate man-crazy flirt; and Sophia, the spry, sometimes too active mother of Dorothy. Their interactions between each other and the script’s formula was a hands-down winner. The actresses: Bea Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty each received at least one Emmy Award for their work on the show. Little did we know that the real interior of The Golden Girls house had a completely different interior than that of the set. Instead, the 2,901-square-foot, four-bedroom, four-bath Brentwood home has huge open rooms and tall vaulted ceilings enjoying the feeling of wide-open space, unlike the small-cozy rooms we came to know through the sitcom. The home was built in 1955 by the Hawaiian architectural firm of Johnson and Perkins. The original design features include floor-to-ceiling glass, oak floors, sliding Japanese shoji screens eliminating the need

for drapes, and a wonderful green-andturquoise kitchen cheerfully displaying the epitome of a cool 1970’s look. The Hawaiian element brings the outdoors in with vanishing threshold and large covered patio with skylights to protect from the occasional raindrop. This home is guaranteed to give the new owner many years of party-conversation topics. The listing agent for this property is Rachelle Rosten of Douglas Elliman, Beverly Hills.
